Results:

Coming in we knew this was going to be a fierce fight for the top spot on both polls. The contenders on both sides were very skilled and talented performers who delivered exceptional performances in 2020. On the Reader side, the ultimate winner surged out to a strong lead from the very beginning and was never again caught despite attempts to do so. The Staff side was also very competitive with the top spot changing hands a multitude of times and at times the top spot was even tied. Both of the ultimate winners are very deserving and have certainly earned the titles that have been given to them. They will both be honorable ambassadors as SpoilerTV’s 2020 Readers’ and Staff Choice Performers of the Year.

Wynonna Earp has a passionate fanbase that has been earned by the skilled performers who bring the beloved characters of the show to life. One of the most beloved is Nicole Haught who Katherine Barrell has passionately infused with heart and soul for four seasons now. Season Four allowed Barrell to showcase new complexities within the character as the story dove deeper into who Nicole is at her core. This is a character that has been hardened by thinking she had lost her true love. The audience got to witness the character grapple with all she had to endure while Waverly (Dominique Provost-Chalkley) was gone as well as everything that happened after she returned. Barrell took the audience along for the ride through all the drama, heartache, and ultimately the heartfelt passionate moments with Waverly. She has been a steadfast performer within the cast since the very beginning, so it is not lightly that it should be said that the first half of Season Four has been her very best with the series. Every performance she delivered in the first six episodes of this season can only best be described as a tour de force. She is very well-deserving of the title of SpoilerTV’s 2020 Readers’ Choice Performer of the Year.

Dead To Me spins a fast-paced tale of a singular friendship forged among the ashes of grief, anger, and the occasional murder. Judy Hale, one half of this show’s beating heart, is brought vividly to life by the perfection of Linda Cardellini’s performance. She tempered Judy’s kind quirkiness with a simmering fury, a charismatic combination that made it a wonderful experience to be caught up alongside Judy in each of her predicaments. Cardellini relishes the escalating challenges of the show’s many twists and turns; her zeal for the role combined with her instinctive graciousness have surely shaped the development of her character, which simply means Judy Hale wouldn’t exist without Cardellini. She is just likely to leave the audience hysterically breaking down in laughter as she is to reduce them to sobbing furiously on Judy’s behalf. For taking us on Judy’s adrenaline-packed roller coaster of love, laughter, despair, and countless hijinks, Linda Cardellini has been chosen as SpoilerTV’s 2020 Staff Choice Performer of the Year.

The winner articles for Katherine Barrell and Linda Cardellini will be out sometime in February, but in the meantime feel free to use the comments section to discuss these worthy winners and their incredible fellow nominees.

Original Post:

We had a problem with our polling software that caused the poll to crash and close. Staff voting is still ongoing, so as soon as that is complete we will release the results.

For the past 12 months, a vast array of performers have won the title of SpoilerTV's Readers' Choice Performer of the Month. Each of those winners will now compete one final time in the 2020 cycle to hold the title of 2020 Readers' Choice Performer of the Year. The winner of this poll will receive an article looking back at their performances from throughout 2020. Their win will also be notated at the top of all of the 2021 POTM cycle nomination and voting posts.

This is a group full of big names who had enough voting support behind them to propel them to a victory in each of their respective months. Whoever is crowned the ultimate winner will have to overcome many exceptional performers with very passionate fans who have an argument for why their contender deserves to win. Because of the passionate fans likely to flock to this poll and the comments, I urge kindness and polite banter. Make a pitch for why your contender deserves to win, but remain respectful for each other even if you don't agree on who should win in the end. No matter who wins in the end they will deserve it. 2020 was an unusual year, but through the chaos, these performers and all of their colleagues risked a lot to keep us entertained. Let's recognize a winner here and in the process pay our respects to an industry that helped keeps us all sane throughout a tough year.

Scroll on below to vote and come back on Sunday, January 10th after 6 pm ET to see who wins.

2019 Staff Choice Performer of the Year: Jodie Comer

Many sites have a Top 20 shows list. But no one does it to the size and scale of SpoilerTV. Covering 304 TV Shows, over 48 Thousand votes from Readers and Staff, this truly is the definitive list of best shows!

How did we come to our final conclusion? Using the Top 20 of Staff Choices (Article Here) and the Top 20 of the Readers Choice (Article Here), we combined the results based on their rank in each list and gave them a point score. For example, if a show was 3rd for staff and 12th for the readers, they would have 15 points in total (3+12). Whichever show has the lowest point score would win the overall top show of 2020.

The results are in the video below. The results are very different to both Staff and Readers' choice with some surprising additions!

Remember you can subscribe to our YouTube channel here.
The Haunting of Bly Manor surprised a lot of people when the central theme of the series ended up being more love story than ghost story. Yes, it had scares and jumps that one would expect from one of Netflix’s seasonal Haunting shows, but it also had a lot of heart. Despite the love stories encompassing the characters, it still had to accomplish its goal of being a series about a haunting. That required the cast to walk an exceptionally fine line to maintain suspense while guiding their characters through the development of complex relationships. The most complex of the relationships was between Amelia Eve’s Jamie and Victoria Pedretti’s Dani. Many viewers came into the series aware of Pedretti and her strong acting abilities, but Eve took many people by surprise. This relatively unknown actress, with a minimal resume, came in and took the show by storm. She held her own against a cast of gifted performers and despite limited screen time early on she still made Jamie feel meaningful and impactful to the overall story.

Eve was given great material to work with throughout the season, but The Beast in The Jungle (1x9) provided Eve with some deep content to bring to life. This episode spanned several years and showcased the importance of Jamie in Dani’s life. Eve leaned into the lighter moments between Jamie and Dani with a glint in her eyes and a wide smile while in the same episode delivering heart-wrenching performances in the deeper moments of emotion and loss that the character had to endure. Jamie was Dani’s rock and Eve’s performance was so relatable and honest she helped ground the audience in the love story. The performance she delivered throughout the season, and particularly in this episode, left an impression that will not easily be forgotten. For a relative newcomer to the industry, she took her first major role and rapidly became a name that will not be forgotten. She is charismatic and charming while also being honest and bold in her acting choices. These qualities made her a well-deserving winner of the title of SpoilerTV’s October Readers’ Choice Performer of the Month.

Continue reading below to find out our thoughts regarding her performance. Throughout most of the show, Jamie is presented as a supporting player, but the finale redefines her role, perspective, and participation in the tragic events and legacy of Bly Manor. How does Eve's portrayal of Jamie in this episode tie together the show's story and reframe it as both a ghost story and a love story?

Aimee: While Jamie didn’t get a lot of story early on, she was always a pivotal character in the overall arc of the story. Her place in this final episode helped to shrink in the overarching story and focus it on Jamie and Dani. Eve was pivotal to making Jamie’s critical role in the finale play exactly right and hit all the necessary emotional points. While all the characters were subject to the scares and trauma of the ghosts, it was Jamie’s role to bring stability to Dani’s life in a time of chaos. Jamie is Dani’s rock and no matter the moment, Eve always made sure that Jamie’s unwavering love for her was apparent and unquestionable. She remained stoic and supportive when Pedretti was having to portray Dani slowly falling into the iron grip of the dark beast living inside of her. Eve’s strong and heartfelt work helped shift the finale away from horror to love. The love story didn’t end with them having a traditional happily ever after, but the strong sense of love and loyalty that Eve infused into Jamie helped to really showcase the profound connection these two characters shared. Her portrayal arguably is what allowed the final scene to have such a profound impact. Carla Gugino (Older Jamie) brought Jamie’s story to a conclusion, but had Eve not so perfectly set everything up, that final surprise would not have worked nearly as well as it did.

Ellys: Jamie being the narrator completely shifts the story from just being Dani’s to being the story of her and Dani’s love. We realize in fact that everything we have seen (or are seeing if we are rewatching) is through Jamie’s perspective of her memories. Throughout this episode, Eve shows us an especially important part of who Jamie is. She doesn’t look away from or try to rewrite the truth, and she doesn’t shy away from the darkness. Denial is something that hurts many other Bly Manor characters in ways they can’t recover from, but Jamie is different. She doesn’t retreat when Dani talks about Viola’s (Kate Siegel) presence still lurking. She doesn’t hesitate to dive into the water to confirm her worst fear. Eve carries herself with such frank boldness, her heart proudly displayed on her sleeve, in this role that we trust Jamie as immediately as Dani does. These traits also demonstrate why Jamie is the only person who can be the narrator, as she alone can-do justice to the full scope of what happened at Bly Manor and how the survivors were affected.

Jamie, in many ways, at first appears to us as a classic love interest, with the show's narrator announcing her as such from her first appearance. How does Eve's performance throughout the show reintroduce stakes and suspense into the love story? How does she find space between the lines to color in who Jamie is outside of her connection to Dani?

Aimee: It was clear from the first meeting of Jamie and Dani that love was on the horizon for them. Just the promise of love is enough to up the stakes in a horror genre production. Relationships in this genre very rarely end well. It felt certain as the story started to unfold that this couple would likely not get a happily ever after in the traditional sense. So, then it became about everything that came in the middle of the story. How would they fall in love? How long would they get to bask in that love? How would they each cope without the other? Eve did an exceptional job of bringing to life the answer to each of those questions. She made subtle acting choices that showed Jamie falling in love with Dani. From soft smiles and flirty glances to bold gestures, not even one of these pivotal moments went by without Eve really locking into the essence of the moment. Even when she was just reacting to the lines Pedretti was delivering, she didn’t let a single minute go by where Jamie’s attraction and growing love for Dani wasn’t front and center. After their love was declared and they were together, Eve kicked her performance up a few extra notches. She showed how protective Jamie was over Dani. When Jamie raced into the lake to be at Dani’s side, the anxiousness was visible in Eve’s eyes, yet she kept her voice strong and supportive, so Dani knew she wasn’t alone. The same happened when they began their lives together as they left Bly Manor. In every scene they had together, Eve captured the moment perfectly, even the smallest of gestures, and used them to portray how in love Jamie was with Dani. Then came the heartbreaking end at the lake when Jamie had to accept that the love of her life was the new Lady of the Lake and they were to be forever separated. The way that Eve looked at her ring so longingly allowed the audience to see that even without Dani’s physical body at her side, these two women weren’t ever going to truly be separated. Eve let the audience see that Jamie was never going to let go of Dani. She has this brilliant ability to make every single instance, verbal or not, matter. There is never a single scene where she wasn’t beautifully selling the love story.

Ellys: Two scenes that particularly stand out to me are Jamie’s introduction and the proposal scene. In the first, Eve saunters casually into the kitchen and makes a great display of washing her hands, as Jamie is purposely avoiding any interaction with the others at first. It’s such an interesting tableau because Dani ought to be the outsider here, as the newcomer. Eve’s performance, though, with Jamie’s carefree mingling, her slightly roguish demeanor, tells us that Jamie is the outsider, that she’s untouched by the ghosts of Bly Manor, her shadow is her own. She’s the master of her destiny, free in a way that no one else in the kitchen is at that moment. This state of being makes Jamie our constant, the one person we and Dani can trust to be exactly who she appears to be. Later, in the proposal scene, there is an absolutely charming bit where Jamie drops her cooking efforts to tend to the plant Dani rescued. Eve handles the plant with such tender expertise, gently lifting the leaves and rummaging through its soil to make sure the plant is comfortable. When Jamie finds the ring, Eve turns around with such unfettered hope and adoration on her face that it takes your breath away.
Eve shares most of her scenes throughout the season with Pedretti, but they are surrounded in this series by some extraordinary performers. Besides Pedretti, who else did you enjoy watching her act opposite of? What were some of your favorite scenes between them?

Aimee: I really enjoyed watching Rahul Kohli bring Owen to life. Owen was such a reliable character and Kohli did some fantastic work in his own right. Eve and Kohli did share several scenes together, but I would have loved to see them work together much more than they did. One of my favorite scenes was when they are at Owen’s restaurant just talking and catching up. There was such a natural ease they brought to their performance that showcased the shared experiences the characters had been through. Another favorite scene was just a short moment in time, but it was after they found Hannah’s (T’Nia Miller) body. Not a word was spoken, but the way the characters seemed to find comfort in each other was truly touching. These two were great scene partners and I would have liked to have seen more of them working together.

Ellys: In my mind, all Eve’s scenes are with Pedretti, because there is always a sense that Jamie is subconsciously thinking of Dani, even when they’re apart. You always feel that invisible thread between their hearts, drawing them together, writing their stories on the same page. While choices of direction and music also help create this feeling, Eve’s performance also conveys this connection as we observe Jamie’s body language gradually shift to reflect that she isn’t a person alone anymore, that there’s someone else she’s carrying with her in her mind. This quality forms quite the foil for Dani’s far less romantic haunting later in the series.

This was Eve’s first major role, but surely won’t be her last. What type of character would you like to see her portray next? Do you think there is one genre or another that would suit her the best as she moves forward with her career?

Aimee: Just based on the wide range she displayed in this show, I don’t think there is much she can’t do. She has incredible timing with her line delivery, and she can brilliantly deliver snarky lines. I think she’d be good in a comedy if the right role ever came her way. I think the sweet spot for her right now would be something in the fantasy or drama realm. A role that allows her to cover a wide range of emotions and really dive into the depth of her character would really highlight some of her great strengths. She knows how to convey emotion and make it feel raw and real, so that could really serve her well in a more dramatic type of role. With her range, she could honestly go in almost any direction and make it work for her style. She seems like a very versatile actress and that will serve her well as her career grows and evolves.

Ellys: Amelia Eve’s interviews about this role have been a delight to read. She approaches her craft not just as an actress but also as a storyteller, and the Jamie that has captured viewers’ hearts is the product of Eve’s commitment to detail and excellence. Eve deserves her pick of roles, and I think original characters especially will be her forte. Directors and showrunners should give her enough latitude to put her stamp on the role, to find the beating heart of her characters as she did with Jamie. I can see her tackling just about any character type.

Eve was given a major part to play in the final episode of the season. She was front and center as Jamie and Dani’s love story played out over several years before coming to a tragic end. That gave her a lot of amazing material to work with. What do you think were Eve’s most outstanding scenes from this episode? What made those scenes stand out to you the most?

Aimee: I honestly loved every single scene that Eve was in during this episode. I thought the writers did an amazing job highlighting the Jamie and Dani love story in this episode. Eve delivered an inspired tour de force performance. There are a few scenes that I’d like to highlight. First up is the scene at the lake where Jamie charges into the water. Eve displayed so much anxiety and panic through her eyes, yet she was so sturdy and supportive as she had Jamie try to calm down the traumatized Dani. Then there was the flower shop scene where Jamie confesses her love. The fact that I adore the movie Imagine Me and You probably helped make this scene a little extra special. Rumor has it that the movie inspired the writer regarding that scene and before I even knew that as soon as I saw it, I immediately thought of that movie. The way Eve enacted Jamie’s love confession was brilliant. She portrayed Jamie as a bit shy and uncertain yet confident and proud. Then her knowing smile just before the characters kiss was a fun lighthearted moment that she nailed. Another standout scene was the proposal scene. When Dani asked Jamie to be her wife, despite not being able to legally be married yet in that era, the overwhelming wash of emotions that consumed Eve’s face as she showed how much the proposal meant to her was heartwarming. I also really appreciated the return of stoic and supportive Jamie during the dishwashing scene where Dani freaked out after seeing the Lady of the Lake in the water. Eve’s eyes expressed Jamie’s concern for the woman she loves, but her voice and embrace were strong and steadfast. That scene really showed how much Dani means to Jamie. The final scene that allowed Eve to really showcase Jamie’s immense pain and hurt over losing Jamie was at the lake’s edge. She had just swum to the bottom of the lake essentially begging Dani to take her too only to emerge defeated and heartbroken. She had Jamie look down at the ring on her finger and while she was still in immense pain over losing Dani, Eve allowed a small moment of acceptance and solace to consume Jamie in her time of mourning, that ring meant the world to her and was the last real physical connection she had to her true love. This entire episode was a real showcase for Eve, and these were just a few of the scenes that stood out the most, but every scene she had in this episode was noteworthy.

Ellys: If I must pick a favorite scene, it’s when Jamie offers to stay with Dani, completely accepting that it will mean living alongside Dani dealing with a burden that will never go away. In Eve’s face, you see Jamie thinking through this decision before stepping forward, checking it against her own heart and strength. When Eve lifts her head defiantly, letting the tears fall unhindered, it’s a moment of triumph for the character and for the love story. We see Jamie realize without a doubt that she can be everything Dani needs her to be and more. If there’s a scene that absolutely blasts my soul into smithereens, Eve’s performance in the scene where Jamie and Dani are kneeling by the tub is emotional warfare on a level for which no one could have been prepared. Words aren’t sufficient to describe the force of Eve’s sincerity, the authentic desperation she imbues Jamie’s words with when she begs Dani to hold on to her, to let Jamie feel everything for both. You know wholly and completely that Jamie would sacrifice anything, pay any price, to keep Dani safe and happy. And so, we understand why Dani can’t give the love of her life that opportunity. The entire finale of the show rests on Eve’s depiction of Jamie’s devotion.

What are your final thoughts on her winning this recognition?

Aimee: She is relatively new to the industry and she made a big splash in her first major role. I think being able to hold her own against such a standout cast was impressive in and of itself. She made Jamie so much more than just a character, she made her feel like a real person whose story you were watching play out before your eyes. When Jamie was happy, Eve made sure that joy translated in such an immense way that the viewer couldn’t help but smile. When Jamie was sad or hurting, she made the audience feel Jamie’s pain. She’s a very versatile actress who took a big opportunity and made it her breakout role. She is someone we will be hearing about for an awfully long time to come, so I’m extremely excited that she won this recognition for her first major role. Between her incredible range and impressive ability to convey emotion she was perfectly suited to this role and definitely deserving of this win.

Ellys: The best love stories and the best ghost stories are the ones that reach out and grab our hearts, that give us a knot in our chests that makes it hard for us to breathe. The stories that accomplish this feat are the ones that draw us in with equally strong joy and sorrow; these are the stories we want to revisit. Fittingly, Amelia Eve is the best kind of storyteller, and I think our readers would agree that she has captured the hearts of her audience in that most permanent of ways.

Amelia Eve was introduced to a broad audience via her role as Jamie. Nobody had any expectations of what to expect from her or any preconceived idea of what kind of performer she was. From the moment she stepped on screen as Jamie she had a prime opportunity to make a name for herself and she did just that. In the process, she set an extremely high bar for herself in her first major role. If this is the sort of performance that she delivers right out of the gate, then there is unlimited potential for her as her career grows. She is charismatic and doesn’t hold back. She gives every word and every movement meaning and a purpose to aid in the evolution of her character. It’s not only her own character about whom she is concerned. She always seems so in-tune with her scene partner and does her best to help support them. A performer like her who gives so much to a character and is so present when in character and conscious of the societal importance of her character is sure to be a name that will only become more prominent within the industry. For her first major role as Jamie in the finale of The Haunting of Bly Manor, Amelia Eve is SpoilerTV’s October Readers’ Choice Performer of the Month.
More of an eerie musing than a scary tale, The Haunting of Bly Manor will be remembered for the deeply affecting performances of its ensemble. T'Nia Miller, who plays loyal Bly housekeeper Hannah Gross gives one of the most emotionally devastating showcases of the acting craft. In The Altar of the Dead (1x5), the truth about Hannah is unspooled through a series of flashbacks playing on a loop, each revelation more heartbreaking than the last. Miller delivers a performance that is by turns commanding and terrifying, tearing up the audience's emotions as we along with Hannah process a truth she will continue to deny. Miller's work brings with it an incredible chill. For all these reasons and many more T'Nia Miller is SpoilerTV's October Staff Choice Performer of the Month.
Like all those who walk in Bly Manor, Hannah Gross's life is intertwined with tragedy. This episode uncovers the full extent of her personal tragedy, yet throughout the series, Miller's performance is the primary clue as to what happened to Hannah. How does she create the sense of foreboding in advance that makes the truth in episode five inevitable?

Darthlocke: One way I think the foreboding element occurs for Hannah is really an execution choice. Especially when one looks at an episode like The Altar of the Dead that intentionally goes back to alternate versions of scenes, in which Hannah argues with herself in the guise of Owen (Rahul Kohil). That's not to say that Miller wasn't absolutely the right casting choice here because she can present a quiet reserve that feeds into the tragedy of what happens to her character. She's a performer who can carry a sense of dignity and compassion without saying much at all. I think very few actresses can pull that off.

Ellys: While the show gives the audience many breadcrumbs, especially in the first episode, Miller herself is the revelation. Her Hannah is a pillar of poise, an elegant yet emotionally absent presence. Miller makes deep grief visible on and around Hannah's every movement; her very footsteps seem to have this weight. The mysterious nature of the grief in her performance creates as much apprehensive suspense as any fleeting glimpse of a ghost or ominous musical cue does.

Marko: Something was intriguing about Miller's Hannah from the moment she was introduced. Miller used Hannah's shyness and sensation of profoundly belonging at Bly, to create a character that intrigues with the sorrow that surrounded her. From the get-go there was a mysterious feeling about the character with a twinkle of sadness in her eyes and a hidden smirk on her face, making me ask myself was she a victim of the Manor or the master behind it all?

A recurring reference that Hannah makes is how Bly Manor is her home. In Miller's performance and in Hannah's story, are we shown that this statement is true, or is it a compassionate falsehood she clings to?

Darthlocke: I don't think it's a compassionate falsehood in terms of the story itself. The narrative is about different kinds of tragic love stories that for many of the characters happen through the space of Bly. Hannah is no exception since we view her mostly through her memories that dance around an almost romance with Owen. So, if home is where the heart is, then Bly is it for Hannah. If there are other meaningful relationships outside of Bly with characters unseen, that's a fair debate, but I don't feel that was the point the story was making through the scope of memories.

Ellys: We don't get to spend nearly enough time with Hannah, in my opinion, but one of the reasons this episode successfully packs the gut punch that it does is how effectively Miller translates Hannah's connection with Bly Manor. The way she goes about her tasks or even just her wanderings around the house is marked by ownership and love. Her protective nature over the house, her pride in it, her affection for it, Miller fills in these details between the lines for us with small gestures. When Hannah is in Bly Manor, there's a level of comfort with her surroundings that, of all the characters, only Hannah possesses.

Marko: Bit of both, I guess. Hannah really wanted Bly to be her home, she wanted to belong there, but it was just a place where she hid from her pain and the outer world. While the Wingraves deeply loved her and made her feel like part of the family, at the core she felt like "just" the help. The scene with Peter Quint (Oliver Jackson-Cohen) in this episode reflects that. As Hannah was revisiting all the meaningful memories she had, she came back to that moment where Peter once again reminded her that at the end of the day she was just the help. And while I wouldn't call Bly Hannah's home, it was her safe haven.

Throughout this episode, Hannah is often in conversation with Owen Sharma, portrayed by Rahul Kohli, her frequent scene partner. How does the shift of their dynamic in their scenes and responses to each other in this episode create the uneasy atmosphere?

Darthlocke: Well again, Owen in most of these scenes are actually Hannah or rather a version of her subconscious. Just the fact that Hannah keeps getting brought back to the memories of when she interviewed Owen and the night where Owen and Hannah talked about the future together by the fire, was the push and pull of Hannah fighting what she has been denying or allowing herself to be lost in. It's truly a combination of the way Owen taunts her, the execution of scenes appearing as time slips, and eventually, Miller's performance reacting to coming back to Owen in near-identical scenes that make the atmosphere.

Ellys: In an alternate universe, we would have gotten an entire season dedicated to Owen and Hannah. Their story may be an afterthought in Bly Manor's grand scheme, but when Kohli and Miller are onscreen together you forget they are supporting players. Perhaps one of the most emotionally challenging aspects of this episode is that the majority of Owen and Hannah's scenes lack the usual warmth between the two. That glow of mutual affection and camaraderie is missing, one of the most significant indications of what is happening. As a reminder of what has been lost and what the two shared, these scenes are an impeccable showcase for both performers.

Marko: As mentioned in my previous answer, Bly felt like Hannah's safe haven and Owen was a big part of it. To have his presence and essence in her life made all that happened in the past with her husband/boyfriend Sam tolerable. So as the moments in the kitchen with Owen started to glitch and trigger Hannah's awareness a vacuum was created that gripped you as the fear and panic were starting to appear in Hannah's face and eyes. Miller and Kohli were impeccable scene partners, the way they were losing themselves in each other's eyes throughout the season left me tachycardic.

This season gave Miller a ton of amazing material to bring to life. What were some of your favorite performances of Miller's throughout the season?

Darthlocke: I really liked the one scene where she goes back to the night of spending time with Owen by the fire again because she gives him a different answer about going to Paris. I think up until that point, it wasn't clear if she shared the same feelings for Owen that he had for her. It is also what makes her realize that she's a ghost even more tragic. I also liked the scene where she was trying to help save Flora (Amelie Bea Smith) in the end, only to not have very much power against the Lady of the Lake.

Ellys: The finale gives us a vastly different Hannah for Miller to play, one that can no longer deny her reality, and her last moments compose a fragmented, determined effort to protect her home one more time. Miller hits every tragic note exactly right in the too-short last exchange with Owen, as well as Hannah's cruelly abbreviated farewell to Henry (Henry Thomas). Miller's performance here is truly just pieces of who Hannah is and has been.

Marko: I would say the scenes in the small chapel. I wouldn't really say Miller's Hannah was a preachy person but her black and white look at the world combined with the serenity and simplicity of those chapel scenes had something incredibly beautiful to them. The combination created some sort of confessionary that allowed these flawed people to get a sort of absolution as Hannah provided the characters with light when they were engulfed with shadows and the unbearable truth when they were blinded by the lights.

What do you think were Miller's most outstanding scenes from this episode?

Darthlocke: For me, it was the gravity of the scene when Hannah finds out what happened to her. It is so devastating because she had been trying to protect the kids, including Miles (Benjamin Evan Ainsworth), and right before Dani (Victoria Pedretti) arrived, Miles under Peter's influence just pushes her into the well. Hannah's ghost appears and deals with Dani's arrival like nothing ever happened. Everyone just walks by the well. For her to finally remember that and having that scene replay so casually is really what did it for me.

Ellys: Miller, in essence, gives a one-woman play in this episode. Hannah progresses from a tranquil participant in recreations of her life to an anxious actor trying to stick to the script, even as her mind processes and refutes the truth. Miller takes us on a whirling carousel ride, spinning in and out of reality just as her character does.

Marko: Most definitely the scenes with Owen in the kitchen. As earlier mentioned, the pain and fear that Miller exuded as her reality started to crumble were simply captivating. The tremble of panic in Miller's voice, the fear in her eyes just made me love the character and put her performance on an outstanding level. Miller had such a deep understanding for what Hannah was going through, she was on the edge of a mental breakdown and used that moment when she met (and in my opinion fell in love with) Owen to keep her calm and grounded, kept herself captured in the warm embrace of his kind and sincere heart.

What are your final thoughts on her winning this recognition?

Darthlocke: I think she is a wonderful actress! I truly hope to see much more of her, no matter the genre. Again, there are just not a lot of actresses that could carry the weight of dignity, compassion, and something solid, yet be so reserved in her speech and body language.

Ellys: This role was my introduction to T'Nia Miller, and I am looking forward to seeing her future projects. Currently, Miller is slated to star in AMC's La Fortuna miniseries scheduled for 2021. It's clear from her work in Bly Manor that she is a leading lady-caliber performer.

Marko: I wasn't familiar with T'Nia Miller till I watched this show, but from now on I am a fan and will follow her to the darkest corners of the entertainment business. This was a well-deserved recognition as she was able to give life to such a pure and honest character. Miller's Hannah didn't know for compromise, she had just this sense of right and a code of loyalty that carried her through life, even when haunted in death.

A good actor elicits a variety of emotions from their audience while making the task of bringing a complex character to life seem effortless. The performance of T’Nia Miller as Hannah in The Altar of the Dead episode of The Haunting of Bly Manor is the very epitome of that statement. Her exceptional work has rightfully earned her a legion of new fans. For all the brilliant elements of her work discussed in this article and all the other elements we didn't cover, T’Nia Miller is SpoilerTV’s October Staff Choice Performer of the Month.

A monthly feature in which we're trying to find the most compelling, best acted, written, directed and just generally great, memorable scenes that we've seen in the past month on TV.

Folie-lex: It was really hard to pick a favourite scene in an episode which included a Katie/Oliver hug AND Cooper declaring he loves the Ottos, AND Lonnie admitting he just wants Greg to like him and stick around. But in the end Trip saying to Taylor he loves her kinda wins by a hair. Taylor has been freaking out because an online test keeps on finding them incompatible. Taking Katie's advice and tricking Taylor into listening to what he has to say, Trip incorporates a beautiful declaration of his love to Taylor during his speech at Maria and Ablin's wedding ceremony. It's very "Trip" in making sure to explain how science and math, like love, don't make sense. But unlike those things where love is concerned it doesn't matter. Love is something you feel. And he does. Move over Greg. Your future son-in-law is king of the grand gestures now.

Folie-lex: Dre explains to a dejected Junior who after learning about all the voter suppression throughout the years, has given up on even trying to register, that he should try regardless, because the vote is their only weapon. Punctuated by a beautiful historical montage, like Black-ish does, the scene is inspiring and emotional, and offers a rare sweet father/son moment between the two.
Jamie: Bow yells at Junior for meeting up with his girlfriend. This show sure knocked it out of the park with its first episode and this was without a doubt my favorite scene. Bow absolutely nailed the reason why it's so important to follow the guidelines. Even people who don't watch the show should watch this scene!

Ellys: The third episode of what may be a redemption tour for the show concluded with an incredibly moving reunion, yet the scene that immediately preceded it was no less poignant. After sending Isabelle away, sacrificing their chance of reconnecting, Al returned to help Dwight and the others, explaining that she couldn't lose another brother. Dwight's joy at her return, despite how he had gone above and beyond to get her back to Isabelle, was cathartic. It was an intensely happy and hopeful moment, one that Grace and Amelio made all the more powerful with their performances.

FILTHY RICH, "Psalm 25:3", October 5, 2020, Actors: Kim Cattrall, Melia Kreiling
The Scene: Margaret has Ginger on her show
DJRiter: Margaret has Ginger on her show, Wings of a Dove, following the latter’s scandalous baptism. Watching the characters these two actresses play go toe to toe with one another is a highlight of this irreverent show each week. During this scene they were at the top of their games, both melt in your mouth sugar sweet on the outside but seething with anger on the inside. They are the reason I come back to this show each week.

LOVECRAFT COUNTRY, "Rewind 1921", October 11, 2020, Actors: Jurnee Smollett, Regina Taylor, The Scene: Leti stays with Hattie in the burning house
Justyna: This show has truly been one of the biggest TV surprises of the year for me. Unlike anything I've seen before. I'm not sure I'll ever be able to forget the many haunting moments and horror in this story. One of the hardest scenes to get through for me was Leti staying in the burning house. The nightmare of the Tulsa race massacre should never be forgotten and I expected this episode to be an emotional experience. But Leti holding Hattie's hand as Tic's great grandmother burns to death... that's an image that will stay with me for a long while. Deeply tragic, heartbreaking and painful story. But one that had to be told. Both actresses delivered wonderful performances. Jurnee Smollett steals the show on more than one occasion during this season. Thank you for this important and memorable work, to the entire cast & crew.

NEXT, "File #1", October 6, 2020, Actor: John Slattery
The Scene: Paul LeBlanc’s opening monologue
DJRiter: Paul LeBlanc’s chilling opening monologue to audience about nerds with the ability to burn down the world. His very thought-provoking and sarcastic speech about nerds, AI’s and the dangers of the wrong people having power in their hands set this tone for this gripping show. I love Slattery in just about anything he is in and he is perfect for this part and show.

After initial unsuccessful attempt to convince Amara to join him and Sam in their fight against Chuck, Dean comes back to confront her. As painful as this topic is for him, he can't help but ask Amara why did she bring his mother back to life, what was the point of her action, since all it ultimately did was lead to another tragic ending. Her answer is honest, makes it clear she understands far more than it may seem and her words mean a great deal and hit Dean hard. But his pain quickly turns to anger, to fury. He's more than tired to be stuck in a story, unable to control his own fate, trapped, just like everyone else, including Amara. She wants to trust him, she asks whether she can. Amara is a very interesting chatacter, I am certainly curious where she'll end up in the end. I've always enjoyed her interactions with Dean. These two have this unexpected connection, a shared story and the actors seem at ease with each other, both delivering memorable performances in moments like this one. Special shout-out to Jensen Ackles, Dean's internal struggle and a dozen of conflicting emotions he's experiencing during this one conversation, are all wonderfully portrayed here. Kudos!

TED LASSO, "The Hope that Kills You", October 2, 2020, Actors: Brett Goldstein and more
The Scene: The crowd cheers Roy out of the stadium
Folie-lex: Aften an impossible save where the "old timer" took down Jamie's rising star and to quote Ted "stopped him from the getting an easy one" a badly injured Roy needs to leave the game (possibly for good). The crown, and the people in the pub chant in unison Roy's chant, cheering him out of the stadium like the legend he is. Roy visibly moved and emotional, claps back to the fans in gratitude. It's a signature Sports Movie moment sure, but it hits all the right notes as Roy has proved himself throughout S1 a character to truly root for.

THE BOYS, "What I Know", October 9, 2020, Actors: Karl Urban, Shantel VanSanten and more, The Scene: Butcher's choice
Justyna: There are so many outstanding scenes in these last two episodes of the season. I was very tempted to go with the "girls get it done" moment or one of the rare light-hearted exchanges, so needed in this dark and action-packed story. But ultimately I decided to highlight the one scene that truly took me by surprise, in the best possible way. William Butcher is a very complicated man, he's not exactly a hero that we can all root for, or even a good guy torn by internal struggle. He is what he is, what this world, the people around him and his own choices made him. His deal with Edgar was unfortunately something we could expect from him, but him admitting the truth to Becca and actually making a selfless choice to keep Becca and Ryan safe and together, that is a side of Billy Butcher we are not very familliar with as the viewers. It clearly makes an impression on the rest of the group and it's rather heartbreaking to watch, with Becca asking him to leave with her and him realizing why he can't. This scene makes everything that follows so much harder, starting with the car crash a minute later. Both characters share quite a few important moments in this episode, but this one stayed with me the longest. Karl Urban and Shantel VanSanten are absolutely wonderful in this scene, and the finale overall. Kudos to the entire cast & crew for all the fantastic work on the series.

THE CONNERS, "Keep On Truckin' Six Feet Apart", October 21, 2020, Actors: Lecy Goranson, Sara Gilbert, The Scene: The job interview
Shirleena: Becky and Darlene go to Wellman Plastics plant for a job interview. Darlene was having a hard time dealing with the reality of having to give up on writing and having to get a job at the factory. Both Becky and Darlene get hired, hoping that their mother's spirit is with them.
Ellys: It's You. It's Me. It's Us. The follow-up to the viewer-acclaimed Hill House miniseries works far better when you view it as an audition reel for its ensemble of beyond perfectly splendid actors. In terms of the story itself, however, there are occasionally standout scenes, one of which is this dramatic event when Dani (Pedretti) finally finds herself face-to-face with Peter Quint (Jackson-Cohen) and Rebecca Jessel (Sharif) and learns the true extent of their scheme involving Flora (Bea Smith) and Miles (Ainsworth). The chilling scene belongs to Jackson-Cohen as Quint delivers a tearful appeal to Miles that is cloaked in raw grief and fear so impeccably that even we forget for a moment just how very sinister his intent is.
Justyna: This is such a great and entertaining show. I would never think I'd enjoy a story centered around a guy who prefers silence over conversation and is only ever seen with a helmet on his head. And yet here we are. I genuinely think it might be my favorite Star Wars story overall. This premiere was heavily focused on an impossible fight of the town of Mos Pelgo against Krayt Dragon. A huge, almost invulnerable creature eating everything in its way. The town’s Marshal, Cobb Vanth, the Mandalorian, a tribe of Tusken Raiders and the townsfolk all join forces (despite their many differences) to defeat the dragon in a battle that ensues. The visuals are wonderfully done, the fight is well choreographed and Mandalorian's final idea proves to be both insanely dangerous and ultimately successful. The Wild West of the space indeed. Kudos to the entire cast & crew of the series. Always glad to be a fan.
Laura B: The Final Battle against Krayt Dragon. What an action-packed first episode to kick off the second season. Everything was wonderfully choreographed, and despite my dismay at using Banthas for bait, this is the "wild west" era of Star Wars in the Skywalker Saga and the pairing of Cobb, Banth, Din Djarin, and Tusken Raiders was a winning combo! Not to mention a fun easter egg in parallel plot to The Old Republic!

THE RIGHT STUFF, "Advent", October 23, 2020, Actors: Jake McDorman, Ella Paige
The Scene: Alan teaches „Alice“ how to raise the flag
Marko: Alan is a faulty character with questionable moral choices but he is always there for his family. The connection he established with his emotionally disturbed niece grew from scene to scene and highlighted with this moment which gave her a place in their life/family. Giving her purpose, acceptance and stability was all Alice could‘ve asked for.
Folie-lex: Unlikely parents-to-be and tentatively falling in love duo Kevin and Madison spent the majority of the show's 2-hour S5 premiere worrying about the fate of one of their babies, during which time Kevin proposes to Madison. After they get the all-clear "good news" in fear it was just an emotionally motivated proposal Madison lets Kevin know he's off the hook. An adorable back and forth ensues where each of them seems to realize mostly for themselves they're both in this for the long haul. This non-conventional love story for Kevin is off to a great start.

TRUTH SEEKERS, "The Girl with All the Ghosts", October 30, 2020, Actor: Malcolm McDowell, The Scene: Richard decides to make his first YouTube video
Prpleight: Gus' dad Richard decides to make his first YouTube video. Unfortunately, dealing with the filters is NOT a user friendly feature. Richard is shocked to discover the rabbit ears and bunny tail in his video. Of course his attempts to cancel and delete the video result in him posting the video. It's an odd moment to feel real, but it did and it was really funny.

A relative newcomer to television, Amelia Eve delivered a powerfully evocative performance as Jamie in The Haunting Of Bly Manor. While at first it appeared that Jamie was merely a supporting player in the show’s traumatic events, the series finale The Beast In The Jungle (1x9) gave Eve the opportunity to tell us Jamie’s full story. The episode spanned years, with Eve showing Jamie’s evolution over time as an individual and as a loving partner to Dani Clayton (Victoria Pedretti). Eve made viewers feel the impact of life’s most tender joys and most vicious cruelties, while simultaneously tying together the show’s entire narrative and themes with her performance. It is a testament to Eve’s artistic caliber that she accomplishes this feat without sacrificing the sincerity of her performance. The years that pass throughout the episode never translate into the episode feeling rushed or abbreviated, in large part thanks to the authenticity that Eve conveys. Audiences will not soon forget Bly Manor’s residents or the rising stars that compose its cast. For bringing Jamie to life, for imbuing Jamie with a compassion and spirit so authentic that we, like Dani, feel that we have always known her, Amelia Eve is SpoilerTV’s October Readers’ Choice Performer of the Month.

More of an eerie musing than a scary tale, The Haunting Of Bly Manor will be remembered for the deeply affecting performances of its ensemble. T’Nia Miller, who plays loyal Bly housekeeper Hannah Gross gives one of the most emotionally devastating showcases of the acting craft. In The Altar of the Dead (1x5), the truth about Hannah is unspooled through a series of flashbacks playing on loop, each revelation more heartbreaking than the last. Miller delivers a performance that is by turns commanding and terrifying, tearing up the audience’s emotions as we along with Hannah process a truth she will continue to deny. Miller’s work brings with it an incredible chill, a veritable confetti of goosebumps. For all of these reasons and many more T’Nia Miller is SpoilerTV’s October Staff Choice Performer of the Month.

NETFLIX MAKES OVERALL SERIES DEAL WITH MIKE FLANAGAN AND TREVOR MACY

-- Flanagan and Macy formalize long-term partnership under Intrepid Pictures banner --
-- Deal includes an all-new chapter in The Haunting anthology --

Hollywood, Calif. - February 21, 2019 -- Netflix has entered into a multi-year overall television deal with Mike Flanagan and Trevor Macy. Following the success of The Haunting of Hill House, Flanagan and Macy will develop and produce new series exclusively for Netflix, including an all-new chapter in The Haunting anthology, with the next installment chronicling a new story with all new characters.

Beginning with this new deal, Macy and Flanagan make official their prolific seven-year partnership, which has generated six movies and a series, under the Intrepid Pictures banner. Intrepid will continue to produce both television and features; so far the partnership has resulted in six films including Gerald's Game, Oculus, and Hush as well as Netflix's first original horror series The Haunting of Hill House, a modern reimagining of Shirley Jackson's iconic novel, produced with Paramount Television and Amblin Television.

"Mike Flanagan and Trevor Macy are masterful at creating authentically frightening stories that leave audiences on the edge of their seats, but unable to look away," said Cindy Holland, Vice President, Original Content at Netflix. "We're excited to continue our partnership with them on The Haunting series and future projects to come."

"Netflix has been an important part of our story, and we're proud to have worked with them on The Haunting of Hill House, not to mention Gerald's Game, Hush, and Before I Wake," said Flanagan and Macy. "They've enabled and supported a great deal of our work and we look forward to much more."

In features, which are separate from this deal, Flanagan and Macy are in post-production on Doctor Sleep, the feature adaptation of Stephen King's 2013 follow-up to his seminal novel The Shining, starring Ewan McGregor and Rebecca Ferguson, at Warner Bros. Pictures, for a November 8, 2019 release. Flanagan directed and penned the adaptation, while Macy produced with Jon Berg. Intrepid is also in post-production on Eli, directed by Ciaran Foy and produced by Macy, which will be released on Netflix globally later this year.

The Haunting of Hill House is a modern reimagining of Shirley Jackson's iconic novel, produced with Paramount Television and Amblin Television. After being released in October 2018, the show quickly became an online sensation generating strong reviews and garnering award nominations from the Motion Picture Sound Editors, Writers Guild of America, and Art Directors Guild. In addition to Flanagan and Macy, the show was executive produced by Meredith Averill and Co-Presidents of Amblin Television Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey.
