I have noticed a few negative comments on the way the competition is going, and I will say I have been surprised with some of the votes, but this is a hunt for the best TV show as voted for by the readers of SpoilerTV and other related sites, and so what they say is what is the case. I'm enjoying the shock, despite many times jumping on my bed aghast at some of the results. It's all fun at the end of the day :)
For all those who have entered the competition, once the results are updated, you can check out how you are doing here: Updated Brackets
Today we have the big Gahooter, the one everyone's been waiting to see how it does. That is LOST battling against the hugely popular The West Wing and also king of comedy Seinfeld taking on the crazy Twin Peaks. I'm expecting the number of votes to reach new highs today! Also, in a great day of polls, we have The OC vs Life on Mars (UK) & Doctor Who vs. ER which you can view here: Best Show Ever 1.3c
The West Wing vs. LOST
The West Wing
Seasons: 7 (Finished)
Format: Political Drama
Synopsis: The series is set in the West Wing of the White House—where the Oval Office and offices of presidential senior staff are located—during the fictional Democratic administration of Josiah Bartlet (played by Martin Sheen).
Fan Review: (Somehow I lost some of the names of the people who sent reviews, so if this is yours, let me know!)
Garnering 27 Emmys over the course of its seven season run, the West Wing stands as one of the most critically acclaimed shows ever made, and it’s not hard to see why. Forgoing the angst, vast conspiracies, and flashy action sequences generally found on TV, the West Wing was one of those rare shows that believed being smart and engaging was enough to make a series not just passably entertaining but exceptionally so. Focusing on the everyday lives of the White House staff serving under newly elected president Josiah Bartlet, writer Aaron Sorkin brought a wit and intelligence to the screen that in many ways has yet to be matched, somehow made even better by the show’s all-star ensemble cast featuring the likes of Bradely Whitford, Allison Janney, Richard Schiff, and an unforgettable Martin Sheen, among others. Inspiring, captivating, and even educational, the West Wing was drama at its best, making even the most mundane aspects of the American political tradition both fun to watch and something to be proud of. The standard by which any good series should be measured, the West Wing is a no-brainer for one of the greatest, if not itself the best, shows ever to air on television.
LOST

Seasons: 6 (Finished)
Format: Adventure/Drama/Mystery/Fantasy/Scince Fiction
Synopsis: The series follows the lives of various groups and people, most importantly the survivors of the crash of a commercial passenger jet flying between Sydney and Los Angeles, on a mysterious tropical island somewhere in the South Pacific. Episodes of the early seasons typically feature a primary storyline on the island, as well as a secondary storyline from another point in a character's life.
Fan Review: HP108
LOST is a show that revolutionized network television and the internet. The series explored themes and storylines that most shows were afraid to explore and created a buffet of mysteries that kept that show interesting for six seasons. LOST is a show that will be remembered for its clever twists and complex characters, with both great heroes and villains, for having a roller coaster run and for proving that not all the best shows are on cable television. LOST is an amazing show with perhaps the most controversial series finale ever.
Twin Peaks vs. Seinfeld
Twin Peaks

Seasons: 2 (Finished)
Format: Mystery/Psychological thriller/Supernatural/Suspense
Synopsis: The series follows the investigation, headed by FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan), of the brutal murder of a popular teenager and homecoming queen, Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee).
Fan Review: None Submitted
Seinfeld

Seasons: 9 (Finished)
Format: Sitcom
Synopsis: Set predominantly in an apartment block on Manhattan's Upper West Side (but shot mainly in Los Angeles), the show features a host of Jerry's friends and acquaintances, including George Costanza, Elaine Benes and Cosmo Kramer.

ReplyDeleteLOST is a show that revolutionized network television and the internet. Thanks mate. Used it :) :)
ReplyDeleteVoted Lost and Twin Peeks. 2 of my fav shows ever
ReplyDeleteHow could you NOTE vote for LOST? I mean, seriously?
ReplyDeleteNot*
ReplyDeleteFavorite has nothing to do with it. The West Wing was just better. What other show could give you the warm fuzzy feelings while talking seriously about campaign finance reform? While LOST's execution was admittedly superb, mysterious circumstances, massive myth-arcs, and lingering plot threads are relatively common; shows that somehow manage to both be spectacular while maintaining real world relevance are not. And while the West Wing might not have been an edge-of-your-seat thrill ride, it was an unparalleled tribute to civic duty, political action, and the democratic process as a whole, themes perhaps less exciting but far more praiseworthy.
ReplyDeleteBut don't worry. The West Wing isn't going to put up the fight it deserves to. It's too old and long forgotten.
ReplyDeleteThe West Wing 44% (303 votes)
ReplyDeleteLOST 56% (381 votes)
Total Votes: 684
Not bad for an "old and long forgotten" show.
The West Wing 44% (303 votes)
ReplyDeleteLOST 56% (381 votes)
Total Votes: 684
Not bad for an "old and long forgotten" show!
second that.
ReplyDeletemine too:)
How in the world can The West Wing be ahead of Lost right now?
ReplyDeleteLost is loosing people!!!
ReplyDeleteIs everybody sleeping or what!
Time to take the big guns!
How is it possible that my two favourite shows of all time meet this early in the contest!?!?!?!?!
ReplyDeleteAs much as I absolutely adore Lost and would vote for it over literally anything else, The West Wing has been with me for over a decade, has got me through some tough times, made me laugh, made me cry, made me think about issues I wouldn't normally think about and gave us one of the best Presidents America never had. My vote goes to TWW.
Lost loosing in the first round. Ok, I'm officially shocked.
ReplyDeleteThis competition just lost all its credibility:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.imdb.com/title/tt0411008/board/nest/165653236
If LOST loses in the first round, I am going to destroy my computer
ReplyDeleteYou were right two days ago when you said "By looking at the polls, I am already a loser. I had Buffy against LOST for the final battle. Now I am worried about LOST. "
ReplyDeleteAnd DarkUFO was overconfident by replying "I would not worry too much about Lost ;) "
Your desesperate call is not much of a success anyway. No answer to it for now on imdb forum.
ReplyDeleteBetter try the fan boards.
Let's hope LOST gets more votes in the next hours
ReplyDeleteLooks like another shock is on the cards to be honest
ReplyDeleteI bet that the LOST fans that were disappointed with the finale are now voting against the show. You traitors (j\k)
ReplyDeletethere definetely seems to be some negative LOST voting, haha. I don't think many people will have seen this happening. But I guess The West Wing is very popular anyhow. Had it not been against LOST I would have expected it to challenge more. I'm in the process of watching The West Wing and I'm loving it but it's no LOST :P
ReplyDeleteNever loose hope! A miracle is on the way.
ReplyDeleteWhat are these big guns, and when are they showing up? :P
ReplyDeleteDARK knows his beans. I still have faith. Just :P
ReplyDeleteI certainly wouldn't allow that.
ReplyDeleteA miracle is on the way.
Bitter LOST fans + The West Wing fans= LOST in trouble
ReplyDeleteI've been keeping a watch on my polldaddy account, and it appears that LOST fans are starting to wake up :P
ReplyDeleteIts risen 2% in the last 30-40 mins. This could be the resurgance!
All credit to The West Wing, it is quality TV, and so i'm liking how much of a fight it is putting up. Makes it all the more interesting.
I wonder how many people that voted for The West Wing has never actually seen the show and only voted for it, because they hated LOST finale?
ReplyDeleteexactly.
ReplyDeletepathetic.
Told you a miracle was on the way.
ReplyDeleteLet's see if we can set a new record (Legend of the Seeker vs. Fringe (Day 2, Round 1 - 3283 votes))
And I wonder how many people voted for The West Wing because they think it's a better show (however marginally)...
ReplyDeletein a site where (i guess) a really big chunk of the visitors came from darkufo? not much.
ReplyDeleteLOST over the West Wing any day. I really hate Seinfeld so I voted for Twin Peaks even though I've only watched the first 3 episodes. lol
ReplyDeleteAre you now going to do the same thing for "The West Wing" now that it's losing to "Lost"?
ReplyDeleteNo one is saying that LOST is better thanThe West Wing, what some of us are saying is that some LOST fans are voting against the show because they still can't accept the finale
ReplyDeleteYeah, I get that and it's probably happening to some extent, but I don't think it's fair to say that the vast majority of TWW's votes come from disgruntled Lost fans who have never even seen TWW. As I've commented above, I am a major fan of both shows but went for TWW in the end because (I think) it is a better show.
ReplyDeleteLooking at the latest scores, this seems a pretty academic discussion at this point, anyway...
Seinfeld=show about nothing.
ReplyDeleteLost=show about everything!
The West Wing and Seinfeld are the best drama and sitcom ever made, respectively. I have no doubt that Lost will beat The West Wing because it's more recent and more trendy, but having seen every episode of both show, it's laughable that anyone would suspect Lost and The West Wing are in the same league. West Wing is miles ahead.
ReplyDeleteThat Seinfeld/Twin Peaks is so close is bizarre though. It's Seinfeld, for crying out loud!
Gee, with an audience like that, I wonder how many people are voting for Lost who've never even seen The West Wing......
ReplyDeleteIt's really hard to say with both of these polls. Twin Peaks and Seinfeld were both revolutionary in their own fields. I'll probably give it to Seinfeld for nine years without losing its touch, compared to a short series of Twin Peaks that ran itself into the ground with some nonsensical plot developments.
ReplyDeleteAs for The West Wing and Lost, that's a really hard decision. Lost was probably the most creative series on tv in a long time, and it's best moments are better than TWW's best moments. But it was also far more uneven compared to The West Wing, with a lot of filler episodes and characters/storylines that went nowhere. On the other hand, even TWW's weakest seasons (5 & 7) managed to keep their stories straight, be consistent, and wrapped up all the arcs without filler arcs. It was also much funnier. TWW had better writing and acting, while Lost had better storytelling, directing, and editing.
I think the vote comes down to what you value most: ambition or execution. Lost was far more ambitious than TWW but didn't always deliver on it's potential, and TWW wasn't as ambitious but managed near perfect execution. With that said, I'm not voting on this poll.
Why does it say for LOST, "Episodes of the early seasons typically feature a primary storyline on the island, as well as a secondary storyline from another point in a character's life." There is not one season where it's not typical. Yes even the last season is another point in the character's life. So it should just read "Episodes typically feature a primary storyline on the island, as well as a secondary storyline from another point in a character's life.
ReplyDeleteI loved the first season of the West Wing but it got more then I could take and I stopped watching in the 3rd season. Imo it's clearly not the best Drama ever since Mad Men and Breaking bad eat it for Lunch. I adore LOST, Buffy, and Angel more then any other show in history but I can see how myth shows aren't everybody's cup of tea. I still voted for LOST :)
I think it is very unfair to put any show against LOST on this site. A lot of the people that follow this site do so because of Dark's LOST site. So this pretty much makes this whole thing pointless because you know it will win. West Wing is my favorite show and I feel it has no chance against LOST, although no show would.
ReplyDeleteDark's site and SpoilerTV are two separate things. You have to accept if your favorite show loses. I like LOST, but I also wanted Buffy to win, which lost in the first round.
ReplyDeleteThis contest is open to everyone, not only the DarkUFO's members.
ReplyDeleteFirefly vs. 24 was mentionned at Whedonesque and Firefly won with more than 1500 votes.
With an ip-checking poll (one computer, one vote), every dedicated fan-base has a chance, even against LOST
woo lets go LOST
ReplyDeleteseinfeld against twinpeaks thats hard
ReplyDeleteits like if i like ice cream more than pizza..
LOST LOST LOST LOST all the way !!!! You guys got any milk ?
ReplyDeleteThis is a rather elaborate way or declaring Lost the "Best Show Ever." Not that it means much since a huge chunk of the people who come to this site are here because of Lost. Even if fans for other shows are pulled from other forums, it's still more of a competition for which show has the most obsessive, fervent, poll obsessed, online fan base, which is still Lost. Nothing wrong with that, it just has no bearing on the quality of a show. Lost is enjoyable enough to watch, I can see why some adore it, but best show ever? Um, no.
ReplyDeletePretty much agree with you on everything, except one thing.
ReplyDeleteThe Force may be strong among LOST-fans but there is still other strong online fan base.
See how well Legend of the Seeker (yes i know it's a bad example since they loose) or Firefly did on the previous polls.
Chuck (we will know tomorrow ) or Terminator : The Sarah Connor Chronicles did extremely well on other internet polls.
The tournament is not over and i think we may have somes shockers till the end.
Adam, you should seriously think about renaming this contest to "The Most Popular TV Show". It seems that a lot of people are voting on polls even if they haven't seen both shows. Also, a lot of the voters haven't seen cable shows (which contains most of the best entertainment on television) such as Breaking Bad or The Sopranos.
ReplyDeleteHey mate. It's too late to do anything about the name. It still is a hunt for the Best TV show as voted by the visitors to the site. I have a few ideas for next year, if Dark decides to run the competition again, and if there's demand for it.
ReplyDeleteI think it's still a fair title for the competition anyhow, but I see from both sides why some fans are disappointed, yet at the end of the day, it comes down to how many people vote for what.
Plus, True Blood and House, two hugely popular shows both have lost in the first round so I don't feel it's just a popularity contest also.
bring back THE WEST WING.
