Other times you’re itching to say goodbye, scooching ever closer to the door, waiting for the right moment to make an unseen escape. My relationship with Roswell, New Mexico lives in that space between. Will I miss Roswell, New Mexico? Yes . . . No.

Last week, I couldn’t bring myself to finish writing my review. My love for Alex, Michael, Rosa, Kyle, and sometimes Isobel wasn’t enough to turn scattered vitriol into organized annoyance. I’d hit a wall. I needed a break. What terrible timing.

The end came both too soon and right on time, at least for me. I’ll miss watching a show that in the original eight characters had exactly the cast they needed. I won’t miss watching a show that was cursed with showrunners and writers that never knew what to do with what they had.

Yes, they gave the world Malex, but they also treated them from time to time like a bag of discarded dog poop, still warm to the touch, that missed the trashcan and burst at the seams when it hit the pavement. Max and Liz were the main couple, but Michael and Alex were the fire. The show should have leaned hard into the fire. The showrunners and writers wasted an opportunity. They wasted the gift of chemistry, community, and fans.

That was bad enough, but they made it worse by pretending they were allies and accomplices, and that, I simply can’t forgive. Forgiving them would be betraying me. Forgiving them would be betraying people and a community that looked at the chemistry and commitment Tyler Blackburn and Michael Vlamis brought to their portrayals of Alex Manes and Michael Guerin, together and apart, and saw exactly who they needed. I’ll miss that. I’ll miss them. Together and apart. Michael and Alex . . . Malex was a delicious thing.

For the last time, let’s do this—short and <strike>sweetish</strike>

Like Stepping on LEGOs Without Shoes

All along, I thought Roswell, New Mexico was a show about Liz Oretcho returning home, after years away, still grappling with the death of her sister. The final episode showed me that it was actually about a bartender named Maria. She was everywhere in this episode. I tried to avoid her, but I couldn’t. Need to locate Rosa. Here’s Maria. Kyle walking to and fro doing doctor stuff. There’s Maria. Michael, Dallas, and Bonnie standing around the desert. Look, Maria. Max staring like a cowboy in front of a rock arch. Damn, it’s Maria. Looking for someone to make your brother missing your wedding about them. Hey there, Maria. Your father succumbed to patricide, and you need someone to walk you down the aisle. Oh good, Maria. Preacher man needs a dancing and kissing partner. Take me to church, Maria.

I wanted to stab myself in the thigh. Writers, we get it. You want viewers to believe she was integral to the plot, to the show, to the story, so you shoved and pushed until we gagged. And in the end, as usual, you showed your hand, freshly tainted with a bit of that warm dog poop. And still, I do not want, but way to stand your shaky ground and go out swinging even if you still failed. By the way, the you get an alien, you get an alien, you get an alien, you get an alien mentality was worth so many eyerolls.

Quick rhetorical question: Maria needed Dallas to see a church in or near Roswell, but she just needed Maria power to see across universes, galaxies, and black holes?

Howdy Doody

Clyde is the lamest villain the show has ever had. He may be the lamest villain in CW history. Unclear. It’s truly a shame that he’ll be Roswell, New Mexico’s final villain. I’m not counting Shivani. She was just a sad mother who couldn’t untangle herself from grief. Plus, she was never a threat to the aliens. Liz was a bigger threat this season.

After 12 episodes of Clyde and his subpar Jones imitation, he was vanquished by the old needle up the sleeve trick. In fact, by the time he burns out of existence, we have half an episode left. Let it be known, I spent this time wondering when viewers would get to see Alex. In case you were wondering, it took a little over 30 minutes before we first saw him.

Alex and Michael Guerin

Did the wedding happen as a flashback while “I’ll Be” by Edwin McCain played? Yes, it did. Did part of Alex and Michael Guerin’s dance get hijacked by a bartender and a preacher man? It certainly did. But you know what? I’ll take it. The show has done Michael and Alex so dirty that up until they drove away there was the chance that a Kaiju would arrive in town and eat Alex. I’m happy for the fans that have wanted this moment since the pilot kiss. It doesn’t make up for the mess and manipulation, but in the end, you won, even if part of Michael and Alex’s wedding flashback was Liz and Max holding hands. Couldn’t have a moment that only belonged to the queer high school sweethearts.

Alex’s three brothers and his mother missed the wedding. In my mind, Clay is part of a private militia group somewhere in the jungle; Gregory made up an excuse because he didn’t want to see Maria; Flint is probably in a coma at Roswell General, but no one remembers he’s there; Mindy is on a cougar cruise with her besties. Insert your own stories.

Writerly Moves

I always get a little excited when my students look for inspiration in the best stories, novels, and poems, and pull off a bit of writerly sophistication. One of my favorites is when the beginning informs the end. I suppose the end imitating the beginning is close, so I’m going to throw a little glitter at the Roswell, New Mexico writers. Glitter because it’s like confetti’s unfriendly cousin—festive but finds its way into all the wrong places.

The series ends with Max leaving Liz behind in Roswell. As you’ll remember, it was Liz that left Max behind all those years ago. Should I call Max’s decision noble? I won’t, but it is. He leaves Roswell, his family, his friends, and Liz to save Oasis, which has been on the verge of destruction for 80 long years. He has to go power up the Oasian cave crystals with his blue flame powers, which is why he’s the savior. I’m not mad about this even if I felt stupid typing that last sentence. I’m not mad that he left. I’m not mad that Liz stayed behind. I’m not mad that they ended the series engaged but separated by galaxies. But, I am mad.

Let me tell you why. We all know Clyde received Max’s blue flame powers on accident. Yes, I said on accident. It was Shivani’s mist mind that found a way to remove the brand, which conveniently required Bonnie’s blood. So . . . what was Clyde’s plan? Return to the doomed Oasis and be lame until the apocalypse?

Let me tell you why else I’m mad. Remember when Tezca declared that she was going to save the children of her allies? Why didn’t she start by revealing this bit of juicy information sooner rather than saving it until right before she was eaten by the upside down alien sand pit?

And one more thing. The turquoise was never a Max and Liz thing. Also, the necklace was an abomination.

Bad writing is bad until the very end.

Other Stuff

Rosa gets to return to Parsons and Heath, her mentor.

Dallas went with Max for because.

Bonnie is a bartender.

Isobel and Kyle weren't really given a moment, but let's assume.

Top Three Moments

1. Shiri Appleby putting on the antenna.

2. Michael and Alex getting married.

3. Sanders showing up for Michael.

It’s been a blast writing for you these last two years. Whether you loved me or hated me, we’ll always be connected by Roswell, New Mexico. And now that the show has ended, whatever happens next to Liz, Max, Michael, Alex, Isobel, Kyle, Rosa, and Maria belongs to you.

And I’m not finished with them just yet. I’ll see you.
Not that anyone was owed an explanation, but it was lovely to see him use his platform to uplift mental health issues, especially the way physical ailments can cause and contribute to those issues.

There is no doubt Alex was missed. The upset over the character’s absence was exacerbated by the show not receiving a season five pickup from the CW. Alas, we need to keep in mind that there are two separate issues. The first is fans missing Alex. The second is everyone missing a good story.

Alex’s absence did not cause the terrible writing, the incoherent plot, the overly packed narrative, or any of the other issues that have occurred. All you have to do is look back over the show’s history to know that these problems have always existed.

There was absolutely a way to make Alex a part of the show without the audience seeing him. It also would have tightened up the writing by giving the narrative more coherence and making room for better character arcs.

Alex’s disappearance should have been all Michael, all the time. It could have gone like this: We take the not seen sex to the bedroom and make it seen. Michael “all impulse” Guerin in the throes of passion puts a handprint on Alex. It would be the queer version of Liz being thrown into a bookshelf or Maria knocking down a painting. Now, Michael and Alex are connected. Alex gets sucked into the alien sandpit. He’s distressed. He’s scared. He’s confused. Michael feeling this rush of emotions collapses. Michael becomes possessed with finding Alex. He spends hours, days in his lair. Alex finds a way to communicate with him, growing Michael’s obsession. He feels, through the connection left by the print, Alex getting weak. Michael feels the sickness coursing through his body, and then he realizes that Alex is dying. Michael is now frantic. We then pick up with Kyle and Michael finding a way into the portal, and Michael entering.

This didn’t happen because the writers have never known what to do with Maria, so they toss her leftovers or storylines that rightfully belong in the hands of another character or worse yet give her a plot that adds little to the season’s overall narrative. It also didn’t happen because the show was full to the brim with guest stars. We didn’t need Clyde and Bonnie and Tezca. Writers need to know when to kill their darlings, especially when purposes overlap. And it happened because the Liz and Max relationship ate up too much of the time, not doing anything new. If I’m being completely honest, Liz and Max together and apart ate up too much time. It’s the same Liz and the same Max and the same toxic relationship we’ve had for four seasons. They haven’t grown and no one will believe any miraculous growth in the final two episodes.

This season has been a total miss. What terrible timing.

Let’s get to it.

There Goes My Baby

People wanted Alex back, I wanted Alex back, so he’s back. He’s also dying because of course he is. Basically, it’s Wednesday and he forgot to wear pink, also known as queer people can’t have nice things on Roswell, New Mexico. And don’t talk to me about Liz and the preview for next week. That’s called reaping what you sew. Her brain can melt. I care not at all. Back to Alex.

Michael sets off on his own to search for Alex in the upside down trans dimensional alien pocket sand pit. Dallas and Bonnie also set off in search of more Theo clues or Alex—it’s unclear. While searching for something, Dallas falls for an obvious trap. Not just an obvious trap, but a trap obviously constructed by Alex. No big deal, one would think. They’re aliens so they can just magic themselves out of the truck. What’s this?! Their powers don’t work. What sorcery, what fell deeds, could be at work?

Turns out the Roswell aliens are like Superman. He can’t see through lead and their powers don’t work on lead. I’ll bet my prized SDCC Edition Loki #16 Funko Pop that the writers decided this little tidbit when they wrote this episode. I promise the conversation between the writers went something like this:

Writer 1: Oh! Oh! I just thought of the coolest thing.

Writer 2: What? What!

Writer 1: Okay. Okay. What if the aliens were like Superman?

Writer 2: Superman? Like how? Like they can fly or have laser eyes? Oh, damn. We could give them a fortress of solitude.

Writer 1: What? No! And they already have a fortress of solitude.

Writer 2: Right, Michael’s bunker. Although, I always thought of that as more of a bat cave. Like Batman.

Writer 1: Could you please focus?

Writer 2: Yeah, sorry.

Writer 1: Lead can block their powers.

Writer 2: Woah! Say that again.

Writer 1: Lead can block their powers.

Writer 2: Brilliant! And then we can kill Alex.

If that bit of information is in the original story bible, I’ll eat the story bible because I don’t own a SDCC Edition Loki #16 Funko Pop. Or do I?! No matter, neither my stomach nor my Loki are in danger.

Granted before we discover Alex is dying, he’s tackled by Michael while dressed like an Ewok. Seeing these two smile at one another is a welcome change from Liz and Max’s season long, soul destroying relationship woes. Michael and Alex are still the cutest.

While they’re catching up, Michael makes a teary confession, telling Alex that he considered leaving Earth for Oasis. Alex seemingly gives him permission to go. No doubt this is because he’s dying of radiation poisoning from all the time he spent in the hole. Too bad his friends took their time trying to find him.

With only two episodes left, the writers decided to pack a proposal into the episode. They’ve wasted tons of time, so now there is truly no time to waste. Michael accepts Alex’s proposal and let’s it be known that’s he’s so in love with Alex that it’s embarrassing. No, what’s embarrassing is that this show wasted so many season not taking advantage of the chemistry these two generate. These two deserve the proposal and their happy ending, but I'm still peeved that it was rushed.

Do we think they’ll get married in the pocket dimension? After all, the show did take the time to remind us that Dallas was once a preacher man. A little bit of foreshadowing? I’m of two minds. Mind the first: Their crap friends don’t deserve invites to the wedding. Mind the second: Unless you subscribe to anarchy, the marriage isn’t legal until you sign the certificate, so sure go ahead, get married in the upside down.

The proposal and almost-not quite celebration sex is interrupted by Alex confessing that he’s dying of radiation poisoning. And this was the moment when all I could do was chuckle and shake my head in disgust. Not because I was surprised, but because Alex remains the writers’ favorite punching bag. I mean, Liz vapes alien mist and gets a Wild West adventure; Alex does his job and gets radiation poisoning. Similar.

Don’t Believe the Hype

One would think Michael and Alex could have their reunion moment without any intrusions. Bonnie and Clyde had gone in search of alien dragon fruit to power the console, leaving Michael and Alex to some much needed talking, kissing, and forehead touching. Sadly, the writers decided to slap the ice cream out of viewers hands by dragging Maria into the conversation. Even when we don’t see Maria, we have to hear about Maria. Apparently, she created something. The words Alex spoke were 93% too made up for me to follow. I’m going to forgive Alex for his Maria hype because the writers wrote that terrible bit of dialogue, and I’m digging his post apocalyptic scruffy look. Wish I could see him in the light of the right side up.

Scooby Doo Has Better Villains

If I told you that you could Google the address to Shivani’s secret lab, you’d probably believe me. I mean, Deep Sky is basically a tourist destination at this point, so why not. Turns out Clyde knows his Google and turns up at Shivani’s lab, missing a hand, with promises of resurrecting her daughter if she’ll enter into an evil alliance with him. With her brain scrambled by her addiction to the mist, we know that she’ll be quick to say yes. We can call them the Legion of Doom. It fits with the Superman theme.

Earlier, in a flashback, viewers are treated to Clyde, wearing an earth toned muscle tee and sleeveless vest, being branded by Jones. They needed this scene to explain why Clyde would kidnap Liz. In this moment, Liz feels a little bit like Maria. The writers are just finding things for her to do. I get. She’s the central figure. Allegedly.

I’m highly amused that Max and Michael have been traipsing around Roswell with the mark of Ophicius etched on their bodies. We basically have a situation where someone sees a cool letter or symbol from a language they don’t speak only to discover their new tattoo says ‘dead chipmunk sex is the best sex.”

Anyway, thanks to Theo’s Bible, Clyde knows that the alien glass in the brand will prevent him from crossing into the pocket sand pit dimension, so he kidnaps Liz, hoping she’ll whip up a cure. He even feeds her alien mist addiction. Should I ask how he knows about the addiction?

I’ve decided not to ask how Clyde knows everything because then I’d have to ask about the burned grove of trees. It’s another moment where you stop and wonder how writing can be this awful. I mean think about it. Alex saw the trees and then someone burned the trees. Whomst’d burned the trees? Anyone with the brand can’t enter, so it wasn’t Tezca or Clyde. Bonnie, Dallas, and Michael just showed up and need the alien dragonfruit to go back to real Roswell, so it wasn’t them. It wasn’t Liz, Isobel, Kyle, Rosa, Max, or Maria. It wasn’t Sanders. It wasn’t Shivani. Jones is dead. So again I say, whomst’d burned the trees? Do we really have time for another mystery or will this simply be an illogical complication for the sake of adding just one more complication? I dare say we know the answer, but I’m willing to be proven wrong.

In Other News

Remember how Bonnie had to make things right for Michael and Alex? Well, she didn’t. Will she ever stop whining now?

Rosa is dropping out of Parsons to be Liz’s sober companion.

Kyle closed the door on Isobel. In what will come as a surprise to us all, she’ll kick the door back open next week.

Max decided to let Shivani verbally slap him around a bit instead of grabbing the alien mist and running. I’m starting to suspect he likes it.

Shivani stole the pods. I blame Liz.

Final Thoughts

Roswell, New Mexico is the psychological equivalent of believing you’ve caught Santa coming down the chimney only to discover it’s the clown from Poltergeist gnawing on a bloody reindeer leg. You can’t unsee it. You can’t forget it. And in your heart of hearts, you knew the moment was too good to be true. It was never going to be Santa. It was always going to be a bloody nightmare.

Until next week.
And you all get so many other things wrong when it comes to this show, like characterization, arcs, story, tension, exploded tropes, inclusive storytelling, and those scenes and beats that dig into the emotional center of your core characters, that the least you could do, and I mean the least, is give the viewers a plot that makes sense. A plot that doesn’t pretend facts established in previous seasons don’t exist because you need to give your veritable army of side characters boring plot lines. A plot that doesn’t fill the short season with unnecessary detours and filler episodes because you either don’t know how or don’t care enough to effectively use the 13 episodes you’ve been given. Honestly, as a viewer who saw so much potential in season one, only to be disappointed time and time again, the cancellation is starting to feel like a mercy killing. None of this is to say that I won’t miss some of these characters because I will. I’ll miss Alex and Rosa, Kyle, and Michael, but I’m also grateful that in three short episodes these characters will no longer belong to you. They’ll belong to the fans that have sustained and loved them despite the mess you’ve made.

Now, let’s get to it.

What I Cared About

Kyle Manuel Valenti has returned to town. As the true heart of the show, episodes always feels a little hollow without him. After journeying through Mexico with Uncle Eduardo, he comes bearing gifts. Since viewers didn’t get to see any of his journey, you know it wasn’t plot relevant. In fact, there was nothing that happened in Mexico that couldn’t have happened in Roswell. Sure, Kyle brought back a box full of console pieces, but let’s be honest, that box and those pieces could have been uncovered somewhere closer to home.

Fortunately, Kyle’s return also meant viewers were gifted with Michael and Kyle pairing up to save Alex. How many of us wish that saving Alex had been in Kyle’s hands all along? Love you Michael, but you’re too easily swayed by the clowns you call friends. Kyle wasn’t just there to save Alex, he was also there to save Michael from his spiraling thoughts, and unlike everyone that’s been saying no, Michael, Kyle stepped in and told Michael that the time is now.

Also, I may have imagined it, but did Michael acknowledge Kyle’s inherent hotness? It was sly, but I swear it happened. If that didn’t happen, don’t tell me. It was one of the few moments where I wasn’t sighing deeply, wondering how 43 minutes could feel like being trapped on the subway during a blackout.

Michael “Never Look Away, Not Really” Guerin finally stepped through the looking glass and into the pocket dimension to find Alex Manes. Not that we saw Alex. Dallas and Bonnie are accompanying him because otherwise the writers would have to figure out what to do with them, which we all know they can’t do. I have to say, Michael has really lived up to the “not really” part of that iconic phrase this season. It feels like he spent more time trying to save Bonnie, find a way to Oasis, trick Clyde, have drinks with his ex, and help everyone that wasn’t Alex this season. There was more “not really” this season than there was during that pocket season where he was having sex with and being demeaned by Maria. I think the writers called it dating. At least during that pocket season, he spent most of the time staring at, talking to, fighting with, and drinking with Alex. There was also that one time he tried to kill Forrest with his eyes. Sadly, I try not to acknowledge "the season of spite" because it was the worst-est.

Also, Isobel staring at Kyle’s face, and Kyle’s noble pining. I wish their relationship had been given the space and time to let the viewer take the journey from friends to something more. So much chemistry, so much wasted opportunity.

What I Didn’t Care Aboutt

Bad Girl Liz begins the episode telling Max he’s stupid; she ends the episode telling Max he’s a barrier, a roadblock, a wall, a genius killer, a joy stealer, a terrible human, and a suck alien. It’s possible some of those thoughts came from my mind and not Bad Girl Liz’s mouth, but inferences were made. Here’s the thing, I didn’t mind Liz laying down some truth, but I also didn’t need it. No one needs to give me reasons to have bad thoughts about Max. I do wonder if Liz will issue apologies for her truth bombs or if that’s just for the Michaels of the world.

I should mention that Max was not fooled by Bad Girl Liz and caught her stealing amniotic fluid from the pods. Granted, since he was on the roof with Bad Girl Liz and Irksome Liz, he should have known last week that Bad Girl Liz was in charge.

Look, we all know I’m no fan of Max’s, but I have a problem with Liz helping herself to the alien pod goo in service of her pursuits. The pods aren’t hers to do with as she pleases. I’m not siding with Max, but I am gawking at the almost complete character assassination of Liz Ortecho. Bad Girl Liz is Liz. She’s just the unethical, amoral, arrogant part of Liz’s personality that she never hid particularly well, but once upon a time there was balance even when she was at her worst.

We also had the privilege of watching her team up with Shivani. They decided they were going to cure death right after vaping some more alien mist. There’s part of me that wants a pseudo reverse Flowers for Algernon moment for Liz. One where her post alien mist intelligence is less than her original intelligence because her actions should have consequences. It won’t happen. Everyone will forgive her in three minutes or less. Besides, we all know the Roswell, New Mexico writers don’t make the straight kids suffer consequences.

While playing God, they Dr. Frankenstein a frog. Alas, the frog lives for a little while, but at some point starts bleeding from its head and dies again. That’s all it takes for Liz to pump the breaks on scientific resurrection, deciding instead to focus on curing all known and unknown diseases using the alien pod goo. Shivani is none to pleased by Liz’s sudden change of direction and puts on her menace face.

Much later, when we were all wondering if a second bottle of wine was advisable, Liz crossed all the lines by digging into Rosa. Nobody messes with Rosa. Well, I messed with Rosa last week when she messed with Michael, but that was about Alex, and I have made no secret about being here for Alex. If Rosa had kicked Liz in the back when she turned to leave, I would have stood and cheered. I also would have spent less of the episode focused on what type of underwear I should don for my full body scrub and wrap. This has been an energy vampire of a season.

More Stuff I Didn’t Care About: Pocket Dimensions, Liminal Spaces, and Bad Wigs

Here’s where the writers decided to try to sound smart and failed. There were so many words spoken during the Dallas/Bonnie and Rosa/Maria scenes. So many words strung together in the most boring and nonsensical of ways.

I do not care when Bonnie cries. I do not care when Tezca cries. I do not, cannot, will not care about Bonnie and Tezca’s tears. You’ve wasted time telling viewers their backstories, Chris. Whatever. Bonnie cries because she’s a taker. Yes, Bonnie, you are. You are taking time away from the characters that matter. You are also taking the remaining pieces of my soul. In a not at all surprising or profound moment, baby Bonnie decides that she is more than a taker.

Tezca cries because she was a brainwashed murderer being haunted by her victims in zombie form. Tezca decides she’s more than a murderer and is going to help the children of those she betrayed. Good for you, Tezca. How about you start with telling everyone where Alex is and how to get him back without wasting more of our time.

Here’s the down low on the pocket dimension. Theo built it. It looks like he built it to hide pieces of the console. I feel now is the time to mention that season one established Michael’s dedication to scouring Foster’s Ranch and the area surrounding for pieces of alien glass. Those pieces eventually formed the partial console we’ve all been wondering about for four seasons.

The rest of Dallas and Bonnie’s time in the pocket dimension involved a scavenger hunt left behind by Theo. There were words said and floating music notes, but I don’t think they actually mattered. The outcome was the discovery of another metal box with the final pieces of Michael’s console. I won’t at all suggest that the completion of the console was exactly what Clyde wanted these resident geniuses to accomplish. I also won’t suggest that Michal literally could have jumped into the alien sand pocket four episodes ago thereby avoiding giving Clyde and those loyal to the cult of Ophiuchus what they want. It clearly is easy to navigate the pocket dimension since Dallas left the cave system and found his way into Other Roswell with nary a scratch. Bonnie even found snacks.

Did Theo, Norah, and Louise know that Michael would find the pieces that they didn’t hide? The ones scattered throughout the desert? I doubt it. I think it’s more likely that the writers and showrunner want you to forget that Michael happened upon those pieces after years of searching. I think they’d also like you to forget that Michael’s searching was likely driven by the abuse he suffered and his being left behind at the orphanage while Max and Isobel were adopted. Both of these pivotal events solidified for Michael that he didn’t belong. Of course, you can totally go with the idea that Michael found the console pieces because it was preordained, as was the eventual unearthing of two metal boxes that he wasn’t looking for and didn’t know existed. The sloppy writing is so unprofessional.

Remember how Bonnie pointed a flare gun at Dallas in the pocket dimension? Let me set the scene, after yelling Dallas’ name into the uninhabited vastness, she pointed a flare gun at him. I have to love that even in the pocket dimension a Black man walking is perceived as a threat. A little racism in the pocket dimension is so on brand for a show that cares little about optics. It’s not at all like Bonnie's a telekinetic alien that could have knocked the perceived "threat" off his feet.

An Aside: The Morse code situation. I for one did not learn Morse code at any summer camp or at Outdoor Education, which took place during the school year and involved getting stuck in bogs with angry beavers and trapped beneath overturned canoes. Apparently, Roswell's got the world beat when it comes to Morse code aficionados.

Isobel and her new bestie, Tezca, fought mindscape Jones, played by Max in a bad wig. They killed him again and again. It’s desensitizing therapy. Sounds good. It seems to be working until a zombie hoard of Tezca’s victims come to torment here. I only saw the kids at first and thought this was some type of Lost Boys Peter Pan situation, but then some bigger people arrived. Tezca runs away because she’s irredeemable, but then she isn’t, so everything is okay.

Another Aside: For some reason, Isobel only remembers three of the people Noah killed. It was 14 when Cameron, Kyle, and Alex were in the bunker during season one. He then killed Mr. Green, the radio guy, and racist Hank, so it’s at least 16. I guess the others don’t matter in season 4. This concludes my aside.

While Isobel is trying to Gandalf Tezca, Rosa is trying to Yoda Maria in a desperate attempt to give them all something to do. Maria “Sorcerer Supreme” DeLuca goes to her Roswell defined liminal space, which involves getting on all fours to touch the ground and banging a metal sculpture, that no one else has ever found in Roswell, to reveal the opening to the pocket dimension. I love that the writers tried to pretend like the term doesn’t have an actual definition. Once again, whatever.

One More Thing

I miss when Jesse Manes was the bad guy.

One more boring, do nothing episode down.

1. I hated this episode of Roswell, New Mexico.
2. I drank an entire bottle of wine on my second viewing of this episode.
3. As a showrunner, ally, and accomplice, Chris Hollier is dedicated to uplifting queer relationships.

Can you spot the lie? It’s number three. Number three is the lie. To make number three a truth, you would need to substitute queer relationships with heteronormativity and delete ally and accomplice from the sentence. I am so tired of people thinking that all you have to do is say a thing to get credit. Incorrect. You have to do the thing. Show the thing. Prove the thing.

I don’t have a lot to say about the actual plot of this episode. It just added another conflict to the the muddled list of this season’s unresolved conflicts. Quite frankly, the episode was self-indulgent verging on masturbatory. Shining yet another light on Max and Liz’s relationship woes, as well as Liz’s ego. So let’s start with an overview.

Here we go.

Synopsis

Bad Girl Liz and her sidekick Clyde want Irksome Liz to indulge her megalomaniacal tendencies by embracing the mist and becoming more genius-ier. Meanwhile, Max is impulsive and gets trapped in Liz’s Wild West mindscape, but Isobel gets kicked out. Doctor-in-Training Heath joins the Crisis Liz Team. Michael tries to go rescue Alex, but Rosa has joined the let’s guilt trip Michael club, so he doesn’t. In the end, Irksome Liz gives up the driver’s seat to Bad Girl Liz and Michael and Maria have a fireside chat about thinking thoughts about possibly maybe the next day thinking about maybe rescuing some people from a glory hole. Oh, and the show wasted the appearance of OG Liz, Shiri Appleby.

Word Problems

Honestly, how many people does it take to save Liz? Turns out the answer is six. One to conduct lab tests, one to get trapped in a mindsape, one to act as a nurse between songs, two to stand around, and one to not look for his boyfriend or Dallas or Bonnie because the rest of the group told him to stop being impulsive.

How many days does it take to die of dehydration in an alien sand pit masquerading as another dimension? As little as three. Who knows maybe there is a grocery store in the other dimension. Alex was probably house hunting in the alien sand pit this episode because he realizes his “friends” are all horrible people. That likely explains why he didn’t communicate with anyone in this episode. Doesn't really matter since they also were in no way worried about his lack of communication.

No continuity. The writing is so sloppy.

When It Doesn’t Make Sense

Let’s see how sloppy this show can be in the space of a single episode. It is established that Heath is going to NYU Grossman School of Medicine and Rosa is going to Parsons School of Design, which is part of The New School, so they both reside in New York City. I too lived there for two years. While I did not befriend these two, they did befriend one another.

They then have the following conversation at Deep Sky, which apparently all of them can now access without Alex or Kyle, the only two members of this Titanic of a friend group that actually work there:

Heath: So, how long has Dallas been missing?
Rosa: No more than a day. Listen, I’m sorry that I didn’t tell you over the phone. I just thought that you should hear it in person.
Heath: You know, I almost didn’t go back to med school. I didn’t want to leave Dallas . . .

Rosa then has this conversation with Michael:

Rosa: Hey.
Michael: Look, Bikini Kill. Liz, she’s got her boyfriend. You’ve got your boyfriend. I’m-a go get my boyfriend.
Rosa: Heath is not my boyfriend, okay? People hug when they’re sad.
Michael: You stepped outside to make a call and 30 minutes later, Heath swooped in. So either Dr. Feelgood came to town with you, or . . . Did you develop beam-me-up powers?
Rosa: Or Heath came yesterday. After you told me about Dallas . . .

These two interactions are important. Michael’s first and second line were the best of the episode, granted the episode overall was indulgent and uninspired, but Michael Vlamis always manages to make magic in the middle of mediocrity. That was the good now on to the mess.

Is the audience to assume that Rosa convinced Heath to dip out on medical school by saying that she had something to tell him about Dallas but couldn’t tell him over the phone, so he had to fly across the country to hear it? Fine, let’s say the audience accepts that scenario. Are they then to assume that once Rosa told Heath that Dallas was missing, he just holed up in his hotel room for the night and didn’t attempt to connect with the group? Fine, let’s say that after finding out that Dallas was missing, Heath decided to hole up in his hotel room acting out the lyrics to “I Touch Myself” by Divinyls while thinking of Dallas, waiting for Rosa to call with details of the nonexistent search effort. When he finally hears from Rosa, it isn’t about Dallas, his number one, but Liz, so he leaves his hotel to play doctor. Save a few minor details, this is the only scenario that fits with the dialogue.

Even Michael is confused about when and why Heath is in Roswell. A more realistic version of this situation: Rosa calls Heath with concerning news about Dallas. Heath demands to know the news over the phone. Heath now knowing the news flies to Roswell, confronts the alien squad, and searches for Dallas all night long. When Rosa calls him for help, Heath’s phone goes to voicemail because he threw himself into the alien sand pit to find Dallas aka his reason for living.

That didn’t happen because it’s all hands on deck for Liz, but too bad so sad for the three people trapped in another dimension. I guess the needs of the many versus the needs of the Liz only exists on Star Trek. Look, Heath is harmless. And in theory, I have no issues with him returning, but I do question the necessity of it all for many reasons. The first reason being, we know Deep Sky has doctors.

You know what else? What nonsense was Rosa spewing? What does setting a car on fire at 17, with two other people, have to do with finding Alex? Also, Rosa, my baby, you were already dead when the car was set on fire. It isn't like Michael killed you. I’m disappointed that Rosa has boarded the don’t be impulsive train. I could give her a pass because Liz is her sister, but I’m not feeling magnanimous today. Everyone just watched a powerless Max insist upon jumping into a mindscape, but jumping into an alien sand pit is insane. Got it. I do wonder why Max is allowed to do whatever to save his woman when Michael isn’t allowed to do whatever to save his man. There’s an itch at the back of my brain. Give me a minute.

There may have been a time when I would have attributed this glaring lack of equity between the two main couples a mere oversight or bad writing. That's a lie. There was never a time I attributed this to oversight. The intentionality of the disaprity between the couples is so repugnant. Poorly written equitable trteatment would make people cringe, but at least it wouldn't feel like Michael and Alex's entire relationship existed to score progressive points and internet mentions.

Riddle Me This

Why is Max allowed to be impulsive without guilt or shame while Michael is guilted and shamed into compliance when he tries to save his cosmic love? This show, from season one, has indulged Max in his tantrums, bullying, verbal abuse, physical abuse, impulsivity, bossiness, rage issues, and violence only to label him the savior and give him a messiah moment in season one while also undermining, disappearing, torturing, and traumatizing the two queer survivors of abuse at every turn. And do not attempt to usher in the argument that Max died. Yep, he did. Then he arose and went horseback riding with his girlfriend.

How is Shivani, a person that was vaping the alien mist prior to Liz’s arrival at the lab and also in the room with the broken bottle of alien mist, back at work while Liz is convulsing on a table, fighting her Bad Girl self in a mindscape? If a cure or treatment exists, it makes sense that they would also use it on Liz. The logic here just doesn’t hold. I guess Liz is the ring and Max is Gollum. Also, are we to surmise that Liz’s mindscape was contingent upon Max demanding to join Isobel? Would this entire stupid episode not have occurred if Isobel simply told Max Evans no? This has to be true since Bad Girl Liz’s entire plan was to kidnap and threaten Max to get what she wanted from Irksome Liz. Speaking of Irksome Liz, no one watching the episode believed that she shot the Bad Girl version of herself. Liz’s ego is the second biggest thing on the show after Max’s entitlement issues.

By the by, was anyone else squinty eyed when Liz seemed giddy about the possibility of her once upon a time sex friend/salsa partner and formerly dead sister hooking up?

When the Mindscape Pony is Open More than the Real One

How does Michael end this episode? Well, Michael and Maria sit around the fire pit for a chat. Let me award zero points to the writers for having this take place at Michael’s former home. From what I gather, the purpose of the chat was to prop up Maria as the only person that kept their cool during Crisis Liz. Apparently, Maria decided that it simply wasn’t her turn to have a meltdown. Give me a break.

Also, Michael, you get to be emotional about your missing boyfriend. Stop letting your horrible group of friends crawl inside your head to convince you otherwise. Stop letting them use the trauma of your past, as a survivor of abuse, to make you feel horrible about wanting to spring into action. You love him and he is missing. The real question is why are all of you sitting cozy around fires and on sofas instead of searching for a way to bring back Alex, Dallas, and Bonnie. Just because Alex isn’t dead doesn’t mean he isn’t dying.

And why are we referencing the need to find them? They are in the hole. They are in the hole that Alex showed you. They are literally not lost. They are in the hole. You don’t even have to dig. Also, why haven’t we asked the alien in captivity, Tezca, about the hole and how to retrieve items that are trapped down there? Is her friend time with Isobel really necessary?

And So It Goes

How much do we love Roswell, New Mexico, a show with four episodes remaining, adding to the unresolved conflicts? How much do we love a show with four episodes remaining dedicating 43 minutes to telling the audience what they already know — Max is an albatross, Liz wants the glory at any cost, and their relationship is toxic.

And I’ll say again, the turquoise was never their thing.

This show has a pacing problem, a plot before character problem, a coherent story telling problem, and a worldbuilding problem. It also has a respect problem. In that, it doesn’t respect its audience. I want to be disappointed but that would require having expectations.

This was an absolutely worthless episode.
I don’t know what the main storyline is this season, and I teach this plot and story and character stuff. Honestly, I don’t think the writers know what the main storyline is this season. Bigger than that, I don’t think they’re doing what they think they’re doing.

Another thing, my attitude toward this show has reached a low. I’m just here for Alex. And sometimes Michael.

Let’s do this.

Really

Clyde collects a bunch of alien stuff and commits a bit of arson over a jaunty boot-stomping number. It allegedly involves getting back to Oasis, or so the plot thus far has led you to believe. Alas, he still needs Liz Ortecho, which Jones either discovered last season or knew back in 1947 before she was born. The other alternative is the writers just wrote that the alien Alighting needs human Liz for because and that’s why. Choose your own adventure, folks.

Later, we discover that Clyde also stole, crashed, and vandalized Dallas’ car with the alien symbol. This whole thing must be his idea of fun. It’s my idea of an unnecessary scene.

Even later, he gets weird with Liz’s student at the Crashdown. Is there a kidnapping in our future? Maybe? Who knows.

Seriously

Maria starts to hold a seance for Alex because she assumes he’s dead. Spoiler alert: he’s not. In walks Liz to convince Maria that not only isn’t Alex dead, but they’ll find him even though they’re barely trying.

Look, here’s Rosa, all the way from New York, to echolocate Alex using a strand of his hair. Shockingly, this plan doesn’t work. Alex doesn’t reach out to Maria and Rosa, but I bet he’s judging them from the alien sand pit. I’m judging them from the sofa wearing one crew length Ernie sock, one knee high Big Bird sock, a Biceratops Pride t-shirt, and blue terry cloth shorts, drinking Caprisun out of a Yeti and eating Annie’s fruit snacks for lunch, so if I can judge, the “pretty fella” definitely can.

There’s a part of me that believes Maria has been keeping strands of Alex’s hair in a lockbox since middle school after she watched Twitches at a sleepover because she’s in love with him. Let’s call it canon.

Also canon, the writers have never known what to do with Maria, so they keep shoving her into storylines. First she’s here then she’s there and then there and there and there. They should have made her the villain. The writers really missed that opportunity during the season she wore ostrich feathers and Abominable Snowman fur. She was like a Cruella in training. And if we’re being honest, in many ways, and to some people, she already is the villain in this story.

Once the connection between Mimi and Theo’s alien dragonfruit tree was revealed, playing detective with Dallas was her story. She doesn’t belong in Michael and Alex’s. Her presence in their relationship is one of the reasons it’s so easy to hate watch this show.
Do Better

Maria is in the desert with Rosa, shoeless, to contact Alex. She gets a sign. I missed whether or not the insect flew, so it might be a grasshopper masquerading as a locust, which Alex was studying. I love that the genius level code breaker and hacker is collecting weather balloons and studying alien related weather phenomena and insects for a not so secret pseudo government think tank.

Uh oh, Michael overhears that Alex is missing and realizes that his “friends” have, once again, decided to infantilize him.

A bunch of hours later, Maria walks on the floor of The Pony without shoes, which lets Alex communicate with Michael. First Alex flashes some lights, but then he plays “Would You Come Home” on the piano and Michael joins him on the guitar. It’s a duet designed to feed #malex fans, but I question if it’s really enough. Maybe it is, but I doubt it. It came too late to garner the desired impact. It takes more than a ghostly duet to quell justified frustration over a season that has sidelined Alex.

And I'm not talking physically, actor availability is a reality many shows have faced. I'm talking about keeping Alex at the center of Michael's heart and arc. Let Michael sit down and have a conversation about missing Alex. Give the audience that onesided voicemail that Michael leaves for Alex; one that's about them and not centered on another character. Have Michael sit down at the end of a long day and let him ramble to Alex's voicemail, a smile on his face and a whispered I miss you, I love you at the end. And above all, let him be the one to realize that Alex is flipping missing.

And I dare say, using Maria as the tunnel between Michael and Alex is a big do not want for many of those fans. Again, I’m not saying anything the writers and showrunner don’t know. The fact that they didn't give Michael those emotional beats and spread Maria throughout Michael and Alex's storyline is a choice. A deliberate dickish choice but a choice.

A Man Without a Plan

Have you ever been in a situation where people come up with ideas and that one person keeps shooting them down without offering any alternatives? That’s Max. I think Michael’s plan was to go into the alien sand pit and look for Alex. That plan isn’t good enough for Max, but he doesn’t offer up a plan of his own.

I think my plan would have been to punch Max until he started to bleed, tie the rope around his ankle and his Jeep, throw him in the hole, jump in after him, use his blood to mark my path, find Alex, and have someone backup the Jeep to pull the three of us out of the hole. A lot of words but not complicated.

All of that is to say, Alex is still in the hole. Viewers still haven’t seen him. And unless his cool jacket had secret pockets filled with water, he’ll be dead before next week’s episode because that’s how real science works.

Remember When

I used to love Liz Ortecho, but it’s been a while. Summing up her episode: She stopped Maria’s stupid seance then left. She convinced Max to lie to Michael then left. She showed Shivani the pods then they left. She cured Michael then left. She found Shivani high on alien cells. She failed to realize that duh Shivani was going to drop the bottle and gas them both. It’s exhausting. The one time she needed to leave she didn’t leave. I’m no longer comfortable with the show referring to Liz as a genius.

As soon as someone tells you they’ve been vaping alien cells, which has given them an advanced understanding of biochemistry, you should hit them with something, tie them to a chair, and exit the situation. As soon as someone tries to peer pressure you into vaping alien cells, you should exit the situation. As soon as you see that someone has their dead child in cryostasis, you should exit the situation. There were so many times during Liz’s situation with Shivani that she should have backed out of the room. Liz makes bad decisions. Constantly. Always.

I don’t understand how she isn’t tired of herself at this point.

Let’s Talk About Anger

Michael Guerin going off on this group of clowns was my most favoritest part of this entire episode. It was a feast. All the kudos to Michael Vlamis for making me sit up and care. Sadly, the writers ruined it with what followed.

Anger is a justified and acceptable feeling. Period. You are allowed to be angry. Don’t ever let someone tell you how you should feel about what happened to you or how they’ve treated you.

Is it okay to punch people when you’re angry? The societal answer is typically no. Society says that violence is never the answer. However, if it is the alien Max Evans of Roswell, New Mexico then the answer is yes. Max should be punched in the face far more often than he has been. Feel free to disagree.

I say all of this to say that Michael Guerin was justified in his anger. And so what if he let some truth bombs slap people in the face, letting truth bombs fly when you’re angry is one way to process your feelings. Also, Michael lives with and is in a committed loving relationship with Alex, so why would friends keep serious information about Alex from him. Did he scorch the earth the last time Alex went missing? Yes, he did. What were the rest of them doing? They were huddled together at The Pony hoping and wishing while Michael got his hands dirty. We’ll ignore the part where the writers had Michael leave Alex chained up so he could ride the Ferris Wheel with Maria.

And why is Michael’s level of scorched earth unacceptable. This group of “friends” couldn’t cobble together a moral compass between them. Violate trust, bodies, and scientific ethics? They got you. Use violence to interrogate a suspect? They’re down. Lie, steal, gaslight? They consider that game night.

And the worst part of all — Michael apologizing to the people who wronged him. Talk about a cycle of abuse. In addition to being occasionally stupid, this show is occasionally gross. I would say do better, but they won’t get a chance, so instead I’ll say go take a seat and think about what you’ve done.

Elsewhere

Liz and Max continue to have relationship talks, woes, and reconciliations. My sense is that people are over this aspect of season four.

We discover that Tezca was brainwashed by Jones. She was once on the side of Nora and Louise, but then Jones somehow manipulated her into believing she supported Ophiuchus. Tezca is gobsmacked by this revelation. Sadly, this leaves mustache twirling Clyde as the villain option.

Rosa tells Maria that her new alien power is seeing between dimensions. Let’s all collectively recall that Maria doesn’t have any alien DNA and never spent a decade soaking up alien pod juices. Then let’s all remember that I cannot with this stupidity. Here’s my analysis: In the Roswell, New Mexico writers room, there is no bottom when it comes to stupid ideas or desperation over making Maria plot essential. She has been wasted as a character since the first episode and every attempt to correct that fact as been a terrible idea. How low can we go must be their mirror mantra.

Confessions and Noticings

The actress playing Tezca (Paloma Guzmán) was on a season two episode of Person of Interest (POI), “Masquerade.” The song played at the end of this episode was a cover of “Hurt” by Nine Inch Nails. Johnny Cash’s most excellent cover of “Hurt” was used in what was the best ever episode of POI, “The Devil’s Share.”

I would have quit reviewing this episode and maybe the show if Maria had fallen into that alien quicksand hole and met up with Alex. Quit. Without hesitation. I was shouting don’t you freaking dare at the television. I was not saying freaking.

Is anyone wondering what alien once resided in the broken pod Shivani has been hiding? Is it Noah’s?

I’ll be traveling next Monday and the Monday after that, but once I figure out time zones, I’ll do my best to still post the reviews on Tuesday.I’ll be traveling next Monday and the Monday after that, but once I figure out time zones, I’ll do my best to still post the reviews on Tuesday.
