Justyna: It wasn't easy to choose just one scene from this excellent episode. Agents of SHIELD once again proves why it's one of the best TV shows out there. In the end it's the moment when the entire team is reunited in the Sarge's truck and Jaco makes his decision, that left me affected the most. First of all, the sheer look of surprise and joy on Daisy and May's faces when Fitz and Simmons open the door, was absolutely heartwarming. They're relieved to see their friends, to see Fitz actually alive, so glad to be reunited. Then there's also Mack and Yo-Yo and it feels like the whole gang (well, almost) is finally back together. Another thing I absolutely loved about this part was Deke embracing Fitz, calling him "Bobo" and Fitz being confused about his presence and unsure how to respond. FitzSimmons family overall was comedy gold here for sure. And finally, there's Jaco. While the team is busy with the reunion he slips away, takes the bomb with him and proceeds to return to Izel's ship. His actions are noticed by the rest but he's already made up his mind. He chooses to sacrifice himself to destroy the monster responsible for killing his family and the others quietly stand and watch him say goodbye. It's clear that there's sadness and respect for "the Big Guy", despite all the circumstances surrounding his arrival. I very much enjoyed Jaco's interactions with the team, especially Yo-Yo and later Mack, and would have loved to see more of him. While his actions most likely didn't bring the results he wanted I do hope he died peacefully, thinking that he completed his mission. Despite his problems with Sarge, he did want him to know that, maybe so they could both finally rest. Such an important scene, on so many levels. From joyful, through hilarious, to thoughtful and mournful. Beautifully done and truly memorable moment in another stellar hour. Kudos to cast & crew for all their great work.
Laura B: The season keeps continuing to spiral down to much darker place than the first season, as everyone grapples with Madeline's lie to the police about what happened to Perry. This has been the most difficult for Bonnie, since she's the one that ended Perry's life. But this scene of Elizabeth asking her daughter to terminate her life after getting a stroke, makes that all so much harder, as we've been warned over and over that Bonnie is "drowning", but even more so, because little bits of flashbacks and some conversations Bonnie has had with both her parents point to her mother being an abusive alcoholic. I'm not sure if Bonnie could live with another life on her hands.
Jessica C: Chloe sees her father preparing food in the kitchen and walks over to give him a hug. Ed drops what he’s doing and returns her affection. This moment between them is very simple, but watching Ed still express some sort of emotion in this moment contrasting the cold & distant approach he’s taken with Madeline, was beautiful and heartbreaking at the same time.
Dahne: Sherlock tells Cassie that if she really wants to change, he'll help. I love how this final season of Elementary is bringing back some of the old cases. Cassie's story was a big plus for me because she was more on Sherlock's level than a lot of the criminals he put away. Add to it that she was just a teen and it made for a memorable case. Now, she comes back and inserts herself in his life, which allows him to see how her intellect has made her isolated. It's a feeling Sherlock can relate to, and while he is still suspicious of her, he opens up anyway. He lets her know that he struggled too and yet he was able to craft a niche for himself. He offers to help her do the same, if she really wants to put crime behind her. While I'm not sure I still would trust Cassie, it was great to get follow-up to a previous case and to watch Sherlock once again mentor someone like he did when Joan first became a detective.
EUPHORIA, "Shook One Pt. II", July 7, 2019, Actors: Jacob Elordi, Hunter Schafer
The Scene: Nate and Jules meet by the lake
Alejandra: The acting in this scene has made it one of the most tense scenes on the show so far. Also picked by Marko

GOOD TROUBLE, "Unfiltered", July 9, 2019, Actors: Emma Hunton, Josh Pence and more
The Scene: Davia has dinner with Dennis and her mom
Luana: Emma Hunton killed it in this episode, you could see her pain, and how uncomfortable she felt, even though Dennis was trying to be on her side he only managed to make things worse. I love how they explored Davia's relationship with food and her mother, even showing the behind-the-scenes of her social media persona.

JANE THE VIRGIN, "Chapter Ninety-Six", July 10, 2019, Actors: Gina Rodriguez and more
The Scene: Jane tries to come to terms with rejection
Luana: I can especially pick this scene because I know she got lucky in the end, but Gina killed it here when she thought this was it, that perhaps this thing she gave her life to perhaps had been the wrong path to choose, and that has to be a heartbreaking moment in the life of anyone so I'm glad they got to show it.

LEGION, "Chapter 22", July 8, 2019, Actors: Stephanie Corneliussen and more
The Scene: Gabrielle can't find baby David's face
Laura B: Legion finally began to give us our X-Men sendoff by showcasing the backstory of Charles Xavier and Gabrielle, as David unsuccessfully makes contact with his parents in the past. There's a lot of questions still to be had, but this scene of Gabrielle not being able to find baby David's face, thanks to The Shadow King, was a truly disturbing scene that I don't think I'll be forgetting any time soon!

SCREAM, "The Man Behind the Mask", July 9, 2019, Actors: Roger L. Jackson, Tony Todd
The Scene: The fight between "Hook Man" and Ghostface
Popcultureguy: I really appreciated that this show was self-aware and fun enough to know that, if you have Tony Todd in your cast as a man with a hook for a hand, you have a set piece where he has a "Freddy vs. Jason"-style fight with Ghostface.
Justyna: It's incredibly hard to highlight just one scene from the second half of season 3 of this fantastic show. I could name a few scenes from the season finale alone, especially the final few minutes with all the goodbyes and Hopper's speech. It's impossible not to be moved by his words, the thought of his loss and Byers' family's (including El) departure from Hawkins. But since this emotional part is already mentioned below let me highlight the painful culmination of the fight against the Mind Flayer. I absolutely need to believe that Hopper is still alive but seeing him quietly accepting his fate and letting Joyce know it's okay to close the portal was such a tragic moment. Even more powerful when intertwined with the fight happening above them. Billy's sacrifice hit me harder than expected. He wasn't a good guy or a likeable character really, but I did feel for him in the end. His final act being taking back the control of his body and physically stopping the monster from hurting El was certainly the best thing he's ever done. A true sacrifice. Max's reaction to his death was genuinely heartbreaking. These two did not have a good relationship but it's clear how much she still cared for her brother. In the end he made the right choice and this is how she gets to remember him. Losing Billy in such a harrowing way and Hopper's disappearance right in front of Joyce make for the most tense, heart-rending and memorable goodbye. And the aftermath was equally impactful, starting from El as she realizes what happened to Hopper and ending with the last word in his letter. It's been such an eventful journey with this show. I already miss it and can't wait for more. Kudos to the entire cast & crew for all their work.
Zandarl: It’s tense, Hopper and Joyce need the code to get the keys to shut down the machine and close the portal to the inbetween. The mini mind flayer (though not so small) is chasing the gang in the car. Dustin on the radio knows his beloved Suzie will know the answer which is the number to opening up the safe but she isn’t happy as not having heard from him. So she makes him sing their song. Then seeing the reactions on everyone’s faces and the various cut scenes as they all heard it over the radio was hilarious taking the edge of the tension which had been building.
Milo: One of the best moments of the season and the series so far paired Dustin and Suzie in a musical number that brought their characters front and centre for the whole cast to hear in a way that felt very much similiar to The Magicians' perfect Under Pressure number. Felt like Stranger Things pushing out the boundaries and succeeding in style, showing the heart and care that the creators have for their characters.
Laura B: Eleven reads Hopper's speech. After a delightful blast of a third season, the last two episodes push for a rather emotional ending! The voice-over monologue and flashbacks of Hopper writing the letter intercut with scenes of El reading the letter and watching the gang say goodbye, as Joyce, Will, Jonathan, and El leave Hawkins, was very powerful way to end the season.
Justyna: Three important stories were being told during the hour. Since the highlights of two of them are already covered below, I'm happy to choose the part focused on Octavia. So much can be said about this character, she's certainly one of the most complex and developed members of our main group and her relationship with her brother was probably my favorite one on the show for most of its run. Things have certainly changed, more than once, when it comes to Octavia, but it was a fascinating scene, watching her confront her demons and the past. A memory or a vision of Pike forces Octavia to truly understand the severity of her actions, the painful consequences of her choices. Some of them for the better good, others - not at all. No matter where you stand when it comes to her time as Blodreina it's hard not to feel for her in this moment. The part where she reminds me of who she used to be, a warrior, but a noble and understanding one, Bellamy's sister, one of The 100, like a daughter to Indra, the Wonkru's champion. Two things stood out to me the most in this scene. One is Pike's brief mention of the fact that he was trying to earn his redemption when Octavia killed him. The fact that never truly hit me until this moment. Certainly makes you wonder about how things would look like from the perspective of all the people that died because of many of our main characters' actions. To follow Kane's words: "we've all done awful things" and only a few gets to have another chance. Second thing, the breaking point that truly makes the difference for Octavia has to be the memory of Lincoln and his death. It feels like forever ago and yet he remains such a big part of her character, an inspiration to do better. It's hard not to be moved by the flashes of his death intertwined with the vision of Pike's execution. Great editing and wonderful performances by Marie Avgeropoulos and Michael Beach. Kudos! Can't wait to see where Octavia goes from here. Blodreina no more, welcome back Octavia Blake.
Jessica L: Over the past six seasons, viewers have watched the relationship between Kane and Abby evolve, as the pair went from enemies to friends and eventually lovers. These two have been through so much together, and Abby had spent the entirety of season 6 trying to save the man she loved, so it was that much more heartbreaking for her to have to say goodbye. An already teary goodbye became even more impactful as Abby envisioned the original Kane, played by Henry Ian Cusick, during their final moments. I loved the callback to the first season, as Kane told Abby that he was trying to make sure they deserved to survive, a nod to when the council was deciding on whether or not to cull people on the Ark. And it also broke my heart when Indra and Raven said the traveler’s prayer and then Indra told Kane that his fight was over. It was the perfect way for the characters and viewers to say goodbye. Also picked by Marko
Luana: Clarke takes over her own body. We've been waiting for this and it was just as badass as we expected, at least now she can fully fight for her own life without having to take a backseat anymore. And it was also nice to see Josephine recognize she needed to give Clarke control to get out of the situation they were in, the fact that Clarke also learned a thing or two from her parasite is just a big plus.
Jessica L: June watches as Ofmatthew goes off the deep end in the supermarket. June had spent the majority of the episode turning the other handmaids against Ofmatthew and making her life unbearable, so it wasn’t surprising that Ofmatthew went to such extremes in the end. However, it was the look of pure enjoyment on June’s face that packed a powerful punch, showing just how much she has changed over the past 2½ seasons. June had such a crazed look on her face, smiling with glee as Ofmatthew pointed the gun at her. With the slightest of nods from June, Ofmatthew then turned the gun on Aunt Lydia before being shot by another guard. As two of the guards dragged Ofmatthew out of the supermarket, leaving a trail of blood in their wake, June just continued to watch with no feeling of remorse for what she had done. If this scene doesn’t epitomize exactly how much trauma the handmaids experience in Gilead, I don’t know what does.
“Movies don’t create psychos, movies make psychos more creative!” – Billy Loomis, “Scream”

As the “Scream” <strike>burnoff</strike> binge event barrels towards the closing credits, the Deadfast Club must overcome their “Blindspots” if they want to make it through the “Endgame.” Not everything in these final episodes worked for me, but overall, it was an enjoyable enough ride.

Beginning with “Blindspots,” the penultimate episode sets out to interrogate the two main suspects still on the list – Liv and Jamal. Let’s start with Liv. After a night at the hospital spent fretting over her father’s fate and a nasty argument with Deion about his suspicions that she’s Ghostface and her getting him arrested, she’s on a knife-edge. And Liv’s mood only worsens when Kym and Beth show up at the hospital. See, Kym’s decided to switch up the genre (“We just left the world of horror...and now, we buddy cops!”) and convinced Beth to team up to investigate Liv. They come at her too strong on first approach, but when Kym tries again with a softer glove, she manages to get some answers. The secret phone, it turns out, was from Liv’s mom, to ensure they could stay in touch if her dad tried to cut off contact. Liv also reveals that she literally blames herself for her parents’ divorce, because she caught her mom cheating and told her dad (and sidebar – I kinda thought this detail would loop back around to the killer, that who Liv’s mom is or who the guy she cheated with was or even her being MIA when Liv tries to call her in this episode would be a piece of the Ghostface puzzle. But nah, it doesn’t really come up again). This relatively reasonable explanation sways Kym, but Beth isn’t buying Liv’s sob story. And when Liv keeps saying cryptically incriminating things like, “I just went crazy for a second,” it’s hard not to see her point.

Elsewhere in College Park, it’s brother versus brother as Deion grows suspicious of Jamal. Having grabbed a handful of promotional flyers from Jamal’s car, promising to pass them out as a thank you for picking him up from prison (Officer Reynolds regained consciousness long enough to clear him, btw), Deion is stunned to realize that they’re for a party being thrown by the same promoter behind the silent disco in the premiere. Convinced that the choice of costume couldn’t have been a coincidence, Deion tries to get Jamal to introduce him to “Mr. Fade,” but only gets more cause for worry when he discovers a Ghostface costume tucked in the trunk of Jamal’s car. And when Jamal finally admits that he’s “Mr. Fade,” that he’d been working for Shane and took over after his death, Deion accuses him of being the killer. He mentions the unloaded gun Jamal gave him last episode, and then theorizes that Ghostface would have to be someone close to him, who knew his schedule, knew his secrets. “Then I ain’t him,” Jamal rightfully retorts, “we ain’t ever been close like that!” I must say, I was wary about his casting, but Tyga’s been pretty good in this role, playing the tension between Jamal and Deion in a way where you can’t be sure if it’s normal sibling friction or something more sinister.

To that point, before Jamal drives off in a huff, he notes to Deion – as either a cheap shot or a direct threat – that if he were the killer, his next move to “hit [him] where it hurts the most” would be to take out Liv and her dad at the hospital. And indeed, that’s what Ghostface does next, stabbing a cop in the head before violently ripping the breathing tube out of Officer Reynolds’ throat, though Deion does get there in time to save him at least. So that doesn’t look good as far as Jamal’s innocence goes. But as “Blindspots” ends, we see Jamal get a call from the killer, who trashes him for taking “undeserved credit.” He then gets jumped by Ghostface and stabbed several times with a trash spear.

Though the audience now has a reason to doubt his guilt, Jamal’s still the prime suspect when “Endgame” begins, the police in pursuit of him after being tipped off by Kym and Beth. Despite assurances from his family and friends that he should still play in his big game, to not let Jamal take that from him too, Deion is badly shaken by a Ghostface call. “Own up to who you really are,” the killer orders, “on the inside.” Things come to a head when the kids get a video from Ghostface showing that Jamal is still alive and daring Deion to come rescue him. That’s when he finally confesses to Liv his real “deepest, darkest secret” – he and Deion switched costumes before going into the scrapyard. Because, that’s right, Deion is not Deion, he’s Marcus, and has been since that Halloween night!

I’m really, really mixed on this twist. At first, I was annoyed at myself for not seeing it coming, because, given the genre of the story, why else make them twins if not to do some kind of switcheroo. But mulling it over some more...doesn’t it mean that Marcus is also kind of a sociopath lol? His motive feels thin – basically, he didn’t correct his mom when she thought he was Deion, never got caught, and so decided to take advantage of the opportunities (...as a ten year old?) and treatment Deion got versus him. And it’s crazy to me that he wouldn’t have slipped, in eight years, when the night this all happened was so traumatic. Sure, we did get that mention from his mom in the premiere about mental health issues, but it’s not enough to sell this, IMO. And on top of that, the switch is inconsequential to the bigger story – it’s not the main plank of Ghostface’s grudge, and there are no other consequences (it’s breathtaking how quickly Liv brushes it off!). It might have been an interesting idea to explore if it had been introduced earlier, maybe halfway through the season versus halfway through the finale. But yeah, overall, while I respect the big swing, it just didn’t work for me.

Anyway, DeMarcus – a name coined later by the killer that I’ll be using going forward – runs off into the night to save the brother he has left, finding a bleeding Jamal tied up in their father’s haulage truck. But it’s all a trick as Jamal cops to being Ghostface. His motive, as has already been laid out, is that he blames DeMarcus for their father’s abandonment and his mother’s subsequent suicide, though we do get the additional tidbit that he knew DeMarcus was a fake because their dad secretly introduced him to the real Deion earlier that year. But as he describes what he did, it quickly becomes clear that he only killed the non-Deadfast Club victims – TJ, Avery, etc. And with his dying breath, Jamal taunts that the “she” he’d been working with will finish the job of destroying DeMarcus’ life.

DeMarcus is at a loss, because the three main characters left besides him are all female. And by the time he makes it back to the school, Kym is somewhat suspiciously absent while Liv and Beth are pointing fingers at each other, claiming the other has knowledge about Amir’s kill that they shouldn’t have. But swiftly, the killer makes herself known by shooting DeMarcus. So who’s the second Ghostface? Say it with me – Beth!

Beth being one of the killers was a relative surprise, I’ll admit. Given her talk with Kym earlier in the episode about the trope, I had her pegged to emerge as an unlikely final girl. But as she dons the costume and chases Liv through the school, Beth reveals that she always knew she was a sociopath, that she scratched the itch with horror movies, but eventually realized that it wouldn’t be enough (so basically, in “Scream 2” terms, Jamal was the Mrs. Loomis, driven by a personal grudge, while Beth is more of a Mickey, playing Ghostface games just to indulge a murderous side). “I was a wannabe killer in search of an origin story,” Beth continues once she’s cornered Liv on the roof. And she found one when Jamal walked into her tattoo shop.

I found it interesting that the Deadfast Club members weren’t chosen for any particular reason (after the twin switch reveal, I briefly thought that they might have been childhood friends of Marcus’ that he abandoned when he became Deion and that’s why they had targets on their backs), but because Beth recognized the cinematic potential of the group when they all got detention together. I mean, remember, she’s the one who gave them their name! But it was bizarre when she was all, “I’m a remorseless, unfeeling killer! But I also think Kym is kinda cool so I gave her the chance to tap out.” Finally, I thought Giorgia Whigham acquitted herself pretty well in these scenes, but the monologuing dragged on a little too long.

So long, in fact, that it gave an undead DeMarcus a chance to come to the rescue and, between him and Liv, they manage to overpower Beth and send her falling through a skylight. And having learned a lesson from Beth about the killer always coming back “for one last scare,” Kym not only didn’t abandon her friends, she takes the title of final girl by putting the final bullets in Beth. The three survivors promise to make the most of their lives to honor the dead. Nobody else finds out Deion is really Marcus. And that’s a wrap on season three of “Scream!”

“What do I have to do to prove to you that I’m not a killer?” – Billy Loomis, “Scream”

The second chunk of the “Scream” <strike>burnoff</strike> binge event finds Deion and the rest of the Deadfast Club scrambling to figure out who’s “The Man Behind the Mask,” but finding “Ports in the Storm” is hard when they don’t know who they can trust.

After a gory dream about being gutted by Marcus, Deion wakes up to a different kind of nightmare. It’s Halloween, and therefore the anniversary of Marcus’ alleged death. Ghostface decides to twist the knife, calling Deion to tell him about Shane’s demise, and then ordering him to pay a visit to the scrapyard. “In horror,” Beth explains after Liv figures out what Deion is up to and informs the others, “the killer oftentimes tries to take out the main character by luring him to a place of significance on the night of his origin.” Overruled when Manny sides with the others, Kym drives them all out to a gas station in the sticks where they catch up with Deion. Deion didn’t want anyone else getting hurt on account of him, but when Liv refuses to be shaken off and Amir insists on hitching a ride to get away from Beth, they end up accompanying him to the scrapyard.

Once there, they quickly come across “Hook Man,” who’s actually a decorated Vietnam veteran named Luther Thompson. Deion demands that Luther tell him what really happened that Halloween night, tell him what happened to his brother. “A fool in a mask is running around killing people,” he hollers, “because of decisions me and you made!” So Luther comes out with the truth, which ends up being a different kind of horror story. A combination of drinking and PTSD delusions led Luther to attack the twins that night. After Deion fled, Marcus ran off too, and hid in the trunk of an old car. Sadly, he got trapped in there, Luther stumbling across the body six months later. All that's left of Marcus is the Ghostface mask, creepily marking the makeshift grave Luther dug for him. It’s a nicely acted sequence, both for Tony Todd as Luther relives this painful memory, and for RJ Cyler as Deion has to accept all over again that his brother is dead.

So unless the show plans to break the rules of the franchise and make the killer a supernatural being (please no!), this rules out Marcus as Ghostface. And it’s also not Luther, as he runs afoul of the killer shortly thereafter. The former Candyman and Ghostface have a kinda fun slasher villain rumble, clashing hooks and knives, but Ghostface manages to overpower Luther and he meets a gruesome end in a car crusher.

Back at the gas station, the other kids are stranded because Kym’s tires were slashed (we later find out that Liv did it. Because she wanted to protect them, as she says, or because she’s Ghostface?). While Beth frets that, as the “secondary characters,” they’ve been cut off from the others so they can be cut up, Kym and Manny get into a nasty fight, the kind of argument that starts off being about one thing, but ends up being about everything wrong in the relationship. It gets so heated that Kym drives off on bald tires just to get away from him. But while Manny admits that Kym “pushes [his] buttons like no other,” he doesn’t hesitate to run after her when he sees three dickheads dressed like Confederate soldiers, who’d been harassing Kym earlier, drive off in her direction.

Unfortunately, his loyalty to his BFF ends up leading Manny right into the path of their foe. Tearing into the cornfield where Kym crashed her car, he stumbles through the shadows and smack into Ghostface, who bashes his leg with the tire iron he used to chase off the rednecks who ran Kym off the road. Manny manages to limp back to the car, but his fate is sealed when the killer locks him in and sets it ablaze. By the time a distraught Kym and the rest of the kids make it to the scene, it’s too late for Manny. And so “The Man Behind the Mask” closes with the Deadfast Club down another member.

Subsequently, “Ports in the Storm” begins with the kids, particularly Kym, doing what they can to support Manny’s mourning family. But Ghostface won’t even give them a breath to grieve themselves as he has a new game for them to play. Tucked inside a flower arrangement are instructions to pick the next person to die. At first, Deion – still holding himself responsible for the whole bloody mess – insists they all text his name, but Liv convinces the others that naming no one is the best way to fight back. And despite them acknowledging that this is Ghostface trying to turn them against each other, it’s clear they’re having trouble trusting each other, particularly when Liv floats her theory that the killer is one of them (and sidebar – I found Liv very annoying in this episode. I’m not sure if it was the writing or Jessica Sula’s performance, but Liv’s “How dare you accuse me of being the killer!” attitude while baldly insisting that the killer is one of the others was very irritating).

The factions in the group become clearer when Ghostface announces that someone broke ranks and texted a name. Kym chooses to be by herself and holds her own vigil for Manny (and Keke Palmer gives a great performance as Kym eulogizes her friend, making the audience invested in a relationship we only saw for three episodes). Amir surprises a freshly-scrubbed and piercing-free Beth at her house, which turns out to be a funeral home (“That actually explains a lot,” exclaims Amir), and the two dance and flirt and end up having sex. Deion and Liv also act on their attraction to each other, but the afterglow dims when Deion finds a receipt in Liv’s drawer for the flowers the killer’s note was in and Liv discovers a gun in Deion’s backpack.

In a dick move, Liv sells out Deion to her dad to keep him from leaving with the gun. When Officer Reynolds then drives them to a secluded park, Deion fears the worst, but is surprised when Liv’s dad reveals that he warned Deion away from his daughter for his sake, disclosing that Liv has been acting out in “destructive ways” since he and her mom got divorced. Before they can fully get into it, though, Ghostface appears, attacks Officer Reynolds, and advances on Deion. But he doesn’t kill him, instead making him look guilty of stabbing Officer Reynolds. And at the end of the episode, when Liv finds out what happened, she stabs Deion in the back again by having him arrested.

So if not Deion, who lost Ghostface’s game? Turns out it’s Amir. Beth is stunned when she realizes that he’s the one who went back on the group’s pact, that he texted Deion’s name to Ghostface in an effort to protect her and himself. But Beth’s disgust turns to dread when she figures out what the killer’s message really meant – that the snitch would be on the chopping block, not the person they named. That’s when Ghostface comes crashing through a window. Unsurprisingly, a funeral home is a solid setting for a slasher movie chase so it’s a cool setpiece as Amir and Beth run for their lives, eventually splitting up. And just when it seems like Amir has managed to outmaneuver the killer, Ghostface upgrades to some kind of mortician’s blade and guts the hell out of him. Amir does get a Casey Becker moment, managing to pull off the mask and gawp at who’s underneath it, but he bleeds out before the others arrive.

The show had actually made me suspicious of Amir in “The Man Behind the Mask” – something about him dressing up as Deion for Halloween set off an alarm – but his death in “Ports in the Storm” obviously takes him off the suspects list. So who’s still on it at this point? Both these episodes point a lot of fingers at Liv. In addition to slashing Kym’s tires and the receipt Deion found, she’s also got a lighter (although, to be fair, she seemed to be using it to self-harm versus setting a car on fire) and a secret phone in her desk drawer. But this sudden abundance of evidence makes me think it’s not her. There’s also still Jamal, who we learn has a credible motive to target Deion. Turns out their dad had been having an affair with Deion’s mom, and after Marcus died, he chose that family over Jamal and his mother, which “broke her.” Also, Jamal’s the one who gave Deion the gun, and it conveniently doesn’t go off when he tries to shoot Ghostface.

I’m also going to add two new names to the list. There’s Deion and Jamal’s dad Earl (Diesel Madkins, “Venom”), a truck driver who pops back into town for the anniversary of Marcus’ death, but otherwise has the time and space to be getting his Ghostface on. And a parent driven crazy by grief wouldn’t be new to the “Scream” universe (paging Mrs. Loomis!). There’s also Hawkins (Drew Starkey of “Love, Simon”), a classmate of the Deadfast Club. When he surprises Kym during her vigil for Manny, he reveals that he and Manny had been a thing, but we only have his word on that, plus there’s been some jealously and tension between him and Deion. Both could be red herrings, but in my opinion, are worth keeping an eye on.

“‘Cause all there are now are remakes.” – Charlie Walker, “Scream 4”

After a scary long delay (the last episode aired on October 18, 2016!), MTV’s “Scream” series is back for a third season of murder and mayhem...except it’s on VH1. In addition to the new network for this <strike>burnoff</strike> binge event, there are new characters, a new setting, and a new storyline as the show has undergone a reboot. The tradeoff is that the original Ghostface costume and voice (Roger L. Jackson) are back in black. While I’m bummed there’ll be no closure on the Lakewood continuity (R.I.P. nuGhostface and my Troy James theory), I tried to go into these episodes with an open mind and I enjoyed them. So stick with me as I carve up “The Deadfast Club” and “Devil’s Night.”

Things start off in typical “Scream” fashion – a young blonde hanging out at home (this time, she’s being played by Paris Jackson, best known for a recurring role on “Star” and, you know, being Michael Jackson’s daughter) receives a creepy phone call from a stranger and then has a knife plunged into her by Ghostface. But the twist this time is that the Ghostface at her door is just a kid named Marcus, who’s trick-or-treating on Halloween and pranking her with a plastic blade. But the joke ends up being on him when he has his candy stolen by a bully and thrown into a scrapyard. Meeting up with his twin brother Deion, they try to get it back, but then Marcus is attacked and seemingly killed by “Hook Man,” a local boogeyman played by Tony Todd of “Final Destination.” It’s an interesting setup for what’s ahead that pulls in a lot of horror influences, like “Candyman” (which starred Todd as the titular slasher), “Prom Night,” and, of course, “Halloween.” And there’s something kinda iconic about the camera shot of a hook bloodily jutting through the Ghostface mask.

Jumping ahead eight years, we re-meet Deion (RJ Cyler, “Power Rangers”), now a senior and football star at Weaver High School and this tale’s take on Sidney Prescott. Deion’s on edge, not just because the anniversary of his brother’s death is approaching (and sidebar – a conversation Deion has with his mom (in a nice performance by “The Umbrella Academy” star Mary J. Blige) seems to indicate that he was under the care of mental health professionals at one point), but because of the pressure he’s putting on himself to impress a college scout in hopes of escaping all his ghosts by escaping College Park, Georgia. And that’s all before he starts being terrorized by a masked killer. After a day of escalating spooks and sightings, Deion gets a classic call from Ghostface. He announces his attention to “carve away at Deion Elliot,” to expose him for the selfish hypocrite he is (there’s also a great line where Ghostface describes his costume as armor).

To start with, he sends Deion to a silent disco where, in a creepy visual, the room is full of Ghostfaces swaying to music we can’t hear (it definitely feels like, now that they have the rights to the mask, the show is going to use the hell out of it lol). Once there, Ghostface makes him confess his “deepest, darkest secret” to a select group of his classmates on threat of murdering one of them. And so he does, revealing that the night his brother was killed, he ran off in fear instead of trying to save him. While the understandable actions of a frightened child, it’s clear this choice weighs on Deion, and that Ghostface holds a grudge.
Throughout the episode, we’re also introduced to the other members of the titular club, a nickname based on banter they have about “The Breakfast Club” when they all wind up in detention together. There’s Kym (Keke Palmer, an alum of the similarly themed “Scream Queens”), an outspoken activist from the wrong side of the tracks. Her gay BFF is Manny (Giullian Yao Gioiello, “Iron Fist”), a shy kid who just wants to survive high school so he can go to college and truly be himself. There’s also Amir (C.J. Wallace of “Notorious”), who’s caught between his own desires and his parents’ expectations. He has a crush on Beth (Giorgia Whigham, “13 Reasons Why”), a goth with body piercings and a piercing wit who also turns out to be a bit of a Randy Meeks when it comes to horror. Finally, there’s Liv (Jessica Sula, “Recovery Road”), the new girl in town who catches Deion’s eye, but who clearly has secrets of her own.

What’s interesting is that these disparate teens are not really friends, with each other or with Deion, and on the surface, don’t have any connection to what happened to Marcus. So I’m curious to see how that mystery unravels over the course of the season. But Ghostface makes it clear they’re all on his hit list when “The Deadfast Club” ends with them getting a group text instructing them to “show me your insides...or you’re next!” “We’re in a horror movie,” Beth exclaims, further noting that they’re “not the types of characters to make it to the end.”

Sliding into “Devil’s Night,” Kym is slightly more central in this second hour. The cold open finds her raiding a Redbox for horror movies to study up on. She’s midway through the Rob Zombie “Halloween” remake when she gets a call from Ghostface. It’s trademark “Scream” as he taunts her over the phone and then tricks her into going outside. Kym manages to escape when he attacks, but a neighbor who had hit on her when she got home has been turned “into a Pez dispenser.”

This encounter lights a fire under Kym and, the next day at school, she steamrolls over Beth’s attempts to explain the rules of surviving a horror movie and insists they go “straight at the killers.” And she soon has a suspect in mind – Shane (Tyler Posey, “Teen Wolf”). A local drug dealer, Shane saw them all in detention, invited them to the party, and was handing out the Ghostface costumes. With Deion busy with a boring football-related subplot, the rest of the kids set a (rather convoluted) trap for Shane at the school. But when they question him, he reveals that he also got the “show me your insides” text. And that’s when Ghostface gets on the PA system to announce that “slash is now in session.”

From there, a lot of scary movie mistakes are made as the group splits up, promises each other they’ll be right back, etc. The killer manages to corner Kym, whose tough-as-nails exterior cracks as she admits she’s scared. Shane comes to her rescue with a gun, but when he hesitates in pulling the trigger despite Kym’s protests (“His face is white, he’ll be out in no time trying to kill us again!”), Ghostface gets away. And it’s a fatal mistake for Shane as, having been exposed as a “coward” (and we also see in a quick scene that his drug dealing was a means to an end to help his sick grandmother), he’s later overpowered by Ghostface and given a lethal overdose.

Meanwhile, Liv had stayed home from school that day on orders from her overprotective police officer father (portrayed by another “Teen Wolf” alum, Gideon Emery). When he goes off to work, she snoops around on his computer and what she finds is a potential bombshell – according to the official report, Marcus’ body was never recovered the night he was supposedly murdered. So what if, Liv theorizes, Marcus didn’t die and is now out for revenge? Deion refuses to consider this possibility at first. But when he goes back to the school to try and help the others and stumbles across Ghostface, the killer makes the same hand gesture Marcus made on Halloween night. So a shaken Deion is forced to concede to Liv that it could be Marcus behind the mask.

So besides an unmurdered Marcus, who else is on the suspects list? In addition to Shane, these episodes dispatch two other red herrings. First, there’s Tommy Jenkins, a.k.a. TJ (played by Internet personality Nash Grier), the bully who stole Marcus’ candy that fateful night. In a pretty nifty kill, Ghostface sneaks into the backseat of his rideshare car, punctures his neck, and then suffocates him with a plastic bag. And then there’s Avery (Patrick Johnson, “Extant”), a douchey football jock who antagonizes Deion, Liv, and Beth before he ends up impaled on a piece of rebar at the silent disco.

Of the living, one character who’s an obvious suspect is Jamal (Tyga, “Boo! A Madea Halloween”). Deion’s older half-brother through their absentee father, it’s clear the siblings have a tense relationship, and Jamal would be privy to family secrets he could use against Deion. Speaking of family secrets, I’m pretty sure Liv’s dad has one so I’ve got my eye on him too. And lastly, it’s worth noting that, while the Breakfast Club had five members, the Deadfast Club has six. So Ghostface could easily be a mole among them, as they all have suspicious moments in these episodes (Amir shows back up at the silent disco after Deion sent him away, Manny pulls a Billy Loomis right after Ghostface attacks Kym, Liv is the only one not involved in the slashfest at the school, etc.).

Variety has confirmed that the series will air on VH1 instead of MTV as originally planned. “Scream” will debut on VH1 on July 8 and air two one-hour episodes back-to-back for three straight nights.

The third season of the series based on the horror movie franchise of the same name was first announced in 2016. Since then, both VH1 and MTV have largely moved away from scripted programming.
