'BLACK SUNDAY' REVIEW

Well Heathens, let's pound the witch drums one final time. It's Black Sunday, and with it, the very final episode of Salem. To say I am overcome with grief would be an understatement and I had so many feels during this episode. It took me a while to take the courage to play the episode, knowing that it would be over in 48 minutes. But, my fellow witches, I am genuinely happy with how the finale turned out (despite some minor things I will discuss in this review), and more importantly, the entire Salem saga from start to finish.

I seem to always struggle with where to start when it comes to Salem these days due to the amount of story and action that occurs within a single episode. The penultimate episode ended with Anne opening the door to Hell, instantly resurrecting the Devil inside the Frankenstein's Monster-like body of little John. I know a lot of people were stunned and that one action of opening the door caused many fans' hearts to palpitate. Fortunately we got to see exactly what happened next, like the second part of a mega-finale where the intensity of the approaching Black Sunday just continues. There are still minutes to spare before midnight, the witching hour where everything happens, so there is still time for things to change.

'I believe neither of us ever loved anybody but her our whole lives.'

John is still working on stopping the Red Mercury from killing all of Salem, but major problem - Sebastian has switched sides, so he can't even rely on his own complex nemesis to Mary's heart anymore. The fight between John and Sebastian, much like John's fight with the Sentinel, is brutal. I've also noticed that John is getting himself into a lot of physical fights lately, I mean we could almost paint him as some kind of wild, violent man if we didn't know him better. Sebastian probably shouldn't have told him that he failed to change Mary's heart, and should have kept trying to ruin his love for Mary, but I guess his confession also helped get John and Mary back together again. Mixed feelings about Sebastian at the minute. I've always felt fairly sorry for Sebastian to be caught in a love story he was never going to win, so when John fatally stabs him in the neck (surprising moment), and Sebastian reveals his motives that we really knew all along, it did humanise him somewhat. It wasn't to the same impact of the Sentinel though, but still, he died on the cusp of the side of good and evil, where Mary really was his only tie to his humanity.

'You have thousands and thousands of years to wish you

would've honoured our marriage and treated me better.'

...

'I prefer this.'

With the Devil being back in Little John's stitched-up body, I did not expect a fully grown man to come out of him. I really enjoyed the performance of the adult Devil, even if it was mainly in relation to getting his mother in bed. The scene in the hallway, after Anne fetches Cotton, was truly a highlight of the episode. I'm going to say it now, but Anne stole the show in this finale. She has been groomed to the dark side for a long time now, but the confrontation with Cotton in the previous episode completely broke her. What a life-changing event to occur as so much could have been avoided had Cotton not seen Gloriana. But, after being trapped in the mirror, Anne releases him and takes him to the Devil. He is given a choice that will save all of the souls in Salem - he willingly sacrifices his soul by stepping through the door into Hell, or Salem will be vaporised. Gloriana was an incentive as Cotton wanted to save her, and Anne taunts him to no end.

I can't believe that Cotton would be a casualty pretty early on in the episode. If anything, it revved up the ante to a billion before most of the action could even occur. I expected Cotton, the good soul that he is, to survive and maybe live happily with Gloriana. Oh no. If anything, this finale was definitely true to the tone of the show - that bleak, deliciously-evil tone that made me fall in love with this show in the beginning. Out of everyone who perished or were doomed, Cotton got the best "end". His willing sacrifice elevated his status as a hero, staying true to the innate goodness and rejection to kneel before Evil. Fair enough, he gave Anne exactly what she wanted, but he saved everyone in Salem in the process AND he delivered some of the best burns of the series. He went down swinging and got a few punches in, and if anything, he has left a long-lasting effect on Anne.

'You will feel like ... well ... a new woman.'

Anne. From heroine to villain, I feel like, along with Mary, she has had such a transformation of character over the course of three seasons. The sacrifice of Cotton was only the start of a domino effect of the terror Anne subjects the others to. As much as Mary is always my ultimate bae, she herself sat this one mainly on the sidelines as opposed to the adventuring, sinister Anne. I cannot begin to fathom the complexities of her evil. Poor Mary becomes subjected to a bodily takeover by the Countess Marburg, something that was planted a few episodes before and something Sebastian had been working on all season. Trust Anne to do a man's job in one single day. I've been looking forward to the return of the Countess all season, the addition of Lucy Lawless' voice in various episodes were always a pleasure to listen to.

I cannot begin to express how much I loved it when the Countess embodied Mary. I could not get over the moment the Countess began speaking through Mary - Janet Montgomery did a fantastic job in carrying this performance with the mannerisms and even way she delivered her lines. I could just picture Lucy Lawless whenever Mary would talk, and the ways she would smile and throw a look and you'd have to think about what she is thinking. It was beautiful. It gave me life. It was such good timing, too, when John finds Mary in bed, allowing them some time to talk and for Mary to tell him what Anne and the Countess had done to her, just before biting his earlobe off. Ouch. The love between them was definitely felt before the biting incident, and it was very necessary for the switch of bodies due to the Essex tree keeping Mary grounded in Salem - yet with Mary in the Countess' body and vice versa, Anne, surprisingly, gave John and Mary the happy ending they so desperately wanted. They are able to leave Salem, something they've wanted for such a long time. I will discuss this scene more later, first I want to revel in the evil things Anne did.

'Maybe, with you, I shall have a happy childhood.'

So 'Mary' and the Devil need to consummate if she is going to be his bride, and how weird it was to have Anne walk in and watch and seem, for a moment, to participate, just before bringing the knife down on the Devil. Not just any knife, but the angel-killing knife. It was a very easy death of this new Devil, which surprised me and I didn't think it would be 'over' just like that. Of course, the Countess was not at all pleased, but then she saw the murderous evil glimmering in her daughter's eye, and instantly she knew she made a mistake to question Anne. How quickly every other witch in Salem loses any kind of power or will against Anne - she is legit the ultimate force, no questions asked. Nobody can stand up to her. The poor Countess, finally getting what she wants after such a long, long time, now suffers to death at the hands of her daughter. Anne has had a taste for power and she wants it all. Now she wants to be the Devil's bride - so she's going back to the beginning by birthing him, and then will finally release him from Hell so they can rule the world together. So much effort to get him here to begin with and Anne gets rid of all that hard work in one fell swoop.

There can be no one to challenge her, no witch left in Salem that could overthrow her. It seemed like she was extending a lifeline to Isaac, another good soul like Cotton who stays true to his self. I am glad Mercy let him go, as much as it pained her, but it allowed him to reunite with Dorcas. But only briefly. Anne reveals herself to him, and Isaac is disappointed. I don't blame him if he has trust issues - everyone seems to be a witch these days, it's all the craze. I liked that Salem was basically destroying itself without the need of Red Mercury, and poor Isaac couldn't stop them. But Anne tells him he would make a better leader than Hathorne, but Isaac rejects any kind of power. He has seen how it corrupts, as it has done Anne, and the all-wise fornicator has shown explicitly the reason why he is yet another hero in Salem. Like Cotton, he chooses the right path, not the easy one.

'Be with your love.'

And poor Mercy. I actually was expecting her to ditch Hathorne at the first sign of trouble, when he would be only a hindrance to her. But, surprisingly, the speeches of love and the showcasing of such powerful emotion proves that Mercy had, sort of, reformed in the end. I'll always be rather surprised at the love connection of Hathorne and Mercy, how sudden it kind of was, and how quickly they married and, ultimately, died for each other. I have to hand it to Elise Eberle, she gave a powerhouse performance when Anne started choking Hathorne. What a cruel, awful thing to have to witness when Mercy has already declared that all she wants is to love and have love in return - and she's finally found it. For Anne to take that from her, well, it only furthered Anne's moral descent. It's so painful to watch Hathorne choking in the air as if on some invisible noose, and then for Anne to allow Mercy to join him in death... there are no words. As problematic as Mercy has been, and how removed she has been from the main plot, it's still an awful way to go. Great, though, because it was a phenomenal scene, but still so awful for her. I know people weren't the biggest fan of Mercy this season, but you would have to be pretty heartless to have not felt something for her in her final moments.

But one thing I am very disappointed with, in all honesty, is what happened to Tituba in this finale. She did nothing. I mean, nothing. Her appearance was so brief and it was over so quickly that her ultimate fate, mouthless in a cage on a ship in the middle of the sea, is like a perfect metaphor to how her character was in the series finale. After how important Tituba has been in the past, and even in this season in stitching back up the body of little John, there was no agency at all here. She was just as powerless as Mary, Mercy, and everyone else. As a seer, she did a very poor job in seeing, well, anything. She had so many possibilities, she could have been a faux-villain to Mary and the others and could have turned out to be on their side, but instead, she got absolutely nowhere and nothing in return. Only solace is that she's not dead, but her fate is so undeserving of such an influential character in the show that I do have a bit of a sour taste when recollecting her 2 minute screen-time. Why couldn't she have done more or said more? Fight back! I wanted her to go out with a bang, not a whimper.

'We have been ruled by witches all along. And not, as we thought from the outside, but in the very worst way, from within.'

I guess the only happy endings were reserved for Mary, John, and Anne. I love that Mary got to be happy - she really, really deserves it - but it's also bittersweet at the same time. She's lost her friends, including Isaac, who is absent for the scene at the end at the church. The sun is shining, it's a day we never thought we'd see in Salem, it's almost like life can continue with no worries. Never the case with Salem - there is always more, something under the surface to ensure that nothing can ever truly be happy. Anne has assumed the role of Cotton as speaker to the people, the guiding light of hope for the future of the town. She's a little honest with them in revealing the true villains that tried to bring Salem down were witches on the inside - but plays the ultimate deception game. Fortunately, we have little Dorcas there, who may grow up to take Anne down - but Isaac is absent. I doubt Dorcas would have been there without him, so I'm sure he'll be dead. Anne would not have let him live otherwise as he knows way too much about her. Anne is going to be rule Salem, give birth to the future Lucifer, and do it all again. Will she succeed? Without Mary and our other heroes in the picture, she just might. Loved the zooming in on her face in the Sibley house, with the music intensifying as it closes in and she looks at the camera. Oof. Amazing.

Evil. Beautifully evil! I was shouting at Cotton to run back up those stairs and to go no further, but he had to see what he had gotten himself into. I didn't think we would go back to him after losing him before the 20 minute mark of the finale, but it was a pleasant surprise. I love the look of Hell! It looks awful and amazing. It's interesting they would introduce this as the very final scene of Salem - the screaming, the fire, the white noise, Cotton screaming. The good has lost. Evil has won. And now we know Cotton is burning forever in Hell, and that Anne is reigning supreme. It's so unsettling to end on that image, but in all honesty, for this type of show, I wouldn't have wanted it to end any other way.

Incredible. A final, triumphant hour of Salem that will forever please and unsettle me when I recollect this show for years to come. While I would have preferred a bit more for characters such as Tituba, and for Mary to have had a bit more agency, I am so impressed with how this series finale turned out. So, so many brilliant scenes - highlighting the sacrifice of Cotton and the Countess taking over Mary's body - amongst the deliciously evil rise of Anne. Mary went from villain to heroine in the course of the show, while Anne went from heroine to villain. We should have seen this coming, but I for one am so shocked by her actions, and yet I loved every minute. I enjoy the fact that we got an ending for our Mary, so in effect, the show can end with her, but we also have this sense of another dawn in Salem - a possible continuation, perhaps even darker than the first.
Funniest Line: Countess as Mary: 'Pity. But then again, he was always the weak one. And it's all for such a good cause.'
While we would love more, a season four and beyond, we instead got a complete 36-episode story, a beginning, middle and end, and we should definitely count ourselves lucky. A lot of shows have been cancelled long before their time, sometimes without warning so they couldn't wrap things up. WGN America allowed the writers of the show to deliver to us fans the final chapter we deserved. I cannot thank them enough. I've had my heart broken in the past with cancellations of some of my favourite shows (I will never get over Witches of East End), but it proves that we had a network, a crew and a cast dedicated to giving the fans a story we could follow and love.

I am sad I won't be posting regular reviews of Salem anymore. I want to thank absolutely everyone who has followed the reviews for the past 2 years, since I joined SpoilerTV in August 2014 and took over reviewing the show from the start of season 2. I have enjoyed being able to discuss everything about this show with all of you, so thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for enriching my experience of Salem by sharing your thoughts on the show and my reviews.

In the future, I do want to do a complete Salem review, from season one through three, as a sort of series retrospective. My love for this show knows no bounds, and I want Salem to live on forever for the loyal Heathens. Usually I leave a promo for the next episode at the end of my reviews, but since there shall be no more episodes, I will leave the video for the first ever teaser trailer for Salem, released December 2013 on YouTube, and the iconic opening credits.

Below is the special thank you to fans from Brannon Braga and Adam Simon:
It took me such a long time to actually click the play button on this one because I knew that, in 48 minutes, it would be over. All over. That's it. Whatever would happen, nothing else would change it. There's always that sense with series finales that you worry it won't go the way you want it to, or it will miss something that it will never get back to, and you panic. You panic because the series finale, if you made it through seasons and seasons and you're still there to tune in, can either go one of two ways - the good way, or the bad way. I won't even be able to reveal very much in this preview to keep it spoiler-free, so you guys can still enjoy this episode when it airs, but as a loyal fan of this show from the very, very beginning, I believe, in my heart of hearts, that this series finale was incredible. From start to finish, the action from the penultimate episode carries over into this one, expanding on that heart-wrenching sense of time ticking by and ultimate danger literally everywhere in Salem. There is so much that happens, like so, so much that happens, that you'll probably find yourself reaching for your heart every five minutes.

So, without giving too much away, the penultimate episode ended with Anne opening the door to Hell, allowing the Devil to re-enter the stitched-up body of Mary's son. It was a huge moment as it was something Mary and co. had been working on all season to prevent from happening, Black Sunday, and it is actually upon us. Gah. I cannot even say how this will play out really, like seriously one mention of what happens and I've ruined it. But fear not, I will have to do something a little different. I usually like to do paragraphs, but I'm going to have to give little teases instead that hopefully get you excited for this episode.

TEASERS:

The episode picks up exactly where we left off. The Devil is back, and he greets Mary and Anne, with the intent of still wedding Mary for his ultimate plan to work.

There is still a small part at the beginning of the episode dealing with John trying to stop the Red Mercury from destroying Salem. He either manages to pull it off and save Salem, or he doesn't. Either way, that part of the story will be dealt with relatively early so the rest of the episode can primarily focus on the happenings inside of the Sibley house.

Remember when Mary used to be so obsessed with power in season one, and married George Sibley so she could rule Salem? It seems Anne has had a taste for this power and with her recent turn to the dark side, she further plunges herself into the darkness. Is she a lost cause? There's a scene with Cotton and Anne that will tell you if there's any hope to save the pure Anne from her wicked path.

Cotton is given a truly life-changing choice, and may or may not be a hero for his decision.

What happened to Mary in episode 8 with the Countess, where she fainted in front of the mirror, will be further explored and developed. All I can say is, this gave me such delight. I loved every minute of Mary's storyline in this finale.

Love can prove either fatal or a blessing for some of our couples.

We get to see what Hell looks like. It's gloriously dark and evil and everything I hoped it would be.

The finale is a bloodbath. A lot of people's stories are either wrapped up, end abruptly, or have the potential for a new beginning.

Speaking of new beginnings, despite this being a series finale, there is a very small glimpse into what could happen next - and it's wonderful.

DIALOGUE TEASERS:

'I just couldn't bare to live without her.'

'I don't know whether to kill her or kiss her.'

'Let us live to fight another day.'

'A fool knows a foolish path.'

'I'm sorry for everything I did.'

'I could kill you.'

'I warned Mary about you.'

'Maybe, with you, I shall have a happy childhood.'

I'm also sorry for the lack of images in this preview too. WGN America haven't released any promotional episodic images for use. But all in all, I can say, this was an incredible finale. It has a lot of action, and a whole lot of heart, and it ended in a way I completely didn't expect. Now please let me go somewhere to cry while I mourn this wonderful show, and I'll see you all for the complete review of the episode after it airs. PLEASE TUNE IN HEATHENS!

Have any questions about the finale of 'Salem'? Let me know in the comments, and be sure to tune into the episode, the FINAL NEW EPISODE, airing on Wednesday, January 25th on WGN America at 9/8c.

'SATURDAY MOURNING' REVIEW

Oh how the tables have turned on Mary Sibley. It's happened so quickly, too, it appears as if nobody is actually on Mary's side except Cotton, who is trapped, and John, who is also trapped. Poor Mary is on her own! I enjoyed this penultimate episode immensely, the gravitas of the entire hour was hugely felt. The urgency that has lacked in certain episodes prior was cranked right up to maximum level right before the finale. I mean, I don't even know how I'm going to cope or what to expect from the next, final episode. I'm terrified. And sad, Oh, so sad.

I don't even know where to begin with this episode, seriously. I may get Mercy out of the way first actually, as it interlinked with some important parts including Gloriana and Cotton, and Isaac and Dorcas. What was so bizarre in the last episode with Mercy marrying Hathorne in the brothel only furthered the real reason Mercy is still around - to f*ck up the lives of those around her. I knew her game when she pointed Cotton in the direction of Gloriana, which, to be fair, was both a good and bad thing. Good, because I find Gloriana and Cotton so sweet and true to one another, it broke my heart when she just didn't know who he was anymore. BUT. One thing I do not approve of, no matter what Anne has done to him, he's a married man. He was in a good place with his wife. And just like that, he started to kiss a woman from his past. And in his mind, Anne has a baby with him. How quick he was willing to cheat on his pregnant wife is not something I was particularly impressed with, despite him being one of the 'good guys'. What is good anymore? His morals are so twisted. Yes, Anne has done awful things to him, but at that moment in time, he knew he had a pregnant wife and there was someone he loved from his past. His first instinct was to try and have sex with her. Not a good move for a good guy.

I'm not going to forgive Anne for what she's done, especially abducting a baby from the womb of Gloriana and for deceiving Cotton, but damn I couldn't stop myself from loving the confrontation between Anne and Cotton. I mean, I miss the pure and innocent Anne of season 1, and it's been frustrating to see her dabble in dark magic yet still try to cling onto what she perceived as right - now she's turned into a full-blown kick-ass bad witch. And I do love it. No more trying to convince herself she's doing the right thing. The confrontation worked in so many different ways. It allowed Anne to call out Cotton's hypocrisy of lying, and his own past of murdering innocents that I'm sure a lot of us have forgotten or overlooked at this point. The whiplash reaction of Anne turning from friend to fiend was very sudden, but a long time coming. I wouldn't take too kindly to being called a 'lying, vile, evil bitch.' Her pent-up rage was delicious to watch, and finally I found myself rooting for her to stop pretending to be someone she's not anymore and just embrace her true nature. Very surprised to see she would kill him so quickly too, maybe she wouldn't have even if Sebastian did stop her? Who knows?

Another flip to the dark side is Sebastian, who is also scorned by the rejection of someone he thought he loved. Very familiar in relation to Anne, his actual relation. It's easy to forget sometimes that Anne and Sebastian are related and they share a mother in the Countess. At first, I was getting a little tired at the beginning of the episode of the repeated "give me more of Mary's blood" and that was it, since it's all she's done this entire season is more, more, more. But now she's really working in getting her children to co-operate and she's done a fantastic job at manipulating them from her grave. I can't be the only one a little weirded out when she got them to kiss in front of her and she seems to get some pleasure from it. It's weird. She's encouraging the incest between her children. I mean, Salem has done some crazy things in the past, this is just another bonus piece of crazy. And weirdly, I love it.

Briefly going back to Mercy then and her scenes with Isaac, I was extremely touched by what Dorcas said to Isaac when Mercy lets her out of the cage. I think you would have to be sub-human to not have some kind of feeling during that scene. I mean, when she said "my heart will break if you die" - I felt like I'd been shot with a bullet of cuteness. Sweetest thing ever. I bet even Mercy and Hathorne felt it in the feels too, the way they looked at each other confirms it affected them somewhat. It was pretty stupid of Mercy to ask Isaac "did you do this?" when the mob led by Dorcas comes. Obviously, Mercy, Dorcas wouldn't just let you kill someone she loved and got the men to come save him. I'm with the crowd on this one, #FreeIsaac. If she had of just shown her compassion after Dorcas touched the world's heart, she wouldn't have this dilemma right now.

We now come to a point in the story where Marilyn Manson's use was to store the red mercury in the Devil's clock and hide it in plain sight in his barber's shop. I mean, it can be the most random of places to hide it if you weren't Marilyn Manson, I'm sure, but John discovering it was very handy indeed. John has always been pretty good at reading people (not counting the girl dressed as a boy, or Sebastian, or Mary, or Tituba, or...) but he was spot on with Thomas. Never seen him drunk nor nervous before, and it's a good job he observed this about him or he could have been his next victim. And what will Sebastian do with him now? I like that John was trying to disable the clock like a bomb, since it literally is a bomb, and for a moment, I thought it worked. Then it ticked again and that was when John knew he had failed. It would have been much less fun if he had of succeeded.

Finally, I can talk about the main bite of the episode - Tituba, her betrayal, and the final moments of this episode. It's what this entire season has been leading up to, Black Sunday, and it's literally upon us. Intense is not the word where it comes to the Mary and Tituba confrontation, as well as the Mary and Sebastian confrontation, and the Anne and Mary confrontation - a lot of confrontations in this episode. With Tituba, I've always wanted her to be on the same side as Mary. We get the idea that Tituba is bitter towards the imperialists and Puritans who ravished her home and destroyed her family, something Mary is sympathetic with. Is it just me, or is there still a part of me that thinks maybe Tituba could still be on Mary's side? It's just the way they parted, it had me a little suspicious. I wasn't a big fan of seeing a cat, any cat, be killed, so that wasn't very pleasant Mary! But it means Tituba is blind again, going into the final episode, she won't be able to see the havoc she's helped create.

But before the episode even ends, Mary, poor Mary who only wanted to protect the door from being opened, had to contend with a woman scorned. And Mary knows this all too well, remember, when she said at the beginning of the season that there's no force quite like it? Well Anne made her complete transformation by opening the door and allowing Hell to be welcome on Earth. Perfect timing for the Devil child to come back to life too. But the dialogue between Mary and Anne was so raw and passionate and dangerous, it really helped to elevate the episode even further in its final moments. Here we have two strong women, one from evil to good, and the other good to evil, with morals completely discoloured and confused. Never have I ever been so fearful of Anne before and what it is she's allowed to happen. It's safe to say that, even though the next episode is the last one ever, there is no coming back from this for her. Nothing will save hers, or even Salem's, soul now.

EPISODE VERDICT

I can't believe we are here, one episode before the finale, and we are just starting the end of the world that we have been building up to since, really, the very first episode of season one. I feel extremely satisfied, mortified and generally in love with this episode. The writers kicked everything up a notch and characters made very brutal choices that will change everything coming into this highly-anticipated finale next week. I don't even think I'm ready.

'FRIDAY'S KNIGHTS' REVIEW

I can definitely feel the pace quickening in these final few episodes, and the bodies are really starting to hit the floor. Having said that though, this episode was important to flip that on its head - the Devil child that was killed in the last episode may be coming back to life, as well as the Countess through the body of Mary Sibley. Potentially, anyway, who knows?

After a more pivotal role in the past few episodes, Mercy decided to get some payback on Isaac by kidnapping Dorkus (poor thing) at the very start of the episode. It was a creepy sequence with the camera flying low into the barn in the middle of the night. We all knew it wasn't Dorkus' mother that appeared there, and I was screaming at her to go wake Isaac up (though he may have been unconscious by supernatural means after the way he wakes up later, maybe). That hand coming into view was still a scary image, and it started this intense episode in the best possible way. Cue that awesome intro music.

We come to Mercy again with a pretty uncomfortable scene with her and Hathorne, though to them it must have been extremely romantic. It was the spanking scene. It just seemed brutal, way harder than necessary, and Mercy was loving it. It's extremely freaky, and then poor Dorkus had to watch/hear it all too. I am rooting for Isaac to save the poor girl. Then things took an even crazier turn - they got married! It was sooo bizarre and hilarious for all the wrong reasons, but how could it have went any differently in a brothel? The loud moaning of the Sentinel in the background as Cotton tried to give the ceremony was just fantastic. Cotton's speech about love and everything in that scene was actually perfect - the right blend of serious and comical.

This was the Sentinel's big episode, and despite him being a bad guy, I felt rather sorry for him by the end. All he wanted was for his brothers to be free so they could live happily ever after! I mean, sure, they would destroy Salem in the process and God knows what else, but I can understand where he was coming from. I also loved that Cotton sort of gave him his last day on Earth by letting him indulge in pleasures of the flesh - booze and boobs. Oh, and oranges. I have to admit, I shed a little tear when he said "I would have liked one more orange." Oh God. Writing it down again is making me tear up a little bit too. I never would have thought I'd feel for him in the end, but I do, I really do. But I'm also glad that's one obstacle over since it appears the deaths of other villains seem to be unravelling.

The fight scene between the Sentinel and John was pretty epic. I thought, for a heart-clenching moment, that Tituba gave him dud instructions to make the dagger, and that it wouldn't work. He had to stab the Sentinel a lot to kill him. I loved the effects with some of it, as he'd plunge the knife in and lightning would flash. It's a brutal, animal fight between the two (echoing Cotton's and the Sentinel's words in the pub about the metaphor of man), and it definitely gave John the meat he needed all season. He has floated a bit, dabbling with the Indians storyline that hasn't produced anything since they disappeared, and then as the third wheel in Mary's and Sebastian's weird love-making. I kinda choked with laughter when Sebastian brought his usefulness up in the barn. Burn.

I thought maybe Mercy and Anne would be part of it, but it seems like we are keeping the Salem Squad to just five - Mary, John, Sebastian, Cotton and Isaac. It seemed odd to have Isaac there for that discussion, but I absolutely loved his reunion with Mary. Seeing their friendship since the very first episode, to now, is an emotional, bumpy road. There's so much love for each other, something I wish we could have had more of this season. The barn scene was good at bringing the characters on a similar level with their common goals, though it was very sneaky of Sebastian to disguise as John and get the truth from Mary of how she felt about him. But surely he already knew that her heart belongs to John, not him. So deluded. He needed to hear the truth eventually.

It will be safe to say that Sebastian is definitely 'foe' now, with the Sentinel out of the way, and the Devil child for now, his only goal now, really, is to get payback on Mary. It's unfair though since he basically forced himself on Mary and gave her no choice but to play his sexual games, and then he throws a hissy fit when she doesn't give him the love he wants. The story with the Countess is the best thing about him at the minute, and it will be so interesting to see if drinking all of Mary's blood will allow the spirit of the Countess to possess Mary. Mary as the new Countess? I'm game, though I really, really do miss Lucy Lawless.

Tituba is a sneaky little witch, isn't she? We knew she was playing the Devil's game, but when he asked her to kill the Sentinel, it could have been a good double-double-cross, since getting rid of the Sentinel was a common goal for our heroes too. But now she has the boy's body and is stitching him back up? If she brings him back from Hell, there will probably be no redemption for her. Maybe she wants to be his bride and live past Black Sunday. Mary is starting to see through her; the questions she asked Tituba about sending John to kill the Sentinel and not the Devil himself made that clear. Now John knows one of the Devil's "agents" gave him the recipe to send a Fallen Angel back to hell. Isn't Tituba supposed to be a Seer? Why is she being so sloppy? She could have handled Mary's questions a little better, perhaps she should have foresaw her coming and not been so late at hiding the body.

Finally, Anne may just end up being the crux to Salem's undoing anyway if Tituba doesn't make it in time. She seems to be easily persuaded by the boy's voice. It was very chilling when she would look in the Sibley house model and then see the boy standing behind her. I am now very worried with her being so close to that Door to Hell. But I'm also so interested in seeing what would happen when it's open. And if it could be opened so easily, why didn't the Sentinel open it to free his brothers from the start? A side note though, I loved the scene with Cotton and Anne and her cravings. It was very adorable, and for a moment, I forgot all the terrible things Anne has done. Then I remembered and I felt sad, because I miss and long for the Anne and Cotton 1-2 seasons ago.

EPISODE VERDICT

I'm getting more and more worried for my characters as we move closer to the finale. There are so many allies being formed and betrayed that it's hard to know who will end up where in the next 2 episodes. Who will live long enough to see the finale? I do like the little touches that show the ticking time bomb that's about to explode on Salem, and the worry expressed by the characters really worries me too. I enjoyed this episode, as I do every episode, and with the uncertainty of what's to come, I couldn't be more excited for these next 2 episodes.

'THE MAN WHO WAS THURSDAY' REVIEW

It was a game changing episode written by Brian Peterson and Kelly Souders last night, that saw the end of the Dark Lord's reign, but with Black Sunday still upon us, does it even matter that he is gone? And is he even gone at all?

The biggest moment to happen in Salem was the apparent end of season three's biggest villain, and in theory, the biggest villain of all-time. How can you get bigger than Lucifer himself, the actual Devil? Having said that, if this is his actual end, I'm rather deflated. I wouldn't say it was an easy task to get to this point, but we have two more episodes and then we have the last episode ever! At least the villains of previous seasons - Increase and the Countess - lasted until their respective finales. The Devil? The darkest of all evil - he's dead with three episodes to spare? I don't buy it. I think we haven't seen the last of him, especially with that mysterious figure (Tituba?) at the end collecting his body parts.

Speaking of his body parts, it was a really awesome scene and spell. The build up itself was pretty good, and we do get that sense of urgency throughout whenever Mary is on screen. I really thought for a second that Sebastian might have betrayed Mary there, but then I should have known better - he loves her way too much to do that. I did get suspicious at how calm everyone was when he came to crash their party in the woods. Things escalated quickly when the Essex witches started to stab themselves, which was gruesome yet wonderful. I enjoyed seeing the boy get the vines to restrain him, then watched as every limb got torn from his body. Very Salem. But like I said, as much as I loved to see him get defeated, I kind of hope this isn't the last of him, despite Black Sunday still coming. As a villain, I was hoping for something with more fight for the final ever season.

But I can't talk about that death without mentioning everything else in the episode. Mary and Sebastian have a very weird relationship now, especially since he made John watch them have sex, basically. It's not something you'd necessarily want to see, so as we see as the episode progresses, it plays a psychological game with John, even after Mary's heartfelt letter. I like conflict, so seeing Mary and Sebastian fight the way they do yet have this irresistible urge also is good to watch for the drama, though it's going to make it hard for Mary to reconcile with John and move forward. All I can say is, I hope Mary and John are endgame. 3 episodes left and all this relationship drama needs to be swept under the rug.

I like how, in order to forge a knife, John needs to be shirtless. Yes please. That was a pretty nifty scene amongst the more serious ones, and it's always a welcome treat to see more of Shane West. He takes Tituba's advice to form the dagger that will kill the Sentinel, which is also based on the Devil's orders. Since he doesn't have anything to do with the Indians now, he now crosses paths with Issac, who is now the mayor of Knocker's Hole. He's pitting them against the Puritans, so I'm interested to see if this will spark a revolution between the poor and the Puritans. Issac has so much potential now and it's all in his grasp, but whether or not he acts on it is another matter.

One of the highlights of the episode was seeing the majestic masculine threesome - John, Issac and Cotton, together again. My boys rarely get time together these days, so this was an absolute treat. While Issac doesn't stick around, it was nice to see Cotton and John reconcile over their shared dilemmas of falling in love with complicated witches. With the end looming, we see each character own their place in the grand scheme of things, and both have a mission to do. They see that, and they see that it's connected to the women they've fallen in love with. Both women have done terrible things, but I'm hoping this redemptive arc for both Mary and Anne will pay off.

And Anne continues to do her dirty deeds, though she tries to justify them more in this episode. Is she wrong to think she'd be saving the child from a life of poverty? Maybe. Would the child be better with her and Cotton? Who could say. But this deed will not go unpunished, as that strange creature seems to have latched on to her for the act she has performed. Guilt personified? Will she come clean? Her loose ends seemed to be tied up now with her removing Gloriana's memory (in the most sickest of ways), and handing her off to Mercy to look after. Poor Gloriana, I do feel really, really bad for her. It does make me look at Anne in a whole new light.
I don't know why he's suddenly turned into this romantic sop, but that story he told her to make her feel better was actually about her, and how far she's come, and it got me right in the feels. Mercy gets a lot of stick, and I get it, she's not relevant to the bigger picture anymore, but it's nice to see what she's up to because I do like her storyline. It was also so great to see her interact with the other main characters too, especially Anne! Mercy delivers some killer lines and I loved her scenes with Anne. Anne acts like such a prude but Mercy sees right through her, especially when she collects Gloriana. I hope she can look after her, Gloriana has been to Hell and back!

EPISODE VERDICT

With 3 episodes to go, this one was a very big episode in terms of that gruesome death - but was that the end of the Dark Lord's reign in Salem? I doubt it. I can imagine this being some kind of curveball before Black Sunday, and I am still excited for it to happen. All in all, a very great episode for our characters in terms of development; it gave them more room to move.

'WEDNESDAY'S CHILD' REVIEW

The episode to air the day after the show was officially announced as cancelled, I must admit, it was very difficult to get a review out on time due to the news. To say I'm mortified would be an understatement. It wasn't necessarily a surprise, but to see 'Salem - Cancelled by WGN America' in one sentence was hard to digest. Still is. Wednesday's episode was perhaps perfect for the occasion then considering the ticking clock the characters are facing on the show, summed up with an air of finality by the Dark Lord himself.

'Married on Wednesday, bedded on Thursday, sickened on Friday, died on Saturday, buried on Sunday.'

Each episode title from now until episode 10 takes after a day of the week, and it is perhaps fitting that the show will be buried with the title of 'Black Sunday'. I've discussed the possibility of the end coming with the readers of the reviews in the past considering how big the scope is for season 3, and we have wondered how anything could get bigger than the Devil in Salem. Apparently nothing else can, and we end in four episodes time. If this is what is best for the story, and we get the perfect series finale to wrap everything up, then I can be happy in the knowledge that this show was able to tell its story from beginning to end and that this 'cancellation' is only an ending to a complete story. The word 'cancelled' in itself is an ugly term and distills negative connotations, but Salem is heading somewhere and it's going to finish the way it's supposed to.

Going onto the actual episode then, it was a huge one for Anne. When Gloriana returned at the end of the last episode seeking her baby daddy (Cotton), we knew Anne would not take this lightly. I shipped Cotton and Gloriana in season one and was super sad when she was banished, and her return was well worth the wait. Just as we thought Anne was back to her innocent season 1 self, we see her pull off an act that is rather monstrous - transferred Gloriana's baby into her own womb. Perhaps that is why she saw that hideous creature thing through the window, that Gloriana dreamed about. Maybe Anne is that hideous creature thing, since she made Gloriana's nightmare come true and Anne was the monster that stole it. Great scene in transferring the baby and I pitied Gloriana so much for trusting Anne. I wonder how long she'll be locked in that attic for. Surely Cotton will realise Anne is further along than she's supposed to be? Regardless, Anne closed the episode with a pretty chilling delivery of: 'I have done exactly what I promised I would do. I have ensured your child a healthy, happy life. One it could never have enjoyed as the bastard child of a whore. But one that is sure to enjoy as the beloved child of Cotton Mather and his wife, Anne Hale.'
As much as I liked Sebastian, I wasn't a fan of his actions against Mary in this episode. I usually found his lovelorn puppy persona to be rather endearing, but he went a little too far by forcing Mary to have sex in John Alden's bed - with John Alden in it! That's brutal! Effective, but brutal. Has Sebastian gone down in my estimations now? Yes. I thought he was a redeeming character, but this act has tipped him off the deep end. Now he has majorly pissed off John and Mary won't be happy about it, so I expect to see another body by the series finale.

After Isaac had a downfall from the very beginning of the show, season 3 has been his best season - he is really coming out on top! After his bold move against Mercy in the last episode, I was expecting some kind of repercussion here, but instead, it turns out it was the best thing he's ever done! Now he's basically dubbed the Mayor of Knocker's Hole and he has men now. Got to say I do love this side of him. His scene with Dorcas is as cute as ever, and it makes me more anxious that something truly terrible is going to happen to her, or Isaac, in the next couple of episodes. Things don't go smoothly in Salem, so it's only a matter of time now.

While it was touching that he would reject his freedom from her in the last episode, now he's proposing marriage! I'm hoping Mercy is double-crossing him, now using him only to exact revenge on her nemesis, Isaac. But at the minute, it seems rather genuine. It may also have to do with power, and Mercy loves power, so Hathorne's affections may be the only one that has come on too hasty. She didn't get to do an awful lot in this episode either, so I wonder where her story is going to take her for these next 4 episodes. She's got nothing to do with the bigger story, so how her story ends could go one of two ways.

EPISODE VERDICT

It's still hard to know we are over half-way through the final season. It's not quite real yet. Wednesday's episode was good, but perhaps one of the weaker ones of the season. Action moved relatively slowly here, even though we are building up to a huge, momentous occasion. Anne's story was the only one worthy of pace, and it was the highlight of the episode. With only 4 episodes left, I hope they're all jam-packed with action and movement so that we go full steam ahead to a finale we will never forget.
