Onto today's battles and here we see two Goldie-Oldies in Babylon 5 and The Twilight Zone doing battle, as well as the never ending Simpsons taking on the very new Vampire Diaries. Can old beat new here? I don't know. The Simpsons may have waned a bit in recent years, and that bitter taste could hand Vampire Diaries the win. All shall be revealed. Also today we have another two battles, with True Blood fighting Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip & the surprise entry of the round Flashforward, taking on the still everywhere despite finished 6 years ago, Friends. You can find those two poll here: Best Show Ever 1.2d

Babylon 5 vs. The Twilight Zone
Babylon 5

Seasons: 5 (Finished)
Format: Science Fiction
Synopsis: The show centers on the Babylon 5 space station: a focal point for politics, diplomacy, and conflict during the years 2257–2262. With its prominent use of planned story arcs, the series was often described as a "novel for television".
Fan Review: Clydefamous
You know how there's been so much talk about what the writers of Lost knew and when, and were they making the show up as they went along? Well the writers on Babylon 5 knew from the start what was going to happen, chapter and verse, character by character and that's why Babylon 5 was a beautiful interstellar novel where each season we got a new chapter in its epic story. We're insanely lucky we got to see such great TV.

The Twilight Zone

Seasons: 5 (Finished)
Format: Science fiction / Fantasy / Horror / Suspense / Drama / Speculative fiction
Synopsis: The series consisted of unrelated episodes depicting paranormal, futuristic, dystopian, or simply disturbing events; each show typically featured a surprising plot twist and was usually brought to closure with some sort of message. The series was also notable for featuring both established stars (e.g. Cliff Robertson) and younger actors who later became famous (e.g. Robert Redford).

what a disgrace TVD seems to be beating The Simpsons....

  3. Picked Babylon 5 and the Simpsons. Babylon 5 is so awesome, I think it's the reason why I was never that impressed with the new BSG which is a great show but for me Babylon 5 is even better. I like TVD but dude, it's the Simpsons, I have grown with this show and I still watch it ocassionaly. It's a classic. Although my favorite Matt Groenig show is Futurama which has the better storylines.

I know! Has the world gone bonkers?

  5. OK I know it's early (or late since I'm on the East Coast of the US) but how can The Simpsons not win over TVD? I'm sure once I go to sleep & check back later this will change, right RIGHT =)

  6. yeah...
I mean, I know that people cannot like the same things, and that's not my problem.
but seriously, one of the cornerstones of national television (which is not at it's best now, but that doesn't matter) against a show which is coincidentally (and terribly conveniently...) started at the peek of this whole vampiremania?
if I say that ignorant teenagers are ruining these kinds of polls, because they don't have the knowledge to properly recognize the value of something, am I too far off? don't think so...

  7. I didn't want to say it, but since you did yup I agree with you. I also voted for The Twilight Zone, this should be interesting.

The Vampire Diaries beating The Simpsons--this is a joke right? That's like Interpol beating The Beatles.

    ReplyDelete
  9. How come that TVD is beating the simpson? Are you out of your mind?

20 years against one single season???

    ReplyDelete
  10. I agree completely and am confused by the current state of the polls :(.

  11. People are out of their minds. First the Sopranos and Breaking Bad. Now the Simpsons? Give me a break.

  12. Voted for Babylon 5 and The Vampire Diaries because it is a very good show. I didn't vote The Simpsons because I stopped watching cartoons many years ago

  13. Frankly, a show that has had only one season shouldn't be eligible. If Heroes had been on such a ballot right after its first season, it would have done extremely well. Now it might not win a poll against My Mother the Car.

  14. I'm pretty sure this is called "BEST show ever"....not "your FAVORITE show ever"....or even "Shows you are currently watching". It shouldn't matter if you've stopped watching cartoons and moved on to poorly written teenage romance, The Simpsons losing to the Vampire Diaries basically makes this entire thing a joke. Even if a person has hated The Simpsons for its entire 20 year run I would hope that they could recognize that the show has earned its place among the best of television history. Vampire Diaries is a flavor of the week and shouldn't even have made it into the tournament.

  15. Well that's your opinion. How can I vote for a show that I stopped watching? How do I know if it's the best show ever? I agree with you about these polls can be sometimes unfair because Buffy lost, but like I said, everyone has their opinion and that's why shows like The Mentalist are going to the next round.

  16. There are some cases where I would agree with you that if you stopped watching, or never watched a show then you can't make a proper decision. However, in this specific case, my point is that the shear magnitude that is the 20 years of The Simpsons(whether you've ever watched it or not) outweighs the one unbelievably mediocre season of The Vampire Diaries. A show that has only had one season has no business even being considered as 'best show'....not only do viewers not know what the show could become, I'm guessing neither do the writers.

  17. I guess it's because it's newer. In those polls it seems that almost everytime the newer show wins. And that is a shame ! Like if people don't have any memory...

    ReplyDelete
  18. I think this contest is not about the "best show" anymore, it's about the most popular

    ReplyDelete
  19. Yes, Dark, you should rename this contest.

yup...it's about which show can rally more fan-kids to vote for it. which is why i was so surprised that Buffy lost as Whedon-ites are an intense bunch.

That being said--the poll is about Best Show, but people with little regard for history or cultural relevance have turned it into a popularity contest. Ten years from now, The Simpsons will still be immortal, and only a handful of people will even know what The Vampire Diaries is...heck, I hadn't even heard of it until this poll.

  21. I know people disagree, but if people watch it and they didn't watch the others then it could be their best show. I have disagreed with many, 24, The Sopranos, Friends especially today. However, at this time, people think that whatever is the best show then so be it. Still makes for a bit of fun, and people aren't going to hate any show any more if it loses. We still have Dexter, and The Wire.
People have different views on 'Best' I think. But I'm still enjoying it despite the fact many of my favourites are failing.

"OMGz loL I heARt superman and vampires!"

You just quoted the two finalists of the tournament !

  23. wedestroymyths24 June 2010 at 19:14

Nope--different "views" of "best" don't cut it. I know there is a measure of subjectivity to this endeavor, but, in general, I find it alarming that audiences judge everything so viscerally. For example--I don't like Friends, never have and never will. BUT, it was way more influential and better crafted than 90% of Flash Forward. Friends made impact on pop culture, Flash Forward will, maybe, if it's lucky, be a footnote in a television history book some day. I just wish people tried to be a little more objective since this poll is "BEST" television show ever, and not "OMGz loL I heARt superman and vampires!"

  24. Babylon 5 was a completely new approach to TV. They had the entire arc planned before it started. Of course there were some mini arcs in the series that had to be tweaked for one reason or another. It was a wonderful story. Mira Furlon was in it as well!

  25. Two days running I can't access my dawgsled account to check my picks. I am not voting unless I know what I picked. Could someone please fix dawgsled?!

  26. Well apparently I was wrong, it's now 5PM on the East Coast & TVD is killing The Simpsons. Unbelievable! I wonder how much Ian Somerhalder has to do with this, I liked him as Boone in Lost and all but isn't he one of those teen heartthrob screaming teen kind of guys?

    ReplyDelete
  27. yeah...
I mean, I know that people cannot like the same things, and I don't have a problem with that.

    edit:
and before every VD fan comes out to bash me:
it's okay if you prefer that. there are guys out there, who just cannot stand animated stuff, or just doesn't like the humor of The Simpsons, or simply haven't see it (though that's not too probable :)).
there is nothing wrong with that.
but when the show which is aimed at the actual mainstream genre gets twice as much votes as the other one, the answer is surely something else...
