Prime Video’s The Wilds will not return for a third season. I hear the cast and crew of the YA survival drama were just told about the decision, which comes almost three months after Season 2 was released May 6.

Eventually, Al-Bustami secured the top spot and built a strong lead that made it impossible for her to be caught again. Her performance in the season finale of NCIS: Hawai'i was poignant and multi-layered. She showcased the fiery fierce NCIS agent and then beautifully contrasted with the love-struck woman struggling to find it in her heart to forgive the woman she never truly stopped loving. She delivered a stunning performance from the start of the episode to the end making this a very deserved win. Yasmine Al-Bustami is SpoilerTV's May Readers' Choice Performer of the Month.

Please join us in the comments and on social media in celebrating winners Sadie Sink and Yasmine Al-Bustami as well as the incredible runner-ups.

A monthly feature in which we're trying to find the most compelling, best acted, written, directed and just generally great, memorable scenes that we've seen in the past month.

9-1-1: LONE STAR, "A Bright and Cloudless Morning", May 16, 2022, Actors: Ronen Rubinstein, Rafael L. Silva, The Scene: TK and Carlos get engaged
Beth: This scene was SO Tarlos! First TK wakes his man up and given their history, Carlos is rightfully startled. But this time there is no fire or any of the other scary things they have faced, it was TK asking him to get married. Also, Carlos calling him Tyler just made me smile. They deserve a bright and sweet ending to the season and I’m overjoyed they got that.

A MILLION LITTLE THINGS, "Just in Case", May 18, 2022, Actor: James Roday Rodriguez
The Scene: The ending
Luana: I did not expect them to do this and I just don't think I can take Gary dying so I really hope he gets through this, that simple line was like a gut punch and the whole montage of them starting the process only made it hurt more.

BARRY, "ben mendelsohn", May 8, 2022, Actors: Bill Hader, Henry Winkler and more
The Scene: Gene goes off on camera
Folie-lex: Gene has been trying to play nice in order to not agitate Barry for the whole of the episode. But when the cameras finally roll (on what been his first on screen gig in years no less) he breaks and goes off script and punches Barry asking him to leave him alone and stop with the intimidation. Henry Winkler plays the switch in Gene to absolute perfection, while Bill Hader's shocked silence adds to the brilliance of the moment.

BOSCH: LEGACY, "Chain of Authenticity", May 13, 2022, Actors: Mimi Rogers, Michael Rose, The Scene: Chandler witnesses the demise of Carl Rogers
Laura B: I'm really enjoying Bosch: Legacy! It contains so much of what made Bosch great, but it also is a bit edgier, more serialized, and just put together better. I chose this scene, because of both the ongoing plot with Honey still wrestling with Carl Rogers, who in Bosch season 7 hired a hitmann to kill her, but even more so, to put this character in more sleuthy role and continuous peril just makes the story so much richer, while going deeper with overall character development!

CHARMED, "Hashing it Out", May 20, 2022, Actors: Melonie Diaz, Sarah Jeffery, Lucy Barrett
The Scene: Kaela breaks down after Dev's death
Marko: Season 4 is a breath of fresh air compared to previous seasons and each episode has a memorable moment for sure. Kaela's grief about losing Dev hit harder than anyone expected. The range of emotions in Lucy Barrett‘s performance was simply breathtaking.

CHICAGO FIRE, "The Magnificent City of Chicago", May 25, 2022, Actors: Jesse Spencer, Taylor Kinney and more, The Scene: Casey saves the wedding
Beth: Matthew Casey shows up and does the most Matthew Casey thing ever, he saves the Stellaride wedding by convincing a boat captain to have the wedding on his boat. It was bittersweet because those Casey moments are what I miss since Jesse Spencer left the show, but it’s what makes Casey so beloved.

DERRY GIRLS, "The Agreement", May 18, 2022, Actors: Saoirse-Monica Jackson and more
The Scene: The voting montage
Folie-lex: While never in the forefront The Troubles have always been a huge part of the show, and what better way for Derry Girls to bow out than to give homage to the Good Friday agreement, as we watch every one of our beloved character cast their vote for the future, to the soundtrack of Erin's last words of hope and of course the Cranberries.

GREY'S ANATOMY, "You Are the Blood", May 26, 2022, Actors: Ellen Pompeo, Sarah Drew, Jesse Williams and more, The Scenes: The montage to the song & Jackson and April kiss
Marko: The Song is one of the most memorable songs from Grey's 17 year old run. Using the song to amplify the emotions, surrounding Jamal's birth and Annie's death. Mer's fight and all the flashbacks. The show once again accelerated by giving and taking hope. And even after 400 episodes Grey's just knows how to deliver an emotional punch you need hours to recover from.
Luana: Japril kiss - I'm cheesy, I know, but I just love and miss them so much, this finale left a lot of open questions and I truly hope something great can rise from the ashes, but for now the jury is still out, and seeing Japril was definitely one of the highlights for me.

HACKS, "Retired", May 26, 2022, Actor: Jean Smart
The Scene: Deborah is upstaged at a State Fair
DJRiter: As if you needed further proof of just how brilliant Jean Smart is at playing Deborah Vance just watch her performance as a desperate Deborah tries out new material on the audience at a middle America State Fair and is upstaged by the live birth of a calf on a full-sized screen behind her.
Justyna: The relationship between John and Cortana might just be my favorite part of the series so far. I was so glad to see Cortana actively going against her objective and choosing John over Halsey. But the scene I wanted to highlight in the article comes near the end of the season, when all hope seems lost and the Spartans are fighting for their lives, while trying to stop the Covenant. When it becomes clear that it's impossible for John to both save his team and retrieve the keystones without activating them, he chooses to sacrifice his life instead, giving Cortana opportunity to fully take over his body and accomplish both tasks. She tries to convince him not to, worried that she might not be able to bring him back later and his mind may be lost forever but he says that he trusts her and takes the fatal hit. Cortana takes over and completes the mission. The action is wonderfully done (as always) and I do love the trust between the two that has been formed. But I certainly can't wait for John's return. He better come back soon, he's my favorite character on the series. Kudos to Pablo Schreiber and the rest of the cast & crew for all their work on the show so far.
Folie-lex: It had been pretty clear that Cortana's loyalty to Halsey was fading the more time she spent with Master Chief. However to see her fully turn on her creator and actively pick John and humanity over the objective of her existence was beautiful.

HEARTSTOPPER, "Boyfriend", April 22, 2022, Actors: Kit Connor, Joe Locke
The Scene: Nick and Charlie at the beach
Luana: This whole show was amazing and made me grin throughout, and maybe cry a little, but one of the most heartwarming scenes was definitely with these two lovebirds on the beach finally being open with each other, I just can't get enough of this show and these characters, and the performances are spectacular as well.

MADE FOR LOVE, "Under Open Sky", May 19, 2022, Actors: Cristin Milioti, Ray Romano
The Scene: Hazel's father dies
Luana: I know this might not be permanent but this moment absolutely broke my heart, I did not expect it to go that way, the very thought of Hazel being robbed of that moment, of him altogether, it was absolutely brutal and both Cristin Milioti and Ray Romano killed it.
Justyna: The relationship between Marc and Steven, and Oscar Isaac's incredible performance are the biggest highlights of the series for me and the best reason why it's my favorite of Disney+ MCU shows so far. While there's a number of great things about "Moon Knight" and its finale, I knew this was going to be my pick for the article the second I saw this scene. After opening up about his past and his pain, Marc is finally at peace at the start of the hour. He can rest for all eternity but chooses to give it all up because he refuses to abandon Steven. Steven was his strength when he was a kid, he saved his life and kept him going during the worst of times. He's a part of him, one worth fighting for, so he returns to the Duat to rescue Grant. Steven appears to be frozen in sand but Marc reaches out for his hand and admits how he truly feels. “You are the only real superpower I ever had.” And just as Marc freezes alongside Steven, the Gates of Osiris open and the two men wake up and escape the afterlife to awaken in their body. Beautifully acted and written scene. Kudos to cast & crew of the show for all their excellent work.

Laura B: Obi-Wan breaks Leia's fall and uses the Force! I have really enjoyed this mini-series so far. While the first episode was a bit more meditative, this episode picks up the pace, as young Princess Leia proves to be a bit of a handful and where Daiyu sequences are reminiscent to bringing more episodic mission-based elements from the cartoons to life in live action! I chose this scene, however, because of how broken and scared Obi-Wan has been -- so out of touch with the Force, but here being awoken by the forgotten promise of the past, does young Leia begin to revive him and give him a new sense of hope! His abilities may have called attention to him, but he was probably going to need those abilities back anyways!

OUTER RANGE, "The West", May 6, 2022, Actors: Josh Brolin, Imogen Poots
The Scene: Royal discovers Autumn's scar
DarkUFO: Royal checks on Autumn after the buffalo trampled her and discovers that she has a scar on her head in the same place where Amy was hit with the glass shard, revealing that she is actually Amy. Also picked by Laura B

STAR TREK: PICARD, "Farewell", May 5, 2022, Actors: Jeri Ryan and more
The Scene: Seven of Nine takes her place in the captain's chair
DJRiter: One of the most memorable moments of the otherwise disappointing Star Trek: Picard's second season, was watching Jeri Ryan's Seven of Nine, receive her long denied field promotion into the Federation and take her place in the captain's chair of the Stargazer in the show's second season finale.

STATION 19, "Death and the Maiden", May 5, 2022, Actors: Jaina Lee Ortiz and more
The Scene: Andy deals with the aftermath of the attack
Chinagorom: Andy dealing with the aftermath of the attack and her's attacker death was really well balanced with Marina’s pregnancy storyline (however convoluted it is with Jack still in the picture). Jaina Lee Ortiz is a FORCE and has great emotional range which was on display in this and the previous episode 5x15.
Justyna: What an excellent season so far! When it comes to the first four episodes of S4 there was one clear choice for the best scene to include in the article. Despite many memorable moments and performances, it's Max's fight for her life that steals the show for me. Definitely one of the biggest highlights of the series till now. From the moment it becomes clear that Max is Vecna's next target we are on an emotional rollercoaster. While her friends do everything in their power to figure out a way to save her life, Max tries to come to terms with her own impending death. She writes a goodbye letter for each member of her family and friends group, including Billy. She can't bring herself to actually open up to anyone but tries to remain as calm and logical as she can be, considering the circumstances. Running out of time, she decides to visit Billy's grave, in the hope that he can hear her, she gets to apologize, admit her regret and say goodbye. That's when Vecna comes for her, first showing up as Billy, trying to break her down and then showing his true self. Max does her best to run away from him, desperately trying to reach her friends without success just as Steve, Lucas and Dustin try to wake her from a possessed state. Thanks to Nancy and Robin, they manage to give her a chance with her favorite song - "Running up the Hill" by Kate Bush. But the song isn't enough, it's Max who has to physically and mentally find her way out of the nightmare and Vecna's curse. After a series of heartwarming flashbacks set to this wonderful music, she chooses to fight back. Against all odds Max runs away from Vecna and all his traps falling out of the sky to stop her. The visual of her escaping with everything falling apart in the background is mesmerizing. I was on the edge of my seat, actively rooting for Max to run, genuinely worried that she might not make it and so incredibly relieved when she eventually succeeds. Sadie Sink was truly the star of the episode and one of the biggest highlights of the season. I don't think I've realized just how much I've grown to care about Max until this hour. So glad that she made it. Kudos to cast & crew for all their amazing work!
Folie-lex: Max escapes Vecna with Kate Bush's help. The eerie tune of Kate Bush's "Running up the Hill" scoring Max's escape from Vecna was truly brilliant. Even more so because it truly helped by underlining Sadie Sink's amazing performance.
Marko: It was such a powerful moment. Barry confronting Caitlin in all her delusions and desperation elevated the pretty low key episode to new levels. The visual effect of Barry destroying Caitlin's research with the facial expressions of Danielle and Grant made this episode worth it.
DJRiter: Am including this scene, not for how good but for how disturbing it was to me. After finding Caitlin in her apartment and not off with her mother, Barry acts callously and, in my opinion, very out of character by destroying Caitlin’s make-shift lab to prevent Caitlin from continuing her plans to resurrect Frost. For the man who is constantly breaking the timeline and creating chaos his thoughts and actions were extremely unfeeling and thoughtless towards the grieving Caitlin.

THE FLIGHT ATTENDANT, "Brothers & Sisters", May 12, 2022, Actors: Kaley Cuoco, Sharon Stone, The Scene: Cassie and her mom talk in the kitchen
Chinagorom: Cassie’s trip home after her relapse marked the best episode in season 2. Kaley’s portrayal of her is spot on and it was really great seeing her and T.R. Knight because they’ve got great sibling chemistry. The kitchen scene with her mom was a stark reminder to everything Cassie’s already been through but also what she’s unconsciously put people through too. I want Kaley to get ALL the awards.
Folie-lex: After four seasons of tension building, Tim and Lucy finally share their first kiss, admittedly under the most tropey and fanficy context. And yet it still works because Melissa O'Neil and Eric Winter never lose sight of who these characters are and what has been building between them for years. It was a well earned pay off of the chemistry the audience has spotted since day one of this show.
Beth: This moment was a long time coming, and the way it happened was SO Tim and Lucy. I am sure we are going to have a lot more angst to get to where Chenford fans want, but this moment and the look Tim had after was perfection.
Marko: Young Henry confronts his mom. I swiftly fall in love with this show. The characters are so well cast and the chemistry is really blowing up. Seeing a young Henry struggling with his abilities and trying to save his mother was painful to watch as it is, but adding a broken older Theo James lip syncing the speech he tries to give his mother just made me tear up. The scene is so fluid as the actors work their way through it but time just prevents changes and the show lets us know that time can't be changed, it was always supposed to unfold like this. Time is a circle you can‘t escape.
Lisa: Henry is 16. While this is right out of the novel (so I'm told), Henry at 16 having sex with Henry at 16 generated a lot of discussion online. Of course it's what every 16 year old boy who could time travel would do! Of course his dad walks in... but Clare losing it and continuing to tease him about turning gay for himself was also hilarious.
Chinagorom: While this season wasn’t as strong as the first, I do think the last three episodes more than made up for it. I loved Toni’s outburst scene after seeing her best friend Martha catatonic. It was something that the show did a great job of, leading viewers to these two seasons with Martha and love of animals turning into the girl island’s season 1 Dot in a way. The moment Leah goes to console Toni to then blowing the dandelion in her face was pure comedy. She proceeds to round on all the other girls except Shelby (though she sort of gets it after). Erana James is standout in the show and this scene is a definite rewatch.
Marko: Kate arrives in time to say goodbye. The episode itself was an emotional rollercoaster and it perfectly peaked at the end with Kate‘s arrival. The whole 6 season path paid off with this episode and there aren’t proper words to describe how much I‘ve cried during this whole episode. A beautiful goodbye to Rebecca and the show.
Luana: This Is Us has gained a spot in my heart as one of my favorite shows ever, and I couldn't imagine a better way to wrap it up, it was heartwarming and heartbreaking as always, but it also dawned on me that it was the best thing they could highlight, all the life and love Jack and Rebecca managed to bring into the world despite not coming from the most loving families, and though Rebecca got a lot more time with them, Jack's presence was always felt.

Amazon’s The Wilds finally returned this month after an extra-long pandemic-induced hiatus and it was a highly anticipated return. The general consensus about this season seems to be that it wasn’t quite as good as the first season, but that didn’t stop this show from still ranking near the top of this fledgling Lord of the Flies-inspired genre that has emerged over the last decade. For those wondering, the Lord of the Flies novel was originally published way back in 1954 and has since spawned several movie adaptations. Now in the 21st century, its impact is still being felt in the bones of shows like The Wilds, Yellowjackets, The 100, and the list continues to grow. Many of these shows carry it in their DNA, but few have captured its essence quite as eloquently as The Wilds has while still also being entirely original to its own unique plot points. This season saw the introduction of the boys’ side that was teased at the end of the first season. Their introduction, and struggles to thrive as well as the girls, in many ways brought the series closer to the concepts introduced in the novel. This show has set its own path and while it may carry that novel in its DNA, The Wilds is its own unique masterpiece that continues to be something truly special. Read below to see what we thought about the introduction of the new group and our overall feelings about this season.
Did the show, for your viewing experience, succeed in creating compelling character dynamics and stories for the boys? How? And, if not, why?

Aimee: I want to say yes because I think the young men portraying the characters are talented. I also adored the way the story was told in the first season. Yet, the story surrounding the boys’ side seemed to fall flat. Maybe that’s because it wasn’t anything new this time around. We already went through this format last season with the girls and for them, their stories felt better defined and compelling. Don’t get me wrong, the boys had some great moments, but the writers didn’t really do enough to make their stories really stand out. I think it all comes down to the fact that the format wasn’t as fresh and exciting as it was for the girls. If they wanted to do this two sides of the same coin type of storytelling then they should have introduced both sides from the get-go or picked up with the boys’ story in progress instead of backtracking. I feel like the guys most certainly have stories to be told, but the way it was executed didn’t reach that full potential.

Alison: For the most part, the boys’ backstories didn’t produce the same emotional heft as the girls’ stories, which I blame on the season’s time constraints. Each episode was essentially split in fourths, it shortchanged characters and viewers. In fact, Josh (Nicholas Coombe) didn’t really have a backstory, which should give us pause. Did Henry (Aidan Laprete)? The biggest success was Bo (Tanner Ray Rook) and Scotty’s (Reed Shannon) friendship. Two boys physically and demonstratively opposite but with the same damaged core. Bo’s tenderness and Scotty’s wounds, hidden in bravado, was a perfect pairing. Watching them try so hard to escape their circumstances only to keep getting kicked was a gut punch, and I felt every one of their guttural screams as they destroyed the house.

Milo: I do think that it was a poor decision to introduce so many boys just as we were getting to know the girls so well a smaller new cast might have worked – it robbed the momentum for these characters to grow; and instead of switching the script on Lord of the Flies, the series simply became Lord of the Flies, especially with the Jaguar being an ever-present threat in the background. It gave a sense of familiarity in that we’d seen this story not only before in the first season – but tried and tested so many times elsewhere. I will admit that the characters did grow on me over time just like they did in the first season – remember, the pilot, and its flashbacks, in particular, was one of the weakest episodes of the whole show – but I do think The Wilds grew into it even if at the same time it spent much of its second season figuring out the why things were necessary – kind of like Lost, in that regard, to steal from another plane-crash show’s thunder. Now that it has a better sense of purpose and self-identity going into the end of the season – there’s hope for the third yet.

A boy had to be removed from the control group early in the experiment to replicate the girls' experiment experience. Knowing what we do about the boy removed and his history with Nora, was taking him off the board early a missed opportunity? Or a departure from Gretchen's motivations and established character?

Aimee: I get why they felt it had to be done for the terms of the experiment, but I do think it was a huge missed opportunity. They could have done so much by allowing us to really get into the trenches with him on the island to see how he could have disrupted things within the group. Though, I do think he will have a greater part to play as the story progresses through future seasons.

Alison: I thought there would be more for Devon to do once he was extracted from the island. Granted he may be responsible for the FBI investigating his mother, but it doesn’t seem enough to justify his inclusion this season, especially with so little Nora (Helena Howard). Why not have a confrontation between the two? And I wonder if Devon’s as conciliatory as he seems. And Gretchen (Rachel Griffiths) telling him, “We forgive, but we never forget,” was rather ominous. I fear for what his mother will make him do next. Gretchen’s true motivations remain hidden, but she uses people when and how she decides, so I think Devon’s served his purpose during Phase 2. I think his larger purpose and whether he’s playing a game of his own will be revealed during a potential Season 3.

Milo: It’s a great reminder of the constant stakes and danger that the boys face on the island, whilst at the same time a hint that further down the line nothing is predictable here.

Was the boys' devolution too predictable, particularly since the identity of Gretchen's spy was obvious from episode 1 to some viewers? Or, on the other hand, were there surprises in the trajectory of the boys' downfall? Did you have another prime suspect for the spy role? And why?

Aimee: Given the fact the experiment is obviously meant to sway in favor of the girls, their devolution was absolutely not a surprise. In fact, I think Gretchen intentionally selected a group of guys that had much slimmer odds of success than the girls. Maybe that’s part of what made this season less than it could have been because it was obvious going in that they were setting up the boys’ group to not be as successful. There were definitely some surprises and several truly shocking incidents that came out of their group, but they seemed to struggle with finding a good balance in telling the story of the two sides of the experiment.

As for the spy, this is another situation where we went in expecting a spy, which made it less surprising than last time, and they didn’t do as good a job of hiding that person this time around. I can’t express enough, that the big point of weakness for me is that they didn’t really do anything overly grand to separate how they told the boys’ side versus how we had already seen the girls’ side. Not changing things up made this season less surprising in many ways and the spy aspect was chief amongst the topics that just weren’t as exciting the second time around.

Alison: While the spy was unfortunately obvious, although perhaps that was the plan, the reason behind the boys’ devolution was not at all predictable. Seth’s (Alex Fitzalan) violation of Josh was visually violent even though mostly implied. Just completely shocking. I was surprised the show went there. Seth’s actions were the cause for every moment that followed. He contaminated Gretchen’s experiment or perhaps she intentionally contaminated her own experiment. She knew Seth was dangerous. He was no Nora.

Milo: It was – if only as we would have seen it before. But Gretchen’s spy was even more predictable than the first season – but I feel like The Wilds knew that we’d figure it out quickly and did their best not to prolong the revelation as long as Nora’s. It was a fun way to switch the script from Season 1. The Wilds did have to progress the pace rapidly to get the boys to where the girls were and I loved how fast it moved in this approach, even if it sacrificed the character bonding elements of the first season.
Aimee: I think between the seasons we have seen some of the best character evolution come from Fatin (Sophia Ali). That is in large part due to how absurdly gifted Ali is as a performer. She brilliantly knows how to lock into the nuances of the character which has made it a true treat to watch the character grow and evolve. All of the girls showcased a solid level of evolution from when we met them last season, but I think Fatin evolved the most, especially when it came to being compassionate to her fellow survivors. The way she was with both Leah (Sarah Pidgeon) and Shelby (Mia Healey) towards the latter half of episodes really showcased her evolution.

I wish, more than anything that we had seen more of Toni (Erana James) and Shelby’s story. We did get some beautiful moments with them, but overall, their story felt a bit rushed and not as well structured as the last season. It does, however, seem like based off of their reunion and what we saw in the flash-forwards, there may be more forward-moving trajectory for them in what comes next in their story. At least what they gave us was impactful material, especially for Shelby, so they made it all count.

The topic of the plot being split is something I struggle with a bit. I think the story revolving around the girls had enough potential to fill a whole other season easily without the involvement of the boys’ side of the story. On the flip side of that, I do see where continuing on down that path could have led them into LOST territory where to be original things got more confusing and convoluted than necessary. So, if it weren’t for the boys’ side of the story I think we would have spent more time with the girls that we came to adore in the first season. We would have gotten to know them better and seen their stories evolve in a more fluid way than occurred. But, I also do see the benefit of adding in the boys’ side. While they didn’t really do anything original with the guys in terms of the format, their introduction did, at the very least, keep the show from falling into the issues that plagued LOST. I was initially very hesitant in regards to their addition, but they do have a place in the story, even if the writers seemed to struggle with their incorporation at times.

Alison: Fatin and Rachel (Reign Edwards) had the best arcs between the two seasons. They’ve both come so far from who they were at the beginning of Season 1. I wanted more of the other girls’ post-island. Leah, in her unhinged, annoying, and loud way, always suspected there was more going on than a simple plane crash, but Fatin and Shelby were hot on her heels by the end of this season. Giving them more to do would have made sense for the story. Without a divided story, I’m sure the girls would have started to test the boundaries of their faux prison. Also, when is the Rachel-Nora reunion coming?

Milo: More of Helena Howard’s Nora would not have gone amiss – I was so happy when the show revealed that she was alive halfway through its second season – although that is in part due to the excellent performance that she gave in Josephine Decker’s Madeline’s Madeline, which I must shout out here as it’s one of my favorite movies of the year. I reckon we would have seen more of the boys’ storylines applied to the girls’ – like the jaguar, for example – and The Wilds would have invested more time in flashbacks to the past with the girls and different events for them – and the devolution of their characters in contrast to the evolution of some. Maybe it’s just because Yellowjackets – and incidentally, the first season of The Terror, which shared similar themes - is fresh on my mind, but a split of the girls into two groups couldn’t have hurt.
Season 1 established a backstory and background challenges for each of the girls, hurdles that shaped how they reacted or grew in relation to themselves or others on the island. Which arcs for the girls this season successfully built on that foundation?

Aimee: For me, I think three of them really fell into this category, Leah, Fatin, and Shelby. They all started out one way in the first season, but by the end of this season, they had metamorphosized into different women who still resembled whom they were at the start of the series, but who were stronger and more determined. Even Leah and Shelby who both arguably had the hardest time balancing the chaos of the island with their mental health, rallied to come through not only for their fellow survivors but for themselves as well. In Fatin, we saw a girl craving attention initially because of the circumstances she came up in with her family and by the end of the season, we saw a young woman having faith in others and standing by her friends. In these three we saw remarkable character growth despite them having less screen time this round of episodes. All of the characters are well written, but in a cast this big, each season is going to have time where certain characters get to shine and this season belonged to them.

Milo: Leah’s arc was probably the most compelling of the season for me as I’ve mentioned elsewhere in this review – I was in favor of how we peeled back the layers behind the conspiracy at play – but I did enjoy the brief development that characters like Dot (Shannon Berry) and Martha (Jenna Clause) got; with Martha’s taking a particularly dark and tragic turn. Most however can feel short-changed given the wider nature of the focus on the larger ensemble of characters – Fatin especially.

The cast essentially doubled in size from the first season. In such a large ensemble cast, it’s hard to standout. Which of the cast do you think stood out the most and delivered the best performances? What were some of their best moments?

Aimee: This goes back to my prior answer, I think this season Sophia Ali, Mia Healey, and Sarah Pidgeon really shined. But if I had to pick only one of them it’d be a really tight battle between Ali and Pidgeon for the top spot, but Pidgeon just ever so slightly has the edge. She has an unfaltering grasp on Leah’s fragile mental state while also conveying just how fierce this character is. She also isn’t afraid to show Leah’s vulnerability when the story called for it. She stood out in the first season and has continued to be a standout. Leah is the driving force behind the group becoming aware of the experiment and taking a stand and that has given Pidgeon a lot of great material to work with and she has delivered on every tough and intense situation the writers have thrown at her.

Alison: Alex Fitzalan’s performance was the kind of creepy and uncomfortable that made you want to armchair diagnose Seth. The way he pretended to be obsequious and understanding in order to manipulate the other characters made him the clear villain from Episode 1, but since it was a highly watchable performance, like a vulture mutilating a carcass, I didn’t mind. The look on his face as he attempted to drown Henry made you wonder if the Twilight of Adam group were going to be down a member. It was visceral and another moment where performance and camera work upped the tension. And the way he later gaslights Henry, when putting the group back together, made me want to be a believer even though I knew he was a monster.

Milo: I really enjoyed Leah and Raf’s (Zack Calderon) story this season – in part because it felt like it was moving the plot forward the most – but Leah playing games against Gretchen and outsmarting her. There are some real stars in the new camp too – Sarah Pidgeon was superb, and Reign Edwards is ace. I recently watched Snowfall 3x7 and her transformative performance as Melody is still fresh on my mind there – and in a limited role she made sure every scene stood out. I was – out of the new group, also impressed by Zack Calderon. All the cast were well chosen though – and there was no real bad link among them; quite an impressive feat given the doubling of the cast, even if The Wilds lagged a bit at times and could have almost benefited from maybe one more episode.

What was the best surprise in Season 2, whether it was a performance or a plot twist, or design detail?

Aimee: The ending surprised me because it is setting up a Season 3 where everything has changed and yet they are still stuck in this experiment. The two sides are united. The secret of the experiment has been made evident to all involved. Yet they are still being monitored and their knowledge of the situation still hasn’t, and seemingly won’t anytime soon, change their circumstance. Where Season 2 floundered in trying to tell the same story again, this ending sets up a Season 3 that could really upend everything. After a season that felt like a rehash at times of its predecessor, it was a welcome reveal to see that what comes next will seemingly have no chance of repeating the same mistakes.

Alison: Ben Folds. And this answer isn’t even cheeky just truth.

Milo: The biggest surprise after the first few episodes was how quickly the boys ended up growing on me. It was a rocky start – but the script was always kept lively, engaging and the more time I spent with these characters the more time I warmed up to them; showing that The Wilds should not be written off so easily. I’ve mentioned elsewhere in this review that the first few episodes of the first season took a while to find its groove; so, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the second one did too.

What are your final thoughts about this second season? What worked? What didn’t? What, if anything, would you have changed?

Aimee: This season wasn’t as good as the first, the show definitely suffered from the sophomore slump, but for a show that was already operating at such a high level, even while in a slump it still performed well above other shows in this genre. I liked how they worked in the boys’ flashbacks while doing some flashforwards for the girls. As I’ve already made clear, I don’t think they were original enough with the boys’ side of the story to make it feel anything special, and to me, that was a prime thing that pulled down this season. The guys they cast, on the other hand, were great performers, so they at least made the boys’ side an entraining experience to watch. If I could have them change one thing, it’d be in that department; instead of backtracking to show the boys’ early days on the island, I’d like them to have introduced the boys’ side of the story already in progress. I get that in the first season they wanted to reveal the boys’ side as the big surprise cliffhanger, but the series as a whole probably would have been better off had they introduced both sides originally so that the two groups could have juxtaposed from the start instead of this backtrack. Looking at the entire picture, this wasn’t as good as the first season but it was still an incredible round of episodes. It was fun, entertaining, engaging, and jam-packed with exceptional performances. So jam-packed it needed more episodes because they seemed to try to cram too much into an already shorter number of episodes. There were faults, and they did hinder the show from reaching Season 1 levels of perfection, but it is still a show I adore and would recommend everyone watch. I hope that the way this season ended means that the one big issue that hindered the show this season has been put to rest and we can move forward with both groups facing new challenges. I have extremely high expectations for what comes next, so I’m hopeful that the rumors of Amazon having already quietly renewed the show prove true with some official announcement coming soon.

Alison: Our original group is still great to watch. Fatin, a personal favorite, has continued to grow, and I wanted to see more of her post-island. The overall mystery still works. And works well. I’m not sure how many games are being played, but I do know Gretchen needs to watch her back. And even though I don’t really know the boys, some of them are compelling, but some of the others just feel hollow. The reason behind the experiment remains interesting but murky despite an entire Season 1 episode dedicated to Gretchen’s reasoning, the logic of it all just isn’t . . . logical. As for what didn’t work, it’s hard to say Leah, but it’s Leah. Her character is integral, but she is painfully annoying. I think it's the unearned smugness, overall unhinged nature, and drama for days. Since an unexplained coma befalling her character is unlikely, I need a broader character focus next season. What I would have changed is a wasted wish, but I’ll play. I wish the boys were given a parallel season to the girls. I know it’s an unrealistic wish because parting the viewers and the Dawn of Eve group for the length of a season would have slowed some of the show’s momentum. On the other hand, it would have created a stronger attachment between the viewers and the boys. Going into a potential Season 3, the writers need to find a way to level the playing field and make characterization the focus. I want to be surprised and even shocked, but I also need more awe.

Milo: I think The Wilds suffered the sophomore season fate of a show that had such a killer first season premise it didn’t really know where to go next – not helped by the sheer freshness of Yellowjackets–and the road bumps that it faced along the way did sap a bit of momentum from it. But given the binge format and the fast pace there was enough there to mean that I probably would’ve kept watching at the speed I did even if I didn’t have a deadline. I really liked the juxtaposition between the jaguar hunt and the birthday party in episode four, and the camaraderie between the group of both actors was impressive to watch – it’s rare that a cast that large can feel like they have natural chemistry with almost everyone the actors are paired up with – but The Wilds managed to pull it off. I also admire the impressive restraint that the show had in not actively showing the jaguar – borrowing from Jaws in the sense that keeping the monster hidden made it feel like ten times more of a threat – and such a greater accomplishment when they defeated it; even if it marked for the true start of their devolution in turn, it – as Raff said, provided a great excuse to learn more about these characters – I liked how telegraphed the character development was – such as little moments like the girls saying whether they liked their beds made or unmade – in helping you find out more about them as the series progressed.

This season of The Wild’s didn’t reach the same level as the first season, but it was still a wild ride. The cast delivered exceptional performances and reminded us of all the reasons this show become so popular all of its own volition. Even with Amazon investing more publicity dollars on promoting this season, it is still a show that the fans found and the fans propelled into popularity. Whatever comes next, this is a show that is special and we can count on whatever the next season delivers being worthy of our precious viewing time.

Please use the comments to discuss all your favorite parts of the second season of Amazon Prime’s The Wilds.

Sophia, you have such really impressive work. What are some of the most interesting or exciting projects you’re working on now, and where do you see yourself heading from here?

As of right now, I am currently working on The Wilds, which is on Amazon and should begin shooting for season 3 soon, so I’m excited about that. I enjoy my character on the show, Fatin, and watching the direction that she takes as she grows since the character is younger than me.

Set to appear in the sophomore season are Zack Calderon, Aidan Laprete, Nicholas Coombe, Charles Alexander, Miles Gutierrez-Riley, Reed Shannon, Tanner Ray Rook and Alex Fitzalan. They will join returning cast Rachel Griffiths, David Sullivan, Troy Winbush, Sophia Ali, Sarah Pidgeon, Jenna Clause, Erana James, Mia Healey, Helena Howard, Reign Edwards and Shannon Berry.

Calderon will play Rafael Garcia, a quiet, sensitive teenager who lives in Tijuana but attends high school in San Diego. Straddling two worlds has made it difficult to get a clear and certain sense of himself, so he gravitates toward people with stronger, more charismatic personalities than his own.

Laprete will play Henry Tanaka. The opposite of his personable stepbrother Seth, Henry is an emo reclusive type who prefers to retreat into the safety of his noise-canceling headphones and dwell on the darkness in the world. Laprete is a singer-songwriter and music producer who has opened for artists including Jack Johnson, Michael Bolton and toured with Train.

Dora and the Lost City of Gold actor Nicholas Coombe will play Josh Herbert, a talkative, hypochondriacal teenager from a wealthy family in San Diego. Unlike the rest of his athletic, tennis-playing family, Josh is an awkward, nervous type who takes a number of homeopathic supplements to handle his chronic stress.

Alexander will play Kirin O’Conner, a short-tempered lacrosse player who doesn’t have much patience for weakness. Among the castaways, he’s ready and willing to take the lead first, though his hot-headed approach might not appeal to everyone.

Gutierrez-Riley will play Ivan Taylor, an activist and aspiring playwright with an impeccable fashion sense and a razor-sharp wit. But his words can be cutting, sometimes too deeply, which has cost him friends along the way.

Shannon will take on Scotty Simms. Short in stature but big in personality, Scotty’s a fast-talking teenage entrepreneur from the Florida panhandle who dreams of making the Forbes 400 list one day. And by his side always, both in life and on the island, is his best friend Bo.

Rook will portray Scotty’s best friend Bo Leonard. Bo is a soft-spoken, contemplative teenager, also from the Florida panhandle. He has a naively optimistic outlook on life, despite a difficult upbringing, and he’d gladly lie down in the street for his best friend Scotty. His loyalty knows almost no bounds.

Lastly Fitzalan will play Seth Novak, who is naturally funny, Ivy-League smart, and full of charisma. Though he doesn’t necessarily aspire to a leadership role, Seth’s steadiness and sense of humor win him the respect and loyalty of the others, except for his step-brother Henry who clearly has issues with him.
Back in 2016, I created POTM with little expectation of it being as big of a success as it has become. Because of its unexpected popularity over the years, it has required the feature to change and evolve each round. We saw a big change to the winner articles in 2020 when they went from their original article format to a roundtable format. While that format was fun, it was time for a big change to bring the feature to new heights. As such, the 2021 round will see a whole new format for winner recognition, but we’ll get to that in a minute. First read through the 2021 rules and then check out what you can expect for the new winner recognition for all 2021 monthly winners.

PLEASE READ ABOUT ALL OF THE CHANGES BEFORE PROCEEDING TO THE NOMINATION FORM.

Readers’ Choice Performer of the Month

Nominations:

There will be no significant change to this aspect of the feature for the Readers’ side. The nomination round will open up at 6 pm ET on the first day of each month and close at 6 pm ET on the fourth day of each month.

The nominees that make it to the site poll will be entirely fan chosen. Performers can only be nominated for a single episode. That episode number will also factor into which performers make it into the Top 5. If a performer has 100 nominations, but only 25 of those are for the same episode and another performer has 50 nominations but they are all for the same episode then that performer will make it over the other.

Everyone can still make up to 5 nominations for any actor or actress who delivered an outstanding performance in the award month. The form is still the same, so you will have to fill it out separately for each nominee up to five nominees. Fill the form out entirely for each submission or your nominations will not count.

Voting:

The polls will only be open for 2 days. Voting will start at 6 pm ET on the fifth day of every month and close at 6 pm ET on the seventh day.

There is one difference in this section for the 2021 round. After you are done voting there will be an optional form you can fill out. That form will allow you to submit a short description of what you think makes the performer and the performance they won for so special. By filling out that form you do have a chance of having your thoughts shared as a part of the new winner recognition.

Rules:

-A person can only nominate 5 performers per month. Those 5 performers must all be different. Anyone trying to submit the same performer for all 5 of their allowed nominations will have all of their nominations disqualified. The submission form has been completely changed, so please be sure to fill it out correctly. If any spots are not filled in your submission will not count.

-Only 1 episode can be nominated per performer. That episode will help determine which performers make it to the poll. Simply just put the episode number in the form. The contest will be working off the understanding that the episode number is for the current season.

-A performer can only win 1 time per year.

-A show can only be represented by 2 winners per year. For example, if a performer from a show wins in January then another performer from that same show wins in February then no other performer on the show will be eligible again for the rest of the year.

-In the event the same performer wins both the staff and reader voting that particular month will only have 1 winner.

-During voting the results will remain hidden. The results will be revealed in the recognition video.

-Performers on streaming shows that release the full season all at one time are eligible for 2 months, so the month the season releases and the following month. That gives people more opportunity to watch and nominate performers from those shows.

-Performers on streaming shows can’t be nominated for a full season. Nominations must include just a single episode number.

-Voice performers from live-action shows are eligible as long as they had a significant part in the episode they appeared in.

-Voice performers from animated shows are eligible.

-Guest stars are eligible.

-Performers from movies that aired originally and exclusively on a streaming service are eligible for 2 months.

Staff Choice Performer of the Month

Nominations:

This has changed slightly to accommodate the time needed to work on the winner recognition. The nomination period for the Staff side will only run for two days starting on the first and concluding on the second.

Voting:

All the nominees will be entered into a spreadsheet where we will then rank them and the winner will be the one with the largest number of votes. The results will be shared in the results post at the end of the voting round. Voting for Staff will now run from the third to the fourth of each month.

Winner Recognition

This is where the biggest changes will occur. We will no longer be doing dedicated winner articles. Instead, those winner articles will be replaced by a separate video for the Reader and Staff sides. The videos will look at the Top 5 nominees from each side that get the most votes. The winner will then be revealed in the video and get extensively talked about including excerpts from voters regarding why they think the winner deserved the recognition. We will still have a small written announcement to accompany each video, but the primary form of winner recognition will be the videos.

Performer of the Year

Performer of the Year will be handled mostly like past years with the exception that to vote in POTY you will be required to vote using a social media account. The winner will still receive a full-length article. The big difference is that there will also be a video that will discuss the Top 5 that receive the most votes as well as highlight the winners. The POTY winners will be the only ones going forward that will receive a full-length article as part of their winner recognition.

2020 Staff Choice Performer of the Year: Linda Cardellini
2020 Readers' Choice Performer of the Year: Katherine Barrell

December 2020 Winners:
Readers' Choice: Olivia Cheng (Ah Toy) - Warrior
Staff Choice: Pedro Pascal (The Mandalorian/Din Djarin) - The Mandalorian

Please note that a performer can now only win once per year and a show can only be represented by two winners per year. No exceptions will be made for any performer or show, so please use thoughtful consideration when making your nominations. You will have to fill out the submission form for each nominee you submit. You can submit the document up to 5 times, but each entry must be for a different performer or all of your other nominations will be disqualified. The Top 5 most nominated actresses and Top 5 actors will be placed in the poll next week to determine the Readers' Choice Performer of the Month.

After you place your nominations take a moment to use the comments section to discuss your nominees with others. The Staff side played out as expected, with the leader nearly immediately taking the lead and was never dethroned. The Reader side, however, turned out to be far more interesting and surprising. The performer who would ultimately come in as the runner-up was the odds on favorite to win. Then came a single tweet from a fellow nominee acknowledging the poll. At that point, the ultimate winner started a slow march to overtake the leader. The winner would not only overtake the lead but would continue on to secure a strong lead that would earn the win. Make no mistake, just because this winner was an underdog coming in doesn’t make this win any less earned or deserved. This win just goes to show that no performer should ever be counted out. The dedication of fans to support a noteworthy performance can be a powerful force to be reckoned with.
Ah Toy from Warrior can be described in three words: cunning, focused and caring (though she tries to hide that). Her portrayer, Olivia Cheng, artfully brings each of those qualities to life as she guides Ah Toy through one challenge after another. The second season of the show gave Cheng several strong storylines to portray and she handled each one with an incredible amount of skill and grace. Man On The Wall (2x10) was the culmination of a season that was trying yet hopeful for Ah Toy. This episode allowed Cheng to showcase the vulnerability this character was forced into as she dealt with the repercussions of the horrific injuries she sustained in All Enemies, Foreign And Domestic (2x8) while protecting her brothel and Nellie (Miranda Raison). Cheng normally carries Ah Toy with a stiff spine and a twinkle in her eyes. She makes sure that the audience can see Ah Toy calculating her next move every moment she is on screen. This is a character that Cheng always has to keep firm control over and be very calculated in her performance. This episode allowed Cheng to get into the core of who Ah Toy is below her fierce exterior. The character is free to show some of her true self with Ah Sahm (Andrew Koji), but it was the introduction of Nellie this season that really allowed Cheng to dive deeper into her vast skill range to show a whole new emotional dynamic for the character. That was on full display in the season finale and it was the showcase performance that Cheng delivered in this episode that earned her the title of SpoilerTV’s December Readers’ Choice Performer of the Month.

For two seasons now there has been a talented actor behind the mask of The Mandalorian, Pedro Pascal. An actor who through his voice and body language has created an iconic Star Wars character that fans have grown to love and root for, Din Djarin. This stoic single-minded warrior has had one mission for two seasons, protect the young foundling we now know as Grogu, aka baby Yoda and get him back to his people. In the later episodes of Season 2, he demonstrated just how far he would go for his young charge. He leads a rag tag group in search of Moff Gideon who has taken the child for the empire. And in the final episode of Season 2, appropriately entitled The Rescue (2x8), Pascal gives us The Mandalorian at his warrior driven finest, fighting nearly insurmountable odds all for a child that to whom he had become oddly attached. While the action-packed episode, which culminated in on of the most talked-about cameos on television this season, it was not the warrior Mandalorian that touched fans. It was a simple quiet moment at the episode’s end that demonstrated everything the character was and allowed Pascal to show the heart behind the warrior. For a Mandalorian, his helmet was who he was, but Pascal shows the man behind the mask when he removes that revered helmet to say good bye to Grogu with tears in his eyes. For this heart-tugging moment and his skill in creating The Mandalorian, Pedro Pascal was selected the SpoilerTV’s December Staff Choice Performer of the Month.

A monthly feature in which we're trying to find the most compelling, best acted, written, directed and just generally great, memorable scenes that we've seen in the past month on TV.

A MILLION LITTLE THINGS, "The Talk", December 17, 2020, Actors: James Roday Rodriguez, Floriana Lima, The Scene: Gary tries to help Darcy
Luana: I get that this is probably something Gary has to work on, but seeing how much he's always trying to help everyone is just heartwarming, and having these two performers in the same room is always pure gold.

BRIDGERTON, "Art of the Swoon" & "An Affair of Honor", December 25, 2020, Actors: Luke Thompson, Claudia Jessie, Phoebe Dynevor, Ruth Gemmell, The Scenes: Eloise tells Benedict to be bold & Daphne confesses the truth to her mother
Folie-lex: Whilst the lot of the Bridgerton sibling dynamics were amazing across the board there was something special about the bond between Eloise and Benedict. The comfort and comradery these two have with each other was a true highlight of the show, and their talks by the swings made some of the best moments in the season. This, the second time around Eloise voices her frustration with her circumstances a lot more explicitly and tells Benedict to embrace his male privileges. Eloise's openness and continued defense of Lady Whistledown as a way to drive home the point of her own lesser status, makes Benedict question whether or not his sister is indeed the infamous columnist.
Marko: Daphne confesses the truth to her mother. The pressure eventually got to Daphne. After spending a couple of episodes succumbing to the social pressures and struggling to find the balance between her own wishes and what the people around her expect from her, everything unraveled. Phoebe Dynevor portrayed immense strength out of her fragile nature. She found the inner strength to confess her „sins“ to her mother and get some sort of inner absolution.

FOR LIFE, "The Necessity Defense", December 2, 2020, Actors: Nicholas Pinnock, Heather Simms, The Scene: Aaron convinces Alice to take the deal
Luana: This was hard to watch, but seeing Aaron constantly try his best so that no one else has to go through what he went through makes this show something special.

GREY'S ANATOMY, "No Time for Despair", December 17, 2020, Actors: Ellen Pompeo, Chandra Wilson, Kelly McCreary, Greg Germann, The Scenes: Miranda and Maggie talk in the park & Meredith and Tom share a moment
Marko: Miranda and Maggie talk in the park. After struggling through the episode to process the cruel truth that her mother was dying, Miranda was shocked when her delirious mother expressed the wish to live. Maggie was the perfect scene partner for this. In the park, Kelly's Maggie revisited her own mother's passing and how she processed her emotions. The two reminiscent of their lives, their mothers' support, their struggles, and their powers to find a bit of light in the darkness surrounding them. The peacefulness during their conversation while revisiting the brutal facts of their upbringing with their mothers' support, created a powerful vacuum of emotions that just sunk in.
Luana: I'm worried it's the calm before the storm, and I'm not sure I want Tom to be the last person Meredith has a meaningful conversation with, but it was still a pretty great moment.

MAGNUM PI, "Easy Money", December 11, 2020, Actors: Jay Hernandez, Perdita Weeks
The Scene: Higgins gives Magnum his watch
Folie-lex: Feeling guilty that Magnum had to pawn his father's watch in order to replace the Ferrari's tires, seeing how sad it made him and in a show of appreciation for him doing the mature thing, Juliet buys the watch and gifts it back to him. It's yet another one of those sweet tender moments where they both put their guard down and openly show how much they care for one another.

THE EXPANSE, "Gaugamela", December 22, 2020, Actors: Keon Alexander, Dominique Tipper, Steven Strait and more, The Scene: Marco's speech
Justyna: In Star Wars terms, this is definitely when "the empire strikes back". Except here it's Marco Inaros and his Free Navy. At the end of last season Marco's plan to use asteroids to hit Earth takes shape but it's not until "Gaugamela" where we truly see the scale of the destruction. I couldn't quite decide on which scene to highlight from this memorable episode, with one hit coming straight after the other. Amos and Clarissa getting trapped underground, Nancy Gao's plane going down and then the attack on Tycho station where Fred Johnson is killed and the protomolecule is stolen. Not a moment to take a breath. But all of it ultimately leads to this ending speech, where Marco officially claims responsibility for the attacks and declares independence for the Belt. Majority of our main characters watches in silence, with Naomi even breaking down into tears, as the reality for Earth, Mars and the Belt changes following Marco's actions. He's an extremist, but unfortunately he's also a charismatic and strong leader that people choose to listen and to follow. It's scary to even think about what he might be planning next and just how many Belters will decide to join him. What a season so far. Kudos to cast & crew for all the great work.

THE FLIGHT ATTENDANT, "Conspiracy Theories" & "After Dark", December 3 & 10, 2020, Actors: Kaley Cuoco, T. R. Knight, The Scenes: The siblings fight & Cassie calls her brother
Marko: The siblings fight. There is always something special to sibling relationships, when well written. The siblings povs of growing up was completely different and Davey was full of it. As Cassie's downward spiral continued and her behavior was becoming more egotistical it clashed with her brother once more. Kaley and TR found the perfect balance in portraying the relationship as at the same time there was enough closeness and estrangement present. The words that came from them were like shivs leaving scars as both actors dig deep to find the right tone to inflict maximum damage.
Luana: Cassie calls her brother - Cassie was in such denial, and it was touching that she used her one phone call to talk to her brother who's been so hurt, not only by their past but also by her denial.

THE MANDALORIAN, "Chapter 16: The Rescue", December 18, 2020, Actors: Pedro Pascal, Mark Hamill and more, The Scene: Din Djarin and Grogu say goodbye
Justyna: I can't quite recall the last time a scene made me so happy and so sad at the same time. Luke showing up to save the day was the best entrance I've seen in forever. It meant so much to see him like this after all these years. Very glad Mark Hamill got to be a part of this wonderful sequence. The show continues to excel at keeping their biggest surprises well hidden. That rescue would be enough of a highlight to mention, but it's what followed that hit me the most. The closer Luke got to the group, the more I realized it's time to say goodbye. The father-son relationship between Mando and Grogu has been the heart of the show since the beginning. It's hard to imagine them separated. The way Grogu held on to Din Djarin was both heartwarming and heartrending to watch. As viewers we know we can trust Luke to take care of Grogu, but it doesn't make it easier to tear this family of two apart. Prior to this finale I had another scene ready to choose for the article, the first time our Mandalorian takes off his helmet, in the Imperial base, surrounded by the enemies and feeling vulnerable. The fact that he broke his most important rule for a chance to find the Child meant the world. And here, in the last episode of the season, he makes a choice to take off his helmet in front of everyone, just to show his face to his kid, to say goodbye. The expression on Pedro Pascal's face says it all. It's a beautiful, loving moment, but truly heartbreaking as well. Fantastic work by the entire cast & crew of The Mandalorian. Kudos!
DJRiter: The Mandalorian removed his helmet in front of the best kept secret on television guest star Mark Hamill, to say goodbye to the child. Also picked by Zandarl
Laura: The last episode of season two of The Mandalorian was a pretty straightforward action-packed affair, but the final scenes with Luke Skywalker making a grand appearance and Din allowing the Child to touch his exposed face before Luke takes the Child away was one of the greatest pleasures a long time Star Wars fan could have!
Aimee: Shelby tackles the barely conscious Toni to the ground and shoves a life-saving pill down her throat. This scene was a buildup of all the tension that had been consuming these two all season up to this point. They still weren't friends, but this act would put them on a path to being more. Feelings were definitely starting to work their way into the equation for Shelby and losing Toni at that point wasn't a possibility for her. Saving Toni was so important to her that she disregarded all the cries from the others to let them try to give Toni the life-saving pill. This was personal for her, so instead of doing the rational thing and letting something Toni trusted more do it, Shelby instead tackled Toni to the ground and held her nose shut forcing Toni to open her mouth giving Shelby an opening to shove the pill in Toni’s mouth. Shelby’s fear-driven actions and shaky exit from the encounter showed there was so much more to what had happened than just trying to keep the group from losing another member. It was a poignant and memorable scene that started the path forward for the show's strongest and only current official island-based couple. It was great acting by the whole group, but Healey really owned that moment.
Aimee: Nellie makes it through the chaotic streets of Chinatown to be with the badly injured Ah Toy. In an intense and action-packed show, this was just a genuinely tender moment between two women who are fiercely independent survivors that have come to develop a powerful connection. Both of these women would put everything on the line for the people they care about and that is exactly what Nellie did in order to be with Ah Toy. She disregarded all the risks to make her way through dangerous streets to get to the brothel. Even the menacing blockade of Ah Sahm wasn’t enough to stop Nellie when Ah Toy put her hand out for her. The fact that Ah Toy seemed genuinely happy to see Nellie, despite telling her that she shouldn’t have come, indicates just how much Nellie has come to mean to the sword-wielding warrior, they have become a strong partnership. It was also telling of their bond when Nellie refused to leave Ah Toy’s side and indicated that there was nothing in Ah Toy’s past that would drive her away. There are a lot of incredible action sequences and confrontations in this show. The fight sequences are off the charts, but this scene just stood out for its sincerity and calm in the middle of so much chaos. It’s a darn shame this series fell prey to Cinemax permanently halting production on original programming because it had so much story left to tell for all of its characters. With a bit of luck maybe it’ll be granted a TV miracle and will get picked up by another distributor, but if not, at least the fledgling story of Nellie and Ah Toy came to a sweet end.

YOUR HONOR, "Part Three", December 20, 2020, Actors: Carmen Ejogo, Lamar Johnson
The Scene: Lee talks to Kofi about torture
Luana: This show is terrifying, the way they choose to use the perspective to show you every single detail where things could've been different but they had too much against them in every single way. The sense of despair reminds me a little bit of Seven Seconds but the perspective turns it into a whole new thing.
One statement was universal in 2020, it was a surreal year full of catastrophe, heartache, and isolation. There were glimmers of hope throughout these long twelve months that actually felt more like a full decade. Despite the entertainment industry being disrupted, new programming managed to be rolled out to eager consumers desperate for an escape from a reality that even the most eccentric of writers couldn’t have imagined. Many hidden gems emerged to entertain and captivate. As the year finally neared its end, new shows became scarce, but Amazon Prime came through to deliver The Wilds, a surprise and unexpected hit for the streamer. Renewed a week and a day from its release, an extremely fast renewal in the world of online streamers, proved how quickly it had made a place for itself in the crowded world of streaming programs.

Filled with a cast of mostly unknowns The Wilds managed to go mostly unnoticed until its release. After an early drop, the show rapidly gained a social media presence helping to catapult it out of obscurity into something that multitudes of consumers were suddenly clamoring to see. Given its intricate and engaging concept, it quickly became an addictive hit for the streamer. The cast includes Sophia Ali as Fatin Jadmani, Shannon Berry as Dot Campbell, Jenna Clause as Martha Blackburn, Reign Edwards as Rachel Reid, Mia Healey as Shelby Goodkind, Helena Howard as Nora Reid, Erana James as Toni Shalifoe, Sarah Pidgeon as Leah Rilke, David Sullivan as Daniel Faber, Troy Winbush as Dean Young, and Rachel Griffiths as Gretchen Klein. It is a cast filled with newcomers and established performers, but you’d be hard-pressed to determine which was which if you didn’t already know. They all delivered captivating performances that brought each character to life and gave them great dimension.

The Wilds is a show that tests the boundaries of morality and societal hierarchy. How far is someone willing to go to prove a point? How far is someone willing to push outside of their comfort zone to survive? How far will someone go for love? How far is someone willing to go to find the place they belong? These are all questions set forth for the audience to ponder and no clear answers are given. The answer to each question is left up for the individual to answer just as it is for the characters within the series. This show kept viewers guessing and engaged long after the final credits rolled on the cliffhanger season finale.

With so many things left hanging and so many possibilities for what lies ahead the only way to properly dissect this first season is from multiple points of view. How well do you think the show differentiated itself from a show like LOST or a movie like Lord of the Flies? What made the series seem unique to you?

Aimee: It is easy to see why this show was compared to LOST and Lord of the Flies, but I think it definitely carved out its own path. The concept of a group of people with polar opposite personalities stuck on a deserted island forced to work together to survive isn’t new, but the writers managed to use that as a strength. They took a concept where we all thought we knew what was going to happen and managed to deliver one surprise after another. There wasn’t anything really new or groundbreaking within the basic concept, but where they excelled was in world-building and character development. The unique spins they put on tried-and-true story plots ended up helping them to carve out their own little niche. With support from Amazon and continued viewership growth there is every possibility that a future addition to this overarching plot point will one day be compared to The Wilds.

Alison: LOST was never my jam, so I didn’t even consider it as I watched. I’ve only read William Golding’s Lord of the Flies, and I’m not familiar with any screen adaptations. Although, the book did come to mind because of the apparent circumstances - plane crash, the setting - deserted island, and the characters - not adults. The similarities end there for me. Golding explored the destruction of the civilized focusing singularly on boys, claiming to write what he knew, while Gretchen Klein allegedly is out to prove how that removal of the patriarchy leads to a better society, which is a fascinating although not new idea. Her flaw is, of course, that you can’t remove the emotional, physical, and psychological toll of the patriarchy, which Leah explains in Day One (1x1). We all carry pieces of the patriarchy with us no matter where we go. I think this could be the show’s unique twist. Although, I’m not entirely convinced there isn’t something else at work when it comes to Klein. Honestly, my first thought was Discovery Family’s Flight 29 Down (2005), which was very much my jam.

Cecile: While the show did indeed seem to find inspiration in past works, (I’d throw in The Maze Runner in there too, with the different experiments and groups), it still felt quite unique. LOST while very engaging, lost its way in wild myths that never truly came to fruition in most cases. The Maze Runner’s concept was interesting but felt a little wobbly from the start. The Wilds was more simply built, but its narrative felt tighter, and the twists kept me entertained. They mostly felt genuine and not just added for shock value. The fact that everything seemed random at first, but was in fact carefully manipulated, the evolving rapports between the girls as time passed and they faced more challenges, and the flashbacks showing how they came to be who they were, maybe weren’t particularly original compared to other, already established, concepts, but they all worked well, which made you want to see and know more.

Laura: This might be obvious, but the biggest difference between this and LOST that really surprised me was that there’s no supernatural element in The Wilds. Watching the trailers, I almost expected it, so when it was revealed to simply be a company controlling them, I was able to separate the LOST comparisons. Even with Lord of the Flies, which on the opposite side of the spectrum is about a real plane crash and survival based on that alone, and no interference, the comparisons pretty much stop (for me) at it being all girls alone on this island. The Wilds is unique because it takes these comparisons and elevates them. Yes, a plane crash caused all girls to end up alone on this island, but the writing and acting of the show make it much more interesting than any of its predecessors that tried to make the leap of being another LOST.

Gretchen Klein found various ways to insert herself into the lives of the girls. We know for sure that Nora was the other operative within the group. However, there were hints, like with Dot at the end of her episode, that others might know more than they are letting on. Do you think there are any other operatives within the group? Do you think Nora fully understands what she is subjecting the rest of the group to? Or was she also duped by Gretchen? Given that Rachel mentioned something happening to Nora, what do you think happened? Is she still alive? Or did something sinister happen to her?

Aimee: The question of whether there was another operative besides the original two is interesting. They did set it up early on that Dot could be the operative, but that was likely just a clever ploy to make the audience think it was Dot versus Nora. I think if there is another operative in the group that Gretchen would have mentioned them by now. As for Nora, she’s a whole character study in and of herself. I don’t think that Nora is inherently bad. From what we heard her talking about to Gretchen in the diner in the season finale, she just wants to find a place within this big complex world that she can fit into. She was given the opportunity to be part of something bigger and be embedded in a group of her peers that she perhaps felt like she could make her own family unit where she would fit in and belong. With that said, Nora is a brilliant young woman and I think she was fully aware of what she was getting herself into. She is responsible for her own actions and should be held accountable for the trauma she put the group through. I also think there is every likelihood that Gretchen didn’t give her the entire bigger picture and while Nora is a loyal agent, she doesn’t have all the facts. As for Nora’s ultimate fate, I see two potential scenarios. After Rachel lost her hand in the shark attack I can see Nora getting mad at the project as a whole and trying to push back in anger. Despite their differences, Rachel is still her sister, and the general rule is that siblings can mess with each other, but nobody else is allowed to mess with them without consequences. The other potential scenario is that we saw Leah get free from Nora’s trap just as the shark attack happens. The attack on Rachel might have been an elaborate exit strategy by Gretchen’s team to remove Nora from the equation. The rest of the group would think Nora was dead, making it harder for them to perhaps believe Leah’s story, and setting up some tense times within the group. Even in this scenario, I still see Nora being upset over what the program allowed to happen to her sister. I think ultimately that Nora is still alive because she is an integral character to the series and because of how brilliant Helena Howard is in the role.

Alison: Dot’s episode did make clear that she was savvy enough to believe nothing in life is free, but we didn’t see Klein’s answer, so it’s hard to know how much or what exactly Dot knows. I don’t think she’s an operative, but her fear of going into foster care makes her especially susceptible to what Klein is selling. She had suspicious moments, obviously, we believe her versatility with medication, which comes from caring for her father, but the repairing of the Black Box was either a bit of lazy writing or Dot’s been trained to some degree. Even with those suspicions bubbling in my brain, Nora appears to be the last operative on the island. Until Jeanette (Chi Nguyen) died, it's likely Nora believed they were all safe. Even after Jeanette died, there are some moments where Nora still seems to believe the island is a safe space for them. It wasn’t, but Nora believed. She was duped by Gretchen Klein. We watched Gretchen manipulate Nora over pancakes. And strange as it may seem, I couldn’t shake the feeling that Klein was waiting for Nora at the prison. Certainly, it’s far-fetched to believe Klein would know Nora planned to visit her son, Devon, but I wouldn’t put it past her. This woman is very much a Svengali. As far as Nora being dead or alive. She better be alive. That’s all I have to say about that.

Cecile: I’m not sure what Dot’s deal with Gretchen was, since we don’t know what Gretchen asked of her in exchange for this trip. I don’t believe Nora has been warned of the extent of what the group would go through, lest she back out of Gretchen’s plans. She did it to “save” her sister, but the fact that she kept apologizing to Rachel for being the reason they ended up there, took on a whole other meaning once you realize she was in on the whole thing. The end of Rachel’s flashback episode was ambiguous, but it did feel like something might have happened to Nora. Was it the shark attack (that likely caused Rachel her amputation?), or the group turning on her if she survived the shark but not their ire in realizing that she was an operative? I don’t think there are any other operatives, but then again, I didn’t think Nora would be the other one.

Laura: I have a feeling that Dot denied Gretchen’s request, or “offering” and then Nora fell into Gretchen’s lap. I don’t think anyone else is involved. Nora is incredibly smart - it’s the one thing she’s never been shy to put on display about herself - but I think she’s in over her head. You could see it with how often she was reaching out asking for help about Leah. She wanted to help her sister, she wanted to escape the world they were both living in; I don’t think she knew it would be this extreme. We still don’t really know what Gretchen told these girls they’d be doing as operatives. I honestly have no clue whether Nora is alive. She could be alive, and we haven’t seen her because she was an operative, or she could have died in the shark attack we see happen to Rachel, or something else could’ve happened. We’ve no clue how her conflict with Leah ends.

All of the girls that we saw being interviewed seemed changed, especially Shelby. Some of that likely has to do with the trauma they experienced while on the island, but some of it might also be an act. Shelby and Leah both seem hyper-aware of the situation they are in. Do you think the others also caught onto what was going on and were playing the interviewers? Or are Shelby and Leah really in this alone trying to figure out how to save themselves and their friends? Do you think Shelby planned her anaphylactic event to help Leah? What do you think Leah’s next move will be now that she knows about the Twilight of Adam group?

Aimee: We are missing a lot of the pieces of the overall puzzle. We left the group on the island only a mere twenty-three days into a months-long experiment. We have no idea what the last weeks held for the group or the trauma they were put through. What we do know with certainty is that Leah is aware that something sinister is going on. After all, she had a good idea of what Nora was up to even before Nora basically revealed herself after she trapped Leah in the pit. Reading between the lines, Leah clearly tries to open the eyes of the other girls, but perhaps her prior breakdowns, unfortunately, cost her some credibility with them. It does seem that after being held in the bunker, Shelby realized that what Leah had been telling them was ultimately the truth. There is every possibility that the other girls caught on as well and are playing their captors. We also know that Shelby was hyper-aware of her own allergies and actively avoided those substances. Even despite whatever struggles she is dealing with, she is at her core a survivor. I don’t believe she would intentionally subject herself to an anaphylactic event unless she felt certain it would benefit Leah and the group as a whole. The bigger thing is that it seemed organized in a way, so how would the two of them have collaborated unless their fellow castaways were involved? Too many potential scenarios and just not enough answers yet, but that is part of the joy in watching this show. These writers did a brilliant job of setting up the mystery with so many different angles that the best we can do is speculate and they will probably end up doing something so far out in left field that we’ll all be caught off guard right along with the girls. Then there is the new Twilight of Adam group that they slid into the equation at the very end of the season. I’m quite intrigued to see what Leah does ultimately do about that group. I think she’ll try to find a way to communicate with them or to escape and find them. Just knowing they exist is likely going to up the stakes.

Alison: Leah doesn’t seem like the keep it to herself type. If she were able, I imagine once the shark situation was dealt with, she would have blabbed what she knew to the rest of the girls. Although based on Shelby’s note, either Leah was denied the chance to tell the truth or the other girls didn’t believe her. The question I have is how and when Shelby realized that something sinister was happening. I have no doubt Shelby intentionally caused her anaphylactic event, but I’m not sure if it was tied to Leah’s escape or mere coincidence. If she was somehow helping Leah, that means they have an ally. How else would Leah have known when Shelby was going to cause a distraction? Whatever happens next, Leah and Shelby are going to need help to escape and expose Gretchen’s experiments. If Leah’s smart, and I think she is quite clever, she’ll find a way to communicate what she’s discovered to the remaining girls. They need to save themselves before they can save the Twilight of Adam boys. Although, the Twilight of Adam boys may have their own suspicious party and ultimately save themselves. There are so many directions for this story to go. We’ll just have to wait and see what’s next.

Cecile: We don’t know exactly how much time has lapsed between the last scene we see on the island, and the interviews. Rachel’s stump seems pretty much healed by the time we get a glimpse at it, there’s nothing fresh about that wound. The sun and elements damage from the girls’ faces also seem to be fading, so it’s anyone’s guess as to what happened after the shark attack. Did Leah have time to expose Nora? Or did whatever happen to Nora trump anything Leah could’ve said about what was really going on? Somehow, Shelby figures it out too, but we don’t know if she knew all along (another operative, then?) or if something linked to whatever caused her shaved head and hurt ankle angled her towards new answers, or even if she found something during the interviews. Did she eat shellfish? Surely that allergy was in her file, so did she hide another one and create a distraction for Leah? Maybe Leah managed to communicate back to Shelby after that message, but it seems unlikely since Leah seemed to believe the alarm went off because of her. With Leah on the loose but with no access to her peers, it seems unlikely that she’ll be able to let them know before she gets caught. Then again, they can’t keep the girls apart (from each other, and from their families) too much longer, so my bet is that she’ll talk to them then.

Laura: Past Leah, we have no idea what true order these interviews went in. I think it depends on whether Nora is okay after the shark incident. If Leah was able to tell everyone what she knows before they were rescued, maybe other girls caught on. I’m hoping at least Fatin knows something is up. We know Dot knows this is partially not real. I’m truly not sure about the other girls. I think Shelby’s event was planned - I’m assuming she asked for some kind of shellfish or something of the sort for dinner. I’m hoping we see that in Season 2. The problem with Leah finding out about the Twilight of Adam group is that she doesn’t really have a next move. We’ll be lucky if she doesn’t get caught right away assuming they’ll do rounds on all the rooms in the facility since the electricity went out. Hopefully, though, our friend Dean Young will be able to help us in that department.

While all the girls became close and bonded in different ways, the main romantic relationship within the group was between Shelby and Toni, who after a contentious start found themselves falling for each other. However, when given the opportunity to see another of the girls, Shelby chose Leah instead of Toni. Do you think that implies trouble ahead for the fledgling couple? Or was Shelby just keen to get that message to Leah? Since we know both Toni and Shelby survive the island, what would you like to see happen between them next season?

Aimee: As I mentioned previously, we’re missing a lot of the pieces of the puzzle, but we can gather some things from the way the characters were portrayed. Shelby is more disheveled than we last saw her on the island, but Toni is every bit as calm as we last left her on the overlook all those weeks or months prior. Shelby changed Toni, tamed her to a degree. The Toni we saw at the end of the season on the island and the version of her we saw in the bunker were worlds removed from the Toni we initially met. Almost dying and falling for Shelby genuinely changed her. Of all the girls, the most drastic shifts we saw were with Toni and Shelby. Clearly, Shelby goes through some hell between that sweet moment with Toni on the overlook and the bunker. We only got to see the extremely early days of whatever Shelby and Toni may become and there were clearly feelings at play for both parties. Toni proved multiple times that she is willing to be patient with Shelby and go at her pace. I think if their relationship went sideways it was because Shelby is still struggling with reconciling what is in her heart with the world she was raised in. I think that if they aren’t a couple as of the timing of the bunker that when they get free we’ll see them fight their way back to being a couple. They both just had a lot of things they had to work through and I doubt they had time to do it in the weeks they had left on the island after we left them. Being separated and put through new traumatic experiences may be enough to bring them back together. There is also the scenario where they are still together, but each trying to downplay things to protect the other. I can see Shelby denying the opportunity to see Toni as a way to confuse their captors. She also knows that if she helps Leah then there is a better chance that they will all be able to be reunited. Just like every other aspect of this show, there are multiple possible scenarios. One thing is for sure, Mia Healey and Erana James have extraordinary chemistry. They each guided their characters on their Season 1 journeys in a way that made their evolution into a couple feel organic and real. It would be a darn shame if the show doesn’t keep capitalizing on the natural chemistry the actresses bring to their roles.

Alison: I don’t think it spells trouble for Toni and Shelby. I just think escape and survival are at the forefront of Shelby’s mind. Sweet kisses will have to wait. No doubt there is trouble ahead for the couple. They will have to deal with Shelby’s internalized homophobia, which hasn’t been properly addressed. Shelby learned to embrace her true self on the island, but we’ve yet to see if she’s willing to give up her family and possibly friends for Toni’s love. I’m sure the desire to crawl back into the closet will arise. Toni has her own history and her own trauma to confront. If they can weather the storms together then no doubt, they have a chance for happier times, but storms are coming. I hope whatever comes next for them is realistic. I want The Wilds to tackle the difficulties that await them next season. Let’s explore the internalized homophobia, the anger issues, the realities of being a queer girl in this world.

Cecile: We don’t know what, exactly, happened to Shelby but the change between our last glimpse at her on the island, and the person we see in the interviews, is quite stark. Since Leah was the most paranoid (and with good reason) one, Shelby seeking her out to communicate that she knew too, didn’t shock me. Toni would have been the expected, predictable, choice, but by the end of this ordeal, Shelby was anything but predictable. While the Shelby/Toni pairing felt a little rushed compared to how they were around each other for most of the first season (to the point where I wondered if Toni was in love with Martha and in denial about it), I’m still rooting for them to make it. I hope Season 2 brings us more of their relationship. That said, we do learn that Shelby has been diagnosed with dissociative personality disorder, so it’s hard to tell what is real for her, and what’s not. Was everything on that island an act for her?

Laura: I don’t think Shelby wanting to see Leah over Toni meant anything bad for them. I think Shelby just knew Leah was one of the first people to say their circumstances, and the island was off. She knew Leah would know where to go from here. Unfortunately, though Leah is clearly sick, I think Shelby is viewing Leah’s obsessive disorder as a plus for them because Leah will hopefully be able to, or at least try and be able to, get to the bottom of what’s going on. I would love to see Shelby and Toni happy together, with Shelby possibly moved out of her house or at least far away.

The season finale introduced the existence of the Twilight of Adam group. Should the show dive more into that group? Or should they maintain focus on the Dawn of Eve group? Do you think that the Eve girls will try to rescue the Adam guys if they are able to escape the bunker?

Aimee: In theory, I like the idea of a counterpart group to the Eve group, but I think shifting focus to the Adam group would be a grave mistake for the show. I do think it’d be fun for the Eve ladies to meet the Adam guys, but the focus should not shift off of the Eve group. They brought us into this complex world and they should be the ones we follow throughout the run of the series. I would actually love it if the ladies escape the bunker and rescue the Adam guys for the simple fact that you rarely get to see the ladies rescue the guys in a story like this. I’d enjoy meeting the Adam guys in that capacity, but they should in no way become the main focus or take focus away from the Eve group. It would be interesting to see the two groups team up to regain their freedom and takedown Gretchen’s organization, but again, the focus should not shift away from the original Eve group.

Alison: A comparison between the Dawn of Eve group and the Twilight of Adam group would make for an interesting second season, weaving the stories together. Certainly, I hope the conversation about the traumatic nature of the patriarchy continues, but I’d love to see that conversation expand. An exploration of how it damages us all. Use the Twilight of Adam group to provide a view into how civilization has evolved its understanding of gender norms, expressions, and identities. A contrast to Golding’s singular portrayal of civilization as male. I want the show to tackle questions about: How do societies and civilizations develop? Is savagery the opposite of the civilized? Does the removal of the societal structure always mean boys will regress to something primal? There is plenty of ground to cover. Given all the possibilities, The Wilds could offer countless seasons. What I don’t want is for the show to lose sight of the story of these young women. I have so many questions and I don’t want the answers to be condensed for the sake of witnessing the Twilight of Adam.

Cecile: I’d rather see more of the Dawn of Eve group since we’ve followed them from the start and are just barely starting to understand how they came to be there. It would be interesting to see how the Twilight of Adam experience compared, and if the girls can still warn them about what’s really going on.

Laura: The Twilight of Adam twist is interesting, but I really, really want to stick with the girls. This show is about letting girls and women embrace every aspect of who they are, whether they’re happy, sad, angry, confused, or all the above. Adding boys or men into the mix, I think, would take away from what the show is: girls being girls. I do think the Eve girls will try to save the guys though -- we’ve seen that that’s who they are. They won’t just leave you for dead. It would be interesting if they didn’t though. It would be a fun flip on what brought everyone together: how the problems/trouble from men in the girls’ lives brought them together, to now seeing these boys and not having the energy or heart to want to help them.
We got to see small glimpses into the inner workings of Gretchen’s organization, but there is still a lot we don’t really know. What do you think Gretchen’s ultimate objective is with the Dawn of Eve girls and the Twilight of Adam guys? Is it one great big social experiment? Or are there more sinister motives at play? Why were this small select group of girls and their Adam counterparts selected? Was it by chance because their parents and guardians could be manipulated or was there more to their selection?

Aimee: I think that Gretchen and the writers want us to believe this is just a great big elaborate social experiment to see the evolution of a society from the female perspective. Decades of watching television has taught me that if something seems obvious, it likely isn’t what is actually going on. I think this all runs much deeper than a social experiment. I don’t know if Gretchen’s motives are necessarily sinister, she seems a bit unhinged, so this could really just be all about science to her in a twisted way, but the actions she has taken against the girls are cruel. I do believe is that there is no coincidence that these girls and their Adam counterparts were picked for a reason. Are they just a control group? Were the Adam guys eventually meant to incorporate into the Eve group to see how a matriarchal society would truly work? This is yet another topic with more questions than answers at this stage. What that real reason will end up being is still unknown and may not even get answered next season. I believe that the two groups were selected based on some still unknown criteria for unknown reasons and then Gretchen set to work manipulating their guardians. One thing is for sure, neither group are there by accident.

Alison: When this all started, I believe Gretchen wanted to do just as she proclaimed in her slightly unhinged speech. She wanted to prove that men lack the ability to construct sustainable civilizations. She wanted to prove that the patriarchy is a completely destructive and unchecked force that has broken faith with all women, but its day is done. Somewhere along the way, her motives became murky and the execution corrupt. She’s gone from a social experiment to holding and interrogating girls in a secret bunker with limited human contact. However, as her power grows, she’s come to see herself as a godlike figure. Her initial purpose and points have become corrupted. Perhaps the Twilight of Adam control group is comprised of boys damaged by the patriarchy but hiding in its embrace. Boys that have hurt people to keep from being hurt or discovered. Whomever they are, I’m sure their selection was just as intentional as the Dawn of Eve group.

Cecile: The official reason behind Gretchen’s plan never felt fully formed to me, and more like an excuse for something else. The fact that none of it was sanctioned, and that her previous job apparently didn’t end well, doesn’t bode well for the project being done correctly and with a result worth exploiting. Sometimes you must push for breakthroughs even though the world is against you, but this doesn’t feel like that. Each one of the girls seems to have a specific set of issues to exploit, and parents who are out of their depth, so who indeed feel like non-threatening to someone like Gretchen. The box containing Martha’s belongings and the resolution Gretchen’s team comes up with money to appease the family feels particularly bleak. Gretchen’s goal, that whatever happened on the island induce enough guilt in the girls that the families wouldn’t sue once they knew what was really going on, doesn’t feel like Gretchen is acting for the greater good.

Laura: I think Gretchen wants to prove that placing women and men in groups to fend for themselves sometimes won’t end up like a Lord of the Flies situation. She basically said earlier that she thinks women are superior in the group sense, so I think this is her trying to prove it. She placed the girls in a group to see how well they’d fare and placed the boys in another to compare and contrast them because she believes, she thinks, this will prove that women are smarter than men as a whole. I truly don’t know how Gretchen found these people other than Nora and Linh. I think she looked for vulnerable teenagers and even more unavailable parents and went for them because she knew they’d be the first to look for a way out for their child instead of getting them real help.
For a cast that is for the most part filled with newcomers, they delivered powerful compelling performances. What were some of the most standout performances from this first season? Which member of the cast do you think delivered a performance worthy of the title of a breakout performance?

Aimee: This is hard because every member of this cast delivered at such a high caliber. They all delivered many memorable performances. I greatly enjoyed watching both Healey and James bring to life the complex dynamic that eventually became a fledgling romance between Shelby and Toni. It was interesting to watch how each actress handled the path that their characters took to ultimately end up under that lychee tree making love. It was also interesting to see how James showed Toni gradually taming her temper as she found her place within the group especially after they all rallied around her in Day Twelve (1x6) to save her life. James did a good job of showing Toni start to change, especially towards Shelby after Shelby forcibly shoved the life-saving pill down her throat. I found Dot utterly compelling as she came to life under Berry’s skilled guardianship and the scene where Dot lost her father was heart-wrenching. Edwards and Howard were brilliant in how they portrayed the push and pull between the twins. Edwards did an amazing job showing Rachel’s strengths become her weaknesses and her weaknesses become her strengths. Martha was the one character I didn’t connect with quite as much but I think that was because she wasn’t given quite as much meaty material outside of her episode, but Clause was a powerhouse when she was given material to really dive into. Pidgeon was a force to be reckoned with from the start to the finish as Leah came to the forefront to try to solve the mystery of the island and the mystery surrounding their captors. The writers threw a lot of intense stuff her way and she dominated at it all. Griffiths was a surprise for me in how she made the unhinged and complex Gretchen actually feel like a flawed and compelling character. I really hope there ends up being more to Gretchen next season where Griffiths is allowed to dig even deeper into Gretchen’s wild complexities. In the end, despite the talents of this extraordinary cast, I have to give the title of breakout performance to Sophia Ali. I enjoyed every single second that Fatin was on the screen. Whether Fatin was being snobbish like she was early on or delivering heartfelt compassion like she gave to Leah on the beach after the Day Twenty-Two (1x9) rescue, Ali covered such a wide range and she did it flawlessly. This cast doesn’t have a single weak link in terms of skill level, but Ali, for this first season at least, delivered what I felt was the breakout performance of this cast.

Alison: Every cast member had a standout moment.

Seeing Dot with her father almost brought tears to my eyes. Watching her shoulder the burden of keeping him comfortable and fed out of love and not obligation was beautiful. The final scene between Dot and her father was so well done. The way Berry moved the character from a little girl that just wanted to keep her father around for as long as possible to a young woman that put someone else’s pain over her own was moving. Wordlessly her expressions signaled the shift.

Early on Leah became a central figure, but interestingly, I thought her character had the least compelling backstory. The story waited too long to reveal that her relationship may have applied enough pressure to break her, but her obsessive nature wasn’t something new. Truly, she didn’t become interesting until the dramatic irony took hold. Her island mates saw someone cracking at the seams, but the audience knew it was true. I could see the madness and conviction mingle in her eyes and posture. I’ve been there, especially as a kid, knowing something is true and desperately wanting to be believed. It’s a maddening experience.

I could write a paragraph about every other cast member because there wasn’t a bad performance in the bunch. The series was clever in the way it doled out the episode to singular characters. Once Fatin’s episode came up, her apparent shallowness melted away and we saw the layers of this incredibly talented, self-possessed, and unapologetically sexual young woman. Toni’s explosive anger was riveting as well as terrifying. James truly managed to make a character with such polarizing behaviors incredibly sympathetic.

Every performance was excellent. Even when there were story and plot mistakes the acting was brilliant. The breakout performance, for me, was Howard’s portrayal of Nora. It’s the one I’m still thinking about days after finishing the series. She was compelling, believable, heartbreaking, hysterical, and a mystery. The character’s almost crippling social anxiety was clear, but it never alienated her from the audience. It also never made us pity her. From the moment she watched life pass her by, sitting on that bench at school to the last time we saw her, running into the water to save Rachel, I was all in with her character. I need her to be alive.

Cecile: A lot of people find Leah annoying, but her reactions seemed the most realistic to me, and that was greatly due to Sarah Pidgeon’s performance. It’s easy to forget the trauma these girls have been through, both before and during their experience, but Leah’s intensity and despair never wavered. Realistically, I think most of us would react like she did when faced with this kind of situation, which is something that tends to be forgotten. Mia Healey was another standout, the way she brought Shelby’s entire arc to life was particularly well done.

Laura: This cast is absolutely fantastic. Erana James as Toni Shalifoe was one of the best, in my opinion. The background episode about Toni and seeing Toni’s anger in action was something we don’t see a lot of on television and I love seeing it when it happens: enraged women. I’m not saying I’m totally cool and comfortable with Toni’s clear anger issues. We so often must-see women and girls choking back their tears and breathing deeply and sighing, not being allowed to be angry. Then we have this character whose entire flaw is that she’s too hot-headed, too angry, too quick to jump down your throat. And she’s acted to a tee. The breakout performance, though, I think must go to Helena Howard, who plays Nora Reid. Howard only has six credits on IMDb, and yet she brought a level of emotion to this show that I would’ve expected from an extremely seasoned actress. Her acting made me feel so many things for this character I feel like we still don’t even really know yet, especially with these new revelations. Helena Howard was born for this role.
What are your final thoughts about this first season? What are you hoping to see happen in the already announced Season 2?

Aimee: I was completely caught off guard by the brilliance of this first season. I remember seeing the trailer and being cautiously excited about it, but I had low expectations. It was marketed largely as a YA adventure series, but it is so much more than that. Anyone of any age can sit back and enjoy the elaborate mystery that the writers have crafted. I just hope the writers can keep that magic moving forward into Season 2. There is every possibility we will end up seeing more of the present-day bunker story versus the island story. I suspect we’ll see the Adam guys involved a bit more in the story, but I hope not an overwhelming amount. They are part of the fabric of the series, but they should not be given the main focus. I don’t know if we’ll see as many pre-island flashbacks next season, but I expect they’ll still be sprinkled in a bit. I want to know what happened to Nora and Martha. I want to see the girls we know are in the bunker escape and band together to try to take down Gretchen, though I’m not so sure that we know the full picture about Gretchen just yet either. All I know for sure at this point is that I’m extremely excited for Season 2 and whatever the writers give us, I think next season has the potential to be as good as this first season if not better.

Alison: The first season of The Wilds wasn’t without its flaws, but it was an entertaining adventure that also proved to be an intellectual exercise. The incredible cast effortlessly brought all the drama, angst, humor, and heartbreak to life. The show managed an inclusive cast without making it feel like they were checking boxes on some list. A big kudos to the writers for a well-balanced story and dialogue that rang true. Nora’s fate is my number one priority. I’ve said it before, but I need her to survive the shark attack. Now that Leah’s grown on me, I’m looking forward to her assembling the gang and doing a deep dive into the Dawn of Eve and Twilight of Adam. We need some answers. I want to know what the parents think is going on with their children. I’m a little nervous about Martha’s fate. Especially after watching Agent Young search her things for a way to silence her parents. All I really want is more of the same. A good adventure with a tinge of conspiracy looking to take down the patriarchy.

Cecile: It would be easy to dismiss this show as nothing new, but it was really entertaining, much darker than I expected, and ended up among my favorites of 2020. The easy answer would be that I want some answers to those cliffhangers from the Season 1 finale, but mostly I just want to see the fall out of what happened and how this experience changed the girls’ lives for the foreseeable future. I wish we could’ve seen more of Linh, but alas… unless there are more flashbacks, that seems unlikely. In any case, I can’t wait and will tune into Season 2 as soon as it airs!

Laura: I absolutely loved this season. I loved this show. For me, it made me think a lot about the people in my life and how much I rely on them, and vice versa. It’s interesting to watch this and think about how when you’re a teenager, your life really does oftentimes grow up around whoever you’re closest to. The writing and acting were fantastic - there were twists I didn’t see coming and characters I had to grow into loving, but it still happened, and overall, I’m super interested to see all my questions answered in Season 2. As much as I want to see the girls breaking free and kicking ass, what I’m most excited to see is what happened in those last days on the island. And I want to see Martha and Nora alive!

The Wilds isn’t what it seems at first. The writers spent all season building a multi-layered world for these characters to exist within. The performers did their jobs perfectly and made each character compelling and interesting in their own ways. This is the type of show that you have to watch from the very beginning and you can’t miss a single moment because every action and every encounter has a meaning and a purpose in the grander scheme of things. It might have slipped under the radar initially, but it won’t have that luxury going into Season 2. The writers set an exceedingly high bar for themselves with this first season and hopefully, they will be able to maintain that momentum as they craft the new season. After an immensely entertaining wild first season, the long wait begins to see how the story of our favorite Dawn of Eve ladies will continue.

Amazon has ordered their YA drama pilot "The Wilds" to series per deadline. It joins fellow YA series Panic, which was ordered a few weeks ago. The other YA drama pilot "College" is not moving forward.

Part survival drama, part dystopic slumber party, The Wilds follows a group of teenage girls from radically different backgrounds after an airplane crash strands them on a deserted island. The show explores the past and present struggles of these young women, offering up a vivid portrayal of what it means to grow up female in our time – whether you are lost in the wilderness or not.

The cast includes Mia Healey, Helena Howard, Reign Edwards and Shannon Berry

“We are thrilled to share this exciting original vision with our global audience,” said Jennifer Salke, Head of Amazon Studios. “We are proud to be the home for this authentically voiced, high stakes show brought to life by the talented Sarah Streicher, Amy B. Harris and our ABC Signature Studios partners.”

“Coming of age is not for the faint of heart,” said Streicher. “It can take as much grit and fire to survive our teenage years as it would to survive, say, on a deserted island. The Wilds grew from that notion, and it’s afforded me an opportunity to explore teenage-hood in all of its perils, joys, and heartbreaks. I’m beyond thrilled that it’s found a home at Amazon.”
