And so the 2023 Series Competition comes to end. We have a ninth different winner...

Congratulations to This Is Us, which wins the competition at the fifth attempt, having previously only reached as far as the third round (in 2022). Once again I am fascinated by the way this competition panned out, with 29 debutants, and so many of the shows in the final stages being finished ones.
Here's the full ranking of every show to ever compete across 13 editions. Our 29 debutants this year takes the overall tally to 273.
I hope everyone enjoyed the competition!

A few people to thank. Firstly DarkUFO for his continued support throughout the competition. Thanks to CJ for again designing the trophy graphic above. And a continued thanks to Rendy - who I'm not sure frequents the site any longer - for his wonderfully clean and easy to use design of the competition bracket many years ago.

But most importantly, thank you to you, the fans and readers of SpoilerTV. Without you, no one would nominate their shows, no one would vote in the polls, and there would therefore be no competition to run. Your continued involvement keeps things like this going. Whether you voted in every poll or just one, whether your show finished first or 64th, whether you've read the site since 2007 or you've just discovered it through this competition - thank you for being here and being a part of it all.

And if you have only just discovered the site, stick around! We keep you up to date with all the latest news for all of your favourite shows, alongside terrific feature pieces such Performer of the Month, plus our excellent reviewers pen their thoughts across the TV landscape.

Congratulations again to This Is Us. Can it repeat that success next year?

Only time will tell.

For now, it is our champion.

And until next year, namaste...

We started with 64. Today, we have just two. This Is Us and Sons of Anarchy. This Is Us was eliminated in the third round last year, marking its best performance. For Sons of Anarchy, this is already an extraordinary achievement, having featured only in 2014 and 2015, and having never previously won a tie in this competition.

Whatever happens, this has been a fabulous competition for both shows. But only one can take the crown. And remember: the final, and the third-place play-off (Animal Kingdom vs. White Collar), takes place over 48 hours.

1) A pair of shows will go into battle in a poll, where after exactly 48 hours, the leading show will win the battle and will progress into the next round. Each poll will open at 12pm ET on a given day.
2) Vote for your favourite and spread the word with your friends & fans.
3) One vote per person per poll.
4) Comment on what you voted for on in the comments below.
5) Have fun. This is a friendly & competitive competition. Please do not start attacking other fans or fangroups in the comments, because this really isn't what this competition is about.

We're down to the last eight shows!

And my mind has been completely blown by said quarter-finalists. For the first time ever in the competition's history, all eight quarter-finalists are finished shows. Not a single one of them is a current show.

I find this utterly incredible, and totally fascinating. I often worry that this competition, and the others that we run, have the risk of becoming a procession of whatever the hottest show of the month is. But this, combined with the fact that the only previous champion to appear this year was Supernatural (eliminated in round one), it reminds me that there are so many shows out there that are loved by so many people. It's great to see.

Now, into the polls...
64 polls later and we have a winner! Congratulations to This Is Us fans for voting Rebecca Pearson to the top. While not the blowout that was last year’s finale, Rebecca retained the lead throughout and ended with 58% of the vote. With this, Rebecca becomes the 12th winner of the Character Cup, improving on her third place win last year. Way to go, Rebecca fans! To become the winner, Rebecca had to defeat Kamila Khan, Jessica Knight, Dexter Morgan, Jax Teller, Charlie Nicoletti, and Deran Cody. Congratulations to all This Is Us fans!

In second place is Deran Cody in his first time in the Character Cup. Impressive debut! With a second place win, Deran is still eligible to compete next year. Will 2023 be his year? Congratulations to Animal Kingdom fans for a well-played contest. In third place, Charlie Nicoletti barely beat out Olivia Benson, who placed second last year. This is Charlie’s first year in the Cup. Both characters remain eligible to be in the Cup next year, also.

Our breakout character this year was Sister Beatrice from Warrior Nun, who jumped 51 ranks to land in the #9 spot. What a feat! Over in the Favorite TV Dad mini-contest, Monkey Dragon from One Piece reigned supreme with Uncle Iroh from Avatar: The Last Airbender placing second. Marty Deeks from NCIS: LA took third with Danny Tanner from Full House in fourth.

As the winner, Rebecca Pearson joins Jack Shephard from LOST, Dean Winchester and Castiel from Supernatural, Root and Sameen Shaw from Person of Interest, Alex Danvers from Supergirl, Lucifer Morningstar from Lucifer, Temo Lopez from Mi Marido Tiene Más Familia, Lexa from The 100, Malcolm Bright from Prodigal Son, and Scylla Ramshorn from Motherland: Fort Salem in our Hall of Retired Winners. Congratulations to the This Is Us, Animal Kingdom, The Company You Keep, Law & Order: SVU, and all other fandoms who supported their favorites.

Prediction Contest:

By earning a whopping 120 points, Hard is the winner of this year’s prediction contest. Congratulations! You rock! You earn the all-important bragging rights this year. Pavelas (98 points), Clueless (93), and Prpleight (91), round out the top 4. Awesome job predicting all around in a year when former favorites didn’t make it past round 3.

Stay Tuned: Favorite Episode Competition and Favorite Show Contest

The summer fun is not over here at SpoilerTV. We still have 2 contests remaining. Up next is the Favorite Episode Competition, which normally debuts in June preceding the Cup. Nominations for it should open soon. Then we end with our biggest summer contest for Favorite Show. This is our main hiatus event so you don't want to miss it either. Until next year, I officially call this the close of the 2023 Character Cup. Thanks everyone for another successful year!

Thanks!

The Character Cup does not happen without the support of so many people. First and foremost, thanks to Andy for running SpoilerTV and hosting this contest every summer. If you haven’t been to SpoilerTV before the Character Cup, I urge you to stick around and try it out. Not only are hundreds of shows covered but the people who make up the STV community are knowledgeable, thoughtful, passionate, respectful, and eager to discuss. You will not find better, balanced conversation about TV anywhere online. It is my privilege to have been a part of the STV team for 13 years now.

Everyone knows that the TV Talk Topics are my favorite part of the Cup and you didn’t disappoint. I loved talking TV with you this year. I appreciate everyone who shared their thoughts, whether it was every time, just once, or somewhere in between. You are the reason why so many people are drawn to SpoilerTV. A special thanks, also, to everyone who nominated topics. I’m sorry if we didn’t get to yours, but we have a great mix of topics to start us out next year.

Finally, a huge thank you to everyone who participated in any capacity. There is no contest without you. I appreciate your nominating, voting, discussing, mini-contest ideas, TV Talk Topics, spreading the word through social media, and sharing your thoughts. Once again, I had a blast during this contest and I can’t wait to see you next year for the 2024 Character Cup. It's one of my favorite parts of summer and a joy to participate with you.

Until next year, may your favorite shows not be canceled and your favorite characters have amazing storylines. Thanks for being a part of the Character Cup!

Welcome to Round 4! We are down to the Elite Eight. Round 3 saw some mighty characters fall and some very close polls with Jax Teller winning by a mere 4 votes. Every vote counts in these rounds so don’t forget to pass the word about your favorites. When once it seemed like there was a clear forerunner, now that’s not true. It’s anyone’s game.

Today also starts the mini-contest and it is a surprise in every way. I have never heard of the most nominated character or his show. Who knew that out of 8 spots, two of them would be animated? Add in multiple older shows and this mini-contest has just as much variety as the Cup this year.

Over in the prediction contest, my brackets have completely busted. Only Lucy remains of my final 4 picks. Going by potential score, Hard is in the lead with Wishin’, Amber Lacy, and Pavelas right behind. Congrats! If you are just joining the Cup, please take time to read the rules in the link below. Happy voting!

We’re now down to the Sweet Sixteen as we start round 3. Unlike the previous rounds, round 2B did have some close polls, which makes things more exciting. The mini-contest nominations will close momentarily and that competition will begin in the next round. Even if your favorites are out, I urge you to check back for the mini-contest and, of course, the TV Talk Topic.

Over in the prediction contest, our leaderboard has changed. Hard is now in the lead with 48 points, with Pavelas, Nick 49, and me right behind. Congratulations to all! This is the point where my brackets start busting all over, and with Hailey Upton out, that's one fourth gone for me.

If you are just joining the contest, please check out the rules link below. Remember one vote per person per poll. Good luck and happy voting!

With round 1 behind us, we’ve gone from 64 to 32 characters left in the Cup: Rebecca Pearson (second highest votes), Jessica Knight, Dexter Morgan, Marty Deeks, Demetri Alexopoulos, Allie Marjan, Jax Teller, Hailey Upton, Charlie Nicoletti, Ted Lasso, EZ Reyes, Juliet Higgins, Sister Beatrice (highest votes), Samantha Maroun, Nancy Drew, Lucy Tara, Abby Walker, Sheldon Cooper, Soldier Boy, Dwight Scrute, Olivia Benson, Felicity Smoak, Buffy Summers, Cassie Perez, Deran Cody, Bode Donovan, Sam Winchester, Loki, Clark Kent/Superman, Spencer Reid, Elliot Stabler, and Iris West-Allen.

I hope some of your favorites are still in. If not, it’s time to start thinking about the mini-contest. Our theme this year will be TV Dads, so think about those TV dads that inspired you, made you laugh, made you awww, or made you wish you were part of their family. We’re using the term “dad’ loosely so father figures count. Just remember that no character that has a TV show still in the contest at round 3 will be eligible for the mini-contest. Nominations can be found here.

Over in the prediction contest, I am shockingly winning so far but have no fear, this can change rapidly. In second place is Hard and Tylen with 24 points each and then Pao Andrade and Leigh with 23 points. It is still very much anybody’s contest. I will be out of reach for most of the day but if you have any questions put them in the comments section below and I’ll answer as soon as I can. Have a great day and happy voting!

Let’s do this! Welcome everyone to the 2023 Character Cup! This is a special one for me since it is my 10th year running the Cup. To ensure that everybody has a good time, please read the rules below. It is important that everyone be kind and fair to make it the most fun for everyone.

Below is a link to Character Cup posts and a current set of brackets is at the bottom of the post each day. Most importantly, the daily TV Talk Topic will be found above the polls. We have a new TV Talk Topic every day and all are encouraged to participate. It's my favorite part of the contest. I can’t wait to talk TV with you!

The Character Cup goes by very quickly so check SpoilerTV every day to vote, check the prediction standings, and participate in daily discussions. For those with underdog characters, get the word out now because round 1 generally has fewer votes, so it is easier for an upset. With no further ado, I announce the 2023 Character Cup, open! Happy voting!

Earlier Posts
Prediction Contest

Round will end at approximately 1:15 am CST on Tuesday, June 20.

Character Cup Rules:

1. Don't take it too seriously! Have fun. Discuss. Play nice.

2. Cheaters suck! - Only one vote per person per poll please. While we do our best to keep the contest running smoothly, it's up to each person to follow the rules. The Cup is just a fun little piece of internet fluff. It won't get anyone's show renewed or un-cancelled. It has zero effect on ratings, so there is zero reason to cheat. All cheaters do is disrespect themselves, their fandom, their show, the actors, and this community. Just don't.

3. Focus on characters, not people. Talking about what you like and dislike about a character is encouraged. Going after actors or fans is not.

4. The aliens have not landed. There's no conspiracy here. I will do my best to keep the contest running smoothly, but I make mistakes. I apologize in advance for any technical difficulties, spelling errors, and general absentmindedness. Let me know and I'll fix it.

5. Comments are life. As you anxiously await the end of hiatus, why not distract yourself with a little TV Talk? Each day is a new topic so even if your favorites are out, you can still discuss. While the Cup is just a silly little distraction, the conversation here dives deep, so jump on in.

6. Nuts and Bolts - All polls are active for around 24 hours. Winners advance to the next round. In the case of a tie, both characters go to the next round. New polls should go up every day and polls may overlap each other. Any questions? Ask away in the comments.

TV Talk Topic: Missed It By That Much

There are a lot of awesome characters and unfortunately not all of them could get in. Below are the characters who just missed getting into the contest so it seems fair to begin our TV Talk by honoring them.

Note - Inspired by All in the Family getting in (the first Character Cup show to debut before I was born), I’m retitling our regular opening TV Talk Topic “Missed It By That Much.” It’s the catchphrase of Maxwell Smart, the 60’s comedy character from Get Smart. My brother used to love that show!

Characters Who “Missed It By That Much”:
Gary Mendez (A Million Little Things), Maggie Bell (FBI), Crystal Tyler (Heels), Sara Lance (Legends of Tomorrow), Stiles Stilinski (Teen Wolf), John Winchester (The Winchesters), Leo Fitz (Agents of SHIELD), Cordelia Chase (Angel), Will Halstead (Chicago Med), Robin McCall (The Equalizer), Remy Scott (FBI: Most Wanted), Harvey Dent (Gotham Knights), Miranda Bailey (Grey's Anatomy), Jessica Jones (Jessica Jones), Eliot Spencer (Leverage), Dr. Lauren Bloom (New Amsterdam), Dan Fielding (Night Court), Mabel Mora (Only Murders in the Building), Kaz Brekker (Shadow and Bone), Alec Lightwood (Shadowhunters), Roman Roy (Succession), Bellamy Blake (The 100), Amos Burton (The Expanse), Keyleth of the Air Ashari (The Legend of Vox Machina), Negan (The Walking Dead), Dana Scully (The X-Files), and Dale Cooper (Twin Peaks).

Shows That Split the Vote:
Agents of SHIELD, Chicago Med, Doctor Who, FBI, Game of Thrones, Grey’s Anatomy, A Million Little Things, Shadow and Bone, Succession, Teen Wolf, The 100, The Winchesters, and Yellowjackets.

Characters whose shows/actors are represented by another character:
Cordell Walker (Walker), Derek Hale (Teen Wolf), Kate Whistler (NCIS: Hawai’i), Sylvie Brett (Chicago Fire), Kim Burgess (Chicago P.D.), Angela Lopez (The Rookie), Adam Ruzek (Chicago PD), Walter White (Breaking Bad), Kelly Severide (Chicago Fire), Thomas Magnum (Magnum PI), Calian (Walker: Independence), Elle (The Last of Us), Athena Grant (911), TK Strand (911: Lone Star), Beau Alan (Big Sky), Hank Voight (Chicago PD), Johnny Lawrence (Cobra Kai), Gabriela Perez (Fire Country), Nick Torres (NCIS), and Deputy Augustus (Walker: Independence).

With the initial ranking list set, it's time for the 2023 Character Cup prediction contest. For those new to the Character Cup, this is your chance to guess which characters will win each round. I highly urge you to enter because it's a lot of fun and absolutely free. The prediction contest is about who you think will win, NOT who you want to win. However, I have also created a wish list link so you can show who your favorites are in that one. If you have questions about either, please comment below. The prediction contest helps keep the Cup fun even if you don't have any characters in the polls that day.

Below you will find the official brackets and a ranked list of characters that made it into the Cup. This year, Rebecca Pearson had by far the most nominations - more than double any other nominee. Having made it to third place last year, will this be the year that she prevails?

Like last year, we are using Challonge to run the contest. You will have to put in an email address to create your bracket, but no one can see it. Feel free to make up a totally bogus address. The system does send out an e-mail announcing the winners at the end but I will post that info here, too. You have until 11 am CST on Sunday, June18 to complete your predictions. When the prediction phase ends, the Character Cup will begin. Good luck! Enter the contest through the link below:

Prediction Contest Here
Wish List Contest Here

Prediction Rules:

1. Only one prediction bracket per person. If you would like to also do a wish bracket, you can use the other link. (A wish bracket is where you say which characters you would like to win, not who you think will win.) The prediction bracket will be updated every day, but the wish list will only be updated at the end of the contest.
2. When titling your prediction, please use your Disqus or SpoilerTV name. If you do not have either, please use a name instead of something clever to identify yourself. That makes it easier to post who’s winning so far.
3. Your predictions can be edited up until predictions close.
4. All predictions must be finalized by 11 am CST on Sunday, June 18 to be eligible. Once the contest starts, no other predictions will be accepted.
5. The grand prize winner wins…bragging rights. Hey, I'm a teacher; I can't afford cool prizes. Last year, Luana Arturi won. Good luck to all!

Initial Ranking List:

Welcome to the fifth installment of Pitch Your Show, covering shows from O-So. Tomorrow will be the last installment. Previous pitches are linked below, along with the nomination form for the Character Cup. (Yes, this is a shameless plug.) Again, thank you to everyone who helped with the pitches. To keep the articles shorter and more readable, all pitches were edited for length, clarity, and grammar. Nominations were also limited to 3 per show with a couple very popular shows having more. I am truly sorry if your nomination is not in here. Know that I appreciate your time and pitches. Making the choice of what went in was difficult. After all sections are posted, I will include a link to the original spreadsheet so you can read them all in their unedited entirety.
2 seasons, 16 episodes
Netflix

Netflix's The OA is unlike almost any show on TV right now, with many comparing it to Stranger Things. Really though, this genre-bending, metaphysical foray sits somewhere between the abstract and captivating visuals and tones of Legion and Bad Robot's multiple universe redemption story, Fringe. The story starts out with an adult blind girl named Prairie, who’s been missing for seven years, only to finally return home with sight. She sets out to find 5 unlikely socially dysfunctional band of outcasts that she begins to tell her strange, almost unbelievable tale to. It ends up being, in part, about information gained from Near Death Experiences, and how she needs their help to save her other friends who are being held captive. It sounds simple enough, until it isn't. Its second season, which just aired this spring, takes everything to brand new levels of strange from flowers growing out of people's brains to telekinetic aquatic life to a puzzle-mystery-house! If you're looking for something with moody tones, great mythology and visuals, unlikely heroes, metaphysical quandaries, and a feeling of conspiracy, but still has something nuanced and is VERY character driven, this is SO the series for you! 3 seasons, 39 episodes
Netflix, Pop

Based on the 70’s CBS sitcom about a white family and their next door neighbour, this reimagined Netflix reboot is about a Cuban-American family and their next door neighbour. This is one of the best and most inclusive shows airing currently. Tackling every possible touchy subject with ease and reverence, and without being too preachy or akin to A Very Special Episode, One Day at a Time is such a timely show. Don't get me wrong, the show is also immensely hilarious and the chemistry between the actors and these wholesome characters is off the charts. Each and every single one of them is Emmy award worthy - oh wait, Rita Moreno already has an EGOT. If 'laugh tracks' bother you, fear not. The show is performed in front of a live audience, who become their own character in the show and react to appropriate things in the manner that you'd expect. They're there to make you feel at home. After the show was brutally cancelled by Netflix, PopTV has swooped in to save it. So now you have the time to binge it, and to do so, I'd simply say, take it...one day at a time. (LauraLoo)

Netflix has an unfortunate habit of cancelling shows after three seasons and I was fully ready to turn this into a #SaveODAAT pitch – but then a miracle happened, and Pop TV saved it just after I had reluctantly accepted its fate! If the show had ended its run there, it would have still given us three of the most important, relevant and best seasons of comedic prowess around, tackling topical subjects that need to be tackled both big and small with care and respect whilst still providing plenty of laughs, but now there’s more and things look only set to get better. The more you spend time with the Alvarez family, the more you grow to love the character dynamics. The brilliant cast of Rita Moreno, Justina Machado, Isabella Gomez and Marcel Ruiz ace every line delivery, making the Alvarez family feel all the more real and all the more believable, right at home in the modern age. Its consistency is also its biggest strength, with no weak episode out of the entire series, leading to highly emotional payoffs. It also boasts one of the best coming out stories on television. 4 seasons, 32 episodes
Hulu

Please Like Me was a fantastic Australian show dipping into a nice mixture of fun, lighthearted comedy and very emotional, hardcore drama. It dealt with a variety of serious issues and was always respectful when talking about them. Josh Thomas and Thomas Ward breathed so much life into this show. Josh is a comedian in real life and the show was based on his experiences with finding out he was gay later in life, the reactions to this, and more. He had a very creative and explosive way of getting his image onto the screen. PLM doesn't just have impeccable writing, the directing is beautiful as well. Most noteworthy is an episode from Season 2, where Josh and his mum take a camping trip and talk about their experiences. The scenery was breathtaking and the writing amazing. It's also funny to note that none of the characters have last names, but this doesn't take away from the great development that they received. The acting is flawless too; everyone delivered quality performances, especially Caitlin Stasey and Keegan Joyce. This show was charming, very smart, and is deserving of everyone's time. It's a great binge-watcher, and it ended well enough too. (LauraLoo)
1 season, 10 episodes
Freeform, Hulu

If you love mysteries, this show is for you. It’s set in a small, creepy town in the Pacific Northwest and the mystery begins after Nolan, a student of the prestigious Beacon Heights University, gets murdered. But that’s not all; his sister Taylor killed herself a year before the show started. The siblings were investigating on their own after they realized someone was using the campus security system to spy 24/7 on a select group of people for obscure reasons. Soon enough our three main characters and college students, the “perfectionists”, are in danger because Nolan’s murderer found all the horrible secrets Nolan knew about them that could ruin their perfect lives, and uses those to blackmail them. They need to find out who the killer is to save themselves. The show is based on the novel “The Perfectionists” by Sara Shepard and serves as a Pretty Little Liars spin-off, with returning original characters Alison DiLaurentis as the new teacher assistant and Mona Vanderwaal as a faculty staff member. In a time before Netflix, Prison Break was the most binge worthy show of its time. It always keeps you wanting more and guessing what will happen next. Michael Schofield commits armed robbery and gets thrown into Fox River Penitentiary, all part of his plan to break out his brother Lincoln, who is framed for a murder he did not commit. Once inside, Michael begins an elaborate, intricate plan to escape, recruiting inmates and earning the trust of the guards and warden all while he struggles with the one hitch in his plan - his budding feelings for Sara, a prison doctor who started off as part of his plan but becomes someone Michael genuinely cares for. Once on the outside, Michael discovers he and Lincoln are part of a government conspiracy of people who want then dead and they do what they can to avoid recapture and stay alive (The North Remembers)

Thank goodness for Ion TV. With the darkening of USA Network’s skies, I haven’t been able to find feel good, action shows like Burn Notice and White Collar very easily. Enter Private Eyes. It centers on Angie Everett, a PI, and Matt Shade, a former hockey player, played by Cindy Sampson (Supernatural) and Jason Priestley (Beverly Hills 90210). Set in Toronto, they track down answers with a dose of action and a lot of humor each week. There is an annoying “will they, won’t they” element to the show but it is packed with fun secondary characters that offsets it. Mostly though, they help people as they banter, making it a fun, easy breezy, summer show. Bonus points for using a remake of Hall and Oates' claptastic 80's classic for their theme song. Originally airing on FOX, Profit is one of those rare shows that dares to be different. This was the first time I’d watched a show where the main character, Jim Profit, was not a good guy. Jim Profit works for G&G, a multinational conglomerate that Jim has an abnormal attachment to. We come to find out that this attachment was formed at a young age because he was, basically, raised in a G&G cardboard shipping box. Each episode focuses on Profit's efforts to remove an obstacle from his path or to protect G&G in some way. More compelling than Profit’s devious schemes to remove or manipulate the people in his way was getting a peek behind the curtain into why Profit’s mind worked the way it did. His childhood abuse wasn’t limited to being kept in a cardboard box with only a television screen for mental stimulation. The show was ahead of its time. In the years to come, we would see shows like Dexter or The Sopranos become hits. (Prpleight)
Ramy is frequently laugh-out-loud funny, often unflinchingly honest, occasionally surreal, and always left me thinking about each episode for days after I watched. The series is loosely based on the life of creator/star Ramy Youssef and revolves around a 28-year-old Muslim man living with his parents in New Jersey, navigating the morals of his faith and the temptations of being a millennial. Particularly unique is that the series never treats the supporting characters as props, but rather often gives them their own episodes to shine. Ramy's sister, mother, father, and best friend Steve are all scene-stealers. Deeply introspective and affecting, Ramy is a unique series that pushes the envelope and gets more honest than most series dare to. I can't recommend this one enough. (Maximilian)

Remember the good old days when soapy, over-the-top, campy shows were allowed to unapologetically exist? Well, one show that contributed to that time was ABC’s “Revenge,” a four-season, soapy, mystery thriller, chronicling socialite Emily Thorne’s path of revenge as she avenges her father’s wrongful conviction and his ensuing death. Since most of this show takes place in the sunny, breezy Hamptons during the summer, this is the perfect show to binge throughout the summer while waiting for your fall TV to return. Revenge is addicting, fun, and thrilling, but also occasionally heartbreaking, dark, and twisted. Its two leading actresses, Emily VanCamp and Madeline Stowe, embody their characters, Emily Thorne and Victoria Grayson, expertly. Their characters’ rivalry is insanely delicious and indulging, as is Victoria’s inconsistent love-hate relationship with her husband Conrad. But beware, this show is soapy and unabashedly so. Its dialogue, twists and turns, and character moments have to be viewed through a particular lens, but you’re in for one heck of a ride. Believe me when I say that you will be hooked within the first ten minutes. Why? Well, you’ll have to check out the pilot to see! (Missions)

Rick and Morty is a sci-fi/action lover’s dream, disguised within a creative animated cartoon. Filled with Dan Harmon’s distinctive quippy dialogue and Justin Roiland’s signature voice acting, this show takes television to places it has never been before. It’s Futurama for a new generation. Follow along with Rick Sanchez, our pansexual, mentally-ill lead character, who has all the genius of Doc Brown, but all the misanthropy of Gregory House. He’ll take his grandson Morty Smith on crazy adventures through space, time, other planets, and other dimensions! The entire Smith family grounds the show towards believability, but it also uses them as a crux to show how maniacal Rick can get. It’s entertaining as hell, and each episode is refreshingly different. These characters grow and develop right before your eyes. Season 4 is set to air in November, so there’s plenty of time to binge it! There’s something in this show for everyone whether it’s the family dynamic you crave or the sci-fi nerd within you, or maybe you just like a good animated cartoon once in a while. This show features all of this and more in spades and it begs to be watched just from its pilot alone. (LauraLoo)
ABC, Hulu

With his divorce finalized and his son off to college, John Nolan, after facing down the barrel of a gun during a bank robbery, decides at the age of 45 to enroll in the LAPD police academy, making him the oldest rookie ever in the department. With Nathan Fillion headlining a show, you expect it to be a “one man” showcase. With the word “cop” in a show’s description, you probably also expect it to be a run of the mill police procedural as well. While the pilot might very well give you that impression, The Rookie excels by using its ensemble and in making its narrative character-driven. The other two rookies are as important as Nolan and all three training officers are multilayered, interesting characters. The tough sergeant is not just mean for the sake of it. The precinct’s captain is not wallpaper and owns every room she walks in. The reason this show keeps you watching is because it is compelling to see all these people do what they do and learn why they do it. Even if you do come for Fillion, odds are you’ll find way more things to love about it. (Folie-lex)
Runaways has taken its time to quietly become one of the best comic book dramas on air. Its premise is enough to draw eyes, telling the story of kids who find out that their parents are part of an evil cult. After a slow start, which spent too much time setting the stage for the events in the original comic book series, the show quickly remedied its weaknesses with a fantastic second season that really stepped up its game. With a diverse cast and a script that tackles a host of teenage problems and family drama that keeps this series grounded, Runaways has enough to appeal to everyone regardless of their age. It knows exactly what show it is and what it’s trying to do really which helps this show find its tone and groove. The comics are rich enough to keep this show going for years, and the second season pulled out all the stops to get everything right in an easily digestible way that will only improve as a binge watch. Schitt's Creek is a fish out of water story with a twist. Dan Levy refers to the show as “Breaking Good”, where our family, the Roses, start with everything in the world except the capacity to love, and after losing everything, realize that’s the one thing they can’t live without. It is welcoming to everyone and has the wittiest and sharpest comedy of any sitcom right now. Every dynamic is expertly built up to be the most romantic couplings ever depicted, and the characters develop better than they had any right to. Every season seems to one up itself in terms of the hilarious situations they build, the expert acting and directing, the handful of sets crafted, and the growth the characters experience. Music also has a crucial factor: the show is two steps away from being a musical and that’s a major compliment. A butter-voiced rendition of ‘Simply the Best,’ used by Noah Reid’s Patrick to serenade David in front of the whole town, encapsulates the entire show. With one season left, it promises to deliver a coda that satisfies as much of its audience as possible. What more can be asked for? (LauraLoo)
One of the most criminally underrated shows of the past decade that still doesn’t get enough recognition, Sons of Anarchy explores the biker gang culture with characters you’ll love one second and hate the next or vice versa. Jax Teller is a new father and vice president of the Sons of Anarchy, a small town motorcycle club that serves as a front for gunrunning. It also serves as protectors, dishing out street justice to more dangerous criminals and keeping drug dealers and enemy gangs out of their home. After discovering a memoir written by his late father, Jax sets out to change the direction of the club from a criminal enterprise to a clean, legitimate business - a decision that clashes with the ideals of many members including Clay, the club president who happens to be his stepfather. Its complex characters and brutal, bloody action is driven by the theme of whether or not you can do right by the family you have and the family you choose, and how the duties to both can affect you for better or worse. So far, we've covered pitches from #-Q. With only one more set of pitches to come tomorrow, today's nominations cover R-S Thanks again to everyone who made their pitch. I am truly sorry if your nomination is not in here. Know that I appreciate your time and pitches. Making the choice of what went into the articles was difficult. Tomorrow, I will include a link to the original spreadsheet so you can read them all in their entirety.

To keep the articles short and readable, all pitches were edited for length (less than 200 words), clarity, and grammar. I have also limited nominations to 2 per show with a couple popular shows having 3. I hope that every reader finds at least one show they are interested in trying. If you do, please comment in the section below. I know those who nominated would love to hear from you. Also, if you would like to add something to a show's nomination, please add your thoughts in the comments. Thanks again to everyone who created pitches. They have been a fun read and I have been busy adding things to my to-watch list already. Without further ado, here are the pitches for TV shows R-S.
1 season, 14 episodes

It might be a beautiful day to save lives in some medical dramas, but this one starts off with a renowned surgeon, Dr. Bell, accidentally killing a patient and covering it up. Yet Bruce Greenwood (from National Treasure: Book of Secrets) is so good in his portrayal of Bell that you won’t entirely despise him. He’s a fascinating snake to watch. Not everyone at the hospital is chill with Bell, especially hothead Conrad Hawkins (a never more charismatic Matt Czuchry), a brilliant and compassionate resident. Other characters you’ll absolutely love are head nurse Nic (the one and only Emily VanCamp), cocky surgical genius Mina (Shaunette Renée Wilson) and new resident Devon (Manish Dayal). Together, they seek to uphold their oaths to heal their patients, in spite of the real-world corruption that has infiltrated every level of the hospital. Darker demons than Dr. Bell lurk in the corridors. This hospital, potentially its patients savior and potentially their pallbearer, sets the show apart. A very real sense of jeopardy permeates every case and sweetens the victories. (Ellys Cartin)

“When you embark on a journey of Revenge, dig two graves.” That quote opens this wonderful show, which changed my entire life. I myself embarked on this journey in the summer of 2013 when I discovered this gem. It was the amazing foreshadowing, beautiful setting, shocking twists and turns, and, most importantly, the two leading ladies that got me instantly hooked on this show. Emily VanCamp and Madeline Stowe are outstanding, portraying these very different yet deliciously powerful women who carry the show. From its intriguing opening scene to its dramatic final scene, Revenge remained one of the most unique, entertaining, and intense shows on TV, although not always flawless of course. It has you rooting for the main character, who is seeking revenge on the people who destroyed not only her deceased father’s life but also her own. The twists are refreshing and shocking, the style is unique, the dialogue is smart, and the characters are compelling and entertaining. Set in the Hamptons during the summer, this is the perfect summer binge that will probably actually keep you from going outside because it is so incredibly addicting. Embark on this journey yourself!
Many people have at least one show they refer to as their “guilty pleasure”, and mine is Riverdale. You have probably heard negative things like the acting is weak, the writing is a mess, and many characters are living stereotypes. I cannot necessarily deny these, but I still enjoy the show a lot. During my stressful school time, I needed ONE show, where I didn’t need to use my brain and could just relax. Riverdale is an entertaining, fun, crazy, and dark teen drama with a lot of twists and turns. It stands out from any other network drama because of its visuals. The cinematography, setting, and music are really outstanding and create a certain atmosphere. It is also darker and more mysterious than most teen dramas are. The acting has gotten considerably better as the show progresses, and I am sure that this uphill trend will continue. If you want an entertaining show that you can binge on a rainy day when you need some downtime, Riverdale is the perfect show for you. Plus, they do have some really intense episodes that will have you at the edge of your seat. (Missions)

In the first episode, there’s death, scandal, glamour, and an emotional pie-eating scene. Prince Robert, heir to the English throne, perishes in a plane crash. His grief stricken father begins to consider a drastic response to this tragedy, with immense potential consequences for the remaining family members. Helena, the Queen Consort, part Cersei and part Alexis Carrington, is not having it...even if her twins, Liam and Eleanor, couldn’t run away from their royal titles fast enough. This show revels in being gloriously soapy and downright naughty, but it doesn’t forget to give you someone to care about. Almost everyone is insanely gorgeous and scheming, which creates fantastic clashes. There’s family drama, star-crossed love, murder, fabulous outfits, and very handsome men! It’s a pleasure you won’t feel guilty about. Also, Princess Eleanor, as created by Alexandra Park, is easily one of my favorite TV characters ever! Plus, there’s an endless supply of very witty dialogue. You could have an entire wardrobe with t-shirts bearing “The Royals” quotes. Joan Collins guest stars too! I can’t properly express my love for this show. It gets better and better. (Ellys Cartin)
4 seasons, 51 episodes
Netflix

Schitt's Creek takes a bunch of selfish, shallow people and develops them in such unexpected and delightful ways. The best comedies are the ones that allow their characters to grow rather than stagnate. When we first meet the Rose family, they can be a little hard to sympathise with but four seasons on, as they continue adapt to their new reality with no money in a small town, it is impossible not to love them. Creator and star Dan Levy has spoken about how they call the show “Breaking Good”. Instead of the moral decline that Walter White goes through in Breaking Bad, the Rose family and their friends learn how to be good people and learn how to love - and really don't we all need a bit of joy in our lives right now? (Lou)

The name of this gem was enough for me to research it, and once I did, I fell in love with the Rose family. The show is about a family that has everything but actually has nothing of meaning…until they lose their fortune and are forced to live in the town of Schitt’s Creek that was bought as a joke. Along the way, they find out who they are and learn what it means to be a family and care for something or someone other than themselves. The show has laughs, heart, and emotion, which makes you feel good while watching. (Beth)
Scorpion is a company composed of a quartet of geniuses with lots of brains but very little ability to interact with other humans. Enter Paige, a former waitress with a genius son, and Cabe, a Homeland Security officer who has a past with Walter. When they join Scorpion, the business really takes off. Although most of the storylines are implausible (think MacGyver but with more genius attitude), they suck you in and even leave you on the edge of your seat. Plus, the business team slowly grows into a real family. (Dahne)
Everyone should watch Shadowhunters because it's an amazing show with amazing actors. It's the first show I've seen that has this much LGBTQ+ representation: it has heterosexual characters, gays, lesbians, bisexuals, and the first asexual representation that I've seen on TV. It has helped so many people to understand themselves, to gain the courage to come out to their friends and family, and to learn to love themselves and others. It's our safe place. No one could ever ruin that. Everyone should watch it. (Marta)
In addition to the criminals, Vic and his team face adversity from fellow cops like the ambitious Captain Aceveda (Benito Martinez), who schemes to bring Vic down while at the same time often seeking his help.

I just finished watching The Sinner, which wasn’t on my radar until it started garnering critical love. All I can say is that it absolutely exceeded my expectations. It’s not your typical murder mystery; it’s more about what led to someone into committing this heinous crime. The story is intriguing, twisted, disturbing, complicated, and incredibly sad. The writing is tight, the foreshadowing is brilliant, and the imagery is haunting. They did a wonderful job turning this novel into a miniseries, always having the viewer at the edge of his or her seat. Jessica Biel is a revelation portraying this very complicated woman, who doesn’t really know what is going on herself. With every episode, you dig deeper into the past and realize that there is much more to a murder than the act itself. In some way, there is always a reason, or several in this case. So, to those out there who are tired of the typical whodunnit yet love murder mysteries, this is for you. I advise you watch it in one or two sittings without going on the internet. The twists and turns are so unique and so crazy that I don’t think anyone saw them coming. (Missions)
1 season, 10 episodes

A violent incident during a stormy night at sea sets in motion a chain of events in Bristol Cove, a seaside town rich with mermaid lore. Shortly afterwards, local marine biologists Ben and Maddie encounter a siren, and she is not being trailed by a parade of musical ocean life either. In fact, Ryn is much more of a predator, a distraught one seeking a lost family member at that. A local fisherman is missing as well. With the military and the local sheriff’s department all looking for their part of the filet, the situation becomes more dangerous. The visuals enthrall, with just enough magic to balance the great character drama. Wonderful to binge watch or catch week to week. I particularly love that the characters handle things maturely, and the show avoids common cliches that mar YA television. Eline Powell is absolutely captivating as Ryn. The whole cast just impresses. (Ellys Cartin)

When I first heard that FreeForm ordered a series about mermaids, I was expecting a campy fantasy show filled with contrived romance drama. Well, I happily admit my presumptions were dead wrong. In Siren, the network delivers an atmospheric action/conspiracy fantasy show with well thought through mythology that relies on the plot to move the story along. The characters are very relatable, act their age, and react smartly enough given the circumstances they find themselves in. Any romance drama (if one can even call it that), is rooted in the actual story of the show, instead of being thrown in the mix just to stir up conflict. More importantly, they deal with the romance with a maturity that is rarely found on TV in general, let alone in these types of shows. Siren also uses its, admittedly, limited budget as best as it can, knowing to throw most of its money to the mermaid affects, to pretty great results. For fans of the “mystical creatures” genre, I think this a must watch. But considering that it is a show that can exceed people’s expectations, I would recommend anyone to give it a try.
This fall, a spin off of Sons of Anarchy is coming called Mayans MC. So with that in mind, why not try Kurt Sutter’s original universe? The story of Jax Tellar is a wild ride and I can promise you will laugh, cry, get angry, and feel a gamut of emotions. Sons of Anarchy tells the story of a gang of outlaw bikers, who make you actively root for the bad guy. It has complicated family dynamics and a compelling story of love between two characters that were destined and, at times, cursed to love each other. The show explores not only the inner workings of how the biker culture is, but also how a family legacy can dictate the choices we make. (Beth)

Described as a contemporary western, the show centers around the Sons of Anarchy motorcycle club, led by single father Jax Teller. He’s divided by his loyalty to his family and to the gang, which dabbles in illegal arms dealing, all while trying to protect each other from the threats of rival gangs and police. 3 seasons, 75 episodes

A sequel to Clone Wars set in the early days of the Empire and before the events of A New Hope, the show features the ghost crew - a gang of outsiders and misfits, who fight against the oppression of the Galactic Empire. Consisting of the hopeful and gifted Ezra Bridge, expert pilot Hera, tomboyish rogue Sabine, the muscle brute Zeb who also has a heart of gold, and the enigmatic Kanan, this group of unlikely heroes set out to end the Empire's tyranny and spark the fires of rebellion. (The North Remembers)

Before The Force Awakens kicked off the big screen renaissance of the Star Wars universe, Star Wars Rebels was carving out a corner of the TV landscape. The Rebellion is just rising when an unlikely “found family” bands together to survive and later fight Imperial oppression. Kanan Jarrus, survivor of Darth Vader’s Jedi temple massacre, no longer considers himself a Jedi and is conflicted about training cunning orphan Ezra Bridger in the ways of the Force. They are joined by Hera Syndulla, the leader and pilot, Sabine Wren, a weapons and explosives expert, as well as an artist, and Zeb Orrelios, last survivor of an Imperial genocide. (Plus plucky droid Chopper). What begins as an unusually exciting children’s show grows into a visually rich drama. Jason Isaacs voices the Grand Inquisitor, a formidable foe hunting down any potential Jedi. Another opponent is David Oyelowo’s Agent Kallus, who has ties to Zeb’s tragic past and is the best Imperial character of the Star Wars universe. There are space battles, heists, sorrows, lightsaber duels, and unforgettable arcs with notable character like Darth Vader, Admiral Thrawn, and Anakin Skywalker’s former apprentice Ahsoka Tano. The most satisfying Star Wars work since the original trilogy. (Ellys Cartin)
