Baloji Tshiani’s Omen is a fascinating magical realism film that portrays an interracial relationship between a couple played by Marc Zinga and Lucie Debay, returning to Koffi’s parents to encounter traditions and the generational gap that has affected the portrayal of magic and sorcery, and how it’s perceived. The film explores different generations and different genders; and suspicion and prejudice on all sides, borrowing influences from The Warriors and Uncle Boonme and His Past Lives among many other things but ultimately retaining its own identity as a 90 minute study of the occult in an unorthodox, brave way that’s sure to be a hit. I loved it.

Baloji’s background as a Belgian hip-hop artist showcases his creative flair and the visuals look appropriately music-video like, I love the sheer amount of creativity and diversity in the costume department across all the stories at play here as the film really explores the culture of Brussels, Kinshasa and Lubumbashi in all its detail. I enjoyed every story equally, as it looks at Koffi’s mother and his sister, in addition to a gang war – which whilst mean the emotional gut punch of the film would have perhaps worked better as a short story, it achieves its goal admirably – there’s a lot of Mad Max: Fury Road in its thunderous pace and magical metatextual elements which really add to the chaotic nature of the film drawing among familiar parental encounter tropes and amplifying them to terrifying levels.

Anyone who is curious or at least interested in mysticism will be right at home in Omen, or natively, Augure. The seasoned portrayal of mysticism betrays Baloji’s experience – and the flashy visuals really compliment this film. Critics will say “I didn’t get it”, and it's "style over substance", but screw them - there's more to this film than that. Research adds context to the narrative and really showcases how superstition clashes with the modern world, providing a rich texture with a variety of languages at play – its central themes of leaving a richly spiritual culture and returning to it older and removed but not a stranger to it is explored in an inter generational way that will leave you curious, enthralled and captivated. This is how a debut is done, and I’ll be seated for Baloji’s next feature for sure – especially if it’s as vivid and as self-assured in its own imagery as this, and at only one hours thirty minutes it never overstays its welcome.

One really interesting narrative choice is that it will be accompanied by a musical album, combining the two mediums for an ultimate mystical experience and I can't wait to see what further imagery Baloji evokes.

The Summer with Carmen is a meta narrative that takes place on a Greek Island during well; the summer – at Athens’ queer beach, 30 something Demonsthenses offers to help his best friend and wannabe filmmaker Nikitas draft an idea for a feature debut. This follows what happens with Demonsthenes reaching out to his ex, Panos, and the film explores the dynamics between them both, and a dog – Carmen.

It's a metatextual twist on the queer movie experience – there’s a beautiful backdrop to it all that has a similar objective to Rotting in the Sun but without the shock value; there’s more than a healthy amount of cock and balls in this and yet – it feels natural; male full body representation on cinema is a rare thing and it’s fantastic to see The Summer with Carmen explore all kinds.

The film is aware of its humour and what it’s trying to be – the two leads are discussing who should play them in a film that will inevitably win Nikitas an Oscar and Chris Hemsworth is suggested for the role of Demonsthenses, who hasn’t been in a gay film, prompting the suggestion of Andrew Garfield to play Panos. Now that’s a film that I’d watch – maybe in the inevitable American remake? The charm of Yorgos Tsiantoulas and Andreas Lampropoulos is hard to ignore however, and they get along as best friends: the film wittly introduces Demonsthenses as the Hero and Nikitas as his best friend with text-over-screen titles usually reserved for location introductions, as director Zacharias Mavroeidis subverts all the cliches.

Two friends brainstorming a screenplay gives an insight into the creative process as they use it as a really clever framework to explore their life and key events within it. It’s funny, witty and extremely self-aware of what the film is trying to achieve, helped by a wonderful look and feel of the piece from Thodoros Mihopoulos, cinematographer who makes The Summer with Carmen look like a dreamy summer holiday that you never could have imagined. There are times as always when films like these reach a point when they become too self-aware, but that is not the case with The Summer with Carmen. It treads a knowing line and succeeds in doing so.

Robot Dreams is an emotionally charged; entirely wordless animated film about a dog who lives in Manhattan and is tired of being alone. The endless montage of him seeing other people’s happiness and being left out of it reaches a tipping point when he sees an advert for a robot best friend – which he promptly orders and builds. The robot comes alive; and the both bond instantly – becoming inseperable, set to the backdrop of 1980s New York. It’s a moment of wonder and amazement for the dog, a man’s best friend, who’s never had companionship in a world without men and only animals – think Zootopia, but better. However, when tragedy strikes, Dog is forced to abandon Robot at the beach. Will they ever meet again?

The film explores loneliness in a way that strikes a chord with anyone who’s ever experienced being alone, and then made friends through chance happenstance. It’s got friendship building; a romance of waiting – the film explores the loneliness of being in the city, one yet among millions – and the real impact it can have on people especially in the 1980s before the advent of social media and wider connections. When Dog loses Robot he wants to keep making friends despite a sense of longing for Robot – it strikes the feeling of being sad and alone and finding the perfect match in a way that few films ever replicate so well. Think a platonic Past Lives, and it’s so bittersweet in the way it goes about Robot Dreams it’s hard not to fall in love with both its characters. Dog and Robot are so instantly likeable, the innocence of Robot makes him endearing, and the fact that not a single word is spoken between these characters yet the bond is felt almost immediately speaks wonders to their friendship: and the sheer passion and care put into the film by Pablo Berger really makes it shine.

Yes the 102 minute pacing is slow; wrapped up in somewhat repetitive dream sequences that never fail to be heartbreaking, but the sorrow is interspaced with moments of joy as we watch Dog’s attempt to make new friends to replace Robot. He strikes up a loveable if brief friendship with Duck; and I love the attention to detail that makes his tail wag when he’s happy. The 1980s portrayal of the Big Apple makes it really fascinating – such a unique creation from Pablo Berger; lowkey style replaced by substance that draws from Sara Varon’s graphic novel. We’re back instantly in a world of Boomboxes and Earth, Wind and Fire – rarely has ever a film’s soundtrack been used so well to define the essence of friendships, but I left Robot Dreams with September stuck in my head for days and you will too.

There can be a queer reading of Robot Dreams although Robot and Dog are not explicitly gendered, the wholesomely innocent relationship between them is never broken and a line is never crossed. We instead get to experience them witnessing the wonderful summer of New York City – sightseeing, exploring the subway, roller-skating through Central Park – all these things are beautifully illustrated yet cannot last. The power of visual storytelling reigns supreme – and the feat earning Robot Dreams an Oscar nomination against all odds in a world of Disney films instantly makes it something worth celebrating. It might even; behind The Boy and the Heron, be the second best animated film of this year’s slate and has enough broad appeal to be seen - and enjoyed by - by all.

Our Son is a heartbreaking divorce drama through the lense of a queer couple who realise that their marriage is falling apart. It’s tense, emotional and powerfully acted, a real stage-actor’s dream, with Billy Porter and Luke Evans playing central characters – the husband/husband team who find themselves torn apart when differences reach their point, and Porter’s well-liked Gabriel realises he’s fallen for someone else. Evans’ Nicky, in desperation puts their remaining relationship in jeopardy by lashing out in protection for their 8 year old son, Owen – as both learn what it means to be a father.

It's a complicated drama; we’ve had tons of these films over the years with Baumbach’s Marriage Story being a comparison point. Our Son doesn’t do anything new for a divorce drama other than make its two leads a queer couple but at the same time, Bill Oliver’s dynamic is such a welcome change it makes it easy to overlook any sense of familiarity. The film explores the elder generation of queers who came out when they were younger and a lot of the arc that Nicky is undergoing explores him wishing he had more freedom when he was younger; and lived in a more tolerating society. There’s a lot of heartbreaking emotional cues that make Our Son stand out; and the film scores bonus points by simply just letting gay men be parents – it’s sadly a rarity and that alone makes Our Son worth seeking out – those expecting the normal clubbing excess won’t find it here.

Porter’s delivery of their own arc is incredible and the performances by both them and Evans are really actor’s performances of the best possible kind, uniquely human and emotionally charged. For all the familiarty in the storyline of parents fighting for their children’s divorce Our Son manages to use what you know to tell it in a new way – breathing new life into the genre. It’s heartbreaking. You will cry – especially if you relate to anything at play here. The way the film defines Nicky and Gabriel from the off sets you up for emotional heartbreak: they’ve been together thirteen years, Gabriel has sacrificed eight years of his acting career to raise a son, Nicky has pooled all his money into the house for them that he’s likely now going to have to sell to fund a divorce. Their friends are shared between them and it will create a wedge; and what’s worse is that their son Owen (Christopher Woodley) is going to have to choose between them: Gabriel having the instant edge as the stay at home, likeable parent. Nicky has a long way to go.

Heated emotions flare over the custody of Owen which fuels the narrative of Our Son and the almost family-friendly drama feels like it tackles plenty of important things to say that a lot of people tend to overlook in the wider media when it comes to representation of queer people on screen. What kind of gay men do Nicky and Gabriel want to be now that they’re divorced? Our Son almost gives them the second chance to come out again – defying gendered expectations in a way that makes this film commendable for its understanding of the community. Their chemistry may be on thin ice but then that is baked into the plot – these characters don’t have instant chemistry anymore, they aren’t on the same wavelength – they aren’t in love with each other. No matter how they try.

But the spark has not gone from Our Son. The screenplay may be blunt in getting its point across – but its triumph comes from Luke Evans and Billy Porter being talented enough to sell even the least subtle of lines.

The Coen Brothers have been on different paths for a while. Joel Coen gave us the towering definitive Macbeth adaption The Tragedy of Macbeth for AppleTV+, and now it’s Ethan Coen – “directed by A Coen Brother”, the Drive-Away Dolls trailer teases, and we’re back in Burn After Reading territory, just like that – for a caper that modernizes Thelma & Louise for a fearsome firecracker of a queer drama focusing on Jamie and Mariam, two best friends, who find themselves on a road trip to Tallahassee that winds up in trouble when they inherit a mysterious package meant for a group of inept criminals.

It's classic Coens caper; the inciting incident picked up by a series of misunderstandings. After another breakup with a girlfriend; Jamie agrees she’s done with love, and gatecrashes Mariam’s impromptu road trip. The car they both hire is a dodge – but a mistake by Curly, the car-hire owner, leads to plenty of trouble for them both and a duo of hitmen after them. It’s a comedy of errors – with the deadpan expressions of Margaret Qualley and Geraldine Viswanthan doing much of the heavy lifting. The movie itself is aided by the b-movie sexploitation that avoids having the leery gaze of male directors; despite Coen being in his 60s making the film, and it gives both Mariam and Jamie a sense of agency. The sleaze that dominates Drive-Away Dolls makes its status as a major motion picture with a wide blockbuster release these days all the more impressive, aided by its offbeat 80 minute runtime the film doesn’t really cater to a need to be self-important. It isn’t trying to be “the definitive queer film”; it’s just trying to be a film – sex and nudity on screen is seen in a way that fits the vibes that the film is going for without feeling invasive, with the end result being a 70s drama set in the 90s made in the 2020s, that allows for a truly oddball experience.

If you go in expecting something serious you’re in the wrong place; but Drive-Away Dolls delights because of its lack of serious. The contrast between Marian and Jaime is instant from the word go, Jaime is a free spirit, Mariam is buttoned-up, and despite all the supporting cast – Matt Damon – whose role in the third act really elevates the story to brazen new heights, Pedro Pascal, Colmon Domingo, Joey Slotnick, Beanie Feldstein, comic genius, Bill Camp and CJ Wilson – this is the Qualley and Viswanthan show, both actors two of the most talented of their generation in one of the most fun films of the year so far. Its slow start ramps up the tension as it progresses – culminating in a truly bizarre and offbeat ending that will leave you in stitches. A riot.
Perfect Days is a love letter to the ordinary, solitude and the working class. There’s no big event – there’s no big plot, hell – the description of this film alone would put people off: you follow an elderly man Hirayama on his routine cleaning toilets throughout the day. But little events threaten throw his routine off course: the arrival of his niece, and his colleague’s obsession with a love-interest. In the hands of Wim Wenders; who gave us Anselm earlier this year in the UK, this celebration of the common folk becomes something special: an artform, thanks to the talented performance of Koji Yakusho.

We get to see what Hirayama’s routine looks like when he’s at work and not at work – his passion for music and books outside of work dominate his day to day life; and we get to see the people who wonder in and out. The music plays a big part of Perfect Days, as an escape; as a way to vent out your emotion – Patti Smith and Lou Reed both dominate the soundtrack, with a love letter to cassette players and music collections. There’s a generation gap between Hirayama and pretty much everyone; his current colleague, who isn’t as committed, friendly, and begs him for money so he can spend time with a girl who he’s pining after. His niece too – is a child of iPods and Spotify, yet Hirayama asks her where Spotify is as though it’s a physical place in Tokyo that he can go and visit. Because that is all that Hirayama does – and there is nothing wrong with that. There are hints at his past; his confrontation with his sister suggests a history – she’s visibly disgusted to learn that he cleans toilets now; but Perfect Days’ celebration of a life spent doing just that shows there can be something of pride found in even the most common jobs. This film does for toilet cleaning what Paterson did for bus driving.

The details of a daily life are told with simplicity that most films strive for but few dare to achieve. We get to see the interior of Hirayama’s flat – his work environment, the people he encounters on his job, one by one – and the cycle restarts again; asking the question: is he happy with this life he’s chosen? Is he content? He certainly has dreams, aspirations – the shots skyward of Tokyo and his life spent cycling through the urban sprawl suggest that. But Perfect Days is at the end of the day, a celebration of a job and a life lived without shame: there are interpretations that you can read into him being gay if you want to do add even more depth to the film – and it’s easy to see that he has frustrations with the past.

The visual language at the heart of Perfect Days is key to unpacking the film’s simplicity and its subplots are simple and myriad enough to be interesting despite – or perhaps because of, the relative mundane lifestyle of them all. Next time is next time but right now is right now – nothing quite beats the perfect atmosphere of a commute set to a perfect song; a perfect day – and Wim Wenders’ routine of a silent life well lived sets out not to condemn or to judge, but instead to celebrate.

Monster is an angry, devastating film from Japanese director Hirokazu Kore-eda, one of the most humanist directors working in the business at the moment. Here; he takes charge of a multifaceted story that propels its way forward with the agency of a split narrative: we open with a building burning, a mother and a son watching from their apartment. The mother, Saori – sends her son, Minato, off to school – but it quickly becomes apparent that something is not right. He comes home shy, abrasive, and throws himself out of the car on a journey home from being found in the middle of a tunnel at night. Saori’s instinct is to blame Mr. Hori; his teacher – played by the calm but quick to anger Eita Nagayama – so rushes to school – only to be met with the stranglehold of bureaucracy. But it quickly becomes apparent that there is more than meets the eye to both Saori and Mr. Hori – and Minato is coming into his own, discovering his sense of self – we learn through all three chapters, each told from the perspective of these three characters – how perception and anger can unfold differently, and how these characters can react to the world that shaped them.

At its core the film shares a dynamic between two boys – Soya Kurokawa’s Minato and Hinata Hiiragi’s Yori. It’s skilfully acted by both involved as we’re forced to witness the horror that Yori must experience on a day-to-day life as a victim of bullying, unable to do anything about it – with Minato facing the choice between his friendship with Yori and the peer pressure of his classmates, who are ruthless to the both of them. The abject horror of what we cannot tear our eyes away from makes Monster a stark departure from even Shoplifters as Kore-eda lets his emotions get the better of him with a plea for acceptance and tolerance from all, no matter their age. Kids can be cruel – think Lukas Dhont’s emotionally charged Close, one of the best films of 2023 – for a similar comparison, and this film is just as devastating if not more so – a quiet bid for freedom symbolised by their escape in a train carriage that’s off its hinges. Themes of death, rebirth and reincarnation punctuate Monster – which has a quiet way of creeping up on you and making you cry when you least expect it. The film bluntly has its characters ask “Who’s the Monster?” – is it them, fighting for love in a world that doesn’t accept who they are? Is it a teacher? Is it the rest of society? There’s a lot of grand themes at play in Monster that are highlighted with understated nuance.

What a way to unfold the narrative – Monster at first sends you on a murder mystery, but quickly promises to be so much more. It’s a game of lies and misheard truths that aims for a Rashomon-style narrative – and succeeds so much because of this. Film of the year.

Bob Marley and the Wailer’s magnum opus is a classic of more than just reggae, and there are few more inspirational music figures than Marley himself. Bob Marley: One Love is the latest film to attempt to do justice to a music icon, but the result, like the Whitney Huston and Queen biopics before them; falls short as it goes for a family-approved, sanitized take on the legend that ultimately has nothing to say, remembering Marley as an apolitical icon as opposed to a revolutionary. Biopics are the preferred genre of Reinaldo Marcus Green – who gave us King Richard, previously Oscar nominated – but just as with that film it’s a film that coasts by on the strength of the performances of its leading stars, the extremely talented Kingsley Ben-Adir and Lashana Lynch, who deserve so much better than the hackneyed, undercooked, cliché-ridden material that uses Walk Hard: A Dewey Cox Story as an instructional manual as opposed to something to avoid.

We open in 1976 when political strife in Jamacia almost leads to Marley’s death for wanting to headline a unity concert, and after a harrowing shooting attempt he finds himself in London getting involved in the punk scene and reinventing himself as European tour artist – slowly working on the recording of Exodus. This is a film that centres much of its main story around the recording of that album but lets the pace down by flashbacks to his early life in Jamacia, never giving the main storyline the chance to breathe before we’re interrupted with an ongoing arc with his absent father, and how he met Rita, his wife.

It's a testament to the skills of Kingsley Ben-Adir that he’s able to make Marley such a magnetic figure. The performance is a masterstroke – charismatic and he boasts enough screen presence to totally buy into the concert scenes, that are brilliantly lit by a talented crew. The lighting of these concert scenes; and then again of Jamacia and punk-era London, presented here as a dystopia, are among the film’s strongest assets: technically it looks good. Vibrant, colourful and alive – Bob Marley: One Love feels destined to propel Ben-Adir to even greater fame than before. It’s just a shame that the script is so pedestrian.

There’s no tension here; yes it’s a true story but there’s no suspense even in the initial shooting when Marley is almost killed. It feels safe. There’s no depth – the characters are thinly drawn and the Wailers are rarely given the space that they need to develop. The complexities of Marley’s life just aren’t featured and are glossed over, and the authenticity that the producers go for as a result, doesn’t feel earned or honest. It’s a watered-down, safe affair with little to shout for – a smoother pacing structure could have really helped this one but the flashbacks and the safe storyline that’s unafraid to pull punches make Bob Marley: One Love a misfire despite its good intentions. We need to be looking more at Priscilla, Elvis and Rocketman as examples and less at well; everything else.
You know it's a good year for cinema when Greta Gerwig's Barbie - excellent as always - doesn't even make the Top 50, and I loved that film. This is taken from UK releases - so there's no All of Us Are Strangers, Poor Things and The Holdovers, but you can expect them to be on 2024's list as I was lucky enough to see them at the London Film Festival just gone by and they're all fantastic. There's also no Priscilla, but I am looking forward to that one - hopefully seeing it later this week.

Of course, as ever - this is purely opinionated and I wouldn't have it any other way, really - and it speaks to such a vast quantity of great releases that I had to leave the following off: Dungeons and Dragons: Honour Among Thieves (John Francis Daley, Jonathan Goldstein), Napoleon (Ridley Scott), Infinity Pool (Brandon Cronenberg), Till (Chinonye Chuckwu), Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (James Gunn), Air (Ben Affleck), The Damned Don't Cry (Fyzal Boulifa), War Pony (Riley Keough and Gina Gammell), Plane (Jean-Francois Richet), Chile '76 (Manuela Martel), Revoir Paris (Alice Winocour), 20,000 Species of Bees (Estibaliz Urresola Solaguren) and Rodeo (Lola Quivoron). Now without further ado - let's get on with the list:

A new British superstar has arrived in the form of Molly Manning Walker - one of the richest new explosions of talent since Lynne Ramsey's Ratcatcher and Morvern Callar. Three British teenagers find themselves on a rites-of-passage holiday, drinking, clubbing and hooking up - yet beneath it all; there's an aftermath of a morning wasteland. Authentic in its capture of the British nightclub experience without feeling the need to condemn nor glamorise, How to Have Sex is perfect in-flight viewing to start any holiday.

Where to Watch: Mubi

49. Three Musketeers: D'artagnan and Milady; Martin Bourboulon

There's a fantastic adaption of the Three Musketeers in there somewhere; wonderfully swept up in a swashbuckling epic that feels like the most authentic one so far - thanks to the sheer charisma of Francois Civil and Eva Green, two of the best actors of their generation. D'artagnan opens up with an introduction to the Musketeers allowing Milady to go deeper into the villain's past - with a devastatingly brutal final showdown. Whilst no third film is confirmed to be in the works yet - these two films capture the spirit and the camadre of the Musketeers perfectly. Alexandre Dumas fans craving something more faithful will be right at home.

Where To Watch: D'artgnan on Now, Milady in select cinemas.

Absolutely my jam. fuck yes. gayest movie of the year - it's a meta commentary on the relationship of social media with influencers and the need to always be saying something - caught in the middle of a comedy of errors; with a healthy dosage of cock and self-aware ketamine to back it up. Love the clever little bits of Sebastian Silva and Jordan Firstman playing themselves - the Total Eclipse of the Heart cover; and the nerve-wracking tension that this movie just builds and builds in a way not seen since Uncut Gems. LOVED THIS - surely the cure to end all cures for writers block.

Where to Watch: Mubi

2023 has been a pretty good year for horror and Evil Dead Rise continues the franchise's hot streak with appropriate gore and evil bloodletting. This traps a doomed family in a high rise tower block and delights in killing them all off one by one - so much gore, so much - everything - I was in love with this film from its title card and it did not let me down after that – you’ll never look at a cheesegrater quite the same way again.

Where to Watch: Netflix
Nowhere to Run. A love letter to The Warriors; this film is ambitious as they come - the stylised action sequence in the final act is fearless and a masterful example of the art of fight choreography: Reeves puts Wick up against everything and the film shines because of it - testing the boundaries of the franchise in what should really be its concluding chapter. Love the cinematography here and how well designed the conflict is - everything is trying to rip off the Wick movies right now but there is none better than the original article.

Where to Watch: Amazon Prime Video
An odyssey of a donkey-centric drama that harkens back to the days of Bresson but updated for the 21st century gives it such a cutting edge thanks to Mychal Dymek's stunning donkey-eye-view cinematography. Jerzy Skolimowski is 84 and still putting out banger after banger - with a visual eye for brilliance in a film about innocents told from a cruellest heart.

Where to Watch: BFI Player
A whodunit at a competitive hairdressing contest is a combination of extravagance and bloodshed; in a stylishly cutthroat one location thriller.
A movie designed to break you down into tears and have you crying from the word go it shouldn't be seen as anything but manipulative yet Close is utterly devastating and it works so well at being so manipulative, I'm not ashamed to admit that I cried - Lukas Dhont gets the most out of a tender relationship between Eden Dambrine and Gustav De Waele; two talented actors - and looks at the tragic fallout as it runs into the problems of the perceptions of society. Innocence lost, indeed - at such a young age.

Where to Watch: Mubi

Bold, terrifying horror of daring proportions this one sent chills through my spine and refused to let me go. An Oscar nomination for Teyana Taylor, please and thank you. What a powerful understated drama about the walls closing in on a family caught in the middle of the New York housing crisis - devastatingly directed by AV Rockwell. Nida Manzour gave us the brilliant We Are Lady Parts which is one of the best modern television shows so to see her fuse Bollywood with a Scott Pilgrim inspired British touch makes it an instant cult classic in my book. It's an ambitious wedding heist of a movie with a fiery performance by Priya Kansara - who has star in the making written all over her.

Where to Watch: Rental

39. One Fine Morning; Mia Hansen-Løve

Such a devastating look at aging and the connections that we form in our lives it's hard not to be swept up under the spell of Mia Hansen-Løve’s majestic One Fine Morning - Léa Seydoux's best performance of her career sees her character caught between a new love affair and the failing mind of her father. Poking fun at M. Night Shyamalan stopped being funny ever since he started making good movies again. This is such a meditative, humanistic end of the world thriller about the four horsemen sent to kill a family to prevent the end of the world: high stakes yet no big grand twist either - this is Shyamalan reigned in. Dave Bautista and Rupert Grint standout with Paul Tremblay's novel the guiding hand – Bautista arguably putting in one of the strongest performances of the year as a cold and calculated man with an impossible choice.

Where to Watch: Now
Tender and upending tradition at a traditional caftan store in one of Morocco’s oldest medinas; the film looks at the dynamic between Halim and Mina and how it’s changed when Mina notices how Halim is moved by Youssef, a new young hire who joins to aid them. An indictment of how hostile Britain has been in the very recent past to the LGBTQ+ community. It doesn't make for pretty watching - it's a hard film to sit through, with Section 28 - which banned the promotion of homosexuality in schools, still present on people's minds today. This displays the dynamic between a closeted teacher and a student with the care to avoid falling victim to another Hollywood ending which is the last thing this film needed - thanks to a powerhouse effort by Georgia Oakley and the incredible Rosy McEwen.

Where to Watch: BFI Player
Bigmouth strikes again. David Fincher's return to form after the underwhelming Mank is probably the closest we'll get to a Hitman film adaption that's actually good, with Fassbender's cold, calculating and ruthless assassin sent into a spiral after a kill goes wrong. Best watched on the big screen as opposed to Netflix it makes an inventive use of the Smiths songs and a cold, dark melancholic approach to feel like a modern take on Jean-Pierre Melvile’s Le Samourai - arguably a classic as that film itself.

Where to Watch: Netflix
Loach’s rallying cry against xenophobia is startingly and terrifyingly realistic as one would expect nothing less from Britain’s premier social realist director; in maybe his final film. A direct response to the systematic racism in the UK – The Old Oak shines a light on community and togetherness in the face of all odds; and is hard to watch but oh so vitally important. As with the best films there’s no easy answer and the film manages to showcase the best and worst of humanity in one film the way Loach can only do best – he caused shockwaves with I, Daniel Blake in 2016 but if anything this is more vital given the current state of the nation.

Where to Watch: Rental
A love letter to London, Rye Lane is such a treat and a real modern classic of a romcom! nothing more awkward than having your playlist play on shuffle at a party and the sparks and the vibes are just perfect there. all the praise for Raine Allen-Miller - its characters are so infectiously likeable and awkward and it just goes to show that everyone is human, really. I love this city so much and both David Johnson and Vivian Oparah come from out of nowhere to show that the romcom is very much not only alive but alive and kicking.

Where to Watch: Disney+
Crusie control. A return to the spy movie espionage narrative with each action sequence forming a different act of the film culminating in a spectacular motorcycle jump set piece; Dead Reckoning Part One continues Cruise's rallying cry against the evils of artificial intelligence with the best Mission Impossible film yet - explosive, no holds barred and full of spectacular set pieces that make so much use of the dutch angles it's hard not to love. McQuarrie, in going out of his way to become a journeyman director at the cost of being an auteurist has become an auteurist journeyman – and Hollywood is all the better for it. ahahaha absolutely fuck yes. Paul Schrader got really into gardening and it shows - delivering a redemptive arc with one of his most unlikeable leads front and centre as part of the loose trilogy of First Reformed and The Card Counter. A really fun comedy with madcap energy that obviously calls to mind Booksmart. A queer lesbian fight club spirals out of control and has some of the best set-up to payoff scenes that I've seen in quite some time, and every time a bomb went off I couldn't help but laugh. Hard to imagine the cast not having fun on set and I love Emma Seligman's follow-up to the most stressful film of all-time, Shiva Baby - and This is Ayo Edebiri's movie - and she owns it with one endless best line delivery of 2023 after another. But just like her character Ruby Cruz is key to making the whole thing work.
Christopher Nolan turned a 3 hour biopic into one of the event blockbusters of the summer in the only way Christopher Nolan knows how - a fascinating condemnation of the actions of the United States told through the eyes of Oppenheimer himself; with a stellar performance by Cillian Murphy that has him answer for the weight of America's sins through a study of paranoia, anger and conspiracy.

Where to Watch: Rental
A wonderful anti-capitalist act of revolution; free spirited youth and progress – a rallying cry for change as an artform is fiercely independent and a fire that sparks a revolution. Ariela Barer, Kristine Froseth, Lukas Gage, Forrest Goodluck, Sasha Lane, all excellent – and the film attempts to portray the various different problems of putting people with different views by putting them in a melting pot and letting them cook together – sparks fly with an unparalleled energy. The synth score, the look and feel of it all – it feels like a fuck you to everyone in charge and deserves all the audience possible.
Christian Petzold has been making German mythology anew for the past decade or so and his film Afire is a wonderful magical realist tale about two friends, Leon and Felix, who arrive at Felix’s holiday home to find a mysterious woman, Nadja – there already – with the threat of a forest fire in the background. Avoiding the manic pixie dream girl trope, Afire is a devastating look at how quickly self-centred narcissism and jealousy can consume even the closest of friends; and Petzold’s muse, Paula Beer – deliver a tremendously multifaceted performance.

Where to Watch: Rental

A post colonialism critique of the French, Pacification is an entirely rich labyrinth of an existential drama that plays out like Abel Ferrera's Miami Vice. Bold, visionary - exciting and daring - Pacifiction takes steps to accomplish something truly breathtaking - Benoit Maigmel acts as a centrepiece for the corruption of the state through his central performance, and through him we see such a rampant control of luxury.

Where to Watch: Mubi

As romantic as finales get; this is just such a flawless film - Channing Tatum, Salma Hayek, all exceptional - Soderbergh is still just majestic at getting everything right and this teardown of the patriarchy is what we very much needed. That finale is the best ending of the year - and Mike returns for one last dance; it's hard not to fall in love. Love the little scenes like the dance on the London bus - and it's further proof Soderbergh has just perfected the movie artform, few to do it better.

A 3 hour long nightmare that I absolutely adored; and not just that - it's also Ari Aster's best work to date. Unflinching in its compromise and full of absurdly brilliant situations that test the limits of your imagination - there's nothing quite like Beau is Afraid this year and it may end up being the most unique film of 2023. Certainly the most traumatising from the city sequence alone: it’s like having a never ending panic attack with a gorgeous animated sequence in the middle.
All praise to Park Ji-min who puts in one of the year’s best performance as Freddie; a 25 year old who decides, like much of her life – on impulse to return to Korea to reconnect with her parents after a lengthy stay in France after she was adopted. In a quest for her biological parents she embarks on a journey that will change her life in ways she never expected to: adapting to the conservative Korean culture with free-spirted energy not understanding its social cues and rules causes havoc in her friend group; and the scene where Freddie dances to the hypnotic beat of Jeremie Arache and Christophe Musset’s Anybody is one of the best of the year. The cinema date in this transformed my opinion of this film from very good to legendary; and it all starts with a series of missed connections. Miyazaki is back with an intimate sense of wonder and imagination; but well aware of his own mortality and challenging the concept of a farewell film by looking at his legacy whilst making something new. After escaping from the wartorn Tokyo to live in the remote home of his new stepmother Natsuko, Mahito is stalked by a grey heron as the world around him grows forever stranger. Beautifully illustrated with nods from all things from Grave of the Fireflies to Doctor Who’s Partners in Crime (tell me you won’t be reminded of the Adipose after watching this); it’s a grand masterstroke that is the best animated film of the year.

Where to Watch: Currently in select cinemas
This is one of the "most" films of the year and the fact that it might be my favourite blockbuster movie tells you something: a harrowing human drama that finally nails non-monster parts of a modern Godzilla story; and absolutely crushes it with the big guy. Best score of the year and a rich anti-war theme that puts most American films to shame. Its critics who call it pro Nationalism couldn’t be further than the truth – this is the most damning statement of Japanese attitudes towards the lack of care for life in World War Two that we could’ve had; and pushing everything towards giving its characters something to fight for the film feels like a real artwork. Legendary have a lot to catch up on.

Where to Watch: Currently in select cinemas
A movie for the disaster bisexuals! featuring the most awkward meet the parents scene you've ever seen - Franz Rogowski plays Tomas, a German filmmaker who embraces his sexuality when he and his husband Martin are both involved in affairs. Chaos all around with another all-timer of an Adèle Exarchopoulos performance, Passages is much more deserving of The Worst Person in the World title than the film of the same name; but it shows how good Rogowski is of an actor that you can't help but care for him regardless of all the horrible things his character does.

A biopic that shows the life of automotive mogul Enzo Ferrari places you in a time in Formula 1 racing when stepping into the high-powered racing cars was a matter of life and death. Anchored by a brilliantly ruthless Adam Driver performance opposite a fiery Penelope Cruz, Ferrari showcases Mann at the top of his game; a late career epic that is best watched knowing nothing about the true story that this film draws from: as one of the most horrifying scenes in a film all year is present in Ferrari and the shock is still present even months removed from watching it; to the point where I don’t think I’ll ever recover.

Where to Watch: Cinemas
Compared to the likes of Elena Ferrante; The Eight Mountains is a fascinating exploration of male solitude after two friends, Pietro from Turin, and Bruno – who grew up in an isolated village; are drawn together over the course of several years. The Italian Alps provide the backdrop for this story of self-discovery and of a complex friendship, with a memorable score from Daniel Norgen. Call me sentimental perhaps but I loved this one; and late career Spielberg has never been better. Gabriel Labelle portrays a young man who experiences the discovery of a family secret through his filming and editing of his own parents – whilst discovering a love for movie magic and the powers of the movies. It’s a movie about the movies; but one of the most sincere to ever do it: and one of the most beautiful too; Spielberg poured his heart and soul into this. Michelle Williams’ performance is spellbinding, and the way he shoots his war movie as a teen shows something of the genius Spielberg will turn into. Give me a Fabelmans 2 please; about the making of Columbo and Duel – and I love Spielberg’s dedication to paying respect to not just John Ford, but also David Lynch – two of the greatest directors to ever have lived.

Where to Watch: Now
A study of colonialism in 19th century Iceland – a young Danish priest heads to a remote part of the country to build a Church and photograph his people. But the landscape is harsh and unforgiving, and can corrupt the morality of anyone. This gives us a tremendous character study with jaw-dropping cinematography of the rugged Iceland landscape by Maria von Hausswolff, and the film captures a realtime experience through history as though we were there with its characters. There are echoes of There Will Be Blood here as it fuses beauty and honesty together as one.

Did he fall or was he pushed? Such is the set-up for this provocative courtroom drama from Justine Triet that opens with the death of a husband; and a woman suspected of his murder. The only witness? Their blind son – played by Milo Machado-Graner, who has the keys to her freedom. What follows may not be an entirely new narrative; but it moves like a gut punch all the same, a powerful, hard-hitting film that sees an Oscar-winning worthy performance by Sandra Huller. The film puts the study of art vs. the artist under scrutiny and asks whether they can be separated with a lot of comparisons easily made to Tár – but it’s its own piece of work, such a triumph of morally challenging art that provides no easy answer.

Adapted from David Grann’s true crime novel; Martin Scorsese’s magnificent epic that reunites him with Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert DeNiro is one for the ages, simply because of how much Lily Gladstone steals the screentime from underneath both of these titans of cinema by being a constant presence as her character Mollie finds herself wrapped up into an horrific scheme that is seeing the Osage people murdered one by one in 1920s Oklahoma. Benefiting from a switch of perspective to the Osage and not glorifying the actions of DiCaprio’s most pathetic character, Ernest Burkhart, Scorsese has created a powerful, true gut punch of a picture that is crafted with the skills of a veteran who has rarely been in better form. Greed and power corrupts – and it’s so effortlessly moving those almost four hours absolutely fly by.
A rich, gothic horror story that recreates the atmosphere of 70s British horror perfectly, Enys Men arrives as a follow up to Bait, Mark Jenin’s debut film – with a resounding success. A 16mm mood and atmosphere piece that feels as foreboding as just about any horror story that you’ve read late at night – and you know that something sinister or horrifying is going to happen; or maybe, just maybe – it already has. Jenkin’s experimental, non-narrative Roeg-influenced assault of the senses is something that you can’t help but sit back and admire its bravado as one of the most truly original films of the year. Cornish cinema is alive and thriving.
