Justyna: It's very disappointing to learn of the series cancellation just when we've reached the next chapter in the story. I've certainly enjoyed watching the show and was excited to continue the mystery. In the final moment of the series Maura wakes up in a starship called Prometheus, surrounded by the other Kerberos passengers, placed under suspended animation. She also discovers that it's the year 2099, not 1899 and her brother leaves her a message to welcome her to reality. The end. Just when the possibilities were endless and with so many questions left unanswered. It was a great and engaging cliffhanger to finish a season on, a perfect place to craft some theories, so if there's any chance at all for the series to still be saved, I'd be happy to continue to support it and watch wherever that might be. Kudos to the cast & crew for all their work!
Laura B: Father Renaud doesn't just hit Sister Mary, but Teonna gets another round from him too. If it wasn't hard enough to witness a most-beloved Elizabeth Bennett (Ehle) in the role of a school-teaching nun who beats up the hands of the free-spirited Teonna Rainwater (Aminah), the show found a way to be even more horrific when at first Father Renaud seeks justice by doing the same act to Mother Mary before Teonna's eyes, but then his taste for justice quickly turns into some rather disturbing abuse when he beats Teonna again! I've seen Sebastian Roché play some bad customers before, but this role may yet take the cake! Overall, 1923 had a pretty amazing opening episode!

GHOSTS, "The Christmas Spirit", December 25th, 2022, Actors: Rose McIver, Utkarsh Ambudkar, The Scene: Sam gets possessed by Thor
Chris C: Rose McIver gets to relive her best iZombie life as a disgruntled Thor pretends to be Sam while talking to Jay in the kitchen. Everything from McIver's elevated pitch to her glances and obsession with food is brilliantly executed and perfectly ridiculous, in a way that only a show like Ghosts can be.
María S: Lyra wakes up while Marisa is sleeping, so she tries to take this chance to escape from the place her mother is keeping her. But the opportunity fades away when Mrs. Coulter's daemon leads her to the girl, so she sedates her again, while Lyra tells Marisa that she will never be safe with her. I think it's really sad to see that, after everything that has happened, the only way Mrs. Coulter can keep her daughter next to her is by keeping her unconscious.

SLOW HORSES, "Old Scores", December 30th, 2022, Actors: Gary Oldman and more
The Scene: The Slough House pays tribute to Min (and Dickie)
Folie-lex: Against Taverner's instructions, Lamb makes sure that Min (and Dickie) get a proper "Joe's memorial" and the whole crew is there to pay their respects. He might be an insufferable ass but one thing is for sure, Jackson Lamb proves yet again that he absolutely has the proper respect for his agents.
Cristina A: Todd confronts his married sister about setting up a profile on a dating app. During an investigation for a client who is suing because her idea for a dating app is being stolen by a major corporation, Todd and his mother discover that his married sister, Allison, has set up a dating profile on the app. Todd confronts his sister and she admits that she set up the profile. She shares that her whole life has been decided for her by her mother, she’s never been able to do the things that she dreamed of and hoped for. Even becoming a doctor was her mother's dream, not hers. As was marrying her husband. She wanted to see what her life would be like if she went down another path. Todd and Allison have a difficult relationship and her being able to confide in him her deepest feelings, was a huge step in their path to repair things between them. It was the first time the viewers got to see the deeply personal side of Allison, and understand the struggles she faced living in her mother's shadow growing up.
Justyna: It's a good thing we have a sweet and heartwarming moment also highlighted in the article, because my choice is anything but that. In fact, it's one of the most shocking and cruel revelations on the show. It left me completely stunned and is still very memorable today. In the opening scene of the series finale, we finally get an answer to the question "what really happened to Sylvester Pemberton" and it's so much worse than I've imagined. Years after his death, Starman is brought back to life by his killer and the ISA... but only for a moment. He barely begins to learn of their evil plan before his brain is removed from his body, with him very much awake and aware of the fact. It's beyond dark and is a powerful reminder that "Stargirl" never stayed away from telling the painful stories in addition to the hopeful ones. The only good thing about this moment is that the audience gets to know just how much Sylvester has truly cared about his best friend, when he asks about Pat with his final breath. It also makes it so much worse that Ultra-Humanite has spent all this time slowly destroying Starman's memory and legacy. Luckily, as we learn in the epilogue, we end the series knowing that JSA has eventually found his brain and saved Sylvester. I only wish we could have seen his true reunion with Pat. Regardless, I really enjoyed this show and will miss it dearly. Thank you and kudos to the entire cast & crew for all the wonderful work on the series.
Joshua: Courtney tries to tell her stepfather that he is a hero and she defended him against the Ultra-humanite and Pat tells her that he already knows. Courtney has a very difficult relationship with her biological father throughout the series but she eventually comes to the realization that Pat (her stepdad) is the father she always wanted. That's a major part of her series character arc. This final scene as a result marks an end to Courtney's arc as it shows that Pat and Courtney have grown close throughout the show's run. From Courtney being initially annoyed with Pat and unaccepting of him as her stepdad in the show's pilot episode to eventually becoming closer to Pat when their superhero adventures begin. It's a short but very important scene that shows just how special and well planned this television show was.
Folie-lex: Since Beth gave a shout-out to the Chenford final scene in 5.09 (the nomination that I completely endorse BTW) this completely unties my hands in order to submit their final scene of 5.08. As Chenford have spent the whole episode trying to get through this tough day all while attempting to regain a hold on their current shaky dynamic, Tim watches Chris push his "let's live together" plan on a very frustrated and uncertain Lucy. He confronts her about it at the end of the episode and FINALLY, after approximately 3 years in the show's timeline (and 5 seasons for the show's audience), these two put to words their growing feelings, admit it to each other and have an honest conversation about doing something about it... and The Rookie fans REJOICE!
Beth W: Tim asks Lucy out on a date. The Rookie is finally doing it! They are pulling the trigger on Chenford and I for one am SO excited.

TREASON, "Episode 1", December 26th, 2022, Actors: Olga Kurylenko, Ciarán Hinds, Charlie Cox and more, The Scene: The opening scene
María S: I think the opening scene is a good setup for the show since it gives you a full idea of the story and its main characters and does a good job in keeping you interested in how everything will unfold from here, and how everything will intertwine.
Justyna: I've been really enjoying this new fantasy series, I like its unique feeling, the adventure and the characters. It reminds me of a Dungeons & Dragons campaign that I've seen a few years ago. And Christian Slater was a great fit to bring back the 80s to this modern take on Willow. Allagash is quite a character, we've only just met him and yet we've witnessed his many different sides all in the course of a single episode. Similarly to Hubert, he's quite a scene-stealer and immediately a memorable character to cross paths with. Allagash is brave but foolish, friendly but not always loyal, he's a good fighter and far from good songwriter. He doesn't hesitate to steal the Kymerian cuirass but chooses to come back, seeking redemption for his past mistakes. He ultimately sacrifices himself to give the others a chance to escape and fights against an army of trolls, right after leaving Kit with a message to protect Elora Danan. The final shot of him falling, defeated by the trolls was another sad reminder of all the lives already lost in this fight. Kudos to cast & crew for their work on the series!

Episode 7, The Clouded Mountain

The penultimate episode of His Dark Materials opens with chaos at the Republic of Asriel. It’s the war to end all wars - it’s finally here – and Heaven has finally responded to Asriel’s threats – the capacitors are ready for Asriel. He wants to get the civilians out of the way – whilst using the capacitors for the abyss. The way forward all depends on Lyra however – if Metatron can control the children or their daemons, the future is theirs – which puts Asriel’s long-standing belief in science and fact at the mercy of prophecies foretold by witches as the Clouded Mountain draws closer. Everything is all down to Eve now; and the stakes couldn’t be higher – but it gives Asriel a plan – they don’t have to win the battle; they just must protect the boy and the girl and have them reunite with the daemons.

The concise, crisp writing of His Dark Materials sets out the mission objectives for the final two episodes brilliantly before the memorable credits even roll – and Lorne Balfe’s triumphant score is always a thing of beauty in whatever format – able to capture the epic scope of the series. I’m going to miss it, one way or another – like I’m going to miss spending time in this world.

Will wants to go looking for the daemons and leave Lyra in the sunny world; but Lyra doesn’t plan on leaving him just yet – there’s an out for both of them offered from the start; but it’s them against the world. Asriel’s plan to deploy the energy surge from the abyss might be powerful enough to destabilise the entire clouded mountain; and pull Metatron into the abyss with sheer physical force – to him, flesh is stronger than spirit – and Asriel was born to change the worlds. He’s still grappling with the destiny that he thought was his having shifted to Lyra’s – but he can, at the very least, buy her time. This puts Asriel and Mrs. Coulter on the same page for the first time since maybe the series started – parents motivated for the love of their child. But Mrs. Coulter warns Asriel of its dangers: it’s not just death, but eternal oblivion – and she believes that whatever he’s planning, it isn’t going to work they’re doomed. Rather than being told how everything’s going to end – Mrs. Coulter already knows how it’s going to end – her love for Lyra is her salvation, and at once her downfall.

The rallying cry for Asriel’s last stand showcases his motivational speech ability – it’s memorable and gives proper Return of the King vibes – I’m still in such awe of seeing the grand feat that Jack Thorne has pulled off in matching the sheer scale of The Amber Spyglass on screen – with Francesca Gardiner maximising Phillip Pullman’s potential on screen this episode. To Asriel, lives are beautiful and precious – they should not have to live under fear and oppression; even if they may no longer fear the fate of death – it’s not an ending, but a journey back into life. That’s what the battle has always been leading towards – creating a paradise here, on Earth - life confronting death. “We are free” – is such a triumphant moment for its characters – and it’s impossible not to get chills; all inspired by Lyra’s actions in the deep abyss – but that triumph is short-lived. The Kingdom of Heaven is nigh.

The Angels headed Asriel’s way are growing by the second – and he’s glad he doesn’t have to win this fight. Seeing the Witches assemble in the sky showcases the feat of the technical team behind His Dark Materials, you wouldn’t really complain if you were watching The Amber Spyglass in the cinema as a film. The sheer power of the Witches assembled – even against such a mighty foe as the Angels; is a delight – seeing the scale of the fight on the land and in the skies relishes the encounter in a way that rivals the best fantasy epics – clear cut and although obviously, a touch shy short of a full last charge of the Rohirrim a, a marvel that we even got anything close to looking this good on a BBC budget – remember, His Dark Materials has shied away from the combat before so this is nothing new – but to see it unfold left me in awe.

Seeing the Spectres return and be summoned away from the soldiers by Mrs. Coulter and banished into ruins was full Leia in The Last Jedi, big bold, epic – the best Mrs. Coulter has been all series. Jack Thorne has such a skilled way at balancing the action – splitting it between Serafina and Asriel’s forces in the ground and Serafina’s daemon, who finds Pan on the surface – but how are Will and Lyra going to reach him through all of this? And don’t forget – Will’s daemon is lurking out there too. Luckily for them they’ve received help – from Commander Ogunwe. Ogunwe believes that the Angels can sense when Will uses the blade; and will know that they’re separated from their daemons. The journey to Asriel’s camp must be on foot – and he’s able to convince the relatively stubborn Lyra and Will to follow him, for now.

Pan is found by Serafina and we get to meet Will’s daemon for the first time too, a cat, for now – but they’re just as bitter that they’ve been left behind. Lyra puts doubt in Ogunwe’s mind – Asriel uses people, that’s all he does – but to Ogunwe, who was there for Asriel’s speech, it’s one proud father. But Metatron continues to weaponize creatures; this time – it’s the harpies of the Land of the Dead against Ogunwe and his troops who order Lyra and Will to the tower; the show borrowing inspiration from World War One as a conflict makes it a marked change for the battlefields, and the darkly shot battle sequences obscure the need for an abundance of CGI and create a sense of horror to rival the sheer spectacle of it all.

Metatron’s voice is completely seductive and whispers inside the voicers of the soldiers – getting inside their heads in a lethal; persuasive way. Strike down their enemies, and they’ll be forgiven – resist, and be damned. Mrs. Coulter is smart enough not to fall victim to the voice; but the eeriness of Asriel’s abandoned base creates a calm – slowly but surely, the Authority is winning. Which was the plan – all along.

And now, Mrs. Coulter gets to face to face with the Metatron – who takes an interest in her. To Metatron, Mrs. Coulter is an asset – to be converted; and Asriel is taken in without his daemon to what is presumably, heaven itself – the empty grand white halls; that pair the mother and father of Eve in the same universe, without a daemon – although Mrs. Coulter’s daemon is aware of what to do without her. As scheming as ever, Mrs. Coulter tries to pledge service to Metatron – but he’s smart enough not to be deceived by her. A cesspit of moral filth is a new insult, I must admit – and a creative one. Through Mrs. Coulter we get to learn about Metatron and who he was before he turned, ruthless but fallible. We’ve seen how seductive Metatron has been throughout this episode and to see him in the flesh – and Alex Hassell’s performance raises to match both McAvoy and Wilson – offering Mrs. Coulter a way to become an angel.

Harry Wootliff’s direction has been grand this episode and it’s a real feat having her on board. I loved both True Things and Only You and her feature film experience gives the characters the sense of empathy here. The anger of Asriel is shown by the sheer brilliance of McAvoy – who is consistent whether he’s playing Metatron or himself – calling out the man named Enoch that the Authority was before. The combat is swift, bloody, and brutal – and His Dark Materials wastes no time in propelling itself forward – testing Asriel and Mrs. Coulter to the limits; their faith and their commitment to each other – and it’s Mrs. Coulter who promises Metatron their deliverance.

Will finally gets to meet his daemon, but Pan is devastated – how could you bear it? He asks Lyra – as Asriel is pushed to the edge of the abyss. Just before Metatron can exact his vengeance; Will and Lyra escape with their daemons – and Mrs. Coulter’s ruse is revealed – as if anyone thought she’d betray her daughter; even for a second – it shows you the power of Ruth Wilson’s performance that you’re never quite sure where she’ll stand – and the monkey daemon activates the bomb put down by Asriel – bringing the walls of Metatron down around them; with both parents involved in a struggle against Metatron. Once again – oh my god, Lorne Balfe here – able to get the emotions out of everyone; plunging Asriel; Mrs. Coulter; and Metatron himself – into the abyss.

And just like that; heaven falls. We watch both Asriel and Mrs. Coulter’s daemons die; fade away – and the emotion that the actors feel is complete on the screen. That’s how you do a send off. That is really, really how you do a send-off. Only the Witches can watch – Serafina in tears; as the survivors are left to pick up the pieces. Their world is free now – and the soldiers under Metatron’s spell are no longer captive. A new dawn comes with the passing of the cloud: and Lyra and Will emerge victorious. Asriel won – and we see Asriel’s Republic free in a new world; embracing a life of paradise that they get to live – and make their own as they so wish.

Episode 8, The Botanic Garden

There’s still the odd few mysteries left as we head into the final episode; even with every victory so far – and it’s great to see the show give Will and Lyra a chance to spend time and take a moment to breathe – it doesn’t seem real to Will, that Metatron was defeated. Lyra’s grappling with Lord Asriel and Mrs. Coulter being her parents and why they did what they did – when viewed for their lens, they were right; but now it’s clear that they were doing the right thing, whilst what Asriel wasn’t doing was forgivable, Lyra doesn’t hate him anymore. Will has been at Lyra’s side more than both her parents, and the two bonding at the pool is some much-needed downtime in the calmness of it all – thanks to the brilliance of Harry Wootliff – these visuals and the on-location shooting – the rare break from the excellent Cardiff locations – really leans into it all.

Pan’s having plenty of guilt about not being near Lyra, however – what if it never feels the same as to what it did before? They’re safe in that world; they believe – but there’s still the dangers of the Magisterium lurking about, strangely absent out of all the factions from the final battle. And Mary Malone – the serpent; someone else who Lyra and Will need to meet according to the Compass. Both Pan and Lyra are examining their weird relationship from their own perspectives – Pan’s worried, but Lyra knows he’s safe.

We’re in Mary’s world now – not Will’s; but where she’s spent much of this season, separated from the main cast. The reunion is optimistic and full of hope – the warm embrace of the two shares their connection from the second series. Mary has that infectiously likeable personality that she shares with just about anyone, easy to get along with and easy to like. Both Mary and Will have come from the same world to bond over – and to Lyra, it’s her favourite – the relaxed and down-to-Earth open prairie of it all feels like a home. Humans are not the pinnacle of evolution according to Mary – and this final episode allows the characters to embrace in the understanding of Dust and whether it was sin – but in fact; it’s the spark that means we’re alive: consciousness. It’s just as good or bad as we are – and occupies everyone. Age and experience give you more of it – and Mary wastes no time in catching Lyra and Will up to speed; showing them the dying trees ravished by the dust disappearing from the world – thought and imagination going with it. This is the price of their victory – dust needs to return. Some great discovery would enable the world and the world of the Mulefas to be saved.

Sometimes you forget how much characters know and don’t know and Mary’s only now, this late on – finding out about daemons which tells you something – but it’s good to get a reminder that on Will’s world; actual nuns can exist too. We get to find out Mary’s motivation behind leaving the nunnery – at a conference in Lisbon on particle physics; which she was celebrating – and met someone – sharing the same butterflies that she felt when she was at school; and couldn’t bear to go back to the convent after that. Would anyone be better off if she promised not to fall into temptation again? The answer is no – and nobody would. There was nobody there to reward her for being good; punisher her for being bad – liberating in every sense of the word. This scene in itself was so beautiful, great for showcasing Mary Malone’s character and giving her a sense of newfound purpose and direction in life – devoting much of the final episode to her story and a calmer moment after action packed penultimate episode – feels like a wise call; and allows His Dark Materials to once more embrace that shared empathy and connection that it was lacking at times – showing two innocents what it was to dare; to dream – something so small and ordinary: love – never so small to those discovering it for the first time. Mary also gets the offer of being able to see her daemon if she wants it – from Serafina – and it’s such a rewarding journey for her too; one of the show’s most important characters.

Father Gomez believes that the serpent’s tongue must be cut out – and isn’t showing any mercy in his dedicated quest – what remains of the Magisterium on his world remains unknown – what is its purpose now? His Dark Materials gives a good effort at always making the VFX feel immersive and creative in the way that they do so – every animal looks completely believable here; naturally interacting with the beautiful landscape around them – but danger is close at every turn; a shared moment of kindness between Will and Lyra – and yet more swimming, is watched – Gomez having a sniper rifle trained on her; is told no – by a mysterious voice of an angel – who tells Gomez that they are not on the same side. To the Angel; Gomez is their servant – an act of devotion to rid the world of sin. But the Angel itself is a familiar face – and love takes a million forms, and those who judge are just afraid. Balthamos fatally crushes Gomez’s daemon, but also dies – vowing not to take the life of an innocent child but has the promise of seeing his own loved one again.

That great discovery that restored dust to the worlds was Lyra and Will – the flow of dust slowing down and returning to normal; the prophecy fulfilled with the love of Eve healing the worlds. It’s a beautiful moment – hope sparking in darkness, the triumph of love over organisation and chaos – all in harmony once more. Freedom has been a big part of His Dark Materials’ whole agenda – and it really has you believe in that sense of discovery – Mary’s role of the Serpent has now ended – but the two can no longer stay in the same worlds – they’ll have to return to their own universes – it’s a heartbreak that we all; book readers at least – knew was coming – but to reach this chapter is such a wonderful moment of triumph that basks in the beauty of it all – with Kirjava, Will’s daemon, now named – and Pan – returning to their humans as they’re forced to separate – losing each other but being reunited – Pan settling as a pine martin, finally – brings a sense of closure to the series that was never going to end in any other way. And just like that – Will gets to meet Kirjava – a cat – for the first time.

Each time the knife makes a cut the flow of dust is disrupted and darkness gets the chance to be released – a plague, a spectre – Will’s been making spectres every time he’s been cutting through worlds. They can’t leave the windows open – and they must choose worlds to be in – but can’t live in others’ worlds for long, their daemons won’t survive. And there it is – the breaking of the two – that followed their moment of happiness together – pure heartbreak – the promise of a reunion in the afterlife. Lyra can’t even read the Alethiometer anymore – a true sign of age, perhaps – it’s not broken anymore, she’s now changed and grown up. The knowledge still exists, but this time, she’ll have to regain it by work.

You have to hand it to the creative team – His Dark Materials is such a triumph – the rare perfect book adaption that pulls off everything that set it out to do. The finale brought real touches of The Doctor/Rose’s farewell in Doomsday (no doubt inspired by Pullman's work, in part), the greatest love that you share being the one that you’re most prepared to die for – is what Mary tells Will; but it’s something that it’s much more romantic to live for it. Not just having these moments of happiness but letting characters seize the future is something that His Dark Materials absolutely needed to get right – and I think it really did – a closed loop if it were a beautiful way no less to say goodbye. I’ll miss this wonderful show – and it feels so odd saying this given it still feels very odd in the first place given that we’re even at The Amber Spyglass at all – let alone The Subtle Knife, let alone an unbastardised version of Northern Lights.
The series ends on such an optimistic, yet heart-breaking note that fully realises these moments from His Dark Materials - Will and Lyra get the promise to move on from each other – but will return in their own worlds for an hour every year to ‘meet’ at the same bench; with Will breaking the knife as soon as he goes through the worlds. Lyra trying to imagine what Will looked like when he’s older will never not draw you to tears – and it’s a tremendous performance once again by Amir Wilson and Dafne Keen, sure to be megastars – the final kiss before departing backed to the end by Lorne Balfe’s dazzling score. And just like that – it’s it; a new adventure begins at the closure of the old one. With Will in his own world – him and Mary the only ones with visible talking daemons. The final montage of Will and Lyra before the shattering of the knife punctures hearts once more – and we get a postscript, as to what the characters have been up to since: dust comes back into the worlds they’ve left behind – making them whole again – and yes, we do find out what happened to these characters going forward: Will returns home to his mother – grows up and becomes a Doctor, and Lyra’s return to Jordan College promises more adventures with both her and Pan – the montage of both characters growing up in their own worlds and becoming older a thing of marvels in its own right.

After watching so many failed adaptions come before it, His Dark Materials; at the second time - has got it absolutely spot on. The benchmark for all future adaptions to be judged upon - Rings of Power and House of the Dragon absolutely need to take note.
Episode 5, No Way Out:

The fifth episode of His Dark Materials takes us into the underworld and the land of the dead; the darkest place in the worlds created by Phillip Pullman. It’s a way to explore the past and bring it back into the light; a way for Lyra and Will to say their goodbyes, encounter those in the past who have helped them along their journey.

After meeting a group of dead characters and journeying deeper in – both Lyra and Will are separated, put through a series of trials. Lyra sees Pan, but a ghost, a vision of Pan – it’s the tricks being played on them. Both led astray – Will is quickly separated. Lyra’s worst fears is present, made manifest in Pan: her guilt of playing the hero has led her here. Whatever it was saying, Will says – it wasn’t true, Lyra is still a good person. This is a pretty hellish vision of the land of the dead – and Lyra makes a statement clear: this can’t be where we all go, forever.

The search for Roger has driven much of the first half of this series and it’s an emotional moment when she finally does see him. How much of Roger’s death was Lyra’s fault, after all? The guilt lies heavy on her – she took him to Asriel to die. And there was that teaser at the beginning of the episode – just because Lyra is looking for Roger doesn’t mean that he wants to be found.

Roger’s changed, so much – and so has Lyra. Their reunion is subtle, tender-hearted and emotional – much of this episode allows Lyra to let her feelings come to light – she shouldn’t have taken him to Asriel, but Roger claims it’s not Lyra’s fault – he wanted to go. It’s an emotional moment and really well done – this is what The Amber Spyglass was building towards in its big, final climax; and Roger and Will finally get the chance to meet – however briefly.

There’s something off about this particular Land of the Dead that Lyra spots instantly and says that they’re breaking Roger out of here as soon as possible. But when Lyra didn’t come; Roger lost all hope – forever – he no longer wants to go back to the real world in the shape or form that he is at the moment. It’s something that was expected even if Lyra could perform the impossible: and they don’t know what they would happen to them when they leave.

Will’s good-natured instinct brings out the best in Lyra – and reminds her of the promise to Pan. Her suggestion is to make a window, a crack from one world to the next: but the subtle knife doesn’t work – the brilliant sound design ensures that there are distinct sounds being made, but Will can only feel knife. And then we see it, the creatures, brought to life – the guardians of the Land of the Dead.

And just like Lyra, it’s Will’s turn to be questioned. To be fed nightmares. Not only is he asked what kind of son abandons his own mother; but she would be fed nightmares too – they shall scream at his inner sleep. Lyra is questioned too – she’s destroyed the lives of everyone that she cares about; if only Will had never met her – and we can see why the child who they helped turned away from them so quickly. This time, it’s Lyra’s turn to stand up – and to confront the creatures. She believed she could defeat them – stand up to them; the true strength of Lyra and Will and everything they’ve been through unstoppable together.

And now, they have a solution to escape the land of the dead: with the subtle knife on higher ground.

Meanwhile, Mrs. Coulter and Roke are struggling with their current environment whilst Father Gomez and Macphail scheme to enact their plan to defeat The Serpent – who they think is Lyra, in another world – but we’ve had some hints that it’s Mary Malone; now – in her own, Indiana Jones-world hopping-esque story, exploring the rivers of another world altogether. Mary’s storyline has remained separated from the likes of Lyra and her world of daemons, and it’s slowly coming to a head – the little clues that remind us of her chosen destiny; like Lyra she has much of a role to play in the grand scheme of things. Sooner or later, we could do with some movement here, but it’s fantastic to see her bond with the animal that she’s with in her building quest that showcase the true variety of Phillip Pullman’s rich universe, creating a mirror – a spyglass – the Amber Spyglass – that sees dust and makes it visible in the world. At last she can see, and the trees – and the animals – are dying.

And then we see Roger again; but to him, Jordan College is gone. Lyra reminds him of its existence – and how they snuck into the wine cellar together. His memory comes back, and it hits you right in the heart when it does – the flashbacks to the early episodes when these characters are reminded of them in their childhood is beautifully touching, and just shows how far both Roger and Lyra have come since. The Dead are watching too; they want to listen – the characters are telling stories of the past, and it brings out their memories – the best in them – prompting Lyra to lead a speech to them. No longer it’s about just Roger’s death – this isn’t life after death, it’s a prison camp, and Will has a way out for them, even if they don’t know what happens next. In this world it’s just thoughts. Out there, real things matter; and stories are the way out.

Episode 5 is what the show has been building towards; emotional storytelling at its absolute peak. The dynamic between Roger and Lyra is rebuilt like it never truly went away; and – the encounter allows them both to examine their past lives; how they met Iorek. As they speak, the dead listen.

But The Magisterium have means of their own and Mrs. Coulter’s captivity leads her to be a victim of her own experiments, her own grand designs – The Amber Spyglass brings the events of the third series fully back around to the events of Northern Lights as she’s forced to reckon with the guilt of her actions. Ruth Wilson’s character is one of the most well developed of the series and I really love the arc that she’s undergone here, so much – fighting against Mrs. Coulter’s own technology which she’s having explained to her by Macphail; who uses a lock of Lyra’s hair to locate her – but does it work, if she’s already in the land of the dead?

And speaking of, the Dead have made their judgement call. They’re ready to leave – but the creatures have other ideas. This time: Lyra’s not listening. She believes the creatures have no power here, and she’s right. Beyond memories and reams – Lyra’s ability to talk to the creatures and ask their names showcases her brilliance as a character. And then we get the reunion: it’s Lee Scoresby, conjured by the memory that Lyra was talking about him. I never thought I’d be happier to see Lin Manuel-Miranda again, but His Dark Materials pulls that out perfectly.

And now the Regent is made aware: of Asriel’s interference to challenge him. The stakes are raised, as high as ever. Unlike the bearers before, the knifebearer hasn’t been corrupted yet. This time, the Regent believes: it’s time to warn them.

Everyone delivers their A-Game in this episode; it’s the best acted episode of the series thus so far – bringing real The Last Jedi comparisons in how the series looped its story together – all these events happening at the same time, spread across all the worlds: ambitiousness personified on the grandest of scales. Dr. Cooper’s heroic stand-up to Father Macphail triggers a quiet rebellion – ultimately futile, but important all the same: this is the chef’s kiss of the moment, before she’s taken out with Mrs. Coulter helpless to watch. Even Roke is felled; but Mrs. Coulter is freed at last; and finally gets the upper hand – as a beam of light is unleashed on the worlds.

And then the warning, beaming down – the incision amplified on a global scale:

YOU THINK DUST CAN MAKE YOU GODS. LET US SEE HOW YOU FARE WITHOUT IT.

Buckle up; we’re in the endgame now.

Episode 6, The Abyss:

The Abyss picks up in the aftermath of episode five with some pretty big moments being felt across the board. Episode five was the biggest moment that kickstarted the second half of the series and it’s felt everywhere, the ramifications of the rift in two. We see the immediate aftermath on the ground and in the skies:

Mrs. Coulter tries to deal with it her own way; but even her daemon disobeys her. The monkey has followed her forcibly through every turn and now even it leaving her is something that Ruth Wilson pulls off brilliantly with a devastating command of authority. It’s pretty clear that her and Lord Asriel are two sides of the same coin; both egotistical and arrogance driven, as Asriel’s been not only uncaring about the supposed loss of Lyra when Mrs. Coulter tells him of what she’s learnt, but also: the fate of the daemon that belonged to Ruta Skadi, whose death brings back an old friend – that of Serafina Pekkala, anguished by the loss of Skadi’s daemon. But to Asriel, each death is an opportunity – the hole opened in the ground by Metatron could be Metatron’s own undoing, as if even dust is destroyed by it – why not the Authority?

The quest to continue the great escape from the land of the dead involves a classic jump across a small gap; in which Will doubts his belief, but pairing Will and Roger together presents a fun competition for Lyra: they both deeply care for her; and it’s clear that Will likes her. Lee Scoresby finds the whole thing amusing but is willing to help out an old friend – he finds out that John Parry was Will’s father under a different name, and with the two having worked together in the past, believes – although it might be hard for him to locate the man – it possible. If Lyra’s reunion with her parents is still to come, then surely, at least, Will can have his? It’s a fascinating back half of a season, so many reunions and so many interesting resurfaces that it feels like the connection of the dots being drawn – after a spread of three series across three different books, everything’s together at last for one grand finale.

Lord Asriel now goes to Iorek who is not happy with him to say the least – one of the joys of this finale has been pairing up characters who haven’t interacted before and the series writing them as though they’d known each other all along, first Will and Roger, now Iorek and Asriel – Iorek angry at Asriel for robbing him of his food supplies by creating a daemon weapon for his bears; Asriel steadfast as ever. He wants to know about Lyra, Iorek more of a father to her than Asriel ever was. Asriel still doesn’t know the full circumstances of her death however, and she may still be alive – going to the land of the dead alive is very different from ending up there voluntarily.

Lyra going to the land of the dead alive raises plenty of questions: if we are judged by the authority and sent to the land of the dead where has Lyra ended up? Neither – is the answer, and therein lies yet another answer to the defeat of the Authority. The Dead go to the Land but cannot escape, an everlasting prison – perfect for the Angels. Asriel sees this as an opportunity – and recognises that her daughter is staging a prison break. McAvoy sells this completely with the enthusiasm that only someone as deranged as Asriel can pull off – and does it excellently.

Serafina and Mrs. Coulter get a chance to share the same screen together; still believing that Lyra is dead, but Serafina is refusing to give Mrs. Coulter what she wants and strike her down. It’s a chilling scene – both superbly acted again, just His Dark Materials is a triumph that comes from its completely committed actors selling *everything* - no less than when they would in a show. Mrs. Coulter’s realisation of her loss is proof that she did love Lyra, and Serafina did understand more than Mrs. Coulter knew: they share a similar path, both given hope by Lyra that she would change the world – all of these characters drawn together by one person, Lyra. This has become a recurring theme of this season – characters being brought together, changed by their connection to Lyra, we’ve had both Iorek and Mrs. Coulter now, through means of their own.

Lyra’s escape continues – she’s pulled back into the abyss, but is rescued, by one of the creatures that attacked them earlier. This is an excellent bit of CGI and visual effects work by the way – I should point out the whole season has just been fantastic, filmed and shot mostly in Cardiff – giving lieu to a stellar backdrop of a variety of scenes. Names just can’t be given; but Gracious Wings is the name given to the creature by Lyra – who tells the creature that hers was given to her – by Iorek. Gracious Wings guides Will and Lyra to safety – believing that Gracious Wings’ story cannot be told if their name isn’t known. The creature believes that true stories feed them – they didn’t know anything beyond lies and wickedness. A solution is presented then: to get out, the dead’s life story must be told to creatures like Gracious Wings.

And then we get the reunions, as if we didn’t have enough this season. First Asriel tells Mrs. Coulter that Lyra is still alive; and the Witches prophecy is now half right – she will defeat death and become Eve. And then second the big one, Will and his father, John Parry – John, who had precious little moments of screentime with Will alive, is impressed – Will’s far greater than he ever expected. Roger has an emotional heart to heart with Lyra too – the characters getting to convey their feelings and their goals – worries and thoughts. This is the best His Dark Materials has been at giving its characters real aspirations in an age; with Roger and Lyra understanding that they won’t be going the same way once they escape the land of the dead. There’s no Oxford reunion for them.
And then comes the heartbreak – setting up for the finale to come – John warns Will that staying in Lyra’s world will be devastating. No matter the temptations, he must resist – but he’s done a great thing of wonder: every character who has died, trapped in purgatory – will be freed. These are small scenes, emotionally scored and given the powerful punch that they need to stand greater than they are - it was such a good move to bring back the two fan favourite characters from the previous seasons, their absences this time out haven’t really been felt, but it gives Will and Lyra a chance to say their goodbyes ahead of the final battle that is yet to come – a mission that to Serafina, is far more important than even the rebellion against heaven.

No more Roger, no more Lee, more John Parry. That’s it – the end of the for them, but they’re no longer trapped in purgatory. In terms of emotional endings, His Dark Materials knows how to go out with a bang. And we’re not even at the end yet. There’s still the other part of the prophecy to be told.

Episode 3, The Intention Craft

His Dark Materials continues with its double episode header of The Intention Craft and Lyra and Her Death, which kind of act as a neat pairing for each other – with the title for episode four being very much an indicator of where this series is pushing Lyra, right the way through to the end – her journey towards the Land of the Dead.

Much of Will’s arc has been torn between deciding whether or not to help Lord Asriel first or Lyra and he’s a good natured character to the point where it’s even been mentioned by now; Mrs. Coulter – his good nature and careful planning is a match for Lyra and it’s great to see both characters on screen together again, united – working out what their next plan of action should be and there’s no convincing Lyra once she sets off on one of her mad errands – it’s just a question of whether or not Will wants to come along.

The main quest for the pair of them in this episode involved rebuilding the knife with the help of Iorek and it was fascinating to see them do that effectively; pairing Will up with other characters from Lyra’s world this season for the first time has been a highlight – getting him into that universe has been stellar and the experience that Amir Wilson has gained inbetween seasons really helped; as has Dafne Keen – both two really bright young stars really have the power and the in-built chemistry to convey the more mature scenes between the two; and I can’t wait to see their next projects, not least because Keen is in The Last of Us.

It's trouble in paradise as the Council is meeting to decide whether Mrs. Coulter can be invited into their camp – and it seems that Mrs. Coulter revels in calling out Asriel for being as hypocritical as she is –as great a pairing of Wilson and Keen, so too is Ruth Wilson and McAvoy, both completely selling every intention of their character in a battle of wits. The council eventually are convinced; but during yet another interrogation sequence of Alarbus, Mrs. Coulter seizes her chance to escape with the help of her daemon and steal the world-travelling ship that Asriel used. She’s smart enough to outwit the guards and escape – but why stop her; when really – you know that there’s only one place that she’s going – to Lyra! How Lyra will take that will be another matter; but Mrs. Coulter’s love for her child is the character’s main driving narrative of the season.
Ruth Wilson is superb, Just really, really good – better than good, as Mrs. Coulter reckons with the knowledge of the belief that her entire world is a lie. And McAvoy matches it – cutting Alarbus into pieces and sending him to Metatron as a warning – if nothing before has mattered to the Authority – surely the killing of their own will? This is what ups the ante as we go; already it feels like – into the latter stages of the season. I really admire Jack Thorne for daring to take a project like this, and one of Britain’s best working showrunners, really delivers. Stellar – stellar writing all around, and part of that comes from Phillip Pullman’s source material, but even attempting a task like this feels daunting given how dense the book was. So far – so good.

Episode 4, Lyra and Her Death

And then this episode comes along, and just blows my mind. Episode 4. Holy crap. You guys are not ready for episode 4. There’s a lot of jaw-dropping moments in this series, but Lyra and Her Death, is the biggest yet. It’s the lead-up to the Land of the Dead that the show has been building towards – perfect moment – a really, well-done emotionally tender episode full of heart.

Mrs. Coulter is back in the Magisterium with the confidence of someone who knows she was manipulative and eager to pull some strings; not quite back to Lyra just yet – Father Gomez ordered around like a man out of his depth. Father Macphail is now Father President; and he’s convinced, for now – by Mrs. Coulter’s schemes: all that she had to do was to keep Lyra from being tempted by the Serpent, the same way that Eve was – and in her view, it’s Will – the Serpent. On top of that; she knows about the death of Alarbus – Macphail, instantly jealous that an Angel showed itself to Asriel, grants her leniency – that’s two factions she’s been able to weave her way back in from now – the manipulator, as good as ever. Have I mentioned about just how good Ruth Wilson is, really? I don’t think I have.

Coulter’s double-double-double however many I’ve lost count now crossing doesn’t last long. She’s teaming up with Commander Roke, a Gallivespia, stranded – to stop a bomb using parts of the Daemon killer that Mrs. Coulter worked on in the past; so she’s got very real blood on her hands. Roke kills Dr. Cooper and aids the escape – until Father Gomez and Macphail arrive to capture her. I really like how easy Roke is able to slip away from the Magisterium – excellent as ever and really embraces the alien worlds – the Magisterium aren’t looking for Roke because they don’t know he exists. Why would they? No fairies can be daemons; and no daemons can be fairies.

Unfortunately for Mrs. Coulter the lock of Lyra’s hair that she and Roke burnt is not completely disposed of – Macphail still has a bit – and a bit is all he needs. The plan is to sever Mrs. Coulter from her daemon, and create a bomb that assassinates Lyra – taking her out of the picture and ending the threat of Eve – all Mrs. Coulter’s efforts for naught.

And then we get to the big one: Lyra and her death. Quite literally – her death. Like every daemon; everyone has a death – they just don’t see theirs until they’re ready to die. The boat master at the land of the dead has one more price to pay: the daemon Panteleimon can’t accompany Lyra to the land of the dead, and they have to separate – it’s just heart-breaking to watch Dafne Keen break down as the boat pulls away. The price has been paid. The toll is taken. Death comes for them all – the confrontation was lovely; a risk-taking, heart-breaking moment – will Lyra ever find Pan again? Was this the end for them? Only book readers will know the answer – but every farewell lands – it feels real, genuine and heart-breaking.

And this is only episode four. Such a marvellous job Charles Martin and Jack Thorne have done; and sorry to Black Adam, but Lorne Balfe is just next-level good here. All killer, zero filler – and the emotional problems of the first two plot-heavy episodes have all fallen apart into something truly special. The Amber Spyglass has arrived, and not a moment too soon.

Episode 1, The Enchanted Sleeper

His Dark Materials is back for the third season; the COVID gap has meant that Lyra and Will look distinctively older than their second season selves, but it picks up on the brink of war – an all plot-driven episode that has the sides aligning to fight in Lord Asriel’s war against the Authority. We’re deep into The Amber Spyglass territory, the final battle: endgame. The Enchanted Sleeper splits up Will and Lyra – with both on their own journeys, and Asriel on his own – recruiting soldiers from a prison on a different world.

Two years since the ending of Series 2 meant that that the previously on segment at the start of the episode was a welcome one – even for someone who poured over the books obsessively growing up. The Amber Spyglass, out of all of His Dark Materials, is the book that I can recall the least – Northern Lights and The Subtle Knife I can recite almost page for page. But this episode catches up with Lyra – held captive by Mrs. Coulter and drugged so that she can’t fight back. Mrs. Coulter and Lord Asriel are both looking after their daughter in different ways – for Mrs. Coulter, it’s protecting her at all costs from the coming battle – keeping her on a remote island and warning the children of the village; who can communicate through sign-language, to tell their elders to stay away. From the start these scenes with Mrs. Coutler give you chills – and Ruth Wilson is excellent at delivering them. Her Daemon has avoided speaking to her for so long – and she’s aware that she has a lot riding on Lyra. Only an actress as good as Wilson can convey Mrs. Coulter’s sick, twisted fantasy with complete and total commitment – and she quickly wins over the child in the village – although Ama has her own suspicions that could spell trouble.

Everyone it seems is looking for Lyra for their own reasons. Will wants Lyra because they care about each other – and he’s enlisted the help of Angels, working for Lord Asriel, to do so. The race of the Angels and Will across the multiple worlds gave Will a reason to believe the Angels were there to help in the end; and I did like the shared chemistry that the couple had. The thought-provoking nature of the angels feels very much corresponding with the religious texts and the battle of freedom vs. faith is one of the core themes of The Amber Spyglass, so expect some heavy religious debate with plenty of morally grey antagonists thrown into the mix. The dynamic pairs Will up again with Iorek; and the ragtag band of Iorek and Will and the Angels go looking for Lyra by boat. It’s always good to see more of Iorek in any shape or fashion – and the characters deliver. But can they find Lyra before the Magisterium? She’s having visions of her own of the underworld and of Roger; her oldest friend – noticeably older than when we first met him.

The Magisterium wants Lyra because she’s the new Eve; the so-called Mother of Sin. To them – Eve represents the coming of thought and creativity, and Dust – and must be stopped at all costs. We meet Father Gomez (Jamie Word) – and Father-President MacPhail, played by Dafne Keen’s own father – Will Keen – to track down Lyra with the beetles that we’ve seen in the past. The inner-workings of the terrifying Magisterium suggest the sheer power of the Authority if we didn’t need a reminder – acting as the totalitarian law and order; freedom, thought is on the line – the direct contrast between Asriel’s army of multiverse soldiers – Angels, witches, fairies all – representing a united band of brothers.

The show excels at creating bonds between new and old characters and integrating the parallel worlds concept much better than anything else that’s tackled the multiverse has ever done so. I really liked how naturally His Dark Materials introduced Commander Ogunwe (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje) – a captured warrior fighting one of the Authority’s many arms, and Lord Asriel introduced here sets up the concept of other worlds from the perspective of a newcomer; freed from prison with an army of his own. Asriel’s the only one that’s not looking for Lyra – he has his own agenda – gathering reinforcements – and this feels like the deep breath before the plunge. Ogunwe has the charisma to rival Asriel and can act as a leader in the way that Asriel cannot. He’s eventually convinced by the power of Asriel’s other worlds – and the spirt of James McAvoy, who can win anyone over.

Episode 2, The Break

The Break was a fun, action packed and as usual, very plot heavy of His Dark Materials. If there has been one weakness about this show is just how plot-heavy the series has felt, it’s been entirely A-to-B with little room to slow down. But that’s expected in a third of a trilogy – remember how non-stop Return of the King was at this early stage? And make no mistake about it, if The Subtle Knife was The Two Towers, The Amber Spyglass is our Return of the King.

The Break wastes no time with picking up two threads – the significant chunk of the episode revolves around Will’s plan to get Lyra out of Mrs. Coulter’s cage. He gets to talk to her and she manages to talk to Will and get him to at least see her point of view; again, the master manipulator – but Lyra is irredeemable to Mrs. Coulter’s belief, every word that comes out of her mother’s mouth is a lie. Mrs. Coulter tries to keep her there but when the Magisterium find them; she’s forced to let Lyra go – begrudgingly – with Will, as the pair escape the island. It's a tense, action-packed episode that makes the most out of the location it was filmed on – the horror of the airships descending from the skies rivals the sight of the Empire in Andor, for example – The Magisterium are just as sinister an organisation.

We get to learn that Roger is in the mythical Land of the Dead – Lyra’s been haunted by dreams of Roger all season, and it’s the one place that Pan cannot go. Daemons have been used less and less throughout this series which has been one of the few issues with its adaption from the source material – it’s rare that you’ll see many of them on screen anymore, but the show is branching out into daemon-less worlds; so that’s only to be expected. Plus the budget for the daemons is beyond even the lavish budget that’s thrown His Dark Materials’ way.
All of Asriel’s army building has been done with the aim of grabbing the attention of the Authority – provoking him out of Heaven to get any kind of reaction. With the help of Ruta Skadi, they’re going to keep going until they get there – dust is key to provoking him and Asriel gets the chance to use dust as a weapon on a captured angel – who is taken hostage after Baruch leaves a message – passing away but warning him that they have found the bearer of the one who can destroy the Authority and his regent – Will, who’s on his way to Lyra.

The result of Baruch’s death is felt by Balthamos – and after introducing such an interesting couple to kill them off so early on is harshly brutal – we barely got the chance to know Baruch – the character almost felt like a plot device rather than a character – the weight of his sacrifice left me cold rather than devastated; but hopefully that gives Balthamos more time to shine here as one of the traitor Angels who has sided with Asriel. The chief of them all is Xaphania, who’s now consorting with humans – but is annoyed that Asriel found Baruch’s death so meaningless. Everything to Asriel, almost like the series itself – is structured around getting to the final battle – that final conflict – that it’s left precious room to develop the side characters. The Angel captured is Alarbus, newly introduced, who reveals that Enoch is no longer Enoch but Metatron – not a Transformer but a Regent nonetheless. Episode 2 is very much more of the same from wherein Episode 1 left off – army building – not just on one side but two. His Dark Materials is putting itself in a very precarious position where audiences are expecting a big final battle – and it has to deliver on its budget; otherwise the show will face an uphill climb. But so far everything has been excellent – and I have faith in Jack Thorne and his team.

The goal of the Authority is to establish an inquisition of all living beings to complete their submission to heaven; per Alarbus – but he’s quick to remind Asriel that he’s so insignificant that he’s not even known to the Authority. Egotistical bragging or desperation? Dust may be the key to provoking Metatron – and both beings we’ll get to see before the end.

Episode 2 reintroduced us to Dr. Mary Malone, one of the main characters of The Subtle Knife, who is also world-hopping of her own. She’s on the same side as two soldiers of the resistance in an abandoned base; and whilst they’re being hunted by aircraft, they’re quick and smart enough to avoid them. It’s good reintroduction to Mary who hasn’t crossed paths with anyone significant yet, but the soldiers are able to learn from her about the girl, Lyra – that they’re looking for, and convince her to stay a little longer.

Even Mrs. Coulter recognises that Lyra free; eventually – is better than Lyra in the hands of The Magisterium, and stalls Father Gomez who finally catches up with her before having a change of heart and wanting to accompany them on their mission – purely driven to look after Lyra. After provoking Will into shattering the Knife; the pair are able to escape – not just from Mrs. Coulter and the Magisterium but also Asriel, who shows up, like Father Gomez, too late.

And now Lyra and Will are on their own again. Against the world. Or should that be worlds? It’s certainly enough to pick up the emotional heft that the largely cold premiere was lacking, and whilst we’ve had time for the slower pace of The Subtle Knife in the past, none of the beloved quieter moments like watching Paddington have since been recaptured yet. This feels like one long slog at first – with beauty in the locations but none in the character – the cliff hideaway and the Land of the Dead look like big screen spectacle locations that you’d pay to see in the cinema; but much of the character moments come down to the strength of the acting and the characters involved. Hopefully now the stage is set His Dark Materials can give us an edge to its characters and remind them that there are some things worth fighting for.

The stakes are higher than ever – and it’s delivered with all the thrills that one might expect. The show will air on HBO in the US between now and December 26 with two episodes each week; but all episodes will be available to stream in the UK on BBC iPlayer from the 18th of December – I’ll be airing my reviews to match the US dates but will review the final set as a whole when they air in the UK. Expect the show to also air weekly on BBC One in addition to its iPlayer debut.

Press Release

HBO Max announces everything coming to the platform this December including the third and final season of HIS DARK MATERIALS (12/5), based on “The Amber Spyglass,” the final novel in Philip Pullman’s award-winning trilogy. In the final chapter of this epic fantasy series, Lyra (Dafne Keen), the prophesied child, and Will (Amir Wilson), the bearer of The Subtle Knife, must journey to a dark place from which no one has ever returned. But as her father’s great war against the Authority edges closer, they will learn that saving the world comes at a terrible price.

GOSSIP GIRL (12/1) is leaving no stone unturned in her effort to control the scandalous lives/spin the scandalous lies of Manhattan's elite. She's learned a thing or two from her first go-round — namely what her audience wants, they shall get. It's time for her to turn the heat up on what's been simmering as well as look at her own impact, and how she can make it more catastrophic than it was before.

December also brings the fourth season of DOOM PATROL (12/8), which opens with the team unexpectedly traveling to the future to find an unwelcome surprise. Faced with their imminent demise, the Doom Patrol must decide once and for all which is more important: their own happiness or the fate of the world?

From creators Bashir Salahuddin, Diallo Riddle and Sultan Salahuddin, SOUTH SIDE (12/8) follows Simon (Sultan Salahuddin) and K (Kareme Young), two enterprising best friends hustling and dreaming their way through the Windy City – when they’re not too busy working as furniture repo men at the local Rent-T-Own. Shot on location in Chicago, the series also features cunning Sergeant Turner (Chandra Russell) and her clueless partner Officer Goodnight (Bashir Salahuddin), questionable local politician Allen Gayle (Diallo Riddle), and an ever-expanding roster of real-life Chicago residents, offering a glimpse at what it’s really like to live on the South Side.

The second season of SORT OF (12/1) is the season of love. Love includes friends, family, work, romantic love and, most importantly, one’s self-love. Sabi decides that not only are they ready for some uncomplicated romance, but they also want everyone to love each other. Unfortunately, Sabi is faced with situations and relationships that are anything but simple, including their dad’s unexpected return from Dubai, the Kaneko-Bauers’ struggles as Bessy is released from rehab and issues at Bar Bük.

Four-part docuseries BRANSON (12/1) takes viewers on an expansive and intimate 70-year journey, from Richard Branson’s upbringing as the son of a spirited, tough-love mother in Britain, to his pursuits of extreme, personal daredevilry that serve both to grow his businesses’ brands and feed his insatiable, lifelong thirst for high-stakes adventure.

Artist, musician and filmmaker Terence Nance returns with a long-awaited second season of the acclaimed series RANDOM ACTS OF FLYNESS, which explores the metaphysics of Black life through avant-garde storytelling. Season two follows Terence and Najja (Alicia Pilgrim), a couple working towards healing generational wounds and reintroducing themselves to the ways of their ancestors. Each of the season’s six episodes explores a different dimension, while presenting a rich tapestry of audio-visuals to illustrate the spiritual practice of Black liberation.

A HOLLYWOOD CHRISTMAS (12/1) follows Jessica, a young, up-and-coming filmmaker in Hollywood who has made a name for herself directing Christmas movies. But when handsome network executive Christopher shows up threatening to halt production on her latest movie, Jessica’s assistant, Reena, points out the irony: Jessica isn’t just trying to save her Christmas movie, she’s actually living in one.

Another batch of discovery+ titles will be coming to HBO Max on December 14 which will include SERVING THE HAMPTONS, SELLING THE HAMPTONS, TRIXIE MOTEL, and QUEEN OF VERSAILLES REIGNS AGAIN. Magnolia Network’s SILOS BAKING COMPETITION: HOLIDAY EDITION (12/9), which follows five home bakers across the country that are challenged to perfect a favorite holiday cookie recipe for a $25,000 cash price and a chance to have their winning treat featured on the menu in December at Chip and Joanna’s bakery, Silos Baking Co. Joining Joanna Gaines at the judges’ table are guest judges Andrew Zimmern (Family Dinner) and Zoë François (Zoë Bakes) will also make its way to the platform this month.

HBO Max is offering a limited time savings of 80% on the first three months of the ad-supported subscription for Black Friday. For new and returning customers in the United States, the ad-supported subscription of HBO Max will be offered at $1.99/month for the first three months. The offer ends Monday, November 28.
