Welcome to round 4. A big thanks to Rn for our 2019CC poster! It looks fantastic!

What started as 64 characters is now done to 8. Like last year, round 3 knocked out most of the female competitors with Villanelle, Kate Beckett, Fallon Carrington, The Doctor, Jessica Jones, Arya Stark, Sara Lance, and Clarke Griffin all leaving the contest. Again, several polls went down to the wire with 3 shows each separated by 1%. Here’s hoping that today’s polls are as exciting. In our prediction contest, Luana still holds the lead with 39 correct predictions. Way to go! If you are just joining us, the rules can be found in the links below. Please respect the one vote per person per poll rule.

In exciting news, our mini-contest begins today. Woo hoo! If you no longer have a character in the contest, hopefully one of your one-season favorites is competing. The rules work just the same as the regular Cup. Two shows will go head-to-head in the polls for around 24 hours. The one with the most votes proceeds to the next round. One vote per person per poll. Happy voting!
TV Talk Topic: One Hit Wonders

In round 4, the TV Talk Topic is always connected to the mini-contest, so what are your favorite one-season shows and why? Do you like series where the show is designed to only have one season? What makes some one-season shows stick in the public’s memory longer than shows with more seasons? (Thanks Amber for the mini-contest suggestion that inspired this topic.)

While a number of broadcast series at all five networks already have secured early renewals a month before the upfronts, there are quite a few that are yet to hear, some of them heavily on the bubble. Here is rundown of the broadcast scripted series whose fate beyond this season has not been unveiled yet, along with my assessment of their chances. You can stay up to date with the status of the current TV series with Deadline’s Series Renewal Status Scorecard.

On the drama side, freshman drama Designated Survivor, a strong delayed viewing and international performer (ABS Studios co-produces with indie Mark Gordon Co.) is certain to come back, in anticipation of a renewal the series is in the process of hiring a new showrunner. Things also look promising for veteran Once Upon a Time, contingent on closing deals with four cast members identified to lead a planned reimagining of the series, Jennifer Morrison, Lana Parrilla, Robert Carlyle and Colin O’Donoghue. I hear the show is meeting with writers as two of its key producers, Andrew Chambliss and Ian Goldberg, left to become co-showrunners on Fear the Walking Dead. Even Quantico, which has been struggling this season after a solid first year, appears likely to continue as it makes money for ABC Studios via international and SVOD (Netflix) deals. (It also features a global star in Priyanka Chopra.) Ditto for Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D., which serves as a marketing platform for the Disney-owned Marvel. The Catch survived a low-rated first season to clinch a second-season renewal as part of TGIT. A creative reboot heading into Season 2 did not lead to a ratings boost as The Catch continues to lag far behind TGIT’s Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal and HTGAWM, with its ratings also below two new fall ABC dramas that are not expected to come back, Notorious and Conviction. While a third season of The Catch appears a long shot, there is internal support for the series, which has appealing leads in Peter Krause and Mireille Enos, a big producer behind it, Shondaland, and potential international play for ABC Studios. ABC’s prestige drama American Crime is heavily on the bubble with low ratings offset by a strong critical acclaim, leaving ABC to weigh in the two and make a renewal decision. Not expected to be in the running for a third season is anthology crime drama Secrets & Lies, with swiftly pulled midseason drama Time After Time also gone.
Mike and Blip are at odds with each other because of Mike’s almost-trade. Blip then takes out those frustrations on Evelyn. Meanwhile, she has figured out that Will has stolen money from the restaurant to pay off people from his past. Amelia informs Ginny of this who confronts her brother. Ginny later fires Amelia. At the end of the episode, Ginny doesn’t quit when Oscar tells her to end injures herself.

Favorite moment: I loved how superstitious everyone was when it came to Ginny pitching a no-hitter. I expected as much from the players but I loved that even the family and friends got in on it. And Al was just laughing his ass off in the background. There haven’t been many scenes like this during the season but I’m glad we still got one before the (hopefully not permanent) end.

Biggest idiot: I’ve said it in a previous review. They better not mess up the best relationship on this show for the sake of drama. Blip was frustrated with Mike because he felt like Mike didn’t care enough about the team or their friendship. But taking those frustrations out on his wife was about the dumbest thing he could’ve done. What the hell was he talking about that he wanted things to be about him for a change? The last 9 years of Evelyn’s life have been about nothing but him and the kids. Now she finally wants to do something for herself and this is the moment he chooses to throw a fit! Unbelievable. If there’s a season two, the first words out of his mouth better be “I’m sorry”.

It was almost great: When Amelia informed Ginny about what was going on with the restaurant, I expected this storyline to go in the cliché direction. On another show, Ginny would’ve confronted her brother. He would’ve denied it and she would’ve believed him. Except, in this case, Ginny knows her brother well enough to know when he’s lying to her. I’m glad she didn’t believe his lies. And I think she handled the situation well. She pulled back from the restaurant and told him to get his act together. When he does, she’ll support him. I just wish she hadn’t done that next part.

Second biggest idiot: What was with everyone making stupid decisions this week? When Ginny was firing Amelia, I just kept thinking “You’re going to regret this.”. Playing sports at that level, you need an agent. She doesn’t want to be worrying about all kinds of deals when she’s playing. It’ll take away from her training. She needs to be able to focus solely on the sport, and for that, she needs an agent who handles all of the other stuff. I get that Amelia was pissed. She’s done a lot for Ginny, most recently the sponsor-debacle. She tried to look out for her where her brother was concerned. This is the thanks she gets. It’s going to be interesting to see what Ginny will do with her injury now that she’s on her own.

The elephant in the room: So, I can’t avoid talking about it. It’s very likely that this will be the last review of Pitch I ever write. The ratings haven’t been great and the show is definitely in the cancellation zone. The fact that it only has 10 episodes doesn’t worry me that much. This season was never meant to be longer, in fact, it was supposed to air midseason rather than in the fall. However, the ratings might prove fatal. Personally, I hope that this is not the case. And not just because this episode would make a terrible series finale with all of these unfinished storylines. This show has pushed forward so many issues that other shows usually shy away from, and all of this in just 10 episodes. We need a show like this on the air right now. Though, it could do with better promotion (I’m looking at you, Fox).

Best quotes: Eliot: “Amelia, where are you? Ginny’s pitching a …” Evelyn: “Don’t say it!” Eliot: “… A very nice game.”
Rachel: “Just because you’re not moving, doesn’t mean we can’t see you.”
Ginny: “I don’t need a man to rescue me.”

So that’s it for this season of Pitch. Let me know in the comments what you thought of the season finale.
Ratings Breakdown:
It was an easy Thursday overnight victory for NBC care of the 21 to 13 victory for the Kansas City Chiefs over the Oakland Raiders on NFL Football at an estimated 9.1 rating/15 share in households. Combined with live coverage on the NFLN and the household rating for the match-up increased to an 11.8 from 8:30-11:45 p.m. ET. As a reminder, results for any live sporting event are always approximate.

In the specials department was Fox’s holiday-themed “Taraji’s White Hot Christmas,” headlined by “Empire” star Taraji B. Henson, at a not-so-hot 2.6/ 4 (#3) at 8 p.m. That led into a modest 2.2/ 4 (#4) for the season (or series) finale of freshman drama “Pitch” at 9 p.m.

In series-finale news, ABC drama “Notorious” earned its cancellation stripes at a 1.9/ 3 in the household overnights at 10 p.m., which trailed CBS’ soon-to-conclude “Pure Genius” (#2: 3.6/ 6) by a hefty 47 percent.

Earlier in the evening on ABC were encore telecasts of animated holiday specials “Toy Story That Time Forgot” (#4: 2.5/ 4) and “Shrek the Halls” (#4: 2.3/ 4) from 8-9 p.m., followed by “The Great American Baking Show” at a 2.7/ 4 at 9 p.m. CBS populated the 8-10 p.m. block with a repeat of “The Big Bang Theory” at a second-place 6.1/10 in the 8 p.m. half-hour, followed by original telecasts of “The Great Indoors” (#2: 4.7/ 7), “Mom” (#2: 5.1/ 8) and “Life in Pieces” (#2: 4.2/ 7) from 8:30-10 p.m. Unfortunately, CBS has never been able to capitalize on the lead-out spot out of “The Big Bang Theory.”

The CW capped off the evening with the pairing of “D.C. Legends of Tomorrow” (#5: 1.5/ 3) and “Supernatural” (#5: 1.1/ 2) from 8-10 p.m. at typical overnight levels. “Supernatural” moves to Thursdays at 8 p.m. into upcoming drama “Riverdale” effective on Thursday, Jan. 26. And “D.C.’s Legends of Tomorrow” will move to Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET (out of “The Flash”) beginning on Jan. 24.

With Pitch’s future hanging in the balance, star Kylie Bunbury says filming the show’s season finale was especially difficult. “I have to be honest, it’s really hard,” Bunbury tells EW. “We’ve really become a family. I know that a lot of people say that, but it’s really special what we’ve created together, in terms of the cast, crew, writers, and producers. I did a lot of crying; I cried a lot. I’m getting emotional right now thinking about it.”

“I think that everyone’s stories on the show aren’t over yet,” Bunbury continues. “We want to see more. You can see that with the fans; the fans love this show. If anyone gives this show a chance, they love it as well. I don’t know anyone who doesn’t love this show. I know there’s some logistics in terms of Fox deciding what they’re going to do with the show, but I think what they need to listen to is more their heart rather than the logistics because ‘.”
KEVIN FALLS: Not really, because we felt so good about the show. We knew we were writing to that end line. From the beginning of the season, that’s where we knew we were going to end up. We talked briefly — there was one brief discussion about whether to come up with an alternate ending. We didn’t feel that throwing a no-hitter was really ever going to be something that we were going to have her do — do something magical. But we could’ve maybe ended where she got the runner out or we could have ended with some version of a different ender that’s more upbeat, but then we started thinking, Why are we trying to help the decision to end the show by wrapping the series in a way that satisfies everybody? We feel like we’re a great show that we feel deserves a second season. Not to mention that in this era of repeat viewing, word of mouth, people can go back and binge it and then they want it. So the feeling was that we just wanted to have a cliffhanger, because we want a second season and we always thought that we’re going to get one and we’re still confident that we will.

Would you be satisfied if this had to serve as a series finale?

No. There was a point where we talked about shooting the finale two ways where we had something that would have been a satisfying series finale. But I don't want to make someone's [renewal or cancellation] decision easier for them. This injury could have happened to any other rookie in the same situation. But for Ginny, it's harder. We did the idea of her being the first female player in MLB. That's still part of her but she's no longer a rookie [in season two]. She goes into next season as someone who has to win her job back with obstacles there and you know she'll rise to the occasion. We're not going to make it easy for her, but she's going to do it. My message is that you'll love it that much more going in because of what she has to come back from [with the injury]. But as a series finale? We wouldn't design it that way. I did a show called Journeyman and I knew when it was on that it wasn't going to come back and it was easier to do it that way. With Pitch, people were saying all the right things that we were going to come back and I still feel that. We're bullish and positive and feel like whether we get a second season, let's put our character in a position where she has to fight back and you'll love her that much more.

Was there a storyline that you didn't get to do this season?

We were at one point and still want to do and will do, if allowed, is to introduce a gay player. We ran that by MLB and that was the quickest approval we got on any storyline. MLB has a department of inclusion. I love that because it's like they built a landing pad for a spaceship that's coming and they're ready for it. And they're going to welcome it when it happens. That's the kind of partner they are.

If Fox passes on a second season, is there a chance the show could continue on? You mentioned Hulu but co-producer MLB has MLB Network and a desire to continue (and expand) in scripted. Could a second season air there? Or repeat the first season on MLB Network during the off-season in a bid to broaden the audience?

I think that's a good question; we talked about that. Like when Friday Night Lights got a new deal with DirecTV and then aired on NBC. There have been some conversations about that, too. There are people who don't follow baseball who watched the show who now follow baseball. This is an hour drama that aired to 5 million people that was basically an advertisement for baseball and I don't know if you would want to revisit it considering that you could produce the show for about half as much as a free agent closer! I'd love to see it on MLB Network. That's certainly a conversation. If they suddenly had to pay for it, would they change anything creatively? That's a concern but that's a conversation you have before you close a deal with them.
Al confronts Oscar about his relationship with his daughter, who announces that she’s leaving. Evelyn starts to grow concerned about her investment in Will’s restaurant after checking the finances. Mike says goodbye to his fans, but then gets offered the chance to stay. However, this is after he and Ginny nearly kiss.

Favorite moment: I really liked seeing Oscar and Al bond over Natalie leaving and pissing off Charlie. These two need to be on the same side, they work so much better as a team. I’m still not quite sold on Oscar but Al has really grown on me. I always enjoy his scenes. I wish we’d seen a bit more of his relationship with his daughter. Last week I hadn’t been paying close attention and didn’t even realize that she was his daughter and now she’s already gone again.

Least favorite plot direction: It always bothers me when something is hyped all the way through the episode and then suddenly just doesn’t happen. All week the big new was Mike leaving the team. We saw everyone come to terms with it (including Mike), we saw him say goodbye to the fans … and then it doesn’t happen. Now I get that this was probably to create new tension between him and Ginny (more on that later) but it felt kind of anticlimactic. And I feel like it somehow cheapens his actual goodbye that will one day follow. So my point is if you’re going to center an entire episode around something, at least follow through with it.

The elephant in the room: I dreaded getting started on this review because I knew I would not be able to avoid talking about Ginny and Mike. So here’s my point of view. If you’re a die-hard Bawson shipper, this is when you look away. Personally, I don’t ship it. I’m a big supporter of Ginny’s rule not to date another player because we all know that the almost kiss is going to cause issues. If it absolutely had to happen, I wish they hadn’t gone through with it this soon. Regardless of how long this show will last, it’s really early to put two main characters together. Either it works and they’re happy for a while until the writers inevitably throw obstacles at them that ends up ruining everything (has happened with most of my long-term ships) or it doesn’t and becomes so awkward that one of them leaves the show or something. I figured there would be a lot of “will they, won’t they?”. Apparently, the writers had other plans.

Trouble ahead: So we knew from the start that Will’s not great when it comes to finances. It seems that now Evelyn is starting to realize that too. My question is, how much money has she already put in. For her sake, I hope it’s not too late to back out. It seems that Ginny is also realizing that she may have moved to quickly in supporting her brother. There’s a reason the writers had Noah mention that restaurants are a bad investment. I’m guessing that this is a storyline the writers hope to pull through to next season (if there is one).

Most concerning: Wow, Ginny is terrible at making excuses. Her explanation of why she walked out on a date to see Mike was terrible. Hasn’t Amelia trained her on this? What the hell is she going to do when interviewers ask questions she doesn’t want to answer? Unless she was bad on purpose. In which case, never mind.

Favorite guest star: Chris Keller! I’ve missed seeing Tyler Hilton. I really liked his character. I kept expecting him to do something wrong to explain why she’d leave and go see Mike instead but he was a perfect gentleman. Oh well, her loss.

Best quotes: Blip: “Ginny, you need to get some.”
Amelia: “Don’t hug me.” Mike: “I wasn’t gonna.”
Oscar: “Is this your way saying, don’t trade mike?” Al: “No, this is my way of saying don’t trade Mike. Don’t trade Mike!”

That’s it for this week. Check in again next week for an all-new review and let me know in the comments what you thought of this week’s episode.

NFL Football (NBC), “The Big Bang Theory” (CBS)
-Losers:
“The Great Indoors” (CBS), “Rosewood” (Fox), “The Great American Baking Show” (ABC), “Pitch” (Fox), “Pure Genius” (CBS)

Ratings Breakdown:
It was a touchdown in the household overnights for NBC, with the Dallas Cowboys victory over the Minnesota Vikings at an estimated 11.0 rating/18 share from 8:30-11:30 p.m. ET. Comparatively, this was an improvement (in household rating) of 62 percent from the Saints-Panthers match-up on Nov. 17 (6.8).

“The Big Bang Theory” on CBS, of course, stood well above any other entertainment-themed series for the night with a 9.5/15 at 8 p.m. But freshman lead-out “The Great Indoors” slipped to a 4.5/ 7, which is loss of a severe 53 percent. Once again, CBS has not put this protected time period to the appropriate use. “Mom” at 9 p.m. held the lead-in support, also with a 4.5/ 7 in the 9 p.m. half-hour, followed by “Life in Pieces” at a compatible 3.1/ 5 at 9:30 p.m. But recent medical drama entry “Pure Genius” earned its cancellation stripes at a 3.0/ 5 (#3) at 10 p.m.

In season-premiere news, ABC competition “The Great American Baking Show” scored a modest 3.1/ 5 from 9-11 p.m. out of a 3.9/ 6 for annual animated special “A Charlie Brown Christmas.” Consider this nothing more than temporary time period filler.
On The CW, the four night superhero-themed drama crossover also benefitted “D.C.’s Legends of Tomorrow” with an above-average 2.4/ 4 at 8 p.m. Effective on Tuesday, Jan. 24, “D.C.’s Legends of Tomorrow” moves into the Tuesday 9 p.m. hour out of “The Flash.” Next was veteran “Supernatural” at a 1.3/ 2 at 9 p.m., which slipped by 46 percent.

Fox, meanwhile, remained out of the competitive loop care of dramas “Rosewood” (#4: 2.4/ 4 at 8 p.m.), which moves to Friday at 8 p.m. on Jan. 6 into the return of “Sleepy Hollow,” and recent entry “Pitch” (#4: 1.9/ 3).

What follows is the breakdown by half-hour for Thursday, Nov. 17:

8:00 p.m.
ABC – “A Charlie Brown Christmas” (R): 3.9/ 6 (#3)
CBS – “The Big Bang Theory”: 9.5/15 (#1)
The team decides to hold Kangaroo Court. This leads to an argument between Mike and Ginny. Mike is frustrated that the higher-ups are trying to get rid of him. Ginny’s brother, Will, shows up. Flashbacks reveal that he was there when Ginny just started out in the Majors but that he was a mess so Amelia sent him away. Now, Will wants to start a sports bar with Ginny and Evelyn offers to help. This leads to friction between Amelia and Ginny.

Most awkward relationship: Things were already tense between Will and Amelia this week and I doubt we’ve seen the last of it. If I had to pick a side in this, I’d probably choose Amelia. She’s just trying to protect Ginny in every way she can. That includes financially. Starting a business with someone who has debts is a big risk. Starting a business with a family member who has debts is even riskier. From where I’m standing it looks like Will got himself in trouble and now he hopes that his rich and successful sister will bail him out. I get why Amelia tried to keep all of this from her both this week and in the flashbacks. Ginny’s main focus should be baseball. Getting swept up in her brother’s drama wouldn’t have done her any good. In the flashbacks, she was already in a bad place after her first game didn’t go well. If Will had been added to the mix, she might not have been able to come back the way she did and her career would have been over before it started. I suspect there will soon be a huge argument between Will and Amelia, I’m curious to see who Ginny will side with once she knows all of the facts.
Favorite moment: Even though I’m still on board of the Ginny and Mike ship, I really did enjoy seeing Blip and Mike fend off Omar. Ginny has said several times that she doesn’t date baseball players. Omar acting like a lovesick idiot because he has a crush is the last thing she needs. In any other context this might have come across as them saying who she can and can’t date, but that’s not the case here. They know she already has enough on her mind. If Omar had come to her with his “feelings” she would’ve had to turn him down which would have made things a lot more awkward on the team just when she’s finally found her place.

Grumpiest player: Mike has had a lot on his mind lately. He’s never had to worry about being traded before but now it seems like a real possibility. Now that Duarte’s presence threatens his position on the team, he’s had to start looking at other possibilities. He’s clearly struggling with this decision all the way through the episode. He finally chose Chicago. I’m not sure what attributed to this decision but I can’t help but feel that Ginny had something to do with it.

Missed opportunity: I have missed seeing Sarah Shahi on my screen but there were so many better roles for her to play than Oscar’s girlfriend. Honestly, I’m not entirely sure what the point of her character was in this episode. According to IMDB, she’ll be in the next episode as well. Hopefully, things will become clearer then. However, this is not me complaining. The more Sarah Shahi we get, the better.

About the Daily Ratings - Please Read if you are new to Ratings

Each day (except Sunday) during the main TV Season we post the TV Ratings for the previous nights primetime shows for the major broadcast networks (ABC, CBS, CW, FOX, NBC). Cable Network ratings will be added to the Ratings Database.

The first item that gets posted (normally around 2pm GMT) is the early overnight analysis based on the early household numbers (these are not the same as the Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers that are posted later).

Next, if available, we will post the Top 25 Market 18-49 Ratings to give you a rough idea of the ratings to following.

Later on (normally between 4pm-5pm GMT) we post the official early overnight Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers in the table above (We also where possible now post the 18-34 and 25-54 Demo Numbers).

Finally, later in the evening (10pm-11pm GMT) or the following day, the final adjusted ratings numbers are released, these are then posted in the Ratings Database. The Final Adjusted numbers are what we use for all our Renew/Cancellation Tables, Full Season Tables, Ratings Scorecards etc (see below). Friday's Final Adjusted Ratings are normally available on the following Monday.
