Cara Delevingne's performance in Kingdom of the Moons (1x3) in Carnival Row, is such a gift. She plays Vignette Stonemoss, a fairy trying to protect the country and people she loves in the midst of war. Every one of Delevingne's scenes is electric, as her complete immersion in Vignette's personality makes every heartbreak and thrill contagious. In this single episode, Delevingne conveys not only her character's dauntless spirit but also builds a connection for viewers to Vignette's entire world, enabling us to feel every shred of her grief and yearning when everything that matters to her is being torn away. She soars just as magnificently through the more peaceful scenes, not so much creating magic in this story as bringing the entire story to life. For her luminescent performance, Cara Delevingne has been named SpoilerTV Staff Choice Performer of the Month for August.

Delevingne memorably sets the tone for her character in Vignette's first scene of the episode. Vignette drops out of the darkness to hold a blade to Philo (Orlando Bloom) who has unwittingly trespassed in the library, of which she is the sworn steward. The first thing you see is her eyes, burning with indignation and purpose. There's a ring of pride in Vignette's voice when she mentions her status. Even as she grips his coat and holds the knife to his throat, though, you hear the briefest waver in Vignette's voice suggesting her uncertainty at how to proceed. When she talks about the library, the passion in her voice for its history and meaning enhances how formidable she is, the small part of her that is fearful in that moment is afraid for the library, not herself. Delevingne lets countless unspoken threats play across her face and out of her gaze when Vignette faces Philo and warns him to keep his word. When he leaves, she finally exhales, although the tension doesn't leave her posture. She continues to observe Philo from afar with a calm watchful glare that signifies her perseverance and caution. She is determined to not let her guard down.

When Philo later recruits Vignette to help with restringing a telegraph line, Delevingne slowly unfurls her character and shows more of Vignette's mettle. The scene here requires Vignette to fly, and it's noteworthy how Delevingne shapes realism. She straightens her frame to the point you can almost feel her lifting off the ground when her wings are meant to be propelling her. The wind buffets Vignette's face, but she smiles, thrilled by the exertion. You know she is comfortable in this dangerous space because it is familiar to her as a faerie, as solid as standing on the ground is to a person. That same body language is present when Vignette sits on the edge of a cliff, serenely sharpening her knife. The location isn't important what is important is the way she is nonchalantly conversing with Philo while quite thoroughly attending to her knife. Delevingne eases in other parts of Vignette here, her curiosity and humor. The cadence of her voice becomes more lyrical as if she might laugh, when she derides the premise of Philo's favorite book, The Kingdom of the Moons, with an amused smile. When Vignette points out a man reaching the moon is unlikely, Delevingne delivers the line with no trace of irony. She speaks only common sense, for this world, and it's here you start to recognize how Delevingne's performance is crucial to this entire show. Vignette is a character who always feels completely whole in whatever moment she is in. While other characters are moved by the story, Vignette seems to exist outside of it. She brings the show an authenticity that expands it in a myriad of invaluable ways. She is so alive, and her portrayer Delevingne so completely invisible, that everything and everyone Vignette touches gains life by association. When she opens Philo's book, Vignette speaks her name aloud for the first time in the episode. He is surprised, so she repeats herself very matter-of-factly because she is Vignette, she always has been and always will be. In this scene, Vignette also saves Philo's life when he's attacked by a marrok. The same strength and adrenaline that she threatened him within the library enable her to not only slay the marrok but also to pull Philo to safety. There is relief in her eyes when they are both standing there, an emotion that Delevingne brilliantly displays. Her body stance is calm because little physical exertion was required. She had the power already to save someone in danger. Her relief is borne from emotional conflict because Philo was the person in danger.

As Vignette's affection for Philo increases, Delevingne continues to open up the show's world, just as her character opens her heart. Vignette comes to find Philo to tell him she finished reading the book he lent her. She takes charge of the interaction, beginning with a jest about how he's sitting too close to the edge. When he asks how she's liking the book, she drops down to sit alongside him, carefully taking out the book and casually mentioning she liked it. Vignette expands on why the book appealed to her, and she radiates an enthusiasm familiar to anyone who has fallen in love with a good story. For a moment in the conversation, one can even see her slip away to relive a part of the story in her mind. Philo politely interrupts her happy recollections to mention that he's glad she appreciated the story. She looks at him for a long second and quietly, sincerely, tells him she loved it. When Philo responds by offering her the book, Vignette is so thoroughly delighted that her composure breaks. She overcorrects after giving Philo a big smile and thanks him in a faintly gruff voice. Her natural boldness returns at once, and she invites him to come see inside the library. Throughout this scene, Delevingne strengthens the connection between her character and Bloom's. There's an air of joy and pride in Vignette's nonverbal response to Philo referring to the library as being hers.

The arrival of a group of faeries fleeing the armed conflict ushers in another important facet of Vignette's life: her best friend and past love Tourmaline (Karla Crome). When Vignette spots Tourmaline, she swoops down to snatch her in a fierce hug, mixing a touch of anger into Vignette's gentle ministrations to help her weak friend. She listens with a quiet, angry expression as her hands rip apart plants which she grinds into a poultice. She is very gentle when she takes Tourmaline's hands in her own and applies the treatment. Vignette is quick to kiss those same hands when she tells Tourmaline what they had didn't end but instead changed into their current friendship. Telling Tourmaline about Philo, however, brings Vignette's own unsettled emotions to the surface. Even as she continues to care for Tourmaline, Vignette's voice becomes defensive as if Tourmaline has reproached her. When Tourmaline suggests that he will most likely leave when the war reaches a turning point, Vignette moves away, and her face is knotted with sadness.

She carries those doubts into the next scene with Philo, in which Vignette challenges him on what he sees happening in their future. She is withdrawn for the first time, almost cold, as she contemplates his answers. When Philo tells her, she gives him a sense of coming home, Vignette is surprised. He turns away, and she carefully examines the scars on his back, scars she caught a glimpse of before and tenderly but barely touched. He wrote them off as something he had always had, but she looks at them this time with a burst of compassion, quietly moving a step closer to him. Wonder and hurt on his behalf wells up in her eyes as she softly lays her palms exactly where his wings would have been. Instinctively, Philo begins to pull away, hurrying to put his shirt back on and saying she must think less of him for hiding it. Vignette doesn't allow his assumptions to last. She throws her arms around him, cloaking his back as the wings would have, and brushes a lock of his hair away from his cheek. They lie side-by-side on the library floor, and she listens to his own story, not so different from the one in the book he loves. It's a quiet scene, but it conveys so much about the mutual comfort Philo and Vignette find in each other.

As the time for evacuation draws closer, Vignette bids farewell to her loved ones. She shares a quick, heartfelt goodbye with Tourmaline, reminding her friend she loves her. The weight of the parting is in how Delevingne lingers when Vignette places her hands on the sides of Tourmaline's head and buries her face deep into her friend's scarf, reluctant to let go. Vignette is told to close the library, as everyone is packing up to leave with the fae and soldiers going their separate ways. Philo catches up to her to say she should go with the fae. Vignette shouts in his face that she will not leave him. Her courage is a ferocious beast that will not be contained, and Delevingne makes her so forceful here that she seems to tower over Philo. She tells him they can leave together, cross the mountains to start a life together. When he agrees, there is pure contentment on her face. She locks him in a hug and leaves him with a symbol of her heart. Their exchange of love is perhaps the second most devastating moment of the episode as her goodbye is full of purpose as she's already thinking of seeing him again.

Delevingne has the perfect intensity and sense of urgency as Vignette seals the library to prevent it from falling into enemy hands. When Vignette is told Philo has died, she slowly crumples, fighting back tears of denial. She tries to run back towards the village to find him, fighting against the others trying to hold her. Her face is torn and twisted with raging grief. You can feel her struggling to recover from the blow that struck her. Even as Vignette is pulled back, carried away by the other fairies, Delevingne continues to have her wrestle with them. The way she resists adds to the emotional impact, because her movements are so clunky. They are desperate actions borne of the pain. This scene transitions into the closing minutes that are set in the present storyline. Delevingne plays this conversation as if Vignette’s wounds are newly fresh, and she is clawing for answers not to soothe the hurt but to help her understand Philo’s actions. In the middle of the conversation, Vignette recognizes the truth that what Philo did was the result of his own personal torment. She pauses for a second, and you can see her shove down the desire to protect him. She reprimands him instead, with Delevingne so effectively breaking our hearts as she gathers up all the emotions in her face and puts them away. Vignette gives Philo a look of contempt and flies up out of his sight; it’s the first time this scene set in the pouring rain feels cold. Delevingne’s performance makes these scenes almost unbearably gripping, ensuring that viewers will both need and want to continue this story.
In an episode that focuses on how Vignette protects, loves, fights and grieves with every ounce of herself, Delevingne truly embodies her character by doing nothing in half-measure. Crafting a performance of this caliber so early in a show's run requires nothing less than absolute dedication. It would be an oversimplification to call this performance magical when Delevingne's work does not merely enthrall us with Vignette but also absolutely transposes us into Vignette's world. She has crafted the rare new character that instantly captivates, and her performance was recognized by the SpoilerTV who chose her as August's Staff Choice Outstanding Performer of the Month.
This turned into quite an interesting round of voting. The Readers’ Choice nominees were in a fierce battle for the top spot for most of the voting period. Cait Fairbanks, Marie Avgeropoulos, and Jason Dohring all gave the ultimate winner a fierce challenge for the title. The Staff side was just as fascinating with the winner not being determined until just prior to voting ending. It was a wild round, so thank you to everyone who turned out to nominate and vote. The August round usually tends to be a bit low-key because of the transition from Summer shows to Fall, but this turned out to be one of the most captivating rounds all summer.
Hannah John-Kamen flawlessly portrays both Dutch and Aneela on Syfy’s Killjoys allowing her to showcase her vast range. Playing one character is hard enough, but trying to breathe life into two very different characters is a whole other level that not many performers can rise to. John-Kamen has not only risen to the challenge, but she has found ingenious ways to differentiate the two characters and give them each their own very distinct personalities and traits. In Three Mutineers (5x6), John-Kamen was tasked with complex stories for both of her characters. She was front and center in both main storylines and delivered flawless performances every second she was onscreen. With Dutch, she had to take the fiery Killjoy on a complicated journey to liberate the prison vessel and obtain ships to further their cause against The Lady (Alanna Bale). Then there was Aneela who was given a complex emotional and physical story as she reunited with Kendry (Mayko Nguyen) and Jaq (Jaeden Noel) and had to protect her family. The tones of both storylines were vastly different and yet she was flawless in her portrayal of both of these fierce women. Her performances as both Dutch and Aneela made her a very worthy winner of the title of SpoilerTV’s August Readers’ Choice Performer of the Month.
Cara Delevingne’s performance in Kingdom of the Moons (1x3) of Amazon’s sumptuous new drama Carnival Row, is one for the ages. She plays Vignette Stonemoss, a fae caught between duty and love in a time of war. Every one of Delevingne’s scenes is electric, as her complete immersion in Vignette’s personality makes every heartbreak and thrill contagious. In this single episode, Delevingne conveys not only her character’s own dauntless spirit but also builds a connection for viewers to Vignette’s entire world and enables them to feel every shred of her grief and yearning when everything that matters to her is lost. The brighter moments are just as wonderfully performed; Delevingne soars enthusiastically through even the most peaceful scenes. In short, she creates magic. For this performance, the SpoilerTV Staff chose her as August’s Outstanding Performer of the Month.
August is usually a month full of surprises because most summer shows have wound down for the year and Fall shows have yet to premiere. That lull leaves the door open to surprises for this feature and this round saw us have our first-ever daytime performers nominated. After careful review of the rules of the feature we determined that there is nothing preventing them from being on the poll with their fellow nominees. They join the ranks of a list of talented performers and it will be interesting to see who will prevail this month from this list of powerhouse performers.
1. Althea: “We're not ghosts. What we lost doesn't define us. Maybe what we do. Maybe. Or maybe what we're running from. I don't know.” (Raina)
2. Wes: “Look, I know what you're trying to do here. You look at me, you see a guy who's taken a bit of a beating. You think maybe if I can appeal to that part of him from when his brother was still around, maybe I can change him. Maybe I can 'bring out the light'. That's got nothing to do with why I'm here or why I shot that scumbag.” Alicia: “Then, why did you do it?” Wes: “Because this is the way things are now. We shoot. We kill. If it's not him, it'd be someone else.” (Raina)
3. Althea: “Ready to head out?” Morgan: “Well, you were wrong, Al. And, um -- And you were right. I'm not running away from anything. But, yeah. I'm -- I am not a ghost and I am not just what I've lost. And I hold onto it because it is connected, you know? And it's... connected to everything.” Althea: “The good stuff, too.” Morgan: “Uh-huh. I've been seeing a bit of it lately. Jenny and... Duane and how we used to be. Anytime I try and get past it, I -- I try and put it behind me... I get worried I'm gonna lose some of the good, too. So I hold on to it all.” Althea: “We can make sure you don't lose anything you don't want to.” Morgan: “How?” Althea: “You can tell me about your wife and son.” Morgan, laughs: “Okay.” (Raina)
2. Petra: “I know I messed up.” Cat: “Yeah, you did.” Petra: “Yeah well, next time I’ll be smarter.” Cat: “Next time? Oh, there’s gonna be a next time.”
3. Ana: “Look, I know this is really hard for you.” Jake: “Oh, for all of us.” Ana: “Yeah, for all of us but especially you.” Jake: “You think I’m still in love with Cat.” Ana: “Well I know you think you are, but no, I...I don’t.” Jake: “I don’t even know what that means.” Ana: “Trying to recapture something that was...that was great and exciting because it couldn’t possibly last is one thing, but it’s not love.” Jake: “You think this is the right place and time for a discussion like this?” Ana: “Yes, I do because I want you to know that I’m still here, for now. Now, go and save Cat’s life.”
4. Petra: “My dad was Shorepound gang. It’s in my blood.” Cat: “Okay, you know, I was Shorepound Gang and I got out. This whole ‘it’s in my blood’ thing is a story you’ve been telling yourself for so long, you’re actually starting to believe it.” Petra: “Stop, okay?” Cat: “No, I won’t stop. You know why? Because I care that you make choices that are smart. I don’t want you doing something you can never escape from.” Petra: “It’s not a choice. It’s who I am.” Cat: “You’re 17-years-old. Who you are right now is just dumb. No offense.”
5. Woman: “You know, I see you trying so hard to be bad. I remember what it was like at your age.” Petra: “Yeah well, when I’m your age, I won’t be the loser who gets stuck in the basement.” Woman: “Well at the rate you’re going, you’ll never be my age.”
6. Jake: “Hey, we’ve been through a lot worse situations. I am not letting you die, Cat.” Cat: “Hey Jake...it’s okay.” Jake: “What is?” Cat: “To be scared.”
7. Otter: "Ever notice how everyone wants to be a kid except kids like you?" (Prpleight)
Please note that a performer can now only win once per year and a show can only be represented by two winners per year. No exceptions will be made for any performer or show, so please use thoughtful consideration when making your nominations. You will have to fill out the submission form for each nominee you submit. You can submit the document up to 5 times, but each entry must be for a different performer or all of your other nominations will be disqualified. The Top 5 most nominated actresses and Top 5 actors will be placed in the poll next week to determine the Readers' Choice Performer of the Month.

Because of its 2 wins already this year, Supernatural performers are no longer eligible for nomination in 2019. The 2 winners that have already won will be included in the 2019 Performer of the Year contest in January 2020, so they do still have one additional chance at winning.

After you place your nominations take a moment to use the comments section to discuss your nominees with others. Episode number for the nominees is critically important, so discuss with others why you think a performer deserves to be recognized for a specific performance within a single episode.

Nominations will run until September 7th at 6 pm ET. The poll will post on September 8th at 6 pm ET.

Last month it became obvious that the best format for entering the episode number is season number then episode number. So you can either enter the episode number as 101 or 1.01. Either will work on the form and both will be accepted.
Justyna: I've only just started the series but it certainly seems interesting. There's a whole new world to discover in the story and so far we've been watching it mostly through the eyes of its two main characters - Vignette and Philo. It's clear that there's a lot of history between the two and their story was abruptly interrupted leaving Vignette convinced that Philo was dead. When we're introduced to her character she's still in mourning (years later), so the pain is most certainly still fresh in her memory. That is why the news that he's alive hits her hard, even more when he tells her that the lie was intentional. I can't help but feel there's more to this reveal than he is saying but for now there doesn't appear to be any reason good enough for Vignette to forgive him. She seems almost ready to hurt him at one point, struggling with all her mixed feelings, before deciding that he's not worth her pain. She even wishes he was truly dead... It's quite an emotional introduction to the relationship between the two and both actors did a great job during the scene. I'm interested to see what's going to happen next. Kudos!
Justyna: This was such an entertaining episode. A brief chance to take a breath before the final battle, it would seem. Between Zeph, Pree and Turin opening the box and Johnny, Dutch and D'avin undercover or trying to get out of their restraints, there were a few fun moments that I could include in the article, but I decided to go with the more heartwarming option - the reunion at the end. The team is finally getting back together and it was nice to see them genuinely happy, even for a short while. Some of the show's best duos got their chance to shine. There's D'avin and Fancy, not willing to admit that they missed each other but still going for the hug. Then we have Dutch and Zeph, happily reunited and already planning to go back for the rest of their friends. Finally there's Johnny and Lucy. The fireworks were a nice touch and the rest of their conversation was both sweet and hilarious. Just a good scene overall. Kudos!
Milo: Stunningly shot and fantastically directed by Anthony Byrne with an utterly brilliant Anna Calvi soundtrack, this show looks wonderful and has never looked better. Cillian Murphy's acting is top notch, and the scene announcing the Billy Boys (like the Peaky Blinders, a real gang) intentions for Tommy Shelby was just terrific. That is how you make a scene a tense one.
Naomi: Jamie and Tasha discuss the death of Angela and its consequences for everyone. This scene was short but extremely explosive. In a few short moments, the priorities of each person was easy to see. Jamie continued to put his feelings above all else while Tasha tried to keep some semblance of a life together for their children. When Jamie told Tasha to think about how he feels because he lost the woman he loves, that was the final crushing blow for Tasha. Not only was Angela dead, but the marriage of Jamie and Tasha met its end as well. Fiercely acted and so entertaining!
Laura B: Finally my favorite Jane Austen novel, although unfinished, comes to life on screen in this wild adaption from Andrew Davies. I chose this scene at the ball towards the end of the episode, because of the way it both called back to Emma & Mr. Knightley, but also in some ways juxtaposed it, as Charlotte's analysis seems so spot on despite her lack of experience, making Theo James' wonderfully overdramatic reaction as Sidney, all the less undeserving towards a somewhat overly trusting Charlotte. Although Charlotte should be careful with what she says and shouldn't give her opinion so freely, really if you don't want someone's opinion, then you shouldn't ask!

SUCCESSION, "Hunting", August 25, 2019, Actors: Brian Cox and more
Saloni: The whole "boar on the floor" scene. It was complete madness.

THE TERROR, "Gaman", August 26, 2019, Actors: Kiki Sukezane, Eiji Inoue
The Scene: Yuko Tanabe kills Hideo Furuya
AMAZON PRIME VIDEO SETS AUGUST 30 DEBUT FOR NEW FANTASY DRAMA CARNIVAL ROW STARRING ORLANDO BLOOM AND CARA DELEVINGNE

Amazon Original Carnival Row Will Be Available Initially in the Original Version in More Than 200 Countries and Territories on August 30, With Dubbed Foreign Language Versions Coming Later This Year

SANTA MONICA, Calif., June 3, 2019 – Amazon Prime Video today announced Carnival Row, the one-hour Amazon Original fantasy drama series from Legendary Television starring Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevingne, will premiere Friday, August 30, 2019. The first look at art from the series was also released today along with a teaser. Carnival Row will be available initially in the original version in over 200 countries and territories, with dubbed foreign language versions coming later this year.

Bloom (Pirates of the Caribbean) and Delevingne (Suicide Squad) star in Carnival Row, a series set in a Victorian fantasy world filled with mythological immigrant creatures whose exotic homelands were invaded by the empires of man. This growing population struggles to coexist with humans — forbidden to live, love, or fly with freedom. But even in darkness, hope lives, as a human detective, Rycroft Philostrate (Bloom), and a refugee faerie named Vignette Stonemoss (Delevingne) rekindle a dangerous affair despite an increasingly intolerant society.

Vignette harbors a secret that endangers Philo’s world during his most important case yet: a string of gruesome murders threatening the uneasy peace of the Row.

Joining Bloom and Delevingne, the series also stars David Gyasi (Interstellar) as Agreus, a mysteriously wealthy faun who moves into an affluent human neighborhood in defiance of the social order, Karla Crome (Under the Dome) as Tourmaline, a quick-witted faerie poet driven from her war-torn homeland, Indira Varma (Game of Thrones) as Piety Breakspear, the regal and cunning matriarch of the powerful family that rules the city of The Burgue, and Tamzin Merchant (Salem) as Imogen Spurnrose, a young woman who sees in Agreus an opportunity to turn her aristocratic family's fading fortunes around.

Carnival Row is from Legendary Television, with executive producers Marc Guggenheim (Arrow, Eli Stone), René Echevarria (Star Trek, Teen Wolf, Castle, Medium), Jon Amiel (Outsiders), Bloom, and Travis Beacham (Pacific Rim, Clash of the Titans). Beacham’s A Killing on Carnival Row, on which the project is based, appeared on the very first installment of the Hollywood Blacklist in 2005.
Hello and welcome to a new edition of SpoilerTV's Weekly Round Table. Joining me this week is Klutzy_Girl, Kollin Lore, Giulia Del Buono, Jamie Coudeville, Cecile, Abby Crafton (AC), Milo M-J, Claire (CS), William (WK) and Vaughan Grey (VG). You just have to sit back enjoy the read and join the discussion in the comment section down below.

Another year and another SDCC done and dusted! What was your favourite piece of news / announcement to come out of SDCC this year?

Klutzy_Girl: All the Marvel news! I told myself after Endgame that I was still going to watch their upcoming movies but I wasn't as excited. As it turns out, I lied - Saturday's announcement has me impatiently waiting for Phase 4. All the casting news and movies/TV shows sound so interesting, and I hate that we have to wait so long for them. Most excited for The Eternals, Thor, and Shang Chi. The Supernatural panel was also one of my favorites considering it was its last, and it was emotional.

Kollin: The most jaw-dropping news had to be Blade getting his own MCU movie with Mahershali Ali in the titular role. That mic drop just came out of left field and was the perfect way to end the anticipated Hall H, Marvel panel.

Giulia: I'm gonna have to say Natalie Portman as Thor (I don't like saying female Thor) and Tessa Thompson announcing that she will need a queen by her side, making her the first openly queer character in the MCU. I had tears in my eyes! It was such a special moment! I am also really excited for "Eternals". That cast is insane!!

Jamie: My favorite(s) had to be the Marvel lineup news. Scarlet Witch being in Docter Strange 2, Natalie Portman returning as Thor, Tessa Tompson confirming Valkery is LGBT and all the release dates (even if they're still far away).

Cecile: Since most of the news are Marvel related and Marvel content doesn't interest me, I'll admit I tuned out pretty quickly in that regard.

AC: Brandon Routh playing Superman again for the Arrowverse crossover. It was probably inevitable ever since he was cast as Ray Palmer all those years ago for Arrow, but still cool.

Milo: It's impossible not to leave out the sheer importance of the MCU announcing their next slate that will no doubt define the first half of blockbuster cinema of the decade (and this isn't an exaggeration now that Endgame is the king of the box office) but one thing that surprised me the most was the announcement of Top Gun: Maverick, in talks for a while and although I only saw the original after learning of the sequel's existence, it gave me an excuse to watch one of the most enjoyable - if heavily flawed - films of the 1980s, and now, having watched the film and the Top Gun: Maverick trailer LOTS of times, I'm fully on board for this long overdue sequel. And I'm also absolutely here for Brandon Routh reprising the role as Superman for the upcoming Arrowverse crossover.

WK: So VERY excited to hear about the Blade reboot. It was a shame to see the franchise overlooked on so many different occasions considering the impact it had for Marvel as well as its significance within black culture. I’m crossing my fingers for an R-Rated take so the film can maintain the essence of its predecessor.

VG: Sorry, I couldn't care less about SDCC so I will abstain.

A number of trailers debuted at SDCC as hype and anticipation for a number of shows continues to build. Which trailer impressed you the most and what show are you most looking forward to?

Klutzy_Girl: I loved the His Dark Materials trailer, along with Watchmen! Both shows look great, and I absolutely can't wait for Dark Crystal.

Kollin: Gosh, there were so many trailers that impressed, it's hard to pick out one. His Dark Materials, Watchmen, Dark Crystal, The Witcher, Picard...Carnival Row is one under the radar show that looks breathtaking. The Expanse making its Amazon debut looks amazing in the tease. There's never been a year where I have anticipated this many shows over a 6 month period and the trailers for all of them did not disappoint. All the networks are just really ramping it up.

Giulia: "Westworld", for sure!! I am a huge fan of the show and season 3 seems to be very different from the first two seasons. Plus, Aaron Paul and Lena Waithe have joined the cast... count me in!
"His Dark Materials" had a very interesting trailer. I didn't know what it was, I don't know the story, but the cast is absolutely incredible and it all looks thrilling!

Jamie: I'm torn between the Westworld trailer and the Impulse trailer. The first is highly anticipated by many, especially now that things seem to be headed in quite a different direction. And Impulse is such a great but underrated show. The promo got me really excited about the second season.

Cecile: Ahh, so many awesome trailers, it's hard to pick just one! I can't wait for His Dark Materials, which looks great. I'm going to need a more precise release date than "This Fall" but hey, at least it will air this year and not 2020. Otherwise, the last IT: Chapter 2 trailer, Westworld's, and Dark Crystal's all look fantastic and I'm really excited to see the final products.

AC: The news that got me more excited than I ever thought I'd be about a cartoon was the Ducktales trailer and poster for the back half of season 2. Ducktales is a fantastic show with writing that is more clever and funnier than it has any right to be. And now they're bringing in characters from the other 1990s Disney afternoon shows to expand their universe! It's like I've returned to my childhood but better, since I don't have homework or my mom yelling at me to clean my room.

Milo: So many trailers! It's been non-stop. I did like the short teasers that we got for the new seasons of The Man in the High Castle and Preacher but one thing that really stood out to me was the phenomenal His Dark Materials trailer, which captured the spirit of the books in a way that the movie never did.

VG: His Dark Materials. It's almost made up for the New Line executives cancelling the final two films in the trilogy (in spite of The Golden Compass being a huge international hit) a decade ago...almost.

Big Little Lies aired its second season finale on Sunday. What did you make of it? Do you think this season lived up to the heights of season 1 or was the show returning one giant mistake?

Klutzy_Girl: This season as a whole has felt off because of the behind the scenes drama but Laura Dern, Zoe Kravitz, and Meryl Streep knocked it out of the park, especially in the finale. And we don't need a season three at all - would totally be fine with the show ending the way it did - but after that cliffhanger, I'm a little interested in one.

Giulia: I was one of the people who thought that BLL did not need a season 2. I thought that season 1 was so excellently done that it could easily end with a cliffhanger. But then the news of Meryl Streep joining the cast was revealed and I was like "gimme season 2 NOW!". I liked season 2, there's a very different take. The writing isn't as strong as season 1, but the actresses really stepped up their game and gave incredible, breathtaking performances. I am mad that Andrea Arnold allegedly did not have as much creative control as she wanted. I hope HBO will release the material that was cut, because that's basically diminishing a director's hard work and passion. Overall, I thought it was a great season 2. I don't even have to talk about Meryl Streep and how amazing she was, because that just goes without saying.

Jamie: I don't think it was possible to live up to season 1. Mainly, because season 2 was additional to the story. And I wouldn't be surprised if they announced that there will not be a third season, because aside from the cliffhanger, everyone's stories were pretty much wrapped up. But it was a great season. Meryl Streep was a great addition.

Cecile: Considering who's in the cast I didn't think I'd ever feel let down by the show but... the last few episodes weren't great, unfortunately. These seasons are only 7 episodes long and yet some still felt like filler, which is a shame what with the talent involved. Meryl was fantastic though, and the season was entertaining but it could've been so much better. It kind of felt like Fantastic Beasts compared to Harry Potter. The world is there, but the heart & soul aren't.

Milo: I'm behind on Big Little Lies Season 2 but so far so good, even if all the behind the scenes drama seems to be causing chaos this season. It was never needed and could have done with letting Andrea Arnold get free reign on the series completely - but the cast are strong enough to carry it and so far the drama is strong despite its flaws.

Claire: I was glad that BLL received a season 2 order, but after the disjointed mess that I’ve watched for the last 7 weeks I’m not so sure. Don’t get me wrong, the performances (especially Dern, Streep and Kidman) were phenomenal and the visuals were gorgeous, but it was all over the place. I just did not get the point of Bonnie’s mom and her offensive voo doo storyline and how Bonnie’s story was so incomplete and nonsensical at times. I mean why have Bonnie spend half of the season in a hospital room with her comatose mother? This was also a waste of a neat dynamic that had been playing out between the mother and daughter. Maybe if they have another season, they can get rid of a few of the editors and stick with ONE director’s vision! It was a travesty how they mucked up director Andrea Arnold’s beautiful work. I think that this may have been a fatal mistake to season 2 and why it definitely did not live up to season 1. But even at its worst, BLL was still better than most...
High points: Renata Klein’s batting practice on her cheating husband’s man cave toys and Mary Louise and Celeste’s courtroom showdown...

WK: BLL S2 was completely unnecessary. There were barely any gains from the new installment as the plots for the most part were either choppy or poorly conceived. Celeste’s storyline was the saving grace of what culminated into a convoluted mess. When an ensemble cast places its weight on one performer to truly carry the series, there’s a clear problem.

Renata morphed into a caricature as her storyline was not only riddled in cliches, but lacked depth. Madeline’s arc was frivolous compared to the more pressing matters that the other women faced (not to mention, she was just plain annoying and too self involved). Jane was relatively quiet despite experiencing a major emotional blow from last year. Lastly, Bonnie’s characterization was just offensive and lazy. The way they purposefully marginalized her character compared to the others, while poorly depicting the dysfunctional relationship Bonnie had with her mother made it apparent that the producers hadn’t consulted with black inclusive writers.

When you decide to include a black character in an otherwise white series, there’s a responsibility to attend towards such unique experiences as a means of maintaining authenticity. BLL incorporated hastily flashbacks to showcase the trauma Bonnie endured, while only acknowledging her blackness once. Such dynamics deserved to be fully capture to understand its full impact on Bonnie. Also, the mystical elements that were incorporated were racist by reinforcing the tired magical negro trope. Not impressed.

VG: No. The whole season was a dramatic letdown. Then again, season 1 was extremely overrated in the first place. It's already been said by the previous commentators, but the way the characters were written was cartoonish at best (they even had Nicole Kidman's Celeste compare herself to superheroes in the finale) and just obnoxious at worst (too many examples to site). When they hired Andrea Arnold as director of season 2, I had high hopes, but not even Meryl Streep could make the writing bearable. I realize David E Kelly played to his strengths and nothing he writes can be changed since he is so powerful, but he should have stuck with network TV and leave HBO prestige TV alone IMHO. The reports of the behind the scenes power grab against Andrea Arnold are not a surprise and the final televised edit kind of insulted the audience's intelligence. The acting and directing were fine enough, but when the scripts don't work, the work suffers as a whole. The whole point of the season felt unrealistic since Perry's death in the season 1 finale could be considered both self-defense and accidental in the first place, so why these women are so worried about potential jail time for it is a little beyond me aside from giving themselves (and the audience) closure...and AT&T/HBO decent summer ratings.

Ahead of the first season dropping this week, Amazon have already announced that The Boys has been renewed for a second season. With the show getting a slightly mixed reception from critics, do you think Amazon are jumping the gun with this?

Klutzy_Girl: No. I think Amazon knows what they're doing and they obviously liked the show. Looking forward to it!

Kollin: Slightly mixed reception? Most of the reviews are overwhelmingly positive, save for a few reviewers who are known to be trolls like those dudes from Slash and Forbes. I don't think Amazon is jumping the gun, they must know they have a hit on their hands, especially amidst the positive things that many of the credible reviewers are saying. It's also a good way to market The Boys, makes it seem like a big deal now that it got an early renewal.

AC: With DC Universe cancelling Swamp Thing fast and the Netflix Marvel shows gone, it was probably good PR for Amazon to do a quick renewal of a superhero show.

Milo: If Preacher was anything to go by then we're in for some more insanity and weirdness of The Boys and especially given so many shows cancelling midway through their first seasons or leaving audiences on a hook without telling them the fate of their shows (like Cloak and Dagger is still waiting for a season three confirmation), getting a headstart encourages audiences to check it out knowing that they won't be let down if the show doesn't make it past season two. That said, it doesn't make it immune from cancellation - I'm still bitter at HBO for pulling the plug on Vinyl after an early renewal.

VG: No. I feel it could be a big hit, at least for the 1st season. Amazon doesn't need the money and should take more chances like this since they have been on a cancel-spree of late. The comics are entertaining, it has a built-in audience thanks to Preacher, Eric Kripke always does interesting work, and the cast is fantastic. Then again, after what happened when Cinemax renewed Outcast before it premiered a few year ago, anything is possible. And Amazon did just cancel The Tick after a hit 1st season and a diminishing 2nd season....so...
