Let’s do this! Welcome everyone to the 2023 Character Cup! This is a special one for me since it is my 10th year running the Cup. To ensure that everybody has a good time, please read the rules below. It is important that everyone be kind and fair to make it the most fun for everyone.

Below is a link to Character Cup posts and a current set of brackets is at the bottom of the post each day. Most importantly, the daily TV Talk Topic will be found above the polls. We have a new TV Talk Topic every day and all are encouraged to participate. It's my favorite part of the contest. I can’t wait to talk TV with you!

The Character Cup goes by very quickly so check SpoilerTV every day to vote, check the prediction standings, and participate in daily discussions. For those with underdog characters, get the word out now because round 1 generally has fewer votes, so it is easier for an upset. With no further ado, I announce the 2023 Character Cup, open! Happy voting!

Earlier Posts
Prediction Contest

Round will end at approximately 1:15 am CST on Tuesday, June 20.

Character Cup Rules:

1. Don't take it too seriously! Have fun. Discuss. Play nice.

2. Cheaters suck! - Only one vote per person per poll please. While we do our best to keep the contest running smoothly, it's up to each person to follow the rules. The Cup is just a fun little piece of internet fluff. It won't get anyone's show renewed or un-cancelled. It has zero effect on ratings, so there is zero reason to cheat. All cheaters do is disrespect themselves, their fandom, their show, the actors, and this community. Just don't.

3. Focus on characters, not people. Talking about what you like and dislike about a character is encouraged. Going after actors or fans is not.

4. The aliens have not landed. There's no conspiracy here. I will do my best to keep the contest running smoothly, but I make mistakes. I apologize in advance for any technical difficulties, spelling errors, and general absentmindedness. Let me know and I'll fix it.

5. Comments are life. As you anxiously await the end of hiatus, why not distract yourself with a little TV Talk? Each day is a new topic so even if your favorites are out, you can still discuss. While the Cup is just a silly little distraction, the conversation here dives deep, so jump on in.

6. Nuts and Bolts - All polls are active for around 24 hours. Winners advance to the next round. In the case of a tie, both characters go to the next round. New polls should go up every day and polls may overlap each other. Any questions? Ask away in the comments.

TV Talk Topic: Missed It By That Much

There are a lot of awesome characters and unfortunately not all of them could get in. Below are the characters who just missed getting into the contest so it seems fair to begin our TV Talk by honoring them.

Note - Inspired by All in the Family getting in (the first Character Cup show to debut before I was born), I’m retitling our regular opening TV Talk Topic “Missed It By That Much.” It’s the catchphrase of Maxwell Smart, the 60’s comedy character from Get Smart. My brother used to love that show!

Characters Who “Missed It By That Much”:
Gary Mendez (A Million Little Things), Maggie Bell (FBI), Crystal Tyler (Heels), Sara Lance (Legends of Tomorrow), Stiles Stilinski (Teen Wolf), John Winchester (The Winchesters), Leo Fitz (Agents of SHIELD), Cordelia Chase (Angel), Will Halstead (Chicago Med), Robin McCall (The Equalizer), Remy Scott (FBI: Most Wanted), Harvey Dent (Gotham Knights), Miranda Bailey (Grey's Anatomy), Jessica Jones (Jessica Jones), Eliot Spencer (Leverage), Dr. Lauren Bloom (New Amsterdam), Dan Fielding (Night Court), Mabel Mora (Only Murders in the Building), Kaz Brekker (Shadow and Bone), Alec Lightwood (Shadowhunters), Roman Roy (Succession), Bellamy Blake (The 100), Amos Burton (The Expanse), Keyleth of the Air Ashari (The Legend of Vox Machina), Negan (The Walking Dead), Dana Scully (The X-Files), and Dale Cooper (Twin Peaks).

Shows That Split the Vote:
Agents of SHIELD, Chicago Med, Doctor Who, FBI, Game of Thrones, Grey’s Anatomy, A Million Little Things, Shadow and Bone, Succession, Teen Wolf, The 100, The Winchesters, and Yellowjackets.

Characters whose shows/actors are represented by another character:
Cordell Walker (Walker), Derek Hale (Teen Wolf), Kate Whistler (NCIS: Hawai’i), Sylvie Brett (Chicago Fire), Kim Burgess (Chicago P.D.), Angela Lopez (The Rookie), Adam Ruzek (Chicago PD), Walter White (Breaking Bad), Kelly Severide (Chicago Fire), Thomas Magnum (Magnum PI), Calian (Walker: Independence), Elle (The Last of Us), Athena Grant (911), TK Strand (911: Lone Star), Beau Alan (Big Sky), Hank Voight (Chicago PD), Johnny Lawrence (Cobra Kai), Gabriela Perez (Fire Country), Nick Torres (NCIS), and Deputy Augustus (Walker: Independence).

Hey all,

Having spent one year as a current show for last summer's competition, Gilmore Girls returns to its status as a finished show, taking second seed on that list. In 2016, mere weeks before its four-part revival landed on Netflix, it went out in the second round. This year, Suits stands in its way to make it that far once again. Neither lack in fans so this may be one of the tightest battles yet.

We then see FOX's Sleepy Hollow competing for only the second time - its only other appearance came in 2014, the first summer in which it existed. Having now been taken off the air with a number of supporters jumping ship amid creative changes, its performance here will be tough to call. It's up against one of the few large comedies today in The Big Bang Theory. Its ratings may have dwindled in the past two years but I doubt its fanbase has, and it will probably prevail here.

A reminder of the rules:

1) Two shows will go into battle in a poll, where after exactly 24 hours, the leading show will win the battle and will progress into the next round. Each poll will open at 12pm ET on a given day.
2) Vote for your favourite and spread the word with your friends & fans.
3) One vote per person per poll.
4) Comment on what you voted for on in the comments below.
5) Have fun. This is a friendly & competitive competition. Please do not start attacking other fans or fangroups in the comments, because this really isn't what this competition is about.

While a number of broadcast series at all five networks already have secured early renewals a month before the upfronts, there are quite a few that are yet to hear, some of them heavily on the bubble. Here is rundown of the broadcast scripted series whose fate beyond this season has not been unveiled yet, along with my assessment of their chances. You can stay up to date with the status of the current TV series with Deadline’s Series Renewal Status Scorecard.

On the drama side, freshman drama Designated Survivor, a strong delayed viewing and international performer (ABS Studios co-produces with indie Mark Gordon Co.) is certain to come back, in anticipation of a renewal the series is in the process of hiring a new showrunner. Things also look promising for veteran Once Upon a Time, contingent on closing deals with four cast members identified to lead a planned reimagining of the series, Jennifer Morrison, Lana Parrilla, Robert Carlyle and Colin O’Donoghue. I hear the show is meeting with writers as two of its key producers, Andrew Chambliss and Ian Goldberg, left to become co-showrunners on Fear the Walking Dead. Even Quantico, which has been struggling this season after a solid first year, appears likely to continue as it makes money for ABC Studios via international and SVOD (Netflix) deals. (It also features a global star in Priyanka Chopra.) Ditto for Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D., which serves as a marketing platform for the Disney-owned Marvel. The Catch survived a low-rated first season to clinch a second-season renewal as part of TGIT. A creative reboot heading into Season 2 did not lead to a ratings boost as The Catch continues to lag far behind TGIT’s Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal and HTGAWM, with its ratings also below two new fall ABC dramas that are not expected to come back, Notorious and Conviction. While a third season of The Catch appears a long shot, there is internal support for the series, which has appealing leads in Peter Krause and Mireille Enos, a big producer behind it, Shondaland, and potential international play for ABC Studios. ABC’s prestige drama American Crime is heavily on the bubble with low ratings offset by a strong critical acclaim, leaving ABC to weigh in the two and make a renewal decision. Not expected to be in the running for a third season is anthology crime drama Secrets & Lies, with swiftly pulled midseason drama Time After Time also gone.

The nominations this month were incredibly robust with a massive turnout. This might very well have been the most nominations ever submitted. Normally there are clear fan favorites who dominate and get a ridiculous number of nominations. Those nominees don't always go on to win, but they always do very well in the polls. This month was an exception in that there was no clear singular favorite in either category. Every one of these Top 5 in both categories received hundreds of nominations each. There were a few contenders who got very close, but just barely missed slipping into the Top 5. Thank you so much to every person who participated in the nomination round. Your entries have helped to create what could very well be our most competitive polls yet.

Now comes the hard part where you can only vote for 1 actor and 1 actress to be crowned as the Performers Of The Month for March. The polls will be open until 6 pm ET on April 14th.

Nirat: Hannah writes a truly honest, painful letter anonymously and leaves it for her teacher to read out in Communications class. “What if the only way not to feel bad is to not feel anything at all. Forever.” - Those honest, painfully raw words from Hannah didn’t even get a reaction from Zach (whom she was trying to reason with after he started taking away her compliments from her bad, which were only a few to begin with, after she said no to him, his ego was bruised and he decided to make her feel small). Her classmates started being critical about the message, saying that she was an attention seeker, that it was a joke, only two defended her saying that it was a real call for help. Imagine just sitting in there whilst people tried to put meaning to your words, reducing you to nothing, making you feel so lonely, that your pain was worthless. It was such a small scene but its depth moved me. I have felt lonely more times than I can remember and I know how hard it is when someone knows that/or makes you feel that way and then everyone starts doing it. The chain reaction, the way people take away your sense of being human, making you feel so trapped is a despicable thing to do. The way everyone just walked out of class whilst Hannah sat back alone, completely isolated, was devastating. Even before this, Hannah confronting Zach about stealing her compliments in the hallway crowded with students (after she wrote him a letter etched with the pain she’d be feeling made him feel nothing), saying “Why me?”, just a simple, heartbreaking cry out, wasn’t even enough for him to stop, just shows how cruel people can be. It’s horrible that being so honest makes you somehow less than a person. How is it possible that this is the way people are thinking now. That even if someone else feels lonely, like you, they would rather make you feel even worse just angers me. How is it okay to keep going on like this, something really needs to change. The social construction of belittling others to move up in the world is vile. I could’ve mentioned the scenes where Hannah’s two close friends abandon her, Courtney speaking utter dishonesty about what really happened between Hannah and her when she stayed over, countless tragic scenes but I choose this one because loneliness is something universal. These aren’t at all best scenes of the week but rather boldly profound ones, pulling at your soul moments television shows shy away from. I also just wanted to acknowledge the sheer range and talent of Katherine Langford's performance as Hannah Baker. She's one of the most exceptional things about the show. How she carries herself as parts of her being are chipped away is unlike anything else. I have never seen a high school show so accurately depicted in all its form of cruelty until 13 Reasons Why and I’m what they’d call a millennial, yet nothing has been properly made for my audience. So many shows have an emphasis on superficial aspects, wanting to be popular and if they are hurt, it automatically feels absent the next episode. As someone who knows what loneliness feels like, this episode meant a lot to me, I’ve never seen someone feel the same in this manner before. In other shows, it’d be touched on and then end all happily as if life is easily remedied in under 40 minutes. This show examines pain in a way that’s constantly evolving, shows it’s growth and overpopulation on the mindset of young people and it’s consequences. I recommend this show to everyone, watch slowly, at your own pace, take breaks, you don’t need to binge it if all at once because it’s hard. Pain isn't easy to consume so quickly. It’s not a fictional drama, pain doesn't disappear like many shows make it. People suffer like this every day but it’s a story that needs to be heard. I shed a tear every episode, the final episodes leaving its most hurtful mark on me but its message is what is the most important thing to take away. Words, actions, they matter, next time you want to be cruel to someone, stop. Stop putting down people, stop hiding behind the safety of your computer screen, stop thinking your voice only matters, stop trying to make people be what you want them, stop making them feel bad because they are different, because you think their opinions suck. Everything said and done has a repercussion that can be devastating and you wouldn’t even know.
AMERICAN CRIME, "Season Three: Episode Three", March 26, 2017, Actors: Benito Martinez and more, The Scene: Luis has an emotional breakdown
Milo: The ending gets my pick here. Seeing Adrian Chase escape, kill a man with a pen and drive off into the distance with music playing in the background as multiple police cars drive past him. The John Wick-esque fight scene was very cool, especially that Arrow Season 5 has really turned around in form and the psychopath Chase is definitely the show’s best villain since Manu Bennett’s Deathstroke, and I can’t wait to see where his story goes from here.
Darth Locke: Norman nervously pushes Marion to leave. Obviously the fun twisted take from Psycho's iconic shower scene is that it's not Marion who gets the knife, but Sam Loomis! With that being said, the twist of Sam getting it instead came off a little shallow to me simply because I felt like there was no real meat between the men that would have enhanced Norman's story with his father and because Sam Loomis didn't prove to be a psychically violent man, but just a kind of complacent cheat. So it's for that reason I found final scene between Marion and Norman much more deserving and really well-acted on both Freddie Highmore's and Rihanna's parts. I just loved the sort of absent minded and vulnerable way Marion confides in him, after just being so violent in previous scene, even places her head on Norman's shoulder, while watching Norman play with her belongings, before he just suddenly gets up, begins gathering her things, empathizing and encouraging her escape to a new life--the life Norma never got. It was nerve-wrecking, kind of sad, but also a little comical all at the same time.
Marko: Norman and Norma final face off. It is just soooooo good and soooo juicy. Norman and Norma were finally face to face with only the truth between them. Excellent execution of such a vital scene.
Luana: Jane confesses she still makes up excuses for Ziggy's father. Shailene Woodley has been killing it every week, but this particular conversation was heartbreaking, because no matter how inexcusable the actions of the man who raped her are, she still can't come to terms with the idea that her beautiful little boy came from someone that was pure evil. It's amazing to me when shows can capture the complex feelings that come with every situation, when they are able to show nothing is truly simple.
DJRiter: As brilliant as she's been throughout this limited series Nicole Kidman delivered an Emmy caliber performance as she grippingly confessed to her therapist/counselor that her husband beats her.
The conflict was so great, especially with the flashbacks further fleshing out the Flint/Silver dynamic in the build-up to this scene, making everything incredibly tense and action packed. The characters were fantastic here and the cinematography, as well as the location itself really worked here in creating a fantastic backdrop to the events that followed. J. Thyne and more, The Scenes: The Goodbye in the Lab & Booth tells Brennan what she means to him & Hodgins tells Booth he doesn't always have to be a hero
Justyna K: Saying gooodbye to a show can often seem like quite an impossible task for the creators. As hard as it can be on a personal level, there's just so many things that can go wrong when it comes to the final story. There's no way each and every fan will be happy about the ending, so the best you can do is to remain faithful to the characters and their journey, showing the viewers that the time they spent with the show allowed them to see the growth and important changes in the lives of these people. That it mattered, as much as it could. The thing I always wish for when the ending comes is to leave the show knowing that the characters I spent (usually) years with and rooting for, that they're going to be okay later on. That their experiences will stay with them and show them a better way for the future, and whatever comes, they'll handle it, just like they did on the show. That's exactly why in this wonderful hour with many great scenes to highlight (some of them already mentioned in the article) I decided to go with the final goodbye at the lab. Cam announces to the team that she will be leaving for a while, to start a new life and family with Arastoo, giving her position as the head of the Jeffersonian Institute's Forensic Division to Hodgins. His reaction is such a fun and heartwarming part. He's officially the King of the Lab, like he and Zack always used to talk and argue about. More than that, Brennan realizes how much her job means to her and just how okay she is where she's at, with Booth and her friends. Angela and Hodgins are expecting another baby and the lab will be fixed in a few months, thanks to the overwhelming support coming from all the possible places. It's a wonderful, heartwarming end of the road for these characters, without feeling like the absolute ending, but rather beginning to a new chapter. Hopeful, full of adventure and excitement, and simply good. Kudos to entire cast & crew of the show for this great journey and 12 seasons that the viewers will surely revisit in the future! All the best and thank you.
Jimmy: Colony incorporated another superb long-take scene in this week's episode. Will, Katie and Broussard entered a theater and fought many enemies in multiple locations on their way to gathering the gauntlet they were after. This scene spanned 4 minutes, 20 seconds. It was incredibly dynamic with many extras and moving parts. The special effects, cinematography and editing were fantastic, and the scene was just as good - if not better - than the slightly shorter long-take set in the Bowman's house earlier in the season. Also picked by Darth Locke
Nirat: After all the rejection Pauline faced, as being both a woman and a nobody, it was Mamacita that reassured her everything would be better. I thought this was a beautiful moment in the show. Alison Wright and Jackie Hoffman were superb during the entire episode but this was where they shined immensely. After feeling beat down by the truths Pauline was faced with, she just talked with Mamacita about settling, staying where she was and no longer wanting to aspire. However, our dear Mamacita had other plans, the way she consoled Pauline through her research as a new citizen at the library, that everything would get better, was beautiful. To give someone hope again is a selfless and kind act that gave Mamacita so much more depth. It also provided a real ray of light when we see how much sexism, ageism, and rudeness our leading ladies went through. “Studios will have obligations to make half of stories about women, for women, by women, it only makes economic sense”, the way Mamacita says this, with such conviction is something we all should aspire to, to be more hopeful, don't give up because you feel hopeless, things can change. I can’t say enough about how wonderful Jackie Hoffman has been, I adored her scenes with Alison Wright who was just flawless throughout the episode. I'm so heartbroken the season is halfway over, it's been a real joy to watch. “Keep your head up, you’re day is coming”.
I was hoping for something a bit more darker in the vein of Angel. Nevertheless, this was one of the final scenes of the final episode, and one where we see team Grimm together for the last time.
Klutzy girl: Seeing Kelly and Diana in the future was fantastic. We didn't get much of their dynamic but it was definitely fun. They tease each other a lot! Plus, the fact that Diana seemingly also refers to Nick as "Dad" killed me. I wish we could have seen more of them together.
Nirat: David questions if Farouk is his phantom limb. "What happens when you're gone?", that very idea of questioning what you are without something, even as toxic as it can be is truly profound. I’ve never seen another comic book show deal with this idea of loss before. That even for a moment, you question, that time they spent together isn't something to dismiss so lightly and it's important that this human moment was shown and not just straight to the action that devoids you of any connection, any realism. Noah Hawley’s ability to make you question this relationship is not something another showrunner would be able to do so perfectly. "Are you my phantom?", that metaphor is stunning, Lenny is in some ways an illusion, he believed that she was his friend, she was not, just a face to hide the cruelty being orchestrated. The sheer depth here is unprecedented, to go so deeply into one's mind, seeing how this parasite has infiltrated your life, made you worse, destroyed your sense of reality, altered your memories yet still gives you a sort of friend in Lenny and King is twisted yet executed with brilliance. “I’m… not…leaving..”, the way this was said, the struggle it took to utter those words as Farouk felt the pressure off David fighting against him was great. Not enough amazing things can be said about Aubrey Plaza, one of the greatest castings for such a character, in league with the Marvel/Netflix characters. That rebuttal when Farouk started pushing his fingers against David’s throat was horrifying. The way the coloring of the scene shifted from normal, warm hues to a dark red was hauntingly powerful marking the switch in power. The entire scenes were filmed with such precision capturing Dan Stevens' fantastic performance. I couldn’t have been in more awe of him throughout the season and this scene. Seeing him being strangled with his own arms but fighting through it was a real showcase of strength and character. The way the pain was uncomfortably evident on his face was remarkable. Thank you, Noah Hawley, FX, and Marvel for redefining what it means to be an incredible piece of television, one of the best seasons I’ve watched, as well as setting the standards for comic book tv even higher.
Darth Locke: The Shadow King hops person to person, before it finally makes its escape after finding Oliver. Legion's first season has been beyond a pleasure to watch, both because of its artistic creativity and wondrous visualizations, its more psychological approach to its story-telling, but also because it doesn't completely exclude its X-Men film counterparts with references and interesting action sequences, like the sequence of events in these scenes. It's IMO perfect.
DarkUFO: Opening scene where David takes out all the soldiers.
This was Lana Parilla's chance to shine as she beautifully portrayed this battle of a woman fighting herself. After using the magic shears to separate them, the two began trading blows both physically and emotionally as the two sides of Regina fought for dominance...until finally when Regina had the Evil Queen on the ropes, a broken mirror showed Regina what Cupid's Arrow had shown the Evil Queen, that the person she hated the most was herself. That's when Regina's better half won and her solution, instead of killing the Evil Queen was to take both their hearts and meld them and put them back, so whether they liked it or not they would always be a part of one another. Laura: Oh my God. This is the best reverse-April Fools thing to ever happen to the world. The internet (and myself) were weary about this, and for good reason. We've been waiting a year and a half for Season 3 (Mr. Poopy Butthole sure was right), and we got this. This beautiful premiere. There were so many callbacks and easter eggs in this episode that you might need to switch brains with someone to fully understand everything. But the real standouts of the episode? Summer in general. Morty's growing up. And some Rick developments. After crashing into the Galactic Federation using the Council of Ricks to do so, a standoff ensues between the head Rick and C-137 Rick. Head Rick takes Summer hostage and Earth Rick has a gun. Morty's there too. It's crazy and tensions are high. Earth Rick is spouting out the scenarios of how this could go down. Summer is showing nervousness, but true devotion to her grandfather. And Morty? He's rebelling against him. He really is growing up and that's what surprised me the most about the writing for this episode. And in this scene it's evident why he chose to do what he did. He didn't read the note on the side of the gun. He didn't know his grandfather would survive. He was tired of everyone calling himself an idiot. If Morty doesn't grow to become that Eyepatch Morty from 1.10 I would be shocked. He's well on his way in this timeline. And that scares me. Anyway, so Head Rick dies and Earth Rick and fam. survive. They take down the government (and Nathan Fillion, heyo) and all seems well. Morty's chuckle that he didn't know about the note on the gun reminded me of when Rick didn't know Morty was gonna shoot the parasites in 2.04. "Ricks hate themselves the most" - that's what made that standoff so intense. It could've gone any other way but I don't see a way in which Earth Rick would kill Summer unless by accident. Ricks can rebel by caring about their grandkids and we know this Rick does. And this scene was so well done. Other noteworthy scenes was basically everything Summer, and the post-credits scene. I can't believe we have to wait until the summer for more, but I'm very satisfied with this until then.
Samantha: Alice Cooper confronts Hal Cooper over arranging an abortion for Polly. There were a lot of really great scenes in this week's episode but this one really stuck out to me. Alice Cooper has been rather cold towards Polly and to an extent Betty since the show began, but over the course of the week's hour that demeanor has to an extent softened. Her devastated fury at Polly's revelation turned to pure rage when she confronted her husband and it was quite the epic argument, revealing a bit of back history between them. Alice has been all about appearance and what people think about both her and her family. When Hal attempted to use this by questioning what people would think of her throwing him out, and she simply replied that she didn't care, you knew she'd reached the end of her limit & it was superb acting from Madchen Amick.
Aimee: As the team walked through the woods the show smartly gave several of the characters a little extra motivation to fight and survive. Alex and Jake shared a kiss that has been in the making since the start of the season. They are an incredible duo and there are a lot of fun stories still yet to tell regarding them and their growing feelings. Lara and Diana were allowed a lovely moment to finally acknowledge their bond as mother and daughter. Lara finally referred to Diana as “mom” and Diana called Lara her “baby girl”. That relationship is ripe for lots of fun and complicated stories of Diana trying to mother a daughter that hasn’t had a mother for most of her life. Should the show somehow miraculously get a final Season Five it’s practically a guarantee that Lara will find her way back to the team. She’s been alone for so much of her life that the connection to Crane and her desire to know her mom better will bring her back to them swiftly. It was also fun that Lara got to call Crane “old man” which beautifully tied in with young Molly at the end of the episode. Crane got his big grand moments later in the episode as did Jenny. This moment still heavily evolved them as Crane rallied the team and Jenny firmly took charge of the part of the team that would be directly confronting the Horsemen. Every aspect of this scene was perfectly acted and executed as the stakes became very real and the importance of what they were doing was made to feel palpable. This big group scene was certainly necessary as they all charged into this fight with such bad odds working against them. It was a great scene from a powerful season finale.
Aimee: This was a very important scene that needed to happen for Maggie and Alex to start to make steps towards the next stage of their relationship. From the start, they have had one of the healthiest relationships on television. These two have their problems, but they always support each other no matter what. Maggie went out of her way to try and make Alex’s coming out as easy as possible. She lied about having supportive parents, when in fact she was banished by them, because she didn’t want to add any extra fear to Alex’s journey. Maggie has definitely always been very guarded and just to be with Alex she had to overcome a lot of personal insecurities. Still, she has remained somewhat guarded and in this moment Alex was finally able to breakthrough Maggie’s final remaining wall. The most important aspect of this scene was that this encounter wasn’t about anger or judgment because Alex approached it from a place of pure love. She wanted to be able to be there for Maggie the way Maggie has been there for her. They support each other no matter what obstacles life throws at them and they always go about it from a place of love. That’s what was so important about this scene, that it was never about anything other than Alex trying to help Maggie overcome some of the immense pain from her past. The acting from both was phenomenal, but the acting Floriana did was exceptional. When Alex called Maggie out about not liking to talk about herself there was this heart wrenching tremble in her chin and catch in her voice that perfectly queued up the rest of the scene. As the shot was on Chyler and Alex was talking about Maggie’s past, Floriana is off focus, but her chin can still be seen clearly quivering and she pulls in her lip to try and control it. Floriana had Maggie right on the precipice of completely breaking down but managed to hold her emotions in check the way Maggie has trained herself to do. The scene wouldn’t have worked as well had Maggie completely fallen apart, but it was important to see all those underlying emotions within Maggie. The acting choice by Floriana to show Maggie still fighting to stay in control of herself and the way Chyler kept Alex’s tone so soft and supportive really made this scene hit hard. This was an exceptionally written scene with such an important message and it was expertly acted. Also picked by Samantha and DJRiter
Justyna K: On this week's episode the characters both failed and succeeded in their plans to save everyone facing the death wave. For once, Jaha's search actually resulted in finding a real solution to the problems the Sky People (and all the other Clans) struggle with. For a moment I considered the final scene of the episode as the moment to highlight in the article but in the end it's the story happening in Becca's old lab that stole the hour for me. Things escalated quickly when the first test failed in the worst possible way, brutally killing the intruder we met in the previous episode. It didn't take much for everyone to turn against each other after that, with Emori being targeted for the next (potentially deadly) test and Murphy being locked away with her. One of the best scenes of the hour has to be the confrontation between Clarke and Murphy. Richard Harmon did an incredible job there, as Murphy both pleads with and threatens Clarke, telling her how important Emori is to him and making her realize the cruelty and unfairness of her actions. "...you're forgetting the last time you saved us, I was saving you!" But the defining moment for Clarke and a potential turning point for the show comes in the scene after the confrontation, when Emori is lying unconscious on the table and Clarke's holding the Nightblood serum, ready to inject it when she changes her mind... There are a few seconds when she quietly considers all the options, looks around the room and realizes everybody's position and feelings towards her, the minute when she truly understands the heavy weight this decision put on her mom and everyone around and Clarke makes a surpising choice - to inject herself and volunteer for the testing. “I bear it so they don't have to.” The memory of Mount Weather still haunts her and this time she's trying to do better. There's so much sadness in her voice, but no fear or hesitation when she tells everyone they're going to be testing the next potential solution for the radiation on her. There's a change in Clarke in this moment and Eliza Taylor plays it beautifully. It's such a powerful scene, an unexpected turn and a new opportunity for the future episodes (Clarke's now a Nightblood). I'm excited to see where the story leads next and the impact of this one memorable choice on the show's main character. Kudos to cast & crew for another great episode!
Kollin: Bobbie experiences Earth for the first time and learns to walk in gravity. In the first half of season 2, we were introduced to a stubborn rebellious Marine blinded by her hate for Earthers. A hate that really comes down to her envy of their atmospheric planet, that of which Mars can only dream of. As Bobbie walks through the slums, on Earth for the first time, she sees that, yes, people live on this beautiful planet, but many live lives that are as bad as hers. People disadvantaged by disabilities, people with no roof over their heads, people who are forced to drink contaminated water. Bobbie sees actual humans who are, at the end of the day, struggling to live as much as she had been on Mars. It is part of humanity to want what we don't have, and sometimes that desire blinds us. In 'Cascade' we see a Martian whose eyes are finally opened to the realities of her life in perspective to the life of others outside of Mars. Her scene with Nico was especially profound. Nico's story clearly hit a soft spot and it was touching to see her reaction as she witnesses his humility. Earthers aren't that bad after all, as Nico said, we all have our misconceptions. This marks a turning point for Bobbie, she finally sees how narrow minded she had been, a truly defining moment that sticks to you emotionally.
Justyna K: At one point of the season and especially this episode it became clear that Caitlin will eventually become the thing she's most afraid of - Killer Frost. The only questions left were "how" and "when". When she was injured earlier in the hour, Snow makes it clear that she would rather die than be a monster and a killer her powers turn her into. And at first it seemed like she'll be okay after Julian's medical intervention. But it wouldn't be "The Flash" if that's where the things ended. After a sudden seizure Caitlin succumbs to her wounds and dies with Cisco, Julian and HR standing by her side. Their desperate attempts to resuscitate her make this scene truly heartbreaking to watch. Especially when it becomes clear they can't save her and Cisco breaks down, realizing that his best friend's gone. And despite his suggestion hours before, that he would rip off her power-blocking necklace if it meant her being safe, Cisco chooses to honor her wishes and is confronted with the painful reality of this unbelievable loss. But not Julian. Caitlin became such an important person in his life and he barely let her in and refuses to say goodbye knowing there's another way to save her. So he takes her necklace, allowing her powers to heal her and in that moment of relief and hope, all three are taken by surprise when Killer Frost makes her presence known almost right away. The curse of becoming completely different person is quite a unique way to keep both Caitlin and Killer Frost on the show, without losing one of them for good. I'm still not sure about this approach but I can't help but highlight this powerful scene which signifies the change in the dynamics between all the characters in the future episodes. Also, the acting in this moment is truly fantastic! Carlos Valdes' performance alone made this scene memorable and painfully hard to watch. Tom Felton also finally gets a chance to show more of the depth and emotions in his character, and he absolutely excels at it. The music, the story and the actors together make this scene one of my choices for Scene of the Week. Kudos!
Aimee: Caitlin dies then becomes Killer Frost again. Caitlin’s biggest fear is that she would one day again become Killer Frost. She has fought it for so long and was willing to give up her own life in order to not become that monster again. It has been obvious for a while that Caitlin was basically a ticking time bomb waiting to go off. Given the number of times they brought up Caitlin’s necklace in this episode, it was more about when it was going to be removed rather than if, but the way they did it was still quite brilliantly executed. The fact that Cisco fought for Caitlin’s wishes to be honored despite his own heartbreak was such powerful acting by Carlos Valdes. Then Tom Felton stepped in and the pain in his eyes as Julian ripped the necklace away was exceptional acting. Then there was Danielle Panabaker who absolutely nailed Caitlin’s vulnerability in the seconds before and as Caitlin coded. When Killer Frost emerged the negative energy emanating from her was haunting as she closed out the episode. Never did I think that this would be the way that Killer Frost would reemerge. This was done out of a place of complete and total love from Julian who did not want to lose Caitlin, but the sad reality is that he might just have lost her anyway. Perhaps the love of her friends will be able to save her again, but at least for now she’s a powerful threat let loose on the city. All of the acting by the guys, Tom Cavanah included, was so emotional and they made the stakes feel very real as they gave their all trying to save Caitlin. The intense musical score only added to the intensity of the scene. This was a great way to end this episode and build up hype for the last set of episodes of the season.
Milo: Quentin and Alice reunite, even if it was Alice from another timeline where Quentin had died instead. After everything that Quentin and Alice had been through it was great to see that they got the chance to have one more scene together, and with the idea that there is an alternate dimension out there where Quentin was the one who died and Alice lived opened up multiple possibilities. Here, the scene was executed so damn well it has to go down as one of my favourite scenes from this week.
Marko: It sounds weird but it was such a strong scene. Kimara is such a strong woman but her going to her ex had to be so tough and you could feel the turmoil Kimara was going through. The whole set up had such an intimate vibe and while Kimara was at her lowest Reggie was the perfect gentleman and gave her as much support as he could provide in this awkward situation.
Darth Locke: Norman discovers what he has been doing over the past couple of years, when he goes to a bar to pick-up his car. I imagine that when Psycho came out, one of the film's greater shocks was Norman's physical transformation into Norma and that they ultimately portrayed Norman as a transvestite. Bates Motel has served more as a way to see the tragic humanity in Norman's disposition, rather than reduce his proclivities to pure shock value. But that's not to say that the shock of that revelation in the film is still not shocking here, especially in this scene, but rather it's more of a shock to Norman, than it is the audience--again making Norman such tragically human character by not always really knowing what he's doing or what's real. To discover you're having sexual and/or intimate relationships with a lot of other people and with a sexual orientation you never thought you identified with, not only adds a layer onto Norman's complexity in his character and in his current circumstance, but because he happened to find a place where he was accepted, makes for an interesting juxtaposition and speaks more directly to a modern audience. It was a fantastic way to remind viewers that 2017 isn't 1961, at least in terms of what subject matter can be used on film. Outside of Norman's serial killing problems, it was Bates way of supporting transgender rights and was a bold thing to include in its subtext.
DarkUFO: Dylan tells Emma about how he thinks Norman might have killed her mother.
Justyna K: It's almost the end of the show and the stakes have never been higher. It was a great hour with a beautiful wedding, a compelling mystery, a long-awaited hopeful news and an intense ending. The moment Booth realizes there's a bomb in the lab everyone is evacuated, almost everyone, I should say. Booth, Bones, Angela and Hodgins are trapped when the door closes and neither Cam or Arastoo are able to get them out. When Booth locates the bomb and works to disarm it the viewers would normally expect him to succeed but not in this case. As it turns out, there are many explosives located in several places around the lab and it's impossible to get to them all at this time. So despite Booth's work and Hodgins' support the bombs go off, shortly after the group is separated with Brennan who goes back for some evidence. It's clear that we're very close to the show's end and that final explosion makes for one powerful cliffhanger before Bones last hour. Kudos to the cast & crew for their great work on this one!
DJRiter: Bette and Joan stop fighting during the filming to have drinks. While discussing the difficulties of raising children as a single mom, the two bickering stars find common ground and talk openly about their childhoods and sexual pasts. The scene surprisingly reveals that the more liberated Bette Davis waited until her wedding night in her late 20's to lose her virginity, while the more repressed Joan Crawford reveals she lost her virginity at age 11 to her stepfather. This scene is indicative of so many in this wonderful limited series, it's at its best when the scenes about two of Hollywood's finest Golden Age stars, Bette Davis and Joan Crawford, are just two of today's finest, Jessica Lange as Joan Crawford and Susan Sarandon as Bette Davis at the top of their games. Sarandon has been especially impressive as Davis so far.
Saloni: Riggs and Mer's talk ending in him asking her out for dinner & her saying yes. Nathan gave a very good speech about why he likes Meredith but can't think of a single reason why she should like him. I really like them together. This scene was bittersweet for me because I do think Mer should move on but come on, I obviously missed McDreamy here. Long, romantic speeches is a Derek thing. Nevertheless, I hope the two really have something.
GRIMM, "Zerstörer Shrugged", March 24, 2017, Actors: David Giuntoli, Claire Coffee
The Scene: Nick tells Adalind he loves her
Kollin: Sunny fights his Captors. Following the events of last season's finale, Sunny finds himself arriving at the prison encampment and he immediately puts up a fight. This scene, as we've come to expect from Into The Badlands, featured some brilliantly creative choreography, with Sunny making good use of his environment ala Jackie Chan to fend off his foes. Also picked by Milo
Kollin: This is creativity at its finest, a stunningly shot scene devoid of any dialogue and coupled with the perfect musical score. The dialogue boxes, a call back to the silent film era of yore, was brilliantly put to use in what turned out to be a very tense scene in all its audio and visual goodness. Legion has been hit or miss, sometimes it tries too hard to be creative and profound, this is an example of one of the scenes that they got right from beginning to end. Also picked by DarkUFO
Darth Locke: David talks with David in Classroom. This episode really used its visualization techniques to the max, which went nicely with how the episode also laid down information to those viewers who may have a hard time following the cerebral and artsy nature of the series. This is one of those scenes that spelled things out about David, The Shadow King, and David's father that also sets the stage for the second season, including really hinting at the appearance of an alternate Charles Xavier with David's "inner" British rational counterpart! I just loved how Dan Stevens played off of himself and the fun and creative way the scene used chalkboard drawings to let David and the audience figure some things out!

REIGN, "Love & Death", March 24, 2017, Actors: Adelaide Kane, Will Kemp
The Scene: Mary tells Darnley she can't fall for someone again
Luana: I personally think that Darnley is a bit too over the top and him comparing his previous love, with her and Francis', didn't make a whole lot of sense, but Mary's pain was so visible, Adelaide Kane has been getting better every single season and I'm dreading to see Mary's end.
Luana: Right when I thought the show might take a step back and go back to what normal was last season, they decide to say "screw it" and shoot normal in the face. It turns out there were other reasons behind Stahl's obsesion, and it's a game-changer. I don't know how they do it, but every episode seems to be building up to a huge finale, and the season has just started! It looks like they're not letting the tension go anywhere anytime soon.
Aimee: Lara and Crane shared a beautiful moment in Crane’s mind. The moment he was free he ran to her and tried to tend to her. She was hurt trying to save him and was in rough shape when he wrapped her up in his arms. For someone who had been alone for most of her life, she was suddenly enveloped by so much love. Crane protectively had his arms around her in his mind and in the real world Diana had her daughter cradled in her arms. No matter the fact that Lara isn’t the young Molly they know because to them all that matters is that she is indeed Molly regardless of her age or name. Crane made sure to reiterate to her that as his fellow witness they will never allow her to be alone again. Just as she accepted that the Lara in Crane’s mind seemed to succumb to her wound and was effectively reborn back into her mom’s arms in the flash of a brilliant metaphorical warm white light. The imagery in the scene was spectacular and so poignant. As Lara recovered from the ordeal she seemed so much more at ease with her mom even going so far as to have a little fun with her. The whole scene was incredibly well done and the acting was spot on. It was a very important scene to reintegrate Lara with the team and effectively allow her to be reborn as the witness she is. Seychelle Gabriel has great chemistry with both Janina Gavankar and Tom Mison. This entire episode was spot on and exceptional, but this scene was definitely a standout.
Aimee: This was the hundredth episode of the series and they paid great homage to all they’ve been through. It was a very emotional turn in the story when they introduced Ally in the prior episode and revealed that she has Angelo’s heart. It was only a matter of time before she formally got to meet Regina, but it was a tumultuous episode as Ally had to figure out how to own up to her troubled past while trying to make peace with Angelo’s family. When Daphne and Bay finally felt it was time to introduce Ally and Regina the stage was set for an emotional scene. Though no one could have guessed the beautiful scene the show would deliver. As Regina and Ally embraced the young woman temporarily disappeared and was replaced by Angelo. This was already a special episode and the way they were able to integrate Angelo, who was such a huge part of the series, back into it was beautifully done. The embrace was healing for both Regina who still struggles with Angelo’s passing and Ally who is struggling with believing she is worthy of Angelo’s heart. I also loved that they made it appear that Daphne and Bay were able to see their father. This scene allowed Angelo’s heart to return home and to give Ally the peace she has been seeking. The prism, which effectively connected Ally, Angelo and Regina was also a nice little touch. This was an absolutely perfect way to bring Gilles Marini back for this episode and do it in a really heartfelt and meaningful way.
Justyna K: It was especially dark and memorable episode for me. And knowing this show, that says a lot. There were a few powerful plots happening during the hour as most of the characters fought against the deadly black rain. The plot that hit me the most was the one taking place in Arkadia, with the focus on two characters with especially troubled history of many mistakes and losses - Kane and Bellamy. I continue to love all the interactions between these two, their relationship is certainly one of my favorites on the show lately. And what a powerful episode it was for these guys! Kane has sort of become a father figure of the group, as can be witnessed in his scenes with Clarke, Octavia and in this hour - Bellamy and Harper. I still remember the character we were introduced to when the show started years ago. He's come such a long way and has become one of the best developed and liked characters on the series, thanks to the great writing and the wonderful performance by the incredible Henry Ian Cusick. Kane had a difficult task of being a rock and support of everyone this week, whether it was Harper's guilt, Abby's choice or Bellamy's mission, he was there when they needed him the most. And Bellamy's mission proved to be one of the darkest and most heartbreaking one yet. During the black rain a father and son, two of the Arkadia residents, were trapped away from the camp and Bellamy didn't hesitate to go after them, especially knowing that the son, Peter, is one of the 100. That alone had such a great meaning to the character, with all the history behind them. The scene when Kane makes Bellamy realize that he's out of options and he has to wait for the rain to pass before he gets to Mark and Peter was incredibly hard to watch. Bellamy telling the father and son that he's stuck a couple of minutes away from them was heartbreaking view. But it's the scene closer to the end of the episode, when he gets a confirmation that they're gone and breaks down over all his failures and Octavia, that's the one I had to highlight in the article. Bob Morley does an incredible work during the hour and this moment especially. Going from the pain and heartbreak all over his face to a blank expression as he tells Kane he's to blame for his mother's death. Such a powerful and dark moment. And it gives us a great insight into both Bellamy and Kane as they struggle with their past choices and look for a better way to live. Kudos to both actors & the crew for their wonderful work during the episode!
Diana: Bellamy gets stuck in his truck as he realizes he can't move on and go to save Peter's life - one of the 100. He needs to do something and his frustration, when he understands he can't do anything to save his life, it's real and it breaks my heart. Bellamy deserves more, seriously. I can't stand watching him suffer. Give him some happiness!
Marko: The Radio Conversation between Abby and Kane. Two amazing actors generating so much emotion with one simple scene. Just tremendous, convincing work by both actors.
Aimee: Ilian stops Octavia from running back into the black rain. Ever since Lincoln was killed Octavia has been walking around numb to the world around her. She’s been on soldier auto pilot just trying to get through everything happening around her. As she held that gun to Ilian’s head in the last episode something snapped in her. Still, as Ilian pointed out, under all of her pain she is still the same Octavia who she was when Lincoln was alive. The problem is that Octavia has tried so hard to numb her pain that she can’t even process just how much she is hurting both physically and mentally. She has become so numb to pain that she just wanted to feel something. Which is all quite ironic because just days earlier she was impaled on a sword and fell into a raging river just before dragging her broken body up onto her horse. That should have been enough pain for anyone for a lifetime, but it wasn’t for Octavia. Then Kane triggered some primal emotions in her when he talked her down from killing Ilian, but it still wasn’t enough, though, it did start the ball rolling for Octavia to experience a rapid downward emotional spiral. When Octavia headed towards the toxic rain she was desperate to connect with something that would force her to feel even if it killed her. Thankfully Ilian still felt a sense of responsibility for her safety given that she did ultimately spare him, so he valiantly fought her to keep her in the cave. If Octavia had been fully healed it’s likely she’d have easily overpowered him, but her still mending injuries did give Ilian a bit of an advantage. Realizing that he was just going to keep forcing her back in the cave it became evident to her that she was going to have to compromise so she instead decided to use him as her way to feel something. She basically forced herself on him, though, to Ilian’s credit he did try to push her away, but ultimately he did stop fighting her. I guess he figured this was a better option than explaining why he let Octavia commit suicide by toxic radioactive rain. It was an intense scene that really showed off an unhinged Octavia in a way that they’ve not shown in a very long time, if ever. Marie Avgeropolous definitely didn’t make things easy on Chai Romruen who was visibly struggling to hold onto her as Ilian pulled Octavia back. The scene was intense and the tough subject matter was respectfully handled and the acting was standout by both performers. It was a very poignant scene that tackled some very dark subject matter.
Justyna K: It was a lovely, charming and simple episode. It played around with a few well known concepts, showcased the wonderful voices of the cast and provided a lighter tone after the last few darker episodes of The Flash. It may not have been especially clever or original but it was just perfect for a musical crossover it set out to be. I very much enjoyed it and thought all the songs were well done and memorable ('Superfriends' duet!). But nothing quite as special as the final scene of the hour. I should point out that I've never really been too focused on any romantic relationship on the show, but still, I found the scene to be exceptionally beautiful and moving. Not only were the lyrics and music perfectly suited and Grant Gustin's performance exactly right but I loved the genuine reaction from Iris and her talented portrayal Candice Patton. The scene was absolutely heartwarming. And after everything this couple has been through lately, this was the perfect proposal they both deserved. I'd say it's easily one of my favorite moments with these two. Kudos to cast & crew for the wonderful episode and this special scene!
Samantha: Barry proposes to Iris again. The musical episode on a whole was a bit of a letdown & I'm not exactly a regular viewer, but that end scene with Barry singing as he proposed again was adorable.
Diana: This musical episode really got me dancing! I liked Melissa and Grant dancing and singing, it feels like Glee all over again! I loved the scene in which Barry and Kara realize they have to sing in order to get out of the spell. Their duet really impressed me. Bravo!
Saloni: Barry and Kara singing 'Superfriends'. For me, it was the best song from the musical episode and Grant and Melissa brought the right amount of goofiness + cuteness to the whole video. Kudos to Rachel Bloom for writing such a fun song, she never disappoints.
Donna: Barry proposing to Iris via song was beautiful.

THE WALKING DEAD, "The Other Side", March 19, 2017, Actors: Norman Reedus, Lauren Cohan
The Scene: Daryl and Maggie's talk as they hide
Saloni: Daryl and Maggie's conversation as they hide from the Saviors. I'm glad they showed this. Daryl needed to hear from Maggie that he's not to be blamed for Glenn's death. Both of them were really good in the scene. It was short but perfect.

TVLINE | Tell me something good about the finale.

It’s the first time we see the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse in action in the real world. They are actually, for the first time, galloping on Earth. We see how powerful they are and what they can do. That represents, essentially, the ultimate challenge for our team. It’s something that, not even back in Seasons 1 and 2, that Crane and Abbie had faced. They had one or two of the horsemen, but this is the full team riding, and under Dreyfuss’ control. So that’s a big thing, just in terms of action and plot… [Also], you’ll learn why the motto of our country is “E pluribus unum.”
Thankfully this episode not only lived up to expectations but far exceeded them. Sleepy Hollow was a brilliant show in its first season then got bogged down in its own mythology in its second and third seasons. Though, to be fair, this show has a very rich mythology so it's easy to understand why the writers wanted to get so deep into it. Even with the ups and downs, this has always been a very interesting series with exceptional chemistry between all the cast members that have come and gone. The exit of Nicole Beharie (Abbie Mills) from the series forced an unexpected reboot as the show just squeaked into a fourth season. Thankfully the producers must have made a hell of a pitch to the network executives because the show defied the odds by earning this well-deserved fourth season despite that major shakeup. Choosing to keep Sleepy Hollow was a smart decision on the part of FOX and with any luck they’ll let it continue. This entire season has been a prime example of how a show can reinvent itself mid run and do it successfully. Janina Gavankar (Diana Thomas), Oona Yaffe (Molly Thomas), Rachel Melvin (Alex Norwood), and Jerry MacKinnon (Jake Wells) were all extraordinary additions to the series as they joined series veterans Tom Mison (Ichabod Crane) and Lyndie Greenwood (Jenny Mills). This team ended up being the perfect marriage of the new and old which helped to preserve the essence of the series while breathing much needed new life into it.

The big twist in this season was that the new witness was just a young girl. That was a creatively brilliant idea to change things up, but it also put a strain on how far the writers could develop the bond between the witnesses. Crane’s bond was arguably stronger with Molly’s mom, Diana, than his fellow witness, but he did develop a sweet relationship with young Molly. By the writers bringing in Lara (Seychelle Gabriel) they were able to preserve Molly as the witness, but allow her to get deeper into the action as Lara. To really ingrain Lara into the group they needed to spend a significant amount of time with her while sidelining Ichabod for a good portion of the episode as Lara came into her own. Some might call foul on this since Crane is the center of the series, but for the plot of the episode, it was necessary. Crane might have been missing for a fair part of the middle of the episode, but he was the driving force behind everything the team was doing.

As the episode opened, the show jumped forward to Lara’s time to give viewers a small taste of what Malcolm’s (Jeremy Davies) dystopian future was like. As terrifying as it is, that future with Malcolm at the helm isn’t all that improbable. They smartly chose to ground this future in realistic probabilities, you know, minus the demons and horsemen running around. Lara had a tough go at life after she lost her mom to Malcolm’s evil plan. What makes things worse for Lara is that by the time she’s able to open her eyes to the truth it’s too late to undo so many horrific things she’s done for Malcolm. Jenny says that she failed Diana as War kills her, but in truth, she actually succeeded in saving them all. By cutting open the mask of War she allowed Lara a quick glimpse at the truth and that’s when all the pieces started to come together for her. She is her mother’s daughter and sprung into action the moment she realized the truth.

Lara was already starting to seriously doubt Malcolm when she encountered Crane. That was the final straw that broke Malcolm’s elaborately weaved web of lies. He stole her life from her and Crane was giving her the knowledge to try and reclaim some semblance of it. Everything rested in her hands at that point and she made a very brave choice to charge full force into the temporal abyss to try to change the past. I think the fact that she saw that Malcolm was prepared to kill her made it clear to her that he wasn’t the man she thought he was. It was quite evident that at the end of the last episode, when she was pleading with him to pick another War, she didn’t entirely believe what she was saying about him being a good man under it all. She seemed to really want to believe it because he was like her father, but the damage done by his lies was irreparable. Her desperate plea was simply her last ditch effort to try to stop her future from happening.

Ironically, she succeeded, but not quite in the way anyone expected. The show made a very odd editing choice, as they cut back into the present day a few seconds before they had ended the prior episode and threw in an extra exchange where Lara notes, in awe, that she saved her mom. There is this nice beat where both Lara and Diana seem relieved. All short lived of course, as the scene picks up where things left off with Crane becoming War.

Interestingly, when Diana jumps back from Crane, as he fully transforms into War, she reaches her arm out to presumably motion Lara out of the way of danger. She’d allowed Lara to stand in front of her and take on Malcolm in the prior episode, but in her defense, she was in a bit of shock at learning the woman who had been giving the team so much trouble was, in fact, her own daughter from the future. In this episode, her motherly instincts were in full gear as the shock cleared away. The two of them slowly figured out how to work together, but not without a few bumps in the road.

To establish Lara it was important for the episode to spend a lot of time with her and Diana, and the show did that by thrusting them into a situation where they were forced to work together for a common goal. Diana effectively went from the mother of one to a mother of two, because as Lara pointed out she and young Molly are the same person, but yet still different. While it’s an awkward situation, Diana was a class act throughout. She let Lara speak freely without judging her and even tried to absolve her daughter of the evil acts she committed for Malcolm. It's obvious that a lot of dark and awful things happened to Lara after her mom was ripped away from her. Hopefully, the season finale will elaborate a little more on exactly what she did for him.

It’s not until Diana firmly states that she’s just glad that Lara survived, that her daughter is able to look at her again. This seems to be the turning point for them where Lara really starts to let down her guard with her mom. By the time they reach the cabin she’s even teasing her mom much like young Molly does at times. There is a growing yet still somewhat tense bond forming between them at this point. They are each trying to figure out what sort of relationship they can have given their new dynamic.

When she was injured in Crane’s memory Diana didn’t hesitate even a second before pulling Lara into her arms. The moment Crane was free from his confines he immediately ran to Lara and also wrapped her in his arms. In both realms, Lara was safely secured in the arms of the two people who arguably care about her the most of anyone. Both Diana and Crane could care less that she wasn’t the Molly they knew. She was still Molly and they both embraced her as such letting her know that she wasn’t alone anymore and never would be again. It’s quite ironic that Lara literally gave up everything to try to save her mom and in return, she got everything she didn’t realize she wanted.

The transition from Lara being in Crane’s arms to back in her mom’s was a powerful image as the bright white light consumed all. In that moment she was effectively reborn in her mom’s arms. Once Lara regained her senses, she was quick to fall back into an old rhythm with her mom even trying to secure her younger self a new phone and fancy earrings. Should young Molly and Lara ever actually meet Diana is in serious trouble. It’s hard to deny one, but both might be impossible. They needed that very light and humorous mother/daughter moment, after all, they’d been through. They still have a lot to work through, but it’s clear that Lara is kind of stuck in this time since she doesn’t really have a future to go back to, so they’ve ironically got time. The show, perhaps not, but with any luck, the season finale will leave them in a good place where fans can imagine what Lara’s new life looks like with her mom and her younger self.

Janina Gavankar and Seychelle Gabriel look a lot alike and even have a lot of similar mannerisms. The way that they each smirk is very similar and the way they move is eerily comparable. It would be very easy to buy them as sisters, but mother and daughter isn’t what first comes to mind. Yet, when Lara and Diana were having their deep chats, Gavankar exuded a very motherly energy when acting with Gabriel, which really helped to build the dynamic between their characters. While Gavankar is an exceptional actress, Gabriel can’t be dismissed for the critical part she played too, not just in the Diana/Lara aspect of the story, but the episode as a whole. Anyone who saw her on Falling Skies can attest to her immense skill. They found this brilliant middle ground for their characters to operate within as they found their rhythm right along with the characters. Should a miracle happen (one can hope against the odds) and the show get renewed Seychelle Gabriel had better be made a series regular in a hypothetical Season Five. There is so much the writers can do to dive into this new dynamic that Lara and Diana have found themselves in. It would also be quite interesting to see young Molly and Lara interact at some point. Will Diana invite Lara into her home or would that be too weird? Will Lara end up crashing with Crane? With Jenny? In the vault? I think Diana will go all overprotective mom on her and force Lara to come home with her. No matter how old Lara is, or what her name is, she’s still Molly and Diana won’t let her daughter ever feel alone again.

The growing bond between Lara and Diana was in stark contrast to that between Henry (John Noble) and his father. It was kind of disappointing that they didn’t really get to interact, but there is always the season finale for that. This episode could only handle one reunion between a parent and grown adult child. Though, it’s clear that Henry’s reunion with his dad wouldn’t have gone nearly as well as Lara’s. Even the Henry born of Crane’s memories is a psychopath hell bent on doing the complete opposite of what his father wishes for him to do. Henry and Crane can’t have the relationship that they both want because Henry won’t allow it. Crane has an immense capacity to care and love if only his son would find a way to be open to that. Now that he’s free, there is no telling what diabolical stuff he’ll get into with Malcolm. One thing is for sure, no good will come from it. Still, any chance to see Noble at work is worth having diabolical Henry around. Noble is without a doubt a phenomenal performer and an absolute pleasure to watch work.

While Crane was fighting his internal demons, and Diana and Lara were off on their bonding mission, the others were left to quite literally fight a war against zombies. Alex and Jake have grown so much as characters this season. They've both become exceptional and important members of this team. They had a mission and none of them backed down. They were fighting right down to the moment where it looked like they’d been overpowered. Their fight sequences were not only fun to watch, but they were visually stunning. The battlefield with the ghostly soldiers and the eerie setting made the scene play very well. Jenny led them well in this fight, but they held their own.

The Jenny that was first introduced in Season One is so different from the woman she has become. She has been a great mentor and her belief in the others was their inspiration before they charged head first into a battle where the odds weren’t even remotely on their side. She’s been through a lot and lost a lot, but through it all, she has remained loyal to Crane. She might not be a witness, but she’s the person that every witness should want at their side. There is a strong temptation for Jenny to leave and run off back to her old life of collecting, but hopefully, this battle helped her realize how much the team needs her. Not just for her incredible fighting skills and magical know how, but because she’s a part of their odd little family and for them to succeed they all need to be together.

She has a drive to never give up no matter the crazy odds. That was proven in the glimpse into Lara’s future. That was about as dark a future as possible, yet Jenny was still fighting the good fight. She was still desperately trying to save the world and Diana, but more importantly, she was trying to do right by Diana and Crane as she tried to save Lara. At this point, Jenny had probably accepted that they’d lost them both and was just trying to find some salvation in the whole horrific situation. As noted at the start of this review, future Jenny may have lost her life in the end, but she did ultimately succeed as she kick-started Lara down the path that led her on her epic time traveling journey. In a roundabout way, Jenny was actually the hero of this episode, because none of it would have happened had future Jenny not set off this series of events that led to the good guys having a shot at winning.

Crane was instrumental in everything as well. Jenny set Lara down the path to redemption, but future Crane gave her the tools to get to the future. As Lara admitted, she tried to deny her bond to Crane, but she could never fully suppress it. They have something truly special that can only be shared between two witnesses. Mison and Gabriel had a very good dynamic in the scenes they shared in Crane’s mind. She can easily hold her own with him and he very quickly worked out a really strong witness bond with her. Lara isn’t Abbie, but she has a strong will and incredible energy just like her predecessor. She is a worthy warrior to fill Abbie’s witness spot at Crane’s side. With her fighting for him, he was able to break free as their combined strength was too much for even War to subdue. Luckily Crane was able to maintain control over War long enough to help the others in their brave fight. Crane and Lara were both effectively reborn as they burst back into the fight. The witnesses are reunited as capable warriors and ready to confront whatever comes next as a united team. Which given what Henry and Malcolm are up to promises to be quite a major fight.
The sad reality here is that this mother/daughter across time reunion and the return of Henry really kicked the show up a gear just in time for it to possibly get canceled. While the ratings don’t appropriately reflect it, this has been one of the best seasons of the series to date.
Hopefully, FOX will have one of its odd generous moments where it renews the show just because it can. At the very least it would be nice for the network to give the show at least one final season to end the show appropriately. The odds aren’t great, but not great isn’t impossible. Sleepy Hollow likes to continually defy the odds, so who knows, but if this is the penultimate episode of the series at least it was an exceptionally strong one.
Maybe it’ll be the series finale or perhaps Sleepy Hollow will turn into a phoenix and rise from the ashes of the ratings abyss for one final swan song season. Either way, the season finale is one that surely can’t be missed.
Hit the comments with your thoughts. Do you want Lara to stick around? Did you like Lara and Diana working together? Will being War somehow connect Henry and Crane? Will Molly and Lara ever meet? Will Jenny stick around and not leave the team? Do you think this is the end of the series?
