Castle - Season 6 - Official Press Release

28 Aug 2013

When viewers first met Richard Castle -- a famous mystery novelist and divorced father raising his teenage daughter, while being kept grounded by his Broadway diva mother -- he was creatively blocked. But when the NYPD questioned him in connection with a series of murders staged to imitate crime scenes from his books, Castle found inspiration in NYPD Detective Kate Beckett, a bright and aggressive homicide detective with a fascination for odd and offbeat cases stemming from the years-old unsolved murder of her own mother. Though they instantly clashed, sparks of another sort began to fly, leading both to danger and a hint of romance as Castle stepped in to help find the copycat killer. Once that initial case was solved, Castle and Beckett continued to investigate strange homicides in New York, combining Castle's writer intuition and Beckett's creative detective work.

Then, after four seasons of "will they" or "won't they," Castle and Beckett finally gave into their feelings for each other. Working together as a couple during Season 5, the crime-solving dynamic duo navigated new chapters in their lives, culminating in a cliffhanger in which Castle got down on one knee and asked Beckett to marry him. Season 6 will begin with her answer...

With Beckett as his muse, Castle has penned a series of bestselling novels featuring Nikki Heat, a tough, sexy and professional NYPD homicide detective, and he resurrected Derrick Storm -- the main character of his first set of books -- in a series of original eBook shorts and a full length novel. Castle's much anticipated fifth Nikki Heat thriller, Deadly Heat (September 17, 2013), goes on sale this fall. The previous four mysteries in the Heat series -- Heat Wave (September 2009), Naked Heat (September 2010), Heat Rises (September 2011) and Frozen Heat (September 2012) -- all spent multiple consecutive weeks on the New York Times and USA Today bestsellers lists. In addition, the newest Derrick Storm thriller, Storm Front (May 2013), and Castle's Storm eBook original short series -- A Brewing Storm (May 2012), A Raging Storm (July 2012) and A Bloody Storm (August 2012) -- all debuted on the New York Times bestsellers list.

In addition for the new season, a third graphic novel from Marvel Entertainment - Castle: Richard Castle's A Calm Before the Storm - recently debuted in hardcover format, written by New York Times best-selling author Peter David ("Hulk"). The first two graphic novels - Castle: Richard Castle's Deadly Storm and Castle: Richard Castle's Storm Season, written by Brian Michael Bendis ("Avengers") and Kelly Sue DeConnick ("Captain Marvel") - continue to sell well since these graphic fiction adaptations debuted in 2011. All three graphic novels are on sale in comic shops, the Marvel Comics app, iBookstore, Nook Bookstore and everywhere books are sold.

"Castle" stars Nathan Fillion as Richard Castle, Stana Katic as NYPD Detective Kate Beckett, Tamala Jones as Medical Examiner Lanie Parish, Jon Huertas as NYPD Detective Javier Esposito, Seamus Dever as NYPD Detective Kevin Ryan, Penny Johnson Jerald as NYPD Captain Victoria Gates, Molly Quinn as Alexis Castle with Susan Sullivan as Martha Rodgers.

Wow! With all that merchandising the show surely generates a big revenue for ABC. I didn't knew all the actual books were ACTUAL best-sellers...

This might actually help the show go longer than expected... I don't know of a show that has this kind of marketing while still on the air.

Shows like Buffy and Smallville made the comic jump after they ended their run on TV...

  2. OMG. This is a glorified ad for all the Castle tie-ins! We KNOW the season will start with Beckett's answer - we knew that when the screen went dark after the last episode aired in the spring!
    Epic fail ABC!

  3. "Stana Katic as NYPD Detective Kate Beckett"

Maybe I'm just being overly optimistic but that seems encouraging that she will be a detective, maybe not in the first few episodes but she will be back to the 12th.

  4. Heat Wave peaked at number 7 on the NY times list, I believe all of the others made it to #1

  5. Even though it would seem that enough spoilers have leaked to establish what will likely happen, I think it would have been more effective for ABC to simply refer to her character as "Kate Beckett," creating a little bit of mystery about exactly what her role would be and for how long.

  6. I guess you don't watch Bones. Bones came about by a forensic anthropologist, her name is Kathy Reichs. In the early 90's she started writing crime thrillers and in 97 her first Bones book came out.The characters and stories do come from her and her books.Brennan, the main character besides being a forensic anthropologist is also an author of crime thrillers...

So now you know of a show that has this kind of marketing while on the air..and yep,she is also a New York Times best seller!

  7. Difference is, Kathy Reichs is a real person, and a real author. The TV
series "Bones" exists because of her books, and not the other way
around. Her books are not "marketing" for that show, but rather the
basis for it. The Nikki Heat books from "Castle" definitely ARE
marketing, on the other hand, and exist solely to promote the show.
They're even published under the name of a fictional author, while their
real writer, (Tom Straw), gets credit only obliquely, in a disguised
    little passage in the dust-jacket!

  8. I misunderstood how she meant it.Yes, there is that difference,i even said the Bones characters came from Reichs books.

  9. The great thing about the Nikki Heat books and the Derrick Storm books is that they are really good! (I am not a flack for ABC). I personally prefer the Nikki Heat books because of the clever show tie-ins and that, because of the TV show, I care about the characters.

Kate's answer is obvious, from the non-ABC pictures that came out, and the fact that they re-hired the entire "NY" cast -- can't have Kate in D.C. and the rest in NY doing exactly what??

When Beckett says "Yes, but" the writers will have plenty to yank us emotionally around with, without Kate being in Washington for very long -- and the fact that Castle said "whatever you choose I want to marry you" will go a long way in her heart and mind.

Remember all the wedding scenes and proposals and Kate's reaction to them -- she is a romantic and this is her moment. (I'm referring to Ryan's proposal (like Rick's) and wedding; and Rick's old girl friend's wedding)

  10. Castle is a multimedia success story it is no mere TV show.

  11. This isn't a press release in the normal sense of the word. It's a show description that is updated. If it were an actual press release it would have been listed under the Releases tab of the ABC's media site. Since it is not, it's not a press release. Also, I seem to recall this being posted about two weeks ago when they announced the new Nikki Heat book.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I love how active this show is from a transmedia perspective....

    ReplyDelete
  13. You don't really expect any significant answers from a press release weeks out from the debut do you? The writers have said they shot multiple versions of Beckett's answer so even the photos from earlier this summer can't be taken as fact. What can be taken as fact is that if they said everything in the release, it would take away the suspense. So not "epic fail," just not what you wanted it to be.

  14. Wow. Condescending much? My point is that it is a glorified ad for all the novel and graphic novel tie-ins - NOT that we didn't get juicy spoilers. As I work in the industry, I get the idea of holding information back. Again. Not. My. Point.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I'd say that was you.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Thus proving just because you work in "the industry" does not absolve you from becoming a 7 year old when someone disagrees with your asine post. Can we just agree that my complaining on your complaining has as much relevance and affect on this issue as your complaining on their press release?

    ReplyDelete
  17. What exactly is your problem? You misinterpreted my initial post. So apparently, you have the reading comprehension of a 7 year old. My initial post was 5 days ago - your response was today - and today - and today. Apparently at least 11 people agreed with my initial response. You are the only one with a problem. So again, I ask - what is your problem?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Actually, in terms of reading comprehension, clearly yours is on the fritz; two people down voted you and 8 of your upvotes were guests which means for all I know, you could have done them yourself (yes, I think you're that pathetic). On that priviso, we can agree that 3 people with registered accounts upvoted and 2 down voted, which isn't much better than breaking even.

My problem is clearly your post, again so much for your comprehension, it's not as if I started talking nonsense on your post, I pointed out that expecting information relating to either of the two main cliffhangers in a press release listed weeks out makes little to no sense. Choosing to comment in an unprofessional way (yes, you brought your job into this; I'm just bringing it back around should your boss in "the industry," heaven forbid, see how you not only comment on things from I'm gonna assume another network, because if you worked for ABC, you could take it up with them directly, but how you choose to interact with people in general) is hardly the appropriate action. Continuing to reply to me is doing what for you exactly?

And are you really going to argue that an a comment five days out is less worthy of critique than one posted today, or is your point that your initial post wasn't important to begin with and you're just continuing this discussion because you're bored?

    ReplyDelete
  19. A. You have too much time on your hands. B. You aren't worth my attention. C. I know you will respond again because you clearly must have the last word. So - have at it. I'm done.

    ReplyDelete
  20. And you felt the need to inform me of your departure because...? A simple non-response would have been sufficient, but then I suppose I would have been proving your point without you getting to make a snarky comment about it. You win Lisa, I like having the last word. At least I'm woman enough to admit my stubbornness.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Oh dear. I do actually have to apologize. You are actually a teenager, aren't you dear. That actually explains this entire conversation. But go ahead - I did say you could have the last word...

    ReplyDelete
  22. Just to be transparent, I have flagged both Lisa's and your comments as inappropriate and in need of moderator review. Neither you nor Lisa are making yourselves or SpoilerTV look good by resorting to personal insults. By all means discuss content, but both of you need to step back and leave the personal attacks off this site.

  23. Just to be transparent, I have flagged both Robin's and your comments as inappropriate and in need of moderator review. SpoilerTV encourages discussion but not personal attacks, which both of you have resorted to. This makes neither of you nor SpoilerTV look good, especially since you both write for this website.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I apologize to you Dahne, you are completely correct.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Hmm... did you? And what does my age have to do with you being an idiot?

    ReplyDelete
  26. Actually, I'm going to take my comments down, as you have pointed out, they do not make me or the site look very well. I'll leave it is Lisa to delete hers...

    ReplyDelete
  27. I know how easy it is to get into an argument with someone, especially online. I have had to back away from my computer for awhile to keep from spewing my initial reactions many times myself. Perhaps you guys could go back and edit or delete some of your comments once you have time to decompress a little.

    ReplyDelete
  28. That's what I was just typing. I think that is a great idea.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I apologize again and hope that you see no less of me for giving into a poor impulse.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Not at all. I find it very mature to take action to rectify a situation. We all have bad moments.

    ReplyDelete
  31. My comments above are now showing up as 'Guest'... but I swear, I did try to delete them!

    ReplyDelete
  32. I completely agree. I flagged them myself and sent an email to have them removed.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Usually that means that the moderators are going to remove them. Don't worry about it. They should be taken down before long.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Let's just agree that putting this behind everyone is in the best interest for everyone.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Yes, let's just all leave it alone now.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Guess you all don't like honesty. :/
