Streep eventually grabbed the lead and never looked back for the win, with McClarnon taking second and </span><i style="font-weight: normal;">Star Trek: Strange New World</i><span style="font-weight: normal;">'s Celia Rose Gooding (Nyota Uhura) taking third. “Grab Your Hankies,” the
third episode of </span><i style="font-weight: normal;">Only Murders in the Building’</i><span style="font-weight: normal;">s junior season, concludes with a
layered, lovely musical performance from Meryl Streep’s Loretta Durkin, a
riveting and moving scene that speaks to the very thing that has made Streep
such a good fit for musicals, her ability to bring a character’s identity into
a song. But the episode features so many more highlights, courtesy of Streep,
such as the scene when Loretta tells Oliver about her upcoming audition. She’s
delivering some of the episode’s funniest lines but with a barely contained
joyful reverence. “She has a backstory, Oliver,” Loretta gushes over the
character she might get to play, and Streep is so very good at selling the
radiance washing over Loretta at the mere possibility she could get to bring
this character to life. Streep’s Loretta is an insider who might as well be an
outsider. Her passion for the theater, and her belief in its power, are
transcendent and contagious, thanks to the warmth that Streep injects whenever
Loretta talks about her art and also thanks to the touches of heartbreak that
crack through in those same conversations. As Streep navigates Loretta to a
frightening, wonderful crossroads, she also defines the stakes of the entire
season. </span></span></span></span></span><b><span style="font-size: large;">Meryl Streep is SpoilerTV's August Staff Choice Performer of the Month.</span></b></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><b><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></b></div></center><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span style="font-size: large;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvoDLYH7JPLIb6o7er-WIS5hSsQIy-aE8rdaPZ_CyV5RYTX0dhrKO6DJEUayhnWAI8-7p0rul2yEuZSYs5eNEr1OsvopACkH7E5vgnQU3xuzky9dlV-ly7eE3AXBdWlJh8sYH2YmlOBO0Yn4LhT_CLHL-PUsHBP1fDesGzUl5Wl-xgs5PREdaTnWp9je57/s1080/Staff%202.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="1080" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvoDLYH7JPLIb6o7er-WIS5hSsQIy-aE8rdaPZ_CyV5RYTX0dhrKO6DJEUayhnWAI8-7p0rul2yEuZSYs5eNEr1OsvopACkH7E5vgnQU3xuzky9dlV-ly7eE3AXBdWlJh8sYH2YmlOBO0Yn4LhT_CLHL-PUsHBP1fDesGzUl5Wl-xgs5PREdaTnWp9je57/w640-h640/Staff%202.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDajjCMNkSTDvimXrr4UH6YSodGk0G2HrJv1-hTBpWeegqHUQD-ySm7llqR4Zc3axNMAg4oJwuS5JbEdRyocpM1F4ErMnOuq8EqomRrou8KCbAkjyTikcdj5BZM3ny2EhRQg8XUllOS9JAKjcipHnFigoP8knzVddRUf3I7DQ6lsxdxxAHC733Cr5WPP1s/s1080/Staff%203.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="1080" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDajjCMNkSTDvimXrr4UH6YSodGk0G2HrJv1-hTBpWeegqHUQD-ySm7llqR4Zc3axNMAg4oJwuS5JbEdRyocpM1F4ErMnOuq8EqomRrou8KCbAkjyTikcdj5BZM3ny2EhRQg8XUllOS9JAKjcipHnFigoP8knzVddRUf3I7DQ6lsxdxxAHC733Cr5WPP1s/w640-h640/Staff%203.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><b style="font-size: 24px; text-align: left;"><span style="color: #f1c232;">READER RESULTS </span></b></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><b style="font-size: 24px; text-align: left;"><span style="color: #f1c232;"><br /></span></b></div></span></span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span style="font-size: large;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><b style="font-size: 24px; text-align: left;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGKtDwoi_Ps7ov6GpHg12ZVVjHV4xIV09sg2QdhONnzBgS61yNtV9I7DV6NQob2E-QHmjFyT5S_HUvvMs_Z4-FgUBCOny4PkMOumj8HQn7Lwzf3WgsQr73cxCw2dqvH5aLGNND1b5pMavQEAH8AV9RBoTjt41WXxz8WHRwvsU8Qs4z-me9Jutf/s1080/Reader%201.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="1080" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGKtDwoi_Ps7ov6GpHg12ZVVjHV4xIV09sg2QdhONnzBgS61yNtV9I7DV6NQob2E-QHmjFyT5S_HUvvMs_Z4-FgUBCOny4PkMOumj8HQn7Lwzf3WgsQr73cxCw2dqvH5aLGNND1b5pMavQEAH8AV9RBoTjt41WXxz8WHRwvsU8Qs4z-me9Jutf/w640-h640/Reader%201.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: x-large; text-align: left;"><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span style="font-family: times;"><span style="background-color: white;">Two stars from the new Netflix series One Piece battled it out for Reader's Choice top honors with Iñaki Godoy (Monkey D. Luffy) taking the victory from his costar Jeff Ward (Buggy). Taking third is <i>Star Trek: Strange New World</i>'s Anson Mount (Christopher Pike) as the first of two performers from that show to make the lists this month. After a standout
performance in the grisly, charming </span><i style="background-color: white;">The Imperfects</i><span style="background-color: white;">, Iñaki Godoy
dons the persona and straw hat of <i>One Piece</i>’s legendary, beloved Monkey D.
Luffy (aspiring King of the Pirates) and inhabits the role with singularly
arresting charisma and aplomb. He’s magnetic, effusive, and, most importantly,
in perfect sync with the character’s signature empathy and exuberance for
helping others chase their dreams. He’s as fearless in portraying the
character’s confidence and heart as Luffy is when wearing his own dreams on his
sleeve. Luffy leaves everyone sucked in by his gravitational pull transformed.
Godoy’s ability to translate that quality to the screen is fueled by an
approach that’s equal parts kinetic mischief and endearing swagger. From his
first seconds onscreen in “Romance Dawn,” Godoy’s performance sets the
foundation for an adaptation as emotionally rich as it is thrilling. </span></span><span style="font-family: inherit;"> </span></span></span><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: x-large; text-align: left;">Iñaki Godoy is Spoiler TV's August Reader's Choice Performer of the Month.</span><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: x-large; text-align: left;"> </span></div></b></div></span></span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: inherit; text-align: left;"><br /></span></span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdtH1RCoc2b9ZC3qX2xsSFHgMUZCyVVb7HFgWcYnPG-otWFekxtJJGyLrYSnFZOKOATCJcsx5JPqtjzXeUDOJJ4-TsZ-zoYKWbklpzV0FUSMg8tyOt1_M7nKKdHwZNqPRyCTrSoupFFIwBe6dmj2SkXOjYIZfMvjwzWuGQ5Kf6aJqs-8_kGViVByljYNoQ/s1080/Reader%202.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="1080" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdtH1RCoc2b9ZC3qX2xsSFHgMUZCyVVb7HFgWcYnPG-otWFekxtJJGyLrYSnFZOKOATCJcsx5JPqtjzXeUDOJJ4-TsZ-zoYKWbklpzV0FUSMg8tyOt1_M7nKKdHwZNqPRyCTrSoupFFIwBe6dmj2SkXOjYIZfMvjwzWuGQ5Kf6aJqs-8_kGViVByljYNoQ/w640-h640/Reader%202.jpg" width="640" /></a></div></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGPhcAouVCT0oLupboChpXv4E-Q9IWuWY0OTN1kDIStw7meLVJSmYIbcFoW63NsKwztx5ISUP77Z5iPVzMM8vqS3ztR16a81vcBatpyhyZyJftbG2MHOZah8E7rMY24y92NNhG8ey9bNzkG2JKZHO_hRmdkxs2KUzekDrEs_gJ9TXP4QE-Cs_Q5il6AbcQ/s1080/Reader%203.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="1080" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGPhcAouVCT0oLupboChpXv4E-Q9IWuWY0OTN1kDIStw7meLVJSmYIbcFoW63NsKwztx5ISUP77Z5iPVzMM8vqS3ztR16a81vcBatpyhyZyJftbG2MHOZah8E7rMY24y92NNhG8ey9bNzkG2JKZHO_hRmdkxs2KUzekDrEs_gJ9TXP4QE-Cs_Q5il6AbcQ/w640-h640/Reader%203.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span><div style="text-align: left;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: large; font-weight: normal; text-align: left;">Please join us in the comments and on social media in celebrating winners Meryl Streep and Iñaki Godoy and the incredible runner-ups. Summer is slowly sliding into fall, unfortunately with no sign of the writer and actor's strikes coming to an agreement soon which is starting to have an affect on shows. However, there were still some fantastic performances throughout August which we now need to narrow down to those contenders who will make it through to this month's voting round of Performer of the Month.

Please do read through the rules, and as ever we do love to read your comments, so sound off below letting us know who you have nominated and why.

One small, but important, rule change. We have noticed that Google has problems with episode numbers that end in 0, so we are asking that all episodes are inputted with nothing between the season and episode number instead please. i.e. 412, not 4.12 or 4x12 and 610, not 6.10 or 6x10. Thank you.

<br /><i>Star Trek: Strange New Worlds</i> 2.08 “<i>Under the Cloak of War</i>” - Review:</b><br />
<br />
Strange New Worlds can do serious when it wants to; and <i>Under the Cloak of War</i> is a marked tonal shift from its Lower Decks episode as it reminds us; as it has done all season: this is a show about getting to where we need to be for the future to happen. A Klingon defector is brought across the enterprise which triggers past memories for the crew who fought in the war; providing depth for Chapel, M’Benga and Ortegas – all war veterans. It’s important to remember the conflict wasn’t just limited to the crew of Discovery – but instead; <i>Under the Cloak of War</i> gets the job done by focusing on those left behind and exploring if there’s a possible peace; forgiveness – and what that means for the crew of the Enterprise.
<br />
<br />
The Klingon defector that starts this plot off is Dak’rah, who was at the Slaughter at Lembetta Five and the rumour that he killed his own men to cover his retreat – showing his ruthlessness as a warlord. Strange New Worlds questions can there be forgiveness for people like him? Starfleet is big on second chances: and having the Butcher of J’gal on the bridge sees tensions rise. Even Spock gets involved on Chapel’s behalf; creating a raktanjino for him that burns his hand requiring a visit to sick bay. This is the event that kicks of uneasy memories brought back to life, Chapel and M’Benga both involved in the war – the horrors of the conflict brought to life first hand in some rather excellent visuals. The toll on the survivors bears a heavy hand as throughout this episode we see M’Benga grappling with the consequences of his own actions, witnessing his allies die as he didn’t go with them due to his newfound nature as a doctor who doesn’t get involved in conflict; and then – in the conflict with Dak’rah on the bridge – revealing his true identity as the real Butcher of J’gal.
<br />
<br />
It's something that’s been exploring a darker side of M’Benga’s character for so long this season, we’ve seen him and Chapel show experience of their combat before and this is no different – someone as scarred as M’Benga is unlikely to forgive Dak’rah easily and that conflict shows the past cannot stay forgotten. Even in the dining room, the scenes of the characters losing their cool escalates this whole episode to a boiling point of tension: and when M’Benga stabs Dak’rah – it’s been coming, it’s cold, ruthless and harrowing. Pike and Una aren’t perfect crew leaders but it feels like they should have done more here to prevent the old war wounds escalating for Chapel and M’Benga, one of the roles Pike has taken this season has been a backseat Captain and hasn’t really had the chance to be front and centre as often as he has had in the past – this season seems to be more about his individual crew members, and it’s better for that: M’Benga was lucky that Chapel was on hand to defend his actions as self-defence, and M’Benga vows he didn’t start it. If there was a meaning for this episode it’s summed up by M’Benga’s final lines: some things are never broken, just managed.

<b><i>Star Trek: Strange New Worlds</i> 2.09 “<i>Subspace Rhapsody</i>” – Review:</b>
<br />
<br />
Star Trek has a long history of silliness, so with the episodic format, I’m surprised that the showrunners were able to hold their restraint long enough to give us a musical episode this deep into the second season of the show, and I’m glad they did – because what a choice it was, and naturally, anything that even allows these characters to have the slightest bit of fun looks set to break the fandom apart because we’re not allowed to have gimmicky standalone episodes that didn’t populate The Next Generation and beyond. Subspace Rhapsody is no different to the grand history of <i>Star Trek</i> – it’s experimental, lightning in a bottle – if you don’t like musicals and you don’t like crossovers, you’re probably not having a great time this season, but my counter argument: where’s the fun in not liking musicals or crossovers?
<br />
<br />
Encountering an unknown alien anomaly leads the crew of the Enterprise to try and communicate with it via an old musical song; which has the opposite effect and vibrates back into the entire ship – just in time for James Kirk to arrive for some valuable experience shadowing Captain Pike. We’ve seen Kirk take up much of the screentime this season but history has him on the Enterprise – so of course; the closer to him becoming Captain we reach, the closer he’s going to get. I like that he’s still a background character but for those who were unhappy with the lack of meeting between him and La’an earlier in the season; they got that here – with the characters conveying their hidden emotions and desires through song – previously stoic characters that they never would’ve thought of previously, such as Una and Spock, breaking into dance numbers. The early highlight of Una and Kirk shining a spotlight on the innermost feelings like it’s no big deal kicks off La’an’s struggles, as the silent observer – and her own musical number showcases that this episode has a greater significance than you can imagine on a personal level for these characters.
<br />
<br />
La’an has the talk with Kirk, it’s to beat the news about the time-travelling coming out to the rest of the crew of the Enterprise and maybe more. She tells him about her Kirk – the Kirk from another universe; not ruling anything out from happening here but not expecting it to. It goes terribly of course: this Kirk has a child and a partner back home, which nips that romance in the bud before it could start again. But we’ve already seen it play to where it could go earlier in the season – but La’an’s fate is new, after all: one of the breakout characters of last season is entirely a non-legacy crew member.
<br />
<br />
This episode operated around the crux of 2 relationships as you’d expect from a musical: the big heavy hitter between Spock and Chapel after having planted the seeds last season. Spock finally allowed himself to open up around Chapel and become someone different to the point that Boiler noticed; but the end had to come at some point and it came here. Ethan Peck got to sing “<i>I’m the X</i>” to add to the number opposite Jess Bush’s “<i>I’m Ready</i>”, and each actor got the chance to sing. Chapel’s fellowship opened up a whole new world for her beyond the Enterprise – she’s earned it, deserved it after all – and it was great to see the characters spread their wings. Would that mean no more Chapel? Or more likely: a significant time jump in-between the second and third series. We get an answer as to why Spock is like the Spock Boiler knows – and it’s devastating.
<br />
<br />
Oh: and the Klingons in this episode provided much needed comic relief, too. Their “We Are One” cameo where they were insulted by their dancing brought in all the heavy hitters to singing – it’s the kind of trick <i>Wynonna Earp</i> would’ve pulled in its heyday so it’s the sort of show that Melanie Scrofano excels at. Everyone’s got a good singing voice and the musical numbers are quite catchy, to say the least.
<br />

<b><i>Star Trek: Strange New Worlds</i> 2.10 “<i>Hegemony</i>” – Review</b>
<br />
<br />
The Gorn leave a heavy shadow over the cast and characters in Strange New Worlds; filling the void of the lack of ability for the characters to use the Borg without timeline shenanigans; and the fact that they’ve been used so predominantly in Picard recently using them again so soon would feel like too much. The opening is strong: Captain Batel and her crew – now with Chapel among their numbers, are on the surface of a colony on the edge of Federation space when they’re attacked by the Gorn – that destroy their ship, much of the colony and send the people into chaos.
<br />
<br />
Interaction with the Gorn would provoke another war; but Pike has personal stakes here, and so too does Spock. Due to the close connections the crew of the Enterprise has with Batel’s crew and the Gorn as an enemy, it’s personal – and the Enterprise wastes no time in disobeying federation orders to infiltrate Gorn space after sending out a line dictating their territory. We can see how deftly over the past few episodes that I’ve reviewed here Strange New Worlds can balance a tone – and going straight from the musical episode into this feels like a real callback to <i>The Next Generation</i> which it imitates in more ways than one: even though there’s no Borg here, the whole thing feels very <i>Best of Both Worlds</i>.
<br />
<br />
The crew are able to beam themselves down to the surface of the planet whilst Spock successfully finds and rescues Chapel, as if anyone believed for a second that she would be dead early on. The reunion was satisfying but there’s greater things at play here and that’s been the case for reunions in this show – the Kirk/La’an reunion was all-too brief, but there’s more to come later in that department, speeding through the relationship drama in favour of getting to the main plot and accelerating the stakes whilst giving the narrative a beating heart. Relationships anchoring the character drama amplifies rather than diminishes the stakes in this case – and it all factors into a chilling finale.
<br />
<br />
But first – as we get closer and closer to the timeline of the original series; we see more of the original team of the Enterprise join in with Mr. Scott; one of the many familiar faces show up as a younger version with all the energy of a tech genius who’s capable of luring Pike and his crew into an ambush and trapping them before realising they’re human. One thing the casting department has excelled at all season has been the casting of this new look Enterprise crew – Martin Quinn makes an excellent impression as Scotty and all the ingredients are there for him to be a regular in Season 3; especially given his story of him being the only survivor of his ship giving him no option to return there. A lot of the crew of the Enterprise have been forged in the conflict of war – and the latest addition is no different. Even Sam Kirk; for once involved in a conflict without his brother present – has a vendetta against the Gorn.
<br />
<br />
The final revelation came not long after certain members of the crew were able to be beamed back to the Enterprise; and that’s Batel is infected by the Gorn. It’s a very Best of Both Worlds cliffhanger: instead of Kirk, it’s Batel – who we may end up losing. The stakes couldn’t have been higher, Batel in danger, sealed up with the potential to go full Alien, and oh yes, half of the crew trapped – held hostage on the Gorn ship. It’s cliffhanger – old Trek style – and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
<br />
<br />
It's also worth pointing out that as much as I love current <i>Star Trek</i>, this isn’t the highs of the franchise that many have been claiming. Remember the 90s heyday? That was everywhere. The heyday of Trek won’t be back until we get some peak 90s 20+ episode seasons, thank you very much. But Trek couldn’t be in a better place right now in this moment: <i>Picard</i> and <i>Strange New Worlds</i> wrapped two of the best shows of the year, and more like this, please and thank you.

We're over halfway through the year already, with July showcasing an absolute deluge of worthy acts to pick your favourite performances from. Which ones will will make it in to this month's round of nominations for Performer of the Month? Please do read through the rules, and as ever we do love to read your comments, so sound off below letting us know who you have nominated and why.
<br><br>
One small, but important, rule change. We have noticed that Google has problems with episode numbers that end in 0, so we are asking that all episodes are inputted with nothing between the season and episode number instead please. i.e. 412, not 4.12 or 4x12 and 610, not 6.10 or 6x10. Thank you.

<br /><b><i>Star Trek: Strange New Worlds</i> 2x06 “<i>Lost in Translation</i>” – Review:</b>
<br />
<br />
<i>Lost in Translation</i> explores aliens in a way that pushes the boundaries of what we know to be alien. Far too often science fiction shows, Trek included, will have these “aliens”, be vaguely humanoid – but this allowed us to draw some inspiration from Denis Villeneuve’s <i>Arrival</i> for a mind-bending science fiction spectacular of an hour centered around Uhura, who seems to be the only one experiencing hallucinations and hearing strange sounds as Starfleet, led by Captain Pike – now a Fleet Commander, as much as he tries to play it down, advance their mining fleet capabilities.
<br />
<br />
Celia Rose Gooding puts in a tremendous performance as Uhura and has done the entire series; able to give depth to the crisis the character is going through: a communications officer who can’t communicate gets the point of this episode across; and into the void steps Kirk, this reality’s Kirk, who doesn’t have that connection with La’an, and is instead getting into scraps with his brother Sam, in true Kirk fashion, with the weighty reputation of their father weighing down on them: James is the idealist, Sam is happier in his station but could do without James making things worse for him by succeeding in his father’s image. It’s interesting to watch Strange New Worlds almost make this episode act as a way to introduce the main timeline’s version of Kirk, which is why it’s almost a shame that La’an and Kirk never got that chat (but then, what would they talk about, given La’an can’t tell him what they’ve been through?) – but almost more impressively; <i>Strange New Worlds</i> had the restraint to avoid making Kirk meet Spock for the first time the big set-piece of the episode; but keep it refreshingly low-key, to a chess game. It’s a touch different from the bravado of the Abrams blockbuster flair, and <i>Strange New Worlds</i> feels like the anti-2009 reboot in many ways, which whilst I like it – is needed for Trek at this point. The youthful energy, the leadership drive and the ego is there – and the care that Wesley puts into his performance really makes it for me. It’s cheese – but it’s the kind of cheese this series thrives on.
<br />
<br />
Listening to others and empathy is the key message of <i>Lost in Translation</i>, with Pike willing to take the blame for Uhura’s actions should anything go wrong. Giving the show a canon-compliant way to have Kirk and Pike meet when Pike was a fleet commander was by far the littlest of touches but it went a long way; and Kirk being used to serve Uhura’s story was a fantastic needed depth here. Using this as an epilogue almost to explore Hemmer’s death showcases much to the strength Uhura has come as a character; but we see that reflected in the B-plot, much of the episode revolves around Una and Peila clashing over their differences: Una can’t understand why Peila, someone hundreds of years old, has never advanced beyond where she was – and Peila is content with life and who she is as a person. It’s a dynamic that gets the both out of both characters, and supplements the a-story of the aliens only being understood by being listened to very nicely indeed – and fits in with the image of these early versions of the characters that the show likes to remind us that these are very-early versions of the characters so well.
<br />
<br />
<b><i>Star Trek: Strange New Worlds</i> 2x07 “<i>Those Old Scientists</i>” – Review:</b>
<br />
<br />
We’ve been wondering for a while whether Trek can do a crossover with such shows given the fact that now; all 4 series – <i>Discovery, Lower Decks, Strange New Worlds</i> and the recently-finished <i>Picard</i> – take place in different timelines – it would take some time-travel nonsense to establish Boimler and Mariner, back in the past – from a timeline where every crewmember on the bridge of the Enterprise is the stuff of legends; giving them the same reception that likely, any fan would’ve had from real-life had they ended up on the Enterprise the following morning. It’s a brutal awakening for Boimler, who’s wonderfully played by Jack Quaid who isn’t prepared for any of this time-travel nonsense at all. Thankfully, time travel is where Trek excels at – we saw earlier in the season how good the results could be, and Those Old Scientists revels in that. We can jump over the hows and the whys of time-travel and get straight into everything, with the crew wasting no time on reactivating the portal to send Boimler back. Unfortunately, he’s joined by the hyperactive Mariner – making life on the Enterprise so much more harder for everyone involved. The change of pace to open with a Lower Decks intro may confuse those who aren’t fans of the show – but then again; if you’re not, you’re missing out on some golden Trek.
<br />
<br />
Newsome matches the same energy of chaos that her cartoon counterpoint had and both her and Quaid showcase how good voice-acting work needs to be for their characters and how much it’s a testament to their brilliance that it fits in seamlessly here. We see more comments raised about how this Spock is careering off-course from his canon persona in the relationship with Nurse Chapel; which is worrying Boimler, who thinks it’s something he’s done. We see the knock-on effects of the Strange New Worlds characters’ actions in the future though that please them: “Ad Astra Per Aspera” is mentioned; brought back to show Una’s impact in the trial; a feat that she’s impressed with. Pike’s birthday is a National Holiday; and he’s surprised to learn that Boimler dressed as him for Halloween. As weird as it is for Boimler and Mariner to meet their heroes – it’s weirder for the crew of the Enterprise to learn that their actions will echo throughout history. Boimler and Mariner come from a point in space history similar to where we are now on Earth: everything is discovered, there’s no more age of exploration waiting for them – whilst the crew of the Enterprise are blindly stumbling in the dark. The events of the original series; let alone <i>Voyager</i> or <i>The Next Generation</i>, haven’t happened yet – and there’s ramifications to be felt everywhere. Boimler may have also queued up the Chapel/Spock break-up before it can even become a relationship; such a crucial point of the season so far it’s almost flying under the radar. Seeing Spock smiling is a feature that I love puts Boimler on the track to something being wrong from the off – and whilst Jess Bush’s Chapel is one of the most underutilised members of the crew; her material this week was fantastic as usual. This is the most devastating revelation of the future – that there is no future where Chapel and Spock can exist in together.
<br />
<br />
Those who aren’t fans of <i>Lower Decks</i> may be alienated by this episode but then again; this is the boldness of Lower Decks that means we can breach this subject with an open-mind – animation is no lesser artform, and should be embraced – and I love that Trek has had the courage to go there; the nice touch about the aliens being pirates and actually scientists really wanting acknowledgement for their discovery set them on a course to join the federation showed that communication again; is key – and Strange New Worlds bringing the best out of these characters is a fantastic decision.

<b><i>Star Trek: Strange New Worlds</i> 2.04 “<i>Among The Lotus Eaters</i>”</b>
<br />
<br />
<i>Among the Lotus Eaters</i> takes us to a planet that wipes your memory the longer you stay on it – thanks to the result of an asteroid that gets in the way; in a very matter of fact callback to the tones of the case of the week episodes of the original series. Pike takes Dr. M’Benga and La’an with him to find out what happened to the planet that claimed the lives of prior Starfleet officers; but the situation turns into a difficult one when their memories go and they’re captured by an officer who’s gone rogue: a ghost from Pike’s past that he thought was dead and abandoned; mourned whilst he became a ruler on the world.
<br />
<br />
It's very much a character study of the episode and I like the way that <i>Strange New World</i>s structures its almost anthology narrative; taking time to spend with the characters depending on the need for the episodes. This one puts the relationship between Pike and Captain Batel under the spotlight, and again, its always a joy to watch Anson Mount and Melanie Scrofano share the same screen together, both rivalling each other’s brilliance: but their relationship has hit a bit of a rocky patch and Pike must learn not to turn someone away – so he goes to a planet where he forgets who Captain Babel is and clinging onto her memories and her ideals whilst down there means that he can bring her back. It’s a basic character drama moment but it gives Pike and Babel room to see their relationship and asks a basic question: can workaholics find love? Pike’s so focused on his crew – to the point that’s the only reason why he has the dedication to succeed in Among The Lotus Eaters, when he forgets who he is.
<br />
<br />
Meanwhile getting some big kickass moments for Ortegas was great to see. The Enterprise in full shut down mode; she realised – the best place for her was to be at the captain of the ship; and seeing Spock undo all of his good development strides that he’s made as a character and work back to a Vulcan with no memory was fascinating; the ultimate chaos for such an organised species. Ortegas taking command of the Enterprise – putting together the pieces that she was a pilot; meant that the Enterprise had an easier time of things than those back on the surface of the planet and that was to be expected. Pike, M’Benga and La’an – especially La’an – went through hell.
<br />
<br />
La’an – after the time-travelling escapade last episode, almost found herself on the brink of death. It’s a moment that again propelled us to remind Pike that he’s there to help his crew, it’s what he does – the well shot moment in the temple was a visual callback to There Will Be Blood almost; with Daniel Day-Lewis and the Pike role, there were a lot of similarities with the visual cues. If not the tone of the scene: but the revelation of Pike regaining his memories worked wonders. The whole episode ultimately did what <i>Strange New Worlds</i> does best: capture the thrill of the early monster of the week epsiodes; with the style and bravado that it needed to.
<br />
<br />
<b><i>Star Trek: Strange New Worlds</i> 2.05 “<i>Charades</i>” – Review</b>
<br />
<br />
After the memory-forgetting episode of the previous hour it was time we got a Spock centric one and this one literally; was a Vulcan-forgetting episode. The case-by-case standalone episodes allow each of the characters who may not have showed up in the last episode time to shine here and instead we switch focus to Spock and Christine Chapel, played by Jess Bush, who have developed an intimate connection much to the confusion of the crew ahead of Spock’s planned ceremonial dinner with T'Pring and her hardline Vulcan family. It’s a classic soap opera plot made more complex when meeting advance beings, Spock finds himself rendered human – and we get to see the Vulcan adapt to life as a human with all the quirks of adolescence and dealing with emotions and a sensory overload for the first time.
<br />
<br />
Ethan Peck has been perfectly cast to play the young Spock and he does a great job at bringing the character to life. The dynamics with the rest of the crew have always been from the outside looking in – Spock not getting the increasingly drunk Una, La’an, Uhuru and Ortegas talking about their shared in-jokes until he’s turned and then having to act human by them teaching him compassion and friendship. But the stakes are higher: now he has to lie to T’Pring’s family and convince them that he’s more of a Vulcan than a human.
<br />
<br />
The relationship between Chapel and Spock (I loved M’Benga’s look of confusion when he sees Chapel shoot a glance Spock’s way in the lift) developed a bit suddenly and as a result of Chapel seeing Spock to help her prep for her own interview about leaving Enterprise for the prospect of her career. But as has happened with La’an, a bit under different circumstances, we soon find that the best place for her is on the ship: the increased emotional connection that the two shared echoed the rediscovery of Pike and Babel’s relationship in the previous week, when people spend this long in closed quarters with each other relationships are only bound to form.
<br />
<br />
The corporal entity and their advancement in knowledge was a fun development that led to a misunderstanding similar to what Spock would have misunderstood – it was a nice touch to have the alien not openly be the villain; just a case of misunderstanding the attitudes of the then-present and being a little blunt in doing so. If this were Doctor Who or Buffy we would’ve had a tease at a season-long big bad buy now; but <i>Strange New Worlds</i>’ commitment to the episodic structure is a lifesaver in this current age of television – it’s the ultimate comfort show right now.
<br />
<br />
I don’t think T’Pring deserved Spock pulling the whole “I couldn’t trust you because you’re a Vulcan and you won’t lie” bullshit but it was worth it for the whole reveal that he’d tricked her parents; who bring the in-law attitude to the table that everyone who’s experienced dealing with in-laws will relate to, Vulcan or no. I’m just glad that Spock got to experience the smell and taste of bacon for the first time.

It’s culturally relevant to the issues of today and being proud to be who you are – and represents the true vision of Gene Roddenbery’s work: a vision of the future, unblinkered by change.
<br />
<br />
One thing that I like about Strange New Worlds is that two episodes in we still haven’t had a Pike-centric episode and considering he’s the lead, it shows that the strengths of this series really is an ensemble. Anson Mount races halfway across the universe to the Voltara Nebula in search of Neera, played by Yetide Badaki, fantastic, an Illyrian lawyer and former friend of Una to take command. Badaki and Romijn have the chemistry of old friends who’ve lost contact reunited, it’s a bit hostile and both actors play it off brilliantly: casting Romjin as Number One is still one of the best casting choices new Trek has made. To make things more complicated; Captain Babel, played by the equally always great Melanie Scrofano (Wynonna Earp!) – is the prosecution.
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXTR3xupAW_LYhAxHeRIANL03KdBikyBoEpUBQZvW8CaqQ8OTvIMWLJiRLH7ld2RCheIxl0Et6qFsbmAX4hZ0IEWcBaI9jVGM1K8Ld8ADo7NzhUMnDeQJvWuQj-wCfsUAfoFEjqNxTFZ7vE92PCSSof00stzAjumN2D8Kr7ZrK2a6xOX6ob2NJ1w/s800/adastra.jpg" style="display: block; padding: 1em 0; text-align: center; clear: right; float: right;"><img alt="" border="0" width="320" data-original-height="400" data-original-width="800" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXTR3xupAW_LYhAxHeRIANL03KdBikyBoEpUBQZvW8CaqQ8OTvIMWLJiRLH7ld2RCheIxl0Et6qFsbmAX4hZ0IEWcBaI9jVGM1K8Ld8ADo7NzhUMnDeQJvWuQj-wCfsUAfoFEjqNxTFZ7vE92PCSSof00stzAjumN2D8Kr7ZrK2a6xOX6ob2NJ1w/s320/adastra.jpg"/></a></div>Let Starfleet v. Number One begin. For fans of courtroom dramas; John Grisham books and legal thrillers you’ll recognise the structure here, this is a battlefield in the coutroom not a warzone. Classic talk-first, action-later Trek. Neera sees the Federation as hostile to the Illyrians and absolutely takes the Federation to task: Captains can intervene when they want to, why can’t Pike be allowed to intervene to protect Una, who decided to become a Starfleet officer anyway despite all the obstacles facing her? Despite all the persecution her people underwent? She became a Starfleet officer because of how diverse the crew was; and that’s something that Trek has always highlighted – and this cast of Strange New Worlds fits the bill perfectly.
<br />
<br />
Less experienced writers would have just told <i>A Measure of a Man</i> again; and you wouldn’t blame them for doing so – it’s a classic for a reason. Dana Horgan, whose script credits include <i>Supergirl</i> and <i>Once Upon a Time</i>, has the experience to tackle a situation like this: it’s some of her best work to date. The courtroom drama puts humanity itself on trial: smart enough to keep a heartfelt speech from Pike in the first draft, if that, it let him take a backseat and allowed Una to shine.
<br />
<br />
<b><i>Strange New Worlds</i> 2.03 “<i>Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow</i>” </b><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlHRXUkKF5wP9sWhWZ6oimkbq4rTyFj6cqz8w8fVQV3TBSTzy1vtmnubXWhQ9A2GVbjNQUUVUeWBVgm3A418rRuo5eLjHq-GCz0hPRoAl1reG16zjxLqe3m0uijddWjuChFOswAMP0O0XecLgQm8FAZDi9Put3WRDFfndUtU12BaWrhVvBlJspsA/s300/adastra.jpg" style="display: block; padding: 1em 0; text-align: center; clear: left; float: left;"><img alt="" border="0" width="320" data-original-height="168" data-original-width="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlHRXUkKF5wP9sWhWZ6oimkbq4rTyFj6cqz8w8fVQV3TBSTzy1vtmnubXWhQ9A2GVbjNQUUVUeWBVgm3A418rRuo5eLjHq-GCz0hPRoAl1reG16zjxLqe3m0uijddWjuChFOswAMP0O0XecLgQm8FAZDi9Put3WRDFfndUtU12BaWrhVvBlJspsA/s320/adastra.jpg"/></a></div>Every Star Trek show at some point must time travel to the 21st century location that the show was filming in in real life; and in this case it’s Toronto, Canada. After dealing with the ramifications of her confession in the previous episode; La’an is walking down the halls when a man appears, dying, covered with a bullet wound: rare in the days of phasers, wearing a 21st century suit. He hands her a piece of tech and warns her that history will be changed unless she doesn’t stop it. Returning to the bridge to tell Pike the news; she finds out that the Captain has been replaced by none other than James T. Kirk, who was born in the stars – played here by Paul Wesley, as charismatic as ever.
<br />
<br />
And then what follows is a series of events that happen all too quickly but propel us into this week’s plot true Star Trek style. We learn that there’s no Starfleet here; but this isn’t quite the Mirrorverse that we saw in Discovery, this is altered history, there’s a difference – and humanity has been space bound looking out for themselves after the death of Earth, from it turns out: time travelling Romulans intervening with history to prevent humanity’s advancement. And Spock leads the Vulcans, not united with humanity in this point in the timeline, into a conflict that they can’t escape from and humanity aren’t willing to lend a hand: the last thing they need is a war on two fronts. Kirk apologises before being called to his office by La’an, who in this timeline, nobody recognises – the bridge is the same otherwise - and with Kirk having some knowledge of temporal time-travel, it doesn’t prevent him and La’an being dragged back to the 21st century.
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMWsRKfg0er_b9sUX__Ot5SUL5YAnnOzmTiveoitAQY1PmjutO2Zcipf8Vv67qRWbQBLemuRWX84P5NJz8Ki15t4N-f5yZMZbIdRL86TLHXt97cPJB5FacZ7ljouD3FC0ftxvZdCxpmYSpo4862x7MZMc6qZeKWI20MSZcZjWNLmr2brua3PMCCg/s1399/adastra.jpg" style="display: block; padding: 1em 0; text-align: center; clear: right; float: right;"><img alt="" border="0" width="320" data-original-height="699" data-original-width="1399" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMWsRKfg0er_b9sUX__Ot5SUL5YAnnOzmTiveoitAQY1PmjutO2Zcipf8Vv67qRWbQBLemuRWX84P5NJz8Ki15t4N-f5yZMZbIdRL86TLHXt97cPJB5FacZ7ljouD3FC0ftxvZdCxpmYSpo4862x7MZMc6qZeKWI20MSZcZjWNLmr2brua3PMCCg/s320/adastra.jpg"/></a></div>Kirk’s reaction is to confuse it for Times Square almost immediately, but La’an is quick to remind him that it’s Toronto. It looks different from anything Kirk has seen: revolving doors, no knowledge of memes (memes really are key to saving the planet); but he brings skills of his own to save them. The performance by Wesley really nails the Kirk mannerisms here – the thrill of the car chase so blatantly ripped off by Edgar Wright’s Baby Driver it’s hard not to have a great time with – right down to the red sports car – but the chemistry between Wesley and Christian Chong is pretty much instant as La’an finds someone in an alternate timeline who she connects with in a way that she gets instantly: such is the power of Kirk, after all – and David Reed was having fun deploying the cliches where the two develop feelings for another: right in time to find what they’re looking for, the source of the timeline disruption and what the Romulans intend to kill.
<br />
<br />
It's Khan. Because of course it is. At this point, kept in storage in a series of bunkers in La’an’s ancestral home. She carries a great burden on herself and the clue’s there when Kirk doesn’t recognise her surname, but in this timeline: Khan was killed. It’s the grandfather paradox deployed to Trek in classic fashion; would you kill your own ancestor? What would happen to you? In this case, La’an would survive, and she was never more tempted – especially when Kirk is shot by the Romulan of the week – in a cold but blunt way that’s equally devastating for both parties. Thankfully he’s not our Kirk, but for a moment, you believed that he’d come back to their own reality. Eventually the day is saved and La’an is pulled back to her own timeline, comforting Khan by telling him that he’s exactly where he needs to be – as brutal as ever – and arriving back in her own timeline to find Kirk in the captain’s chair, inadvertently setting off Pelia’s career path to make an honest living as an engineer in the process.
<br />
<br />
What a set of episodes, what a show – there’s a very real chance my favourite shows of 2021 might well end up being <i>Picard</i> and <i>Strange New Worlds</i> in turn: both excellent. Both wonderful. Top tier television. Star Trek literally; has rarely been better than this wonderful pair of episodes. <br />
