Freydis and Harald are living in isolation though Harald itches to return to the action. Freydis eventually acquiesces and along their journey, they run into some refugees who are excited to meet Freydis though she denies who she is. The refugees are heading to Jomsborg, a safe haven for pagan believers in the midst of the Christian oppression.

Leif meanwhile is hunting down Olaf, still hurting from the death of Liv at the end of last season. The three heroes eventually reunite and escape from Olaf before Harald and Leif part ways. Freydis is destined for Jomsborg after seeing the same tattoo the Seer drew on Jorundr's arm and Harald is heading to Constantinople to secure an army to claim his rightful place as King of Norway.

It's a shame that they don't get to spend more time with each other before they split off on their separate journeys. It's largely understandable for Harald and Freydis as they both have such grand destinies as leaders of two separate people that they would never really have been able to be together for long but I would have liked to see more of Freydis and Leif's sibling relationship before they parted again.

Leif and Harald spend much of the season on a road trip down the river with a motley crew, facing a wide variety of dangers from a frozen river breaking beneath their boat, a perilous drop off a waterfall and a tribe of Pechenegs with connections to the Khan.

I often like the road trip formula to a story as each little obstacle and event on the trip contributes to adding a little more to the characters we're following and that worked especially well for Harald and Leif as well as the crew they were travelling with. The slave girls, Cadlin, Dorn and Brigtoc, got their moment of vengeance followed by liberation, exercising their free choice for the first time by not wanting to follow Harald over the waterfall to their possible deaths. In fact, they all only follow him after he makes a sacrifice in return.

Elena also proved to be a fun character who could take care of herself. A big theme in this season was freedom and she and Harald have a conversation about freedom before it's revealed she is betrothed to Emperor Romanos. Harald is a character who has a lot of grand ideas around idealism and passion while Elena is more of a thinker like Leif.

Leif gets a lot of room to grow as a learner this season, paving the way for him to become the famous explorer we know from history while Harald does what Harald does best which is get lucky and inspire people. By the time we get to the end of the season, they're both in very good standing as they've gained the favour of the emperor and have finally reached their destination though not without a few losses along the way.

Freydis meanwhile becomes the gothi of Jomsborg where nothing is as it seems as Harekr, the leader of Jomsborg, is more concerned with his own power and goes as far as to massacre innocent refugees for doing something as simple as defy the order he's trying to create.

It means Freydis gets to do what she does best and be both a warrior and a leader, possessing the same inspiring presence as Harald though she wields it more efficiently. Her actions over the course of the season inspire loyalty and she successfully wins freedom and equality for the refugees of the town.

By the time the finale rolls around, she's fully accepted her role as the Keeper of the Faith, using fierce strategy to complete decimate Olaf's forces and negotiate peace with Queen Aelfgifu. The fight choreography in this show is pretty clever in how it manages to reflect each character's personality and Harekr's fighting style is just as chilling, efficient and indifferent as he is, whether he's shrugging off Freydis or jabbing Jorundr in the throat to incapacitate him.

The time spent in London this season is less interesting and a little dragged out for the amount of substance in the side plot but there are a few good moments such as Emma's guilt over killing Aelfwynn or when she gifts Gytha Godwin's father's ring and tells her to never take it off. Godwin may have won his goal of getting himself into royalty - a clever if somewhat ruthless scheme as far as the ill-fated Aelfwynn is concerned - but I think Emma won a much more important deeper battle by the end.

What did you think of Vikings: Valhalla season 2? He is, after all, the leading player in two of the tensest scenes in the whole show - the stalling scene on the bridge at London as we anxiously wait for Leif to carry out his plan and the banquet scene where he has Eadric Streona executed.

As far as villains are concerned, Olaf Haraldsson (who I somehow managed to mistake for Ray Stevenson for the entirety of the first episode, don't ask) proves to be far more cunning than I'd expected even if he is reduced to fleeing at the end of the show after having what I'm sure was a very nice ten seconds as the King of Norway.

We also have Jarl Kare, a Christian fanatic with an admittedly good reason for hating the pagan faith though he is obsessed with the wisdom of a seer he calls the Old One and a prophecy about a cross carrying a sword. When he learns this might be Freydis instead, scarred with a cross on her back by a rapist she gets her revenge on in the first episode, he becomes obsessed with killing her.

You could even say that Kare and Freydis are the embodiment of their respective faiths, clashing together in the halls of Kattegat, one of the most important seats of Pagan power in a country where Christian vikings are seeking to erase any sign of their old pagan history.

Religion is the main push and pull in the season and they're certainly not subtle about it. On one side you have the pure Christian vikings like Olaf, whose moniker is 'The Holy', who at one point tried to force a mass conversion on all Vikings and on the other side you have the vikings who devoutly believe in the Old Gods, like Freydis, who with every trial and tribulation becomes more fierce in her beliefs.

Then you have the characters in the middle of the scale. Jarl Kare twists the pagan and Christian beliefs together to drive his personal holy crusade and Leif falls into doubt and uncertainty after a couple coincidental moments with a cross given to him by a little girl. Harald though is the very picture of balance between the two faiths, idealistically dreaming of a Norway where all faiths can co-exist in peace, a seemingly unattainable ideal at this point in the show.

There are of course historical inaccuracies. One glaring example is that Harald was born in 1015 and yet finds himself in a show set in 1003. The stance taken by the crew seems to be that much of Viking history was never written down, originally being told orally in stories and songs and poems, meaning that some of the information we do have may not be entirely accurate in the first place.

It's certainly a loose approach that likely won't please the history buffs among us (I don't personally confess to having too much knowledge about the Viking age so can't complain too much one way or the other). I get the impression though that they wanted to tell Leif and Freydis' story and Harald's and didn't want to go to the trouble of making two separate series so lumped them together. That is mere speculation though.

Ultimately though, this show is primarily an adventure and it has the bonus of being a fun one. So often I find myself losing interest in historical shows because they're too interested in standing around and talking or taking part in battle after battle after battle.

The balance between action, drama and a sense of humour is what makes this show work so well. I certainly hadn't expected to enjoy it as much as I did and while it's too early to tell whether it will reach the heights of glory that Vikings did, it did at least accomplish what it set out to do - give audiences a brand new set of heroes to root for.

Additional Thoughts:

- Some of the romantic relationships could have been better developed. I don't think Harald and Freydis' relationship had enough progression for them to be saying they love each other (though I definitely buy Harald as a hopeless romantic who would in fact declare his love way too early in a relationship) and Liv deserved more of a purpose outside of progressing Leif's arc.

- Speaking of Liv, RIP to the Greenlander crew. It's my own fault for getting invested in a bunch of minor characters. I'd have loved to have seen more of their bond with Leif and Freydis.

- I hope the anger and grief Leif ends the season with helps make his character more energised in future seasons. His quiet introspective personality often got overshadowed by the personalities of other major players like Harald and Freydis.

- Leo Suter is the MVP of the show for me, lending Harald a gravitas which makes him infinitely watchable. Good to see him be able to showcase his talents outside of co-starring and supporting roles in shows like Victoria and Sanditon. I look forward to watching him portray more of Harald's journey to becoming King of Norway.

What did you think of Vikings: Valhalla's freshman season? Who was your standout performer/character?

Press Release

VIKINGS: VALHALLA, the explosive, all-new exploration of the spectacularly epic Vikings saga debuting only on Netflix, announces its cast, including Sam Corlett, Frida Gustavsson, Leo Suter, Bradley Freegard, Jóhannes Jóhannesson, Laura Berlin, David Oakes and Caroline Henderson. Pollyanna McIntosh and Asbjørn Krogh Nissen, among others, are recurring. Additional cast to be confirmed and character details are below.

The all-new VIKINGS: VALHALLA begins in the early 11th century and chronicles the legendary adventures of some of the most famous Vikings who ever lived – Leif Eriksson, Freydis Eriksdotter, Harald Hardrada and the Norman King William the Conqueror. These men and women will blaze a path as they fight for survival in the ever changing and evolving world.

Character descriptions are below:

SAM CORLETT as LEIF ERIKSSON

A Greenlander, raised on the outer fringes of the known world, Leif comes from a tightly-knit family steeped in the old pagan beliefs. An intrepid sailor and physically tough, Leif is our entry into a Viking world in the throes of violent change.

FRIDA GUSTAVSSON as FREYDIS ERIKSDOTTER

Fiercely pagan, fiery and headstrong, Freydis is a staunch believer in the “old gods.” Like her brother, Leif, she reaches Kattegat as an outsider but becomes an inspiration to those of the old ways.

LEO SUTER is HARALD SIGURDSSON

Born into Viking nobility, Harald is one of the last Viking berserkers. Charismatic, ambitious and handsome, he is able to unite both followers of Odin and Christians.

BRADLEY FREEGARD is KING CANUTE

The King of Denmark. A wise, savvy and ruthless Viking leader. Keeps his friends close and enemies closer. His ambitions will mold the course of history in the 11th century and make him a defining figure of the Viking age.

JÓHANNES JÓHANNESSON is OLAF HARALDSON

Olaf is Harald’s older half-brother. He is physically huge and ambitious; he is a stern and unforgiving Viking. Olaf is an “Old Testament” Christian.

LAURA BERLIN is EMMA OF NORMANDY

The young, ambitious Emma of Normandy is from the Norman court and of Viking blood. Politically astute, and one of the wealthiest women in Europe.

DAVID OAKES is EARL GODWIN

The ultimate survivor. Chief counsellor to the King of England. Born on the political fringes, his cunning ways get him far.

CAROLINE HENDERSON is JARL HAAKON

A great warrior and tolerant leader, Haakon rules Kattegat with a steady hand. Though Pagan, she has managed to keep Kattegat a city open to all faiths in a challenging time. She will become a powerful mentor to Freydis, who is drawn to her wisdom.

Select recurring characters include:

POLLYANNA McINTOSH as QUEEN ÆLFGIFU -- Calculating and ambitious, Queen Ælfgifu of Denmark has a hand to play in the political power struggles unfolding in Northern Europe. She uses her charm and guile to great effect as she promotes the interests of her Mercian homeland and tries to assert herself in Canute's growing power structure.

ASBJØRN KROGH NISSEN is JARL KÅRE -- Jarl Kåre presents a threat to the old pagan ways.

VIKINGS: VALHALLA is produced by MGM Television and will debut only on Netflix. Jeb Stuart, Michael Hirst, Morgan O’Sullivan, James Flynn, Sherry Marsh, Alan Gasmer, Sheila Hockin and John Weber are executive producers. Stuart also serves as showrunner and writer. Award-winning director Niels Arden Oplev will direct and produce the first episode. Other Season One directors are Stephen St. Leger and Hannah Quinn. Joining Stuart as writers are Vanessa Alexander, Declan Croghan and Eoin McNamee.

The Vikings saga will continue on Netflix. The streamer has picked up Vikings: Valhalla, a sequel to the hit series which is heading into its sixth and final season on History. I hear Netflix has ordered 24 episodes of the new series, from Vikings creator Michael Hirst and studio MGM Television, which continues the storytelling of the original.

Written and executive produced by feature writer Jeb Stuart (Die Hard, The Fugitive), Vikings: Valhalla begins 100 years after the original series concludes and dramatizes the adventures of the most famous Vikings who ever lived – Leif Erikson, Freydis, Harald Harada and the Norman King William the Conqueror (also a Viking descendant). These men and women will blaze new paths as they fight for survival in an ever changing and evolving Europe. This is the explosive next chapter of the Vikings legend.
