  1. I would have to say The Wire, which at the same time was the hardest show to get into. I watched the pilot several times over a long period of time before I actually stuck with the show, but man am I glad I did.

Both Deadwood and The Sopranos I've never seen entirely, though I'm very sure I would love them.

  2. Touch choice today. So many quality shows. In the end I decided on Game Of Thrones, but to be honest I could have picked any one of a number of the series listed. The only one I actively disliked is The Wire. I have tried watching it on 3 separate occasions and each time I was left thinking how bad it was.

  3. Had to go other show because The Newsroom is the only HBO show I watch.

  5. My personal favourite is Big Love.

  6. Game of Thrones! It's in my Top 3 of all time favorites.
Other than that, the only show I've ever watched from the list is True Blood and I can't say I'm a big fan.

  7. Yeah, I didn't get hooked on The Wire until the end of the first season. I don't blame anyone for not seeing it all.

  8. umm... i actually haven't seen any hbo show except for the newsroom so i guess i can't really comment (i'm probably more usa network and tnt in terms of cable, as well as other shows from australia, canada, britain etc.) nevertheless, the newsroom is pretty great. any show on hbo that you all would recommend?

  9. Where's Sex and the city? That was the best show HBO, along with the Wire and the Sopranos. I don't see Grils, Veep or the Newsroom either.

  10. That's my first poll!! Personally, The Wire is without a doubt the best HBO show and probably the best show ever...

  11. Ah yes i forgot to add The Newsroom.. I thought that Girls and Veep were still new shows and it was too soon to consider them best shows but that's why there is the Other choice... I have no opinion about Sex and the city as i never watched it but i probably should have added that too..

  12. I was torn between Deadwood, Sopranos, Game of Thrones & True Blood but felt Deadwood was the best of them.... absolutely brilliant series.

  13. I did like The Newsroom, I forgot about that one but wouldn't have voted it the best - certainly good though.

  14. No other HBO-show comes close to Game of Thrones, especially the severly overrated Wire

  15. Definately Six Feet Under.

  16. I voted for Game of Thrones. But I also really really like Six feet under, Deadwood and Entourage. The Newsroom is also a great series.

  17. The Sopranos, but Treme is good too.

  20. The Wire, The Wire,The Wire what an incredible series! If you do watch it just make sure you start from the beginning, trust me this series grabs you by your throat and doesn't let go.

  21. Funny,i did get hooked in that first episode. It could of had something to do with knowing their work, coming off of Homicide Life On The Streets....

  22. I don't know if it's the best, but my favorite show is Six Feet Under. The finale it's like nothing I ever seen before.

  23. I completely agree with your choices..

  24. The Wire, hands down.

  26. Game of Throne, no contest. Even the attention to detail on the costumes is fabulous.

  27. The Wire is one of the best shows ever on TV and probably HBO's best ever IMO...
Deadwood would be my pick , but it being cancelled without a true ending does lower it a notch or two overall....

Game of Thrones would rank as 3A on my list tied with Boardwalk Empire...
Thrones has the highest production quality I have ever seen for a TV show, but last year the writing was quite inconsistent... Boardwalk Empire has its own very high level of production quality with top notch acting, but I feel it just does not connect on all levels like some of the earlier HBO series like Deadwood and The Wire.

  28. I love Game of Thrones, but I simply can't vote agaist the exellence that is Deadwood.

  29. Depends on the type of show that interests you...

The Wire is agritty and realistic (sometimes quite dark) in your face story of the city of Baltimore. Told through the eyes of the police, the drug dealers, the blue collar workers and everyday kids... Each season concentrates on one level of the city - Season 1 on street crime and drugs, 2 shows dock workers , 3 looks at politicians, 4 goes into the news media, and the final season concentrates on the schools. IT is truly unlike any other show ever on TV.

Deadwood is about a small start up mining town in the untamed Western US. The power struggles to run the town and just at times stay alive in a place without law and order. Some of the best characters ever on screen in my opinion... Timothy Olyphant, Ian McShane, Anna Gunn, Jim Beaver, Powers Booth, John Hawkes and so many other brilliant actors in the ensemble that make for some incredible performances.... One caveat though, it has very course language and takes a while to adjust the realities of the Old West vocabularly! XD

Carnivale was an AMAZING series to me and one many people overlook. It has some actors you will likely know like Tim Dekay (Peter from White Collar) in its ensemble. It is about a traveling carnivale during the Great Depression that is involved in the eternal battle of good vs evil. It has as supernatural edge to it, but it is very grounded and real feeling. One of the more original series ever on TV and probably the best show opening ever on TV!

  30. Hands down, Game of Thrones.

  31. Game of Thrones. The story is amazing, as well as the acting, effects and music.

  32. Carnivale, Carnivale, Carnivale!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  33. I voted for Game of Thrones.

  34. I voted for GoT. I've always heard how epic the Wire and Six Feet are, but I've only watched the pilots of both and am meaning to someday watch at least the first seasons of both, but just haven't found the time yet. I will say that neither grabbed me out of the gate like GoT did, though, but I think that I do like the genre of GoT a bit better generally.

  35. The Sopranos is the best ever. GOT is the best currently.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Hands down, The Wire! In fact the Wire is in the top 4 of all time IMO, 1.The Wire, 2.Carnivale, 3.OZ, Deadwood, 4.The Sopranos 5.Entourage 6.6 Feet Under 7.Boardwalk Empire 8.Curb 9.GOT 10. True blood.

  37. When I started watching The Wire I was still a very 'junior' television addict. I'd mostly watched shows like Heroes, Prison Break, Alias and so on. Shows that were/are great in their own way, definitely, but a whole different television experience than The Wire. But I stuck with it and it was worth it! Now I'm a cable junkie. :-/

    ReplyDelete
  38. The Wire, Six Fix Under and then GOT. In the middle of watching Deadwood and Oz.

    ReplyDelete
  39. That's how i would rank them too... Not so sure about Boardwalk Empire though...I have only watched the first season so far and i agree that while everything about it should make me love it, it doesn't connect on all levels with me yet... For now i would put Oz and Six Feet Under ahead of Boardwalk...
