Congratulations to This Is Us, which wins the competition at the fifth attempt, having previously only reached as far as the third round (in 2022). Once again I am fascinated by the way this competition panned out, with 29 debutants, and so many of the shows in the final stages being finished ones.
I hope everyone enjoyed the competition!

A few people to thank. Firstly DarkUFO for his continued support throughout the competition. Thanks to CJ for again designing the trophy graphic above. And a continued thanks to Rendy - who I'm not sure frequents the site any longer - for his wonderfully clean and easy to use design of the competition bracket many years ago.

But most importantly, thank you to you, the fans and readers of SpoilerTV. Without you, no one would nominate their shows, no one would vote in the polls, and there would therefore be no competition to run. Your continued involvement keeps things like this going. Whether you voted in every poll or just one, whether your show finished first or 64th, whether you've read the site since 2007 or you've just discovered it through this competition - thank you for being here and being a part of it all.

And if you have only just discovered the site, stick around! We keep you up to date with all the latest news for all of your favourite shows, alongside terrific feature pieces such Performer of the Month, plus our excellent reviewers pen their thoughts across the TV landscape.

Congratulations again to This Is Us. Can it repeat that success next year?

Only time will tell.

For now, it is our champion.

And until next year, namaste...

We started with 64. Today, we have just two. This Is Us and Sons of Anarchy. This Is Us was eliminated in the third round last year, marking its best performance. For Sons of Anarchy, this is already an extraordinary achievement, having featured only in 2014 and 2015, and having never previously won a tie in this competition.

Whatever happens, this has been a fabulous competition for both shows. But only one can take the crown. And remember: the final, and the third-place play-off (Animal Kingdom vs. White Collar), takes place over 48 hours.

1) A pair of shows will go into battle in a poll, where after exactly 48 hours, the leading show will win the battle and will progress into the next round. Each poll will open at 12pm ET on a given day.
2) Vote for your favourite and spread the word with your friends & fans.
3) One vote per person per poll.
4) Comment on what you voted for on in the comments below.
5) Have fun. This is a friendly & competitive competition. Please do not start attacking other fans or fangroups in the comments, because this really isn't what this competition is about.

We're down to the last eight shows!

And my mind has been completely blown by said quarter-finalists. For the first time ever in the competition's history, all eight quarter-finalists are finished shows. Not a single one of them is a current show.

I find this utterly incredible, and totally fascinating. I often worry that this competition, and the others that we run, have the risk of becoming a procession of whatever the hottest show of the month is. But this, combined with the fact that the only previous champion to appear this year was Supernatural (eliminated in round one), it reminds me that there are so many shows out there that are loved by so many people. It's great to see.

Now, into the polls...

We're down to 16 shows remaining! Staggeringly, seven of the eight seeded finished shows are still standing, with only Walker Independence being eliminated so far.

Good to see as many as five of the unseeded shows still going, including the all-unseeded meeting of Turner & Hooch and The Legend of Korra tomorrow. Four of the five are finished shows - I don't have the numbers, but 11 out of 16 feels like an astonishingly high number. Kudos to them! At a glance, I make it four previous years in which a finished show has won. Are we on for another?
In the two-part episode, “The One with the Proposal,” Chandler decides to tell Monica that he never wants to get married, as a way to deter her away from the fact that he is actually about to propose. When her old flame Richard re-appears and lets Monica know that he is prepared to give her everything she wants, including children, Monica is confused and upset because she really does love Chandler, she just wishes he would get it together. Just when Chandler thought that he’d lost Monica forever, he opens the door to her apartment and finds the room covered in candles, with Monica waiting to propose to him. As Monica got down on one knee, she was too caught up in the moment to continue, saying through tears, “there’s a reason why girls don’t do this!” Chandler drops to his knees, takes her hands in his and tells her that she has made him happier than he ever thought he could be, and vows to make her feel the same if she says yes. The scene also had the best laughter through tears moment ever, when Joey, who was waiting on the other side of the door with Phoebe and Rachel yells, “can we come in yet, we’re dying out here!”

David and Patrick, Schitt’s Creek

Who knew that such polar opposites could actually end up being the perfect match? At first, Patrick’s idea to take David on a hike seemed crazy, considering David is far from being the hiking type. However, the entire scene was a perfect testament to their relationship, Patrick pushing David out of his comfort zone and David going along with it (albeit complaining all the way), to make Patrick happy. During the hike, Patrick gets injured and David needs to let go of his hatred for the outdoors and his selfishness, in order to take care of the man he loves. These two balanced each other out, and it was sweet to see David take on Patrick’s role of being the care-giver in order to tend to his ailing boyfriend. Just when we thought the proposal was dead in the water, David romantically carried Patrick in his arms to the picnic spot and insisted they continue with the picnic. David’s genuine, heartfelt reaction when Patrick got down on one knee made the moment perfect and of course he said yes, how could he not?

Jim and Pam, the Office

Jim and Pam had one of the sweetest relationships on television, even if it took her a little longer to admit how she felt about him. Even though there is a huge rain storm, nothing could stop Jim from making the moment happen, and so he proposed to Pam, in the rain, outside a gas station and she happily accepted. When you love someone so much, it doesn’t matter where the moment it happens, it only matters that it does.

Luke and Lorelai, Gilmore Girls

Some of the best proposal scenes in heterosexual relationships have been when the woman proposes to the man, as was the case for Luke and Lorelai. Lorelai was upset because Rory had dropped out of college. Luke immediately steps in, offering suggestions to help and as he is listing off option after ridiculous option, Lorelai realizes how much he loves her and how much she loves him. She interrupts and softly asks him to marry her to which he immediately accepts. She tries to tell him to take a minute to respond but he refuses, he doesn’t need a minute. He knows how he feels. There is no ring, no flashy spectacle, but the amount of love that is apparent between the two in this scene makes their proposal one of the best to date.

Derek and Meredith, Grey’s Anatomy

This could easily be one of the most unique proposals on television, and in real life. Derek decorated an elevator at Seattle Grace Hospital with medical scans and reminders of the important moments during their journey together. If that wasn’t romantic enough, Derek’s heartfelt speech about how wonderful Meredith is, including “you say you’re all dark and twisty, but it’s not a flaw. It’s a strength. It makes you who you are,” was swoon worthy. The other aspect that makes this proposal unique, is that Derek didn’t get down on one knee and he didn’t actually say “will you marry me.” To him, those words weren’t needed. He told her he loved her and wanted to spend the rest of his life with her and he knew she felt the same. Unfortunately, these two were never able to have their happy ending, but their proposal was definitely one for the books.

Brennan and Booth, Bones

As I said, some of the best marriage proposals on television have been when the woman pops the question and for Brennan and Booth, it was important that she was the one that asked. After eight long seasons of Temperance being adamant that marriage was not for her, this moment was everything that viewers, and Booth, had wished for but never thought possible. Temperance admits that she had been stubborn and she knows that marriage would make Booth so happy, which is all she really wants. Her proclamation, “I love you, I want you to be my husband, I want to spend the rest of my life with you,” was so heartfelt and sincere. Watching Temperance break down her walls for the man she loves was what made this proposal so absolutely perfect.

Nick and Jess, The New Girl

This proposal almost didn’t happen, after a hilarious set of misses that nearly had Nick give up and go home. Nick had planned what he thought was the perfect proposal, but soon learned that even the best laid plans can go awry and in this moment, that was totally okay. After chasing their dog into a drive-in movie theatre, Jess catches on to what Nick has been trying to do and just as he’s about to give up, telling her he wanted everything to be perfect, she tells him that this moment is perfect because it’s so them. As he gets down on one knee, their friends who were such a huge part of their lives, were there to witness it and that made the proposal even sweeter. No one ever expected Sheldon to find love, let alone propose to someone, until he met Amy. Amy’s love for Sheldon is so clear. She is the only one that can tolerate his idiosyncrasies and manage his quirks with patience and in fact, it makes her love him more. Their proposal isn’t anything over the top, he shows up at her door and as she opens it, he is on one knee holding the ring. He pops the question before she can even say anything. Amy is absolutely shocked by the gesture. She had begun to accept that the moment may never happen, so of course she emphatically said yes. Their love is unique and special and the proposal was so absolutely fitting for them. Simple yet incredibly romantic.

Kate and Toby, This Is Us

It is not surprising that a proposal on This Is Us would leave viewers in tears, but how could it not with Toby and Kate? They had the most perfectly hilarious relationship and the proposal was just the same. The hilarity being Toby buying $200 worth of mall kiosk sweatshirts to spell out, “will you marry me?” The romantic part was Toby telling super self-conscious Kate that she deserved everything she ever dreamed of, including a big wedding. The icing on the cake for this proposal was that he asked for her father’s permission, even though he was deceased. Toby knew how much Jack meant to Kate, and he knew that this final step would be important in sealing the deal and it certainly was.

Rafael and Jane, Jane the Virgin

Jane and Rafael both wore their hearts on their sleeves, especially when it came to each other. They are the couple that hopeless romantics yearn for, and even though it took a long time for them to find their way to their happy ending, it was absolutely worth every heartache and struggle that came before. Rafael worked hard to change and become the man and father that Jane needed him to be, and he was all in and ready for forever. Knowing how important Jane’s family was to her, his proposal tying into a typical night of playing Loteria with her family, was simple yet perfect. The last card in the game was the ring, and when Jane turns to see Raphael on one knee with a ring in his hands, she bursts into tears and emphatically accepts. The thoughtfulness of the proposal, having every card be a moment in their relationship, was so absolutely perfect. Jane and Raph are one of the most romantic couples in TV history and this scene helped them earn that badge.

Ben and Leslie, Parks and Recreation

This proposal was perhaps the most fitting to who the characters are. Leslie always had to micromanage situations and be in control, almost to the point that she was preventing Ben from proposing to her. Thankfully, Ben was patient with Leslie and finally made the moment happen by planning a surprise trip home to see her on Halloween, getting down on one knee and popping the question. In true Leslie fashion, she interrupted the moment by telling Ben she needed a few minutes to remember every detail of the moment. Of course, Ben patiently waited and when she was ready, he continued and before he could even finish asking, she happily accepted. These two balanced each other out in every way and it was so nice to see them finally get to this moment.

Lucas and Peyton, One Tree Hill

Lucas and Peyton came from two different worlds, but that didn’t stop them from falling head over heels for each other from the moment they met. Despite a rocky road leading them in different directions throughout the course of the show, they always found their way back to one another and their love never faded. Lucas actually proposed to Peyton four times in total. The first time was shortly after graduation, when she told him she wasn’t ready because she escaped to LA because of the bad memories she experienced in Tree Hill. The second was over the phone when he asked her to elope in Vegas. The third proposal took place in the same hotel room that Lucas proposed in the first time, with the intention of re-creating the moment to have a positive ending. Finally in season 6, Lucas takes Peyton to the spot where they spoke to each other for the first time in Tree Hill. Even though they were already engaged, Lucas got down on one knee and presented Peyton with a beautiful ring and her response, “I am so glad you always knew me,” was absolutely perfect. This couple had one of the most epic television love stories of all time, the fact that it took four proposals to get to their happy ending, is a testament to how much they had to overcome to be together.

Helen and Max, New Amsterdam

Despite the disastrous turn that the show took in season 5, Helen and Max will always be one of the most perfect couples in television history. Despite Max being married in season 1, it is clear that he had an immediate connection with Helen, and she was definitely falling hard for the man that was not only her boss, but also her patient. These two were each other’s confidantes and best friends through three seasons. Helen saved Max from Cancer, helped him get through the death of his wife and she saved his life again, after he was exposed during a chemical spill at the hospital. When these two finally professed their love for one another, it was evident that marriage was inevitable. Max had planned a perfect engagement dinner and moonlight walk through New York. The scene of him practicing his proposal in his bathroom mirror was absolutely adorable, and showed just how much he loved Helen and wanted the moment to be perfect. But in another best laid plans go awry moment, Helen is drugged at a karaoke club and is admitted to the hospital. As Max sits by her side at her hospital bed, the two discuss their future and wanting children together. Max is so overwhelmed by his love for her that he decides to propose right there in the ICU, even declaring, “would you make me the happiest man in this whole ICU and marry me?” Helen’s emphatic, repeated “yeses” are the perfect response and it was such a huge “finally” moment for fans of the couple. It is too bad the show runners ruined their happy ending, but that’s a story for another day.

Barney and Robin, How I Met Your Mother

The most amazing thing about this proposal is that self-professed ladies man, Barney, went to great lengths to create the perfect moment for Robin, decking out a beautiful rooftop in rose petals and lights. True to his character, Barney fooled everyone by making them believe that he was proposing to someone else, so when he got down on one knee and proposed to Robin, she was genuinely shocked. He made it clear to her that this was the last play he would ever run, even naming it “the Robin.” At first, she didn’t realize the play was referring to her, chewing him out for putting her through this. When he got down on one knee, she immediately softened and was touched by the lengths he had gone through. They didn’t end up having a happy ending, but the proposal was romantic, fitting and memorable.
Cristina Almeidahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15611742100252361159noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29964715.post-88093544029539324382023-06-29T17:03:00.000+01:002023-06-29T17:03:04.672+01:002023 Character Cup - Winner and Wrap-Up

2023 Character Cup Winner

Rebecca Pearson

This Is Us

64 polls later and we have a winner! Congratulations to This Is Us fans for voting Rebecca Pearson to the top. While not the blowout that was last year’s finale, Rebecca retained the lead throughout and ended with 58% of the vote. With this, Rebecca becomes the 12th winner of the Character Cup, improving on her third place win last year. Way to go, Rebecca fans! To become the winner, Rebecca had to defeat Kamila Khan, Jessica Knight, Dexter Morgan, Jax Teller, Charlie Nicoletti, and Deran Cody. Congratulations to all This Is Us fans!

In second place is Deran Cody in his first time in the Character Cup. Impressive debut! With a second place win, Deran is still eligible to compete next year. Will 2023 be his year? Congratulations to Animal Kingdom fans for a well-played contest. In third place, Charlie Nicoletti barely beat out Olivia Benson, who placed second last year. This is Charlie’s first year in the Cup. Both characters remain eligible to be in the Cup next year, also.

Our breakout character this year was Sister Beatrice from Warrior Nun, who jumped 51 ranks to land in the #9 spot. What a feat! Over in the Favorite TV Dad mini-contest, Monkey Dragon from One Piece reigned supreme with Uncle Iroh from Avatar: The Last Airbender placing second. Marty Deeks from NCIS: LA took third with Danny Tanner from Full House in fourth.

As the winner, Rebecca Pearson joins Jack Shephard from LOST, Dean Winchester and Castiel from Supernatural, Root and Sameen Shaw from Person of Interest, Alex Danvers from Supergirl, Lucifer Morningstar from Lucifer, Temo Lopez from Mi Marido Tiene Más Familia, Lexa from The 100, Malcolm Bright from Prodigal Son, and Scylla Ramshorn from Motherland: Fort Salem in our Hall of Retired Winners. Congratulations to the This Is Us, Animal Kingdom, The Company You Keep, Law & Order: SVU, and all other fandoms who supported their favorites.

Prediction Contest:

By earning a whopping 120 points, Hard is the winner of this year’s prediction contest. Congratulations! You rock! You earn the all-important bragging rights this year. Pavelas (98 points), Clueless (93), and Prpleight (91), round out the top 4. Awesome job predicting all around in a year when former favorites didn’t make it past round 3.

Stay Tuned: Favorite Episode Competition and Favorite Show Contest

The summer fun is not over here at SpoilerTV. We still have 2 contests remaining. Up next is the Favorite Episode Competition, which normally debuts in June preceding the Cup. Nominations for it should open soon. Then we end with our biggest summer contest for Favorite Show. This is our main hiatus event so you don't want to miss it either. Until next year, I officially call this the close of the 2023 Character Cup. Thanks everyone for another successful year!

Thanks!

The Character Cup does not happen without the support of so many people. First and foremost, thanks to Andy for running SpoilerTV and hosting this contest every summer. If you haven’t been to SpoilerTV before the Character Cup, I urge you to stick around and try it out. Not only are hundreds of shows covered but the people who make up the STV community are knowledgeable, thoughtful, passionate, respectful, and eager to discuss. You will not find better, balanced conversation about TV anywhere online. It is my privilege to have been a part of the STV team for 13 years now.

Everyone knows that the TV Talk Topics are my favorite part of the Cup and you didn’t disappoint. I loved talking TV with you this year. I appreciate everyone who shared their thoughts, whether it was every time, just once, or somewhere in between. You are the reason why so many people are drawn to SpoilerTV. A special thanks, also, to everyone who nominated topics. I’m sorry if we didn’t get to yours, but we have a great mix of topics to start us out next year.

Finally, a huge thank you to everyone who participated in any capacity. There is no contest without you. I appreciate your nominating, voting, discussing, mini-contest ideas, TV Talk Topics, spreading the word through social media, and sharing your thoughts. Once again, I had a blast during this contest and I can’t wait to see you next year for the 2024 Character Cup. It's one of my favorite parts of summer and a joy to participate with you.

Until next year, may your favorite shows not be canceled and your favorite characters have amazing storylines. Thanks for being a part of the Character Cup!

And we’re here - the finale! With over 415 unique characters nominated and 64 participants, we’re down to the final 2 competitors for the 2023 Character Cup. Thank you to everyone who has participated in any form - nominating, suggesting TV Talk Topics, predicting, voting, commenting, promoting the contest, etc. I appreciate you all and I hope you have had a good time. Thanks especially to those who suggested TV Talk Topics this year. We had so many awesome suggestions that I actually have most of the first and second round topics chosen for next year!

In the end, it is down to Rebecca Pearson and Deran Cody. To get here, Rebecca had to defeat Kamila Khan, Jessica Knight, Dexter Morgan, Jax Teller, and Charlie Nicoletti (who is in the third place poll today.) Deran had to defeat Wynonna Earp, Bode Donovan, Sam Winchester, Iris West-Allen, and Olivia Benson (who is also in the third place poll today.) In the mini-contest, it will be a battle of animated characters for the first time.

With Rebecca's placement in the finale, it looks like Hard will be the winner of our prediction contest. Second place will be determined by how Rebecca does in the polls today. Either Prono or Pavelas will take second, putting Clueless in third or fourth. Congrats! That’s some awesome predicting!

After the close races and turmoil of round 3, round four was mostly tame with the exception of the Charlie Nicoletti vs Lucy Tara poll. In the end, Charlie was the winner, which should make today’s poll one to watch since Milo Ventimiglia also played Rebecca Pearson’s husband. In the other match, we have Deran Cody vs Olivia Benson. Cody has made an impressive showing for his first trip to the Cup, but he goes against Olivia, who has been in the Cup seven times now and reached second place last year. Is it finally her time to win or will Animal Kingdom take the victory? Both races will be ones to watch and should be good predictors of who will be the ultimate winner this year.

In the prediction contest, Hard has taken the lead with a potential 120 points. Following are Pavlas with a potential 98 points and Clueless with a potential of 93 points. If Rebecca Pearson wins today, these should be the winners of the prediction contest.

Welcome to Round 4! We are down to the Elite Eight. Round 3 saw some mighty characters fall and some very close polls with Jax Teller winning by a mere 4 votes. Every vote counts in these rounds so don’t forget to pass the word about your favorites. When once it seemed like there was a clear forerunner, now that’s not true. It’s anyone’s game.

Today also starts the mini-contest and it is a surprise in every way. I have never heard of the most nominated character or his show. Who knew that out of 8 spots, two of them would be animated? Add in multiple older shows and this mini-contest has just as much variety as the Cup this year.

Over in the prediction contest, my brackets have completely busted. Only Lucy remains of my final 4 picks. Going by potential score, Hard is in the lead with Wishin’, Amber Lacy, and Pavelas right behind. Congrats! If you are just joining the Cup, please take time to read the rules in the link below. Happy voting!

We’re now down to the Sweet Sixteen as we start round 3. Unlike the previous rounds, round 2B did have some close polls, which makes things more exciting. The mini-contest nominations will close momentarily and that competition will begin in the next round. Even if your favorites are out, I urge you to check back for the mini-contest and, of course, the TV Talk Topic.

Over in the prediction contest, our leaderboard has changed. Hard is now in the lead with 48 points, with Pavelas, Nick 49, and me right behind. Congratulations to all! This is the point where my brackets start busting all over, and with Hailey Upton out, that's one fourth gone for me.

If you are just joining the contest, please check out the rules link below. Remember one vote per person per poll. Good luck and happy voting!

With round 1 behind us, we’ve gone from 64 to 32 characters left in the Cup: Rebecca Pearson (second highest votes), Jessica Knight, Dexter Morgan, Marty Deeks, Demetri Alexopoulos, Allie Marjan, Jax Teller, Hailey Upton, Charlie Nicoletti, Ted Lasso, EZ Reyes, Juliet Higgins, Sister Beatrice (highest votes), Samantha Maroun, Nancy Drew, Lucy Tara, Abby Walker, Sheldon Cooper, Soldier Boy, Dwight Scrute, Olivia Benson, Felicity Smoak, Buffy Summers, Cassie Perez, Deran Cody, Bode Donovan, Sam Winchester, Loki, Clark Kent/Superman, Spencer Reid, Elliot Stabler, and Iris West-Allen.

I hope some of your favorites are still in. If not, it’s time to start thinking about the mini-contest. Our theme this year will be TV Dads, so think about those TV dads that inspired you, made you laugh, made you awww, or made you wish you were part of their family. We’re using the term “dad’ loosely so father figures count. Just remember that no character that has a TV show still in the contest at round 3 will be eligible for the mini-contest. Nominations can be found here.

Over in the prediction contest, I am shockingly winning so far but have no fear, this can change rapidly. In second place is Hard and Tylen with 24 points each and then Pao Andrade and Leigh with 23 points. It is still very much anybody’s contest. I will be out of reach for most of the day but if you have any questions put them in the comments section below and I’ll answer as soon as I can. Have a great day and happy voting!

Let’s do this! Welcome everyone to the 2023 Character Cup! This is a special one for me since it is my 10th year running the Cup. To ensure that everybody has a good time, please read the rules below. It is important that everyone be kind and fair to make it the most fun for everyone.

Below is a link to Character Cup posts and a current set of brackets is at the bottom of the post each day. Most importantly, the daily TV Talk Topic will be found above the polls. We have a new TV Talk Topic every day and all are encouraged to participate. It's my favorite part of the contest. I can’t wait to talk TV with you!

The Character Cup goes by very quickly so check SpoilerTV every day to vote, check the prediction standings, and participate in daily discussions. For those with underdog characters, get the word out now because round 1 generally has fewer votes, so it is easier for an upset. With no further ado, I announce the 2023 Character Cup, open! Happy voting!

Earlier Posts
Prediction Contest

Round will end at approximately 1:15 am CST on Tuesday, June 20.

Character Cup Rules:

1. Don't take it too seriously! Have fun. Discuss. Play nice.

2. Cheaters suck! - Only one vote per person per poll please. While we do our best to keep the contest running smoothly, it's up to each person to follow the rules. The Cup is just a fun little piece of internet fluff. It won't get anyone's show renewed or un-cancelled. It has zero effect on ratings, so there is zero reason to cheat. All cheaters do is disrespect themselves, their fandom, their show, the actors, and this community. Just don't.

3. Focus on characters, not people. Talking about what you like and dislike about a character is encouraged. Going after actors or fans is not.

4. The aliens have not landed. There's no conspiracy here. I will do my best to keep the contest running smoothly, but I make mistakes. I apologize in advance for any technical difficulties, spelling errors, and general absentmindedness. Let me know and I'll fix it.

5. Comments are life. As you anxiously await the end of hiatus, why not distract yourself with a little TV Talk? Each day is a new topic so even if your favorites are out, you can still discuss. While the Cup is just a silly little distraction, the conversation here dives deep, so jump on in.

6. Nuts and Bolts - All polls are active for around 24 hours. Winners advance to the next round. In the case of a tie, both characters go to the next round. New polls should go up every day and polls may overlap each other. Any questions? Ask away in the comments.

TV Talk Topic: Missed It By That Much

There are a lot of awesome characters and unfortunately not all of them could get in. Below are the characters who just missed getting into the contest so it seems fair to begin our TV Talk by honoring them.

Note - Inspired by All in the Family getting in (the first Character Cup show to debut before I was born), I’m retitling our regular opening TV Talk Topic “Missed It By That Much.” It’s the catchphrase of Maxwell Smart, the 60’s comedy character from Get Smart. My brother used to love that show!

Characters Who “Missed It By That Much”:
Gary Mendez (A Million Little Things), Maggie Bell (FBI), Crystal Tyler (Heels), Sara Lance (Legends of Tomorrow), Stiles Stilinski (Teen Wolf), John Winchester (The Winchesters), Leo Fitz (Agents of SHIELD), Cordelia Chase (Angel), Will Halstead (Chicago Med), Robin McCall (The Equalizer), Remy Scott (FBI: Most Wanted), Harvey Dent (Gotham Knights), Miranda Bailey (Grey's Anatomy), Jessica Jones (Jessica Jones), Eliot Spencer (Leverage), Dr. Lauren Bloom (New Amsterdam), Dan Fielding (Night Court), Mabel Mora (Only Murders in the Building), Kaz Brekker (Shadow and Bone), Alec Lightwood (Shadowhunters), Roman Roy (Succession), Bellamy Blake (The 100), Amos Burton (The Expanse), Keyleth of the Air Ashari (The Legend of Vox Machina), Negan (The Walking Dead), Dana Scully (The X-Files), and Dale Cooper (Twin Peaks).

Shows That Split the Vote:
Agents of SHIELD, Chicago Med, Doctor Who, FBI, Game of Thrones, Grey’s Anatomy, A Million Little Things, Shadow and Bone, Succession, Teen Wolf, The 100, The Winchesters, and Yellowjackets.

Characters whose shows/actors are represented by another character:
Cordell Walker (Walker), Derek Hale (Teen Wolf), Kate Whistler (NCIS: Hawai’i), Sylvie Brett (Chicago Fire), Kim Burgess (Chicago P.D.), Angela Lopez (The Rookie), Adam Ruzek (Chicago PD), Walter White (Breaking Bad), Kelly Severide (Chicago Fire), Thomas Magnum (Magnum PI), Calian (Walker: Independence), Elle (The Last of Us), Athena Grant (911), TK Strand (911: Lone Star), Beau Alan (Big Sky), Hank Voight (Chicago PD), Johnny Lawrence (Cobra Kai), Gabriela Perez (Fire Country), Nick Torres (NCIS), and Deputy Augustus (Walker: Independence).

With the initial ranking list set, it's time for the 2023 Character Cup prediction contest. For those new to the Character Cup, this is your chance to guess which characters will win each round. I highly urge you to enter because it's a lot of fun and absolutely free. The prediction contest is about who you think will win, NOT who you want to win. However, I have also created a wish list link so you can show who your favorites are in that one. If you have questions about either, please comment below. The prediction contest helps keep the Cup fun even if you don't have any characters in the polls that day.

Below you will find the official brackets and a ranked list of characters that made it into the Cup. This year, Rebecca Pearson had by far the most nominations - more than double any other nominee. Having made it to third place last year, will this be the year that she prevails?

Like last year, we are using Challonge to run the contest. You will have to put in an email address to create your bracket, but no one can see it. Feel free to make up a totally bogus address. The system does send out an e-mail announcing the winners at the end but I will post that info here, too. You have until 11 am CST on Sunday, June18 to complete your predictions. When the prediction phase ends, the Character Cup will begin. Good luck! Enter the contest through the link below:

Prediction Contest Here
Wish List Contest Here

Prediction Rules:

1. Only one prediction bracket per person. If you would like to also do a wish bracket, you can use the other link. (A wish bracket is where you say which characters you would like to win, not who you think will win.) The prediction bracket will be updated every day, but the wish list will only be updated at the end of the contest.
2. When titling your prediction, please use your Disqus or SpoilerTV name. If you do not have either, please use a name instead of something clever to identify yourself. That makes it easier to post who’s winning so far.
3. Your predictions can be edited up until predictions close.
4. All predictions must be finalized by 11 am CST on Sunday, June 18 to be eligible. Once the contest starts, no other predictions will be accepted.
5. The grand prize winner wins…bragging rights. Hey, I'm a teacher; I can't afford cool prizes. Last year, Luana Arturi won. Good luck to all!

Initial Ranking List:

Original Article - 19th October 2017

I often see lots of comments in our ratings threads about year to year decline and people banding about various numbers etc So I thought I'd take a look to see what these numbers actually look like.

For the last 6-7 years we've been keeping detailed ratings stats here at SpoilerTV in our Ratings Database. As a result we can take a look at some trends etc over the past years.

For the purposes of the results/chart below, be aware of the following.

- The Averages here are for the 18-49 Demo only
- The Averages here are for the main TV Season only
- We only include scripted Broadcast Primetime drama/comedies ie no reality/game show stuff/documentaries or other such bullshit.

So the table below for each of the past 6 years shows for each network the average 18-49 demo number for it's shows.

The last column shows how much each network as a percentage has declined form it's 2011/12 average through to last seasons average.

On the chart we've added a trend line

Thoughts/Comments

- As you can see there is a slow/steady decline year on year.
- Last season the ratings dropped from 10% to 20% depending on Network.
- The CW is the network with the smallest % decline
- CBS has the biggest % decline
- Last season was the first season ever that any other network other than the CW fell below 1.00
- We predict this season that all 5 networks will have an average of less that 1.00 for the first time ever.

Pretty depressing stuff if you're a Broadcast Network Executive.
As we approach the final days of 2022, which like last year has been difficult for many people, end of Year TV lists become all the rage, particularly the list of best shows from the past 12 months.

Here at SpoilerTV, we have just over 60+ team members, so rather than asking just one or two people to submit opinions, we compile a collective list from whomever among the team wishes to air their thoughts.

Our team submitted their top ten shows of the year (10 Points for their best, 9 for 2nd, all the way down to 1 point for their 10th best show), and below is the combined top 20.

From a total of 400 shows (up from 334 last year), 177 unique shows were chosen somewhere in a top ten list by at least one team member, giving a real diversity to our list.

This year was the closest we've had for some time, with only 18 points sepearating the Top 5 Shows. The Show with the most votes going to the excellent new AppleTV show Severance, following by another new show, Yellowjackets. Coming in 3rd was the ever popular Stranger Things.

Stranger Things was actually voted for the most times, with 13 reviewers having it in their Top 10.

The show picked the most as their number 1 show was Better Call Saul, with 4 of the staff voting it as their no.1 show of the year.

The highest placed show which was not picked as No.1 by any staff was Abbott Elementary which ended up in 5th place.

It was also nice to see a couple of Broadcast Shows make the Top 20 list. Abbott Elementary, Ghosts, This Is Us and Chicago Fire.

Without further ado, here's our top 20. Let us know in the comments what you think of the list? What shows are you surprised made the Top 20, what ones got omitted?

Dexter is into the third round for the first time since 2010, so it's already been a very successful year for the Showtime series. Reaching the quarter-finals would be a competition-best performance. NCIS is rolling back the years, having last reached this stage in every edition between 2010 and 2012. Not bad since the last of those was its last victory before this year.

The X-Files has progressed from this stage to the quarter-finals three times in four attempts, and having beaten seed Walker and hopeful The Winchesters, today is a decent chance to make it four out of five. Abbott Elementary stands in the way and will be no easy battle, after knocking out Motherland: Fort Salem and Chicago Fire.

Prison Break's only appearance in the third round ended in defeat in 2012. That was to NCIS and the two could be on for another meeting in this half of the draw. The first hurdle is reaching the quarter-finals for the first time, and it'll have to beat Legends of Tomorrow to do so. In 2019, it topped the rankings of shows eliminated at this stage - aka it finished ninth. That's a best placing and so one of these two is guaranteed to set a new best.

This is the most exciting tie of the competition so far. Warrior Nun has breezed past its two opponents, Fire Country and 2020 winner Wynonna Earp, so far, and is a clear favourite to win the entire thing. This Is Us racked up a huge vote tally in the first round and won comfortably in the second too. Victory today would give it a very good chance of becoming champion.

1) A pair of shows will go into battle in a poll, where after exactly 24 hours, the leading show will win the battle and will progress into the next round. Each poll will open at 12pm ET on a given day.

Prison Break earned its first win since 2017 - admmittedly only one appearance between then and now - and will today face the debutant Outer Range.

A run of consecutive first-round defeats has been extinguished by Legends of Tomorrow, making it past Better Call Saul. It's an all-superhero affair today as The Boys, having progressed past The Vampire Diaries and into the second round for the second time, takes it on.

Warrior Nun went winless two years ago but reaches the second round today. It's a potentially punishing clash with Wynonna Earp, our 2020 winner. Remember, though, that this is only the second time the Syfy show has got past the first round, and this is its fifth appearance.

Round two concludes with This Is Us, making a second-straight appearance at this stage. 9-1-1: Lone Star becomes the first of the two shows in the universe to win a tie at a combined fourth attempt across this year and last.
A reminder of the rules:

1) A pair of shows will go into battle in a poll, where after exactly 24 hours, the leading show will win the battle and will progress into the next round. Each poll will open at 12pm ET on a given day.
