Please note that a performer can now only win once per year and a show can only be represented by two winners per year. No exceptions will be made for any performer or show, so please use thoughtful consideration when making your nominations. You will have to fill out the submission form for each nominee you submit. You can submit the document up to 5 times, but each entry must be for a different performer or all of your other nominations will be disqualified. The Top 5 most nominated actresses and Top 5 actors will be placed in the poll next week to determine the Readers' Choice Performer of the Month.
Since Sadie Sink has already won then if any other performer wins the series eligibility ends for the year.
In each episode, a family takes a full week away from their busy schedules to go on a journey to reconnect and rebuild their family bonds. Leaving their phones, laptops, and all other devices behind, they must find their way to their week-long accomodations the “old fashioned way”, with just a paper map in hand. On arrival, they’re greeted by their Family Reboot guide, who welcomes them to their journey and directs them to their first activity, finding the key to their house for the week. Once the families have gotten inside and have chosen the rooms they must share, the guide talks to the parents about how the week ahead can benefit them the most, whether it’s finding ways to connect with their children, with each other or both. For the next several days, it’s more fun and games interspersed with meaningful conversations that the families typically haven’t had time to have. All organized by the guide, the week’s journey focuses on working together, communicating, and most of all having fun, reminding the family to put aside their distractions and busy schedules to come together again and make new memories. The families leave the journey completely “rebooted” – more connected, happier, and ready to take on their busy lives at home again, but with an entirely new outlook.

With the help of an agent, Giannis entered the NBA Draft in 2013 in a long shot prospect that would change not only his life but the life of his entire family.

Hulu Announces Season Two Series Renewals for Fan Favorite Love, Victor

Following a successful first season, Love, Victor returns to Hulu for a 10-episode second season. Ranking as the #1 most-watched Drama on Hulu during its premiere week this past June, Love, Victor is set in the world of the groundbreaking 2018 film LOVE, SIMON which was inspired by Becky Albertalli’s acclaimed novel, “Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda.” The first season followed Victor, a new student at Creekwood High School, on his own journey of self-discovery, facing challenges at home, adjusting to a new city and exploring his sexual orientation. As Victor and his friends mature, so will season two, promising to build on these themes of sexual identity, acceptance and navigating the odyssey we all know as high school.

The series stars Michael Cimino, Ana Ortiz, James Martinez, Isabella Ferreira, Mateo Fernandez, Rachel Naomi Hilson, Bebe Wood, George Sear, Anthony Turpel and Mason Gooding. The film’s original writers Isaac Aptaker (This Is Us) and Elizabeth Berger (This Is Us) serve as executive producers alongside Brian Tanen, Jason Ensler, Isaac Klausner, Marty Bowen, Adam Fishbach, Wyck Godfrey, Pouya Shahbazian and Adam Londy. 20th Century Fox Television serves as the studio.

A monthly feature in which we're trying to find the most compelling, best
acted, written, directed and just generally great, memorable scenes that we've
seen in the past month on TV.

ABSENTIA, July 17, 2020, Actors: Stana Katic and more, The Scene: Emily’s
escape
DJRiter:
Emily’s escape from the clutches of Meridian and their Eastern European
compound is nothing short of a lesson on how to be a bad-a** on television.
Katic was masterful, I suspect doing many of her own stunts in this sequence
that Emily frees herself from her bonds, removes the nail that had been driven
in her hand, and fights her way through a myriad of soldiers, taking them out
one by one and often one-handed. There is one sequence where she executes a
fight up a flight of stairs and at the top of the stairs points her weapon
downstairs, behind her, not looking, and takes out a pursuer. It was awesome
work that definitely elevates Katic near the top of the class of bad-a**
actresses.

Scenes: Enoch's sacrifice & Sousa explains to Daisy why he's always
willing to help & Daisy talks to her mother
Justyna: Last month has delivered so many memorable moments on Agents of SHIELD. This show is certainly my favorite and it continues to excel in its final season. Episode 9 was especially powerful and one of the best in the show's history. I could mention a dozen of scenes from this hour alone but I have to go with Enoch's sacrifice. His character took me by surprise. I never imagined how attached I would get to him back at beginning of season 5. And yet here we go. Enoch doesn't even hesitate before he hands Jemma a part of him that kept him alive for centuries. He basically takes out his own heart to save the lives of everyone on the ship, his SHIELD family. He shares a meaningful moment with Jemma and Deke before they're forced to leave him behind, but Daisy and Coulson stay by his side until the very end. Enoch's entire speech about loneliness and his place in the circle of life is incredibly well written and acted. Joel Stoffer steals the hour with his remarkable performance. Enoch admits how he's grown to be afraid of being alone. He shares his sadness over Coulson's fate, advises Daisy to cherish her last mission with the team and expresses how he misses Fitz, his best friend, in this final moment. It's heartbreaking, somehow inspiring and absolutely unforgettable. Enoch joined the show rather late but he was such an important part of the team and his death hit me harder than expected. And the fact that he never gets to finish his last sentence... Kudos to cast and crew of the show for all their impressive work.
Folie-lex: Sousa explains to Daisy why he's always willing
to help. Whilst this was also him admitting to his crush and making Daisy
realise it's not that one-sided, it was a nice summary of why these people are
in this line of business. And the accolades coming from an amazing character
like Agent Sousa, that carries more weight than most. Not to mention... I'll
take any scene that gives Enver the spotlight.
Saloni: Enoch
sacrifices himself for the team and dies with Daisy and Coulson by his side.
DJRiter: Daisy talks to and protects her mother, from the
past, Jiaying. In a beautifully written and performed scene, an emotional and
conflicted Daisy is tasked with protecting her mother in the past. The two
talk about lost family and Daisy struggles to not reveal her identity to her
mother. This was some of Bennett’s best work on the show in a long while.

COUNCIL OF DADS, "Fight or Flight", July 2, 2020, Actors: Sarah Wayne
Callies, Tom Everett Scott, The Scene: Robin talks to Scott
Luana:
This show was by no means perfect, but there were many things to enjoy, and
this particular scene was both heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same
time. Not only that but it was so beautifully directed, written, and
performed. The small details of them finishing off each other’s sentences made
a real point of making us feel they were on different planes but still
connected. Perhaps this is part of the reason some of this felt unreal, but
there’s something so healthy about this relationship, and their goodbye was a
perfect example of that.

CURSED, "The Sacrifice", July 17, 2020, Actors: Katherine
Langford, Gustaf Skarsgård
The Scene: Nimue and Merlin say
goodbye
Luana:
Events will not work as expected for them but this moment, when they thought
it was the last time they would see each other, was so sweet and heartfelt.
Merlin and Nimue’s relationship is definitely a highlight of the show and it’s
amazing how, in such a short time, they were able to develop this relationship
enough for us to truly care about their goodbye. Wonderful work from both

Scenes: Dorothy's rendition of “Pure Imagination” & Dorothy's
second wish & Clara invites Cliff to her wedding
Elvis: Who would have thought that newly formed friendship
between Crazy Jane's personality "Baby Doll" and Dorothy would end in such a
deadly way. The scene where Dorothy makes her second wish and unleashes the
horrifying monster named Candlemaker in Jane's "Underground", was the most
chilling and jaw-dropping scene in the series.
Abby: Episode "Sex Patrol" featured a
musical number of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory's "Pure Imagination"
by Abigail Shapiro as Dorothy, the eternal 11-year-old girl. Dorothy has been
pulling heartstrings all season with her tragic backstory. But in this scene
we see her happy, surrounded by friends, and for the first time joining a
party and not just listening in solitude while others have fun.
Klutzy girl: Clara invites Cliff to her wedding. I'm glad Clara gave Cliff a chance and
took this big first step. Something is definitely going to happen that will
screw up Cliff's chances to attend but he wants to make up for all those years
they lost. And he's also pretty excited about his grandson, which was sweet.
I'm hoping they can mend their relationship and figure it out soon.

2020, Actors: Michael Cimino, Nick Robinson, Anthony
Turpel, The Scenes: Simon offers his advice to Victor & Victor
tells Felix he’s gay
Luana: Simon tells Victor that every one of his friends had been
helping with the advice. This scene was so sweet, and it made such a poignant
point. Simon explains to Victor that, contrary to what he believes, the fact
that Simon shared Victor’s story with his friends, wasn’t to mock him but to
give him the best advice they could. That they were always in his corner,
rooting for him, and, who doesn’t want that? I think that was somewhat unsaid
because it might have been too on the nose, but it came across perfectly.
Alison D: Victor calls Felix on the walkie, asking if they
can talk. Victor struggles in the moment. He needs Felix to turn away from him
so he doesn’t lose his nerve. Once he tells Felix he’s gay, Felix hugs him and
says he doesn’t know the perfect thing to say but he’s happy he told him and
it changes nothing between them. From Victor’s nervousness to Felix’s tears,
it was the sweetest of moments. It shows how far Victor has come with
self-acceptance, as well as how much their friendship has grown.

Rhys, Juliet Rylance, Tatiana Maslany, The Scenes:
Perry's breaking point & Sister Alice heals a man in
wheelchair
Folie-lex: Perry goes on a rant which prods Della to find Emily
her lawyer. To see Perry argue Emily's case out of sheer frustration from the
injustice of it all, even though he's not a lawyer and Della realising he's
the man for the job was the show's major turning point... and I think the
moment a lot of people who were looking for the connection with the source
material and the title character, were waiting for.
Ellys: Juliet
Rylance and Matthew Rhys are forming a new dynamic duo of television right in
front of our eyes. Episode five was a glorious deep dive into several
characters, bookended by Rhys and Rylance's lead performances. The entire
episode smoldered with molten tension as Rylance's Street raced to outwit the
clock and give Emily a fighting chance, while deftly handling the episode's
more tragic events. She's the hammer that strikes Mason's brooding iron,
tapping into his potential and buried need to productively rage against
injustice. This was the episode that made me do the almost impossible for what
could have been a limited series: root for a second season. Thank goodness HBO
is rewarding us with more.
DJRiter: There’s a reason Tatiana
Maslany was named one of the staff choices for Performer of the Month for June,
and were she eligible she would be a leading contender for July for this
electrifying scene. Sister Alice leads an emotional and charged service as she
performs a “miracle” of curing a man in a wheelchair and making him walk.
Whether Sister Alice is a charlatan or a real deal miracle worker, you believe
every moment of Maslany bringing her vividly to life.

STARGIRL, "Brainwave Jr." & "Shining Knight", July 20 &
27, 2020, Actors: Jake Austin Walker, Brec Bassinger, Luke
Wilson and more, The Scenes: Henry's death & Pat comforts
Courtney
Justyna: It's been a couple of weeks since the episode but I still can't quite believe what's happened. Henry's death was both completely unexpected and heartbreaking. He risked everything to try to save his dad but when it came to a choice he didn't hesitate to choose the good guys and lost his life as a result. The way he understood that he's about to die, apologized to Yolanda and despite everything still offered hope for Stargirl, asked her to believe in the good in people, made it even more painful to watch. Even though they argued with him earlier in the episode both Rick and Yolanda did everything in their power, desperately trying to get through the bars and save Henry. Their determination and failure to protect him made me more emotional than I expected and the whole scene has stayed with me till now. This series doesn't hesitate to change status quo and brutally alter the story from the comics. I never thought I'd enjoy this show so much but it has truly become one of my favorites this year. For the good and the tragic parts, the music, the fights and its characters. So much bigger on the inside. Kudos! It's probably gonna take some time for me to completely accept that Henry Jr is truly gone, but what a memorable goodbye. Couldn't possibly choose another scene, despite the many great ones from last month.
Folie-lex: Henry Jr and Brainwave face off and Henry sacrifices
himself. What made this more shocking, was the fact that as a result it robbed
Henry from living up to his full redemption, which made the whole thing even
more sad and tragic. However there also beauty in it, seeing him finally
willing to come to terms with who his father really is and choosing the right
side for all the right reasons and making the ultimate sacrifice.
Chris: Courtney breaks down while hugging Pat, after her father leaves her
again.
Klutzy girl: Courtney and Pat's relationship has come a
long way since the pilot, and I love that he's the one to comfort her in the
wake of her biological father's unexpected visit. She ran to him, which was
sweet! Pat is 100% her dad in every way that matters, and I hope she realizes
that soon.
The Scene: Laszlo and John

I don't know what I loved more: the banter, the poetry or the realization that
Laszlo is a happy drunk? Either way what made this scene special was how it
underlined how close and genuinely fond of each other these three are. In a
show that's generally so bleak it's nice to have these little sweet grounding
moments that remind us why we root for this crew.

THE BOLD TYPE, "The Truth Will Set You Free", July 2, 2020, Actors: Katie Stevens, Kelly AuCoin
The Scene: Jane’s dad offers her a new perspective
Luana: This scene was so sweet, Jane has been struggling with the new changes, and her dad tells her she can choose to see them as the thing that saved her life instead of the thing that simply changed in her. The last two episodes we got went downhill fast, but this is an example of how good this show can be when it wants to. I hope we get to see more of this show, but more specifically, this show at its best, not worst.

THE UMBRELLA ACADEMY, "Valhalla", July 31, 2020, Actors: Robert Sheehan, Ellen Page, Emmy Raver-Lampman and more, The Scenes: The opening sequence & Klaus, Vanya and Allison dance it out
Justyna: So many memorable scenes in the first half of season two but I decided to highlight the opening sequence where we learn what happened to the Hargreeves siblings and most importantly witness yet another doomsday event. Only this time everyone seems to be fighting side by side and with their abilities stronger than ever. Vanya levitates and destroys a missile, Allison changes reality with her rumor, Klaus leads an army of the dead, Diego turns the bullets aimed at him towards his attackers, Luther jumps incredibly high and then takes a hit from a rocket, not to mention Ben and his tentacles taking down the enemy from a nearby roof. The potential for this group is truly remarkable and this sequence shows just how powerful they are together. This new world-ending event sets the tone for the season and certainly gives the viewers something to look forward to. There's so much to love about this opening, but let's not forget about the music. The music on this show so often elevates the scene it accompanies and this moment is no exception. Kudos to cast and crew for all their work. Can't wait to finish the rest of the season.
Beth: Throughout the first season, we saw the Hargreeves 'siblings' brush
aside and repress the weirdness of some of their romantic entanglements. In
this scene the three of them (Vanya, Klaus and Allison) finally address some
of the elephants in the room in the best way they know how, booze and dancing
it out. Klaus rightfully calls out his sisters' weird romantic pasts and
laments on his own failed attempt to reverse course for the love of his life,
Dave. They then bond in a way that we haven't seen yet, dancing it out as
adults, thus being there for one another. It was important and sweet and I
loved every minute of the break from the usual chaos.

Fanti, The Scenes: Shotgun Mary pushes Ava off the cliff &
Mother Superion's revelation
Ellys: This scene was one of my top five favorites of the whole
first season. De Fanti, a supreme talent who reminds me of Ingrid Bergman and
other Old Hollywood Silver Screen legends, exists as something of a shadow
around the edges of the show until later episodes place Mother Superion in an
unexpected predicament. This quiet moment she shares with Baptista's Ava, with
its revelation, elevates the entire story, while also giving Baptista the
opportunity to introduce a more thoughtful, mature layer to her own character.
DJRiter: An epic almost blink and you’ll miss it moment that
perfectly described their relationship. While they’re on the run together Mary
nonchalantly pushes Ava off a cliff because she’s tired of what she’s saying.
She’s also illustrating to Ava the scope of the gift she has been given. It
was a classic Shot-Gun Mary move!
WYNONNA EARP, "On the Road Again", July 26, 2020, Actors: Melanie Scrofano, Katherine Barrell
The Scene: The fight
Luana:
There were so many great scenes, and we’ve been waiting for the show to come
back for so long that everything was enjoyable, but there are few things
Wynonna Earp does better than a kickass fight, and her and Nicole make the
best of teams. Add some zombie-style adversaries and you have the perfect way
to end the episode and welcome us back to this world. Though I have to admit
Nedley with the pads was a close second.

There was something primitive but gorgeous seeing everyone on horseback
galloping down that hill trying to gate in those horses. No dialogue, just the
sound of hoofs hitting the ground hard and the cowboys Ye-hawing with the
show's score playing in the background. It was a thing of beauty. That they
were having a blast only added to it.

I must start by saying, the music was spot on in this episode. Kudos. With that out of the way, let’s get started.

Victor is a man on a mission. He walks into school carrying the note for Benji, slipping it into his locker once the coast is clear. I hope that was the right locker because they all look the same to me. Actually, it must be the right locker because there’s no time for another complication. After all, it is the season finale. Victor must know the locker number—creepy or cute? I’m going to go with observant.

Once Victor has completed his mission, he meets up with Felix in the hallway and they talk about the whys of Mia still not knowing that her boyfriend is gay. Victor wants her to have one more amazing night before he rips a hole in her world and shreds her heart. I believe Victor. I believe that he believes that one great night is going to somehow make the blow a bit softer. It’s a ridiculous idea, but it comes from a place of love. He isn’t going to get away with it, but his heart is in the right place.

Weird theater class girl, Wendy (Abigail Killmeier), asks Felix to the dance, so Lake lies and says she too has a date. I know this is supposed to show me that Lake really does care about Felix. Here’s the thing, I don’t doubt that Lake likes Felix. I know she does, but her behavior makes her unworthy, and this little display does nothing to change my mind. Anyway, Lake bulldozes her way into a date with one of Andrew’s sports ball friends, Kieran (Charlie Hall).

On a completely superficial note, Mia’s school outfit is incredibly cute. I realize I may be the only one that was focused on her early wardrobe choices, but her fashion choices have really improved over the season.

Harold is being a cute dad, geeking a bit over Mia’s first formal. Veronica is still trying to build a relationship with Mia. Mia rejects the offer of jewelry, but also makes some big strides by sharing some of her feelings. She wants Harold and Veronica to be happy, and she’ll wrap her head around the marriage and the baby, but that’s as far as she’s willing to go. Even with this forward movement, Mia’s still someone dealing with abandonment issues. Obviously, Mia is doing this to keep herself safe. If she never builds a relationship with Veronica, it won’t hurt when she leaves her because that’s how Mia views the world. Always waiting to be left. Always feeling that she isn’t worthy of time or love.

The couples gather at the Salazar’s before the dance. Felix and Wendy bond over homemade beauty products and Lake acts the fool. I think I like this strange theater girl that makes her own eyeshadow from beets. She’s the Luna Lovegood of the Simonverse. Are we still allowed to talk about the characters the lady in the Scottish castle invented? Is it too soon? No matter. Armando and Isabel are getting along, playful teasing over picture taking ensues. Victor notes that they seem good, and they say they are going to figure out how to be better for the kids. I’m not fooled. Them making it better no doubt involves a word that sounds like separation.

Lake steals Mia away from Victor at the dance, which gives Victor and Benji an opportunity to make sad heart eyes at one another. Benji follows Victor into the bathroom and they talk about the kiss they shared. Shared. Andrew emerges from a stall because of course they weren’t alone. Kids these days are such amateurs. Everyone knows you always always check for feet. If the topic of discussion is more serious—international espionage or contract killing—you push all the stall doors open. Benji has forgiven Victor for the kiss they shared. As you can see, I’m still not over the one sided kiss narrative. Andrew looked the ass emerging from the stall. Andrew, my man, I’m trying to like you, but you make it so hard. Victor goes after him and tries to explain but Mia interrupts. Andrew stands smug with one of the jerks that wrote on Felix’s face at Mia’s house party.

Review break to make note of the obligatory dance scene. There was an obligatory dance scene. It’s where everyone pretends they are in a musical. Lake did some sort of sexy fist pump dance thing that transported us all to a decade none of us remember, but did remind me of my high school theater days. Here is the audience looking through Felix’s eyes. He’s smitten. I’m still not on board.

Oh, Pilar. What happened to us? She ambushes Felix and proceeds to interrogate him about Victor’s life. Pilar, I’m gonna need you to enjoy the dance. Otherwise, you could have stayed home and cornered Victor some other day. Maybe shine a desk lamp in his face. Threaten him with Adrian’s Elsa wand. Something other than stomp around the dance.

In another corner of the dance, Andrew is just staring at Victor like a background enforcer in a mob movie. Give me a break man. While I agree with you on Mia needing to know the truth, stop trying to be the morality police when your interest here is totally selfish. Meanwhile, Dumb Derek is being dumb. He feels weird being at a high school dance with his high school boyfriend. Imagine dating someone in high school and having their activities be high school related. Strange. Here comes Pilar. She’s continuing her investigation and ruining lives by questioning an unprepared Benji. That was not smooth, Benji. It’s almost like he wants to get caught because Derek might be dumb, but he isn’t clueless.

Felix cuts in on Victor and Mia to talk about Pilar's clumsy “burn it all down” investigative style. Victor sees Benji and Derek fighting and realizes he’s the likely cause, but he can’t step into the fray because he needs to intercept Andrew who is approaching Mia. Complicated and messy. We knew it was coming. I’m entertained.

Andrew and Victor talk. He tells Andrew he loves Mia just not in a way that will ever involve sexy times. Andrew says he won’t tell everyone about Victor, but he also tells Victor he isn’t being fair to Mia. Victor brings up his one great night idea, but that idea is a bust at his point. It seems like he’s spent more time away from Mia than with Mia. Just as Victor and Andrew are coming to an understanding, a quarreling Derek and Benji enter stage left. Andrew makes a quick exit as Victor tries to fix Derek and Benji. The fact that Victor and Benji make heart eyes at one another while standing with Derek is probably a bad look. Victor waxes poetic about Benji and takes the blame for the kiss. I’m not going to say it, but you know.

Lake is bored by Kieran and has a meeting at the punch bowl with Felix. Can we talk about the disparity? Lake is spinning lies to uphold her image to Felix. Someone that doesn’t care about image. Felix is keeping it honest even if it isn’t cute because no one wants to hear about Wendy’s bandaids. Lake isn’t being real. Felix is always real, and in keeping with his amazing self, he tells Lake that he just wants her to be happy.

Victor is outside moping or hiding or contemplating. I’m not actually sure what he’s doing, but it’s something involving emotions. Benji joins Victor on the bench and says he broke up with Derek. He finally realized that Derek makes him “feel bad about the stuff he likes to do.” He wants to be with someone that doesn’t make him feel anxious all the time. He wants to be with someone who he can be himself with, and that person is Victor. Victor feels the same way. They kiss. For the record, Benji initiates the kiss, but they need to talk. They have the Mia conversation. They have the you can’t even admit you’re gay conversation. Victor says he’s going to handle both of those things, so they kiss some more. It’s an excellent kiss. Mia sees the enthusiastic kissing. As a member of the audience, you are torn. This is where the story was always headed, and you’re excited for Victor and Benji, but you hurt for Mia.This is Victor’s story though, so the action stays with him as he runs a hand through Benji’s hair before going back to the dance. We get one more lingering look and a sigh.

Victor and Mia are named King and Queen of the Spring Fling. Am I the only one imagining a Carrie at prom scene? Neither of them make it to the stage. Mia is crying to Andrew before they make a hasty exit. Victor is in hot pursuit. Lake quickly assesses the situation, accepts on Mia’s behalf, and invites Felix to accept for Victor. Then she makes a public declaration about liking Felix. Yep, too soon for me, and I’m not here for it. I’ve seen too many teen movies to be moved by this moment. I need heavier lifting from Lake. They kiss on stage yada blah yada blah blah.

Outside, Victor catches up with Mia and Andrew. He tries to explain, but Mia is too wounded to deal with his excuses. When Victor declares Mia his “favorite person,” it's a small victory for platonic friendships between men and women. Seriously, we need more of that on television. A skulking Pilar emerges and makes everything about her. Good grief. Yes, Pilar you’re hurting, but now isn’t the time. Read the room. Were we all really this way?

Andrew takes Mia home and she invites him inside. Yikes. The innuendo jumps off the screen, but Andrew turns her down. He wants to be more than her sex bear or rebound. Mia has to confront her sadness. All of her sadness. She ends up crying in Veronica’s arms. We knew this was coming. A few episodes ago, I would have said I didn’t want this and declared it too cliche. I’ve changed my mind. Mia needs this. She's taking and Veronica is willing to give, but I don't think the bond will hold.

Victor and Pilar walk home arm in arm. It’s unclear whether or not he’s told her the truth, but their closeness leads me to believe he’s told her. Once home, Victor tells his parents he has something to tell them. Then Isabel says they also have something to say. Then Isabel and Armando go first. What?!?!?! Sorry, this is bad writing or bad parenting. When your child says they have to tell you something, you should let them go first. Are they safe? Are they okay? Are the police right behind them? Is someone dead? I get it, they want Victor to have the final words of the season, so the order was born of necessity, but it’s just a glaring misstep. There had to be another way.

Armando and Isabel are finally doing something good for the family. They are separating to see if they belong together because they aren’t okay. They’ve both changed and need to see if they still work as a couple. I’m happy for them. It’s what they need and the right thing for the family. A house divided and all that. Victor almost leaves without telling his parents his truth, but he finally finally takes Simon’s advice, and turns to say “I’m gay.”

Here we are! It’s the penultimate episode. We want a Season 2, right?

The episode opens with Victor scrolling through pictures of his time in NY. I can’t believe he got away with leaving town.

Victor calls Felix on the walkie from episode 1. It’s a cute little callback to the beginning of their friendship and serves as a reminder of how close they’ve become. When they meet outside, Victor is wearing Simon’s jacket. It’s his superhero cape or coat of many colors. Those are the same thing, right? Dolly’s coat not the Bible’s. This is Victor’s moment, but he needs Felix to turn away from him so he doesn’t lose his nerve. Once he tells Felix he’s into guys, Felix hugs him and says he doesn’t know the perfect thing to say but he’s happy he told him and it changes nothing between them. Let me say it again, Felix deserves the whole world. Oh, and Victor confesses that he kissed Benji.

It’s the first day of piano lessons. Seems like it would be cause for celebration, the person you love doing what they love, but jealousy rears its ugly head. Armando simply can't wish Isabel a great day. He decides to interrogate her about her students. I truly get Armando’s insecurity, but this can’t continue. They need to make some choices, and those decisions might hurt, but the state of their relationship has to hurt more.

Spring Fling is on the horizon. How is it spring? Anyway, Felix wants to ask his not girlfriend, Lake, to the dance. Victor, who from all the available evidence sucks at relationships, gives Felix some advice about Lake. As far as advice goes, it’s good advice, but we all know Lake is going to say to no to Felix. Lake wants Felix the way she wants him, and her telling Mia in the last episode was neither concession nor growth. It was a bone. A mangled bone that a dog used for a few hours. As you might be able to tell, I am highly displeased by this “relationship.”

Victor plans to tell Mia the truth privately. Felix gives him a little push towards Mia in the school hallway. When he approaches Mia, she isn’t exactly happy to see him, and no one blames her for that. He’s been a pretty crappy boyfriend, and he knows it, so he apologizes. Mia lets the audience in on a little accepted truth—apologizing doesn’t mean the other person has to forgive you. There should be no expectation with your apology. She does forgive him though, and they make plans. Harold and Veronica are going to a concert, so they’ll have the house to themselves.

Felix and Lake are back in the closet. Shocking. Come on, Felix! Felix brings up the dance. Lake doesn’t want to go to the dance, and she uses his hormones and lack of executive functioning to distract him. Her bedroom. No parents. The dysfunction.

Benji is transferring coffee shops. He has a bit of an attitude. I’m not feeling it. Correct, Benji, your relationship with Derek isn’t perfect. In fact, it actually sucks, and he’s a jerk to you. Also this narrative about just Victor doing to the kissing needs to stop. Victor started it, but Benji participated. Why is Benji acting like he was pinned to a wall and Victor forced kisses upon him? I know it’s his guilt. I know it’s because Benji realizes the attraction is mutual, but changing locations is a wee bit dramatic. I’m frustrated at this attempt to rewrite the history between them. The song, Benji. The drawing, Benji. The heart eyes, Benji. The ignoring your boyfriend's call, Benji. And the kiss, Benji!

Lake’s mom comes home early, so Felix hides under the bed. Mom sees Felix’s “boy bag.” What does that even mean? Boy bag? What’s a boy bag? Lake’s mom is a caricature. Overbearing, image and status obsessed. She takes potshots at Lake about her weight, her grades, her clothes, and her body. This was brutal. I love that they touched on body shaming though, and it gives us a closer look at what makes Lake tick, which her character needed. I still want Felix to be done with her, but this was a good moment.

Simon comes through with some advice for Victor: “rip the gay band aid off” when it comes to telling Mia, and write Benji a letter that apologizes and explains. Simon has some experience with pissing off friends. Victor writes the letter, and I’m still not okay with this rewritten history where it was all Victor’s fault.

Armando sees a man leave the apartment and flips out. Then a little boy emerges from the bathroom. We all knew the man was a dad, right? We also knew Armando was going to jump to conclusions. Did they just move or have they explored therapy? They can’t keep going like this.

Just as Victor gears up to tell Mia, Harold and Veronica arrive. Detective Mia is at it again. Water, no sushi, hands over stomach - Veronica’s pregnant. Mia’s right this time though. Also, they’re getting married. Mia is floored and unhappy. She must feel like she’s losing everything, her mother and now her father. This baby needs every hug.

Lake is so embarrassed by what her mother says that she just wants Felix to leave, but he brings Lake to his apartment. His mom suffers from depression and part of its manifestation is through hoarding. Felix lets her into his life because he wants Lake to know that where he lives is not a reflection of who he is. Just like the way her mom sees her isn’t a reflection of who she is. Feeling they’ve deepened their connection, Felix once again shoots his shot with Lake. He wants them to go to the dance. She turns him down again, admitting that she cares too much what people think. Felix stands up for himself and ends things. This is character development and growth. He keeps learning and growing. He’s a beautifully written character, and the show’s constant winner.

Victor finds Mia in her room. It seems to be her safe space. As suspected, she feels like her dad is moving on and leaving her behind. Victor tells her that she is her dad’s "whole world." Once Mia kisses him, you can see in the sag of Victor’s shoulders. There was no way he was going to tell her after the day she had. This is an understandable choice, but I don’t think it’s going to save anyone from heartache in the end.

Things are tense at the Salazar's. Armando wants Isabel to stop with the piano lessons, but she’s tired of being the family punching bag. Armando’s big secret is not big or surprising. And not affair level. He beat up his boss. Shrug. Violence is never okay, but I’m not going to pretend like I don’t get it. As evolved as we think we are, impulse and emotion are still our primary currency. Isabel says Armando beating Roger is why they moved, but if she hadn’t cheated he wouldn’t have beat up Roger, and if he hadn’t . . . and on it goes. Her logic is beyond flawed, a questionable cause fallacy. Truth is, they both look bad. Victor walks in on them fighting and tells them he’s over it, and they make home feel crappy. He wants them to fix their messy mess. I’m not so sure Victor is going to like the way they fix their mess of a marriage, but he’s right. No one wants to grow up in a house with a collapsing foundation.

Remember the note Victor wrote to Benji? Well, Pilar finds it. Then she reads it. Boo, Pilar. And borrowing from Lucifer's playbook she speaks the title of the episode.

How will it all end? It’s all very much Willy Wonka’s “Wondrous Boat Ride” at the moment, but I have some pretty solid guesses about how all our friends end season 1. What about you?

Alihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05729548459961056039noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29964715.post-82337652499935559872020-07-02T22:30:00.000+01:002020-07-02T22:30:09.272+01:00Love, Victor - Boys' Trip - Reviews: We Are FamilyIdentity, self-acceptance, and forgiveness are the real winners in this episode. Self-respect also joined the party but with varying degrees of success.

Victor uses parental guilt and cluelessness to his advantage. He creates an entire weekend basketball camp because he needs to see Simon. With one 22-hour bus ride and very little advance notice, Victor is off to see life beyond high school and family. Guess what though? Simon isn’t in NY. He’s in NJ, so he sends Bram to meet Victor.

Back in Creekwood, Mia is pissed that Victor has bailed on her for the weekend. How many times does your boyfriend of a few months have to piss you off before you think about dumping him? Instead of dumping Victor, Mia starts snarky flirting with Andrew after he compliments the teacher. Can we call it flirting? Or is it just attention-seeking behavior? Or both? Her comment about him making a move on anyone is just odd since he’s spent seven episodes only making a move on her.

Andrew and Mia aren’t the only in class texters. Lake texts Felix about meeting up later for some sexy times, but accidentally sends it to Mia. This will come back to bite Lake. Felix gets in on the action, and they all get Saturday detention because students only think they’re sneaky. Does this mean we’ll be treated to a The Breakfast Club homage? There is always an homage to The Breakfast Club.

Lake and Felix are making out in what appears to be a very well lit, not at all concealed hallway at school. This is covert? Maybe because it’s Saturday they feel emboldened? Lake is still embarrassed by Felix. Come on Felix. You’re better than this. You deserve better than this. I need you to love yourself. When they part, Lake goes to sit with Mia who spots a hickey. Mia is on the case. She uses the hickey and Lake talking to Andrew as proof that the two are secretly hooking up.

Victor meets Bram and Simon’s roommates - Justin (Tommy Dorfman), Ivy (Friday Chamberlain), and Kim (River Gallo). They are too much for Victor and the few baby steps he took out of the closet are erased, so he lies and claims to be Bram and Simon’s pre-frosh. Wait? NYU? Bram goes to Columbia. Well, book Bram goes to Columbia. The roommates invite Victor to Messy Boots, but the words drag show seem to terrify him. In fact, Victor is now in a perpetual state of discomfort and fear. I don’t think his face has relaxed since he stepped into the apartment. Bram pulls Victor aside and asks him about the lie. Victor explains that he just isn’t feeling comfortable with a bunch of people he doesn’t know, and it’s all a bit too “gay” for him. It’s time to “butch” it up, so Bram takes him to play basketball. On the basketball court, for the first time since he arrived, Victor visibly relaxes. So Bram let’s him know he just played in a gay league. And he zeroes in on Victor’s insecurity, that being gay means one thing and looks one way. Victor has fallen into the trap of the single story, but Bram assures him “that there’s no one way to be gay.” So true. There’s no one way to be anything.

Back in Creekwood, Isabel in an effort to win over Pilar takes her for a cartilage piercing. It’s such a small thing, but I was so happy to see them sitting in an actual piercing shop instead of a swivel chair in the middle of a mall. Tip: getting pierced with a needle instead of a piercing gun is less traumatic for your body, usually results in an easier heal, and is less likely to introduce bacteria because needles are sterile whereas guns are just disinfected. This concludes my public service announcement. Pilar was sneaky and added a tongue piercing. I’m sure Isabel and Armando are going to freak out, but it could have been worse and much lower.

Mia is angry cleaning graffiti off the walls at school while watching Lake and Andrew talk and joke like normal people. She tells Felix that Lake and Andrew are hooking up, which sparks a fire in him, so the cleaning couples swap. Mia isn’t suspicious of Felix’s behavior? She probably doesn’t notice because she’s dealing with her own jealousy. When Felix confronts Lake about Mia’s claim, she tells him that jealousy is hot. Jealousy is only hot in fiction, Lake.

Here we go! Felix takes itty bitty baby steps to stand up for himself in hopes that Lake will agree to make their “relationship” public. Is what they’re doing considered a relationship? Lake tells Felix that she’s embarrassed by him and wants to keep things on the DL. I need this Felix and Lake thing to end.

When Victor sees Justin’s clothes and makeup, he asks why so many gay people like dressing up in drag. Justin learns him a little lesson. He shows Victor a picture of him with his parents. He’s wearing a conservative suit, and he looks absolutely dejected. In a powerful moment for the characters and the audience, Justin alludes to suicidal ideation. Suicide attempts for LGBTQIA+ youth are significantly higher than that of their heterosexual counterparts, fives times as high for some groups within the community. Justin assures Victor that he was playing a character when he was denying who he was while living with his parents and practicing a religion that hates him. That inauthentic Justin was him in drag. The clothes and makeup he wears now are just Justin being Justin. Victor finally feels safe enough to open himself up to the group and admits he’s afraid of how his parents will react. Group hug. That was cleansing.

At the Salazars, Armando is in the middle of an I told you so with Isabel. Isabel explains how much it hurts that Pilar is still angry with her about the affair. She just wants her daughter back. She pushes at Armando because Pilar isn’t angry with him because she doesn’t know what he did. I’d almost forgotten about his dirty little secret. I’m starting to think it isn’t actually dirty. It’s been too secret for too long. The impact of the reveal is going to fizzle. Armando goes to talk to Pilar about her anger towards Isabel. He wants her to forgive her mom. Pilar wants to know if he’s forgiven Isabel. He lies to his daughter. The eyes tell the story. It works though because Pilar cuddles up to her mother. This happyish home is on the verge of an explosion.

Lone Stone is the horrible and false nickname Andrew gave Felix years ago after some unfortunate accident. Felix decides it's the root of all his troubles with Lake and stands up for himself. Andrew claims it’s just him being the funny guy, but Felix unleashes telling him, “Nobody’s laughing because you’re funny. They’re laughing because they don’t want to be the next victim of a dumb cliched jock straight out of an ‘80s movie.” You can see in Andrew’s face that he just realized he’s a bully. Really, Andrew? How did you miss that you’re a bully? I don’t love that Felix only related Andrew’s torment to dating and girls instead of his overall mental well-being and self-respect, but 16.

Let’s check in on Messy Boots. It’s a play on Kinky Boots, right? Everything is going swimmingly. A boy flirts with Victor who makes it awkward. Bram and the roommates tell Victor he’s going to break a lot of hearts because he’s a cutie. Then Ivy let’s it slip that they know about Benji. Has she had too much to drink? Maybe, but it’s really just an injection of drama. Turns out Simon has been sharing Victor’s secrets. Victor flips. I get that, but did Victor just try to get righteous about lying? Should we count the times, Victor? You’ve lied three times just in this episode. I get it though. No one wants their business shared with strangers. It shatters Victor’s safe space, so he walks out of the club.

Felix really got to Andrew, so he asks Mia if he’s a bad guy. She thinks deep down he’s good but surface level he’s a jerk. I agree. For most of the episodes, I thought Andrew was a jerk to his core, but the more history I get the less one-note he becomes. I’m not sure his redemption arc is going to be enough for most of the viewing audience. Andrew course corrects by putting some pro-Felix graffiti on the walls. When Felix sees that he has two big balls, he raises a triumphant fist as he exits. Another little homage to The Breakfast Club.

Simon with the perfect timing. He looks rather cold. Victor thinks Simon has been laughing about him with his friends. Simon tells him that he’s not a gay guru and he didn’t want to misstep or give Victor terrible advice. Simon says he never had a girlfriend, but Bram did. What are they doing? That doesn’t track with the books or the movie. Book Simon had multiple girlfriends. Movie Simon had at least one. Why! What’s the purpose of these cosmetic changes? Pick a Simon universe and stay true to at least that one. Anyway, each of Simon’s friends has something to offer. Something that would help Victor. Girlfriend. Religious parents. Simon explains that the best things about the LGBTQIA+ community is having a community of people who can all share their experiences. Simon gives Victor his jacket. It’s like the passing of the torch except we all want to take a torch to the jacket because it’s not cute. Time for dancing and a tiny bit of flirting. In the midst of all this, Mia calls Victor. It goes straight to voicemail because he’s having the best night of his life.

There’s a reckoning coming. And maybe more Benji kisses.

Nothing about the end of the Fall/Spring TV season was normal and as such we've had an unusual start to the Summer TV season. Even despite all the unexpected trials and tribulations that the industry is experiencing at the moment, performers are still delivering stellar performances. Let's go.

Simon wants to know if Mia and Victor did the nasty? Victor admits he choked and says everything else about there relationship is perfect, so does sex really matter? It depends, Victor. Victor and Mia are incredibly cute together. During their school hallway walk and talk, Victor agrees to save Mia from Harold’s lame university auction by going as her date.

Elsewhere, Felix wants Victor to help him decide on a portmanteau for his “relationship” with Lake. Unfortunately, Lake is firmly on the side of it never happened and it’s never happening again. Felix comes crashing down from his high and is suddenly miserable.

You know who else is miserable? Pilar. She’s living in her recent past, stalking the Instagram pages of her friends in Texas. It just struck me that Pilar probably hasn’t made any new friends. She had a rocky start at Creekwood, which no doubt tainted her reputation.

The adults are in crisis. Isabel wants to go back to giving piano lessons, and Armando gives a firm no. His no was obviously gross even though we know why it happened. Isabel is fully grown, so she wasn’t asking permission. She was attempting to have a conversation because unilateral decisions without discussion is a death knell to relationships.

When Victor walks into work, Benji is in a tank top. We all notice the way Victor’s mouth falls open when Benji does hot boy things, right? It’s so Pavlovian. Anyway, the ancient espresso machine needs to be fixed. Benji is not enthusiastic about road tripping to Willacoochee with Sarah (Beth Littleford), so he puts his tank top to good use and appeals to Victor’s human side, the one drowning in lust. Our boys are taking a road trip, even though Victor promised Mia he’d go to Harold’s soiree. Raise your hand if you think this ends well.

Felix goes looking for Victor because he needs to talk to him about his Lake troubles, but Pilar will do. Pilar helps Felix realize he’s pathetic. Pilar shares that she is also pathetic. Is this a burgeoning friendship? I hope so.

Let’s get back to the road trip. Benji opens up a little. This is a good thing because he can’t just be the sweet, artistic, hot boy. He needs some depth along with the smiles, tank tops, and hand sweeps through thick locks. He used to go to Dollywood with his dad. Victor’s surprised. He didn’t take Benji as a Dolly Parton fan. Hey, Victor? Everyone is a Dolly fan. She's a badass. Benji’s relationship with his father changed once he came out to him. You can see the sadness on Benji’s face, but we also know that it’s something Victor fears happening in his own life. We aren’t allowed much time to live in that sadness because dumb Derek calls. Benji ignores his call. Did you see the light in Victor’s eyes? Did you hear the lie in Benji’s voice?

Isabel took Armando’s “no” about as seriously as I did. She used the family’s finances as a reason to get back to teaching piano, but it’s clear that it’s what she loves. People shouldn’t have to give up what they love. Armando doesn’t want Isabel teaching again because that’s how she ended up getting physical with Roger. Isabel asks a good question, “When are you going to start trusting me again?”. It’s also a hard question. Once trust is broken, it’s hard to regain, but a relationship without it is doomed.

Felix and Pilar are still working through their pathetic together, but they’ve reached the awkward silence stage. Somehow they leave behind the awkward and start getting real with one another. I love that Pilar recognizes she isn’t an easy one. Same, Pilar. She sort of suggests that they get coffee, but Felix makes her actually ask him. I want this. I want Pilar and Felix. This is the portmanteau we should be figuring out, not Felix and Lake. I said what I said.

In Willacoochee, some slow moving old timer is set to repair the espresso machine. Victor is rightfully worried that he’s going to disappoint Mia. Benji is zen about the whole thing and suggests they head to the thrift shop. It’s time for fun and a fashion show. I’m trying to figure out if the thrift store moment is meant to serve as a contrast to their respective romantic relationships? Victor and Benji are carefree with one another. Victor is admiring a suit in the mirror when he catches a glimpse of a shirtless Benji. The tank top got him to go on a road trip, so shirtless Benji could probably convince him to rob a bank.

Andrew shows up at the fundraiser. Mia and Andrew take a walk down memory lane. Their history is long. I like them together. They seem easy and effortless in this environment. This makes their recent interactions all the more confusing. They were once friends and more than friends. It’s clear they both still think about what they used to have, but now Andrew acts the role of the jealous jerk and Mia plays the part of the wronged ex. I get Andrew’s jealousy, but I’m not seeing any evidence that Mia was wronged, which begs these questions—Why have the writers let the viewers think so poorly of Andrew for so long? Is there enough time to undo this methodical character assassination?

Back in Willacoochee, Sarah tells Benji to stay the night if the espresso machine isn’t ready. We can all relax, the espresso machine is ready, so Victor can make it to the fundraiser. I’m kidding, no writer would pass up this opportunity. Not only will they be staying overnight, there will only be one bed. Leaning into tropes. Here it comes. Victor lies, so he can spend the night with Benji. It was the shirtlessness. Victor was powerless. He lies to Benji then he lies to Mia.

Mia says she isn’t mad, but a lurking Andrew knows better. He comes bearing grilled cheese, but ruins the moment with a kiss. Say what you will, but I’m not convinced that kiss was one sided. Also, mystery solved. Mia instigated the sex between them but acts like it never happened. Andrew is hurt, which is totally understandable. Mia called him because a call from her mother sent her spiraling, which is totally understandable. She tells Andrew that he was just a terrible idea. Ouch! Worst apology ever. When you use someone, put a bit more emotion into your apology. Here’s the thing, you can hurt for totally legitimate reasons. Sometimes you hurt people because you’re hurting, but it doesn’t excuse your behavior. You don’t get a pass. Great, now I feel sorry for Andrew.

A quick montage of a few moments: At the coffee shop, Felix and Pilar enjoy themselves until Lake arrives and ruins the moment. Isabel and Armando sing together. It’s Selena. Armando apologizes for being an ass. There is no way this lasts, but I want it to last. Veronica and Mia's relationship grows a little. Veronica’s story reveals something about Mia’s relationship with Victor. Her story boils down to people showing up for the people they love. Yes, they do. The audience didn’t miss it, but did Mia?

Back to One Bed Willacoochee. Turns out Benji drank a lot when he was struggling with accepting himself, and drove through a restaurant. I’m enjoying this rainy night confession because it’s filling out Benji’s character while increasing the intimacy between the future boyfriends. They share heart eyes before Benji goes to sleep. No ways this stays platonic. Victor wakes Benji with a gentle touch and that’s when the kissing starts. Victor may have started it, but Benji responds and he is all in until he remembers dumb Derek. When Benji pulls away, Victor realizes what he’s done. Just to be clear, Victor doesn’t run away because the two of them cheated. Victor runs away because the dam finally broke and he has to confront his sexuality. This is a big event for the show. There’s no turning back now. Victor does apologize before running off. Do you think Benji’s deep breaths, heavy sigh, and closed eyes after Victor leaves are because he realizes the part he played in getting them to this moment? Is he that self-aware?

Victor needs Simon. He tells him that he kissed Benji, and that it was the worst thing he could have done because he realizes that he can’t keep denying who he is, but he hates what he is. He doesn’t want his life to be hard. And this is the best message for those people still under the ignorant impression that being LGBTQIA+ is a choice. No one chooses hard.

Simon writes back. He tells Victor that he’s perfect just as he is. He wishes Victor could see what his life is like in NY and that he could wrap Victor in the hug he’s needed since episode one. Suddenly, Victor starts listening to Simon and takes all his words as an invitation. Victor’s headed to The City That Never Sleeps.
