Sirens alum Kevin Daniels and Avra Friedman (Stop the Bleeding) are set for recurring roles opposite Avan Jogia, Kelli Bergland, Beau Mirchoff and Roxane Mesquida on Now Apocalypse, Starz’s upcoming original half-hour comedy series from creator/executive producer Gregg Araki and Steven Soderbergh.

Co-written by Araki, who also directs, and Vogue.com sex columnist Karley Sciortino, Now Apocalypse is a 10-episode surreal, coming-of-age comedy that follows Ulysses (Jogia) and his friends Carly (Berglund), Ford (Mirchoff) and Severine (Mesquida), who are on various quests pursing love, sex and fame while navigating the strange and oftentimes bewildering city of Los Angeles.
Daniels will play Barnabas. He approaches Ford (Mirchoff), who’s diligently working on his screenplay in a coffee shop, and introduces himself as a producer who’d be interested in reading Ford’s script. John Malkovich is set to star in The New Pope, Paolo Sorrentino’s follow-up to the critically praised The Young Pope limited series, with Jude Law returning following his star turn as tormented American pontiff Lenny Belardo in the first series. Production on The New Pope, from FremantleMedia-owned Wildside (The Young Pope) and Spain’s Mediapro, is set to begin in Italy in November.

Written by Sorrentino with his frequent Italian co-writer Umberto Contarello, who also served as co-writer on Young Pope, and Stefano Bises, The New Pope limited series also is set in the world of modern papacy. The New Pope, an original production of HBO-Sky, is produced by Lorenzo Mieli and Mario Gianani for Wildside and co-produced by Mediapro. The series has been in the works since last year.

Producers are keeping mum on Law & Malkovich’s roles in The New Pope. There were questions at the conclusion of The Young Pope as to whether Law’s Lenny Belardo was alive or dead. In the final moments, when Lenny was delivering his sermon in Venice, he doubled-over in pain and a vision of the Virgin Mary appeared in the clouds. While The New Pope is a new series, it is expected to retain some elements of Young Pope.
Just days after Gov. Jerry Brown inked an extension of California’s $330 million film and television tax incentive initiative to 2025, the program is welcoming Good Girls and You to the Golden State.

Pegging its progress in no small part to the rich pickings of plucking series from other jurisdiction to the home of Hollywood, the California Film Commission announced today that the Christian Hendricks’ co-starring NBC show and the yet to debut Greg Berlanti produced Lifetime show are coming to the state for their second seasons.

In fact, the proclamation from the CFC of the latest allocation awards is the first indication that the September 9 premiering You has been renewed for a Season 2. Interestingly, like Good Girls, which had its second season renewal made public back in early May, psychological thriller You has an international distribution deal with Netflix, which may have sweetened the pot for the state.

Moving from the lucrative tax credits of Georgia, Good Girls will receive $9.3 million under the incentive program. Shifting over from the very very lucrative Empire State, You is set to get $6.06 million from the Golden State.
Efforts to find a new home for L.A. Confidential, originally developed for but passed over by CBS, have failed. The drama, based on the James Ellroy novel and subsequent feature film, had been eyed to land at CBS All Access, the subscription service from co-producers CBS Television Studios. However, following extended talks, a deal ultimately could not be reached.

Sources say Lionsgate TV, who produced the pilot alongside New Regency and CBS Television Studios, may have asked for a higher licensing fee than the SVOD home had expected. Others maintain that finances had little to do with it — given CBS All Access' financial commitment to Star Trek: Discovery and the franchise's other forthcoming series. What's more, CBS All Access already has period drama Strange Angel, which is set in the 1930s.

Former True Detective and The Path star Michelle Monaghan has been tapped as the female lead opposite Mehdi Dehbi in Netflix’s drama series Messiah, from producers Mark Burnett and Roma Downey.

Created by Michael Petroni (The Book Thief), Messiah is described as a 21st Century political thriller that chronicles the world’s reaction to a man, Al-Masih (Dehbi), who emerges from the Middle East claiming he is sent from God and creates a groundswell of followers. Is he what they say he is or is he a dangerous fraud bent on dismantling the world’s geopolitical order, causing civil havoc as he beguiles the world’s media and its audience? At its core, Messiah is a series that challenges us to examine what we believe and who we are.

Monaghan will play Eva Geller, a highly specialized US intelligence officer who pits her wits and years of experience against Al-Masih (Dehbi) – an incendiary religious-political figure emerging out of Syria whose influence is growing. Whip smart, tenacious and determined to prove she is right, Eva literally goes to the ends of the earth to prosecute this allusive figure while running headlong into the truth about her own moral convictions.
Dehbi, whose casting was first reported by Variety, will play Al Massih, described as an enigma, his origins a mystery. People are unsure if he is a divine messenger or a political rabble-rouser.
A MYSTERIOUS FIGURE ROAMS OUR MODERN WORLD, RAISING QUESTIONS OF FAITH AND BELIEF IN "MESSIAH," COMING TO NETFLIX

Hollywood, CA - November 16, 2017 -- Netflix, the world's leading Internet entertainment service, will bring Messiah, an epic suspenseful drama exploring the lines among religion, faith and politics, to its members around the globe in 2019.

Messiah will chronicle the modern world's reaction to a man who first appears in the Middle East creating a groundswell of followers around him claiming he is the Messiah. Is he sent from God or is he a dangerous fraud bent on dismantling the world's geopolitical order? In ten hour-long episodes, the story unfolds from multiple points of view, including a young CIA agent, an Israeli Shin Bet officer, a Latino preacher and his Texan daughter, a Palestinian refugee and the media, among others.

The series was created by Michael Petroni (The Chronicles of Narnia: the Voyage of the Dawn Treader, The Book Thief) and brought to Netflix by Petroni and Emmy(R) award winning producer Mark Burnett, MGM's President, Television Group & Digital (The Voice, Shark Tank, Survivor and The Bible Series).

Messiah, a Netflix production, will be executive produced by Petroni, who also wrote the first episode. Also executive producing are Burnett and Roma Downey (The Bible Series, Son of God, Ben Hur), Andrew Deane (Industry Entertainment) and James McTeigue (Sense8, V for Vendetta), who will also serve as a director.

"Messiah promises to be a fascinating series for viewers of every faith, and a thrilling drama filled with multi-layered characters set on a global stage," said Cindy Holland, Vice President, Original Content for Netflix.

Said Petroni, "Messiah will have every viewer asking the question 'is he or isn't he?' How you answer that question may reveal more about you than it does about the show. Messiah challenges us to examine what we believe and why."

"Messiah is a series that will have the audience asking big questions. What if someone showed up in 2018 amid strange occurrences and was thought to be the Messiah? What would society do? How would the media cover him? Would millions simply quit work? Could governments collapse?" said Downey and Burnett. "It's a series that could change everything."
