After investing so much time week after week watching their favourite characters' relationships blossom and develop, seeing the culmination of that love in the form of a marriage proposal makes viewers feel like they’ve crossed the proverbial finish line, experiencing a joy like no other. Regardless if the proposal is a grand gesture, or a simple act of love, it always manages to hit viewers right in the feels, often leaving them with a feeling of euphoria, or in a puddle of happy tears. As we patiently await the next TV wedding proposal, here is a run-down of some of the best character wedding proposals in TV history. </div><div><br /></div><div><b><u>Monica and Chandler, Friends </u></b></div><div><b><u><br /></u></b></div><div><b><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8pAZ-GlK16PX-kmsHMwCUjAgi6mRE7nETU3Y7bpE3w5G28C2t-32OWTI_VCfezXYI1l8SnSYa4kWmHX1BFRtOdtuMvkXR8nZCXU2V6U9EwPaL8e6_im0ZvNPnxyUYc6xw9NLFRjr7RvU5p1WPRX8wpT96qWV19hNSCu8oIkWVi2gKDWpyZWaw/s2048/MV5BMTQzMzA1OTU5NV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwMDY2OTU0MDE@._V1_-1.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1379" data-original-width="2048" height="269" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8pAZ-GlK16PX-kmsHMwCUjAgi6mRE7nETU3Y7bpE3w5G28C2t-32OWTI_VCfezXYI1l8SnSYa4kWmHX1BFRtOdtuMvkXR8nZCXU2V6U9EwPaL8e6_im0ZvNPnxyUYc6xw9NLFRjr7RvU5p1WPRX8wpT96qWV19hNSCu8oIkWVi2gKDWpyZWaw/w400-h269/MV5BMTQzMzA1OTU5NV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwMDY2OTU0MDE@._V1_-1.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div></b></div><div>
In the two-part episode, “The One with the Proposal,” Chandler decides to tell Monica that he never wants to get married, as a way to deter her away from the fact that he is actually about to propose. When her old flame Richard re-appears and lets Monica know that he is prepared to give her everything she wants, including children, Monica is confused and upset because she really does love Chandler, she just wishes he would get it together. Just when Chandler thought that he’d lost Monica forever, he opens the door to her apartment and finds the room covered in candles, with Monica waiting to propose to him. As Monica got down on one knee, she was too caught up in the moment to continue, saying through tears, “there’s a reason why girls don’t do this!” Chandler drops to his knees, takes her hands in his and tells her that she has made him happier than he ever thought he could be, and vows to make her feel the same if she says yes. The scene also had the best laughter through tears moment ever, when Joey, who was waiting on the other side of the door with Phoebe and Rachel yells, “can we come in yet, we’re dying out here!” </div><div><br /></div><div><b><u>David and Patrick, Schitt’s Creek </u></b></div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOfwSR969441UdyWSJiRmFGto4HF1Rt9v952YPxZlnupnKiEnKhdeBhHWW6RC18VCdMDSDpDa0b6mML4FJzq550x60cZUP4fZpIHb6snxjhNvlL7aEv29eSLfQvVZ2JWsAx5zue02hsGa4Yw3-oHNvCN7pAkyi2wjZ22Y1xH1ElQ5eVTSf6FAS/s1014/schitts-creek-propposal-1014x570.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="570" data-original-width="1014" height="225" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOfwSR969441UdyWSJiRmFGto4HF1Rt9v952YPxZlnupnKiEnKhdeBhHWW6RC18VCdMDSDpDa0b6mML4FJzq550x60cZUP4fZpIHb6snxjhNvlL7aEv29eSLfQvVZ2JWsAx5zue02hsGa4Yw3-oHNvCN7pAkyi2wjZ22Y1xH1ElQ5eVTSf6FAS/w400-h225/schitts-creek-propposal-1014x570.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div>Who knew that such polar opposites could actually end up being the perfect match? At first, Patrick’s idea to take David on a hike seemed crazy, considering David is far from being the hiking type. However, the entire scene was a perfect testament to their relationship, Patrick pushing David out of his comfort zone and David going along with it (albeit complaining all the way), to make Patrick happy. During the hike, Patrick gets injured and David needs to let go of his hatred for the outdoors and his selfishness, in order to take care of the man he loves. These two balanced each other out, and it was sweet to see David take on Patrick’s role of being the care-giver in order to tend to his ailing boyfriend. Just when we thought the proposal was dead in the water, David romantically carried Patrick in his arms to the picnic spot and insisted they continue with the picnic. David’s genuine, heartfelt reaction when Patrick got down on one knee made the moment perfect and of course he said yes, how could he not? </div><div><br /></div><div><b><u>Jim and Pam, the Office </u></b></div><div><b><u><br /></u></b></div><div><b><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3WuYsG6SA9vS0PKUszGAl4KXTuURe7OqzWL2-KsHQFFLY_i2iTGm9DCKWniMkrY8TPMYtBkHNnFqF86iv3ArCTkE7XjFLaEPxZGkHA_ewjjY0f8By1Z5mW3z3iLNDLH1roEPpLCbIcSizjk-BvMil7UF2_tSwarhYGLMh3dY3qCBHf9Z_3WfU/s1500/the-office-2-915a63ccde7b4fc394b603a90ccdc741.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="802" data-original-width="1500" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3WuYsG6SA9vS0PKUszGAl4KXTuURe7OqzWL2-KsHQFFLY_i2iTGm9DCKWniMkrY8TPMYtBkHNnFqF86iv3ArCTkE7XjFLaEPxZGkHA_ewjjY0f8By1Z5mW3z3iLNDLH1roEPpLCbIcSizjk-BvMil7UF2_tSwarhYGLMh3dY3qCBHf9Z_3WfU/w400-h214/the-office-2-915a63ccde7b4fc394b603a90ccdc741.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div></b></div><div>Jim and Pam had one of the sweetest relationships on television, even if it took her a little longer to admit how she felt about him. When she moved to New York to pursue her dreams, Jim knew that he could not be apart from her for long. He had an engagement ring burning a hole in his pocket for months and he was finally ready to take the leap. He asked Pam to meet him at a gas station halfway between Scranton and New York. Even though there is a huge rain storm, nothing could stop Jim from making the moment happen, and so he proposed to Pam, in the rain, outside a gas station and she happily accepted. When you love someone so much, it doesn’t matter where the moment it happens, it only matters that it does.</div><div><br /></div><div><b><u>Luke and Lorelai, Gilmore Girls </u></b></div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjNXTdAC5ePsWuYfc5eOTCBrQe8Xl33czdJQCdBkqmhiHQKgwI3iXNThz1GylxkPNpY0brsSZB3gQ8Otl6TcCQ9qUbkDyemXgFw1FlGKNsI6PwDMlMn5RT3nzJUffLfiFljroOZSVhHoGFiS2dAhC536f8MwCCoXZLKKYyAV18rtghP8IOA6DQ/s1200/773b78b1-c044-4c69-8290-b2b4d7bd199c.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="630" data-original-width="1200" height="210" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjNXTdAC5ePsWuYfc5eOTCBrQe8Xl33czdJQCdBkqmhiHQKgwI3iXNThz1GylxkPNpY0brsSZB3gQ8Otl6TcCQ9qUbkDyemXgFw1FlGKNsI6PwDMlMn5RT3nzJUffLfiFljroOZSVhHoGFiS2dAhC536f8MwCCoXZLKKYyAV18rtghP8IOA6DQ/w400-h210/773b78b1-c044-4c69-8290-b2b4d7bd199c.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div>Some of the best proposal scenes in heterosexual relationships have been when the woman proposes to the man, as was the case for Luke and Lorelai. Lorelai was upset because Rory had dropped out of college. Luke immediately steps in, offering suggestions to help and as he is listing off option after ridiculous option, Lorelai realizes how much he loves her and how much she loves him. She interrupts and softly asks him to marry her to which he immediately accepts. She tries to tell him to take a minute to respond but he refuses, he doesn’t need a minute. He knows how he feels. There is no ring, no flashy spectacle, but the amount of love that is apparent between the two in this scene makes their proposal one of the best to date. </div><div><br /></div><div><b><u>Derek and Meredith, Grey’s Anatomy </u></b></div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5ogzVI5D-kOlwRRiw7yMvZCgcOQ09qkzQ2INuoeuWwAzjq8ERVvnCLuwiTrs_ufRrjvLdj3_ANgtj2yAnfaM1vq6JNh8rfjVsoNNEcNYQfQq8SuTYQTLts0AsGvLF8JFw8LQxIs0e-1JIrqjNvzBf_bEoHSS4Pwmp6v__FqqTFcdfxQZ8q6cX/s620/meredith-and-derek-greys-anatomy.webp" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="357" data-original-width="620" height="230" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5ogzVI5D-kOlwRRiw7yMvZCgcOQ09qkzQ2INuoeuWwAzjq8ERVvnCLuwiTrs_ufRrjvLdj3_ANgtj2yAnfaM1vq6JNh8rfjVsoNNEcNYQfQq8SuTYQTLts0AsGvLF8JFw8LQxIs0e-1JIrqjNvzBf_bEoHSS4Pwmp6v__FqqTFcdfxQZ8q6cX/w400-h230/meredith-and-derek-greys-anatomy.webp" width="400" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div>This could easily be one of the most unique proposals on television, and in real life. Derek decorated an elevator at Seattle Grace Hospital with medical scans and reminders of the important moments during their journey together. If that wasn’t romantic enough, Derek’s heartfelt speech about how wonderful Meredith is, including “you say you’re all dark and twisty, but it’s not a flaw. It’s a strength. It makes you who you are,” was swoon worthy. The other aspect that makes this proposal unique, is that Derek didn’t get down on one knee and he didn’t actually say “will you marry me.” To him, those words weren’t needed. He told her he loved her and wanted to spend the rest of his life with her and he knew she felt the same. Unfortunately, these two were never able to have their happy ending, but their proposal was definitely one for the books. </div><div><br /></div><div><b><u>Brennan and Booth, Bones </u></b></div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgA7bGKgRT2fuAfmF4lcqyPdSnq-k5Wh_VqiaSC5KqGanhDJ3rRew8YRxvGc4eYWaYuLydmyirzz9Q_-JJRnuCh8JExzWKodroCGG4a1e07oANxbPKRx_chxLLcQdgDj0YXtOhb1JUfEMqlEeXwNkmeoKwO9BMx-n2P1V2t4d4cZlF6XgK-F6vC/s612/bones-finale1.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="380" data-original-width="612" height="249" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgA7bGKgRT2fuAfmF4lcqyPdSnq-k5Wh_VqiaSC5KqGanhDJ3rRew8YRxvGc4eYWaYuLydmyirzz9Q_-JJRnuCh8JExzWKodroCGG4a1e07oANxbPKRx_chxLLcQdgDj0YXtOhb1JUfEMqlEeXwNkmeoKwO9BMx-n2P1V2t4d4cZlF6XgK-F6vC/w400-h249/bones-finale1.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div>As I said, some of the best marriage proposals on television have been when the woman pops the question and for Brennan and Booth, it was important that she was the one that asked. After eight long seasons of Temperance being adamant that marriage was not for her, this moment was everything that viewers, and Booth, had wished for but never thought possible. Temperance admits that she had been stubborn and she knows that marriage would make Booth so happy, which is all she really wants. Her proclamation, “I love you, I want you to be my husband, I want to spend the rest of my life with you,” was so heartfelt and sincere. Watching Temperance break down her walls for the man she loves was what made this proposal so absolutely perfect. </div><div><br /></div><div><b><u>Nick and Jess, The New Girl </u></b></div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjskR4o_Chd2ThkHUIo340fFfGIUC6upWvs6_PlB_lYQaXHlIMNc7AikVcg0Eo4PjCyo71inm9BQ-juUG3X8WglWgx7p44IrwWVKIxXeefYaYWe0DOUFX3e6JK3z91l-6n1x1f4zOlxhrDhc26zpakZWw9_G3RJSmtJ_mtqtVJ-l1aHLw7LUdse/s1400/New-Girl-Nick-Jess-proposal-season-7.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="700" data-original-width="1400" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjskR4o_Chd2ThkHUIo340fFfGIUC6upWvs6_PlB_lYQaXHlIMNc7AikVcg0Eo4PjCyo71inm9BQ-juUG3X8WglWgx7p44IrwWVKIxXeefYaYWe0DOUFX3e6JK3z91l-6n1x1f4zOlxhrDhc26zpakZWw9_G3RJSmtJ_mtqtVJ-l1aHLw7LUdse/w400-h200/New-Girl-Nick-Jess-proposal-season-7.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div>This proposal almost didn’t happen, after a hilarious set of misses that nearly had Nick give up and go home. Nick had planned what he thought was the perfect proposal, but soon learned that even the best laid plans can go awry and in this moment, that was totally okay. After chasing their dog into a drive-in movie theatre, Jess catches on to what Nick has been trying to do and just as he’s about to give up, telling her he wanted everything to be perfect, she tells him that this moment is perfect because it’s so them. As he gets down on one knee, their friends who were such a huge part of their lives, were there to witness it and that made the proposal even sweeter. It wasn’t the proposal Nick imagined, but it was definitely one to remember. </div><div><br /></div><div><b><u>Sheldon and Amy, The Big Bang Theory</u></b></div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9z8ppSqAQRStQt43hj4P8-REt6A5dD8BCVV_CnJebkONf1ahz5ISqr4y4wF9OUwo8JyifzzJZSwtw8-m3GTH0esG160kmrnncnGJ1R_KydlDlx78D_F1iKbgzvnDMFPoSA5eNE_hKI8FyJ7JhfHEe5aUICfw6o7o4nciQiTwZMPH7GValfYYo/s928/the_big_bang_theory_s10e24_still_embed.webp" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="619" data-original-width="928" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9z8ppSqAQRStQt43hj4P8-REt6A5dD8BCVV_CnJebkONf1ahz5ISqr4y4wF9OUwo8JyifzzJZSwtw8-m3GTH0esG160kmrnncnGJ1R_KydlDlx78D_F1iKbgzvnDMFPoSA5eNE_hKI8FyJ7JhfHEe5aUICfw6o7o4nciQiTwZMPH7GValfYYo/w400-h266/the_big_bang_theory_s10e24_still_embed.webp" width="400" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div>
No one ever expected Sheldon to find love, let alone propose to someone, until he met Amy. Amy’s love for Sheldon is so clear. She is the only one that can tolerate his idiosyncrasies and manage his quirks with patience and in fact, it makes her love him more. Their proposal isn’t anything over the top, he shows up at her door and as she opens it, he is on one knee holding the ring. He pops the question before she can even say anything. Amy is absolutely shocked by the gesture. She had begun to accept that the moment may never happen, so of course she emphatically said yes. Their love is unique and special and the proposal was so absolutely fitting for them. Simple yet incredibly romantic. </div><div><br /></div><div><b><u>Kate and Toby, This Is Us </u></b></div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcqGkrYKspY5IPqz84nM9UaPfLHlXvCr3baHg5qqtJTwOzkwziBQc2kEro6vAHWPONxqzJQxvthWlOm9dK-DJq5cVTwjJrB3sikfntJ4ZNMX4WzNri3eOGMNLzosec6aQg8O9eQY9xBYhZstb8aMKIx4bmS_2hUmWrQfckyzfI4JFIvjSZe_CV/s480/D6zglOWVUAAn1Hf.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="270" data-original-width="480" height="225" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcqGkrYKspY5IPqz84nM9UaPfLHlXvCr3baHg5qqtJTwOzkwziBQc2kEro6vAHWPONxqzJQxvthWlOm9dK-DJq5cVTwjJrB3sikfntJ4ZNMX4WzNri3eOGMNLzosec6aQg8O9eQY9xBYhZstb8aMKIx4bmS_2hUmWrQfckyzfI4JFIvjSZe_CV/w400-h225/D6zglOWVUAAn1Hf.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div>It is not surprising that a proposal on This Is Us would leave viewers in tears, but how could it not with Toby and Kate? They had the most perfectly hilarious relationship and the proposal was just the same. The hilarity being Toby buying $200 worth of mall kiosk sweatshirts to spell out, “will you marry me?” The romantic part was Toby telling super self-conscious Kate that she deserved everything she ever dreamed of, including a big wedding. The icing on the cake for this proposal was that he asked for her father’s permission, even though he was deceased. Toby knew how much Jack meant to Kate, and he knew that this final step would be important in sealing the deal and it certainly was. </div><div><br /></div><div><b><u>Rafael and Jane, Jane the Virgin</u></b> </div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgi-a_ILovmp3l2wLZe6V4WN2U90FGEdt7snG05pBkWbVBcYr45RcwLHmulgL4RHT5TJAx3CiKJ7fhLopgtbTipq4uL1mDDXo4_dyPuWdjtTMjB_ydsYy46pZmtgbM_VzVGI-6SAs5B01wjOY93eQ2qoo6gfZMR6aW_1sepp81ZahJYEzru3zF7/s1600/5aa.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="225" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgi-a_ILovmp3l2wLZe6V4WN2U90FGEdt7snG05pBkWbVBcYr45RcwLHmulgL4RHT5TJAx3CiKJ7fhLopgtbTipq4uL1mDDXo4_dyPuWdjtTMjB_ydsYy46pZmtgbM_VzVGI-6SAs5B01wjOY93eQ2qoo6gfZMR6aW_1sepp81ZahJYEzru3zF7/w400-h225/5aa.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div>Jane and Rafael both wore their hearts on their sleeves, especially when it came to each other. They are the couple that hopeless romantics yearn for, and even though it took a long time for them to find their way to their happy ending, it was absolutely worth every heartache and struggle that came before. Rafael worked hard to change and become the man and father that Jane needed him to be, and he was all in and ready for forever. Knowing how important Jane’s family was to her, his proposal tying into a typical night of playing Loteria with her family, was simple yet perfect. The last card in the game was the ring, and when Jane turns to see Raphael on one knee with a ring in his hands, she bursts into tears and emphatically accepts. The thoughtfulness of the proposal, having every card be a moment in their relationship, was so absolutely perfect. Jane and Raph are one of the most romantic couples in TV history and this scene helped them earn that badge. </div><div><br /></div><div><b><u>Ben and Leslie, Parks and Recreation </u></b></div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpihCuHXKEuZAQY8qZ0rTKDo3FoGB11CroIBTrQYfb2_3BE_XK3Mn21a0Ga8-eHZDXqniJi4sPM4NwzdjnKkUFblEfYx5_IdiTdnNLu08cs9olsa9IOvFkc_vnc26K9Vw9Z1YjQ5gh-nVahyiz-QTYQKRq1Du0sOTUDTv6Z0BmPzjGbf9qFnhe/s620/parks-and-recreation-leslie-ben.webp" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="420" data-original-width="620" height="271" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpihCuHXKEuZAQY8qZ0rTKDo3FoGB11CroIBTrQYfb2_3BE_XK3Mn21a0Ga8-eHZDXqniJi4sPM4NwzdjnKkUFblEfYx5_IdiTdnNLu08cs9olsa9IOvFkc_vnc26K9Vw9Z1YjQ5gh-nVahyiz-QTYQKRq1Du0sOTUDTv6Z0BmPzjGbf9qFnhe/w400-h271/parks-and-recreation-leslie-ben.webp" width="400" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div>
This proposal was perhaps the most fitting to who the characters are. Leslie always had to micromanage situations and be in control, almost to the point that she was preventing Ben from proposing to her. Thankfully, Ben was patient with Leslie and finally made the moment happen by planning a surprise trip home to see her on Halloween, getting down on one knee and popping the question. In true Leslie fashion, she interrupted the moment by telling Ben she needed a few minutes to remember every detail of the moment. Of course, Ben patiently waited and when she was ready, he continued and before he could even finish asking, she happily accepted. These two balanced each other out in every way and it was so nice to see them finally get to this moment. </div><div><br /></div><div><b><u>Lucas and Peyton, One Tree Hill </u></b></div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgW0IhUSefDfvBE77zX0fxabAH5Zi5vwv2BvgoqGKjRWaajtkneqVeyf542x22BSp6tfm02TdiKbDW4gD2SAqwlisZL45eYXcv7PzHmAASKPu-z4bZlZI8TU28_wmw8eZCKtTFn2xehRsXQjd7G5QMlAEgkc-Eb-ZvxKq-1YxaBmSAZ7V2x_03g/s683/Screen%20Shot%202023-08-26%20at%208.22.31%20PM.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="456" data-original-width="683" height="268" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgW0IhUSefDfvBE77zX0fxabAH5Zi5vwv2BvgoqGKjRWaajtkneqVeyf542x22BSp6tfm02TdiKbDW4gD2SAqwlisZL45eYXcv7PzHmAASKPu-z4bZlZI8TU28_wmw8eZCKtTFn2xehRsXQjd7G5QMlAEgkc-Eb-ZvxKq-1YxaBmSAZ7V2x_03g/w400-h268/Screen%20Shot%202023-08-26%20at%208.22.31%20PM.png" width="400" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div>
Lucas and Peyton came from two different worlds, but that didn’t stop them from falling head over heels for each other from the moment they met. Despite a rocky road leading them in different directions throughout the course of the show, they always found their way back to one another and their love never faded. Lucas actually proposed to Peyton four times in total. The first time was shortly after graduation, when she told him she wasn’t ready because she escaped to LA because of the bad memories she experienced in Tree Hill. The second was over the phone when he asked her to elope in Vegas. The third proposal took place in the same hotel room that Lucas proposed in the first time, with the intention of re-creating the moment to have a positive ending. Finally in season 6, Lucas takes Peyton to the spot where they spoke to each other for the first time in Tree Hill. Even though they were already engaged, Lucas got down on one knee and presented Peyton with a beautiful ring and her response, “I am so glad you always knew me,” was absolutely perfect. This couple had one of the most epic television love stories of all time, the fact that it took four proposals to get to their happy ending, is a testament to how much they had to overcome to be together. </div><div><br /></div><div><b><u>Helen and Max, New Amsterdam </u></b></div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilg3tH1cjsJFTsInfeUg00QAvEL_NnLrpBOE9aW7QybYF5-xrvNVr7m2rbQcJIM2eX2vliluKhtsco449_MJr-LIu5jsKCjIvFOgiIxaerUo11H6Bro2nK5YnSz6l9ZX3k375L4XplgfM7azEosZtjOxKIxJzGIif9BIpppZel4CY64pSKaZX2/s620/New-Amsterdam-nbc-ftr.webp" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="350" data-original-width="620" height="226" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilg3tH1cjsJFTsInfeUg00QAvEL_NnLrpBOE9aW7QybYF5-xrvNVr7m2rbQcJIM2eX2vliluKhtsco449_MJr-LIu5jsKCjIvFOgiIxaerUo11H6Bro2nK5YnSz6l9ZX3k375L4XplgfM7azEosZtjOxKIxJzGIif9BIpppZel4CY64pSKaZX2/w400-h226/New-Amsterdam-nbc-ftr.webp" width="400" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div>Despite the disastrous turn that the show took in season 5, Helen and Max will always be one of the most perfect couples in television history. Despite Max being married in season 1, it is clear that he had an immediate connection with Helen, and she was definitely falling hard for the man that was not only her boss, but also her patient. These two were each other’s confidantes and best friends through three seasons. Helen saved Max from Cancer, helped him get through the death of his wife and she saved his life again, after he was exposed during a chemical spill at the hospital. When these two finally professed their love for one another, it was evident that marriage was inevitable. Max had planned a perfect engagement dinner and moonlight walk through New York. The scene of him practicing his proposal in his bathroom mirror was absolutely adorable, and showed just how much he loved Helen and wanted the moment to be perfect. But in another best laid plans go awry moment, Helen is drugged at a karaoke club and is admitted to the hospital. As Max sits by her side at her hospital bed, the two discuss their future and wanting children together. Max is so overwhelmed by his love for her that he decides to propose right there in the ICU, even declaring, “would you make me the happiest man in this whole ICU and marry me?” Helen’s emphatic, repeated “yeses” are the perfect response and it was such a huge “finally” moment for fans of the couple. It is too bad the show runners ruined their happy ending, but that’s a story for another day. </div><div><br /></div><div><b><u>Barney and Robin, How I Met Your Mother </u></b></div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5L9I3zwceziko62mxTixvGzH5K_kn9Vlw7R715hkdqN_6Do5KTrJUtrOqx6ElKDC5BmjXQ9EJeeYDfjFmCmClyiMO8WxVXqoYkd56fERrw1ZQqfMzfmf4Q5nZlmb9ibNQ9dnudmAZrlb1NcOQh2Ohm-vjDbde4VpbNVEXwMbGJr3Vvm4zvASM/s800/barney-proposes.webp" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="532" data-original-width="800" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5L9I3zwceziko62mxTixvGzH5K_kn9Vlw7R715hkdqN_6Do5KTrJUtrOqx6ElKDC5BmjXQ9EJeeYDfjFmCmClyiMO8WxVXqoYkd56fERrw1ZQqfMzfmf4Q5nZlmb9ibNQ9dnudmAZrlb1NcOQh2Ohm-vjDbde4VpbNVEXwMbGJr3Vvm4zvASM/w400-h266/barney-proposes.webp" width="400" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div>The most amazing thing about this proposal is that self-professed ladies man, Barney, went to great lengths to create the perfect moment for Robin, decking out a beautiful rooftop in rose petals and lights. True to his character, Barney fooled everyone by making them believe that he was proposing to someone else, so when he got down on one knee and proposed to Robin, she was genuinely shocked. He made it clear to her that this was the last play he would ever run, even naming it “the Robin.” At first, she didn’t realize the play was referring to her, chewing him out for putting her through this. When he got down on one knee, she immediately softened and was touched by the lengths he had gone through. They didn’t end up having a happy ending, but the proposal was romantic, fitting and memorable.</div><script type="text/javascript">var authorcode='CA';</script>Cristina Almeidahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15611742100252361159noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29964715.post-91509213044910661412023-08-19T12:00:00.000+01:002023-08-19T12:00:00.717+01:00USD POLL : Which of the following is your favorite cancelled or ended TV show that took place in New York?<a name='more'></a><img class='headerimage' width='726px' src='https://files.spoilertv.com/headers/usdp.jpg' />

I have some major life events happening this year, so as a result, I have made the decision to temporarily step back from this feature for a number of months. But don't worry, a great team has stepped up to take over while I'm away and they will keep POTM running as if nothing has changed. But to accommodate for different schedules and time zones, 3 pm ET will be the key start and end time for each round of the feature for now. Currently, I have every intention to return to managing this feature much later this year and at that time if there have to be any changes to the time then I will certainly let everyone know. </div><div><br /></div><div>
<b>Please note that a performer can now only win once per year and a show can only be represented by two winners per year. </b> No exceptions will be made for any performer or show, so please use thoughtful consideration when making your nominations. You will have to fill out the submission form for each nominee you submit. <b>You can submit the document up to 5 times, but each entry must be for a different performer or all of your other nominations will be disqualified.</b> The Top 5 most nominated actresses and Top 5 actors will be placed in the poll next week to determine the Readers' Choice Performer of the Month.<br />
<br />
After you place your nominations take a moment to use the comments section to discuss your nominees with others. Episode number for the nominees is critically important, so discuss with others why you think a performer deserves to be recognized for a certain performance.</div><div><br /></div><div>

It was abundantly clear that the show runners had no idea how to end the series as every storyline felt contrived, forced and out of place. For long time viewers, the decline in the quality of writing has been staggering. Seasons 1-3 were so well written, so captivating and inspiring, that it is difficult to believe that the same writing team was responsible for season 4 and 5. Two seasons that were messy, filled with gaping plot holes, and where character development was non-existent or essentially destroyed. This entire season had viewers feeling as though the writers had no idea where to take the characters that they themselves created. Good writers develop strong character arcs with an endgame in mind. How could these writers truly have no idea what to do with any of the characters? Every episode this season felt like a stand alone leading to nothing, and the series finale was just a bunch of manufactured storylines, thrown together in a half-assed attempt to complete everyone’s character arcs. The problem is, they all felt far from completed. <div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgB8qzn4g-Ut5Wo5Uw6AjGQg--I_84nmw74vo4_1-jZWqnEStmU7kzm7WCO0fE_BaM7Ll9VyeNdjnu66QD4NzzwDdf6sy_NUU0B_BHqT6pVWayLjaW39RknpxuyrdGl7RDNI1Iqw10EYNryUwqAFvOzyL_giihcmZYj_OTTQxOXacUC_fUfDw/s620/new-amsterdam-series-finale.webp" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="420" data-original-width="620" height="271" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgB8qzn4g-Ut5Wo5Uw6AjGQg--I_84nmw74vo4_1-jZWqnEStmU7kzm7WCO0fE_BaM7Ll9VyeNdjnu66QD4NzzwDdf6sy_NUU0B_BHqT6pVWayLjaW39RknpxuyrdGl7RDNI1Iqw10EYNryUwqAFvOzyL_giihcmZYj_OTTQxOXacUC_fUfDw/w400-h271/new-amsterdam-series-finale.webp" width="400" /></a></div><br /><div>In all honesty, it is clear that the writers had no idea what to do with the show without Freema Agyeman, who was ultimately proven to be the heart and soul of the show. Regardless of what the show runners want viewers to believe, the writing was terrible before Freema left and it continued to get worse after. In fact, the entire season felt like the writers were executing a vindictive vendetta against Freema for leaving the series. Her character was written off in a way that was spiteful and cruel and instead of just letting her story end after the first episode, the writers continued to drag her name through the mud time and time again. And for what? The show creators continue to use the excuse that Agyeman left the show and there was no other way to write her out. That is a pathetic and ridiculous statement for any network television writer to make. Fanfic writers have come up with many better ways of writing her character out. More importantly, instead of honouring Helen Sharpe’s legacy on the show, her character was vilified in an attempt to get viewers to turn against her. Even Dr. Kapoor was sent off with a beautiful funeral, where everyone spoke touching words about him. Why could the same not have been done for Dr. Sharpe? Having her die would have been a much kinder fate than what was done to her instead. Using Helen in the finale was absolutely pointless and an obvious, blatant attack on her character that felt vindictive and cruel. The drug trial had no bearing on any other storyline and had not been mentioned at all previously. So what exactly was the point of bringing it up now? Are we to assume this was the same drug trial from season 2, where Helen gave up half her department to Valentina Castro, found out Castro was tampering with the trial, then did what she could to force Castro to resign while keeping the reputation of the hospital and Max’s treatment intact? Do the writers have any recollection of previous storylines? Do they think viewers would just forget that such a powerful moment happened in 2x16 between Helen and Max because of that storyline? When you have to resort to retconning your own stories, it is safe to say you are a bad writer. </div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEir1DrvhXfSd6pRZPpFt5OCWIBz-dC_Nr9ysWyBSmLh4-l8ABRVvHlHqSnReCd62I1EeD7uvaHwnpJVrQOmdMqZ6auNViXlI3yto7Mtgh-MaSEaQRGEH8Sd1YkIih_EwC9-OR6z7iXUHicucT126TXRfsjEdzB2ugaDM23xcfHlMSbzNzgATA/s854/new-amsterdam-512-ben-max-wilder-854x570.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="570" data-original-width="854" height="268" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEir1DrvhXfSd6pRZPpFt5OCWIBz-dC_Nr9ysWyBSmLh4-l8ABRVvHlHqSnReCd62I1EeD7uvaHwnpJVrQOmdMqZ6auNViXlI3yto7Mtgh-MaSEaQRGEH8Sd1YkIih_EwC9-OR6z7iXUHicucT126TXRfsjEdzB2ugaDM23xcfHlMSbzNzgATA/w400-h268/new-amsterdam-512-ben-max-wilder-854x570.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><div>What's worse, is that the writer's essentially had Max and Wilder accuse Helen of conducting a racist trial, just so they could use it as a way for them to come out as heroes and affirm their love for each other. Not only did they insinuate that a woman of colour was racist, but both Wilder and Max stated that she was unethical as well. The writer's spent the season trashing Dr. Sharpe’s image as a person, only to use the finale to try and paint her as a horrible doctor, too. I have never seen such a blatant character assassination in all my years of television viewing. The show creators and writers can spew whatever excuses they want about their reasons for doing what they did, in an attempt to gaslight viewers, but the writing is on the wall and there is absolutely no way to deny that this was done with cruel intentions. Having Max declare that the study, which was approved by a WOC, was “white’s only” so that he could be the white saviour, absolutely reeks of bigotry. The clinical trial storyline was solely used to solidify Max and Wilder's relationship, which was pointless, since they did not even remain a couple in the end. It is also laughable that Max and Wilder both stated that they would not have done the same for each other, because it is unethical, yet we watched at least four instances this season alone where both made very unethical decisions for the patients in their care. So now ethics matter? The continued comparisons between Wilder and Sharpe, and the degradation of Sharpe to elevate Wilder, a white woman, reeked of discrimination and was a disservice to both female characters. What exactly was the point of having Dr. Wilder in the final season? To be a love interest for Max? A replacement for Helen? She literally served no other purpose and the show could have gone on without her and quite frankly, no one would have noticed. </div><div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQkjrpGafdHRv63yqe5351S3S1vmJftimOStLgKVqeDTZ0NQja212QzVrNioZ9qBoYNB_G6kNKK90aqTCFWZ95mz8O-JVANTWj2MHwDjrPsLTOCfRqsXdPYUW6Jju8iOPUapxUOwpO4vNWd8yuj3SOhggTPdctzVcs1G4sT95dDqB06c_Sig/s1500/NEW-AMSTERDAM-513-04-011723-f6fe7c7f28aa48abb5eea6b6c0a653ec.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1000" data-original-width="1500" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQkjrpGafdHRv63yqe5351S3S1vmJftimOStLgKVqeDTZ0NQja212QzVrNioZ9qBoYNB_G6kNKK90aqTCFWZ95mz8O-JVANTWj2MHwDjrPsLTOCfRqsXdPYUW6Jju8iOPUapxUOwpO4vNWd8yuj3SOhggTPdctzVcs1G4sT95dDqB06c_Sig/w400-h266/NEW-AMSTERDAM-513-04-011723-f6fe7c7f28aa48abb5eea6b6c0a653ec.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div>The final episode begins with Max relaying a heartfelt speech to the staff of the hospital, and viewers learn that he is moving to Geneva to work for the World Health Organization because according to him, he has done everything he came to do at New Amsterdam. This move came completely out of left field, since in the previous episode, Max was completely committed to the hospital and he spent all of season 4 being torn between staying in London with Helen and being home at New Amsterdam. The other concerning piece with this storyline, is that the doctors were all happy for Max and supported his decision to leave, but when he left with Helen, they all tried to force him to stay and even tried to talk him into leaving Helen to remain at New Amsterdam. So are we to believe that Max is allowed to leave, as long as it is not with Helen? In the end, Max hands the keys to the hospital to Wilder and tells her that there is no one else he’d rather leave it to. Why couldn’t this be the case in season 4, when he had made the decision to leave with Helen? Sadly, all of Max’s character development went out the window half way through season 4 and of course he is unable to leave the hospital so easily. He disappoints Luna for the millionth time by missing the mermaid parade that she desperately wanted to go to, so that he can play the saviour at the hospital one last time. Max’s character degradation is quite shameful. He went from a man who always put the hospital first, before his wife and daughter, to finally making the choice to choose himself, love and his daughter by moving to London, only for him to come right back to New Amsterdam as medical director, once again putting the hospital first. What exactly was his storyline this season? Being a lovesick puppy on the rebound, chasing after Wilder? He certainly didn’t spend any time at the hospital making an actual difference. In the end, he is painted as a hero when it is revealed to viewers that Luna, now an adult, has taken over New Amsterdam as medical director, praising her dad for his hard work and inspiration, even quoting his famous line, “how can I help?” Is that Max’s hero story? That he chose a hospital above all of the loved ones in his life and now Luna is destined to serve the same fate? </div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSetiHpZzs--onO7ESyhrUKDwMGf8I3ZZZSAcZlXkUaHRBL39PdSvR347_eC6CuU5rRREg0lN1wZCD2NkHJfsSWhQWDErQqlSm9Uh8zySRhGKELrUuZraVCa9_C9j14IKhL2l7-UM1pYkUTVAs8pIcJ619S1MYUYklGA7_GETX3I_mK1d45A/s800/NUP_200080_03263.webp" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="534" data-original-width="800" height="268" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSetiHpZzs--onO7ESyhrUKDwMGf8I3ZZZSAcZlXkUaHRBL39PdSvR347_eC6CuU5rRREg0lN1wZCD2NkHJfsSWhQWDErQqlSm9Uh8zySRhGKELrUuZraVCa9_C9j14IKhL2l7-UM1pYkUTVAs8pIcJ619S1MYUYklGA7_GETX3I_mK1d45A/w400-h268/NUP_200080_03263.webp" width="400" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div>The one story in the finale that had potential, was the case of a Ukrainian refugee who needed a complicated, life saving surgery or she would die, ultimately leaving her only son an orphan in a strange country. This could have been such a poignant story, had the writers taken time to develop it. Instead, they used it as a way to bring some familiar faces back for the finale, Cassian and Agnes, just to have them on camera for less than a minute while they assisted with the surgery. Why bother bringing back such beloved characters, just to have them appear for a few seconds and not have any dialogue? It was completely pointless. </div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNeoIBsF1-8jqNjzn93bfIHiBdhRhCkwA7tST_HF3F6hOcoQFCvRAChvHx-rJWR6AF8ZIcqbYyQhKBC16LCl9MpsPNNYJgpq7P04MbwiEesru5OJ1dZS4wG_sE_Vn19ZGljmWN_J_SjFA3fcRClt0jlsPJRxXP4rg9n5J-cVyEP2NB3XdmtQ/s770/best_crop_1303787ec6e393120d8d_Alejandro_Hernandez_as_casey_scott_-new-amsterdam-512_-_NBC.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="513" data-original-width="770" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNeoIBsF1-8jqNjzn93bfIHiBdhRhCkwA7tST_HF3F6hOcoQFCvRAChvHx-rJWR6AF8ZIcqbYyQhKBC16LCl9MpsPNNYJgpq7P04MbwiEesru5OJ1dZS4wG_sE_Vn19ZGljmWN_J_SjFA3fcRClt0jlsPJRxXP4rg9n5J-cVyEP2NB3XdmtQ/w400-h266/best_crop_1303787ec6e393120d8d_Alejandro_Hernandez_as_casey_scott_-new-amsterdam-512_-_NBC.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><div>The episode also featured flashbacks of the leads, providing insight into their younger selves and revealing the reasons why they chose to become doctors. It seemed ridiculous to only get this information in a series finale. This is information that viewers needed and begged for a long time ago to ensure proper character development, but I digress. Through the flashbacks we learn that Elizabeth was bullied by children who didn’t think she could be a doctor, because she was deaf. Even her own brother suggested she try a safer career. In the end, she defied the odds and became a successful surgeon. Lauren chose to become a doctor after going on a bender and witnessing a homeless man die right in front of her, and she was unable to help. Lauren’s present day storyline of hijacking an ambulance to take her apartment hunting was completely selfish and ridiculous, and it culminated in her finding a fixer upper that she would try and make her own, in order to have a fresh start. Her story ended with her sister joining her at an AA meeting, the two of them joining hands. None of this says much for character growth, but I guess it could have been worse. </div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFDg9Fgmksu_tPaZXuXbOXz0BCGJy8lYSCb_JMylHCygAlmXYKX-8nvg2PFixNv14oVlpahj-Cu9YKknAnoJ8ZucvSS8SAu7nTiUx1GbZlrTC-YR26A1EpebkHXf7WbligsC7TYNWYYqJSISwacK1DdVL1SlOg0OoJ8fhV9nE3YlmmvbpyIw/s1500/NEW-AMSTERDAM-513-06-011723-a5491cc56cf14da5921064746b78ba5e.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1000" data-original-width="1500" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFDg9Fgmksu_tPaZXuXbOXz0BCGJy8lYSCb_JMylHCygAlmXYKX-8nvg2PFixNv14oVlpahj-Cu9YKknAnoJ8ZucvSS8SAu7nTiUx1GbZlrTC-YR26A1EpebkHXf7WbligsC7TYNWYYqJSISwacK1DdVL1SlOg0OoJ8fhV9nE3YlmmvbpyIw/w400-h266/NEW-AMSTERDAM-513-06-011723-a5491cc56cf14da5921064746b78ba5e.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><div>Iggy’s flashback made sense. As a young child, the adults around him lacked boundaries and confided in him things that were inappropriate for a child to deal with. This would have been great information to learn back in season 1. It would have helped provide much needed backstory, so that viewers could understand why Iggy spent most of the series trying to figure out who he was and what he wanted in life. Perhaps then viewers could have empathized with Iggy instead of coming to loathe him. The final Martin/Iggy storyline was completely rushed and obviously done for the sake of giving these characters a happy ending. It also diminished all of Iggy’s character growth. Iggy and Martin had decided to divorce and move on. Iggy was no longer good for Martin, and he realized that he needed to better himself before he could enter into another relationship. Having Iggy choose himself and work on creating a healthier life for himself would have been a great ending for his character. Instead, the writers had Iggy attempt to woo Martin all over again like they had never met in the first episode, then jump to them being re-married in the second. Talk about a whirlwind of confusion and trauma for their children who were innocent victims in this ridiculous storyline. </div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkSbOuh3_Ea5Zj4od9Qi9ohM1ZizGcgJsgD5LxClt_Ap-Sw7ZdqcHpHYpyBJVxAUKhZ5cRlt1Ylvv78lmkdR_4Y1EGNTkkcmX2TOQRoeNq7xAn0mgcliXrBXtxTQNUqv-DreuGLPt4wayP4Ez3U3NRYGFN7-uL5ohBQ0EWxVG_DlZrfftzqw/s619/new-amsterdam-series-finale-1.webp" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="420" data-original-width="619" height="271" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkSbOuh3_Ea5Zj4od9Qi9ohM1ZizGcgJsgD5LxClt_Ap-Sw7ZdqcHpHYpyBJVxAUKhZ5cRlt1Ylvv78lmkdR_4Y1EGNTkkcmX2TOQRoeNq7xAn0mgcliXrBXtxTQNUqv-DreuGLPt4wayP4Ez3U3NRYGFN7-uL5ohBQ0EWxVG_DlZrfftzqw/w400-h271/new-amsterdam-series-finale-1.webp" width="400" /></a></div><br /><div>Once again I have to say, poor, poor Floyd. The writers have struggled to give Floyd a proper storyline all series. In the end, the only remaining black character just happened to be the one who grew up with an abusive father, perpetuating yet another racial stereotype. At no point during his attempt to reconnect with Horace, was it mentioned that Horace was abusive. Turning him into an abuser in an attempt to round out Floyd’s character arc made very little sense and the optics were just horrendous. Ultimately, Floyd ended up living his dream life with Gabrielle by his side. His final scene was him and Gabrielle happy and in love, at a dinner table with all of their family members including Horace. Although it appeared that Floyd got everything he wanted in the end- a connection with his father and the love of a black woman, it was absolutely shallow. Not to mention the fact that this man gave up the rights to his daughter. The show runners claimed that Max was “heroic” for choosing his daughter Luna in the end. So what does that make Floyd? And is someone truly a hero for doing the right thing and putting their child before their career? Make it make sense. </div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlHCdVydyvYfGnp1eQMptdC9eRHx7RmFK1fDuXV7QmQH_u_0PeNAidc76Am7hzp-NtYV1D9121fRtpc8psAyP9PHOBJwOmPNTeQVMY3o_ZQ6PIAEoFHS7RPu_I96K15wb8t-1weHZlcRUGdWLENNAFV90dZm6OSZkXjbW8MDDNDF5Ez0yYvg/s582/luna-goodwin-new-amsterdam-513-3.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="388" data-original-width="582" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlHCdVydyvYfGnp1eQMptdC9eRHx7RmFK1fDuXV7QmQH_u_0PeNAidc76Am7hzp-NtYV1D9121fRtpc8psAyP9PHOBJwOmPNTeQVMY3o_ZQ6PIAEoFHS7RPu_I96K15wb8t-1weHZlcRUGdWLENNAFV90dZm6OSZkXjbW8MDDNDF5Ez0yYvg/w400-h266/luna-goodwin-new-amsterdam-513-3.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><div>Overall, the finale was exactly what was expected after a disastrous season. There were no moments of nostalgia for the good ol’ days of the show, there was nothing to make me wish it wasn’t the end, and I ended up not caring at all about the characters that I once loved and waited on baited breath to watch every week. It is very sad that this is how it all ended, considering its beginnings. One thing is for certain, I will not watch anything produced, created or written by any of the New Amsterdam show runners and writing team, and I don’t have to look further than Twitter to know that I am not the only one. I would love to hear your thoughts on the series and its ending. Were you satisfied with the conclusion? I have tried every week to be fair and neutral, despite my feelings on the decisions made by the writers and show runners to vilify a character that made the show what it is today. It is now impossible for me to offer any positive praise for a show that has so blatantly made the decision to ruin a beloved character for no reason whatsoever. Though we do not know the real reason Agyeman left, and we may never get that answer, the truth is that it doesn’t really matter. The writers and show runners have made it very clear that instead of focusing on ending the show on a high note, they are instead going to use every opportunity to tarnish the name of Helen Sharpe in any way that they can. The episode is titled “Falling,” and I can’t think of a better name for it. The downfall of New Amsterdam has been unlike anything anyone has ever seen on television. Just when you think it can’t get any worse, it does. The downfall of this show needs to be studied, it truly does. How does a show that was once so beloved, become one that viewers despise? <div><br /></div><div>Regardless of why Freema Agyeman left, she was a series veteran. She was part of a strong ensemble cast, and her immense talent helped New Amsterdam become a hit TV series. Freema stole the hearts of so many viewers and became a huge part of why people watched the show. It was her innate chemistry with Ryan Eggold that steered the direction of the show into a storybook love story between Max and Helen. Though the Sharpwin dynamic was powerful, Helen was a strong character on her own apart from Max. She was a protagonist who fought for her patients, for what she believed in. She endured childhood trauma, uprooted her life to start over, faced hardship after hardship, literally lost her ability to speak and through it all viewers rooted for her. They wanted her to overcome her trauma and experience the good that life has to offer- motherhood and a lasting romance. Helen was beloved. There were so many ways that the writers could have written her exit. Instead, they chose to vilify her. To have her abandon their white saviour at the altar via a handwritten letter circa a generation that has long since passed. That decision by the writers alone, angered fans to the point that millions of them stopped watching. The show is now lucky to generate 2 million viewers an episode at best. The vilification of Helen should have ended there, but it didn’t. The show runners decided that instead of using their 13 remaining episodes to develop the storylines of the 3 remaining leads, they should instead spend it further vilifying Helen and destroying whatever character development Max has had throughout the series. </div><div><br /></div><div>The entire winter premiere centred around Max’s choice between Wilder and Helen, in a love triangle that absolutely no one asked for. After seeing Helen on TV and receiving a text from her asking to meet up, Max decided that he needed to get away to clear his head. On a whim, he decides to take his head doctors on a country retreat. Don’t even get me started on how unbelievably ridiculous a storyline this was. In what world would a medical director be able to take all of his doctors away on a retreat at the drop of a hat, especially in today’s world where hospitals are extended beyond their capacity? Regardless, Max spent the episode pondering what he should do and receiving advice from everyone including Wilder, who tells him he should meet up with Helen so that he can truly know where his feelings stand. In the end, Max goes to the restaurant to meet Helen, sees her through the glass doorway and walks away without even going inside, ultimately choosing Wilder and sealing it with a kiss. Clearly the show runners realize the impact of Freema leaving and how their decision of how to write her off has had on its viewers. They spent the past few weeks baiting fans into thinking Agyeman was returning, in desperate hopes of increasing viewership for the last few episodes. What a ridiculous slap in the face to true New Amsterdam fans who were smart enough to realize that the footage of Freema was old and that she was not going to be coming back. It was almost like a cruel joke. Baiting Helen fans into watching the episode, just so they could watch as her character was vilified, trashed and stomped into the ground, even being compared to a drug and a deathly allergy by characters who were supposed to be her friends. That is perhaps what is the most upsetting. After being a source of strength for all of the lead characters, they spoke about her like she was a plague on their lives. The writers didn’t even have the decency to have Max at least speak to Helen prior to making his decision, not that it could have happened since the footage of Agyemnan was old. The Max that viewers have come to know over the last 5 seasons would never have just let Helen go in the first place, let alone not have a discussion with her before deciding to move on. Over the series, Max has been developed as an empathetic man who fights for what he believes in and the people he loves and we are expected to believe that he would just let Helen go without at least talking to her? It is as if the writers disregarded the immense impact that Helen had on Max’s life, seemingly forgetting that she saved him, cured him of his cancer, helped him through the darkest moments at the hospital, took care of him, and mothered his daughter. The writers tarnished all of that, and her legacy on the show has become the evil woman who left Max and his daughter and then came back to twist the knife in one last time. What was the point? There was no reason for any of this except to attempt to erase the legacy of Helen Sharpe from the show one last time. Even Kapoor received a better send off from the show. He was killed off but his legacy remained intact. Why couldn’t they do this for Helen? They literally silenced a woman of colour yet again. They brought her back without her being given the opportunity to speak her peace. They vilified a woman of colour so that their white saviour could move on with a white woman. This may not have been the intention, but the optics of this are horrendous.</div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh97ZqcEgMaIjG-w-8NEIAaCNhAMiEmcpiqWbbn9Se-FoJZSJ0Q1KJ4lMvKA72BKinoPtkqEso4mNzfgwxZMddjXYR5pqPhG9RpWSziXqe4Y7mg_gEikqee3aE1UCucy5yWuSHT0I9ITY1mxrDLrJgoLG1rmGeu4A7OwHQkdSnQENeGahTDRQ/s1000/NUP_199753_00308_lowRes.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="667" data-original-width="1000" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh97ZqcEgMaIjG-w-8NEIAaCNhAMiEmcpiqWbbn9Se-FoJZSJ0Q1KJ4lMvKA72BKinoPtkqEso4mNzfgwxZMddjXYR5pqPhG9RpWSziXqe4Y7mg_gEikqee3aE1UCucy5yWuSHT0I9ITY1mxrDLrJgoLG1rmGeu4A7OwHQkdSnQENeGahTDRQ/w400-h266/NUP_199753_00308_lowRes.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div>Is this what the show runners wanted for the final season? For Max to revert back to who he was in season 1, erase all of his character growth and not spend a single episode focusing on the good he could be doing at the hospital? Why did the show runners not spend the remaining 13 episodes, establishing Max’s legacy at the hospital? Isn’t that what New Amsterdam is all about? To have the final season be based on an ill-timed romance is just ridiculous. Season 5 had the potential to be a fresh start for the show. The writers could have focused on what made New Amsterdam special to begin with, which is the work done with patients and wanting to change a broken system. It is laughable that Max’s tagline is “how can I help?” when he hasn’t helped anyone in a long time. When was the last time we saw him actually work with a patient? Max also has a troubled history with his parents that was mentioned a few times in earlier seasons, but was never brought up again. This season would have been a great opportunity to dive into what happened with Max’s parents that caused him to pretty much disown them. They could have ended Max’s character arc by offering closure about his family. There was so much potential to end this season by bringing in some of the magic of earlier seasons, but that opportunity was squandered away when they decided to spend time on a transparent ploy to destroy the character of Helen Sharpe rather than salvage a show that once stole the hearts of so many. And what about the other lead characters? It looks like closure for their storylines will be rushed or won’t happen at all seeing as how the last two episodes focused solely on the Wildwin will they/won’t they. </div><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4k7Pv6bxYTQji3cDvdlr1FPB44lourE9hnzjxFIUlcg9EOu91r47YKVz6o1YiWcn0vmXuFxg8zEMe-xQoh6ATsdPFAR-GW5_LFEzksxaA2VJP8kmxdewySd2X1zCNWRA2Aa1heS2FWAtn-0DhxwGWJVtzz6PUV6whFtMxZPs_b2T8SLR9Vw/s1000/NEW-AMSTERDAM-Season-5-Episode-11-Falling.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" data-original-height="667" data-original-width="1000" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4k7Pv6bxYTQji3cDvdlr1FPB44lourE9hnzjxFIUlcg9EOu91r47YKVz6o1YiWcn0vmXuFxg8zEMe-xQoh6ATsdPFAR-GW5_LFEzksxaA2VJP8kmxdewySd2X1zCNWRA2Aa1heS2FWAtn-0DhxwGWJVtzz6PUV6whFtMxZPs_b2T8SLR9Vw/w400-h266/NEW-AMSTERDAM-Season-5-Episode-11-Falling.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div>Floyd…poor Floyd…he has been dealt a bad hand since last season. He hasn’t had a solid storyline since season 3. This season was supposed to be about him reconnecting with his dad but that turned out to be him diagnosing his dad with a mental illness, forcefully committing him and then all of a sudden he isn’t seen again on the show. Now they are pushing Floyd into what can only be described as a cheap romance with a travel nurse, whose character they have spent no time developing at all. Do viewers even know her name? I certainly can’t remember it most days. There has been no development of this relationship on screen at all. In this episode, Floyd was about to have sex with her in his office until they were interrupted, and that is the most we have seen of them together since they introduced her character. Are viewers supposed to guess that they have already established the fundamentals of a relationship? Trust? Commitment? Love? Floyd deserved a better ending to his story. I truly hoped he would get at least that this season, but I should know better by now than to have any expectations for this show. </div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzjLXvSojvze_pF0rLlc3Jkr0JUH0Rgh4RUvwTXZffg2K-RPH_u5CoypzsEwNgqkRsKj7NSR746lLicqFEdoyn09T1TBFjyZftk1u38nWx6LihH4yLNzdp4PzDeVz0s05uGuslMimDcj0mFmk2pWtLX1ypYi-UGnB4NlC05LjjRWESgF6RDw/s1000/NUP_199753_00865_lowRes.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="667" data-original-width="1000" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzjLXvSojvze_pF0rLlc3Jkr0JUH0Rgh4RUvwTXZffg2K-RPH_u5CoypzsEwNgqkRsKj7NSR746lLicqFEdoyn09T1TBFjyZftk1u38nWx6LihH4yLNzdp4PzDeVz0s05uGuslMimDcj0mFmk2pWtLX1ypYi-UGnB4NlC05LjjRWESgF6RDw/w400-h266/NUP_199753_00865_lowRes.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div>Then there is Iggy. There is no part of Iggy that makes me think he is an outdoorsman of any kind, but apparently he is since this is the second storyline that has him traipsing through the woods having epiphanies about his life. This time, he spent the episode in a hallucinogenic state after sustaining a head injury. He was met by a younger version of himself, who spent time giving Iggy a verbal lashing, with the theme being that Iggy needs to let things go so that he can move forward. Iggy came to the realization that he should sign the divorce papers, only to ask Martin to start dating again. There is no way that Martin should take Iggy back. He has shown no redemption since the cheating incident, and has definitely had no personal growth. In true New Amsterdam fashion, here lies a storyline that leaves viewers wondering, what was the point? What was the point of separating Iggy and Martin and having Martin present Iggy with divorce papers if they are just going to end up together in the end? It makes no sense whatsoever. Iggy has childhood trauma that led to disordered eating. None of that was ever truly resolved. Would it not have made sense to focus on resolving his trauma in the final season? That would have been a better way to close off his character arc, but I digress. </div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJAcJ_rfN8PipdGyH-6WVZh_ab-m2m1ylKs_xlCq3FqSH_4KLvbSENF1MTEHvXisNHHBfqEO8C-3yNbDLZlTxm-5HnViiZlyjG_0Whis1OaFJrVXxC4LNqGeIfw5DPs0uDq_GQUgeoJxakat0Sdszy5xtwiTjItWv8hn2dQEHGJ1qGXAv6JQ/s580/new-amsterdam-season-5-episode-11c-580x387.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="387" data-original-width="580" height="268" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJAcJ_rfN8PipdGyH-6WVZh_ab-m2m1ylKs_xlCq3FqSH_4KLvbSENF1MTEHvXisNHHBfqEO8C-3yNbDLZlTxm-5HnViiZlyjG_0Whis1OaFJrVXxC4LNqGeIfw5DPs0uDq_GQUgeoJxakat0Sdszy5xtwiTjItWv8hn2dQEHGJ1qGXAv6JQ/w400-h268/new-amsterdam-season-5-episode-11c-580x387.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div>That leaves us with Lauren. I have no idea what the conclusion of her storyline arc will look like, since it has been all over the place this season. They brought her sister back and killed off her mother, perhaps as a way for Lauren to realize that she needs to focus on her sobriety. Having Lauren become a sponsor for another addict is a good step in terms of character growth, but there is so little time left, how will this lead to a happy ending for a woman who has endured trauma after trauma since last season? </div><div><br /></div><div>A two-hour episode is all that remains of this dumpster fire and I for one could not be more relieved. It has been literally painful to watch a show that I once treasured, crash and burn to the ground. Hopefully the networks have paid attention to the downfall of New Amsterdam, and think twice before taking on any new shows by these show runners. The TV world would be a better place if we never heard from them again. I’d love to hear from the remaining viewers of the show- what are your thoughts on the episode? NBC dropped New Amsterdam’s fall finale in the form of two episodes in one night. As usual, there was so much going on and neither episode connected with one another, making the choice to air them both on the same night a little puzzling. Don’t get me wrong, I’m grateful to have gotten even closer to the finish line for this one, but it was a bizarre move nonetheless. There was one common thread between the two episodes, however. They both proved once again that the writer’s have no clue what to do with any of the characters anymore. Any type of creativity that was in the writer’s room is long gone, and the characters that viewers used to love, have become unrecognizable. <div><br /></div><div>The biggest issue with the episodes, and the entire season frankly, is the show runner’s need to push Max and Elizabeth together, regardless of the fact that there is zero chemistry between them and nowhere near enough time to do it justice. It’s not even that they are rushing this pairing to the finish line that is the issue, it is that they have basically turned Elizabeth into Helen in every way right down to her clothing. They have even stooped so low as to re-use lines and scenes that were golden Sharpwin moments, instead of writing them a story of their own. In the first episode, Max asks Elizabeth why she said no to the date and the two of them confess their feelings for each other. Elizabeth explains that while she appreciates that Max is learning ASL, he is not fluent in her language. He doesn’t understand her inner thoughts and she doesn’t want someone who can’t fill in the empty spaces. The whole moment between them was about as entertaining as watching paint dry, and the fact that they had this conversation on the bench that Sharpwin shared many a special moment on, was just pitiful. </div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGx_yo_a6pRFPsvR1b4LiSTHEK69doXmAPrYhkhVBOZ55wLtQekGzPFfI02ka1E49Tb3vBwoAAmefUfo0TrTaaFNjNnW9KETV6gp-b43xWn38LLLLRND9SYoNrSq0FDN0aIDKN2MzCjzqGY6ELtuRN2kcizjNbrnuthJETfshGngCXi6rY2g/s1000/Max-speaks-with-Elizabeth-on-New-Amsterdam-Season-5-Episode-9.webp" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="667" data-original-width="1000" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGx_yo_a6pRFPsvR1b4LiSTHEK69doXmAPrYhkhVBOZ55wLtQekGzPFfI02ka1E49Tb3vBwoAAmefUfo0TrTaaFNjNnW9KETV6gp-b43xWn38LLLLRND9SYoNrSq0FDN0aIDKN2MzCjzqGY6ELtuRN2kcizjNbrnuthJETfshGngCXi6rY2g/w400-h266/Max-speaks-with-Elizabeth-on-New-Amsterdam-Season-5-Episode-9.webp" width="400" /></a></div><br /><div>In the second episode, Elizabeth meets with her former mentor Bev, played by Marlee Matlin. Bev has come to receive Cancer treatment from Elizabeth, but she also has a proposition. She is opening a school for the deaf and she wants Elizabeth to run it. This moment with Bev is exactly the kind of storyline Elizabeth needed and deserved this season. The writer’s should have focused on Elizabeth’s talent as a deaf surgeon and capitalized on how she can use her talents to make New Amsterdam a more inclusive environment, while doing what she loves. Instead, they decided to reduce her to a love interest and doctor with questionable morals and ethics. Elizabeth is honoured that Bev wants her to take on such an important venture, but she has doubts, because she is not a teacher and surgery is her passion. Elizabeth goes to Max for advice, and walks in on him having an ASL lesson. It was nice to see Elizabeth call Max out for only learning ASL because he has a crush on her. Max is the Medical Director of the hospital. He should want to learn ASL because he employs a deaf doctor and because it’s the right thing to do. This scene led to yet another recycled Sharpwin moment. Max tells Elizabeth he is learning ASL because she doesn’t have limits, the people around her do, and then says, “I see you,” which is exactly what he said to Helen after the decon shower when he finally admitted his feelings for her. What a degradation of an iconic Sharpwin moment, and a further slap in the face to viewers who are already resentful of this pairing. </div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlVYCTvZjgCoWXERpoiiFqSvAb_uL3fT84_hh7uVIqattQtBBK5ECKbNv9te8tj7vQZS-56Vy47bxlQ-dtM1mVBVgUOp-d52R2Zq03HVrSJTznAkSAK0CmXUNizIdTDtOJLhYz7nUG3-zZtpaQHYVh3u8WYlB11Qi7ufKp3y2ObQp_YuwkJg/s1000/NUP_199645_00348_lowRes.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="643" data-original-width="1000" height="258" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlVYCTvZjgCoWXERpoiiFqSvAb_uL3fT84_hh7uVIqattQtBBK5ECKbNv9te8tj7vQZS-56Vy47bxlQ-dtM1mVBVgUOp-d52R2Zq03HVrSJTznAkSAK0CmXUNizIdTDtOJLhYz7nUG3-zZtpaQHYVh3u8WYlB11Qi7ufKp3y2ObQp_YuwkJg/w400-h258/NUP_199645_00348_lowRes.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><div>At the end of the episode, Elizabeth tells Bev that she is turning down the job. Bev tells her to find the person who makes her feel seen and not let them go. Suddenly, everything Elizabeth said in the previous episode about feeling the empty spaces wasn't important anymore. Nothing changed from when she made her impassioned speech until now, so clearly they were empty words. Elizabeth runs down the main corridor to find Max, and asks him to take her home in a scene that was yet another rip-off of a legendary Sharpwin moment, the season 3 finale. Elizabeth was even wearing the same jacket that Helen wore, only in a different colour. It doesn’t get more ridiculous than that. Just as Max is about to kiss Wilder, he hears none other than Helen’s voice on the television in the lobby. She is in New York promoting the NHS’ Cancer research. Max is clearly thrown from seeing her, and that’s where the episode ended. I’m not sure what’s more insulting, that the show runners thought Sharpwin fans would forgive everything they did to Helen’s character and come back, or the fact that they thought we would be too dumb to notice that the footage of Helen was old footage from season 1. The show runner’s pathetic need to keep using Freema to draw viewers, just proves how the show cannot survive without her. The way that the writers vilified Helen and tarnished her character was bad enough, but giving viewers this ridiculous love triangle that no one asked for, is just another way for them to further assassinate Helen’s character. Schulner stated that he wants fans to know that the show is so much more than Sharpwin. So why throw Max into another romance? Why couldn’t Max spend season 5 actually experiencing some character growth? Instead, he’s become a man that needs a woman in his life for emotional support and let me tell you, no one asked for that. If Schulner thinks this ploy will draw the Sharpwin fans back, he can think again. People are tired of being used by Schulner for what he calls “challenging TV.” No one is playing his games anymore. </div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEvFQ_UB2iEawPxxoDFzFdJyaPFWBZzKbZCFEn53fvsVLq-4-dDb6lMM67uQO3iBJX4ZhkcgRweRLZlvweu_7FWAHDCNkzUajfwp4nANb7h-rY9xjw0pTqFr2bZ-gxKpLyDx3-ts3ZrbiPwKtpLamLTPci-l-5D2UTBKKM0ECuxoGo_JrtAA/s1000/NUP_199645_00812_lowRes.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="671" data-original-width="1000" height="269" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEvFQ_UB2iEawPxxoDFzFdJyaPFWBZzKbZCFEn53fvsVLq-4-dDb6lMM67uQO3iBJX4ZhkcgRweRLZlvweu_7FWAHDCNkzUajfwp4nANb7h-rY9xjw0pTqFr2bZ-gxKpLyDx3-ts3ZrbiPwKtpLamLTPci-l-5D2UTBKKM0ECuxoGo_JrtAA/w400-h269/NUP_199645_00812_lowRes.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><div>Max has become a man who is incapable of doing anything but lusting over a woman. He has spent no time doing anything to help the hospital, and these two episodes were no exception. Max spent the first hour bent out of shape about Patient Satisfaction surveys as a way to distract himself from thinking about Elizabeth. Does he not have any important work to do? He is the Medical Director of the largest public hospital in the USA and he needs to find “busy work?” If this wasn’t bad enough, his storyline in the second episode felt completely out of place and super bizarre. He took over for an attending doctor in the ICU who was away, and worked with a young team of doctors who we have never seen before and will likely never see again. Again I ask, what was the point? One of the doctors was struggling with the death of a patient. The patient passed away after she had gone home after her shift, and she was having difficulty letting go of guilt. It was an important message, but again. Why do this with a guest character whose name no one likely remembers, I know that I sure don’t. It is clear that the writer’s have no clue what to do with Max, except to have him pine over Elizabeth. Max has had no character growth whatsoever in five seasons, and he has now become unlikeable which is sad, considering he is the lead and the reason that so many viewers fell in love with the show. </div><div><br /></div><div>I have serious concerns about the way this show handles storylines with patients suffering from mental illness. Once again, a patient was placed on a Psychiatric hold without a diagnosis or cause for such extreme measures, and once again, Floyd was at the centre of it. He ran into a young lady who was pregnant, Olivette, at the elevators. He was trying to direct her to the appropriate ward, so he asked her who she was there to see. She told him that she wanted to induce labour and have her baby now at 24 weeks, because she is an addict and is putting the baby in danger because of it. Floyd should have taken Olivette to the Obstetrics department, but he decided to handle it himself, with Gabrielle at his side. Why would a cardiac surgeon even attempt to manage this case? It was completely inappropriate and absurd. Floyd takes Olivette for an ultrasound with Gabrielle, and they determine she is less than 24 weeks and therefore cannot deliver the baby. Instead of actually listening to Olivette and trying to understand her needs, he decides to put her in a psychiatric hold. Is this his new go-to when he doesn’t understand someone’s needs? To commit them? I cannot believe that the writers chose to have him do this again, knowing how controversial the storyline with his father’s diagnosis was. Young, black pregnant women already have a hard enough time getting the treatment they need, the last thing they need is more stigma attached. Thankfully, Gabrielle managed to talk some sense into Floyd and demanded he listen to what is best for Olivette. This led Floyd to set up a circle of care for Olivette, which included employees at the hospital attending appointments with her. This, of course, is not realistic and does not solve the other social issues that Olivette is facing, most importantly, her addiction. This entire storyline was completely bizarre and mishandled. It is truly sad that after 5 seasons, the writers still do not know how to write a proper storyline for any of their characters, at least one that is not loaded with controversy. All of the characters that were beloved by viewers before season 4, have now become unrecognizable. Floyd used to be a man that put his family first and wanted so badly to have a traditional family of his own. Now, he has all but abandoned the mother that he loved so much to chase after a father who abandoned him when he was young and he is coming out of a polyamorous relationship, only to enter into what is reminiscent of a high-school fling. The biggest problem with Floyd’s storyline, is that as he struggles through his abandonment issues with his father, he has a daughter of his own living in Colorado that he all but abandoned himself. Do the writers not see the irony here? </div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_jRmXP6hJdPVCB4W9XheH9nuEDdNJz9dFZj38_enu-fNFIwt3Cy1n0J0yfjS3xyuatfMQOpz3ROVc0SkODhg31_0p7dAaJR1x252sG5PwwXEJg3qoDfcLsLJk4dNTvJnb5KKZDIHPXipYQj2RXMBjrLeM-aKHk_GLO6IzX3oWtxBf09Fl0Q/s1000/NUP_199511_00174_lowRes.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="667" data-original-width="1000" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_jRmXP6hJdPVCB4W9XheH9nuEDdNJz9dFZj38_enu-fNFIwt3Cy1n0J0yfjS3xyuatfMQOpz3ROVc0SkODhg31_0p7dAaJR1x252sG5PwwXEJg3qoDfcLsLJk4dNTvJnb5KKZDIHPXipYQj2RXMBjrLeM-aKHk_GLO6IzX3oWtxBf09Fl0Q/w400-h266/NUP_199511_00174_lowRes.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><div>That brings us to Lauren. For the first 3 seasons, she was a tough woman who knew what she wanted and did whatever it took to get it. Now, she lives in constant misery as she tries to swim to the surface of the unending trauma that continues to weigh her down. Lauren has taken the brunt of the trauma dumping and it is getting out of hand at this point. I thought this was the season of healing for her? Instead, it is looking like she is going to end up alone without any support from loved ones. I have never hid the fact that I have serious concerns about the way this show treats its female characters, and Lauren’s entire storyline is unnecessary torture at this point. It is the last season. How does Lauren’s arc resolve when she is in the midst of getting hit from all sides by never-ending trauma?
The first episode last night had her helping a young brother, Avi, and sister who lost their parents two years ago due to COVID, and have been living under the radar because they are afraid of getting separated by Child Protective Services. The young girl suffered head trauma and needed surgery, which required permission from a guardian. Avi tried to make up an excuse about where his parents were, but Lauren immediately figured out there were no guardians in the picture. Instead of asking Avi where they were and allowing him to confide in her about his situation, she immediately opted to call Child Protective Services, breaking whatever trust she had developed with the young boy. Lauren is a mandated reporter, but that doesn’t mean she couldn’t have taken a minute to find out the complexities of what these kids had been through before jumping the gun. Lauren has developed a pattern of imposing her trauma onto her patients, and that’s exactly what she did here. She assumed that Avi was struggling with the trauma of losing his parents, and could not give himself or his sister the proper care because of that. She let Avi know that CPS would be taking his sister and that he would receive support from the Psychiatry department at New Amsterdam. Avi is, of course, upset. For a 17 year old boy, he seems to have been dealing with his grief as well as a child could and if it were not for this accident, he had been managing to take good care of his sister. Why is it up to Lauren to make these decisions anyway? Should this not be up to CPS to decide? Just because Lauren is dealing with lingering trauma from her past with her mother, doesn’t mean that Avi is. People deal with grief and trauma in different ways. It is completely unethical that she would be allowed to decide the future of these children. </div><div><br /></div><div>At the end of the first episode, Lauren and her sister met with a lawyer for the reading of her mother’s will. She is dealt with a shocking blow, when she finds out that her mother left all of her money to her sister, and not her. Yes, Lauren and her mother had their problems, but why would her mother completely exclude her from the will? If this wasn’t bad enough, the second episode really kicked Lauren when she was down, from start to finish. Her sister ended up in the ER because she overdosed and it all spiraled down from there. Vanessa barraged Lauren with the most despicable emotional warfare I have ever seen. It was truly difficult to watch. Lauren discovered that Vanessa overdosed in front of the hospital on purpose, because she knew she would end up in Lauren’s care. Her sister also dealt her another blow by confessing that their mother wrote Lauren an apology note, but she threw it away. When her sister falls back into a coma, Lauren is torn between continuing to care for her sister who is nothing but cruel to her, or finally cutting ties for good. Lauren knows she needs to let Vanessa go, as she will never be able to get out from underneath Vanessa’s black cloud if she doesn’t. What is the purpose of all of this trauma for Lauren? Why must her resilience be tested every single week? Where is Lauren’s catharsis? </div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWR5QdGjn3BLSaUKN04E_PO-ofUQcDMYg9HOlU_X3kfj7f7FMDGJAG_qwfaKQ_bYvsVGP2L2FsLHnQbJSAkHbx2Agx0Q8SkuTV7gfbZ2HpLJlAC4V9OATtB-i3hNEYtFcZ-ZU5S2hgZdiGsUSLqFYUZHjPxPJmT3iJxcieiC9_9S5rP8WGUw/s726/new-amsterdam-episode-509-the-empty-spaces-promotional-photo.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="483" data-original-width="726" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWR5QdGjn3BLSaUKN04E_PO-ofUQcDMYg9HOlU_X3kfj7f7FMDGJAG_qwfaKQ_bYvsVGP2L2FsLHnQbJSAkHbx2Agx0Q8SkuTV7gfbZ2HpLJlAC4V9OATtB-i3hNEYtFcZ-ZU5S2hgZdiGsUSLqFYUZHjPxPJmT3iJxcieiC9_9S5rP8WGUw/w400-h266/new-amsterdam-episode-509-the-empty-spaces-promotional-photo.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><div>Another character that has become completely unrecognizable from the first two seasons, is Iggy. It is difficult to find a redeeming quality for him lately, but last night we saw a glimmer of season 1 Iggy and I have to say, it was nice. The Patient Satisfaction surveys came in, and Max felt that the questionnaire for Iggy’s unit wasn’t focused enough on quality of care. Max decides a change is in order and changes the questions on the survey. Iggy needs to work on his time management, as several patients are having to wait weeks or even months for appointments. Max decides to make the Psych department open-access, meaning people can walk-in for appointments at any time. This of course leads to chaos and Iggy receiving a 5% score on the new PSS. The problem with this, and I cannot believe the Medical Director wouldn’t know this, is that the Psychiatry unit is funded based on their Patient Satisfaction survey scores. A 5% score would mean that Iggy would lose almost all of his funding. He marches into Max’s office, tells him that he is messing with something that he does not understand, and demands Max allow him to change things back to the way they were. It was nice to see Iggy fight for his patients and his unit, and I enjoyed seeing him put Max in his place. The insufferable Iggy of the last two seasons didn’t go far, though. After his day at the hospital, he went to his house and presumptuously kissed Martin, leading to them sleeping together.
In the second episode, the kids walk in on Iggy and Martin in bed together and assume that their parents are back together. Iggy, of course, encourages the kids' excitement, even though he hasn’t even had a conversation with Martin about what last night means for their relationship. Iggy’s brazen moves prove fruitless, because Martin does not want to get back together. He has changed, and doesn’t want to go back to the person he was when he was with Iggy. Martin tells Iggy that he wants to go ahead and file for divorce. All I can say is, way to go Martin. He deserves so much better than a man who projects his issues onto him and blames him for all of the problems in their relationship. Iggy isn’t deserving of a second chance, and I am glad that Martin realizes that. </div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVkG00FEL5Welgcd7sEmvUUKum3qNA5TRd6FxG9Xr5plip4nqC87_RWZh8fF4-e0K4WcdF2X6ws2oT5gR6XxAKsIscdnFMY4LOEcYVIJIr4Az658j2Y_1C7S_HlizeCbmmuTDsiC3m2CZgQ2VMIDOhYR4-NUU-r7e9otzNwQB8-IFyyWdyLA/s726/new-amsterdam-episode-510-dont-do-this-for-me-promotional-photo.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="483" data-original-width="726" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVkG00FEL5Welgcd7sEmvUUKum3qNA5TRd6FxG9Xr5plip4nqC87_RWZh8fF4-e0K4WcdF2X6ws2oT5gR6XxAKsIscdnFMY4LOEcYVIJIr4Az658j2Y_1C7S_HlizeCbmmuTDsiC3m2CZgQ2VMIDOhYR4-NUU-r7e9otzNwQB8-IFyyWdyLA/w400-h266/new-amsterdam-episode-510-dont-do-this-for-me-promotional-photo.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div>Three more episodes remain before the end of the series, and they can’t come soon enough. It is difficult to imagine how much more damage can be done in just three episodes, but I am not looking forward to finding out. Over to you, New Amsterdam viewers.
