Welcome to the 2021 SpoilerTV Character Cup. Our brackets are set and it’s time to start. Before we begin, thanks to everyone who helped find pictures and/or made suggestions for our TV Talk topics or mini-contest. You guys rock! I cannot express how much time it saves me and how grateful I am to you.

To ensure that everybody has a good time, please read the rules below. It is important that everyone be kind and fair to make this the most fun for everyone. Below is a link to the character rankings and official bracket, as well as one for the prediction contest. Most importantly, the daily TV Talk Topic will be found above the polls each time. We have a new TV Talk Topic every day and all are encouraged to participate. It's my favorite part of the contest.

The Character Cup goes by very quickly so don't forget to check SpoilerTV every day to vote, look at the prediction standings, and participate in the daily discussion. For those of you with underdog characters, get the word out now because round 1 is where the biggest change can happen. Generally there are fewer votes in round 1, so it is far easier for an upset. With no further ado, I announce the 2021 Character Cup, open! Happy voting!

Rankings/Brackets

Prediction Contest

Round will end at approximately 5:00 pm CST on Tuesday, July 6.

Character Cup Rules:

1. Don't take it too seriously! Have fun. While we will do our best to keep this contest running smoothly, it's up to each person to follow the rules. This Cup is just a fun little piece of internet fluff. It won't get anyone's show renewed or un-cancelled. It has zero effect on ratings. It won't be seen by anyone who has any power in the TV industry, so there is zero reason to cheat. All cheaters do is disrespect themselves, their fandom, their show, the actors, and this community. Just don't.

3. Focus on characters, not people. Talking about what you like and dislike about a character is encouraged. Going after actors or fans is not.

4. The aliens have not landed. There's no conspiracy here. I will do my very best to keep the contest running smoothly, but I do make mistakes. I apologize in advance for any technical difficulties, spelling errors, and general absentmindedness. Let me know and I'll fix it.

5. Comments are life. As you anxiously await the return of your shows, why not distract yourself with a little TV Talk? Each day is a new topic so even if your favorites are out, you can still discuss. While this contest is just a silly little distraction, the conversation here dives deep, so jump on in.

6. Nuts and Bolts - All polls are active for about 24 hours.
A month ago, Clarice was poised to move from CBS to Paramount+ with the promise of a long run for a premium version of the Silence of the Lambs sequel. Now, prospects for the series appear bleak as negotiations between the ViacomCBS streamer and co-producer MGM have reached a stalemate, I have learned.

Additionally, I hear there is no viable path for Clarice to continue on CBS as the broadcast network already committed to a full slate of series for next season. It would mean the end of the road for the high-profile drama barring a major breakthrough in the Paramount+ negotiations, which currently appears unlikely. Reps for Paramount+ and MGM declined comment.

I had not seen any episodes added to Google episode list or Clarice's Wikapedia page when I wrote the last review, nor did SpoilerTV have future episode press releases. As it turns out there are 13 episodes (thank goodness, because I really wasn't sure how they would wrap some things up with just an episode left) and I made a mistake.

With that said the tenth episode of Clarice is not an episode that advances the main murder river plot, but rather let's the subplot with Catherine's reconciliation with what happened with Buffalo Bill shine. For the entire first season both Clarice and Catherine have struggled in different ways with what happened before the events of the tv series. For Clarice, it's been a journey about unraveling the truth behind her own family, particularly her father (and mother). But for Catherine it's been about deep isolation and a fear to even go outside her mother's lavish residence, at least until episode nine when she left to confront an ex fiance`. But it's been no secret that Catherine is on the hunt for Buffalo Bill's mother and finally she has found her in New Jersey!

At first Catherine poses as a young women wanting to join Lila Gumb's bingo game, asking Lily how to play, before following her home, getting into a skirmish, causing Lila to fall down and hit her head, as Catherine drags her in the house and tries to attend to her wounds, hoping she is still alive.

Clarice gets word that Catherine has gone missing and is forced to finally tell Ruth what Catherine's plans have been, which of course Clarice gets a bit of a thrashing for. Clarice says she thinks she can find Catherine and Lila Gumb, but she will have to go looking back through the case evidence, something she's not too enthusiastic about doing. Clarice also attempts to get Adrelia to help her, but Adrelia insists she can't, because she's about ready to proceed with her case against the bureau...

In the meantime agents Esquivel and Clarke continue to work with the reluctant Julia Lawson on the river murders case. At first is seems like Clarke has a problem with Julia's trans identity and eventually Julia calls him out on it, but ultimately that doesn't seem to be the case at all, as Clarke explains what happened to his sister. He explains that he was wondering if Julia's hair color was natural or dyed, because his sister use to dye her hair that color, but they quit making it, and he wondered if it had come back again. Feeling bad about falsely accusing him, she tells him that it is her natural color.

There is not a lot of action that happens by the time Clarice is able to find Catherine and Lila and Lila's current residence, after Lila has woken up and the two have had a couple of stand offs with Catherine now the one holding Lila at gunpoint. But that doesn't make the exchanges between Lila and Catherine and the juxtaposing scenes between Ruth and Paul Krendler any less tense.

Catherine went searching for answers, and although Clarice intervene and Lila begins to explain what happened to James and how James' father had left her, how James was taken away from her and then raised by her parents...there is nothing much that satisfies Catherine, as Clarice keeps repeating that James is just something that happened, not something that was necessarily made by an event or a seriously abusive parent.

Clarice is able to get Catherine to stop and she calls Ruth before handing Catherine over to the local police, explaining to Ruth that she feels that Catherine needs to understand that there are consequences to her actions.

Clarice then goes to pay a visit to her therapist Dr. Li, pushing her again to think about her mother, a mother who seemed angry and eventually abandoned her, but not her other siblings, when her father died. She recalls the night that her mother was fighting with him and he picked her up and took her out for coke-floats. Clarice continues to idealize her father, until she suddenly remembers that he stopped the car, left her alone inside, while he went to see some men...

While the episode wasn't an action heavy or a very plot-advancing episode, it was really quite intense. I most particularity enjoyed Paul's and Ruth's discussion about thee unnamed cannibal & Clarice, almost as if Clarice was their daughter. It was an interesting paternal window into a more intimate relationship we hadn't really seen and I'm still so curious as to why Hannibal continues to loom as a point of interest in show's overall development.

Speaking of, food was of course featured again. This time in the form of a homemade chocolate cake Lily won from Bingo night. For a moment I thought maybe she and Catherine might end the episode sitting down eating it together, since Lily seemed to understand why Catherine had come and hadn't called the police on her own. But the way the episode fixates on her eating alone does make me wonder, if there is more to it? If she did seriously lie about something?? I just get an impression that things might not really be settled yet and I kind of found the cake-eating scene a little off-putting to disturbing.

As for Clarice's choice to turn over Catherine, I feel uncertain about that too. It's not that her reasons were not rational, but with the FBI and Clarice's role in it about to be turned upside down by The Coalition's case, I feel like Clarice won't be able to protect Catherine, Catherine will become more unstable, and that Catherine might be made an example of, as the FBI may try to pin it all on the Attorney General. On the other hand, however, it won't look like nepotism, but still, is this good for Catherine? Is Catherine stronger than we think?

"Krendler was the icon of failure and frustration. He could be blamed. But could he be defied? Or was Krendler, and every other authority taboo, empowered to box Starling into what was, in Dr. Lecter's view, her little-low-ceiling life? To him one hopeful sign: though she was imprinted with the badge, she could still shoot a hole through one and kill the wearer. Why? Because she had committed to action and identified the wearer as a criminal and made the judgement ahead of time, overruling the imprinted icon of the star. Potential flexibility. The cerebral cortex rules." - Hannibal, Pgs 510 & 511

Clarice's memory-revelation is also a curious one. As mentioned on previous reviews, having siblings and her mother alive after her father's death is a serious deviation from the books' [Clarice] backstory, but adding this association of these men and suggesting her father was doing something less than lawful, is an interesting twist to play with, especially because despite that Hannibal eventually takes credit for changing Clarice, he also completely admits he could not control her.

"He could feed the caterpillar, he could whisper through the chrysalis; what hatched out followed its own nature and was beyond him."
Part of his manipulation was trying to undo how Clarice's perceived him, getting underneath a pattern--the symbol of justice and Sheriff's star could not really be pierced, no matter how Hannibal tied. It does also suggest that perhaps Hannibal did know some of her father's flaws, despite that Hannibal novel never explicitly says what they are, only that Clarice's resentments are based on the fact that he left her behind. So whatever is going to get revealed here might an interesting choice (although I can see this being a bit of misdirection too)--and I'm curious if it will also draw more parallels between Hannibal and Clarice, since the writers insist on keeping him alive.

So what did you think? Enjoy the episode? Any theories about how things might go down over the next three episodes? Do you think the tables will turn and Clarice could maybe get saved by Catherine Martin, instead of the other way around? And where the heck is Tripath??? Sound off in the comments below!

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29964715.post-84213997205222329562021-06-04T04:27:00.003+01:002021-06-04T04:27:37.223+01:00Clarice - Episode 1.11 - Achilles Heal - Promo + Press Release

In one of the earlier episodes, I commented on how I wasn't really sure about the changes from the book (Buffalo Bill was trying to transform into a glorified version of his deceased mother), as this version of events has decided to keep his mother alive. I worried about the portrayal and how it might affect the trans community, as the motives behind his transformation would either have to be different or potentially deluded, but this episode begins to address and hopefully remedy such a concern.

Paul Krendlers team continue on in secret with the River Murders case. Clarice and Esquivel are tasked to go back over everything, while Clarke gets some information about who signs checks and works for Hudlin from his CI, who then later turns up dead!

Clarke's lead however takes Clarice to a trans women named Julia Lawson and her sick partner Erin. It takes a while for Lawson to come forward. She firsts talks to her partner acknowledging that she took this job for their security, before she is ready to help Clarice--but the conversation she has with her, is rather compelling. We learned that the headlines that came after the Buffalo Bill case hurt the in-universe trans community, making it all out that they were all like Buffalo Bill. Clarice tries to defend herself, telling Julia she didn't write those articles. Julia rebuttals that Clarice had a voice to set the record straight and she did't use it. Julia hands Clarice the files and reminds her that silence is purgatory--telling Clarice she can't stay silent and she has to expose the truth about these women.

As for Catherine Martin, she does get Bae to take her to the restaurant to meet her ex, and everything seems to be going ok, until Ned is about to tell her that he is going to marry someone else. Catherine's instincts do her credit and she cuts him off, before he has time to explain himself. But more over, because she feels so mislead, she demoralizes him and emasculates him. Ned leaves and she is left in the restaurant on the verge of a breakdown, but just before anything else can happen, her mother arrives to take her back home. But by the end of the episode she seems more confident and calls Clarice, almost as a warning, while she continues to obsess over Buffalo Bill's mother--perhaps now being much closer to going out and finding her!

And while we don't know for certain if Ned is trans, given the way Catherine devours him, the scene does a few interesting things. It juxtaposes again the way Clarice and Catherine have processed their trauma. Clarice is on path of remediation by promising Lawson she will get it right this time. Catherine on the other hand is clearly a bit bitter--and while what Ned did was wrong, his characteristics didn't necessarily need to be on the menu for Catherine to call him out. However "Ned" happens to rhyme with Ted and Ted Levine (last seen in Big Sky) played Buffalo Bill in the Silence of the Lamb's films and Ned does have some visual characteristics of both Buffalo Bills. Lawson and Ned come off diametrically opposing in similar fashion to Clarice and Catherine, but more over Ned seems to be acting as a kind of trigger for Catherine's own potential demise, depending on what the actual situation is going to be, once she gets to James Gumb's mother...

Other parts of the episode also lead Clarice back to Tyson Conway. As it turns out his father is the head of Alaster Pharmaceuticals!! But T only got to know his father shortly after his mother died and the relationship is kind of a new thing. Clarice, thinking about her own relationships, doesn't really want to pressure or use Tyson, but he ends up being the strongest connection they have. So when she goes back to take a second run at him, she choices a different method than the one Clarke tried to instill in her, she tells him a bit of the truth about what she is doing and whom she thinks his dad is. While the scene doesn't really confirm that Tyson agrees, it seems likely he is the bait and will help Clarice in the season finale!

Paul Krendler continues his gig with Joe Hudlin, but ends up drinking to keep his cover, but there is a conversation he has with Clarke, where Krendler's integrity could be at stake, as Clarke wonders if he really did it for his cover or is it because he really wanted to? As for Adelia Mapp and Haynes, they have compiled enough evidence against the FBI to take to a former FBI agent-turned-lawyer named George Costello. George agrees that the discrimination evidence is astounding and makes a good case, but he also tells them, that if they really want this to work, they have undermined Agent Starling and her rise in the bureau. Mapp eventually warns Clarice on her plan and Clarice does her best to understand. (Part of me wonders though if Costello is in cahoots with Herman and this is about taking Krendler down?)

As for Adelia Mapp and Haynes, they have compiled enough evidence against the FBI to take to a former FBI agent-turned-lawyer named George Costello. Mapp eventually warns Clarice on her plan and Clarice does her best to understand. (Part of me wonders though if Costello is in cahoots with Herman and this is about taking Krendler down?)

There wasn't a lot of things pointing to Hannibal himself this week, but rather other elements that kind of point to the flavor of the Hannibal film/novel. Whether it was Catherine Martin's character assassination of Ned or the way Tyson is now set up as bait in a similar way as to how Clarice was used as bait by Mason Verger to try and catch Hannibal, or even the way Mapp's case against the bureau might start to peg Starling in a new light and screw up her promise to Julia Lawson, all these things thematically feel like they are hitting on that story and that both scares and excites me for how things might play out in finale!

While the front half of the episode was a little bit too fast of pace, going back to earlier episodes that sometimes felt a little systematic and there was less of a Gothic atmosphere, the back half breathed an intriguing set up full of characters all in rather compromising positions, not letting the audience feel too safe before heading into the season finale! (And, If silence is purgatory, then what is it when everyone decides to cry out at the same time? I'm not sure if it always equates justice, as much as more chaos...)

So what did you think? Any season one finale predictions? Do you think the River murders case will be resolved? They follow a lead on a new suicide case, in which it appears that miss Savage jumped off a bridge onto a frozen river and died on impact.

As for Paul Krendler, he's trying to get out from underneath the thumb of his new divorce attorney Joe Hudlin, the one also linked to the river murders and attacked Clarice at the mental hospital. At first it becomes a bit of retread, trying to talk Joe out of being his lawyer, but really, as Paul too soon realizes is that his meeting with Hudlin was sort of a trap, one to get Paul drinking again. But Paul resists the micro-brew and instead swipes Hudlin's pen for DNA evidence, which of course matched DNA left at the hospital crime scene.

The episode tries to make us think that Krendler is going to play his own long game to get out from underneath Hudlin, as there are various scenes of Agent Clarke confronting Krendler and noting his weird behavior to Clarice and Esquivel, but very quickly towards the end of the episode, Paul summons his team (say for Tripath) in a discrete location to confer the DNA match and asks Clarice if she wants to press charges now or see how the whole thing plays out, --if they can tie him to everything, but warns they could all go down for this! Clarice of course wants to play the long game!

As for Adrelia Mapp, she truly believes her success on the missing boys case is going to promote her in the way she deserves, as she finds herself in front of Agent Tony Herman (I knew he would resurface again!) asking for a new DNA task force. Herman praises Mapp and thinks a DNA task force is exactly what the bureau needs, but before the episode ends, it's clear that Mapp isn't going to be running it, but a couple of white guys who don't really know what their doing, and Mapp is asked to give them...a summery!! In the past few episodes Adrelian has been reluctant to join "The Coalition", but she finally caves when she runs across agent Haynes in the parking lot.

As for the Carolina Savage lead, the episode only gets so far in linking her to the other victims. As it turns out she was form a war torn Yugoslavia apart of GHH (Global Health Horizons) a program that gave people from poor countries in the filed experience in another country, so they could bring home what they learned to theirs. We the leader of the organization, a young man named Tyson Conway who Clarice immediately connects with.

Somehow his words hang on Clarice in way that prompts her to think about her own jewelry, her necklace her dad gave her, and noticed that despite that Carolina was seemingly happily married, her ring was missing. She realizes that after her dad died, there was a part of her that thought about leaving her necklace behind, --a way to keep herself alive in another way. This prompts Clarice to go back to bridge and find the wedding ring. They also find Carolina's safety deposit box, which shows pictures of a sonogram--leading them back to go back to re-examine her body. Carolina was pregnant, but her baby had deformations like all of the other female victims children. How could this be, when the trials happened years ago? Could the drug already be on the market? Also, whose the father, Ty or someone within Pharmaceutical conspiracy like Hudlin? These are the questions left for the viewers and team to think about.

Overall I really enjoyed this episode, but not so much for the plot or story, which IMO didn't really go very far, but more over the imagery, the atmosphere, the characters dynamics and it's deeper thematic ties to Thomas Harris-esque reality was near perfect. And I felt there was a lot going on in between the lines!

As mentioned in quite a few previous reviews, Hannibal tends to be this figurative ghost that heavily looms over this story and this episode made that abundantly clear by bringing up the food-consuming dear cannibal early on in one of Clarice's new sessions with Dr. Renee Li. I was hoping so much when they introduced Li, that she would take on "the therapist" mantel for the show and that perhaps some unconventional things would begin to occur for Clarice.

But beyond a direct shout out to Hannibal by bringing him up in therapy, everything else about this episode oozed of him and his book backstory. For starters there was food in almost every shot--but most noticebly things Hannibal himself probably wouldn't eat--everything say for the duck, could be considered junk food (But boy, duck is greasy!). Burgers, fries, M&Ms, brownies, untouched beer ---nothing full of nutrition or deep culinary calculation. In that sense, the food almost acts as an antithesis to Hannibla himself, but perhaps also a metaphor for being starved in some way...

But this also countered with Clarice's connection to Tyson Conway. Why their encounter was brief, it's clear from Clarice's sessions with Dr. Li, that she could immediately relate to him -- that they both had pain and knew where it could easily land. While Dr, Li almost seems to worry about this connection and uses it to get Clarice to talk more about her siblings and how her mother essentially left her behind, the audience might be left wondering if this connection was on the verge of being psychic or at least a connection with sense of deep transference?

When one goes back to Thomas Harris Hannibal and Hannibal Rising novels, it becomes clear what Hannibal had all lost as child and what it is he wants from Clarice. Hannibal grew up in Lithuania during WWII, and while his country is being ripped apart by both Russian tanks and Nazi planes, it is neither that comes to do the unspeakable to his younger 3 year sister Mischa. Local Lithuanians decide to make a profit by looting off the dead and posing as medical personnel, but these five men get stuck in a snow storm with Hannibal and his little sister in their family's cabin, just shortly after their parents have died. There isn't much to eat and Mischa is sick. They kill, cook, and eat Mischa right in front of Hannibal with the prospect that he would be next!

Hannibal is able to escape his captors and is found by Russians and taken back to his family's Castle, except that it is now it's converted into an orphanage in which he mist reside until his Uncle and Aunt come to get him and take him Paris. Later Hannibal tracks them all down one by one and kills them--oh, and did I mention one of them kept Mischa's bracelet and gave it to their daughter?!?!

His comradery with Clarice is evident by their shared backstory of loss family, farm animals, and being left orphaned for a time (and now, siblings). But this gets pushed further when Clarice has to fight against misogynists in her own agency (Paul Krendler) at the beginning of the Hannibal novel. Everyone seems to have it out for her, but after seven years, Hannibal comes to her aid, survives the traps laid by others, but wants something in return...his sister.

It's never explained how or why Hannibal believes that Clarice can be a vessel to house Mischa's consciousness, but the books, with Hannibal's abilities at large, push for something near metaphysical--and something Faustian and one has wonder if Clarice herself could of been clairvoyant or had some kind of psychic connection with an uncanny ability to read some people, including Hannibal?

But everything about this episode from it's junk food extravaganza to beautifully Gothic winter and blood-laden imagery to uncomfortable therapy sessions, the power of jewelry, Hebrew messages (Hannibal was taught everything by a Jewish teacher), unspoken connections between Clarice and Tyson or the fact that Carolina Savage has a backstory about leaving behind a husband and war-torn Eastern European country feels so incredibly Hannibal, but why?

It's pretty clear that (if the series is even lucky enough to make it to another season) Hannibal will not appear or can never be called by name. And sure, having things that take some viewers to the source materials or other adaptations can be welcoming experience, making everything feel like it genuinely goes together, but this feels too deep, too intentional, and too much on the rise to simply be an fun easter egg. Could it be that Clarice is the new the Hannibal? Is she not worried about him coming back, because it's not simply that she understood him, but because she is becoming him or something like him? Is she going to b more like Bryan Fuller's Will Graham and have something of six sense or near super ability that brings her closer into the inner circle of hell than most people could ever go? Or is Hannibal like a dark passenger along side for the ride--a ghost that speaks truths to her that she can use, but also must be careful not loose herself in???

And what about Tyson? Is there more there than meets the eye? Will we ever meet Clarice's siblings? Is one of them behind this conspiracy?? Could they <strike>Ty</strike> tie into this missing sibling plot somehow or just a part of Clarice's six sense? There are a lot more questions to be had now and I can't wait to find out how they will get answered!

What did you think?
