A little review of Person of Interest and my 4 favourite episodes. What were your favourites?

Part 1: Series Review

"Person of Interest" is an intricately woven tapestry of technology, philosophy, and humanity, conceived and executed with finesse by creator Jonathan Nolan. Revolving around an enigmatic billionaire software genius, Harold Finch (Michael Emerson), and a former CIA operative, John Reese (Jim Caviezel), the show uncovers a surreal post-9/11 world, depicting the omnipresence of artificial intelligence, surveillance, and the delicate balance of morality and privacy rights.

The series is a blend of procedural drama and serialized storytelling, tackling a "number of the week" format while gradually unfurling overarching narratives. Finch's creation, "The Machine," a superintelligent AI that predicts crimes before they occur, serves as the linchpin, setting the series apart from conventional crime dramas. The Machine's creation raises profound questions about morality, determinism, and the role of technology in society, touching on the nuances of existentialism.

The show's strength lies in its characters, richly drawn and flawlessly portrayed. Emerson's Finch is a masterclass in nuanced acting, while Caviezel's Reese is an emblem of stoic heroism. Characters like Root (Amy Acker), an anarchist hacker turned believer in The Machine, and Shaw (Sarah Shahi), a pragmatic former assassin, add depth and dynamism to the narrative.

"Person of Interest" is a brilliant exploration of techno-paranoia, the concept of precrime, and human connection. It's filled with moments of heart-stopping suspense, emotional resonance, and thought-provoking themes, offering a transcendent viewing experience that grows increasingly relevant in our technologically advancing world.

Part 2: Review of "The Contingency" (Season 2, Episode 1)

"The Contingency" represents a compelling shift in the series' narrative trajectory, introducing a new level of complexity as Finch is abducted and Reese must rely solely on The Machine's cryptic instructions to find him. This episode uncovers a layered depiction of The Machine's capabilities and autonomy, instilling an eerie sense of intelligence and consciousness in the AI.

The episode offers a deep exploration into the characters' vulnerabilities and strengths, notably Reese's relentless commitment to Finch. Caviezel's performance is at its peak here, embodying desperation and determination simultaneously. Meanwhile, Emerson excellently portrays Finch's stoic acceptance of his grim predicament, adding a sense of gravitas to his character.

A gripping storyline, brilliant performances, and a startling ending featuring the introduction of Root as a formidable antagonist establish "The Contingency" as a pivotal episode in the series.

Part 3: Review of "If-Then-Else" (Season 4, Episode 11)

"If-Then-Else" is a brilliant hour of television that pushes the boundaries of narrative structure. The episode focuses on The Machine performing simulations to determine the best course of action for a dangerous situation, with the narrative toggling between potential realities. The outcome is a seamless blend of drama, humor, and tragedy that sets this episode apart.

This episode delves deeper into The Machine's character, imbuing it with a sense of humanity and empathy. We see the AI running simulations in mere seconds, each one a testament to its 'care' for the team. This exploration of AI sentimentality combined with the nail-biting suspense of the bank heist plot adds a profound emotional depth.

"If-Then-Else" showcases the true essence of "Person of Interest", affirming the show’s innovation in storytelling and its remarkable ability to personify an AI entity.

Part 4: Review of "Deus Ex Machina" (Season 3, Episode 23)

"Deus Ex Machina" is a turning point for "Person of Interest." The tension culminates as the rival AI, Samaritan, comes online, establishing a new order. This episode excels in its portrayal of a looming dystopia, backed by flawless performances and high-stakes storytelling.

In the face of impending doom, characters are forced to make difficult choices. Reese, Finch, Shaw, and Root must adapt and make sacrifices, revealing the deep bond and trust among them. Meanwhile, the emergence of Samaritan underscores the series' recurring theme of surveillance and control.

"Deus Ex Machina" ends with a chilling cliffhanger that resets the status quo. It's a thrilling, impactful episode that changes the direction of the series and emphasizes the show's propensity for unpredictability.

Part 5: Review of "The Day the World Went Away" (Season 5, Episode 10)

"The Day the World Went Away" serves as a culmination of the series' emotional arcs and a heartbreaking farewell to a beloved character. As Finch's cover is blown, the characters are thrust into a dire situation that tests their resilience and loyalty.

This episode shines in its emotional weight. It beautifully illustrates the profound bond between Finch, Reese, Root, and Shaw. Acker delivers an outstanding performance as Root, portraying her fierce loyalty to Finch and The Machine with a heartbreaking vulnerability.

The episode's poignant climax redefines the series, introducing The Machine in a new voice and role. As a pivotal episode in the final season, "The Day the World Went Away" is a testament to "Person of Interest's" blend of emotionally resonant storytelling and high-octane action, leaving a lasting impact on the viewer.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29964715.post-6193535585596832052023-05-17T12:00:00.005+01:002023-05-17T12:00:00.665+01:00USD POLL : Which science fiction TV show has the most compelling portrayal of an artificial intelligence character?
Onto the second day, starting with ever-present and 2011 bronze medalist, Fringe, facing newbie, Ghosts. That’s followed by an all-debutant affair with Walker Independence vs. 1899, which was only released 11 days ago.

Triple-winner Person of Interest opens its account against another debutant, Yellowjackets, while Buffy makes its 12th appearance against HBO’s Succession, making its first.

Stranger Things missed out last year but returns ahead of its final season, against another show making its bow, The Old Man. Station 19 finished third in its maiden appearance last year and the quest to go even better begins against Killing Eve. And we end on Teen Wolf, back after a year out for its eighth appearance (having won just one tie), facing Legacies - a second appearance having debuted in 2019.

A reminder of the rules:

1) A pair of shows will go into battle in a poll, where after exactly 24 hours, the leading show will win the battle and will progress into the next round. Each poll will open at 12pm ET on a given day.
2) Vote for your favourite and spread the word with your friends & fans.
3) One vote per person per poll.
4) Comment on what you voted for on in the comments below.
5) Have fun. This is a friendly & competitive competition. Please do not start attacking other fans or fangroups in the comments, because this really isn't what this competition is about.

Update - 25 November: Nominations are now closed! The competition will begin on Monday.

Update - 19 November: Blood & Treasure is considered a current show. This rule will apply to any show where the most recent season has aired in the last six months and has concluded airing but there has been no official word on a renewal or cancellation.

Welcome to the 13th edition of the SpoilerTV Favourite TV Series Competition! The observant among you will have noticed that it is not August, which is when we usually begin this competition, alongside the SpoilerTV Awards, Episode Competition and Character Cup. Well, my busy summer prevented me running it in the usual slot, and Dahne - who ran last year's version so brilliantly - couldn't either.

Instead, as we build up to the holiday season, complete with season and midseason finales, and all sorts of drama across the television landscape, we're once again offering you the chance to vote for your favourite shows.

Of all the thousands of TV shows out there, we need you to narrow it down to just 64. Among those 64 will be an even split between current and finished shows.

There are a couple of really fun things about this competition. One is that you get to shout loud and proud about the shows that mean the most to you, that you love beyond belief, that you are desperate for everyone else to enjoy. The other is that it has become incredibly open - five different shows have won it in the past five years, four of them for the first time! The full ranking of every show to ever compete in the competition is viewable here.

The nomination rules are simple: submit two current and two finished shows. A current show is any show that has aired or will air episodes after 31 October 2022. So that means that, yes, Atlanta and The Good Fight, and The Walking Dead (series finale two days after nominations open) are all current shows.

I cannot stress enough how important it is to nominate in the correct category. If you submit in the wrong category, that part of your nomination will not count! Please ask in the comments if you are unsure which category your choice falls into.

Don't submit the same show more than once in the same entry, as doing this means I will tally it zero times! Putting the same show multiple times into your nomination will not help its cause.

Similarly, please only submit the form once. Multiple entries by the same person all get removed. If you make an error in your submission, or wish to change your entry, simply leave a comment below.

Please note that only scripted, English-language shows; or non-English language shows covered by SpoilerTV are eligible for nomination.

Nominations will close on Friday 25 November, with the voting stage of the competition beginning the following Monday.

Notable shows (any others brought to my attention will be added to the top of the post and the bottom of the list):
Current - Atlanta, The Good Fight, The Walking Dead, Blood & Treasure
Yesterday saw decisive victories for New Amsterdam, Station 19, and Brooklyn 99. However, Loki defeated Buffy the Vampire Slayer by a mere 6 votes, making it a tie for the closest race so far. That hands Buffy her lowest ranking loss since 2010 when the contest started. Other than that year, Buffy had always gotten to the Sweet 16 at least, except for last year when she was not even in the contest. Sniff, sniff. Someday Buffy you will be crowned the queen you are.

Cloisscherzy retains an impressive lead over in the prediction contest with 10 points over second place and only Motherland: Fort Salem as a loss. Things are shaking up in the other spots though, as t4sos and Alec Lav are tied with 34 points each. Congratulations to all! In full teacher mode, I have decided that no name prediction polls do not count so if you also have 34 points, let me know who you are. Happy voting!

Championship Stats:

1. Grey’s Anatomy and Person of Interest were second and third in the least number of votes for a winner in round 1. It should be interesting to see how they fare here.

2. Young Sheldon barely beat out SWAT in round 1 and had the least number of votes for a winner. In contrast, Orphan Black had the biggest upset when it beat Ted Lasso, a difference in rank of 45.

3. Fringe has been in the contest every year, reaching 2nd in 2011. Person of Interest has won this contest 3 times - in 2015, 2016, and 2017.

With rounds 1A and 1B finished, we’ve come to the middle of round 1. While The Witcher vs. 911 and The Walking Dead vs Nancy Drew were close for most of round 1A, The Witcher and The Walking Dead both pulled out a decent lead by the end. The other polls were in the 60+% range and weren’t even close. In round 1B, the Motherland: Fort Salem vs Station 19 poll inspired the most passion with almost twice the number of votes of any other round 1B poll. However, the real nailbiter was Brooklyn 99 vs Legends of Tomorrow, which ran neck and neck throughout most of the day with Brooklyn 99 pulling ahead by only 20 votes in the end. The others weren’t close at all. What a difference between this contest and the Character Cup! Shows advancing to round 2 are: Doctor Who, New Amsterdam, Dead to Me, Agents of SHIELD, Station 19, LOST, and Brooklyn 99.

Over in the prediction contest, Cloisscherzy has pulled out ahead with a score of 13 but t4sos and Cyn Kin are right behind with 12 points. Way to be off to a great start! Congrats to all! Brackets can be found below the polls and will automatically update once the results are entered into Challonge.
Throwback Thursday is a weekly article in which we look back at our favorite TV episodes from the past.

“The Devil’s Share” is notable for a number of reasons. It bookends the first of two trilogies Person of Interest did. It concludes, once and for all, the H.R. story that had existed within the show ever since the Pilot. It provides a fitting epilogue to the death of Joss Carter, our characters making sure that her demise was not in vain and that those involved in the tragic and stunning murder were brought down. And it is also the dividing point between the two versions of Person of Interest: the procedural, number-of-the-week with a hint of mythology approach ended, making space for the heavily serialised, A.I. war which followed.

There remain those fans wedded to the procedural format, who even at the time disliked the shift in approaches, the promotion of Root to being an integral part of the series, the pivot away from saving ordinary people in one-off instalments. Arguments over which is better could rage on forever. But what is beyond dispute is that “The Devil’s Share” is an hour of total brilliance that remains one of the best things CBS has ever put on air.

Want iconic? Johnny Cash’s cover of “Hurt”, played over the opening montage as the fractured Team Machine search for Carter-killer Patrick Simmons is stunning, a demonstration of how to perfectly use popular music over a scene. As we start sombre, witnessing Carter’s funeral and Reese in critical condition, the music hits those early sombre beats. As Shaw and Reese go after those helping Simmons, the acoustics raise, the thrill intensifies; everything we’re seeing and hearing gets darker, culminating in Reese’s decision to let three accomplices burn alive. Tall, dark and deranged, indeed.

Yet it’s arguably not even the best use of music in the episode. Digitalism’s “Miami Showdown” is a work of electronic art, and intensifies the joy of Reese’s trip through the motel to find Alonzo Quinn. That sequence is preceded by one of the many flashbacks throughout this hour, with Reese carrying out a covert mission in 2007. It’s 21 minutes into the episode before the leading man first says a word, and even then he’s acting, a convincing performance as the meek, green cadet to fool his mark — the prospective C.O. — who’d been selling operatives’ names to the Chinese.

Flashbacks are a key element in Person of Interest's storytelling, and two of the best and most revealing feature here. Finch’s therapy (with Jessica Hecht as the therapist) following Nathan’s death is insightful, the way he feels guilt for his friend’s death an important part in the series’ portrayal of Finch not only in this episode but moving forwards.

But it’s the scenes with Shaw and Fusco that are the most fascinating. Doctor Shaw’s interview with a more senior doctor, who calls her out for her lack of emotion despite technical brilliance, paints her in a new light while also reinforcing what we had already surmised ourselves. Five episodes prior, in “Razgovor,” the fire rescue officer who saved Shaw from the car accident which killed her father suggested there was something wrong with her for having no emotional response to the news – it’s a naïve, short-sighted and somewhat discriminatory view but the substance of his thought is correct: she has an emotional disorder.

It’s why she has to leave her job in the medical industry and shift to working for the CIA, a job far more suited to her nerveless skillset and her execution of fine precision. If you can perfectly cut into a living human with a scalpel to save their life, you can shoot someone from 800 yards away with a sniper. Or so goes the logic. And, of course, her decision to eat a candy bar while providing bereavement news highlights how she would be totally unfazed murdering people for a living.

And then we come to Fusco’s flashback. In the Pilot, Fusco was initially set as an opponent to Reese and Finch; it was only the intervention of the Man in the Suit, on the journey to his own death by Fusco’s hand, which prevented the detective falling down the same H.R. rabbit hole as Simmons. Kevin Chapman’s character is comedy gold on this show, but for a short time, there’s no laughter. Just emotion, and a stark depiction of the change he has gone through. Eight years before, he murdered a criminal who killed a rookie cop and then lied about the way it went down, before “unburdening” himself to the psychologist. It’s a remarkable scene and, if not for the one that follows, would be Chapman’s best, the disinterest Fusco shows an indication of something bigger, and the glee on his face describing his revenge a glorious insight into how far gone he once was.

Then comes Chapman’s pièce de résistance. His physical fight with Simmons is fun, and provides a surrogate release for viewers itching to see the dirty cop get his comeuppance. But it’s the monologue that follows which is fascinating and so absorbing. So much of the past two and a half seasons focused on the dynamic between Carter and Reese, Carter bringing out his good side as much as possible and Reese teaching her that sometimes going outside the boundaries of the law is necessary — not to mention the romantic angle.

Fusco and Carter had a strong relationship too, and it’s most strikingly referenced here as he justifies not killing Simmons. The 2005 Fusco would’ve done it without a second thought. But, as he outlines in a gloriously emotional scene, that’s not who he is anymore. Chapman’s voice cracks briefly as he describes how Carter reminded him that he could be “a good father, a good friend, a good cop” again too. We feel every word, and if we’ve just witnessed him at his lowest — admitting to cold-blooded murder — this is Fusco at his highest. He’s taken down the lowlife who killed his partner, and he’s done it not only on Carter’s terms but the way she would’ve wanted him to, for his own good.

“I’m not gonna let you undo all the good she did,” he tells Simmons. And quite right too. He’s done terrible things but working with Carter was key in turning his life around. No satisfaction of revenge is worth throwing that away.

That’s not an issue for Elias, though. He is, as he describes to Simmons, an “outlier.” Sure, he has something of a loose moral code — which, admittedly, extends to “don’t murder the man who saved your life” and “fair is fair” — but he’s had no salvation, no second chance, no positive road to stay on. He’s a mob boss who does whatever he wants, and so has no reservations about killing Simmons. And it’s that loose moral code which drives him to do it: Carter saved his life, and apart from that he respected her.

Elias had long been a fan favourite even before this, Enrico Colantoni’s performance a wonderful mix of joyful and intimidating; he’s the criminal mastermind hidden in plain sight whose tone will make you forget he’s killing you, as he orders your death. But committing the murder most Person of Interest fans were rooting for only elevated his status, and the scene works to perfectly, beautifully end what was, at the time, the show’s best episode. By killing Simmons, the final loose end to the H.R. story is tied up, and 53 episodes’ worth of plot is completed.

It’s good, therefore, that “The Devil’s Share” also works to continue the tease of the plot for the next 50 episodes. Finch finally lets Root out of her cage to help stop Reese, and Amy Acker is simply wonderful as ever in saying aloud the Machine’s instructions, asking Shaw for a gun, outlining to Finch how something terrible is coming. She’s critical to everything which is to come in the war between the Machine and Samaritan, and we get a glimpse here of just how much fun that will be.

At the time of airing, in November 2013, I remember being taken aback at Root’s suggestion of a “larger fight” ahead of them. For weeks, we had been teased by her over the fact that something was coming, and it was difficult to fathom that anything could be more significant than the “Endgame” trilogy, and the destruction of H.R. — how wrong that would turn out to be. The war against Samaritan would change the game entirely, completely restructuring the way Person of Interest operated and providing some of the most unmissable network television since LOST.

But no matter what came after, one thing is clear: “The Devil’s Share” is a masterpiece.

We enter round two today, and the first two polls are probably the most seismic of the entire round. Six shows have won this competition before, and three of them feature today. Start with a bang, why don't we. Analysis of the first round to come tomorrow, but let's dive straight into the next set of matches.

Lucifer opened with victory against Smallville. It has twice been eliminated at this stage, although that feels a long time ago with two final appearances in the last two years. Firefly will be hoping to deny the devil drama any further progress. The Rookie proved its name and crashed out, but the short-lived FOX series has been knocked out in round two in consecutive years.

Shadowhunters is the competition's reigning champion but was four votes short of being eliminated in round one. For the first time this year, it gives me a chance to remind you all: your vote matters! Given that it's reached the semi-finals every time, that would have been a gigantic fall from grace. Unfortunately, things don't get easier for our holder, because three-time winner Person of Interest stands in the way today. It cruised past The Walking Dead to be here, and has reached the third round both years since its last triumph.

A reminder of the rules:

1) Two shows will go into battle in a poll, where after exactly 24 hours, the leading show will win the battle and will progress into the next round.

Enter the holders, Shadowhunters. Victory last year felt like something of a long time coming: the Freeform show has featured in three competitions, and reached the semi-finals in its first two. The series was three months past ending last year, so it will be interesting to see whether it can build up the same momentum this time. It's up against This Is Us, a show which felt immensely popular on SpoilerTV when it debuted in 2016, but which is making only its second appearance. A 52nd-place finish in 2018 doesn't bode well against the reigning champion.

Three-time former winner Person of Interest gets its run underway today. It's the competition's joint-most successful show but has twice been eliminated in the third round since its last victory in 2018. There really is no way to predict how it might fare this year, but I'd gamble a Shadowhunters-POI second-round clash will end badly for the CBS show. Of course, it has to get past one of the last decade's juggernaut shows first. The Walking Dead has appeared in every competition since it premiered, but has only once (in 2016) reached round two. Can it repeat that feat in 2020?

Update: 10th August - Nominations are now closed. Check back on Friday 14th August for the start of the competition!
Update: 4th August - Almost Paradise confirmed as a finished show
Update: 3rd August - Dark confirmed as an eligible finished show

On Friday, 4th June 2010, something began at SpoilerTV. Adam Harris launched a hunt for the best TV shows ever, one that would cause much stir amongst fans and drive fandoms everywhere to champion their show, to anyone who might listen.

A massive 3,713 days later, we launch the tenth anniversary of the SpoilerTV Favourite TV Series Competition. Over the years, 191 different shows have competed to have their name on the trophy, but only six have managed it. Supernatural and Castle formed a titanic rivalry in the early years, with the CW's hit triumphing in 2010, 2011 and 2013, and ABC's drama in 2012. Since then, we've had winners from across the spectrum: first Outlander on debut in 2014, then three consecutive wins for Person of Interest, followed by Lucifer's victory. Last year, Shadowhunters joined SpoilerTV royalty.

Ten years on from the very first quest, we begin our annual search anew. Who will win it this year?

Only time will tell.

But we need your help.

Out of the thousands of TV series there are, old and new, great or poor, we need just 64.

You can vote for your favourite two current TV series, and your favourite two finished TV series. The top 32 current TV series and the top 32 finished TV series will make the final 64.

You have until August 10th to enter your submissions in the form below.

We have parameters on what constitutes a current or a finished show. A current TV series is any show that has aired/will air new episodes after 31st July 2020. A finished TV series is any show that had aired its final episode on or before 31st July 2020. Therefore, a show like Breaking Bad would now be a finished TV series, whilst The Walking Dead would be classed as current. If you have any queries as to whether a show would be classed as current or finished, email me at bradley@spoilertv.com.

Please note that only scripted, English-language shows; or non-English language shows covered by SpoilerTV are eligible for nomination.

The COVID-19 pandemic has the potential to cause problems with the parameters this year. Below is a list of some shows which we've clarified. Obviously, we cannot clarify every show. Please remember that if your show stopped production, was subsequently cancelled, but still has at least one episode it expects to air once production resumes, that counts as a current show.

Notable shows (any others brought to my attention will be added to the top of the post and the bottom of the list):
Current - A Discovery of Witches, Agents of SHIELD, Billions, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Doom Patrol, Into The Dark, Little Voice, NOS4A2, One Day at a Time, Spider-Man, Step Up, Supernatural, The 100, The Alienist, The Chi, The Umbrella Academy, United We Fall
Finished - Empire
Finished - Dark
Finished - Almost Paradise

NOTE: Only 1 submission per person. If you try to submit multiple times, ALL of your submissions will be removed.

Do not try to submit shows in the wrong category. If you try this, that part of your submission will not count. If you are unsure which category a show should go in, please ask.

Do not submit the same show twice (or more) in a nomination. If you do, that selection will not count.

From 64 to 32. We've said goodbye to half of our characters as we head into Round 2. Thanks so much to everyone who has nominated, voted, and especially, commented. You've made the hiatus better. The round 1 stats are now updated and some trends have emerged. New characters had it the roughest with only 38% of them moving to round 2. One-named characters also struggled with the exception of Lexa and Villanelle. What didn't change was the strength of our most nominated characters, Scylla Ramshorn and Jamie Fraser, who had the most votes. For other stats, check out the link below.

As we move into round 2, some things are different. Rules are now in the links below. Please read them if you missed round 1. Also, the mini-contest nominations start today and will remain open through the end of round 2B. Woo hoo! Until then, may the votes be close and your favorites squeak through. Happy voting!

Mini-Contest Nominations:

For those of you new to the Cup, we added in a mini-contest 5 years ago to keep people engaged after their favorite characters were out. This gives everyone a fresh start and something new to root for. The mini-contest always starts in round 4 and you have until Round 2B is finished to nominate. You can nominate up to 3 shows, by putting the show names in the form below. Any show still in the contest at round 3 is ineligible and normal nominating rules apply. Only one submission per person please. If you have questions, head for the comments.

This year our theme is...Best Series Finale. Thanks to LauraLoo for suggesting it. To qualify, a show must be completely finished with no upcoming episodes or movies. It also cannot still be in the Cup in round 3. When nominating, only put the show name, not the episode title. I can't wait to see your choices!

Welcome to the second day of voting in the 2020 SpoilerTV Character Cup. Last year, there were some very tight races but except for two polls, much of round 1A was a blowout, leading to all females advancing to the next round. The closest race was between Elizabeth Jennings and Stiles Stilinski, with the lead changing multiple times. In the end, Elizabeth nudged out Stiles by 3 votes. Every vote counts so don’t forget to pass the word. As for the prediction contest, 2 people had all polls correct this time: Caomoyl and no name. Congratulations to both!

To ensure that everybody has a good time, please read the rules below. It is important that everyone be kind and fair to make this the most fun for everyone. There are also links below to the list of character rankings/stats, character videos, and the prediction contest leaderboard. The daily TV Talk Topic will be found above the polls each time. We have a new TV Talk Topic every day and all are encouraged to participate. It's my favorite part of the contest. I’ve also added the bracket results below the polls.

For those of you with underdog characters, get the word out now because the round 1 is where the biggest change can happen. Generally there are fewer votes in round 1, so it is far easier for an upset. Good luck to all and happy voting!

Character Cup Rules:

1. Don't take it too seriously! Have fun. Discuss. Play nice.

2. Cheaters suck! - Only one vote per person per poll please. While we will do our best to keep this contest running smoothly, it's up to each person to follow the rules. This contest is just a fun little piece of internet fluff during hiatus. It won't get anyone's show renewed or un-cancelled. It has zero effect on ratings. It won't even be seen by anyone who has any power in the TV industry, so there is zero reason to cheat. All cheaters do is disrespect themselves, their fandom, their show, the actors, and this community. Just don't.

3. Focus on characters, not people. Talking about what you like and dislike about a character is encouraged. Going after actors or fans is not.

4. The aliens have not landed. There's no conspiracy here. I will do my very best to keep the contest running smoothly, but I do make mistakes. I apologize in advance for any technical difficulties, spelling errors, and general absentmindedness. Let me know and I'll fix it.

5. Comments are life. As you anxiously await the return of your shows, why not distract yourself with a little TV Talk? Each day is a new topic so even if your favorites are out, you can still discuss. Last year, the consensus was to narrow the focus of the topics but feel free to go off on any tangent you want. While this contest is just a silly little distraction, the conversation here dives deep, so jump on in.

6. Nuts and Bolts - All polls are active for about 24 hours. The winners advance to the next round. In the case of a tie, both characters go to the next round. New polls should go up every day and polls may sometimes overlap each other. Any questions? Ask away in the comments.

TV Talk Topic:

TV Talk Topic: TV Grilled Cheese - I love grilled cheese. It’s my favorite comfort food. In a world that is in chaos, now more than ever, we need the TV equivalent of comfort food. How have the events of 2020 changed your TV habits? What shows, new or old, have helped you cope with the stress of this year? (A big thansk to Monique75 for helping with the topic.)
Welcome to Day 7 of our pitches. Pitches from previous days can be found in the links below. Again, thank you to everyone who helped with the pitches. To keep articles shorter and more readable, all pitches were edited for length, clarity, and grammar. Nominations were also limited to 3 per show with a couple very popular shows having more. I am truly sorry if your nomination is not in here. Know that I appreciate your time and pitches. Making the choice of what went in was difficult. After all sections are posted, I will include a link to the original spreadsheet so you can read them all in their unedited entirety.
-6 seasons, 142 episodes

1. The North Remembers - Scott Wolf, Matthew Fox, Neve Campbell, and Lacey Chabert star as orphaned siblings in this prime example of how to make a teen drama while addressing hot topics such as loss, hardship, and finding your way in the world in the midst of tragedy. After their parents are killed in a drunk driving accident, the Salinger siblings are forced into positions they never thought possible. Struggling to overcome the loss of their parents, they take on the task of running their family restaurant as a way to keep their parents’ memories alive. Through the show, the five siblings struggle with the choices they make and the twists life throws at them. A deeply written show with heart, it focuses on overcoming adversity and the trials of dealing with grief while also incorporating topics such as alcoholism, cancer recovery, and domestic violence.
- 5 seasons, 30 episodes

1. The North Remembers - Peaky Blinders is a crime family show and a period drama that any fans of both would love. Set in England in the 1920’s, it follows war veteran Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy) as he assumes command of his family’s gang. The Peaky Blinders has its hands in numerous criminal activities from illegal gambling to their blackmarket dealings. When he stumbles upon a shipment of army-issued guns, Tommy sees it as an opportunity to move up in the world. Unlike other gang-themed dramas, Peaky Blinders portrays the realism of a post-World War 1 England where the effects of war have created economic turmoil and resources are scarce. Thus, it’s a breeding ground for broken, desperate people, who often have no choice but to turn to a life of crime just to get by - something Tommy exploits with calculating, ruthless precision. Eventually as his ambitions grow, Tommy expands his enterprise across Europe and he takes on rival gangs, a violent, dogged police inspector, and far more dangerous criminals.
- 1 season, 13 episodes

1. Maria - I was very excited when I first heard of NBC's Perfect Harmony. I tend to like singing shows and sure enough, it did not disappoint! The songs are amazing! Also, the whole cast is great. More people should consider watching it!

2. Folie-lex - The church choir of a small southern town asks an Ivy League music professor, whose career and personal life are a bit on the fritz, for help with actually becoming a functioning choir. Now personally I have a soft spot for shows that allow Bradley Whitford to have fun, but there’s genuinely more to love about Perfect Harmony than just that. Relying on its exceptional cast (which, besides Whitford, includes Anna Camp, Will Greenberg, Rizwan Manji, Geno Segers, Tymberlee Hill and the revelation that is Spencer Allport), their chemistry, the characters’ loveable personalities, and, as an added perk, some kickass covers of popular songs, this quirky and fun little show manages to worm its way into your heart slowly, with every passing episode.

Editor's Note: This was my favorite new comedy last season. It surpasses Trophy Wife and ties The West Wing for my favorite Bradley Whitford performance. That says a lot.
- 5 seasons, 103 episodes

1. The North Remembers - Billionaire genius Harold Finch (Michael Emerson) develops an algorithmic computer program that detects which individuals will be involved in violent crimes. Sometimes they’re victims and sometimes they’re perpetrators. Teaming up with former CIA agent John Reese and two NYPD detectives, the four work together to stop crimes in the Big Apple. Later additions to this ragtag band include a cyber criminal (Amy Acker), an Army operative (Sarah Shahi), and even a crime boss. With sci-fi elements, serialized arcs, and compelling, memorable characters, this Jonathan Nolan and JJ Abrams brainchild is a must watch.
-1 season, 6 episodes

1. Lou - An alternative history mini-series which charts the chilling rise of fascism in 1940s America, The Plot Against America isn't an easy watch as we follow events through the eyes of a Jewish family, the Levins. What makes it essential viewing though is how realistic it feels. Some alternative history stories feel a little too ludicrous but the premise here feels plausible. The performances are all-around great; standouts include Anthony Boyle, Zoe Kazan, Winona Ryder and young actor Caleb Malis. With fascism on the rise again in many Western countries, this show is vital viewing.
- 6 seasons, 63 episodes

1. The North Remembers - Created by Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson and Kemp Agboh of The Good Wife, James St. Patrick (Omari Hardwick) lives two lives. He is an infamous, ruthless drug-dealer called ‘Ghost,' but he is also the owner of the most illustrious nightclub in New York City, seeking to go legit and leave his criminal life behind him. However, forces outside and within his own circle conspire to derail his dreams, and James suddenly finds keeping both his worlds separate is easier said than done as he works to protect what he has built. Raunchy, gritty and full of violence, it's mostly a tale of family values, loyalty that can be challenged, and how one’s nature can conflict with itself, which makes for much compelling storytelling.
- 1 season, 20 episodes

1. Dahne - In a TV season with remarkably good new shows, Prodigal Son was my favorite. It follows a family still reeling, decades later, from learning that their husband/father is a serial killer. Dealing with the aftereffects, the show centers on son Malcolm as he navigates his PTSD while consulting for the police. The first case forces him to work with his father to his mother’s horror. While the overarching mystery of the Girl in the Box and the episodic cases are interesting, what makes this show are the family dynamics, especially that between Malcolm and his mother, Jessica. Once Malcolm realizes that Jessica has suffered too, their dynamic changes and they become endearingly protective of each other. His relationships with his father and sister are other high points. The episodes themselves are fast-paced and the ones that focus on the serialized mystery are especially high stakes, with the family at risk from a serial killer conspirator of their father’s. Prodigal Son has been renewed for a second season and all episodes are available for streaming, so this is the perfect time to catch up on one of the most intriguing shows of last season.

2. CamillaJO - Prodigal Son is fun, serious, and exciting. It has a lot of great actors and a spin on a TV show we have not seen before.

3. The North Remembers - When Prodigal Son was announced, I was extremely hesitant to try it despite the cast having big name actors and an interesting concept but, after two episodes I was hooked. The story is pretty basic. Malcolm Bright, a criminal profiler who is fired from the FBI, is then hired as a consultant for the NYPD. Yes, Malcolm works with the police but that is only his job. The show itself is 3/4 a family drama and 1/4 police show with shockers that keeps you on your toes. The main focus is on Malcolm and his personal relationships with those in his life, be it with his estranged sister, his worrying mother with her own dark secrets, his imprisoned serial killer father, or just Malcolm trying to overcome the repressed trauma of his childhood. Being the son of a notorious serial killer does mess one up. But despite his psychological strife, Malcolm realizes he can get through it with the help of his father figure Gil (Lou Diamond Philips), the cop who arrested his father years ago and who values Malcom’s insight and the perspective he brings to keeping the city safe. The constant theme of the show is how relationships affect you for better or worse, and despite how tumultuous or even deadly those relationships are, you can never fully escape them.
-1 season, 13 episodes

1. The North Remembers - I’m not usually one for legal dramas but Reckless is the only one I made the effort to watch start to finish. I sampled it for the cast and stayed for the plot even if it did end in a cliffhanger. Set in Charleston South Carolina, it follows defense attorney Jamie Sawyer (Anna Wood) representing ex-police officer Lee Anne Marcus (Georgina Haig) after she is fired for a sex scandal. However, the more Jaimie digs into this case the more she realizes there are several people who do not want it to go to trial. She is stonewalled and set back by everyone from a corrupt cop (Shawn Hatosy) to a mayoral candidate, who are doing their damndest to make sure Jamie’s case doesn’t stick. While it is a legal show with political and character twists, it can get a bit soapy which makes for a very enjoyable time if you’re into a guilty pleasure type show.
-4 season, 76 episodes

1. Dahne’s niece - I’ve only seen the pilot of this show so when we needed another pitch for it, I turned to the biggest Riverdale fan I know, my teenage niece. Here’s her pitch: “I think people should watch Riverdale because there’s a lot of action in it. It is really cool but it can also be really silly. People might like the characters from the comics as well. It also has romance with the action. My favorite pair is Jughead and Betty, because they are cute and Jughead is my favorite character. There is a lot of violence though, but that’s kind of the point of the mystery of the show. The mystery can be a little confusing sometimes but it is really good.”

Before he can slay him however, Aku banishes the warrior to the distant future allowing Aku to enslave not only the world but the universe as well. Now a foreigner in a foreign dystopian time where technology has progressed exponentially and aliens live among humans, the warrior now known as Jack must search for a way to return home while battling Aku’s forces and protecting the innocent. -5 seasons, 80 episodes

1. E. R. Marshall - Schitt's Creek is my happy place. The series is about the Rose family, who find themselves miserably broke and living in a small town they purchased as a joke. Thanks to authentic chemistry (Eugene and Dan Levy, the creators, play father and son, on the series), the relationships, both platonic and romantic, are relatable and realistic. Speaking of, David and Patrick's relationship is one of the greatest love stories to be written. LGBTQ representation in media is important and Schitt’s Creek is leading the way. Also, Schitt’s Creek is hilariously quotable.
- 4 seasons, 93 or 96 episodes

1. Ricardo - The show is set in LA and is basically about a group of 4 high-IQ individuals who, in spite of their high intellect for technical matters, don’t really seem to grasp all of the nuances of people interaction. (As they put it, people with high IQ have low EQ) The story sees them working with Homeland Security to prevent numerous national and international threats, while they attempt to become more functional people in their interactions. Scorpion is honestly a great combination of drama and smart comedy with occasional action. It’s definitely worth the watch, being both intellectual and emotional.

2. Katherine - Scorpion has the perfect mix of action, drama, and romance. It addresses many issues such as autism, false pregnancy, dementia, death and infertility. This is a non-violent show which emphasizes that intelligence is beautiful. It also has some amazing relationships to keep you hooked and guessing what's next.

3. Preach - Scorpion is a unique show where a team of geniuses use science and math to solve cases as opposed to violence. It has interesting characters with in-depth storylines that will make you feel for the characters and how they develop. It represents and explores numerous real world issues like addictions, bullying, psychological trauma, disorders, diseases, single parenting, and phobias, while tackling a range of emotions with its drama, action, suspense, comedy, romance, and knowledge. Based on a real person with some episodes based on real life events, Scorpion represents the importance of family, trust, and working together. The show is educational, but also utilizes the musical talents of the cast, from singing to musical instruments to dancing. The cases vary with the team battling against natural disasters, the elements, technical difficulties, emotional difficulties, injuries, criminal acts, political events, and more.

4. Lis - This is a family friendly show about a team of geniuses assisting Homeland Security solve cases. It is full of comedy/action and also highlights environmental issues and scientific discoveries.
1. Jemery88 - SEAL Team showcases an empathy for what our troops are living right now. It really highlights the physical and mental toll on our military personnel, but it’s also funny at times. It has great characters, writing, action, and fantastic, "in the moment" cinematography. The character development is on-point and highlights different perspectives. SEAL Team is an all-around great show with great military action, a good script, and great character development.

2. Debbie Fitzgerald - With a realistic view of what our military goes through both on and off the battlefield, SEAL Team is written, produced and staffed by veterans. Viewers should see and appreciate what these men and women do for our country.
1. The North Remembers - At a time when the CW was riding high on shows about vampires, werewolves, or brothers who hunted vampires and werewolves, they tried their luck with this short lived, one and done drama about witches. After the death of her mother, young Cassie Blake (Britt Robertson) moves in with her grandmother in the town of Chance Harbor. As she deals with the loss while adjusting to her new life, Cassie is confronted by five schoolmates who reveal to Cassie that she is a witch and the final member of their “circle,” a group of six witches whose magical abilities are unlocked when formed together. At first hesitant to be a part of it, Cassie soon learns of her family’s magical heritage and realizes that this connection played a role in her mother’s death. Cassie eventually joins the circle to master her abilities as they battle demons, witch hunters, and dark witches. All the while, she works to discover who killed her mother and why. Even almost ten years after it went off the air, this fantasy series remains a staple show for the CW.
1. The North Remembers - Never would I have believed a series starring Jennifer Lopez of all people would be so well written. Detective Harlee Santos is a struggling, single mother who works with a group of cops who are efficient at fighting crime but less than ideal in how they do so. They forge partnerships and make deals with street gangs to keep the peace in exchange for a cut of their profits, while turning a blind eye to their activities. When Harlee is busted by the FBI, she reluctantly becomes an informant to take down her unscrupulous yet good-intentioned boss, Lieutenant Wozniak (Ray Liotta), a man to whom Harlee owes her life. While she works to navigate the complexities of her assignment for the sake of her daughter, she struggles with her divided loyalties and doing what’s right. The show delves deep into the characters lives, what makes them tick, and why they do what they do. It’s less about good and bad, and more about circumstances, desperation, and the choices you make when confronted with both. It may only be 3 seasons but it ends with some closure.
1. Luana - As I was reading this book, before the news of the limited series was announced, I swear I could hear a voice so similar to Amy Adams’ narrating, that when I heard she would be the one playing Camille Preaker, I couldn’t have been more happy. She does a masterful job of portraying this broken reporter, trying to uncover a mystery in her hometown while at the same time she uncovers her own scars. As if that wasn’t enough, Patricia Clarkson portrays Camille’s mother, Chris Messina is the out-of-town detective, and, in what many consider her breakout role, Eliza Scanlen plays Camille’s sister. Even if you have seen the miniseries, I also absolutely recommend the book. There’s just a way Gillian Flynn has with her characters and her description of everyday life and society. This story is about a lot more than just the mystery of who killed whom and it’s one that I won’t forget any time soon.

1. LauraLoo - “We're gonna win in the end” boasts the theme song to She-Ra and that they do. No other show in 2020 had as satisfying of a conclusion as this one. She-Ra tells the story of a young girl named Adora who grows up in the Fright Zone, home to the evil horde, along with her friend Catra. One day, while scouting, she finds an ancient sword that only she seems able to wield. As new worlds open up to Adora, she realizes that everything she thought she knew about her life was a lie. Catra, on a quest for power, goes back to the horde while Adora stays in the town of Bright Moon to fight the evils of the world and live up to her true destiny. Every single other character, including Bow, Glimmer, Scorpia, and Mermista is excellent as well with impeccable voice acting to boot. Each season sees our cast of characters battling against ever-growing threats, but ultimately, fighting their own demons. Catra has one of the best redemption arcs ever depicted and her relationship with She-Ra is one for the history books. Check out this epic world; you won't regret it.

We're into the third round, and it's beginning to get tense. Analysis of the second round coming tomorrow, as always, so let's get into the next two polls.

Dynasty took out The X-Files in round two to be here today. The X-Files is no longer the force it was in the competition's early days but it still represents an impressive performance by the CW freshman to progress here. Will it give Person of Interest a shock? The three-time champion beat Firefly last time out as it looks to regain its title. It was at this stage last year it was knocked out.

Now then, this is exciting. Outlander beat Agents of SHIELD in the second round, but it was beaten here last year. It's won the competition but has been out in the second and third rounds. LOST, save for 2015 and 2016, has consistently finished in the top 11 despite not ever making the final, so it will pose a major threat to the 2014 winner.

A reminder of the rules:

2) Vote for your favourite and spread the word with your friends & fans.
3) One vote per person per poll.
4) Comment on what you voted for on in the comments below.
5) Have fun. This is a friendly & competitive competition. Please do not start attacking other fans or fangroups in the comments, because this really isn't what this competition is about.

Round one is complete! We're down to 32 shows remaining. Already the competition has thrown in some shocks — but more on them tomorrow. Right now, let's get into round two...

Dynasty's debut in the competition ended with victory over The Handmaid's Tale. With the Hulu series finishing 62nd last year, it was one of the easier introductory opponents for Dynasty, but these polls still have to be won. Its reward? A clash with The X-Files, which knocked out first-timer Schitt's Creek on the opening day. It has cleared the first hurdle — having failed to do that three times previously, it's always nice to do it — but will have a tougher task today.

Person of Interest subjected The Walking Dead to another first round exit — its eighth in nine appearances; no show has more — reaching round two for the seventh straight year. The former three-time winner gets to face Firefly today, which defeated Bones to get here. Round two is the furthest Firefly has gone since 2013, when it finished sixth. It has been knocked out at this stage three times since then.

Now then, three-time winner Person of Interest, what have you got for us? Last year — following three straight title wins — it was eliminated in the third round by Buffy. Two years after the series ended, it finally lost its monopoly over the competition. It could have some mightily tough opponents on the way to a fourth title, starting today with The Walking Dead. AMC's flagship series has never done well in this competition, escaping the first round only once in eight attempts. Its global popularity suggests that at some stage it will surely perform here. Perhaps today is the day for it to bite back.

Then to Firefly, a one-time bronze medallist in this competition, the show which has built up a cult following and is so often cited as one of the best one-season shows ever made. It's 16 years since the show's cancellation and love for it among fans still burns brightly. Will it continue to do so here? Last year marked the first time it had won a poll in the competition since 2015. Its opponent today, Bones, has featured in all but one edition — one fewer than Firefly has — but has never gone further than the third round, and it has only reached that stage once. Progressing today will be no easy task.
Disclaimer: Please note that the views and opinions expressed in this article are those of the authors and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of SpoilerTV.

In a world where Peak TV is moving away from the 20+ episode structure (no streaming service has a drama show run this many episodes in a season without a long break inbetween and for a reason, and network shows are getting shorter and shorter), network TV increasingly struggles to maintain the success of 20+ episode seasons when the series gets to around seasons three or four. It can be a difficult number to pull off to get that balance between standalone episodes and the ongoing narrative right with "three/four" season curses often being the norm for some shows. It can work for comedy, you need only look at shows like Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Superstore as great examples of this but in dramas it’s a different matter entirely, often hard to get the balance of a 20+ episode season right, and make it interesting and exciting for up to five seasons and occasionally higher - with very few exceptions, avoiding the third or fourth season curses that have struck over and over again. Outside of Person of Interest – there are few shows in recent years that have kept up that quality for such a long time, and although its fifth season had a shortened episode count leading up to the finale clocking in at under 20 episodes, its previous four seasons ran for 20+ episodes, and aside from a fairly average start in the first half of season one (but still with it's fair share of excellent episodes), it quickly progressed into becoming appointment television and at its best, rivalled most awards-favoured television, with seasons equalling if not bettering shows like Breaking Bad.

The concept is a simple one, for those unfamiliar with the series itself. You have a former CIA Agent John Reese (Jim Caviezel) working as a vigilante in New York City with Harold Finch (Michael Emerson) to stop crime before it happens with the help of an artificial intelligence that will tell them that their target – their ‘person of interest’ is about to be involved in a crime but it will not tell them whether it’s the victim or the perpetrator. Most of the episodes have a procedural feel to them, with Reese and Finch working together to asses whether the party under investigation is innocent or guilty, initially avoiding the efforts of Detective Joss Carter (Taraji P. Henson) who is assigned with deducing the identity of the Man in the Suit and later becomes an ally to "Team Machine", who are also joined by a former corrupt cop who has one of the best redemption arcs on TV, Lionel Fusco (Kevin Chapman). If any of this sounds familiar, then chances are it’s because it does – the show is essentially the closest we’ll get to a realistic Batman television show (comparisons not helped by Dark Knight trilogy co-writer Jonathan Nolan acting as the showrunner), with Carter and Fusco doubling for James Gordon and Harvey Bullock and Reese and Finch acting as Batman/Alfred Pennyworth. They even have a Joker-type antagonist/protagonist in the form of Amy Acker’s Root, who remains one of the more compelling characters on the show, initially brought in as an antagonist before evolving along with the show itself and serves as a good example of how late-game character introductions can really help a show.

The main question in this article then, is how did Person of Interest avoid becoming stale and tiresome? It was pretty much the perfect definition of a show that got better and better every season, evolving beyond just Finch and Reese not only introducing new characters but also fleshing out old ones. The small cast grew – eventually former elite government operative Sameen Shaw (Sarah Shahi) joined the team in Season 2 in one of the show’s best episodes “Relevance” (2.16), which acted as a kind of stealth-backdoor pilot for a show that never happened and works as a better pilot than the actual pilot, without the shakiness that most pilots have. For anyone looking to watch the show who missed out on it when it aired, I’d point them to this episode as a good starting point and have sold a few friends on it by this episode alone before. Shaw and Reese act the proto-John Wicks before John Wick was a thing, and the amount of people who they manage to dispatch - without killing - over the course of the series rivals Wick’s bodycount. A crossover would be a dream.

The series tackled complex themes like police corruption and the dangers of artificial intelligence. It split its two plot threads in half nicely, sometimes overlapping them – you’d get a portion of the seasons devoted to dealing with the sinister corrupt organisation HR and a portion of a season developed to the rapidly growing AI plot, at least until its later stages, where escalation eventually leads to a rival AI being brought into the equation, that isn’t as friendly as The Machine - the name given to the one that helps Finch and Reese. It’s Control, and it’s spearheaded by one of the most formidable TV villains ever – John Greer (John Nolan - Jonathan Nolan is his nephew). Greer started out as an MI5 Agent and acts as a perfect foil to Finch, the Magneto to his Charles Xavier. Part of what helped this show so much was that the writers were a firm believer in that a hero is only as good as their villains, and boy did they up their game for the rogue’s gallery that allowed for plenty genre transitions to keep the audience on their toes. We had an intelligent mob boss Carl Elias (Enrico Colantoni), who posed as a teacher to influence the kids of his rivals – introduced in 1.7 (“Witness”) – making his arrival to Nina Simone’s Sinnerman – Peter Collier (Leslie Odom Jr), a leader of an organisation of revolutionaries known as Vigilance, the CIA itself, personified by Reese’s former partner Mark Snow (Michael Kelly) and of course, HR – an organisation with as many heads as HYDRA counting Alonzo Quinn (Clarke Peters) and Patrick Simmons (Robert John Burke) among its members. On top of this you also had the case of the week antagonists, who were most of the time compelling, with the show not afraid to pull a massive twist at the end revealing that the person who they were helping was actually the villain all along, and the team had gotten their numbers mixed up. It often led to some of the best episodes of the show.

Person of Interest balanced its rich rogues gallery with careful character development. Finch and Reese were fleshed out through specific character-centric episodes that turned them into really developed characters. There wasn’t a single main character in this show that was boring, with Carter and Fusco’s arcs being just as engaging. This was in part due to the actors – Taraji P. Henson would go on to lead FOX’s Empire after this series and it’s easy to see why she was cast in that role, as someone who was utterly compelling in Person of Interest, whether she’s tracking down The Man in the Suit or leading a one-woman-war against HR. The pairing of Root and Shaw was one of the series’ highest points making use of the chemistry that Shahi and Acker shared, and by spending time with the characters as well as the story itself, Person of Interest did what few network shows manage to do – it made you care, even at its most mundane, CBS-mandated procedural episodes that don’t connect to the plot at all. Although that’s not to say that Person of Interest didn’t try to weave in some sort of connection to the plot especially in later seasons where it felt almost serialised. The final season does feel rushed at times, mainly due to the fact that CBS cancelled it – but the network at least thankfully had the foresight to give the writers time to plan for a proper, emotionally charged ending befitting of the characters.
Its handling of police corruption was thrilling and the way it mixed in with the feeling of the government always watching made it paranoia-inducing television. The soundtrack helped too, with a mix of the classics like Johnny Cash’s Hurt, David Bowie’s I’m Afraid of Americans, Pink Floyd’s Welcome to the Machine and The Rolling Stones’ Gimme Shelter being used to punctuate key scenes along with a healthy dose of bands like The Kills featuring (both Future Starts Slow and No Wow) and everyone from DJ Shadow to Radiohead, The Who and Jetta. But the original score was possibly even better – helped by the legendary Game of Thrones composer Ramin Dijawadi – and it really gave it a cutting edge feel and is a subject for another article entirely. Only Peaky Blinders can match Person of Interest in terms of song choices, but Person of Interest has that added diversity that isn’t just predominately Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds and The White Stripes.

Whether Person of Interest is paying homage to the gangster thrillers like Martin Scorsese’s The Departed or weaving its own, original storyline – it remained utterly riveting television, a feat made all the more impressive given its CBS home. There was always a subplot within a subplot to keep audiences hooked, and the occasional usage of flashback-heavy episodes that dealt into the origin of the Machine made sure that the show always had something to offer. By not resorting to just standard case of the week episodes and avoiding keeping the best material for the finale of each season but upping its game there anyway, Person of Interest ensured that its respective seasons had plenty of consistency throughout, and not only that, it rectified its mistakes as it went on, learning from what worked and what didn’t as it continuously evolved. If you haven’t seen Person of Interest yet it’s a gem that deserves to be considered among TV's top tier, capable of pulling its punches with the best of them, making a case as to why a 20+ episode season can be just as gripping as seasons with a shorter episode count without having to lose that consistency as the show gets older.
