While not quite the blowout of Round 1A, Round 1B didn't have any close polls either. It looks like the first round will take out many of our first time characters. Interesting because we had more new characters get into the Cup this year than any other year. At 29 new characters, almost half are new. Over in the prediction contest, congrats to Nick, who has only missed 2 polls so far.

Proceeding to round 2 so far are Scylla Ramshorn, Caitlin Snow, Colleen Wing, Fallon Carrington, Lena Luthor, Elizabeth Jennings, Sara Lance, Angela Abar, Sam Winchester, Raymond Holt, Seeley Booth, Nicole Haught, Oliver Queen, John Reese, and Leo Fitz. Here's hoping for some great polls today. Three of my favorite characters are in this bracket so my wish list might be a bloodbath. Don't forget to pass the word and happy voting!

To ensure that everybody has a good time, please read the rules below. It is important that everyone be kind and fair to make this the most fun for everyone. There are also links below to the list of character rankings/stats, character videos, and the prediction contest leaderboard. The daily TV Talk Topic will be found above the polls each time. We have a new TV Talk Topic every day and all are encouraged to participate. It's my favorite part of the contest. I’ve also added the bracket results below the polls.

For those of you with underdog characters, get the word out now because the round 1 is where the biggest change can happen. Generally there are fewer votes in round 1, so it is far easier for an upset. Good luck to all and happy voting!

Character Cup Rules:

1. Don't take it too seriously! Have fun. Discuss. Play nice.

2. Cheaters suck! - Only one vote per person per poll please. While we will do our best to keep this contest running smoothly, it's up to each person to follow the rules. This contest is just a fun little piece of internet fluff during hiatus. It won't get anyone's show renewed or un-cancelled. It has zero effect on ratings. It won't even be seen by anyone who has any power in the TV industry, so there is zero reason to cheat. All cheaters do is disrespect themselves, their fandom, their show, the actors, and this community. Just don't.

3. Focus on characters, not people. Talking about what you like and dislike about a character is encouraged. Going after actors or fans is not.

4. The aliens have not landed. There's no conspiracy here. I will do my very best to keep the contest running smoothly, but I do make mistakes. I apologize in advance for any technical difficulties, spelling errors, and general absentmindedness. Let me know and I'll fix it.

5. Comments are life. As you anxiously await the return of your shows, why not distract yourself with a little TV Talk? Each day is a new topic so even if your favorites are out, you can still discuss. Last year, the consensus was to narrow the focus of the topics but feel free to go off on any tangent you want. While this contest is just a silly little distraction, the conversation here dives deep, so jump on in.

6. Nuts and Bolts - All polls are active for about 24 hours. The winners advance to the next round. In the case of a tie, both characters go to the next round. New polls should go up every day and polls may sometimes overlap each other. Any questions? Ask away in the comments.

TV Talk Topic:

TV Talk Topic: Promotion Time - If you could pick a minor or secondary character on a currently airing/renewed TV show to promote to a series regular, who would you pick and why? (Thanks to Ellys Cartin for the topic idea.)

The first round of the 2020 Character Cup will start on Sunday or Monday, depending on where you live. Until then, I'm assigning homework. (What can I say? I'm a teacher.) I need good headshot pictures of ALL of the characters. Otherwise your favorite character is stuck with the first picture I find on Google. The guidelines are below. You can send them to me via Twitter @dahne1 or put them in the comments below. Thanks in advance for your help in this. It's a tremendous time saver for me.

Picture Guidelines:

1. Must be clear (not blurry), clothed and PG please!
2. Clearly shows the character's face
3. Is just the character, NOT a group thing
4. Must be the character and not the actor (no premiere party or tabloid photos)
5. No gifs - jpeg or png only please

Character Videos:

Character Videos: Also, last year people overwhelmingly said that they wished there were videos spotlighting the characters. If you know of a good video, please send me the link on Twitter or put it here. Thanks so much for ALL of your help!

Nominations are now closed and it's time to finalize our bracket. Today is all about the nominating and ranking polls. With over 1300 valid character nominations, which represented almost 550 characters, there is a lot of variety in the nominees, which should make for a great contest. Before we get started though, we need to take care of some business. First off, we need to determine the final characters to get into this year's Cup with the nominating poll. We also have ties in some crucial positions so anyone in the top 24 who got the same number of nominations will have ranking polls. After the top 24, characters will be ranked randomly to reduce the sheer amount of characters in polls we would have. Polls will stay open until around 10 pm CST on July 8. Happy voting!

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

1. If you don't see your favorite characters, that does NOT necessarily mean that they didn't make it in. Many characters are already set and don't need a poll. In the nominating poll, the characters with the most votes will proceed into the contest, unless they are from the same TV show. In that case, only one will be in the Cup. In the ranking polls, every character is already in the Character Cup.

2. You can only vote for 1 character per poll and no voting results will be shown.

3. Polls will close around 10 pm CST on July 8. The prediction contest will begin shortly after that. Things go rapidly in the Character Cup so check in daily to keep from missing anything.

4. Don’t forget to say who you voted for in the comments. It’s a great place to talk up your favorites too. Also, if you have additional ideas for our TV Talk Topics, post them here. Again, happy voting!
Luana: There were so many memorable moments in this season, and with flaws and all this show has portrayed some of the most pressing issues for young generations today. You could never say this show went unnoticed and there’s a reason so many felt touched by it. In their speeches, Clay and Jessica talked about love and loss and tried to give everyone a push to keep moving forward, no matter what, even when it all seems like it’s too much. This felt like it was a perfect goodbye for this groundbreaking show.
Justyna: Introducing Agent Daniel Sousa on the show has certainly been one of the highlights of the season. I really enjoyed his character on "Agent Carter" but I'm already loving his addition to the SHIELD team. I used to think that Daniel and Peggy got their happy ending after the interrupted run of her series. To learn that his fate was to become the first fallen Agent of SHIELD was such a sad surprise. It did make all the sense in the world, though. Agent Sousa has proved to be one of the best spies and agents on both shows, so the fact that he discovered the truth about Hydra decades before everyone else, only proves his talent and skills. I'm so glad that Mack and the rest of the team made the decision to save him. He never gets a chance to say goodbye to his loved ones, he finds himself in a different time and surrounded by strangers, but he's alive. And he takes the news as well as he possibly could. I liked how open Coulson was with his introduction to this new reality. "Life after death" is of course something he's very familiar with and this time he gets to be there for someone else going through an impossible experience. Welcome to the team, Agent Sousa! Glad to have you here.
Dahne: Lizzie is forced between choosing to humiliate herself on Facebook for a creepy ex's vanity or keeping Jackie from getting a needed job. What I love about this scene is that Lizzie starts by explaining to Jackie about how the only thing she has left is her dignity. She's pleading her case but for once Jackie is very understanding and agrees that Lizzie should not humiliate herself. It's this understanding that forces Lizzie to realize that none of the people on Facebook are worth as much to her as a sister. For only having 13 episodes, the character of Lizzie has had a great arc and has become one of my favorite new characters.
COUNCIL OF DADS, "Heart Medicine", June 4, 2020, Actors: Thalia Tran, Sarah Wayne Callies and more
The Scene: Charlotte comes out at the ashes ceremony
Luana: This scene was so heartwarming, not only because of how much love there is here but also because of how it made Oliver feel as well. He was so happy that Charlotte felt safe to come out to her family so young when it took him so much more time. It was all absolutely adorable.
Justyna: This is one of the craziest (if not the craziest) shows that I've ever seen. I caught up with the series in between seasons and it's still hard to believe even half of the things that happened to its main characters so far. But underneath all the insanity this show is filled with tragic stories and painful past of every single member of Doom Patrol. In the season premiere, Negative Spirit shows Larry a vision of his son, Gary. He's now an older man, but he still misses his father and doubts whether he was ever proud of his kids. Larry tries to reach out to him but it's far too late as he realizes that Gary is taking his own life and there's nothing he could do about it. The vision stops and later Larry checks the news to confirm his fears. Gary is gone. After attending his funeral from the distance Larry meets with his other son and eventually finds his way to Gary's house, or rather a barn next to the house. Inside there's a number of mementos of Larry kept by his son throughout all these years. He never stopped believing that his father has survived the crash, he looked for him decades later and never truly moved on. The realization that he wasn't there for his kids, not before or after his personal tragedy, hurts Larry to the core. He breaks down after finding a letter from young Gary addressed to him, asking him to come back. It's an absolutely heartbreaking and very memorable moment.

HIGHTOWN, "The White Whale", June 21, 2020, Actors: Monica Raymund, Amaury Nolasco
The Scene: Jackie confronts Frankie
Folie-lex: It's been no secret I've had my issues with Jackie all season, but she truly came into her own in this scene. Frankie is the reason Sherry was killed. And finding her on that beach is what haunts Jackie and has accelerated this downward spiral she can't get herself out of. Coming face to face with him and finding some purpose in that was cathartic for the character and gave her arc some proper direction and intent. Not to mention Monica killed it.

IN THE DARK, "The Last Dance", June 18, 2020, Actors: Perry Mattfeld, Brooke Markham, Nicki Micheaux, The Scene: Jess shoots Nia
Beth: Jess came through in the nick of time to save Murphy's life even though their friendship was at a breaking point. It showed that while the two may be strained, Jess will always be Murphy's person. It was also such a shocking moment that it would be Jess, who saved Nia earlier in the season, to pull the trigger.

LOVE LIFE, "Sara Yang", June 11, 2020, Actors: Anna Kendrick, Zoë Chao
The Scene: Darby breaks up with her best friend
Luana: This scene was heartbreaking, Darby kept trying to help Sara and she thought she had gotten through to her, but when she realized it was all going to stay the same she decided to make a choice, a very hard one. You can see how much pain she’s in but she knows there’s no other way. This show was a very pleasant surprise and I love that they didn’t just focus on romantic relationships but also those with family and friends.

SNOWPIERCER, "Without Their Maker", June 7, 2020, Actors: Jennifer Connelly, Kerry O'Malley, The Scene: Melanie wins the stand-off with Lilah
Dahne: There were a lot of great scenes in this intense, gamechanger episode. However, instead of one of the more epic scenes, it is this one that fascinated me. When Lilah demands to speak to Mr. Wilford, Melanie is seconds away from losing control. Instead, she bluffs magnificently. It's a power struggle in a way that only two very powerful women maneuver, with a tour de force performance from both actors. When Melanie offers the phone to Lilah with that penetrating stare, I had goosebumps. There is no doubt that Melanie is the ultimate power on this train and she doesn't need a weapon to prove it.
Justyna: For a while I couldn't quite decide which scene to highlight from this show. It has turned out to be such a nice surprise and had many memorable moments that aired during this month, including Joey's death, a flashback to Yolanda's past and Rick learning the truth about his parents' death. In the end, I decided to highlight the first confrontation between the new JSA led by Courtney and two of the deadliest members of the ISA - Sportsmaster and Tigress. The teenagers were clearly not ready for this fight but it was such an impressive scene overall. All the individual battles were a great display of everyone's skills and possibilities. I really appreciate the extended shots without constant cuts and the wire work didn't bother me at all. Yolanda managed to survive her fight with Tigress with a little help from Beth. Rick was injured by Sportsmaster but saved by Stargirl who actually managed to hold her own against Sportsmaster, but couldn't take down the married duo fighting together. Just when the two teams are standing opposite each other, ready for another attack, S.T.R.I.P.E. shows up and the ISA leaves. I loved that we actually got to see the shot from Crisis on Infinite Earths. Kudos to the cast, stunt crew and everyone responsible for making this one memorable. I'm very interested to see how this new JSA will continue to grow and learn from each experience.
Folie-lex: It was a toss up between this and Sutton's final breakdown, but we're far from done with the baby issue so I had to give this scene the edge. Jacqueline and Ian's marriage has spent most of S4 being on the fritz. And when they've had the whole episode expecting us for another backtrack in their relationship, we instead have Ian step up like it's nobody's business, not only swooping in with a big gesture, but making sure it's done under the right context. These two might actually make it. I sure hope they do!
Luana: This was a heartbreaking episode for Sutton, she’s in so much pain and feels so much guilt. But it also killed me to see in Richard's face how much he wishes he could take her pain away and how heartbroken he is about being unable to do that. It was a small moment but the hug they shared said absolutely everything without many words.

WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS, "Nouveau Théâtre des Vampires", June 10, 2020, Actors: Harvey Guillén and more, The Scene: Guillermo goes on a vampire slaughter spree at the theatre
Folie-lex: The whole season, I'd even argue the whole show, had been leading up to this moment... and it was exactly as EPIC as it was meant to be! Guillermo went full-on slayer, I'm sure Buffy herself would be impressed.

YOU ME HER, "Home Is Where the Flaming Heart Is", June 7, 2020, Actors: Melanie Papalia, Priscilla Faia and more, The Scene: The ending
Luana: This show was such a great surprise for me, so funny and heartfelt, and it brought me some of my favorite characters ever. Nina is my spirit animal and her friendship with Izzy was epic, so seeing them all together as a big happy family warmed my heart. They all managed to get over their preconceived ideas of what their lives should be and they found a way to be happy, and that’s something that feels all the more essential every day.
We’ve finally come upon the end of 13 Reasons Why. It has certainly been a much talked about series, both in positive and negative ways. So for the last time, here are my 2 cents on this season of 13 Reasons Why. Beware, spoilers below.

Why did you do that? For the past 3 seasons, there has been a system for the episodes. Each one focusses on a different character. I liked that system because it gave the side characters more screen time than they otherwise would’ve gotten. But for some reason the writers decided not to do that this season and I must say, I’m not a fan. There was way too much Clay this season. I get it, he’s the main character but there was still. And yeah, I’ve never really liked the guy. Between his possessiveness of Hannah (a girl he never dated) to the weird hallucinations in season 2 (which kind of got explained this season) to his overall shadiness last season (which was just the writers trying to confuse us). It all went downhill pretty quickly for him this season. I’m glad they showed him in therapy, but I feel like the writers could’ve done a bit more with that storyline. Did anyone else feel like it was resolved too quickly? There were the phases of not remembering what he’d done, where he basically terrorized himself and his friends, and then the breakdown at the police station. But after that things went from Justin’s death to graduation so quickly. Dealing with your mental illness isn’t that… easy. And yeah, he’ll be seeing a counselor at college but it still felt too easy for me.

I’m so conflicted: By the time I finished episode 8, I was fully convinced that I hated this season. I was going to tear this show a new one. But then came episodes 9 and 10. And I finally realized what I’d been missing these past episodes (and in season 3 as well). These are kids, but we so rarely get to see them be kids. They spend all their time worrying about who will find out their secret about the murder cover-up. It was so nice to actually see them being honest with their parents (even if they had ulterior motives). They should’ve been doing that from the start. Trust me, if I had covered up a murder, I would definitely tell my mom. And then we got to see them at prom actually enjoying themselves. I think that episode might actually be my favorite, you know before it all went to hell. More on Justin later. Episode 10 had a large nostalgia factor but I didn’t mind (except for the part where they used old Hannah footage). I was glad to see them all end up in a good place.

He deserved better: All except 1, of course. We should’ve known not all of them would make it to the end alive. But the fact that it was Justin really pissed me off. Don’t get me wrong, I thought his sendoff was handled beautifully. But he didn’t deserve to go out like this. After everything he’s been through, he finally got his life back on track. He was doing so well and then this happens. All of a sudden he’s dying of aids. Seriously?! And did anyone feel like the whole point of his death was to further everyone else’s character progression? This sucked, plain and simple. He deserved his own happy ending. And this is coming from someone who didn’t even like him when the show first started.

I’m proud of you: After talking about Justin, it’s impossible not to go to Jessica next. I think that out of everyone, she’s grown the most throughout this show. It’s so great to see her fight for what she believes in and not let anyone tell her to be quiet. And if it scared the guys at school, that’s their problem. And I love how often she stood up to the principle, who made a lot of questionable decisions (more on that later). He must have been really happy to see her graduate. But I can guarantee you that if she hears anything she doesn’t like from Estela, she’ll be back there leading a revolt.

Why is no one more worried? Something that bothered me all season was Zach and how no one seemed all that concerned about his behavior. Everyone was so worried about the secret and Clay losing but Zach was also showing some very destructive behavior but no one really seemed to care enough to help him. And, yeah, it all worked out in the end. But it very well might not have. Was I the only one bothered by this?

They’re jerks but I kind of get it: Yes, Diego and Winston were annoying at times and they got in the way of our main characters a lot. But look at it from their perspective. Winston knows Monty didn’t kill Bryce. He knows they covered up who actually did and framed Monty. Him trying to uncover the truth doesn’t make him a bad guy. They did actually cover up a murder. And the same goes for Diego. He’s trying to clear his friend’s name. The only thing they did seem to forget was that Monty wasn’t in jail for murder. He’s in jail for the sexual assault of a minor. Which he actually did do. And that’s what got him killed. So it did annoy me that they kept acting like he was totally innocent and died because of Clay and the rest of them. He got himself into that mess.

Cutest couple: If there’s one thing I saw a lot of online after the season was released, it was Charlie and Alex. I have to be honest here. I totally did not remember who Charlie was. When I started watching the first episode of this season I actually went “Am I supposed to know who this guy is?” And then I had to look it up. That said, Charlie quickly won me over and became one of my favorites. He’s such an amazing guy. His relationship with Alex seems to be one of the healthier ones on the show. I think this season was the first time that actually took Alex’s storyline in a better direction. He’s struggled a lot in the past and it’s nice to see him do better.

I know, okay: I’m still conflicted about the outcome of Bryce’s murder investigation. I didn’t want Alex to go to jail for killing Bryce, because I still feel like the guy had it coming. But I don’t think it’s fair that Monty got blamed for it after he died. Yes, Monty did a terrible thing but that doesn’t mean you can just add murder to it when he can’t even defend himself. I’m not sure there was a right outcome here.

Couldn’t have handled it any worse if you tried: I can’t believe that the principal actually gave himself a pat on the back for a job well done. The cameras and metal detectors were one thing, though it made it look like a courthouse or something. But helping parents spy on their kids. What happened to communication? I feel like those parents are the ones who need therapy if they think hacking into the computers and phones of their kids is healthy behavior. And then there was that brilliant idea of terrifying every student by making them think they were going to die. Nicely done. Because seeing this stuff on TV isn’t terrifying enough. Let’s have them actually live through it and traumatize them for no reason. I’m from Europe so all of this looks like some dystopian nightmare to me but I wanna know, is it actually like this in schools in the US? Or are the writers just exaggerating? Because I’ve seen metal detectors on several TV schools. The same with those weird cop/guard guys. And while I’ve always said the schools in my country should offer CPR and first aid in high school, patching up gunshot wounds seems like overkill.

Now you’re just doing it on purpose: I’ve noticed, both this season and in previous seasons that this show loves to add shock factor elements. And I don’t mean twists and turns in the storylines. I mean blood and gore and graphic. It was one thing in season 1, with the rape scenes, the suicide scene, … There was a lot of backlash for that. And I still don’t understand why they changed Hannah’s method of suicide, in the books she overdosed on pills, to something way more graphic. But then there was that rape scene in season 2, which I still haven’t watched (thankfully I was warned by the internet). And sure, they added a warning at the beginning of the episodes. But I don’t really feel like that’s enough. How about just skipping the scene with the shower walls covered in blood?

Was it really necessary? I keep going back and forth about this series when it comes to the number of seasons it had. I have to be honest, when I saw the renewal news for seasons 3 and 4, I asked: “Why?”. Usually, 1 book does not become a 4 season show. I mean, look at what happened to Game of Thrones when they ran out of books. I didn’t mind season 2. It delved more into the consequences of what happened in season 1 and it gave us more backstory. But once we got to seasons 3 and 4 I failed to see the point. The storyline dropped the Hannah angle and instead it became a “who did it?” show. While season 4 was basically “How to get away with murder”. I did like the closure that season 4 gave us, but they could’ve also done that in 2 seasons rather than 4.
Best quotes: Clay: “Recount a time when you faced a challenge, setback, or failure. How did it affect you and what did you learn from the experience? I mean, fuck you.”
Justin: “Don’t freak out.” Clay: “Why not?”
Diego: “I mean, maybe assuming that calling someone gay is automatically an insult.. maybe that’s the fucked-up thing.”
Clay: “Anxiety is a motherfucker. Excuse my language.”
Clay: “Yeah, anxiety, panic. It’s not about what you know is coming. It’s about what you don’t.
Clay: “You think that this is the way to make us safe? You know what would make me feel safe? Not having to go to a school with metal detectors or video cameras or armed fucking guards!”
Clay: “You are killing us! Don’t you get that? You made a drill with gunshots and hammered down the door to prepare us for what exactly? For what it feels like to be hunted? To practice getting ready to die, to make us feel afraid for our lives? We already know how that feels! You’re scaring us to death!”
Clay: “Look, they’re gonna try to make us think that we’re the problem, but we are not the problem! We go to the school that they built for us. We live in the society that they made for us, and shit is broken! Shit is wrong! And they can’t fix it. They won’t! So it’s our turn now. We’re gonna make it right if we have to burn it down and start over. So I say fuck it all.”
Jessica: “What’s really going on here… is hat we’re gonna have a prom. And I’m gonna fucking dance like I don’t have a care in the world, and for one minute, just one, I’ll be free from all of this shit.” Foundry: “And I wish I could promise that Jessica, I truly do, but I can’t.” Jessica: “I don’t need you to. I’ll make it happen.”
Jessica: “I have a number of parents, including my father, the colonel, and Mrs. Achola, an immigrant, prepared to ask why students of color were disproportionately singled out in the questioning.” Bolan: “Do we know that they were?” Jessica: “Do you really want to count?”
Charlie: “Yeah, Jessica Davis does not fuck around.” Jessica: “No, she doesn’t.”
Jessica: “Look here’s the thing. There should be more of us here. And lately, I have been thinking about why they’re not here. I have a history of causing trouble with my speeches. Principal Bolan actually had to approve my speech just so I wouldn't make trouble. But that was a month ago. And my life has changed since then. But don't worry, I'm not causing any trouble today. Because I just want you to hear me. Some of you circulated a petition this year, demanding I be removed from office. Saying that I was a one-issue president, and I had made my point, and I should just shut up. Well, no girls signed that petition. So, news, boys, our point is far from made. And we're not shutting up. But you are right about one thing: I am a one-issue president. I'm a one-issue person. I spent the last couple of years angry. Hurt. Scared. But I'm not gonna do that anymore. I'm gonna focus on my one issue. Which is love. Oh, what? Does talking about love make you embarrassed? Is it girly? What? Because it's the thing. It's the only thing. It's easy to hate. It's easy to fear. It's goddamn hard to love. But it's not optional. It's essential. It's life or death. I challenge you. Love each other. Do it. Do it better. Now and every day. I love you all. Oh, and fuck the patriarchy.”
Scott: “Wait, so you're gonna study music?” Zach: “Yeah!” Chloe: “That’s awesome, Zachy!” Zach: “It’s great!” Chloe: “And your mom is totally cool with it?” Zach: “Well, she thinks it's for violin, and it's actually for guitar and voice, but one step at a time.” Foundry: “I'm gonna forget I know that last bit.” Zach: “Probably for the best, yeah.”

2020 sure has been a weird one. With increased time at home, it feels like we've already been in a summer's worth of hiatus even though it has barely started. If you've been busily working your way through your to-watch list since April, you may find your supply of shows to watch dwindling like toilet paper. Never fear! The SpoilerTV community is here to provide months more of shows to check out. (And if you really need it, I can send some toilet paper.) With around 230 pitches and over 170 shows covered, Pitch Your Show is supersized this year. So kick up your feet, grab your remote, and get ready to find your next favorite binge.

Thank you to everyone who helped with the pitches. To keep the articles shorter and more readable, all pitches were edited for length, clarity, and grammar. I have also limited nominations to 3 per show with a couple very popular shows having 4. I am truly sorry if your nomination is not in here. Know that I appreciate your time and pitches. Making the choice of what went in was difficult. After all sections are posted, I will include a link to the original spreadsheet so you can read them all in their unedited entirety.

I hope that every reader finds at least one show they are interested in trying. If you do, please comment in the section below. I know those who nominated would love to hear from you. Thanks again to everyone who created pitches. They have been a fun read and I have been busy adding things to my to-watch list already. Without further ado, here are the pitches for TV shows #-A. The rest will follow daily.
-3 seasons, 46 episodes

1. The North Remembers - Created by Ryan Murphy, it explores the lives of the police, fire department, and paramedics of Los Angeles. While the concept of first responders is nothing new, what makes 9-1-1 different from the Chicago shows, other than the city, is that all three types of responders coexist in one setting and it blends the stories of all three departments, allowing for more synergy in the storytelling. With nonstop action and a cast of well-written characters, 9-1-1 tells a familiar concept with its own identity, portraying the on and off job struggles of modern day heroes.
-1 season, 10 episodes

1. LauraLoo - 9-1-1: Lone Star is a spinoff series of the original 9-1-1 that stands on its own and can be watched by someone who hasn't seen the mothership. Captain Owen Strand is called to revitalize Austin fire squad 1-2-6 after a tragedy killed all but one firefighter. The new squad consists of: himself, his son TK, one the best written gay characters in existence, who is over-eager and filled with trauma and hope, Paul, a trans man with Sherlock-ian powers of deduction, Marjan, a Muslim woman with a penchant for becoming a viral sensation due to her badassery, Mateo, a probie with dyslexia that has prevented him from becoming a firefighter so far, and Judd, the lone survivor from the original crew struggling with PTSD. Responders Grace, Carlos, and Michelle are along for the ride too, each with their own quirks. This may seem like forced diversity, but be assured that it's not - it's even discussed in canon that this is essential and not tokenism. The characters themselves are your reason to watch. As all episodes have recently finished airing and it’s renewed for a second season with a good foundation for the future, now is an excellent time to binge this show.

1. The North Remembers - This show is centred around James Cole, a man from the year 2043, where the world is an apocalyptic wasteland after a virus has ravaged everything. Cole is recruited to use a dangerous and untested method of time travel to go back to the present day and stop the virus from being released. He teams up with Cassie Railly, a doctor who is the key to stopping the virus, but the mission is easier said than done when both realize the cost of changing time. As they suddenly find their personal ethics questioned, they have to determine how far they’ll go to save the future.
-4 seasons, 49 episodes

1. Luana - I’m pretty sure this show needs no introduction, but if for some reason you missed the train, I think it’s something still worth watching. Recommending something that can disappoint is tricky, but since the show has been wrapped up, I now feel more confident singing its praises than ever. It started as a specific story, and it was a great one, which is why many didn’t think it should be continued, but it ended up transforming into a show that tackles every anxiety young people feel about the world today. Regardless of the fact that they’re still in high school, many apply to a much broader spectrum of issues. It has some great moments and some that are hard to watch, but if you’re up to it, it can show you things from a perspective you might not have thought of before. It’s all very real and very gray, but it has lovable, flawed characters to hold your hand all the way through to the end.
-9 seasons, 203 episodes

1. The North Remembers - 24 is probably one of the earliest depictions of television that was capable of blending a well-written drama series with real life events and politics in a balanced way, making it informative but nuanced and also entertaining. Kiefer Sutherland plays Jack Bauer, an agent for LA’s counterterrorism unit, who more often than not is at the centre of various attacks and conspiracies that threaten his country. What really makes 24 standout is its unique narrative use of real time. Each season is encompassed into a single day of Jack’s life and each episode is one hour of that day, making for a fast-paced show with far-reaching plots. 24 is an action drama with compelling, intricate storylines airing at a time when the world was forever changed by the September 11th attacks. The way 24 handled political depictions at that era is why this show remains one of the most timely and relevant series of all time.
-7 seasons, 136 episodes

1. Noor - Anyone who knows me knows I am obsessed with this show so take that in mind as you read this pitch. Agents of Shield is a show that follows a group of agents trying to save the world in the backdrop of the Marvel universe. This group is made up of a diverse cast of really well-developed characters that are flawed and make mistakes. It’s a show that isn’t afraid to experiment and isn’t scared of backlash as they broach sensitive topics or have fan favorites go dark, and it does all that while having fun! So. Much. Fun! But also tears and pain! It rewards you for watching with twists, turns, and attention to details. Things in this show also flow naturally. Very few things feel contrived and the dialogue feels authentic. With amazing performances, even smaller characters end up shining. And yes, season 1 is lackluster but I ended up looking fondly on it, so don’t let it deter you. This show will also not explain a lot of things that I only realized on re-watch or by overthinking, so if that sort of thing bothers you then maybe it’s not the show for you.
1. ??? - We spent decades seeing heartthrobs and American sweethearts having their lives represented on the screen. We saw their dreams being amazing and an epic fail too. We also cheered with every single plot twist. Now the game changes hands and we finally have a genuine and charismatic themed road (movie) series without death, without AIDS, and without punishment for the fact that the characters are not straight. AJ and the Queen allows us this whole Ephonist universe, beyond the rainbow.
-1 season, 8 episodes

1. Milo - After the complete and utter failure of the would-be franchise starter Stormbreaker, Amazon’s new Alex Rider series feels like something of a course-correction for Anthony Horowitz’s young adult novels, focusing around the titular teenage spy protagonist. It’s very much James Bond, Jr., but the show succeeds in updating the series for the modern era, a perfect stop gap for fans of the spy genre waiting for No Time to Die. Rather than re-treading Stormbreaker’s plot, Alex Rider switches gears and combines the origins of Horowitz’s first book with the plot of the sequel, Point Blank. Alex finds himself working as a spy, sent to a mysterious European boarding school for the elite in the wake of his uncle’s death and the discovery that his uncle worked for a British intelligence agency. Faithful to the books to the point where dialogue is lifted word-for-word straight out of the source material, Alex Rider benefits from some atmospheric direction and a strong cast. Otto Farrant is convincing as the protagonist and the likes of Vicky McClure and Brenock O’Connor shine in supporting roles. If you’re looking for something to watch with the family, this show is a safe bet.
1. Folie-lex - All Rise follows newly appointed judge, Lola Carmichael, as she and the array of all the other servants of the US justice system (clerks, ADAs, public defenders, fancy lawyers, other judges, and everyone in between) navigate their everyday life in a busy LA courthouse. Simply put, for any fan of the courtroom drama genre, All Rise is a must watch. It ticks all the boxes which make those shows work. Everyone else should still watch All Rise for its great diverse collection of characters, the talented cast and their phenomenal acting (allow Jessica Camacho in particular to blow you away), and its intelligent writing that’s not afraid to tackle topical and difficult subjects in a nuanced approach.
-1 season, 13 episodes

1. The North Remembers - Created by JJ Abrams, this is a cyberpunk crime drama. People call it I Robot the series but it's still a fun watch all the same. Karl Urban stars as a futuristic cop in this short lived sci-fi series. Set in the year 2048, where, to combat the rising crime rate, the LAPD has made it mandatory to have robotic officers to pick up the slack. Detective John Kennex is a wounded ex-cop called back to duty after over a year in a coma. Prior to his hospitalization, John and his partner were left to die after a robot officer deemed it illogical to save them. John, as a result, develops a hatred for machines and refuses to work with them until he is assigned Dorian (Michael Ealy), an older model, synthetic android who is capable of feeling human emotions and empathy. The two struggle to get along as partners, trying to understand one another as John readjusts to being back on the force. It was sadly canceled after one season due to low ratings and high production costs, leaving many stories unanswered but it's still a very fun sci-fi show with a cast of accomplished actors.
- 1 season, 10 episodes

1. K.D. Lofink - The writing is top notch. This show has it all- action, comedy and real moments of feeling. Even more than the writing, the actors (Christian Kane, Samantha Richelle and Art Acuna) do a fantastic job of bringing everything to life. Their on-screen chemistry is amazing! The location of the Philippines adds to the whole, particularly because the directors made a good choice in not just showing the pretty parts of the country. Overall, it’s very bingeable and would be well worth a second season.

2. Mary E. Brewer - Almost Paradise is the show for me! It has intriguing storylines, action, and drama all rolled into one. You don't have to sit through the sexual content so many shows have nowadays. Yes, there is violence, but it is brought on by the baddies. This show has lots of heart and Christian Kane brings his A-game into the role of Alex Walker, a former DEA Agent with health problems who goes to the island to try to find paradise but what he finds is Almost Paradise!

3. Roz - This was the best series I have ever seen! The lead is an actor named Christian Kane, who is not only good looking but he is also an actor who has it all! He sings, writes music and his range of emotions and change of character in seconds really makes the show! He also does all his own stunt work! I had never seen any of his work before and after the first episode, I was hooked! If you want drama, comedy, sarcasm, and emotion all wrapped up into one, please check this show out. You will not be disappointed!
-2 seasons, 16 episodes

1. LauraLoo - American Vandal was the perfect answer to the question, "Can TV shows about high school ever be depicted accurately?" One part True Crime mockumentary, one part high school-centered dramedy anthology, the show has two innovative seasons. Both seasons star Tyler Alvarez and Griffin Gluck as our main characters, Peter and Sam, desperate to showcase the truth regarding two crimes that have taken place. One involves penises being spray-painted onto cars and one involves a laxative being mixed into the cafeteria's lemonade. The programme attempts to challenge the viewer's preconceived notions, stereotypes, beliefs, and biases held towards the other people attending the same school as them. The stoner who is flunking his classes - does he have a heart of gold underneath? The loser, desperate to befriend anyone they can - do they have an insidious side? The preppy, rich girl - is she carrying the burden of trauma? The show also, cleverly and masterfully, leaves its big questions ambiguously answered. Who drew the dicks? Who is the Turd Burglar? The best question the show answers is why should we care? Its directing style is perfect, and its dialogue is slick and witty. American Vandal's biggest unanswered question of all: how could Netflix cancel something this incredibly made?
As the show goes on, Jason learns of his connection to Atlantis and of his destiny. He must liberate the city from its corrupt tyrannical rulers, the figurehead king Minos and the cunning duplicitous queen Pasiphae, all while Jason struggles to find his place in this new world as he encounters the creatures and heroes of legend. General opinion: If you asked me to describe my opinion of season 3 of 13 Reasons Why in one word, that word would be “Meh”. It’s not that I hated it, but I sure as hell didn’t love it either and there were quite a few things I had issues with. As you will soon find out. At first, I liked the direction the show had taken. I liked the mystery aspect but after a few episodes I got tired of the writers constantly repeating the “new suspect, turns out they didn’t do it” routine. Maybe if the season had been shorter, like 10 or 8 episodes instead of 13, it would’ve worked better? And personally, I’m also not a fan of “falsely accused” storylines. Which is on me, I know. But we all knew Clay didn’t do it, right? And the police’s blind focus on him bothered me a lot, especially since they seemed to be doing it mostly because Bryce’s mother pointed them in Clay’s direction. Below you won’t find every aspect of this season (that would be insane because there was a lot of stuff happening) but only the ones I most want to talk about. Those of you who have read other reviews by me know that this is how I operate. So enjoy.

Harsh but necessary: I’m gonna start with something I haven’t seen a lot of people talking, probably because it was only really featured in one episode and it happened pretty early in the season. But while everything Chloe went through was horrible, I think it’s important to shine a spotlight on just how awful it is to get an abortion in America. Now, I’m not going to pretend to know what the procedure is like in my country but since religion is not such a huge factor … well, everything, I’m going to assume it’s not quite as bad as we saw on the show. Until just recently, I had never even heard of these false abortion clinics. How messed up do you have to be to run a place like that? This whole ordeal is already painful enough without other people shaming the women that go through this. And do you really think having a baby out of guilt is a great idea? Yeah, I’m sure that kid will have a great life. I’m glad Chloe didn’t have to do this alone. No one should have to go through all of that by themselves.

Let him be happy, you monsters: Zach really can’t catch a break. We didn’t see all that much of him this season (which was a shame, to be honest) but things sure took a turn for the worse for him. Zach is one of the reasons I’m so not on board with Bryce’s redemption arc. What he did to Zach this season was horrible. All Zach did was be a good friend to Chloe and he got his future wrecked because of it. As was pointed out earlier in the season, a lot of guys rely on sports to get them into good colleges or universities. It’s their ticket to a higher education and better jobs, without having to put yourself in debt (great system you’ve got there). With Zach unable to play the possibility of a scholarship vanishes. So I totally understood when Zach beat the crap out of Byrce. I even cheered him on. And he felt so guilty thinking he’d killed him and that Clay would take the fall that he actually went to the police and confessed, which is more than can be said from some other people. Since season 4 will be the final season, can this guy please get some happiness in his life?

I did a complete 180: So, at the beginning of the season, I was of the same opinion as Zach. I kept wondering why everyone was protecting Tyler when he nearly killed a bunch of people. Because, let’s face it, the only reason he didn’t was that Clay talked him out of it. And I still don’t quite get the reasoning for everyone wanting to help, we knew what had happened to Tyler but they didn’t. And he needed serious help, more than they could’ve given him. I’m not sure they really thought their plan through, honestly, but by some miracle it actually worked. And by the end of the season, I was genuinely concerned that Tyler would end up in jail. I’m not saying I didn’t acknowledge the trauma that he’d been through in the beginning. He went through something horrible, but that still does not make it okay to (try to) shoot up a dance. We saw this season just how many people had faced sexual assault. None of them attempted mass murder because of it. Don’t get me wrong, I would’ve been totally okay if it had just been the people responsible that he wanted to shoot. But not a room full of innocent people. But like I said, by the end of the season I found myself caring about what happened to him. I was so proud of him for picking himself up again that I sort of forgot what transpired at the end of last season. But now that the guns have been found… I guess we’re about to face it again.

So proud of you: One of the highlights for me this season was Jessica. I love how much she’s grown over the duration of the show and how strong and outspoken she’s gotten. But she also knew her limits. She saw that here group was headed in the wrong direction and spoke up about it. By handling things a different way, while still standing up to the administration (which was very necessary) she got much better results than when they let their anger take control. I’m still not quite convinced her relationship with Justin is all that healthy, and maybe it would be better if the two called it quits, but at the end of the day, it’s her decision. And Justin’s not a bad guy, he’s just made a lot of mistakes.

Hot mess: Someone else who’s made quite a few mistakes, a lot of them this season, is Alex. He’s kind of turned into a loose cannon. Between the steroids and what happened to Bryce, he’s headed down a dangerous path. Did the steroids play a part in what happened with Bryce? Maybe, they sure didn’t help his anger. And I don’t really blame him for losing it and pushing Bryce into the water. But it bothered me a lot more that he was going to let Clay take the fall for it. Even if he thought they wouldn’t end up charging Clay, with his dad on the police force he had to have known that there was a real possibility. At a certain point, you have to face the consequences of your actions. How can you say that Bryce and Monty should’ve been punished and then frame someone else for what you’ve done? My opinion of Alex became a lot lower this season.

Favorite relationship: Remember when Justin and Clay hated each other? How was that only 2 seasons ago? Now they’re brothers who would die for each other and I absolutely love it. In fact, their relationship was one of my favorite aspects of this season. Despite the many drug-related mistakes that Justin made this season, Clay never gave up on him. They leaned on each other a lot and I don’t think either would have made it through this season without the support of the other. More of this next season, please.

Who are you again? Alright, so we met quite a few new people this season but none were featured as heavily as Ani. In fact, Ani got even more screen time than some of the characters we already know and love. I’m not sure that having a new character narrate the season was the best idea. For one, I found her to be a very unreliable narrator. Of course, this was later revealed to be because she was giving the cops an adjusted version of the facts, but this made me seriously question whose side she was on. I did not trust her all throughout the season, especially not after she started sleeping with Bryce (for which I seriously question her intelligence). And her plan to blame everything on Monty… I’m still not on board with it.

I’m so conflicted: Which of course brings me to Monty himself. I want to hate this guy so badly for what he did last season. And yeah, he’s an asshole. But in the end, I just pitied him. He was so deep in the closet, so terrified of who he was that he just lashed out at everyone. And his life was filled with bad influences. First his dad, then Bryce, both had way too much power over him. Did he deserve to go to jail? Yes, absolutely. Did he deserve to die and then get blamed for a murder he didn’t commit? No. It’s pretty easy to blame the dead guy who can no longer say anything in his own defense. And maybe I have a bit of a double standard going on here. Feeling bad for Monty while saying that Bryce deserved what he got but they were not the same. Monty was in pain and needed professional help to deal with all the internalized hatred that he felt. Bryce, on the other hand, was had everything handed to him and felt entitled to the world.

Yeah, nope! Which brings me here, my biggest issue with this season was Bryce’s redemption story. Sure, mommy and daddy didn’t give him enough hugs as a kid. And with a dad (and grandfather) like that, it’s easy to feel like you’re owed something. But at a certain point, you have to take responsibility for your own actions. And I still don’t believe that Bryce did that. He only started to feel bad about his actions after everyone started dropping him for what he’d done. And I’m still not sure he actually felt bad. At certain points, it seemed like getting forgiveness was more important to him than respecting his victims’ boundaries. If he was truly sorry he would’ve stayed the hell away from Jessica and Hannah’s mom. He would’ve never even considered going back to that school, forcing Jessica to come face to face with her rapist every single day. He taunted Clay with his relationship with Ani. The day he died, he shattered Zach’s chance of a scholarship all because he felt like Chloe still somehow belonged to him. Hell, minutes before he died he ranted about how he was going to destroy Zach. Yeah, he seemed really redeemed.

Season 4: So it’s already been announced that season 4 will be the final season. Probably for the best since I still feel that this show should’ve never gone past 1 season. So I guess next season will be all about those guns that were found. Tyler, Clay, and Tony will have a lot of explaining to do. And then there’s the guy Monty was seeing. I have a feeling he won’t let this go, as he shouldn’t. I truly hope Alex fesses up next season. His dad already knows he had something to do with it, but he’ll probably try to protect his son. I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

Best quotes:
Clay: “That’s not decorating, that’s putting shit up.” Ani: “I apologize, I should’ve used a more manly verb.”
Clay: “Football and soccer field down there, baseball field out there. Clearly, the nicest parts of the school because athletes are our heroes and deserving of everything they want including the ability to sexually assault girls and never suffer any sort of consequences, because why should they?”
Jessica: “There’s like the insanity of us doing this at all, and then there’s the insanity of “Oh my god, you built a website”.”
Clay: “Do you think I’m a sad, skinny kid?” Ani: “Uhm, I think you are a lean, but right-sized, very handsome, very complicated kid.”
Mr. Porter: “He could’ve gone to an adult.” Alex: “Hannah went to an adult.”
Bryce: “How did we get like this, you and me?” Justin: “You raped my girlfriend.”
Mrs. Baker: “Did you know that this department has put more investigative efforts into solving the murder of a convicted rapist than it ever did for any of his former victims?” Sheriff Daughtry: “I’m sure that is not correct.” Mrs. Baker: “And did you also know that one of those victims had to come down here twice before anyone in this building would even believe her?” Sheriff Daughtry: “I did know that, yes.” Mrs. Baker: “So maybe you can understand why I might have difficulty trusting your operation or any police, in general, these days, sheriff, because I can’t help but wonder if all this added muscle all of a sudden might have something to do with the family that rapist was born into.”
Zach: “Why do you have me up there?” Tyler: “I can take it down if you want?” Zach: “No, it’s a great photo. It actually makes me seem good looking, so....” Tyler: “Holy shit, dude. You know you’re good looking, right?”

Gary Sinise is set for a key series regular role opposite Dylan Minnette in the fourth and final season of Netflix’s YA drama 13 Reasons Why.

Sinise, who is expected to appear in every episode, will play Dr. Robert Ellman, a compassionate, incisive, no-nonsense adolescent and family therapist who works to help Clay Jensen (Minnette) battle anxiety, depression, and grief. Formidable, intense, and deeply humane, Ellman is steadfast in guiding Clay to accept the help he needs so desperately, to come to terms with the trauma in his past, and begin the process of healing.
Justyna: I've only just started the series but it certainly seems interesting. There's a whole new world to discover in the story and so far we've been watching it mostly through the eyes of its two main characters - Vignette and Philo. It's clear that there's a lot of history between the two and their story was abruptly interrupted leaving Vignette convinced that Philo was dead. When we're introduced to her character she's still in mourning (years later), so the pain is most certainly still fresh in her memory. That is why the news that he's alive hits her hard, even more when he tells her that the lie was intentional. I can't help but feel there's more to this reveal than he is saying but for now there doesn't appear to be any reason good enough for Vignette to forgive him. She seems almost ready to hurt him at one point, struggling with all her mixed feelings, before deciding that he's not worth her pain. She even wishes he was truly dead... It's quite an emotional introduction to the relationship between the two and both actors did a great job during the scene. I'm interested to see what's going to happen next. Kudos!
Justyna: This was such an entertaining episode. A brief chance to take a breath before the final battle, it would seem. Between Zeph, Pree and Turin opening the box and Johnny, Dutch and D'avin undercover or trying to get out of their restraints, there were a few fun moments that I could include in the article, but I decided to go with the more heartwarming option - the reunion at the end. The team is finally getting back together and it was nice to see them genuinely happy, even for a short while. Some of the show's best duos got their chance to shine. There's D'avin and Fancy, not willing to admit that they missed each other but still going for the hug. Then we have Dutch and Zeph, happily reunited and already planning to go back for the rest of their friends. Finally there's Johnny and Lucy. The fireworks were a nice touch and the rest of their conversation was both sweet and hilarious. Just a good scene overall. Kudos!
Milo: Stunningly shot and fantastically directed by Anthony Byrne with an utterly brilliant Anna Calvi soundtrack, this show looks wonderful and has never looked better. Cillian Murphy's acting is top notch, and the scene announcing the Billy Boys (like the Peaky Blinders, a real gang) intentions for Tommy Shelby was just terrific. That is how you make a scene a tense one.

POWER, "Murderers", August 25, 2019, Actors: Omari Hardwick, Naturi Naughton, The Scene: Jamie and Tasha talk about Angela's death and its consequences
Naomi: Jamie and Tasha discuss the death of Angela and its consequences for everyone. This scene was short but extremely explosive. In a few short moments, the priorities of each person was easy to see. Jamie continued to put his feelings above all else while Tasha tried to keep some semblance of a life together for their children. When Jamie told Tasha to think about how he feels because he lost the woman he loves, that was the final crushing blow for Tasha. Not only was Angela dead, but the marriage of Jamie and Tasha met its end as well. Fiercely acted and so entertaining!

Laura B: Finally my favorite Jane Austen novel, although unfinished, comes to life on screen in this wild adaption from Andrew Davies. I chose this scene at the ball towards the end of the episode, because of the way it both called back to Emma & Mr. Knightley, but also in some ways juxtaposed it, as Charlotte's analysis seems so spot on despite her lack of experience, making Theo James' wonderfully overdramatic reaction as Sidney, all the less undeserving towards a somewhat overly trusting Charlotte. Although Charlotte should be careful with what she says and shouldn't give her opinion so freely, really if you don't want someone's opinion, then you shouldn't ask!

SUCCESSION, "Hunting", August 25, 2019, Actors: Brian Cox and more
What is a teen drama? A teen drama is classified as a television show with dramatized elements as they pertain to adolescents. Beverly Hills, 90210 popularized the term and became one of the first to air in prime time. It's status is iconic and it has cemented a long-lasting legacy, even spawning a reboot that launched on The CW in 2008. Prior to BH 90210, depictions of teenagers and their lifestyles were left to established stereotypes in situational comedies and sitcoms. Aaron Spelling was one of the first to create a show that actually centered around teen drama in soap operatic fashion.
Post-90210, the genre split into two distinct directions: shows centering around small town life and more realistic depictions of teenagers growing up in middle-class america where wealth is an anomaly and teen dramas where wealth and glamor was a fixture. Dawson's Creek and One Tree Hill occupied the grounded stories while The OC and Gossip Girl followed in 90210's footsteps and took us on a tour through the Upper East Side and Orange County. The OC actually had the unique approach of taking elements from each of these sub-genres. While the show took place in Orange County the audience often saw the rich teenage lifestyle through the eyes of the show's protagonist, Ryan Atwood, a kid from Chino with nary a cent to his name. The OC was considered essential viewing while it aired, critically praised for its sharp writing and musical acuity. After The OC's run was cut short, the showrunners tried their hand at the genre again with Gossip Girl, a show that built its legacy off of the phrase “guilty pleasure.”

Amidst the behemoths there were smaller, yet still notable, shows who now boast large cult followings. My So-Called Life and Freaks and Geeks were critical darlings but failed to find an audience when they debuted. Far more gritty in nature, they strived for more realism than their oft-melodramatic counterparts.

Another popular teen drama worth mentioning is Canadian giant, Degrassi. Degrassi tackled every hot-button topic you could think of its adaptability through the years has allowed it to chug along for over twenty years in different iterations. Not only did the show master the art of telling imperative stories surrounding social issues in a way that was accessible and not preachy, but the show has always had lovable characters and lots of heart that translated well to international audiences. Its longevity can certainly be attributed to its ability to evolve with every generation, adapting relevant and conscientious storylines for every new crop of teens.
Over the past few years we’ve seen a real definitive shift from grounded, realistic teen dramas to genre-heavy or just plain dark teen shows. Pretty Little Liars, Riverdale, 13 Reasons Why, Teen Wolf, while all still dealing with teenage drama like love triangles and things of that nature, also tackle more serious plotlines often involving murder, torture, and sometimes outright horror. Of course, Buffy the Vampire Slayer predates all of them. Whedon took the monster-of-the-week formula established by The X-Files and hybridized it to create a much beloved instant classic. Buffy’s impact has trickled down into almost every modern day sci-fi or horror show on television. It’s effect is far-reaching, even beyond the genre itself. Those musical episodes we all love so much? We probably wouldn’t have gotten them if Buffy hadn’t done it so well first.

The Vampire Diaries is one of the most significant spiritual successors of Buffy. TVD featured a struggling male werewolf, a broody vampire and a bad boy vampire with centuries of history between them, an action girl heroine with a witchy best friend and a morally grey/sometimes evil female counterpart to our main protagonist. Of course, The Vampire Diaries went on to establish a legacy of its own (a second spin-off of the show will premiere this fall) but it is worth discussing its roots and the interesting ways in which television shows build off one another.

I will say I do sometimes miss just a good old-fashioned high school drama, I’m hoping that All American will fill that void for me and maybe open the door for more shows akin to One Tree Hill or Friday Night Lights. It seems like television trends come and go and it’s been a while since the CW picked up this many teen dramas that weren’t in the superhero universe. Which itself, is another interesting take on teenage dramas if you think about it. In recent years films like Easy A, Mean Girls, She's the Man, Freaky Friday, are far and few between but we have seen more diverse and dramatized coming-of-age stories, movies like Moonlight, Lady Bird, and The Florida Project prove how impactful and important these stories can be. We're finally moving in a direction where films are more diverse. It's also worth noting that many coming-of-age stories come from superhero shows and movies now. Caped crusaders are clearly hear to stay if Marvel and DC's box office price tag is any indication. You look at shows like Marvel's Runaways, Freeform's Cloak and Dagger or even the film Spiderman: Homecoming and start to see a pattern take shape.

There is a clear migration within the genre to create more adult-oriented stories and themes and intertwine them with teenage lives. I think this can be a good thing, it can make hard topics more palatable for younger audiences, but there are criticisms to make too. How much darkness do we need to see young people on-screen going through to get a point across? A question I'll be discussing in the next section.

What this Evolution Means for the Future

One way that teen dramas have definitely evolved for the better is in terms of diversity. Most of the older shows were made up of predominantly white casts and centered around wealthy teenagers and lacked positive LGBTQ+ representation (though Dawson's Creek did feature the first on-screen romantic kiss between two men, instances such as that one were rare). Modern teen shows integrate more diverse casts and generally feature teenagers from different backgrounds, ethnicities, and socioeconomic classes, although we still have a long way to go both on screen and particularly behind the scenes as well. Netflix has show’s like On my Block, Degrassi: Next Class, and Everything Sucks, Hulu has East Los High, and the CW has this fall’s upcoming All American and Charmed, both featuring predominantly non-white characters in leading roles. These are small steps in the right direction, as there is still a lot of growth that needs to occur where diversity is concerned (particularly when it comes to directors and writing teams) but it is miles ahead of where teen dramas were in the late 90s/early 2000s.

The OC, Gossip Girl, One Tree Hill, BH 90210, etc., while iconic in their own right, were not accessible or relatable to a vast majority due to the very small pool of teenagers they actually represented. Many teens had a hard time relating to some of the older shows which often only represented a small portion of the population in an unattainable lifestyle. Everyone should be able to see themselves represented positively on television in meaningful storylines and it is my hope that television continues to diversify (on-screen and off) so that we may see a much wider range of stories not only depicted, but also handled with the gravity they should be.

These shows have an obligation to be pragmatic and diligent in the messages they’re sending to younger audiences. 13 Reasons Why drew quite a bit of ire for its glamorization of suicide and its second season featured a shockingly graphic sexual assault scene. I would never say that teen dramas shouldn’t tackle difficult topics but I do think they have an obligation to handle them with more sophistication and grace. There is rarely a reason for rape scenes to be depicted in such explicit and graphic nature, particularly when involving young characters and aimed towards a younger skewing demographic. Alluding to it is just as powerful and sometimes even more impactful. Sexual assault is always a tricky topic to tackle on television and I think it is imperative that teen dramas, in particular, learn the best way to handle it. We live in the era of the #MeToo movement and long overdue scrutinization of our society's rape culture, particularly in Hollywood. Sometimes these scenes can be tactless and at its worse, debasing or used as a troubling audience titillation tactic.

In this era of peak tv there is a drive to be darker, grittier, and edgier. Compare the shows I mentioned in beginning of this article with modern teen shows like Riverdale. There is a clear difference in how these stories are being told. It's great to see teen dramas taking risks and incorporating other genres like fantasy, horror, sci-fi, and the like, however, sometimes it gets exhausting to watch yet another show where the marketing revolves around impending character deaths. Shock value deaths do not necessarily equate to amazing storytelling and are often more indicative of lazy writing. Personally, I blame the effects of shows like The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones (both shows I enjoy but that have changed the game in terms of how character deaths are treated - particularly for major characters), for this current craze of core character deaths where writers seem to think a show is only as good as its most shocking death or twist. As someone who loves YA and teen dramas, I don’t need to see my favorite characters tortured week after week, especially when it is often teenage girls who bear the brunt of the damage. It was writing tactics such as these that created the tired “bury your gays” trope and often culminate in the brutal deaths of non-white characters. Look at The 100 for examples of both. That’s not to say these shows aren’t good or enjoyable, all of them were successful in their own right, but they are indicative of a strange urgency to see which showrunner can devastate and break their fan's hearts the most. Obviously I don't mean that deaths should never occur on television but I do feel as if many of them are done to actually create meaningful storylines or just to create easy, sloppy surprises and "twists."

All I'm saying is when I watched shows like Gossip Girl I wasn't holding my breath every week hoping Blair Waldorf didn't get brutally stabbed by a vampire or murdered by the town's weekly serial killer. A little agony goes a long way.

Of course, none of this means I dislike our current age of teen dramas, some of them are actually some of my all-time favorites and I quite like horror and supernatural television. The genre is evolving and changing to adapt to the zeitgeist as most television trends do. Monitoring these trends is an important aspect of studying the medium. Television is a constantly evolving creature, it’s fascinating to watch it grow. Which direction will teen dramas go in next, will the grounded shows of yesteryear make their comeback? Maybe we’ll go even further into genre-fare into surrealism a la Twin Peaks. Riverdale certainly takes some inspiration from there and has developed into a bonkers, campy, sometimes dream-like show of its own.
This fall we’ve got a full slate of new teen-centered dramas with Charmed, All American, Legacies, and mid-season’s Roswell reboot. Also The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, which promises to be chock full of magical mayhem and horror and possibly one of the darkest teen dramas we’ve seen yet. I know that I, for one, will be watching all of them, eager to see what comes next.
First off, thanks to everyone who helped find pictures for the Cup. I really appreciate it. It allowed me to create the polls early so we could start as soon as the prediction contest deadline ended. You guys rock! Thanks so much! The Character Cup goes by very quickly so don't forget to check SpoilerTV every day so you can vote, look at the prediction standings, and most importantly, participate in the daily discussion. We have a new TV Talk Topic every day and all are encouraged to participate. It's my favorite part of the contest

To ensure that every has a good time, please read the rules below. It is important that everyone be kind and fair to make this the most fun for everyone. Rules will be posted throughout round 1 and then a link will be provided to them. There are also links below to the list of character rankings and official bracket. Once round 1 is over, these will contain stats about the contest as well. The daily TV Talk Topic will be found above the polls each time. With no further ado, I announce this contest, open! Happy voting!

2018 Character Cup Rules:

1. Don't take it seriously! Have fun. Discuss a lot. Play nice.

2. Focus on characters, not people. Talking about what you like and dislike about a character is encouraged. Going after actors or fans is not.

3. The aliens have not landed. There's no conspiracy here. I will do my very best to keep the contest running smoothly, but just like with the original rankings, I do make mistakes. I apologize in advance for any technical difficulties, spelling errors, and general absentmindedness. Let me know and I'll fix it.

4. Comments are life. As you anxiously await the return of your shows, why not distract yourself with a little TV Talk? Each day is a new topic so even if your favorites are out, you can still discuss. While this contest is just a silly piece of internet fluff, the conversation here dives deep, so jump on in.

5. Nuts and Bolts - All polls are active for about 24 hours. The winners advance to the next round. In the case of a tie, both characters go to the next round. New polls should go up every day and polls may sometimes overlap each other. Any questions? Ask away in the comments.

TV Talk Topic:

TV Talk Topic: Who’s Your Final Four?

Normally the first thing we discuss is the characters that almost made it in, but this time I want to tweak that a bit. If you were creating your own TV bracket of the best characters in all of TV history, who would be on it? What would your top 8 be? Who would advance to the Final Four? Can you even pick a #1? What characters never get into the contest, but you think deserve a lot more attention? What would your childhood top 4 look like and how would it compare to now? Would you have an specialty top 4 (antiheroes, sci-fi characters, superheroes, historical drama characters, etc.)?

DAY 7! (Results from yesterday can be found here.)

The rules are as follows:
1. Four episodes go head to head for 24 hours, going live and closing at 12pm ET each day. The episode that emerges as the winner of each poll will go through to the next round.
2. Vote for your favourite episode, and tell us what you voted for.
3. Tell others about the competition! Social media is your best friend in this competition if you want your favourite episode to win.
4. Be respectful. This is a competition, but be friendly. Let's not have any abuse directed at any person, fandom or show, as we've had on occasion in the past.

As we move to the bottom right of the draw, Outlander begins its quest to retain. Remember: Outlander's in action again tomorrow, meaning it's possible the show could face itself in the quarter-finals. But to do that, "Of Lost Things" must first get past Once Upon a Time's series finale, and that will not be easy by any stretch. 13 Reasons Why's second season finale is up next against Westworld's "The Riddle of the Sphinx". In 2016, a door broke Game of Thrones' fans hearts; today, it could be another wooden barrier that does the same because Stranger Things' "The Gate" faces Thrones' "The Spoils of War". Finally, we have what I believe to be the first ever appearance of a Super Bowl lead-out episode in this competition as This Is Us's "Superbowl Sunday" goes for the touchdown against iZombie's fourth season finale. And on a Sunday, too. How lovely.
