The Brackets have been updated. How are your predictions looking?

Bracket Results

Congratulations to 'Arrested Development', 'The Office', 'Veronica Mars' & 'Glee' for making it through to the second round of the competition. I was surprised that 'Sex & the City' gained so few votes, but like 'The Prisoner', perhaps some fans have moved onto newer things. Also intriguing was the fact that two of the polls had over 1000 votes, whereas the others only had around 700/800. A possible hint at certain shows having bigger fanbases maybe?
For all those who have entered the competition, once the results are updated, you can check out how you are doing here: http://www.dawgsled.com/darkufo/welcome.asp
Anyhow....
Today, the second day of the competition we have in this post Firefly vs. 24, and also Legend of the Seeker vs. Fringe. I'm very intrigued to see the results of the second poll, as I have no idea which way to call it. It's gonna be interesting to say the least.
Also today we have Its always Sunny in Philidelphia taking on The Wire, and The Mentalist's battle with Buffy. To view that post and vote, head here: http://www.spoilertv.com/2010/06/best-show-ever-round-11d-sunny-in-phili.html

Firefly vs. 24
Firefly

Seasons: 1 (Finished)
Format: Space Western/Drama
Synopsis: The series is set in the year 2517, after the arrival of humans in a new star system, and follows the adventures of the renegade crew of Serenity, a "Firefly-class" spaceship. The ensemble cast portrays the nine characters who live on Serenity. Whedon pitched the show as "nine people looking into the blackness of space and seeing nine different things".[2] The show explores the lives of people who fought on the losing side of a civil war who now make a living on the outskirts of the society, as part of the pioneer culture that exists on the fringes of their star system. In addition, it is a future where the only two surviving superpowers, the United States and China, fused to form the central federal government, called the Alliance, resulting in the fusion of the two cultures as well. According to Whedon's vision, "nothing will change in the future: technology will advance, but we will still have the same political, moral, and ethical problems as today."

24

Seasons: 8 (Finished)
Format: Action/Thriller/Drama

User Reviews: Mein Held
It's just the twists, action, intricate storylines, and acting that are amazing really.

Legend of the Seeker vs. Fringe
Legend of the Seeker

Seasons: 2 (In Limbo, Potential 3rd Season)
Format: Adventure/Fantasy/Supernatural
Synopsis: The series follows the epic journey of a young woods guide named Richard Cypher (Craig Horner), a mysterious woman named Kahlan Amnell (Bridget Regan) and a wizard named Zeddicus Zu'l Zorander (Bruce Spence) to stop Darken Rahl (Craig Parker) from unleashing an ancient and terrifying power.
User Reviews: Carol Holt
I love Legend of the Seeker because it is loaded with action, magic and romance, it has movie quality special effects and is visually beautiful - both the scenery and the cast. I love the strong women's roles and the lessons in loyalty and love.
I just happened to catch an episode on a Saturday afternoon during season 1 and was "hooked" immediately! I am sure with a consistent time slot and proper publicity this show would be a huge hit. There is a market for the fantasy genre. Not everyone likes the so-called "reality" shows. Legend of the Seeker is absolutely the ONLY show I schedule my time around, it is the only "must see" program on TV for me. I won't even answer my phone when it is on.
Fringe

Seasons: 2 (Ongoing)
Format: Science Fiction/Thriller/Horror/Drama
Synopsis: The series follows a Federal Bureau of Investigation "Fringe Division" team based in Boston, Massachusetts under the supervision of Homeland Security. The team uses unorthodox "fringe" science and FBI investigative techniques to investigate "the Pattern", a series of unexplained, often ghastly occurrences that are happening all over the world. The show has been described as a hybrid of The X-Files, Altered States, The Twilight Zone, and Dark Angel.

Fringe is one of the few shows I can think of that actually succeeds in achieving a balance between the various story elements. It has a little bit of everything: drama, suspense, emotion, humour, science fiction, character development… you name it. In a word, Fringe is brilliant. The stories are intriguing and engaging, the acting is top of the line, the characters are people you can relate to, and the quality of each episode is simply amazing. It’s a show that makes you think, without getting too complicated or overwhelmed in its own story and it provides real answers in a timely manner. For those who love to dissect every episode and analyze all the clues and themes, there is more than enough to keep you busy. On the other hand, those who simply want to watch the show from week to week without thinking about it in between can do that and still enjoy it and be entertained. Fringe is as good as it gets. If you have ever wondered if you should watch Fringe, I would highly recommend it because, odds are, you’ll love it and will wonder why it took you so long to start watching.

Thanks again for taking part, and feel free to comment, argue, whatever you fancy.

  13. Legend of the Seeker and Firefly are two shows that definately deserved to be given more time. They have truly original plots, an amazing cast, and are just great shows to watch.

  14. I've watched both shows and there is no way legend of the seeker is in the same league as Fringe. Come on Fringe fans. Get voting.

I take it you haven't watched Fringe because it is nothing like X-Files...and doesn't try to be.

  24. Wow, I had no idea Firefly had more fans than 24. I mean, I knew the show was popular, but more than 24 ?

I was also surprised to see that Fringe might get knocked out in the first round by a show that I couldn't even make it halfway through the pilot episode without quitting. I thought for sure the LOST fans would mean success here for Fringe.

  25. I like Fringe ... but I LOVE Legend Of The Seeker, so the choice is easy.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Guess I am a fantasy / scifi freak, because in my book, Firefly beats 24 by miles. Choosing between Firefly and Legend Of The Seeker, now that will be more difficult ... but in the end LOTS will probably prevail.

  30. Fringe so wants to be like The X-Files it's embarrassing. Hang it up Fringe. Go away.
Maybe if Seeker had an ounce of humor it wouldn't be so bad. Maybe.
    24 just sucks. Period.
    Firefly? Simply best show ever!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Legend of the Seeker hands down best EVER!!

    ReplyDelete
  32. I like Firefly but come on, 24 is way better, way more thrilling and addictive like almost anything else.

Firefly has a great cast and a great story but 24 is simply revolutionnary. Ok, season 6 of 24 sucked but hey, there are 7 other great seasons, and 3-4 of them are some of the best stuff I ever watched on TV. 24 broke so many rules with its concept, and you don't see much shows with a serialized plotline like in here : basically over the past few years, there is Lost, 24 and cable dramas, that's pretty much it and that's a shame, but that's what makes 24 so special, a pleasure to watch it in DVD. Go 24 !

Besides, Joss Whedon has his real shot in this competition with Buffy the Vampire Slayer (I haven't looked around to see which shows were chosen but I bet Buffy is among the most popular).

I chose Fringe in the second poll. This show is pretty basic (and yet quite interesting) in the stand-alone episodes (even if there are often some tiny links to the mythology dispatched in those episodes) but man, when it comes to the mythology of the series, it simply kicks ass. I can't wait for season 3, it definitely is a great drama worth watching.

Legend of the Seeker ? I watched the first 9 episodes and it's an understatement to say I didn't like it, let's just say I didn't know someone could produce such a show nowadays (I'm not surprised it comes from the producers of Xena).

She was amazing in Terminator : The Sarah Connor Chronicles.
And i'm sure she'll be great too in "The Cape" on NBC.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Legend of the Seeker! It's got action, romance, and some of the strongest and best female characters of any show. It deserves another season, so much!

  39. I voted Legend of the Seeker. Epic love, action, magic, adventure. No other show can defeat that mix.

  41. It is kinda unfair to put a 1-season Show against an 8-season show, isn´t it?

And Legend of the Seeker is winning? I was planning on watching this show during summer hiatus, but is it that good, it beats Fringe?

Legend of the Seeker has a similar trajectory as Buffy. The first season shows a lot of potential and has a few great episodes, but it's in the second season when everything comes together to make it an epic series.

Legend of the Seeker is an amazing show. It has things for the kids, things for the guys, things for the gals, hell it even has things for the transexuals! It is impossible not to love LotS - even the people who claim to hate it because it ruins the books seems to mysteriously be familiar with every episode! I love the strong female characters, the emphasis on taking your fate into your own hands and being responsible for your own destiny, the idea that there is good in everyone, even (and perhaps especially) the villains!
Anyone who wants to see the love the fans have for Legend of the Seeker, should check out the LotSvideo channel on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/user/LOTSvideo

  46. Beware! Legend of the Seeker is addictive, and once you tune in you'll find yourself seeking more and more. For the guys there's monsters, mayhem and magic galore, from sinister screelings to bloodthirsty banelings. For girls there's the super suave villian Darken Rahl (Craig Parker) in ravishing red robes and with a voice like iron on velvet. (Sigh) The romance between Richard Cypher and Kahlan tugs at the heart. And who can forget bad-girl turned good-girl Cara (well played by Tab Bethell) or the comedy and wisdom of Zedd. Please renew Legend of the Seeker - this is one journey I don't want to end.

  47. Going to be crushing on one of Fringe or Legend of the Seeker. Both shows have received double the amount of votes than the whole of the 'Its always Sunny in Phili' vs. 'The Wire' showdown on today's other poll post.

Also, very surprised to see Buffy being being beaten over on the post too.
Firefly is doing fantastic against the 8 season powerhouse than is 24. Definetely one I'm thinking of checking out when I get some time

  48. come fan of 24 keep on voting.

  49. I'm a big fan of the Sword of Truth books.....but the tv serie just screwed everything up -__-' Season 1 was good...but Season 2 just messed WAY TOO MUCH the books, so I have to vote against the seeker even if I never watched Fringe

    ReplyDelete
  50. ''when everything comes together''? Have you read the books?^^' In my opinion, Season 2 destroyed the books while Season 1 was able to be good and truth to the books (more or less...at least way more than Season 2)

    ReplyDelete
  51. I've been a fan of the Sword of Truth books for over nine years, and I love Legend of the Seeker. I think the problem is a lot of people expect the two to be exactly the same. I'll admit when I first started watching it, I didn't like it because it was so different from the books. However, I kept on watching and now I absolutely love this show. You need to look at the show as kind of a 're-telling' of the books; it can't be exactly the same because each episode is one hour, aired by Disney/ABC, etc. It just cannot have the same dark feel as the books.

For those of you who haven't seen Legend of the Seeker (or have only watched the first episode), I highly recommend giving it a chance. The second season is where it really gets going (as someone mentioned). I love this show because it is unlike any airing on television today. It is not just another crappy reality television show. It's set in New Zealand so constantly has gorgeous scenery.. and I have to give it up to the crew of this show. The costumes are beautiful, the effects, the music (it won an Emmy!)..

Fans are also working really hard to save the show, as it has been canceled after its second season. It had more viewers than many shows that are returning this fall, but unfortunately because of the costs to produce a show like this (much more expensive than a reality show), it couldn't continue. Check out saveourseeker.com if you want to learn more! :)

Did you know that The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Silence of the Lambs were based off the same true story?

If the poll was titled Best Book Adaptation Ever, your point would be valid. The show is the synthesis of Raimi and Goodkind's visions; that's why the show's name is no longer the same as the first book.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Also, I love that they deviated from the books and added some new story lines. It makes it so that we don't know what is always coming. :)

    ReplyDelete
  54. Legend of the Seeker! Greatest show ever!

    ReplyDelete
  55. 24 and Fringe. I can say that Fringe is my new favorite show now that LOST is gone :(

    ReplyDelete
  56. Fringe is pretty good, but to be honest I enjoy watching Legend of the Seeker better. Save our Seeker!!! :)

    ReplyDelete
  57. hahaha... sure, Legend of the Seeker. *lol* That's why it got canceled, right?! Because it's better than Fringe?! xD

    ReplyDelete

Firefly was prematurely canceled by fox after only a handful of episodes aired, and Legend of the Seeker airs in syndication with little promotion. Both shows are worth checking out.

  72. Voted for 24 because I liked a few seasons of the show but I never liked Firefly. I also voted for Fringe because I love the characters and because I wasn't too impressed by Legend of the Seeker's second season. I read the books and liked season 1 but season 2 was a disappointment for me. Wow, I thought with all the Legend of the Seeker comments over the last weeks, it would beat Fringe easily. :D Glad, that I was wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Come on LOTS! I can say having watched both shows that Legend of the Seeker made me care about the characters more. It has a cool, adventurous plot, amusing and relatable characters, romance, epic battle scenes, an attractive cast... overall a lot of fun, even when dealing with some of the darker stuff.

Fringe... well. I couldn't even watch the pilot all the way through. The show's too self-aware or something... I found myself not really caring about the characters all that much. My boyfriend loves it, though, so it's obviously got a storyline people find interesting.

  79. If Jack Bauer loses in the first round, I lose all hope

    ReplyDelete
  80. I like 'Fringe' and all, but 'Legend of the Seeker' all the way!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  81. I concur, too many readers of the book didn't give the series a chance as they felt the deviation was too great! The books are great, the series rocks and they are very much different ventures. I think with the Goodkind himself advocating the series and the fans efforts for saving it will provoke a bigger following from his fans, however the fantasy elite will never really give it a chance in my experience. Most of those guys would just laugh at me for even having an opinion on this matter, then tell me to read some Michael Moorcock and hope for a d12 on their next roll. ; D (Michael Moorcock is well worth a look if you don't know his work!)

  89. I've seen Fringe, and it does indeed try to be The X-Files. It fails miserably.

    ReplyDelete
  90. I strongly disagree. Fringe strongly came into its on in the second season, and I think it really separated itself from the X-Files. It does not try to be the X-Files, and even if one says it does, it certainly does not fail miserably. Give it another try sometime.

  95. I NEVER say they can't add new thing and I NEVER say it was possible to be exactly like the books...but they changed SO MANY thing..like the whole 2nd book or almost is about the time with the Sisters of the Dark and the Light...and it's like 2 episodes top...they never talked about the Emperor who is THE bad guy...he's just not there...and let's say the Sister of the Dark are just SOOO weak in the serie

"Save our Seeker" is a poor man's "Nuts!"

Props if you get that... To the Seeker fans who don't, look it up to see how to try and do a real campaign. Fringe fans, don't worry about it.

And yes, I know the actual context, so don't bother trying to be holier than thou.

  98. So you watched both, as in all the Seeker episodes and ONE Fringe episode? Fcking hell, you're dumb.

  102. I can't agree more about 24. I think that the pairing of 24 (an action-filled drama) against the science-fiction/fantasy section is kind of odd. It would take out hands down lots of other shows in the first round.

  103. Legend of the Seeker is absolutely the BEST show ever. If you like a great storyline plus two of the sexiest, beautiful butt;kicking women I have ever seen, you will love this show!

  110. Calgary Michael16 July 2010 at 17:05

It is totally attempting to be the next X-files! And it is failing. But that was even the admitted attempt by the writers and producers so you funny fans who try to deny the attempt are just too funny!

    ReplyDelete
  111. Calgary Michael16 July 2010 at 17:06

Fringe is an attempt to be the next X-files but it seems to only be getting the slightly psychotic crowd and the definitely blood thirsty! Complete pass on the series after multiple attempts to stomach it.

    ReplyDelete
  112. Firefly had a HUGE fan base. Easily rivals any other Sci-fi show put out in the last 40 years but for some reason they chose to cancel it anyways and try the movie route.

    ReplyDelete
  113. It is the exact same thing as x-files but with more Terran focus and less extra-terrestrial. And Honestly fails in it's attempt to be the next X-files.

    ReplyDelete
  114. YES it is that much better than Fringe but then again Fringe I have found hard to stomach.

    ReplyDelete
  115. oh no... poll closed... LEGEND OF THE SEEKER FOR EVER... SSSOOOOSSS!!!!
