About the Daily Ratings

Each day (except Sunday) during the main TV Season we post the TV Ratings for the previous nights primetime shows for the major broadcast networks (ABC, CBS, CW, FOX, NBC).
Cable Network ratings will be added to the Ratings Database. The Ratings Post is made available around 30 minutes before the normal
release of the Early Overnight Preliminary Ratings so give people a chance for a quick chat in the comments beforehand should they wish to do so.

Normally between 4pm-5pm GMT we post the official early overnight Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers in the table above. Finally, later in the evening (9pm-10pm GMT) or the
following day, the final adjusted ratings numbers are released, these are then posted in the Ratings Database as well as the above
tables.

The Final Adjusted numbers are what we use for all our Renew/Cancellation Tables, Full Season Tables, Ratings Scorecards etc . Friday's Final Adjusted Ratings are normally
available on the following Monday (9pm GMT), whilst Sunday's will be available on Tuesdays (3pm GMT).

SPOILERS AHEAD!

And, now...an ending.

But, of course, with every ending is a new beginning.

One generation passes on and another one is born to deal with what has been left behind for them.

It is easy to see why the producers made the Sydney Fleischmann directed episode, Generations, the final aired episode of this 4th and sadly final season of HBO's Room 104. From what I've read, they didn't intend for this season to be the last season of the anthology series, but, apparently, they were all expecting it to possibly be. This was, after all, a late night anthology series that was greenlit right before AT&T merged with Time Warner. Would this get greenlit in the era of HBO MAX? Hard to say, but it doesn't sound promising, but I'm referring to an alternative universe here.

Speaking of alternative universes, 4x12 Generations introduces one that I found to be strangely familiar. One where Shirley Jackson's The Lottery story is paired with...oh...I don't know.. Aniara, maybe? One complaint I had with the series was that it didn't venture into serious sci-fi enough. I refused to believe that the "Rogue" episode from Season 3 was the only storyline they could come up with apocalyptic overtones. This was, afterall, an anthology series about an average motel room where literally anything and everything could happen and usually for the worse (except, of course, for the motel exploding, or imploding for that matter). It wasn't enough that the producers decided to program a tragic dystopian story for the series' swansong. Oh, no. It also had to be a space opera.

This time, the story centers on Keir (The Chi, Treme and The Knick's
Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine), whom I can only assume was named after 2001: A Space Odyssey's Keir Dullea. Keir is in Room 104 preparing for what is known as the Generations celebration with an AI being named Agnes (Rebecca Hazlewood) who may or may not have more knowledge as to what is really going on than "she" leads on. If you've been watching this show enough, you probably have already guessed that that this celebration is probably more like a forced retirement/funeral. Yes, this futuristic society has decided to recreate the similarly politely brutal Japanese society of The Ballad of Narayama and get rid of their citizens to make room for the next generation. Why? Details are intentionally vague as usual, but it seems everyone in this society are living on a spaceship wherein they live in living quarters designed to resemble anonymous hotel rooms back on Earth to give them a sense of normalcy and false security during their pre-determined limited lives. It is never told who is running this ship, what kind of resources they are trying to salvage, or even what promised land this crew is headed toward.

No, this 1/2 hour episode is only concerned with one life on this spaceship to seemingly nowhere. Perhaps it's all a dream and everyone is really in a cryogenic sleep (or at least should be so they don't have to go through this "celebration" scam and watch every family member they know be selected for termination before their time while they wait their lives away in a makeshift motel room with a holographic sunny Earth backdrop). It could be argued that maybe every single episode of Room 104 was actually taking place in this universe since every story seemed to be specifically created for a different alternative universe designed specifically to suit a protagonist's psyche, but I will leave that up to the TV conspiracy theorists.

It is clear as the episode progresses that Agnes is the only real companion for Keir after his mother is selected for Celebration early on in his life. Sure, he later has a wife (Susan Park) who it is suggested was arranged to marry him by the powers that be before they were even born and had a daughter with her named Umoco (Kristina Hannah), but he is still living in a state of frustration that he had led an unfulfilled life in this false motel room. He adamantly reads the same book, even though Agnes urges him to try some new technology. This quiet rage consumes him as his Celebration time gets closer. He would fear that Umoco will have the same reaction to the truth of their rather modest existence and fears telling her what's what, but the memory of his wife telling him that she already knows and is OK with it sooths him at least a little, leading to a sweet father/daughter zero gravity dance scene that looks fine on the Season 4 Blu-Ray cover. Sadly, their bliss is short-lived.

The real sadness of the episode for me lied in the notion that this deceptive sci-fi world is actually very similar to the life experience many have in our regular lives. Many stay in the same vicinity their whole lives, have children, discover their average jobs they were forced to take to survive are a crock just designed to make money/ prop up the rich, then die feeling lonely and used. Is forcibly being tossed out of an airlock any different to dying all alone in a nursing home? Keir harbors anger at this society for deceiving him, but parents always deceive their children to protect them from some pretty harsh truths before they are ready.

Some of the best sci-fi stories are the ones that are allegories for what happens in our regular world. The problem here with this episode for me wasn't the emotion of the episode, it was the feeling of "been there, done that" I kept getting. Yes, we know that Keir will be selected for Celebration. Yes, we know that his daughter will be complicit in seeing him have to go while getting ready to have her own baby. Yes, we know Agnes will never age and probably knows more than she is letting on. But...what else? There are no real surprises here. Again, it's only a 1/2 hour show, so they cannot drown us in clunky exposition. The story structure is very mysterious and the script works b/c the plot is laid out as life experiences rather than simply revelations about the horrible society and the intergalactic mission. Is it Mars? One of the Saturn's moons? Pluto? Planet X? An asteroid headed toward another galaxy? We're never sure.

We are not given a lot of information here, which kind of makes the poignant emotion we're supposed to feel about Keir's Celebration a little awkward and anti-climatic. His wife is suggested to have been infertile, so they Celebrated her much younger than hat they're doing to Keir. Why was he allowed to grow so old? Is it because his daughter is mature enough to have her own baby and doesn't need his parenting anymore? At first, I though that the Celebration ceremony was a matter of reaching a certain age, but it looks like it just a matter of procreation pragmatism. Everyone eventually knows the truth of what is going on in order to accept these absurd societal rules, but that happens in almost every country in our own world as well. We don't need to be on a spaceship to know that the only way of really getting through all of it is to love one another and accept the given circumstances, no matter how inevitable they might be.

Even more sad than being forced into a Celebration ceremony in this story is knowing that death is going to happen to everyone. Maybe it will be a heart attack. Maybe it will be COVID-19. Maybe it will be someone murdering us. Maybe it will be a head-on traffic collision. We never know and often don't get a Celebration ceremony while we are alive with a pretty speech to give our descendants to remember us by. A wise comedian once said, "Death is a funny thing." Usually, that is the truth, but at least we can still write stories like the one in Generations where it doesn't necessarily have to be that way.

And for that alone, we can only hope HBO eventually allows the Duplass Brothers to make another visit to Room 104 before we are all forced out of our own airlocks.

WARNING: Please don't read if you haven't seen Room 104 4x11 Fur yet! SPOILERS AHEAD!

Well, if Supernatural could do it, why not Room 104? Make an unnecessary, but still memorably entertaining animated episode toward the end of its run, that is! It's clear that wirter/director Mel Eslyn enjoys concocting some seriously quirky and nostalgic ideas about what to do in Room 104 that doesn't involve the same ol' doom and gloom drama that we have grown used to seeing over the last four seasons, like in The Hikers, which was also about female friendship from a completely different angle. If there was ever a time when the post-episode interview with marc Duplass revealed that the story was inspired by something that happened in his childhood, I was hoping this would be it. Sadly, it was not and it was Eslyn who came up with the post-millennial feminist homage to cheesy 80s low-budget horror and female friendship that is 4x11 Fur.

And, sorry Nicole Kidman and Robert Downey Jr. fans, it has nothing to do with the 2006 Diane Arbus fantasy biopic. It ended up feeling like an unintentional harbinger to the upcoming Comedy Central Daria spin-off about the character, Jodie, but not really in a good way. Though it sure looked a lot like that classic aforementioned female-centric animated series and I'm sure that is no accident.

So, what could I be referring to for those who still haven't watched it yet (yes, I know you're out there lurking)? Here, we see the animated Finley (Jordyn Lucas) and Grey (Natasha Perez) lurking under one of the beds of Room 104, having snuck into the room for partying. It's 1987 and times are much more innocent (in spite of the AIDS epidemic that was happening simultaneously), and, frankly, even more misogynist. After the cleaning lady leaves unaware of what is being pulled literally right under her feet, we see the young women having a junk food fest and talking about boys and the joys and agonies of puberty, or are they? Finley is more developed than Grey and it drives Grey a little more than jealous. Finley shows Grey her blossoming leg hair and Grey fetishizes it since she doesn't have any yet.

Then, she cryptically asks about what Finley's first time was like. What is she referring to? Losing her virginity? Getting her first period? Of course not, silly. She's talking about becoming a teenage werewolf! Pretty lucky that this episode is airing the night after a blood full moon, huh? And, as any devotee of the Ginger Snaps trilogy already knows, using lycanthropy as a mensuration metaphor is a pretty appropriate idea. What was that horror trilogy lacking, though? Based on this, it didn't have enough animated situations, which this episode succeeds in in strides.

Of course, the young ladies don't show their cards too quickly. Being tween Regan-era 80s girls, they seem to be all about the boys. Also since they are young and impressionable, they seem to be a little too naïve, even for that era. They have invited an older, athletic, and most tellingly, popular boy, John (Jake Green) over to the motel room to have a little underage fun that, had this episode not been animated, would've changed the tone of this episode for the worse since John comes off as an entitled blonde creeper and potential statutory rapist from the get go. One whose essence, even in animated form, screams "toxic masculinity" even from the depths of his blonde roots.

For some reason, the young ladies don't seem to pick up on this right away and even entertain the idea of doing some unmentionable things with him that I am glad never transpired. And, since things don't go John's way, he responds by becoming a more attractive version of The Incredible Hulk by growing in size and strength (but not skin color, oddly enough) when a female resists his so-called charms the way any date rapist of that era probably would've, emotionally-speaking anyway.
Being a full fledged werewolf, Finley already knows how to handle such advances so she next transforms into her wolf form as Grey...well, hides in the bathroom, listening to electronic music on a cassette walkman (which, incidentally, doesn't exactly sound authentically 80s, IMHO) and reading a teen magazine, blissfully unaware of what is going on outside.

Finley and John proceed to fight without any interruption until Finley is injured slightly and Grey finally emerges. When she sees what is happening, her true womanly lycanthrop-ian colors start to emerge and she immediately becomes her werewolf form to save the night from John's rape-y assault. Clearly being a 90s narrative homage, Finley somehow gets the idea that the two friends should combine their powers -Captain Planet style - and merge into one werewolf being to finish John off, who just cannot get enough of beating up on girls smaller and younger than him. Without any respect to the laws of physics, they do just that and John is defeated, leaving them to recover from their psychic wounds and promise to always be there for each other, like any girlfriend characters of that era would do.

Watching this episode, I kept wondering if the writer/director was trying to pay homage or criticize the tropes of the 90s teen drama the way she did with the Kevin Nealon meta episode earlier this season? If so, it didn't feel sharp enough to be satire or criticism. Too willy nilly to be a cultural statement, also. The dance music video that ends the episode was a stylish and fleeting touch, but did it add anything to the narrative or subtext? Not really.

Are we meant to automatically equate being attractive to attempted rape and sexual conquest? Are rape victims to blame for inviting destructive forces into their own situations knowingly? Are they really "asking for it?" None of that is answered here, but is eerily implied. Frankly, it felt like the writer actually fetishizes these rather naïve, and even more unrealistic, cultural feminine and masculine stereotypes when I feel she should know better. Even Marc Duplass seemed a little uncomfortable talking about this episode in his interview clip. Maybe he just decided a male perspective on this issue would not be appreciated, so he just let the writer do what she wanted? Not sure, but in spite of the stylish fun on display, the whole thing left a bad aftertaste, like many a-teenage date night.

Sometimes, girls really do just wanna have some fun.

WARNING: Please don't read if you haven't seen Room 104 4x10 The Night Babby Died yet! SPOILERS AHEAD!

As Room 104's final season winds down on HBO, the season-long theme of creeping nostalgia and making peace with one's squandered youth doesn't seem to be letting up anytime soon.

For this tenth episode, two childhood companions, Abby (Kelly Reichardt regular Lily Gladstone) and Bruce (Westworld's Leonardo Nam) are reunited in our beloved titular room for the first time in over a decade. The plan was to go to a nice dinner for two, but then Bruce decided to ruin it all by unveiling his old video game Nintendo console. The game he wants to play? The fictional Crowning Glory 2, which has the aesthetic design of the very early 90s RPG games, like Dragon Warrior and so many others.

Why does he want to bring this game out of the woodwork into a cheap motel room? Well, to allude to the pre-shipping character they both created long ago known as "Babby," which is, naturally, a combination of their names. What caused Babby's demise, as the episode title refers to? Well, we're not sure, as Room 104 creative regulars Jenée LaMarque and Julian Wass's mysterious and ambiguous script dances around this ultimate elephant in the room in dramatically successful fashion. The answer probably isn't that interesting. Maybe they just grew apart? Maybe they had an argument over who was better at playing the game? We're never really sure. Sure, they waste time accusing each other of playing alone and destroying their game-playing synergy, but that is a moot point. All that matters now is that Bruce wants to live vicariously through the past and create a new character, "Abruce." Is it really such a bad idea? Should the past just remain gone but not forgotten? As usual, this is only a 1/2 hour episode, so ambiguity rules the structure and direct answers are few and far between.

Miscommunication seems to be the real culprit since Abbey felt that it had to do with Bruce's father betraying his family, but Bruce apparently didn't get the message since Abby stopped calling him. So, how was he supposed to know anything is she doesn't directly tell him until they get together in Room 104, where real life never seems to apply? There is a tragic and obvious irony to this situation, but, thankfully, violence is never a factor in this story. They claim Babby died in 1991, so that must have been around when these two former buddies grew tired of seeing each other for game play. Despite almost 20 years passing, the pain of that split is still, well, painfully evident on both of them.

No mere dinner could have rekindled the flame these two have been repressing for each other this whole time. Abby even cries when they are able able to resurrect their long, lost avatar. Only by putting their creative energies together as the older, wiser entity, "Abruce," is the spell slightly working again. Yes, for anyone old enough to remember the technological limitations of NES games of that era (myself included), the notion that a character's bones being saved on a game for many years on end is minor nit pick (saving info for that long didn't really start until at least the 21st century games), but dramatically, it kind of works for what the creators are going for here. I guess they could have had a humorous scene where Bruce has to insert a very long, complicated password code into the game to even begin to return to a position where they left off, but that was probably better left off screen. And, sure, a video game that old would never be self-aware enough to give the character a present-day tombstone death date or restore the youth of the characters, but the metaphorical subtext the writers went for is clear and evident.

I think I would have preferred a few metaphors for lost and rediscovered youth that weren't as on-the-nose and cliched as they are here, but, again, it's the emotions that matter here, not the intellectual trickery. If anything, being clever is what gets this narrative in trouble. In the video game, the tombstone graphic reads that Babby died in 2020, but didn't s/he really die in 1991. So, are they saying that it's the dwindling spirit that really needed to die on this night in 2020? Perhaps this death never really occurred and was sent to an agonizing purgatory. It seems that way since it ends with these two former and maybe future friends acknowledging the lingering darkness that kept them apart and rediscovering that the twin flame between them they have been denying may not be extinguished after all.

Nothing ever really dies. Even if you draw a Death card in a tarot deck, it just means the start of something new. We leave this episode pretty sure that the only thing that has died on this night is the feeling of death in the first place.

WARNING: Please don't read if you haven't seen Room 104 4x09 The Last Man yet! SPOILERS AHEAD!

So, it seems Mark Duplass isn't done writing narrative songs for the final season of his HBO late-night anthology series, Room 104. This time, he reminses about the gone-but-certainly-not-forgotten 90s syndicated TV fantasy genre route for 4x09 The Last Man, which feartures Trainspotting, Dog Soldiers, and Grey's Anatomy's Kevin McKidd as a Beastmaster or Kevin Sorbo's Hercules-like warrior named Kyron. We see a shot of the motel door that opens to a desert landscape. Immediately, I was reminded of the season 3 opener with Luke Wilson that played like an origin story for the motel.

This time, it is a new musical episode (where was previously one called "Arnold" that was also directed by Julian Wass) that has three very distinctive acts in one 1/2 hour episode. First, we hear Kyron sing about yearning to be the "first man" in what we assume to be a prehistoric time travel visit to a vast desert wasteland that may or may not be the future space for the motel. We then meet Kyron's supposed nemesis, Durkon (Desean Terry), and his floating (literally!) mentor, Granada (Suzanne Nichols).

Watching these two fight and argue in song about their quest makes you realize pretty quickly that things are probably not as they seem; like we are watching a fantasy fight sequence. That is, characters' fantasy, not just the viewers'.
And, right we are. Pretty soon, (or over 132 thousand years later, as the title card informs us) Kyran is transported into Room 104 as a quintessential 90s family is playing a wholesome game of Monopoly on the bed. The cuts are quick and we even view Kyran changing into modern day casual wear khaki shorts and a stack of Monopoly money even gets caught in his mane via paperclip, but that does not stop his mopey tone as he contemplates radiator-assisted hara-kiri.

But, Durkon is not far behind and the battle rages in this motel room. The cuts are quick since the creators don't have the time to be precious about parallel universe transporting and the song lyrics are pretty cliché, but are sung with enough sense of irony that we don't take any of it seriously since it's ludicrous enough that any of this is happening. I have never seen ABC's long lamented Galavant series and have yet to view Apple TV+'s recent Mythic Quest series, but I assume this is similar to the tone of those shows. As comedy, it works well enough.

And, yes, as Team America: World Police once sang about, we need a training montage and this episode provides it all too well. Is it realistic? Of course not, silly. What, exactly are these two fighting over? Kyran sings he wants to be the first man to bring peace by fighting off his supposedly "evil" enemy (who happens to be of another ethnicity) and bring peace to this fantasy world. Then, we see he is transported to the 90s, it seems, as if he as won and has no purpose now. Despite fighting in pre-historic times, he knows the invention of the internet is coming and will kill off cable TV like video killed the radio star with MTV/VH1 before that time. He takes the Monopoly-playing family's wine after they run off and lays about the motel bed whining about how meaningless everything now is if he is not fighting a fantasy war. He wanted to make his mark as the "first" man, but the title of the episode is "The Last Man," which is from a Nietzsche quote about how once mankind gets what they want, they won't be able to create anymore (or something like that).

Kyran has lived the longest thanks to this supposed time jump and he knows happiness and has all of the modern comforts, but now has nothing to fight for. He now sets up a more modern version of kiri-hana by placing his sword on the radiator (something we suspect many previous Room 104 tenants have done).
But, then Durkon also teleports into the room and Kyron's purpose is regained. They start fighting again in the room like children. Why? Because that is exactly what they are.

We see the training montage again and they finally realize the only way to create anything they want is through common ground. To achieve their goal, they must work together. They put their swords together and the shapes connect together and create the light of creation as they impale themselves. The real fun of this playing is in the journey, not the destination, whether it is going over the wall they sing about or just defeating one another. We Americans currently exist in late-stage capitalism, so we know well what the "last" people of the quote are referring to. We supposedly have everything we need with smart phones, fast internet, endless 24 hour delivery services, etc. What else is there to learn about except...remembering the esctasy of playing.
American life is similar to Monopoly (a satire of capitalism), but not completely. There are no real rules in this life. Almost everything has already been done at least once that we know of.

So, what are we to gain from this episode? That we are just meant to find real pleasure in fighting never-ending conflict, only to abruptly change the rules midway through when we get bored of following them to a "T?"
After the swords come together (not in sexual way, mind you) and the light bursts, we see, to no real surprise, that the two enemies are actually young brothers playing sword games in Room 104 as, Grenada, who is really their mother, watches on at the motel table. No explanation is given for them being of different ethnicities, so I won't assume what might the case be. Is one of the boys adopted? Does one have one skin color as a dominant or recessive gene trait? We don't know for sure.

Is this a criticism of racism in America today? With current events, it might seem so, even though this episode was produced before the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent racial unrest and protests. This type of racial has always existed in humanity, regardless of nationality. Everyone wants to be the one who brings about peace in never-ending war, so what does one do when they achieve this peace? Well, rediscover play and start up new wars, of course.

We are all really children who comes from the same humanity, regardless of skin color, and just need to keep learning how to play nicer. Not bad for a 1/2 hour musical.

WARNING: Please don't read if you haven't seen Room 104 4x08 No Dice yet! SPOILERS AHEAD!

"If you were happy everyday, you wouldn't be a person, you'd be a game show host."
- Veronica (Winona Ryder), Heathers

This star-studded edition of the final season of HBO's late night anthology series, Room 104, concerns co-creator Mark Duplass' rather peculiar obsession with game show hosts. I can only assume this means to expand his recent season-long theme of nostalgia and yearning for bygone eras I have discussed in previous episode reviews. The myth of the relentlessly optimistic game show host has mostly gone the way of the dodo with only a few exceptions, at least in the USA. They were once a regular on the primetime and morning television scene, giving millions upon millions of attentive viewers an inviting and alluring presence in between cutthroat contestants jumping through proverbial hoops of fire on national television in order to win sometimes absurd items and/or cold hard, highly-taxable cash.

Here, we follow the story of elderly Edin (Linda Lavin of Alice fame) pining over the attention of the fictional host, Chip Crawford (Gary Cole), of the just as fictional game show, No Dice (yes, they actually roll an oversized dice). The last time I really remember watching any type of media story around the parasocial interaction between an elderly woman and a male game show host out of her reach, it was 20 years ago with Requiem for a Dream, so I sort of knew what to expect from this episode. Sadly, I didn't feel it offered much beyond some recognizable star power, which this series isn't exactly known for.

In the beginning of the episode, we see Chip with his producer, Steph (Mozart in the Jungle's Jennifer Kim), enter the titular room where Enid, his biggest fan(atic) awaits his appearance. As expected, Chip feels he is above this sort of fan service interaction, so it is spelled out that this is the network's idea, not his, to resurrect his public image. If there is any celebrity who needs to seem infallible in the prying public, it would be a game show host (just look at Chuck Barris' story) so Chip seems determined to do the bare minimum. He even expects Steph to "interrupt" the session in order for him to exit early, under the disguise of needing to catch an airplane. This being Room 104, things don't exactly go as planned.

First off, Chip is introduced as an acerbic, arrogant twat, which Steph is probably already well-aware of. So, when Chip expects her to give him the signal, she won't since getting a photo of him giving Enid the dice just won't suffice. We can tell almost immediately that Chip is a bit a curmudgeon. Since this is only a 1/2 hour episode, we don't know exactly what he had done to put himself into this PR situation, but whatever it was, it must have been pretty damaging. He also seems to be a bit of an alcoholic and really doesn't like being a successful game show host, but (I'm guessing) he needs the money too badly to ever really quit.

Of course, this is not the only time he's had to resort to desperate lengths to help himself. He claims he even directed and financed a vanity film project to try to resurrect his serious acting career. Of course, Enid's seen it and doesn't care how pathetic it makes him look. This triggers a reaction within Chip. He realizes that his audience is capable of more than what he was giving them credit for. Enid isn't as far gone as Ellen Burstyn's character was in Requiem for a Dream. She maybe a little emotionally attached, but is not delusional, materialistic, or even desperate for attention. She just wants a do-over of their first meeting when she was a guest on his show in 1993, which she claims Chip ruined by being distracted by her bosom.

By the time that Chip realizes how much Enid's connection to his show gives her an inner joy money could never buy, he remembers his sense of purpose as an entertainer. Suddenly, he wants to play the game with her. He needs to let her win so she can have her moment when he turns the dice around to make sure she doesn't get stuck with the snake eyes she rolls. Of course, it is implied that the game is rigged so only a few combinations are even possible on the dice, but that doesn't seem to matter to him in this moment.

Up until this point, he has been in denial about how his destiny as a host makes other people feel. It is implied he couldn't have success as a serious actor not because he lacked talent, but because he was given the wrong opportunities and fell for the allure of the consistent paycheck. Enid's affection and need light a fire inside of him that he had long since tried to extinguish with liquor and probably other harmful substances. Enid wants to feel like the woman Chip lifted did during the first show she saw him on. By doing this, Chip seems to attempt to lift the curse he inadvertently placed on her when he caused her to roll the dice again. No longer will thinking of the clock she could have won bring her agony. Now, she can receive closure for the pain he placed upon her. She sees past his hideous veneer and sees the talent that even he forgot lies within.

Naturally, this is a deliberate attempt to make her and himself feel better. Enid even says in the first part of the episode that she likes the No Dice game in the first place because it is about leaving life up to chance. Clearly, Chip knows better and does not want her rolling snakes eyes to make her feel even worse than he's already made her feel. Sometimes a little white lie can be a good thing, but sometimes you end up hurting the people who love you the most by not being honest and upfront with them. Chip just wants out of Room 104 and knows Enid has created a relationship with him and the game based on an illusion that she believes is real. He doesn't take his career seriously anymore, but Enid's belief is stronger than his vanity in this moment.

By assuming she did not see the second dice roll a one and changing the side it rolled on, Chip is merely placating Enid's desire to experience something true and meant to be. He knows allowing her to feel true happiness is really making him feel better about the coffin he made for himself when he accepted the hosting position. While the episode ends without us ever knowing if Enid figures out how Chip manipulated the results of the dice, we the audience and Chip both know every true moment of bliss of this supposed happy ending here is based on a rather condescending lie. That may be the most tragic ending of all.

WARNING: Please don't read if you haven't seen Room 104 4x07 Foam Party yet! SPOILERS AHEAD!

Watching this seventh episode of the final season of HBO's late-night anthology series, Room 104, left me feeling....rather empty, like when all of the bubbles in a bubble bath melt into a flat, misty stupor. The Duplass' prove once again that they seem to have become obsessed with flaunting an overt 1990s nostalgia theme throughout this entire sendoff season. We've already seen a 90s sitcom homage, an early 90s grunge singer character, a woman still attached to her 90s childhood, and a stereotypical professional wrestler famous from that era. I'd rather not speculate why the Duplass' have been aggressive about feting the tropes and cliches of this time, but that is clearly how they are finishing their anthology series, whether we like it or not.

First off, I need to mention that I never had the honor of attending an actual foam party in the 1990s, nor did I even know they were an actual "thing," so I lack the halcyon bias possibly required to have appreciated this episode more. According to an interview with Mark Duplass, he seems to feel that foam parties were something that everyone over the age of 30 were a part of at one point. This is, sadly, not the truth.

Second, I really dislike 1990s teen horror films, like I Know What You Did Last Summer, Halloween H2O, Idle Hands, The Rage: Carrie 2, My Boyfriend's Back, even the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which is what this episode is desperate to evoke. Like, a lot. I get that the more commercial ones of the Weinstein-led Dimension era post-Scream success were made for a particular young audience. I never felt like I was a part of that crass, campy scene. Thus, leading to the vacuous and, sadly, desperate-to-impress main character, Jack (Benjamin Papac) in this episode, who always feels alienated in his little world. That is, until he latches on to a group of his victims...er...I meant "friends" he hasn't known for very long in the form of Luke (Harvey Guillén), Jenna (Olivia Crocicchia), Hunter (Timothy Granaderos), and Morgan (Alison Jaye).

Much like "The Raft" section of Creepshow 2, all of these young adults are isolated where a mysterious and demonic force picks them off one-by-one once they make the mistake of touching a seemingly harmless substance floating by them.
In this case, the seemingly touchable object is some innocent-looking party foam Jack picked out. He doesn't seem to know how to control the foam, or even how to shut off the machine he hides under one of the motel beds to surprise his compadres into a carefree night that is going to be more than an excuse to drink themselves stupid and (possibly) unsafe sex. Of course, there seems to be a lesson in all of this that is over ham-fistingly delivered through a specially designed 90s-style pop-metal song called, "Conformity."

I kept looking for deeper meaning in the rather short 19 min directorial debut from actor Natalie Morales (Santa Clarita Diet, Dead to Me, Parks and Recreation, many others), but I am just not seeing the connection between marching to the beat of your own drum and alienating yourself from the only friends you've ever felt close to by by absorbing them into a rather narcissistic plot device. Yes, you see, dear viewers, instead of the friends just having their skin melted when they touch the possibly acidic frothy bubbles or have their clothing dissolved into nothing by the seemingly innocent foam, they actually begin to physically turn into Jack - peroxide-tips included.

I guess you could compare this to the Donkey scene in Pinocchio, where all of the misbehaving boys are magically transformed into lookalike animals and shipped to an island to punish them for being non-conformists, but I am not sure that is what the script by Bryan Poyser is going for.
Instead, the foam seems to be an extension of Jack's needy and unlikable personality. Is the foam symbolic of his lack of identity and originality? Since the episode is so stark and succinct, we don't get much character development or explanation as to how the foam works or what its intent really is. We see a fun shot of severed arms being thrown about over the waves of the foam at one point, but we are never sure if the foam is eating the characters, absorbing them, dissolving them, or just teleporting them to a much more fun party not in a cheap motel room.

It is sort-of revealed that the foam is only here b/c of Jack, who might have summoned it from the bottom of his superficial soul. He is presented as the sort of peroxide-tip-haired, 90s-rocker-boy cliche who is trying to hard to have friends since he has no real depth or interesting personality. He has to over-compensate for his lack of being compelling by acting like something as superficial and silly as foam is the glue that binds all of his friends together harmoniously. As if they would all abandon him if he didn't rely on trends to make himself look more interesting than he actually is. The foam really is a part of Jack when it re-congeals and forces Jack to absorb it back into himself. It's like Jack is the villain and victim in his own sadistic party all at once, like a psychic vampire in disguise ready to absorb the likable impersonates of everyone around him. By the time he awakes, he seems to have no memory of what he caused, except when he sees Morgan's university ID and doesn't seem the realize the potential love that he, himself, probably snuffed out.

So, does this rather short campy horror homage have a deeper point, or is it all surface-level pontificating? If you listen to the lyrics to the "Conformity" song, you realize that it references and criticizes exactly what we are being shown in the episode, from Bacardi, to foam parties in general. I guess it is meant to be it form of dramatic irony, that we should not enjoy the superficial pleasures we are being sold as fulfilling fun and excitement, since all that we are left with in the morning is regret and a big mess we can't clean up on our own.

In films of that era, they were always hawking new hit music of corporate-approved "alternative" bands that preached rebellion and finding your own voice in a world of cootie-cutter sameness, yet never actually embodied any of it, most of whom didn't have careers past their one-hit wonder status. I suppose this is what happened in the 90s and continues to this day with young adults. They got sold the idea of non-conformity and rebellion as this great rite of passage to embrace when you're young and finding your own way in life. Then, it became a com-modified shadow of its former self when it became mainstream and commercial; something to sell to the youth as stickers and tattoos rather than it be something of substance they felt and experienced on their own. The punk scene of the 70s and 80s gave birth to the goth and grunge scene, which became the ska and EDM scenes, then became the bubblegum pop and nu-metal scene, before metastasizing into the emo and dubstep scenes with Kpop to follow, etc. Kids still worship alternative and hip hop bands before their time without realizing what made them so revolutionary in the first place. It's all a part of the shiny, glossy commercial cultural surface now. One touch and you'll get sucked into oblivion.

Maybe it was better to have become a donkey.
