Update: 11:30 Brackets have been updated. How are you doing?

View Brackets

Day 3: So congratulations to Firefly, Fringe, The Wire & The Mentalist for making it through to the next round. So harsh on both Legend of the Seeker and 24, which had huge amounts of votes and both would have smashed any other showdown we have already had results for, yet they came up against too tough shows in Firefly & Fringe. Watch out for these two shows in the upcoming Rounds. Also surprising was the lack of support for The Wire, which despite an east victory, only managed 376 votes, compare this with 24's 1499 votes, and you can see it's going to potentially find it tough in later rounds.
For all those who have entered the competition, once the results are updated, you can check out how you are doing here: Updated Brackets

And so today's round here sees two very current, and very popular shows going head to head in Dexter vs. Bones, as well as a showdown for Charmed against The Gilmore Girls. Also today in the other post, we have The Sopranos vs. Smallville and Breaking Bad vs. Stargate SG1. If you would like to vote in either head here: Best Show Ever Round 1.2b

Dexter vs. Bones
Dexter

Seasons: 4 (ongoing)
Format: Crime Drama/Suspense/Mystery/Dark Comedy
Synopsis: Set in Miami, the series centers on Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall), a serial killer with standards who works for the Miami Metro Police Department as a blood-spatter analyst.
The show is based on characters created by Jeff Lindsay for Darkly Dreaming Dexter the first of his series of Dexter novels. It was adapted for television by Emmy Award-winning screenwriter James Manos, Jr., who wrote the pilot episode.

Bones

Seasons: 5 (ongoing)
Format: Police Procedural/Drama
Synopsis: The show is based on forensic anthropology, with each episode focusing on an FBI case file concerning the mystery behind human remains brought by FBI Special Agent Seeley Booth to the forensic anthropologist Dr. Temperance "Bones" Brennan. Emily Deschanel stars in the title role, along with David Boreanaz as Special Agent Seeley Booth.
Fan Review: Alyssa
This show brings new light to forensic anthropology and character development. In one hour not only do you learn a thing or two about the human body, but you also get the experience to grow with all the unique and hilarious characters. Though the "partners falling in love" spiel might be overrated, Bones knows how to use the relationship to their advantage, and provides the fans with an awkward, comedic, mysterious, and romantic show that leaves you stunned and wanting more.

Charmed vs. Gilmore Girls
Charmed

Seasons: 8 (Finished)
Format: Dramedy/Fantasy/Action/Horror
Synopsis: The series narrative follows the four Halliwell sisters — Prue, Piper, Phoebe and, later, Paige. They are the culmination of the most powerful line of good witches in history. The sisters, despite being perceived as normal women by the non-supernatural community, are known as The Charmed Ones in the magical community, whose prophesied destiny is to protect innocent lives against evil beings, such as demons and warlocks. Each sister possesses unique magical powers that grow and evolve, while they attempt to hold normal working lives in San Francisco. Keeping their paranormal identities separate and secret from their ordinary lives forms part of the series' tension and challenges, with the exposure of magic having far-reaching consequences on relationships, and having resulted in a number of police and FBI investigations throughout the series.
Fan Review: None Submitted

Gilmore Girls

Seasons: 7 (Finished)
Format: Comedy-Drama
Synopsis: The show follows single mother Lorelai Victoria Gilmore (Graham) and her daughter Lorelai "Rory" Leigh Gilmore (Bledel) in the fictional town of Stars Hollow, Connecticut, a close-knit New England town (based on Washington Depot, Connecticut) with many quirky characters, located roughly thirty minutes from Hartford, Connecticut. The series explores family, friendship, generational divides, and social class. Gilmore Girls features frequent popular culture and political references and social commentary that manifest most clearly in Lorelai's difficult relationship with her wealthy upper-class parents.
Fan Review: Water Bug
Anyone who understands the appeal of small town life will be able to relate to Gilmore Girls. Set in fictional Stars Hollow Connecticut, the show's action and characters often mimic what is best about the little burg: charm and quirkiness. The main characters epitomize the notions of confidence and embracing one's self, and the secondary characters are the very definition of eccentricity. As to the story, any number of unlikely and amusing events influence the characters to deal with issues of familial relationships and being part of a community. The show is relatable, as well. Most people can understand the need to find a place to belong that was ultimately the driving force leading to the situation that the characters are in at the beginning of the show. Throughout the course of its seven seasons, Gilmore Girls dealt with similarily identifiable incidents of disapproving parents, growing up, developing one's identity, tricky relationships, and risky life ventures. Of course, the show never seemed to take itself too seriously and almost always had an unconventional side-story or two. And that's all without mentioning the shows quick-witted, fast-talking, pop culture reference riddled discourse!

Thanks once again for voting and taking part in the Competition. Hope your doing well, and that your favourite shows are getting through. Comment away and lets see who grinds through today.

Dexter is the best show on TV now that LOST is over. Losing to Bones would be a travesty.

  3. Bones is a decent show but come on! Dexter is on a whole other level imo

Dexter is a pretty good series, coming off its best season, and with Six Feet Under-alum Michael C. Hall who is overdue for an Emmy along with Hugh Laurie and Steve Carell. Bones is a pretty average procedural with a unique but irrelevant twist. It's appeal is supposed to come from the charm of the two leads rather than the plot, but even that is pretty generic.

Charmed is an okay series. You don't see stories like this on live action tv very often anymore, but it was mostly episodic, varied in quality, and had pretty soapy overarching stories to compliment it's mythology. Gilmore Girls lost a lot of quality in its last few years, but the first four seasons were among the better comedy series being aired at the time, with overlength, dialogue heavy scripts that were only matched by The West Wing.

    Final Votes:

    Dexter - 8*
    Bones - 5

    Charmed - 6
    Gilmore Girls - 7*

  5. Dexter is such a great show, it would be a shame if Bones wins against it.

David Boreanaz and Emily Deschanel are great lead actor and actress but Dexter has is not an usual copshow like Bones, the directing is marvellous & Jennifer Carpenter, Julie Benz and Michael C. Hall are terrific. Ok, seasons 3 and 4 are nothing like the first 2 seasons (which are close to perfection). Season 3 sucked a little, even if a bad 'Dexter' is better than most shows. And the final 4 episodes of season 4 are trully compelling but what comes before is disappointing, and in this season especially, Batista/Laguerta have been complete drags.

I haven't watched Gilmore girls, I don't plan to but I bet it can only be better than Charmed.

  6. whoever votes for bones needs to be admitted. i mean come on? who the hell watches that stupid wanabee NCIS show? ergh! Dexter all the way.

ps. no one fucking watched charmed or gilmore girls

  7. you are totally allowed to vote for dexter if you think it should win, but no need to bring down the other shows, especially when it's good ones like bones . And you're allowed to say what you want, but man, that was rude !
and you know what, I watch bones and I'm not the only one ...

  10. Had to go with Charmed , I can still watch Charmed over and over ,

  11. Voted for Dexter, I love this show so much, season 3 was very boring but season 4 was fantastic, and Gilmore Girls which just brilliant.

  12. I agree. Go Bones!

  13. Charmed is far better than Gilmore, i found Gilmore to be very boring and had no spark to it. Every episode had very boring scenes which made me turn off and i am surprised it lasted so long. Whereas Charmed had amazing episodes which all had their own little spark, whether it be with comedic moments, sad moments or just pure Magic. It never dissapointed and i was sad it only had 8 seasons but what great seasons they where.!!!!!!!!

  14. Obviously people had watched both, as they lasted for many seasons, how much good TV you have missed on! And bones is also good TV, Dexter is just over rated!

    ReplyDelete
  15. Dexter is over rated? HUH?! Try UNDER rated and also in a completely different league than Bones. This should definitely not be close.

  16. OK, now come on. How can Dexter not be winning against Bones? JosephMcLaddle is right, I agree completely, it would be a travesty for Dexter to lose, it IS the next best thing to Lost people!

  17. I've never watched Bones either & I agree Dexter all the way.

Had to laugh at your last comment, I've never watched neither Charmed nor The Gilmore Girls so I picked The Gilmore Girls; why? I have no friggin idea hahaha

    ReplyDelete
  18. I must respectfully disagree about Dexter being over rated. Not only is the plot each season "sit on the edge of your seat" brilliant, but this show is loaded with top rate actors & actresses. There IS a reason this show is constantly nominated for awards and so are the actors (namely Michael C Hall).

Might I remind everyone that Michael C Hall and John Lithgow both won Golden Globes for the last season of Dexter; do not be surprised when they both win Emmy's for their respective categories this year (no disrepect to the awesome actors of Lost).

  19. I watch and love both shows. But I voted for Bones, because Bones is a show that everyone can watch. It's funny, touching, smart, clever and sexually tense. You don't have to pay extra to see it. It's socially acceptable, and it's got it all. Dexter is also a great show, and it's so unfair to ahve them going up against eachother, but Dexter committed the unpardonable sin last season, and I haven't quite decided if I'm in a forgiving mood yet. I probaly will, but for right now, it's gonna have to win me back.

All in all...if you haven't watched both shows, you're really not in a position to comment. There's nothing about Bones winning against Dexter that is even surprising, let alone a Travesty. Bones is a truly great show. So is Dexter. Bones is just a bit more accessable and less dark and sometimes, demented. I mean, when Watching Dexter, we are rooting for a person that has a mental illness and kills people. It surprises me all the time, that I love it so much.

  20. I love Dexter, but to say "who watches Bones?" is kind of un enlightened. Bones had some of the highest rating on TV last season. It consistently came in second against the nunber 1 show, Survivor and even beat it a few weeks. Got much higher ratings than either Dexter or Lost, or Grays Anatomy...so just becuase you don't watch something...doesn't mean nobody does.

I love both shows. I give Bones a slight edge becuase it has just a little bit more going for it, without it's man character having to be a killer.

Your last sentence is exactly why Dexter should win.

  22. Charmed had some issues with keeping up the quality and lagged in it's last couple years, and GG was hilarious and heartwarming, but I still choose Charmed because I can still watch it over and over and over again...It's really the most watchable tv show I've ever seen...I'm not really sure why lol

Bones is a good show, and has kept up overall in the quality department despite being a procedural with a twist, and I enjoy it, but Dexter is just a completely new level of television, and shouldn't even have to be in a poll for this. It's tv at its finest, and while people say its the best thing since Lost, I say it's been better than Lost for about 3 seasons now...

  23. i love Bones and Charmed :D
i hate that series like.... "oh i love you, oh now i dont love you.. ohh now i love you again" bla bla bla..
i dont say dexter and gilmore are like that.. i havent seen yet, i just love Bones and Charmed. Their Comedy =)
