Emmy winners Annie Murphy (Schitt’s Creek) and Christine Baranski (The Gilded Age) have been tapped to star in the upcoming second season of Hulu‘s Nine Perfect Strangers. Also set as series regulars in the new installment are Lucas Englander (Transatlantic) and musician King Princess in her acting debut.
They join previously unveiled cast members Murray Bartlett (The White Lotus, The Last Of Us), Dolly de Leon (Triangle of Sadness), Maisie Richardson-Sellers (Undeclared War) and Aras Aydin.

The octet would play members of the new group of titular strangers opposite series’ executive producer Nicole Kidman, whose acting involvement is still being negotiated, I hear.

In flawed Pennsylvania detective Mare Sheehan, Kate Winslet has created yet another iconic character to add to her acting repertoire. By fully investing herself into this role, Winslet gave a masterclass in acting through her portrayal of this complex, and complicated character.

From the first episode of Mare of Easttown, Winslet’s fans knew they were watching something special. They were witnessing an incredible performance from an actress who immersed herself body and soul into her character. In not only tackling a difficult regional accent, but also choosing to forego makeup and stylish costume, the actress’ dedication to Mare was marked by her authenticity.

Detective Mare Sheehan was not a likable character at first. This flawed, damaged woman was abrupt and brusque but soon began revealing the layers of baggage showing why she became the woman she was. This was a police detective with a difficult life, from living up to her town reputation as a sports hero, to a grieving mother, trying to face life following the suicide of her oldest son.

In Kate Winslet’s talented hands, Mare came to life, warts, and all. Through her stellar work, Winslet portrayed Mare with a complexity and humanity that soon had viewers rooting for her to succeed. Winslet gave Mare a deep, earthy core making her as real and raw as she could be. Hers was the type of performance that acting classes will point to as a prime example of an actor totally committed to a part. For all of these reasons, and many more, Kate Winslet is SpoilerTV’s 2021 Staff Choice Performer of the Year.

Marko: Once again Andre Braugher captures the screen with his stellar performance. As he gave life to the script he also was giving deeper context to his character and bringing me to tears as he unravels all the pain he was going through since the start of the pandemic.
Folie-lex: For all his great qualities Jake is often a selfish manchild. And taking Rosa quitting as a personal slight instead of bothering to look into the deeper implications of what it was about especially amidst the BLM movement, was unfortunately very on brand. Thankfully Rosa doesn't let him off the hook and schools him appropriately with a well deserved dress down.
Laura: The Monks, David and Ben find Kristen and Fenna a little drunk on the barley wheel. Ok, this is undoubtedly one of the best episodes of the show yet. It's building its mythology without yet explaining it, it was disturbing and hilarious without a lot of words, and it played on undefined romances with Kristen both towards David and Fenna. I would say Kristen's relationship with Fenna was one the most unexpected pleasures of the episode and these kinds of scenes where Ben and David (and sexist monks) are kind of catching her in schoolgirl antics just brought so much more bemusement to an episode that was mostly silent. Please tell us we will see Fenna and Kristen reunite at some point!!

Folie-lex: In the second outing of the reboot/sequel show, the always lovely François Chau plays a guest that Roselyn Sanchez's Elena has trouble connecting with. In this scene we also learn more about Elena's backstory, sure, but it's Mr. Lee who is still very much in love and mourning his fiance that keeps us interested. Roselyn Sanchez seems to know this as she gives François Chau the appropriate room to deliver a great perfomance as she encapsulates all the audience should be feeling in the moment.

GOOD TROUBLE, "Anticipation", August 25, 2021, Actors: Emma Hunton, Erik Stocklin
The Scene: Davia opens up to Matt
Luana: I'm loving Matt and I loved how he was able to be there for her without making it a hero moment. Hunton is just amazing to watch and this moment was heartbreaking but also inspiring.

GROWN-ISH, "A BOY IS A GUN", August 5, 2021, Actors: Diggy Simmons, Daniella Perkins
The Scene: Doug opens up to Kiela
Luana: I can't say I care much about this pair but their conversation was perfectly heartbreaking.
Chlöe: The whole episode was leading to a charged explosive moment, especially with Ace spiralling as a result of the fight at the end of previous episode. The bar fight felt like a much needed catharsis, bringing the brothers together for a brief moment of unity. There is a great emphasis on family in the show and Jack and Ace having each others' backs for a moment and fighting together is a little bit of relief from all that pain and tension between them. I look forward to the show continuing to peel back the layers with the brothers. Alexander Ludwig and Stephen Amell have great chemistry and I can't wait to see their relationship develop!
Jessica C: This was a really thrilling and nuanced cliffhanger to close out the first season! When the sitcom lens was ripped away in this scene, we witnessed the dark side of Neil’s antics. The side of him that the comedy lens hides in all of the same ways that it hides Allison’s turmoil. If Patty hadn’t interfered, Neil could have easily killed Allison. Which makes me question all of Kevin’s and Pete’s actions and how sinister they would be in the drama lens. Neil is arguably the tamest of the three, I’m terrified to think what Kevin would be capable of. And also, Patty smashing a bottle over Neil’s head and telling him he won’t be saying a word to Kevin was incredibly satisfying.
Justyna: I've stumbled upon this show by chance. Haven't heard much about it and didn't plan to watch. And yet I ended up watching most of it in a couple of days. Each story was different, not all of them worked as well as the others, but I wanted to give a shout-out to one of my favorites - the story of love and grief from the second season's premiere. Stephanie Curran loses her beloved husband Michael, the father of her grown-up daughter and years later remarries another man named Niall, but still continues to hold onto the memory of her lost love through the car he left behind. She struggles with the idea of selling the car (per her new husband's request) throughout the episode and we watch a beautiful and heartbreaking montage of a love story between Stephanie and Michael, a lifetime they spent together around and in the car. Only after she sells it, she admits to Niall how much she misses her late husband and just how important this vintage car truly was to her. She used it to keep a connection to her past alive, choosing to remember what she had and lost, to keep a part of Michael alive. It was such an honest and powerful admission, a true portrayal of grief I rarely see on the screen. No stages of grief or moving on talk. What made the scene even more memorable is Niall's response. He understands her grief, shares his own way of keeping lost loved one close and even admits that the fact she has such a huge heart, with room for two great loves is one of the reasons he loves her. "It's love and grief, baby." Beautifully written and acted scene. And of course he goes to buy back the car for her in the very next one. Kudos to cast & crew for all their work on bringing this story to life in the show.
DJRiter: In a powerful moment the Bellweather Unit and Anacostia got to share final moments with the dying General Alder before committing her body to the Mycelium. Each member of the unit, despite their differences, got to express their respect and feelings for the General and Anacostia got an emotional final goodbye to the woman who was like a mother to her.
Laura: I'm enjoying Nine Perfect Strangers so far, and it's no surprise, really, that Michael Shannon is one of the biggest standouts. This episode let his character shine when we are led to believe that Tony would have been the one to snag the goat, given how angry Tony has come off and how apparently fractured Napoleon has been exposed to be. It's a shocking reveal, but even Nicole Kidman deserves some kudos here for trying to balance a character that is at first saddened, but then decidedly glad believing the "regimen" is working!
Prpleight: Sanders helps Michael with a little fatherly guidance and advice. Michael was fairly frustrated throughout much of the episode. Maria is in a coma, which he can do nothing about. He throws his energy into finding Kyle, but hits a roadblock. Alex is of no help. Michael is stuck. and his sense of failure over protecting Kyle and Maria isn't helping him think more clearly. Enter Sanders. Everyone seems to consider Michael's snippiness as 'that's just Michael' and usually responds to him as though he'd made a calm and polite statement. Sanders just snaps back. Watching this scene it occurred to me that they're like a pair of grumpy old men; like family. Knowing Sanders' history and his long held desire to take care of Michael, it just fit. It also made this scene special. Michael's investigation was stalled. Sanders talked him down then provided the different point of view that gave Michael the answers he needed. We're used to seeing Michael push away people who try to help him. It was really nice to see him accept help for a change, even if he was a little crotchety while doing it.
Alison D: On its own, it was a simple and beautiful moment for viewers - Alex talks Michael down from his spiral with fiery logic and an unmistakable, albeit coded, present tense declaration of love. Simple as the scene was, it was also filled with nuance, callbacks, and progress, delivering something genuinely great for all the Malex fans. And kudos to costume and lighting.
Luana: Michael was going on about how he's worthless because of his father and Alex reminds him where he stood on him being judged by the actions of his own father and stops him in his tracks. A wonderful moment of perspective and growth for these two.
DJRiter: In its first episode back and the first of its final 13 episodes Supergirl returned and leaned heavily on the aspect of the show that made it great to begin with, The Danvers Sisters and their emotional couch scenes. Their final couch scene, where the sisters opened up to one another (like never before showing how both characters have grown) about how Kara being in the Phantom Zone affected each other. It was a beautifully performed scene by stars Chyler Leigh and Melissa Benoist and solidified that the Danvers Sisters are the heart, soul and foundation of the show and should remain the focus of this final season.
Justyna: The season one of "Superman & Lois" has officially concluded so I can honestly say it's my favorite first season of any show in a while. The writing, the characters, the actors, the music, the visuals - all worked beautifully together to make this excellent story work. There are so many great scenes that I could have highlighted from last month, but in the end I decided to go with one of the most tense moments on the show so far. While I wouldn't allow myself to believe our Lois could die just like the other Lois from Irons' universe it didn't make it any easier to watch Leslie Larr targeting her on live TV. The reactions from Jonathan and Jordan alone, as they freeze for a second and realize the danger their mom is in, add to the intensity and importance of the scene. Of course Lois Lane would be there, reporting the news, even though she's putting herself at risk. And there's nothing she could do in the moment to defend herself. Luckily, John Henry Irons uses his hammer to stop Larr from a distance and saves Lois in the process. It would make sense to have Superman come to the rescue, but I loved that it was Steel who got to do that. He couldn't save his wife but at least his presence in this universe made a difference for our Lois. All the difference in the world. Wonderfully done, short but impactful moment. Kudos to cast & crew of the show for all their work on this fantastic series.
Folie-lex: Roy Kent may be in love with Keeley Jones but Lady Football (as Ted would say in a pinch) is his real soulmate. Therefore it's only appropriate that the ultimate climax of this rom-com homage episode ends with Roy, running back to his love, finding a little bit of himself again in the process. It's (as usual with this show) both beautiful and funny, and I dare anyone to listen to the "He's every-fucking-where" chant without tears in their eyes and a full blown smile in their face.
Laura: Marissa and Hal use a table and their bodies to barricade a door in the back room to protect themselves, as the alt right gang descends violently in Wackner's court! I have come a long way this season with a lot of mixed feelings, as the season is almost like a hard reset of the show, given how there was almost no known secondary characters from earlier seasons (or from The Good Wife) making appearances, but instead lots of new characters mostly centered around this Kangaroo Court(s). At times, it felt like a different animal. However, one of the brilliant great pleasures of the season was finally giving Marissa a deeper character arc and Steele's dynamics with Patinkin's new Judge Wackner was one not to be missed. I particularly enjoyed the exchange between them in this episode, while a microcosm of January 6th is happening all around them. For Marissa, whose character first appeared on The Good Wife, Wackner came off as a father figure in a way, as we already know that Eli was a bad father, or at least as this scene further plays off, he was in the emotional sense. But Marissa spouting off Eli's beliefs to Wackner kind of proves that, despite whatever emotional deficiency Eli may have had towards his family, he was not necessarily wrong in understanding the world he lives in and in teaching it to Marissa. And so, it was quite amusing seeing Marissa [once again] spouting the cynical wisdom of Eli and teaching Wackner a lesson in an almost dire situation, despite Marissa encouraging Hal to rule the right way. I don't know if Mandy Patinkin will return, but if not, I can't say that there wasn't perfect closure here with Marissa growing up and seeing the dynamic get role reversed.
Luana: I loved seeing Mandy Patinkin in this role and I loved how his court was steered to its only possible conclusion, if a bit extreme. It was the perfect way to show the possibilities, and the cherry on top was him putting his apron back on and just picking up the broom.

T'Challa Became a Star-Lord?", August 18, 2021, Voiced by: Chadwick Boseman, Josh Brolin and more, The Scene: The introduction of T'Challa's Ravagers family
Justyna: Easily my favorite of the episodes so far. I realize that there's been a lot of praise for the darker "What if" scenarios presented in the show (which is perfectly fine of course) but personally I loved watching this more hopeful universe (at least till that last scene) and the difference T'Challa made in the world. From the promotional materials shared prior to the series premiere I knew we will be introduced to this Ravager version of T'Challa, but I never imagined just how much of an impact his presence and influence would cause in the galaxy. The revelation that Ravagers have been reformed and are now inspired by Robin Hood stories was a brilliant twist on its own, but Thanos being one of them was something I never expected to see, not even in this "What if" multiverse. This scene in particular, where the ripple effects of Yondu's choice are truly introduced, left me both surprised and really excited for the rest of the story. Considering Thanos' motives back in the "Avengers: Infinity War" I have actually wondered a while ago whether there was anything that could have changed his mind. By his own description his ultimate goal was to save the universe, even despite all the damage and pain he's caused. So if someone found a better way to do that than eliminating half of all life in the universe, would he have listened? Turns out the answer is yes. For better or worse, we find out that in at least one of the universes T'Challa's heroism, intellect and kindness, his influence alone managed to change Mad Titan's mind. He still makes references to his plan throughout the episode, but he left his army behind and chose to do better, even developed a better relationship with his daughter, Nebula. Such an impactful change for the story of MCU overall. The Ravagers family of T'Challa being introduced was a brilliant twist, a funny and exciting moment that immediately captured my attention and made me enjoy this story so much more than I expected. The tragic thing about the episode though, it made me miss T'Challa's character (and his wonderful portrayer) even more. Thank you Chadwick, for everything. And kudos to cast & crew of this great series for all their work.

With only one episode to go, Nine Perfect Strangers has accelerated in the second half of its season, dropping twists seemingly at every turn. Twists that don't always seem necessary, or even, if I may... sensical. Despite the first few episodes feeling a little repetitive, I was hoping the season would get better once all the players had been introduced, along with their shadowy backgrounds, but the truth is, Nine Perfect Strangers seems to both pile on too much and too few elements to make the show work.

It does have its moments though, largely thanks to its stellar cast (I've been seeing Morning Show reviews this week and this seems to have become one of Hollywood's recurrent problems: combinations of acting juggernauts in so-so shows), but sometimes that still isn't enough. Part of the problem, to me, is still that the show decided to stray from the book so much, and as a reader I was willing to accept the changes if they made the plot better but for the most part they..., well, don't.
Disclaimer: this review isn't spoiler free, so if you haven't watched the last two episodes, proceed with caution!

9 things that make 0 sense on Nine Perfect Strangers

1. Carmel. What the hell is going on?! Far from the weight-obsessed, slightly downtrodden yet humorous mother of 4 the book depicted, Carmel has become a timebomb who seems like she could go off at any given second. Even in the show, the constantly simmering rage that emanates from her under the cover of an overly sweet exterior (her voice?!) is, at times, terrifying. And with good reason, since we learn that Masha is actually one of the women Carmel's ex cheated on her with.

2. Again, WHAT? How did Masha miss this? Surely she vets each and every one of her "guests" more thoroughly than future FBI recruits?! Or was this planned and did she think it would be cathartic for both of them to finally meet? In any case, this is beyong any "wellness" plan either of them could've had, since Carmel is clearly here for vengeance, and Masha's idea of solving people's problems involve an increasing amount of (not so microdosed) drugs and hallucinations. Is it any surprise then, that Carmel is the one who shot Masha all those years ago, and actually came to Tranquillum House to finish the job?

3. Speaking of hallucinations, there might as well be ten perfect strangers here, since Zach is now a new fixture for the entire Marconi family. How is this going to help them? It's one thing to be in a pretend situation where you think you cay say everything you couldn't to a person you can never reach again, it's another to make it last. I (again) have trouble believing in quick fix therapy solutions where issues as deep as these aren't worked through. I worry about what Masha's next steps are going to be, provide the Marconi family with a weekly delivery of drugs that allow them to still "live" with Zach?! Reality isn't a perspective, Masha, and using people's grief as a commercial device is despicable. Also, in what world would Masha saying she'll take the drug cocktail with them, be reassuring? The Marconis' decision to go along with all this is baffling.

4. Even worse though, this newfound peace is only tentative, since the revelation that the asthma prescription contained a suicide ideation warning as a side effect is suddenly dumped as one of Heather's repressed memories. Heather works in the medical field, and I'm having a really hard time believing she wouldn't have made that connexion either by reading through her son's medication guidelines when he got it, or afterwards seeing as his act seemed like it came out of nowhere. Based on Heather's behavior, it seemed that she, along with Napeleon (who didn't get up early enough) and Zoe (who was playing the silent treatment game), already blamed herself for Zach's death, so this tardive addition feels completely tacked on.

5. It takes seven, SEVEN episodes for someone to finally crack and leave. Delilah has had it, and one can only hope an end to the madness will finally come through in the form of Masha being put behind bars (along with Carmel), for a very long time.

6. The drug cocktail she gave the Marconi family to commune with Zach has already caused one death, and yet Masha doesn't blink an eye as she sees them take it. As part of Lars's investigation, and because Delilah and Yao were actually there when it happened, we learn that during the last retreat, a certain Mr Connelly had a heart attack and never made it. How did Tranquillum House not close after that?! Masha blamed it on an unhealthy lifestyle but surely there are investigations when someone dies at a wellness retreat? Or did she drug the detectives too?

7. It's also revealed that at least part of Masha's obsession with death isn't solely her own brush it it when she got shot. She also lost a child, and understandably seems to never have recovered from it. Which sheds a lot of light on her motives, but still doesn't make them acceptable. Drugs don't make deceased loved ones come back, Masha, and never will.

8. Meanwhile, Ben and Jess seem to be on a completely different show, and are actually renewing their vows. Yay for love in the face of... winning the lottery and being miserable, I guess?

9.Similarly, Frances and Tony finally get together, and it's lovely and feels genuine but, again, how are they not seeing what's going on and running away from it, Delilah-style? The darkness of Tony's past also make me wonder if he'll ever really be able to move on from it, and what that bodes for his blossoming relationship with Frances.

With the finale almost upon us, one can only wonder how the show will wrap up and if it can salvage the parts that made it good, i.e. the characters. As usual, sound off in the comments as we wait!

The Reader side, on the other hand, was a bit more interesting since the Top 5 all blasted out together separating themselves from the rest of the group of nominees very early on by substantial amounts. In the end, one nominee did break away from that group and surge to the lead where that spot was held until voting concluded. There was a lot of overlap this month between the Staff side and the Reader side. When that happens these performers are usually at the very top of their game and delivered very strong POTM worthy performances, this month was no exception. Who do you think won on both sides? As weeks go by and this show progresses, so, apparently, do the drug dosages included in Tranquillum House's infamous smoothies. While nothing too wild had happened so far bar some startling realizations and one quite funny potato sack race, this episode had some intriguing new developments as each guest reckoned with his or her past.

9 Unexpected Things That Happened During This Episode

1. A few of the guests experienced particularly vivid dreams, but for a minute there, I really wondered if Frances was truly seeing Paul. But then he started talking about how bad her books were, acting like she was the one at fault, and Masha appeared with a sword and while Masha is crazy, I realized there was no way this was happening in real life.

2. Frances faceplanted in her porridge (I was a bit worried she was going to become one of those random deaths by drowning in it, actually), so she was having quite the day, poor thing.

3. Delilah told Tony to fuck off. Delilah has been having not-great days at Tranquillum House for a while now, and I never got the impression she was as devoted to Masha's, uh, vision as Yao. Naively, I figured since Yao seemed in love with Masha the explanation of his devotion and reluctance to go against her plan likely lay there.

4. HOWEVER, since Delilah and Masha also seem to be having an affair (on what grounds is Delilah mad at Yao for straying, then?!), maybe it's not so simple. That said, I don't think Delilah is going to play her part until the end, if this unraveling is anything to go by.

5. Tony and Lars have a kid together. In a dream, but still. It was a little distressing to see how roughly Tony reacted to Lars revealing this, until we learn that not only has he (accidentally) killed someone in his past, but his relationship with his children is also fraught with despair as he wasn't even there for their births. (Again, I do wonder why the show feels the need to pile on to some characters' backstories like this, it's... unnecessary.) His relationship with Frances continues to be lovely though, as they help each other through their respective issues.

6. On the bright(er) side, Napoleon can sing! Having now witnessed this greatness, I'm going to need Nine Perfect Strangers to have at least one musical moment from him per episode, please and thank you. Him dreaming he was a Beatle was equally wonderful, and I'd sign a petition to have him retroactively integrated into the band if any such thing existed. Napoleon and Heather are also coming to terms with what didn't quite work in their marriage, aside from the grief, and cliff-jumping seems to be an excellent therapeutic mean to achieve that.

7. We (well, Zoe) finally saw Zach. At first I assumed this was the same kind of... vivid dream everyone else was having, but the fact that she saw him again at the party makes me wonder. Well, that and Masha calling her "the key". To what end?!

8. Ben and Jessica had sex! This shouldn't be surprising since they're young, rich, and recently married... and yet, considering they came to Tranquillum House for marital troubles, this feels like a victory and them finally reconnecting a little. Who would've thought winning the lottery would cause such misery, between them and Hurley from Lost it does feel a bit cursed. (I'd be willing to find out though)

9. Carmel flipped out. Again. Okay, this one is the opposite of unexpected, especially since it never feels genuine to me. I realize that at this point I should just let go of how the characters were in the book and try and enjoy what the show actually is, but they've done such a great job with other characters I don't understand why the show went so woefully astray with others.

Still, a mostly entertaining episode that shines whenever the characters are allowed to have funny or emotional moments between them, removed from the mystery and Masha's plotting. What did you guys think? Any theories on who's threatening Masha? Will Lars finally want to have kids and reunite with Ray? As usual, sound off in the comments!

It's Day 4 of the guests' stay at Tranquillum House on Nine Perfect Strangers, and the issue is just that: one episode covers one day, and sometimes not... much... happens. At all. I feel like I'm almost watching the one episode over and over again with slight alterations here and there, a bit of character development, a new, slightly unhinged activity for them to engage in. All four episodes that actually now constitute half a season all seem to blur together in one endless, smoothie-infused, coma. And it's not, not enjoyable, not with that kind of cast, but it doesn't exactly make for riveting TV, either. Speaking of smoothies, if I see one more blender shot of strawberries mixed with whatever else (and a microdose of drugs, of course!), I am going to RIOT.

Beucase, you see, that's the great revelation. Masha and her minions are using a few choice drugs to "help" their guests have a truly transformative experience, and allow them to open up more fully, with realizations that may have taken months to happen otherwise. At least, that's what Masha thinks, and what Masha thinks, goes. The armchair psychiatrist in me wants to say that some deep-rooted issues can't be solved that way and will come back eventually, but hey, Heather and Napoleon finally reconnected, Carmel and Frances faced their demons, and Tony opened up about his, so clearly there's something (albeit fictional) to the technique.

The charm in Nine Perfect Strangers mostly lies in its relationships, whether old or new, but especially new. Zoe and Lars are certainly an unexpected pairing but somehow they bounce off each other particularly well, and I hope we get to dig a little deeper into both their reasons to be there. Zoe constantly distancing herself from her brother and what happened to him is obviously a ploy, and Lars calls her out on it immediately. What kind of 18 year old twins "aren't close" anyway? As for Lars's alleged investigative (and likely explosive) article about health resorts, much like with the other changes from the book, I can't say I'm a fan of this new twist. Believe me, I don't mind changes from the original narrative when they work and make sense. So far, none of the show's choices have felt necessary, piling on the misery doesn't necessarily make for good TV. Did Carmel's ex-husband need to not only have traded her in for a newer model, but also have repeatedly cheated on her and actually been physically violent with her? Did Tony's past have to include a dead man, ruined career, and estranged family? The book's character backgrounds may have been less sensational but they worked better and in more subtle ways.

I'm worried about what else the show is going to twist around in an effort to make the characters seem more compelling, when really it's just using crutches it shouldn't need. On the bright side, Melissa McCarthy still is a highlight in every episode, and her storming off to get her contrabande alcohol after learning she was being microdosed, and subsequently regretting the ensuing hangover the next day, was hilarious. Her burgeoning friendship with Tony is also quite charming to see develop from one episode to the next, and one hopes they can finally find solace in each other. I honestly didn't know people could (still) get scammed the way Frances did with the infamous fake internet boyfriend and his fake, injured son. More realistic is the declining interest in her books, and how one devastating review can throw authors through a loop.

We also learn that 1. Ben and Jess are not being drugged (yet, apparently Masha has special plans for struggling couples), and 2. Ben's sister is a drug addict (which may explain why Masha would be more careful). In fact, the guests aren't the only ones on a very specific smoothie regimen, both Yao and Delilah have to follow those rules too. Which doesn't feel particularly safe, if everyone's brains are addled who is controlling the situation?! Also, how does that work, is there a clause in their contracts that specifies that they could get fired if they don't comply? As usual, Masha's supervision of the whole thing is both completely insane but also what keeps it together. What she may not have factored in though, is that by sleeping with Yao, who is also in a relationship with Delilah, she may not have the hold she thinks she has on Delilah. Delilah, understandably, is not a fan of her boyfriend having sex with her boss (or anyone else than herself, I would assume). If Delilah finally snaps, there's no telling where this little experiment will end.

With four episodes left, I hope the show will tighten its narrative and make it feel less like filler, because there is a lot of potential under the slightly unfocused blur of smoothies, dark backstories, and unclear final motives. The one thing that truly and completely needs to go (but won't) is the Masha stalker subplot. No one cares, it's probably a red herring anyway, and it's not adding anything to the story. So, what did you guys think of this episode? Are you enjoying the slightly meandering pace? What do you think is Masha's goal here? As usual, sound off in the comments! Nine Perfect Strangers brings together, well... nine <strike>strangers</strike> guests, one guru-like wellness resort leader, and a few wellness professionnals who are all here to make the guests live through an exceptional experience as they detox from their busy lives, or heal from their pasts, at Tranquillum House: an idyllic resort based in California.

Nine Things You Need to Know About Nine Perfect Strangers

1. Originally, Nine Perfect Strangers is based on Liane Moriarty's novel of the same name. The book is entertaining (as are almost all Liane Moriarty's ventures), even if it drags a little at some points and ends up being a bit predictable, with characters you can root for and fun situations to behold. The show, however, (at least in these three episodes) takes a few liberties with some characters (namely Tony, Ben, and Carmel, whose show turn is truly baffling) which I didn't particularly enjoy, since the originals felt more believable.

2. The casn't couldn't be much more star-studded if it tried, what with Nicole Kidman, Melissa McCarthy, and Michael Shannon in lead roles, along with The Good Place fan favorite Manny Jacinto in a lovely turn as Yao. I was excited to see Bobby Canavale in this too, but the way the show has changed Tony makes me... not a fan, sadly. Nicole's accent is a little all over the place, which is expected as this point since it was in Big Little Lies too, and I honestly don't mind since I'm not a native English-speaker anyway. Melissa McCarthy is probably the biggest highlight here, she's truly delightful in this role and I hope she gets more of these along the way.

3. It's kind of complicated to judge the show's choices based on only three episodes, having read the book, but there's a heavier secondary plot revolving around Masha's past that seems a lot darker on the show. The comparisons to The White Lotus and its murder mystery are again warranted, except this one is a lot less intriguing since we have no idea what it's about. And if the show, in the end, reverts to the book plot, it'll feel a little pointless.

4. The setting is pretty magical and I, for one, wouldn't mind joining a ten-day health trip with natural pools and lovely hikes. There's something refreshing about leaving technology behind, drinking smoothies and focusing on transforming yourself. It did crack me up that several of the guests tried to smuggle illegal goods (chocolate, wine, the likes) and got "caught" (as in, the goods were confiscated).

5. Speaking of the smoothies, they are everywhere. The show actually opens with a blender shot, and then there's at least one per episode. I've read the book, so no spoilers but this feels especially heavy handed from the writers, and not completely necessary. There's also a rumor that the guests have actually been hand-picked by Masha, which makes one wonder: what was the selection process? What is she trying to create here, exactly?

6. The styling is great. Frances (Melissa McCarthy's character) in particularly looks lovely, and has some very enviable, fully covering swimsuits that I covet and would like references for, please and thank you.

7. It's not every summer that two shows about exotic and luxurious resorts air quasi simultaneously, but apparently, much like vampires and dystopias in their times, resorts are very in right now. With The White Lotus having just aired its season finale and been renewed for a second season based on the critical acclaim and success it garnered, one can wonder how Nine Perfect Strangers compares. /spotty Russian accent/ Vell, my laposhkis, unfortunately Nine Perfect Strangers The White Lotus is not. Maybe it would've suffered less from the comparison had it aired before, or a different year, but The White Lotus is fresh in my (and everyone's) mind so it's hard not to bring it up. NPS doesn't seem as witty or carefully insane as TWL, which is strange since NPS's premise seemed perfectly suited for this kind of satire.

8. Nicole Kidman has been known to wear a variety of wigs for her roles, some more convincing (Big Little Lies) than others (that Destroyer movie). On a scale of Galadriel to Kate Mara's Fantastic Four wig, this one does have the benefit of seemingly surviving everything Masha puts it through, were it diving into pools or empowered speeches, but super realistic looking it is not.

9. There is a goat story. It probably would've felt fresher if it hadn't already almost happened on (international) editions of survivor, as well as on The Wilds, and I don't tend to like knowing fictional animals got hurt for the sake of the story.

All in all, it's a fun premise, a great cast, and while it lacks a bit of substance and gravitas so far, it's entertaining enough that it makes for enjoyable TV, and Melissa McCarthy's performance assuredly makes it worth it. I'm hoping the next episodes dig a little deeper into each family or guest, and that the show really takes advantage of the improbable setting. What did you guys think of these first few episodes? What are you looking forward to as each guest's story unfolds? As usual, sound off in the comments!
