Last Week on Syfy, Z Nation aired its two-part finale, while Van Helsing ramped up the stakes heading into its final episodes. Also, Ghost Wars had a solid character episode, Superstition faltered, and Happy! built upon its solid series premiere with an entertaining second episode.

And by the way, congratulations to Z Nation and Van Helsing fans for the renewals! Both shows deserve it!

Z Nation - 'Mt. Weather' & 'The Black Rainbow'

Z Nation ended its rather uneven season with quite the bang. The two-hour finale (in the U.S. at least) saw Team Bite Mark retrieve the zombified President in his bunker, and then using his thumbprints to stop Zona's cataclysmic Black Rainbow.

'Mt. Weather' felt like it could have been compressed into half an episode. There were parts that felt dragged out for the sake of fulling in the 45 minutes. The episode really did not leave much to talk about and was more of an extended setup for the final episode.

'Black Rainbow,' on the other hand, had more zing, although some of the final threads were a bit convoluted. It was not made clear what Warren was trying to do originally with the canisters. If she wanted to stop Zona from releasing the toxins, then why not just do nothing at all. And why did she believe Dr. Teller wanted to stop the apocalypse, he is part of Zona, after all.

For a show like Z Nation, however, it is sometimes best to ignore the means and enjoy the ends. And what a cliffhanger the show left us at.

There are now many questions to be answered for next season. How will Warren survive being stuck in the drone as it releases its toxins? What does Black Rainbow mean for the world and for Team Bite Mark? What in the blue hell is up with poor Murphy who has turned red? Keith Allen just can't get away from the makeup room. Who is this unseen enemy we saw earlier in the season and where is Red, Addy, and Sun Mei? Also, what is up with the mad Z's?

Murphy and Doc watching Black Rainbow in the concluding scenes, with the latter putting on his cool sunglasses, was a nice shot at the end of the episode. And to add humour, it was funny to see Sarge affectionately jumping at 10K after asking if this is the end of the world. Though it does beg the question of what this means for Red? I still don't understand why they brought her back, only to make her go missing for a full season, again.

Season 4 in Review: A lot of what we saw this season felt like a setup for next year. The unseen enemy, New America, why the zombies are all evolving were threads that were left kind of dangling. In ways, it felt like an incomplete season and one that tried to pack too much in.

The season could have benefited from fleshing out some of the other stories by cutting out some of the stand alone episodes. The season started off strong, but how they built on those first few episodes in the middle of the season was a complete mess. They sort of made up for it these last two mildly entertaining episodes, but in retrospective, the season started off running only to fall flat on its face.

Nevertheless, it is safe to say that Z Nation has officially surpassed The Walking Dead in terms of quality. Just had to say.

Mt. Weather: 5/10
The Black Rainbow: 7/10
Season 4: 7/10

Van Helsing - 'Base Pair' Review

After a couple weeks away from our titular hero, 'Base Pair' reveals what Vanessa had been up to since she got abducted.

'Base Pair' was a rather tame episode as the mystery of who these people are, whether they are good or bad and what their intentions are, were slowly unraveled.

Abigail not being Vanessa's mom was predictable. She was too over the top kind and the reveal was too sudden for her to be who she claimed she was.

The predictability took away from the quality of the episode. Though 'Base Pair' did introduce viewers to some interesting antagonists, the imprisoned vamp included.

It is interesting how this Elder Vamp means so much in different ways to different groups. Dmitri and co worship him, the scientists want his DNA to find a cure, and Van Helsing and her team don't want him to rise up at all.

Season 2 has been a marked improvement over its debut season, thanks in large part to them finally exploring some mythos. 'Base Pair' did a solid job in furthering along that mythos, introducing us to some new intriguing villains, while also leaving Vanessa in quite the predicament. Can she really be dead!? Vanessa just can't seem to catch a break.

7.5/10

Happy - 'What Smiles are For' Review

This show would not work without the gravitas of actor Christopher Meloni as protagonist Nick Sax. Meloni plays the reluctant hero archetype to a tee, and this second episode of Syfy's new show did a great job in digging into Sax' fears as he runs away from the town instead of helping Happy find his daughter.

The humour was hit or miss. The Jerry Springer segments were a bit too much, but some humour that did work was watching Happy turn to a poker addict as he helped Sax win.

Meloni plays well off Patton Oswalt's superficially cheerful Happy. The moment when the imaginary friend confronts Sax about his fears, telling him he is as much imaginary as he is, was a well done scene.

The episode ended on a high with Sax realizing his cowardice and picking up a sad Happy as he heads back into town.

Happy! should not work, and it is definitely not for everyone, but for a dark comedy, this second episode did a solid job on building on its entertaining premiere.

8.5/10

Superstition - 'Echoes of My Mind' Review

'Echoes of my Mind' picked up right where 'Dr. Dredge M.D.' left off with Calvin in the Infernos captivity.

A large chunk of the episode occurred within Calvin's mind as the Dredge manipulated his dreams to get him to activate his ring, with the ultimate goal of bringing more Inferno's into the world.

The plot worked against the episode rather than in favour. Dreams work best when there is some exploration of character and/or a strong emotional theme to attach to.

Unfortunately, most of Calvin's dreams were weird for the sake of being weird and not well written at all, especially in terms of making us feel for the torment that Calvin felt from his mistake(s) in Afghanistan.

The other half of the episode was a bit more tolerable. It was cool to see Papa Hastings teaming up with May to rescue Calvin, and then May breaking off to save the townspeople at the fair.

It was a surprise to see James (Joaquin Montes) show up. The half inferno, half human is a strong supporting character and one who is wasted away in his very brief appearances.

The mayor being an Inferno was predictable. It looks like he will be taking over the main antagonist role from the Dredge, at least temporarily, that of whom has seemed to have met his demise this episode before cornily declaring that we have not seen the last of him.

On a side note, anyone else get Green Lantern vibes from the scene when Calvin used the ring to defeat the Dredge? A powerful ring that emits green light is just way to similar to the popular DC Comics hero. Couldn't the writers have come up with something more original?

This was one of the weaker episodes of the season, in large part due to the fast forward-able time spent in Calvin's head. However, the episode did move the story forward in an intriguing direction now that the show has established the power of the ring, as Green Lantern-ish as it may be, as well as introducing viewers to a new antagonist in the mayor.

6/10

Ghost Wars - 'The Pain Connection' Review

'The Pain Connection' refers to the connection that these creatures from the pods share in feeling what each other are feeling.

The episode focused mainly on Reverend Dan as a one man army confronting Sophia, Abigail and Paolo, after unsuccessfully trying to convince the townsfolk of the evil within them.

Vincent D'Onforio has pretty much carried not just this episode, but the entire show. His character has had the deepest exploration from his role in Roman's mothers death to his failed exorcism.

The reverend is a man who is supposed to be a bringer of hope to a town in desperate need of it, but instead he is a man weighed down by a crap ton of guilt and regret. It makes for a very interesting character, if not a bit trope-y.

The reverend's argument with Daphne about religion vs. science, as well as, his demands to burn Paolo's body, shows a man who is desperate to do good, but yet, he just can't seem to catch a break. In this episode we see Reverend Dan pushed to the brink of sanity, and so his death, though was unexpected, was bound to happen.

It was an emotional moment when Roman reads the letter the Reverend leaves for him. It is clear Reverend Dan felt he failed at his job, but yet he hopes the young clairvoyant, Roman, the object of his biggest regret, can be that hope bringer.

'The Pain Connection' was a strong character episode for Reverend Dan and actor D'Onforio. Now, it's time for him to go back filming Daredevil.

Marvel Rising - New Animation Franchise Launching with Animated Film

Thanks to sam for the heads up.

Key voice cast includes Dove Cameron, Chloe Bennet, Tyler Posey, Kim Raver and BooBoo Stewart.

Marvel Entertainment announced today, “Marvel Rising,” a brand-new, multi-platform animation franchise starring the next generation of Marvel heroes set to launch in 2018. The program will launch with six, four-minute digital shorts that spotlight Spider-Gwen with her new secret moniker, Ghost-Spider, and introduce audiences to the world of “Marvel Rising.” Following the shorts, a feature-length animated film, “Marvel Rising: Secret Warriors” will premiere later that year. Distribution partners for the content to be announced at a later date.

Meet the characters and all-star voice actors behind the all-new franchise “Marvel Rising” above.

The content features an all-star line-up of voice talent including Dove Cameron, Chloe Bennet, Tyler Posey, BooBoo Stewart, Kathreen Khavari, Milana Vayntrub, Cierra Ramirez, Kamil McFadden, Skai Jackson, Kim Raver, Ming-Na Wen, Steven Weber, and Dee Bradley Baker among others. Future stories and content are also being developed across Marvel’s digital and publishing platforms and will be announced at a later date.

“Marvel Rising: Secret Warriors” is a long-anticipated event, bringing together Marvel’s newest and beloved characters that have garnered major fan excitement over the last few years. Powered teens Ms. Marvel, Squirrel Girl, Quake, Patriot, America Chavez, and Inferno join forces as an unlikely, but formidable crew of aspiring heroes. When a threat no one could have expected bears down on the Marvel Universe, this ragtag, untrained band of teens have no choice but to rise together and prove to the world that sometimes the difference between a “hero” and “misfit” is just in the name.

“Marvel characters are so relatable because they live in our world and face the same challenges we do. So I’m very excited that our Marvel Rising team of heroes is so inclusive, reflecting characters with different backgrounds, particularly a set of strong female leads that our young audience can connect with,” said Cort Lane, Marvel’s Senior Vice President of Animation & Family Entertainment.

Sana Amanat, Marvel’s Director of Content & Character Development, added, “This project is unlike anything we’ve done before—from featuring the rising and fan-favorite stars of the Marvel Universe, to a visually distinct animation style, this is a groundbreaking animated event. It’s an action-packed adventure, full of comedy, heart and powerful messages for every kind of Marvel fan.”

Meet the characters behind “Marvel Rising”:

Gwen Stacy aka Ghost-Spider (formerly Spider Gwen) voiced by Dove Cameron (“Descendants,” “Hairspray Live”) – a free spirited teen who found her calling to be a super hero after being bitten by a radioactive spider and gaining spider-like powers. As Ghost-Spider, she aids those in need, but has to keep her alter-ego a secret from her father, Captain George Stacy, who sees Ghost-Spider as more of a menace than a hero.

Daisy Johnson aka Quake voiced by Chloe Bennet (“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” “Nashville”) – a leading agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. whose tendency for rule-breaking gets her into trouble now and then. Daisy befriends the young group of heroes and through them discovers how to become a better leader. She can generate powerful vibrational waves, which produce effects similar to earthquakes.

Dante Pertuz aka Inferno voiced by Tyler Posey (“Teen Wolf,” “Lincoln Heights”) – a brooding, dark loner on the run. Dante has the power of pyrokinesis, which makes him capable of generating flames – however, he is not fully in control of his fiery abilities. It’s a thin line between good guy and villain for the unpredictable Inferno.

Victor Kohl aka Exile voiced by BooBoo Stewart (“Descendants,” “The Twilight Saga”) – a charming, handsome, and troublesome young Inhuman whose quest for superiority places him into the wrong crowd. He can use Darkforce energy to create weapons and portals that allow him to teleport.

Kamala Khan aka Ms. Marvel voiced by Kathreen Khavari (“Marvel’s Avengers Assemble,” “Big Little Lies”) – a devoted fan of Super Heroes, especially of her mentor Captain Marvel; she is determined that she too can be a great hero! If only she’d be taken seriously. Kamala is equipped with metamorphic powers that allow her to stretch, enlarge, or shrink her overall size, parts of her body, or alter her physical appearance. She is especially fond of “embiggening” her fists.

Doreen Green aka Squirrel Girl voiced by Milana Vayntrub (“Marvel’s New Warriors,” “This Is Us”) – the uber-positive, hilarious best friend and teammate of Ms. Marvel. With advanced computer skills, enhanced strength, agility, durability, and senses of a squirrel, Doreen (along with her squirrel partner, Tippy Toe!), is primed and ready to become a successful hero.

America Chavez voiced by Cierra Ramirez (“The Fosters,” “The Secret Life of an America Teenager”) – a strong, independent young hero whose painful past drives her to reject leadership and remain a loner. America’s powers include superhuman strength, speed, and durability, plus the ability to fly.

Rayshaun Lucas aka Patriot voiced by Kamil McFadden (“K.C. Undercover,” “Grown Ups 2”) – a natural born leader who is quick to leap into action to impress his colleagues at S.H.I.E.L.D. Rayshaun strives to live up to Captain America’s legacy with integrity, honesty, and order above all. His skills include heightened strength, speed, stamina, and durability.

Gloria “Glory” Grant voiced by Skai JacksFron (“Bunk’d,” “Jessie”) – Gloria, or ‘Glory,’ is Gwen Stacy’s friend and member of their garage band “The Emm-Jays.” Gloria is a smart, hard-working girl that genuinely cares for Gwen, but has felt a distance growing between them ever since their friend, Kevin, was murdered. When being casual, Gloria’s known to be funny, sarcastic and sassy.

Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel voiced by Kim Raver (“Grey’s Anatomy,” “24”) – a bold leader who doesn’t sugar-coat and is guided by a strong sense of duty and honor. She’s the ultimate inspiration for our band of misfit heroes. She is equipped with superhuman strength, can fly at high speeds, and can project intense energy blasts.

Hala voiced by Ming-Na Wen (“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” “Mulan”) – Hala is a Kree Accuser bent on galactic domination. She’ll go to any length or treacherous means to achieve what she, and the entire Kree race, wants: Power. Hala is cold, cryptic and nefarious, often challenging those who try to oppose her.

Captain George Stacy voiced by Steven Weber (“13 Reasons Why,” “NCIS: New Orleans”) – Chief of the NYPD and Gwen Stacy’s loving, but fiercely protective father. Captain Stacy is a very disciplined, hard-working man that will stop at nothing to obtain justice – who unfortunately sees Ghost-Spider as a menace and a threat to society.

Lockjaw and Tippy Toe are voiced by Dee Bradley Baker (“Star Wars Rebels,” “Gravity Falls”). Two lovable and heroic sidekicks: Lockjaw is Kamala’s trusty, teleporting mutt and Tippy Toe is Doreen’s partner in crime and best squirrel friend.

“Marvel Rising: Secret Warriors” is executive produced by Joe Quesada, Dan Buckley, Cort Lane, and Eric Radomski; co-executive produced by Stan Lee, Sana Amanat, and Marsha Griffin. The film and shorts were written by Mairghread Scott. Alfred Gimeno served as supervising director.
Sarah Wayne Callies will make her directorial debut on the ninth episode of USA‘s “Colony” season 3, in which she also stars, Variety has learned exclusively. “After a career spent inspired by the few female directors I’ve worked with and hungry for more, I’ve realized the most creative and exciting solution was to become one myself,” Callies shares. “The support from my ‘Colony’ family has been beautiful, and the generosity of mentorship from my director friends has been humbling.

23:00 - City On A Hill - Jonathan Tucker Joins Cast; Kevin Dunn to Recur in Showtime Drama Pilot

Jonathan Tucker (Kingdom) is set as a series regular and Kevin Dunn (Veep) will recur in City on a Hill, Showtime’s drama pilot executive produced by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon. Michael Cuesta (Homeland, American Assassin) is directing and executive producing. He replaces Gavin O’Connor, who initially was set for the role but pulled out in early September after he signed on to direct Suicide Squad 2.

Written by Chuck MacLean (Boston Strangler) based on an original idea by Affleck and MacLean, City on a Hill is set in Boston in the early ’90s when the city was rife with violent criminals emboldened by local law-enforcement agencies, in which corruption and racism was the norm, until it all suddenly changed. The drama is a fictional account of what was called the “Boston Miracle.” The change agent is District Attorney Decourcy Ward (Aldis Hodge), who comes from Brooklyn and forms an unlikely alliance with Jackie Rhodes (Kevin Bacon), a corrupt yet venerated FBI veteran who is deeply invested in maintaining the status quo. Together they take on a family of armored car robbers from Charlestown in a case that grows to encompass and eventually upend Boston’s citywide criminal justice system.

Tucker will play Frankie Ryan, the older brother of Jimmy (Mark O’Brien) and his keeper most of the time. On the surface, he looks like a normal working-class guy in Boston, married with kids. However, Frankie also is the leader of the Two Saints gang that specializes in armored car robberies.

Dunn will play Nathan Rey, an ADA in Suffolk County. He is very politically savvy and is the boss of DeCourcy Ward.
EXCLUSIVE: Just days after Berlin Station had its Season 2 finale, Epix today are giving the Olen Steinhauer-created spy series a third season.

Season 3 of Berlin Station looks set to start streaming on Epix in late 2018 or early 2019, I hear. However, it is not yet set in stone who is returning from the Richard Armitage, Michelle Forbes, Leland Orser, Ashley Judd, Richard Jenkins and Rhys Ifans starring series or if EP Brad Winters will be back as showrunner. With the German capital as its primary backdrop, a Season 3 production start is being penciled in for around spring next year.

“We couldn’t be more thrilled to announce this news as we close on a spectacular second season of Berlin Station,” said Jocelyn Diaz, Epix EVP of Original Programming on Wednesday of the CIA drama. “This past season was timely, significant, and almost eerily prescient in its mirroring of real-life events this year, and we are looking forward to working with the talented teams at Paramount TV and Anonymous Content on another installment.”

03:30 - MOVIES: Detective Pikachu - Kathryn Newton to Star in Live-Action Pokemon Adaptation

Kathryn Newton, who appeared in HBO's Big Little Lies, has nabbed the female lead for Legendary’s live-action movie adaptation of Pokemon.

The Get Down star Justice Smith was picked as the male lead for the movie based on the gaming franchise and the project, titled Detective Pikachu, just wrapped an intense session of reading and testing actresses who would appear opposite him.

Stranger Things star Natalia Dyer, Haley Lu Richardson (who broke out earlier this year with M. Night Shyamalan’s Split) and 13 Reasons Why star Katherine Langford were also in the running for the role.

Newton, who had a big fall with roles in Lady Bird and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri — both movies generating major awards buzz — is now in negotiations.

The concept of Pokemon, which was initially a card-collecting game as well as anime, sees players acting as trainers who collect cute but powerful monsters called Pokemon in order to compete in battle tournaments.

Pikachu is a species of Pokemon, while Detective Pikachu the character is a peculiar sort from the Pikachu set, a self-styled investigator who befriends a human boy and together they solve mysteries.

The role Newton nabbed is that of Lucy, a sassy journalist who goes on an adventure with the boy, played by Smith, and Pikachu, who will be a motion-capture creation for the movie. (In the Pokemon universe, Lucy also has her own Pokemon sidekick, a Psyduck. It is not known if he will appear in the movie.)
Production is due to start mid-January in London with Alex Hirsch and Nicole Perlman writing the latest draft. Universal will handle distribution of the live-action film outside Japan; Toho will handle distribution in Japan.

MOVIES: Daphne and Velma - Scooby-Doo Spinoff Starring Sarah Jeffery & Sarah Gilman Announced by Warner Bros.

Daphne and Velma, the teen-girl sleuths from “Scooby-Doo,” are getting their own origin story in a live-action feature-length film from Jennifer and Ashley Tisdale’s production banner.

“Daphne and Velma” is being produced by the Tisdale sisters’ Blondie Girl Productions and Warner Bros. Television Group’s Blue Ribbon Content digital studio. Sarah Jeffery (“Shades of Blue”) and Sarah Gilman (“Last Man Standing”) star in the title roles as Daphne and Velma, respectively.

The film is currently shooting in Atlanta and is set to be released by Warner Bros. Home Entertainment in 2018. The studio isn’t disclosing distribution details at this point.

“Daphne and Velma” tells the story of Daphne Blake and Velma Dinkley before they team up with Scooby and the rest of the Mystery Inc. gang. The mystery-solving teens are best friends but have only met online — until Daphne transfers to Velma’s school, Ridge Valley High, stocked with high-tech gadgetry by the school’s benefactor, tech billionaire Tobias Bloom. While their peers vie for a coveted internship at Bloom’s company, Daphne and Velma try to uncover the reason why the school’s brightest students are disappearing — only to emerge again in a zombie-fied state.

“Blondie Girl is committed to telling stories from a female perspective and we could not be more thrilled to give Daphne and Velma their own story,” Ashley and Jennifer Tisdale said in a joint statement. “It’s so exciting to partner with Warner Home Entertainment and Blue Ribbon Content to introduce a new generation to the smart, charismatic, fearless females that we all know and love.”

For Warner Bros.’ part, “We wanted to give the audience a new take on these two familiar faces, who are fan favorites in the Scooby-Doo universe,” said Peter Girardi, EVP of Blue Ribbon Content and EVP of alternative programming of Warner Bros. Animation.

In 'Through the Looking Glass' May finds herself in a mirror universe that looks awfully similar to the one Mary Winchester and Lucifer are stuck in in Supernatural.

This was a much needed episode to further along the relationship between Calvin and both, May and their daughter, Garvey. In fact, this was the first episode where we really got to see everyone work together sans Papa Hastings and James, and the chemistry between them all was really strong right off the bat.

Calvin especially has started to come into his own - working tactically to bring May back home, while earning his daughter's trust, or at least more of it.

There was also some quirky humour ala the beginning scene when the Hastings debate over whether to hold a funeral for a vile racist, and then the son who drops by the ceremony only to piss in his urn.

'Through the Looking Glass' was not a stand out episode, but it did its job in building the relationship between Calvin and his ex and daughter, and developing the chemistry between what is left of the Hastings household.

It is sad Syfy does not have any faith in Superstition as the show continues to be a fun alternative to Supernatural over on the CW.
