Your contributions were invaluable. The results being revealed today are for the Staff side only, but the Reader results will be revealed at the same time tomorrow. We had such an extraordinary group of performers who won in 2021 that it was a very tight race, especially for the Top 3 spots. The winners and the two runner-ups fought it out right up until the very end. All of the performers in the Top 3 got a high quantity of votes and this group separated themselves from the rest of the pack by a fairly significant amount.</div><div><br /></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgX3acYbnj-daOGElgU-0tvsN5lh33aRN4KvquHfAyhB0B5inPHYawSxDKJAK86o9Qp_MYVb_xtJGCPxbV1eOE0tCvNE0XvJf_tlAg0TQ8B_XwdaYZASIY9OYY2C2iPPbNq0hU7poVgii2zLcvrl-dvbwWypbSn1rFlKKtSwQbXZ3KrvuvBNFs=s1920" style="display: block; padding: 1em 0px; text-align: center;"><img alt="" border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="1920" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgX3acYbnj-daOGElgU-0tvsN5lh33aRN4KvquHfAyhB0B5inPHYawSxDKJAK86o9Qp_MYVb_xtJGCPxbV1eOE0tCvNE0XvJf_tlAg0TQ8B_XwdaYZASIY9OYY2C2iPPbNq0hU7poVgii2zLcvrl-dvbwWypbSn1rFlKKtSwQbXZ3KrvuvBNFs=s600" width="600" /></a></div>
In flawed Pennsylvania detective Mare Sheehan, Kate Winslet has created yet another iconic character to add to her acting repertoire. By fully investing herself into this role, Winslet gave a masterclass in acting through her portrayal of this complex, and complicated character. <br />
<br />
From the first episode of <i>Mare of Easttown</i>, Winslet’s fans knew they were watching something special. They were witnessing an incredible performance from an actress who immersed herself body and soul into her character. In not only tackling a difficult regional accent, but also choosing to forego makeup and stylish costume, the actress’ dedication to Mare was marked by her authenticity. <br />
<br />
Detective Mare Sheehan was not a likable character at first. This flawed, damaged woman was abrupt and brusque but soon began revealing the layers of baggage showing why she became the woman she was. This was a police detective with a difficult life, from living up to her town reputation as a sports hero, to a grieving mother, trying to face life following the suicide of her oldest son. <br />
<br />
In Kate Winslet’s talented hands, Mare came to life, warts, and all. Through her stellar work, Winslet portrayed Mare with a complexity and humanity that soon had viewers rooting for her to succeed. Winslet gave Mare a deep, earthy core making her as real and raw as she could be. Hers was the type of performance that acting classes will point to as a prime example of an actor totally committed to a part. For all of these reasons, and many more, Kate Winslet is SpoilerTV’s 2021 Staff Choice Performer of the Year. <br />

As we approach the final days of 2021, which like last year has been difficult for many people, end of Year TV lists become all the rage, particularly the list of best shows from the past 12 months.<br />
<br />
Here at SpoilerTV, we have just over 70 team members, so rather than asking just one or two people to submit opinions, we compile a collective list from whomever among the team wishes to air their thoughts.<br />
<br />
Our team submitted their top ten shows of the year (10 Points for their best, 9 for 2nd, all the way down to 1 point for their 10th best show), and below is the combined top 20.<br />
<br />
From a total of <b>338</b> shows, <b>166</b> unique shows were chosen somewhere in a top ten list by at least one team member, giving a real diversity to our list. <br />
<br />
2 Shows really blew the others away in terms of voting. Winning the overall vote was Wandavision with a total of 135 points, followed closely by Mare of Easttown. Mare of Easttown actually had the most No.1 show votes out of all the shows with 6 staff members picking it as their no.1 show. Wandavision had the most actual staff members vote for it somewhere in their top 10 with 19 staff members giving it a Top 10 placement.
<br><br>
Ghosts was the highest placed show that didn't receive a single 1st Place spot.
<br><br>
It was also nice to see a couple of Broadcast Shows make the Top 20 list. Ghosts, Prodigal Son and Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist.
<br><br>
Two shows that are still airing their current season also made the Top 20. Hawkeye and Dexter.
<br><br>
Without further ado, here's our top 20. Let us know in the comments what you think of the list? What shows are you surprised made the Top 20, what ones got omitted?<br />

If you can't join live, the videos will be available immediately following the broadcast. </div><div><br /></div><div>This month was a complete and utter unexpected wild ride. So wild that the Staff side ended with 6 nominees in the Top 5 instead of the normal 5 thanks to a tie for that final spot. That top group changed so many times it was hard to predict who was going to prevail in the end. The performer who ultimately won didn't even take the top spot until very nearly the end of voting. The Reader side was no less exciting. Early on it was a really tight race and the person it looked like had the edge didn't even make it into the final Top 5. After a lot of back and forth, the ultimate winner started to creep out to a slow lead before leaving the rest of the pack in their wake. One nominee did give chase and while a valiant effort they did fall short in the end. I'll admit, that while I am very happy with who ultimately won, coming into the voting round I did not expect them to make it into the Top 5 at all, so I was very pleasantly surprised when they pulled off this remarkable and very well deserved win. This was a fun round with two spectacular winners. Who do you think won on both sides? Take some time to post your thoughts in the comments while you wait for the live announcement to start.</div><div><p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">Thank you to everyone who turned out to vote and participate this
month. As usual, thank you to everyone who submitted comments. With each passing month, the submissions for comments keep getting better and better making it harder each round to pick just a single submission to honor each nominee. </p>

<div style="height: 100%; text-align: justify;">
A monthly feature in which we're trying to find the most compelling, best acted, written, directed and just generally great, memorable scenes that we've seen in the past month on TV.
<br /><br />
<b>AMERICAN HORROR STORY: DOUBLE FEATURE, "Gaslight", September 15, 2021, Actors: Sarah Paulson, Macaulay Culkin, The Scene: TB Karen kills Mickey
<br />Lucas:</b> TB Karen kills Mickey, paints her magnum opus, and walks into the ocean. Though this episode was a rollercoaster filled with phenomenal performances, Sarah and Macaulay deliver a very special scene. His devoted, twisted love, her sacrifice, their pain and tragedy, all of that was very intense to watch. Also, despite of her lack of screentime, Karen became so meaningful to me. And that's wonderful. One of the best AHS scenes in years, in my opinion.
<br /><br />
<b><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-il-WBQat4aY/YVobfudmlvI/AAAAAAAAOcY/klLdNsGGW7gT_Vc_2Fod9-2bcjYeKilJwCLcBGAsYHQ/s720/b99.jpg" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="480" data-original-width="720" height="213" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-il-WBQat4aY/YVobfudmlvI/AAAAAAAAOcY/klLdNsGGW7gT_Vc_2Fod9-2bcjYeKilJwCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/b99.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>BROOKLYN NINE-NINE, "Renewal" & "The Last Day", September 2 & 16, 2021, Actors: Andy Samberg, Andre Braugher, Marc Evan Jackson and more, The Scenes: Jake and Holt's last day conversation & Vows renewal ceremony
<br />Justyna: </b>There's a few great moments to highlight from the final episodes of the show. Since the vow renewal ceremony is already included, let me also mention the last exchange between Jake and Holt. The ending itself felt bittersweet in some aspects, but I wanted to give a shout-out to one of my favorite duos from the series and one last callback to the show's beginning. Holt acknowledges how much they've both changed since their first meeting and the fact that Jake finally figured out how to grow up. He's proud of the person that Jake's become and his words clearly mean the world to Peralta who's been looking up to Holt for years and considers him a father figure. They're both emotional, but display strength in their vulnerability and the actors play that balance beautifully. Holt even gets the final joke and that warm and genuinely happy smile at the end is perfect. I will definitely miss this show. Very glad that I've followed this journey from the beginning till the end. Kudos to cast & crew for all their work on the series.
<br /><b>Alejandra:</b> Vows renewal ceremony - Kevin and Holt are the purest dads ever.
<br /><b>Folie-lex:</b> Kevin and Raymond get the perfect redo for their wedding... Doesn't matter that they're in a rush to deadline or that they're each wearing silly costumes. They surround themselves by family (i.e. the squad) and the words they share are heartfelt and beautiful.
<br /><br />
<b>CHICAGO FIRE, "Head Count", September 29, 2021, Actors: Jesse Spencer, Kara Killmer
<br />The Scene: Casey tells Brett she's amazing
<br />Beth: </b>After so much hesitation last season, it is just beautiful to see Casey and Brett as a full blown couple. The two characters just seem happier now that they are together and it is a wonderful thing.
<br /><br />
<b><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-pgf90yb7UC0/YVobk-VHUFI/AAAAAAAAOcc/rut9AlB5qtoFBEeW1jZpebFhAgenGuHyACLcBGAsYHQ/s720/chimed.jpg" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="480" data-original-width="720" height="213" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-pgf90yb7UC0/YVobk-VHUFI/AAAAAAAAOcc/rut9AlB5qtoFBEeW1jZpebFhAgenGuHyACLcBGAsYHQ/s320/chimed.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>CHICAGO MED, "You Can't Always Trust What You See", September 22, 2021, Actors: Oliver Platt, Steven Weber, The Scene: The opening parking lot scene
<br />Joanna:</b> Opening parking lot scene where they are looking at Dr. Choi's parking space. This scene really shows how Dr. Archer has no insight into his actions and his immense bias towards mental health patients and Dr. Charles. He tries to lay blame on Dr. Charles for Choi being shot because he didn't put the patient on a psych hold when it was him completing surgery on the patient that was the cause of his outburst. I also love how they have Dr. Charles push back in his strong and restrained way by having him mention that the gun was pointed at Archer, not him, when Ethan was hurt. Great way to show their growing tension and nice way for the writers to continue to develop and vilify Archer in the eyes of the viewer.
<br /><br />
<b><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-NPofnBMyPGA/YVobp45ZTbI/AAAAAAAAOcg/ho2bmNqryPgP9z11RpFXYCEp0QVd8DaSwCLcBGAsYHQ/s768/chipd.jpg" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="479" data-original-width="768" height="200" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-NPofnBMyPGA/YVobp45ZTbI/AAAAAAAAOcg/ho2bmNqryPgP9z11RpFXYCEp0QVd8DaSwCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/chipd.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>CHICAGO PD, "Closure", September 22, 2021, Actors: Jesse Lee Soffer, Tracy Spiridakos, The Scene: Jay proposes to Hailey
<br />Jessica C: </b>If you've heard random squeals of excitement over the last few weeks, I'll take responsibility because Upstead is engaged!! Every time we're gifted with Upstead milestones, it feels like my love for them grows tenfold. And witnessing Jay getting down on bended knee in front of Hailey is certainly no different! Hailey explained that he gives her life a sense of normalcy and stability and that she wants to be married to him while Jay shared that he's known he wants all of the same things with her for years! They protect their relationship and are very intentional when expressing how they feel and what they want which speaks not only to how deeply they love one another, but how important the relationship is to both of them. No matter what obstacles may be ahead, that kind of love is too strong to shatter. Jay & Hailey are in this thing forever!
<br /><br />
<b><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-WVnot7nDUl4/YVobuilOhfI/AAAAAAAAOck/haeROBx8MkYUc8m9x1KPCOjX53pyoa2BgCLcBGAsYHQ/s720/doom.jpg" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="480" data-original-width="720" height="213" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-WVnot7nDUl4/YVobuilOhfI/AAAAAAAAOck/haeROBx8MkYUc8m9x1KPCOjX53pyoa2BgCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/doom.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>DOOM PATROL, "Vacay Patrol", September 23, 2021, Actors: Diane Guerrero, April Bowlby, Skye Roberts and more, The Scene: "Forever Young" dance
<br />Elvis:</b> As "Forever Young" by Alphaville starts playing in the background suddenly Kay (in the Underground) starts to move to the rhythm of the song with Jane following on the surface and in mere seconds she is joined by Rita, Cliff and Victor. (Larry's absence was felt). This dance scene was so extraordinary and it came at the right moment after the team faced some very bleak and depressing events. Even though this beautiful scene was cut short by a tragic ending, it felt so good to see the team so happy and connected. "Forever Young" is that one song that absolutely melts my heart so to hear it on one of my favorite TV series is an absolute wining combo. This scene is definitely joining my "best scenes of Doom Patrol" list.
<br /><br />
<b>LEGENDS OF TOMORROW, "The Fungus Amongus", September 5, 2021, Actors: Caity Lotz, Jes Macallan and more, The Scene: Avalance's wedding
<br />Alejandra:</b> Sara and Ava's love saves the day as it should.
<br /><br />
<b><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-fShquJo1tJY/YVobzn78f2I/AAAAAAAAOcs/_tn6iAEcl9APNl2P-SffdBb3nVVAv9MZgCLcBGAsYHQ/s720/luci.jpg" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="480" data-original-width="720" height="213" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-fShquJo1tJY/YVobzn78f2I/AAAAAAAAOcs/_tn6iAEcl9APNl2P-SffdBb3nVVAv9MZgCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/luci.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>LUCIFER, "My Best Fiend's Wedding" & "Goodbye, Lucifer", September 10, 2021, Actors: Tom Ellis, Lesley-Ann Brandt, Inbar Lavi and more, The Scenes: Lucifer says goodbye to Maze & Maze and Eve's wedding
<br />Justyna:</b> It's incredibly hard to choose just one final scene to highlight from the series' last season. So much has happened in these ten episodes that would be worth mentioning. In the end, I decided to go with Lucifer's goodbye with Maze. It's a surprising choice when I realize that these two didn't share too many memorable scenes since the show's early days. Despite their centuries-long friendship, it feels like they actually took a step away from each other a while ago and their relationship was never really the same after that. But in this moment, their history together felt more present than ever. Of all the goodbyes this felt like the most permanent and emotional one and both actors delivered wonderful performances during this last exchange. Both Lucifer and Maze are starting a new life that leads them in the opposite directions. And even though he can't exactly admit this is a goodbye, it's clear that she knows. Maze realizes the importance of this moment and it hits her much harder than she's willing to admit. The two aren't known for hugging people which is why the embrace between them means so much more. "I don't want you to worry about me anymore." "I wouldn't have any of it if it weren't for you." "You are my best friend, Maze. I just wish I'd always treated you that way before." These lines got me the most. Especially with the two trying to hide their emotions and tears behind a smile and a joke. Until they finally part ways... Also, a special shout-out to Ella confronting everyone at the wedding reception and Dan finding a way to talk to Trixie. Another two beautiful and heartbreaking moments. Kudos to cast & crew for all their wonderful work on the show.
<br /><b>Alejandra:</b> Mazeve Wedding - Maze finally being with someone who chooses her made my heart very happy.

<b>MIDNIGHT MASS, "Book III: Proverbs", September 24, 2021, Actors: Kristin Lehman, Hamish Linklater, Annarah Cymone and more, The Scene: The miracles sequence
<br />Lucas:</b> The Holly Holy sequence - miracles start to happen all over town. It’s the calm before the storm. Every character is happy, everyone is healing, things are changing for the better, love is in the air, and there’s a cheerful song by Neil Diamond playing. Midnight Mass might be a dark show, but I think this scene is really beautiful, and I love every second of it.

<b>MONEY HEIST / LA CASA DE PAPEL, "Vivir muchas vidas" (Live Many Lives)", September 3, 2021, Actors: Úrsula Corberó and more, The Scene: Tokyo's death

<b>ONLY MURDERS IN THE BUILDING, "The Sting", September 7, 2021, Actors: Steve Martin, Amy Ryan, The Scene: Charles and Jan flirt with music across the courtyard

<br />Justyna:</b> This final story of the season certainly took me by surprise. I was glad we finally learned Rick's backstory but it's the President Morty's plan and actions that stole the show for me. President Morty, or rather Evil Morty (as named by the fans) reveals that all he's ever wanted is to get away from the portion of the multiverse where Rick is the smartest man alive and finally be free of his restrictions. Years ago, following the death of his family and his unsuccessful search for the killer, Rick helped build the Citadel and walled off his own multiverse, creating the Central Finite Curve. A place where Mortys are supplied and many Jerrys and Beths across the multiverse are pushed to fall in love. This Morty feels trapped in the endless nightmare created by our Rick. "He's attached to us infinitely through his weakness and our forgiveness." President Morty chooses to leave, tired and sick of Rick, by any means necessary, thus making him Evil Morty. He is certainly causing a lot of pain and death around him and is far from a good guy, but I really enjoyed the fact that his plan was never about destruction or conquest, or even beating Rick, but rather setting himself and the multiverse free. The sequence where Morty's plan succeeds and he finally escapes as the "For the Damaged Coda" plays in the background, is perfectly done. Kudos!

<br />Justyna:</b> In the last week of September I decided to check out Netflix's latest hit - Squid Game. I've never seen a Korean TV show before this one, but knowing the general premise and being a fan of thrillers / action dramas, I figured it's about time to expand my horizons. To be honest, I'm definitely going to need a rewatch to process everything that's happened on the show. Such a wild and memorable experience. When it comes to highlighting just one scene from the first half of the season, I couldn't help but choose the first game when the true nature of the competition is revealed. There's definitely things prior to this moment that make you worried about what's about to happen but it's not until the first player is eliminated when the stakes and tension hit an insane level. We also watch our main characters as they struggle to survive the brutal massacre and learn some key information about them on their way to the finish line. Also, Ali saves Gi-hun in the most impressive way and it's hard not to get attached to at least some of these characters and root for their survival. Kudos to cast & crew for all the great work on the show!

<br /><b>Chlöe:</b> I'd never watched a single scene of Ted Lasso till this scene because it made such a massive splash on social media. Even though I had limited knowledge of the characters' arcs, this scene still made a huge impact with some great body language from Jamie Tartt as his father verbally abuses him in front of the team. Having now watched the entire series, the fact that it's Roy who goes to comfort him is perfectly framed considering his comments on Phoebe's father earlier in the episode and I will never forget the way Jamie flinched as Roy came over to him.
<br /><b>Folie-lex:</b> Roy hates bullies more than anything in the world. It's why when Jamie's dad shows up and is a complete ass to his own son, suddenly Jamie being a twat is irrelevant. Roy does what he knows best and is comforting and kind. And for Jamie comfort from his childhood idol was maybe the best medicine... Phil Dunster's shock-shift-into-breakdown is brilliant, while Brett Goldstein as usual conveys everything in his body language and facial expressions.
<br /><b>Beth:</b> After enduring the abuse his father has put him through his entire life, Jamie fought back and it was a VERY loaded moment. The entire team witnessed what Jamie has had to deal with and he stood alone and vulnerable after laying out his abuser, and then something amazing happened, he was shown comfort by the very last person you'd expect.... Roy. It doesn't mean they are besties, hell they probably still hate each other, but it doesn't matter because in that moment, it was just one human showing another kindness and understanding and it was beautiful.
<br /><b>Alejandra:</b> Emotional chaos, best scene I have seen this year. Period.
<br /><br />
<b>THE MORNING SHOW, "It’s Like The Flu", September 24, 2021, Actors: Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, The Scene: The hallway fight
<br />Giulia:</b> The two anchors come to terms with what happened in the season 1 finale. The fight is raw and real; Bradley is very upset with Alex, because she just abandoned her and Alex realizes that she has to face the consequences of her actions, which are not all positive.

<br /><b>Folie-lex</b>: Tim and Lucy have a "moment" - Under the most tragic of circumstances Tim and Lucy break that invisible physical barrier they have between them, as Tim offers Lucy the comforting hug she asks for... and the chemistry that fans have sensed since day one between them seems to be undeniable even to their characters anymore.
<br /><b>Beth: </b>Angela talks to Jackson's grave. In an episode filled with devastation and heart pounding moments, this scene just felt comforting in a weird way. Yes, Angela was talking to Jackson's grave and it was heartbreaking, but she did it holding her newborn son, a baby that got to be home with both parents in part because of Angela's rookie Jackson. It was a great way to show that even though Jackson is no longer there, his life and spirit will live on in the people that loved him and in his namesake, Angela's son.

<br /><b>Chlöe:</b> This episode finally delivered on giving Ross Marquand screentime as Aaron is a severely underrated character on the show and gets so few moments to shine. I could have picked any one of his scenes for this, but the nightmare right at the beginning sets up the rest of the episode so well, it just pipped out the other scenes. It was a haunting sequence as he's confronted with all the demons and enemies he's encountered with the enemies overwhelming him after Gracie vanishes and is a great way to showcase his fear and the hopelessness that drives him to desperate measures to protect her and everyone else he cares about. It's heartbreaking to see him with such fear and guilt and anger at the world considering when we first met him, he was basically preaching the power of friendship.
<br /><b>Lisa:</b> Princess tells Mercer that he has beautiful eyelashes.
<br /><br />
<b>TURNER AND HOOCH, "Witness Pup-tection", September 15, 2021, Actors: Josh Peck, Vanessa Lengies, The Scene: Erica and Scott act like dogs
<br />Folie-lex:</b> Erica drags Scott to the ground and makes him act like a dog just to get him to connect with his autistic witness. And we finally see Scott loosen up, and be fun and goofy and comfortable. It's an adorable scene that can't help but put a smile on your face.

<b>WHAT IF...?, "What If... Doctor Strange Lost His Heart Instead of His Hands?", September 1, 2021, Voiced by: Jeffrey Wright, Benedict Cumberbatch, Rachel McAdams, The Scene: Dr. Strange begs for the Watcher's help
<br /> Lucas: </b>Strange begs for the Watcher's help as the universe is destroyed and Christine dies in his arms - A powerful, tearful scene to end a dark episode. It’s the first time we see The Watcher talking to a character, in some interesting, well-written dialogue. Then, the world ends and Christine dies one last time, leaving Strange completely alone and broken. Truly memorable.
<br /><br />
<b>Y: THE LAST MAN, "Would the World Be Kind", September 13, 2021, Actors: Diane Lane, Ashley Romans, Ben Schnetzer, The Scene: Yorick and Jennifer are reunited
<br /> Giulia: </b>Of course no one thought that Yorick would be alive, even his mother, so to see Jennifer be completely and utterly surprised, destroyed, emotional and happy to see that her son is alive was incredible. Diane Lane knocks it out of the park in that scene, showing us how amazing she is.

Tara-Beth, a young woman, is dead. Riley Flynn, drunk and mumbling words, shockingly watches as his life changes after his actions led to someone’s death. He is sent to prison. He has bad dreams about Tara. He is at rock bottom, feeling isolated, guilty, and faithless.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Four years later, Riley returns home. His family lives on Crockett Island, an isolated place whose population is small and divided. It also deals with redemption, grief, religious fanaticism, death, and life. Here, Mike Flanagan proposes a horror story that doesn’t rely too much on action sequences and jumpscares. Instead, the miniseries focus on people reflecting, talking, and discussing with each other, especially on the first episodes, while an unsettling atmosphere and disturbing moments slowly steal the spotlight, culminating in two final episodes filled with crazy, dazzling, emotional moments. This means Midnight Mass is mostly dialogue-driven, which may not work for everyone, especially when you don’t know what’s to come and you’re expecting a more typical kind of horror.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-73Wb-Fri79U/YVIeZswCcfI/AAAAAAAADpk/5-90wwktwmAg4JhzhdD8htz4j7Z4Bk-swCLcBGAsYHQ/s1400/bev.jpg" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="933" data-original-width="1400" height="266" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-73Wb-Fri79U/YVIeZswCcfI/AAAAAAAADpk/5-90wwktwmAg4JhzhdD8htz4j7Z4Bk-swCLcBGAsYHQ/w400-h266/bev.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div style="text-align: justify;">However, to say it worked for me wouldn't be enough. I was left with so many feelings and impressions after I finished this show that I could talk about it for hours. I genuinely love it. While the supernatural plot slowly burns, the island faces a horror that hides in plain sight, walks in the light, and is very human, embodied by Bev Keane, a character created to bring out the worst in the viewers — and in the other characters too, I guess. Behind her calm, forcefully educated manners, Bev is a self-righteous, hypocritical woman who uses religion to fulfill her need to feel unique — like she was destined to walk through a higher and mightier path.</div></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Father Paul makes many mistakes throughout the story, such as bringing chaos (and a deadly creature) to the island and starting the whole thing (also, he kills someone along the way,) but the ultimate evil haunting the island is represented by Bev. Samantha Sloyan’s performance is pure gold. She brings to life a hateful character without making a caricature of her — Bev is nuanced and complex, and that’s so important for this to work.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">On the other hand, Kate Siegel wonderfully plays Erin Greene, Crockett's best teacher and final hero. Erin is a Christian who just wants to go to church and have some moments of faith — she's the opposite of Bev. Erin is my favorite character played by Kate so far. She has so many intense moments from episode 4 to the end, when the weight of the world falls right on her shoulders, and she still stands for what she believes and fights for it. Also, Erin’s final monologue will be stuck in my head for <i>a long time</i>.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><b><i>"Speaking for myself? (...) Myself. My self. That's the problem. That's the whole problem with the whole thing. That word, "self." That's not the word."</i></b></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0RZQiMuU00Q/YVIfgn4rO6I/AAAAAAAADp0/1VREznfFQlcs8fOWrhmi_TqfcDbHAH3VgCLcBGAsYHQ/s679/sheriff.jpg" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="382" data-original-width="679" height="225" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0RZQiMuU00Q/YVIfgn4rO6I/AAAAAAAADp0/1VREznfFQlcs8fOWrhmi_TqfcDbHAH3VgCLcBGAsYHQ/w400-h225/sheriff.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Rahul Kohli plays Sheriff Hassan, a Muslim man who lost his wife and decided to move to the island with his son, Ali. The Sheriff is a tragic figure, and one of my favorite characters of Midnight Mass. He’s trying to be accepted, he’s trying to be a good father, he’s trying to be a good friend to Joe, he’s also trying to move on from the past, build a new life, and overcome all the prejudice and hate, but there’s so much against him. It is impossible to not root for his success. Rahul is fantastic, bringing to life a serious and responsible sheriff that also looks so exhausted and vulnerable.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Hamish Linklater is Father Paul. His acting of a man full of light and darkness, capable of horrible things, but also heartful, caring, and good, is electrifying. Whenever he’s celebrating masses, discussing with Riley, and talking to Mildred, Sarah, or Bev, there’s heart, soul, flesh, and blood. He’s intense, uncertain, regretful, aching, but also full of love, and that makes him dangerous and tragic.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-wGyEuk_-3m4/YVIheZFcSoI/AAAAAAAADqQ/-CmyKAPbnkwp4yfDmnp5rmDNf23IDhovwCLcBGAsYHQ/s1920/riley.jpg" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="954" data-original-width="1920" height="199" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-wGyEuk_-3m4/YVIheZFcSoI/AAAAAAAADqQ/-CmyKAPbnkwp4yfDmnp5rmDNf23IDhovwCLcBGAsYHQ/w400-h199/riley.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Finally, Zach Gilford is Riley, a man struggling with addiction, guilt, and faith. His relationships with Erin and Paul are at the core of Midnight Mass. With the first, he experiences a calm, peaceful involvement — their growing love is so quiet, mature, and graceful to watch. On the other hand, whenever he’s talking to Paul, Riley is at war with himself. Their dialogues are rich with philosophical questions and powerful ideas, and they captivated me a lot.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><b><i>"And I remember there is no point where any of that ends and I begin. I remember I am energy. Not memory. Not self."</i></b></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">While these five are the main driving force behind the story, there are at least other eleven characters/actors worthy of recognition — this entire cast is fantastic. For this story to be so poignant and raw, we needed characters just as intense. Here everyone plays an important role somehow to sustain the plots and engage the viewers while the main topics are explored.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/--QnrCzgpbm4/YVIjSR1NtcI/AAAAAAAADqw/u5pZulbUxj0Iv-TwqtLqN9qbiqdAxEefACLcBGAsYHQ/s1000/walk.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="563" data-original-width="1000" height="360" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/--QnrCzgpbm4/YVIjSR1NtcI/AAAAAAAADqw/u5pZulbUxj0Iv-TwqtLqN9qbiqdAxEefACLcBGAsYHQ/w640-h360/walk.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">Such a stellar group of people means that there are so many good scenes. Bev discusses with the Sheriff about giving the Holy Bible to students. Erin stands by Hassan, while Wade and Dolly quietly agree with what Keane has to say.</span></li><li><span style="font-size: large;">The cave scene, when the creature makes its first appearance. I got goosebumps watching it.</span></li></ul><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-OUb0VecljDQ/YVIiak60HYI/AAAAAAAADqo/MWKSJXHxdFAiavs2WT7jlUZte7R76AvswCLcBGAsYHQ/s1200/kate12.jpg" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="675" data-original-width="1200" height="225" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-OUb0VecljDQ/YVIiak60HYI/AAAAAAAADqo/MWKSJXHxdFAiavs2WT7jlUZte7R76AvswCLcBGAsYHQ/w400-h225/kate12.jpg" width="400" /></a></div></div><ul><li><span style="font-size: large;">Erin and Riley talk about her baby. This beautiful dialogue makes me emotional every time I rewatch it.</span></li><li><span style="font-size: large;">The end of episode four, whose jumpscare left me screaming, and then the end of episode five, which left me screaming along with Erin. Riley forgiving himself and seeing a forgiving Tara was heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time.</span></li><li><span style="font-size: large;">Erin, Sarah, and Mildred join the group walking to church. They know the truth, they know something awful is about to happen, and there’s tension, fear, and lots of bravery about what they decide to do.</span></li><li><span style="font-size: large;">The midnight mass sequence. The whole show was leading to this dreadful, morbid, gory moment, and it was so beautifully executed. A true masterpiece.</span></li><li><span style="font-size: large;">Erin shots Bev. Later, Annie has a little talk with Bev and says everything we wanted to say to her. Iconic, truly.</span></li><li><span style="font-size: large;">Annie and Ed Flynn decide to remain faithful to who they are, not killing anyone and just staying together until the end. That part was so meaningful, I cried a bit. Kudos to Kristin Lehman and Henry Thomas.</span><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-k2AsuK5s6dE/YVIkOo-NaeI/AAAAAAAADrM/XXoJTXzuigUCSMy56zy8k9jgOQC_QmSCgCLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/medoc.jpg" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1365" data-original-width="2048" height="266" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-k2AsuK5s6dE/YVIkOo-NaeI/AAAAAAAADrM/XXoJTXzuigUCSMy56zy8k9jgOQC_QmSCgCLcBGAsYHQ/w400-h266/medoc.jpg" width="400" /></a></div></li><li><span style="font-size: large;">Bev refuses to help a miserable and confused man who just saw his family die in the worst possible way. I was angry before, but after this, I lost it all. Truly infuriating.</span></li><li><span style="font-size: large;">Sarah refuses to drink the blood and accepts death. Painful to watch, because I already loved Annabeth Gish's character and loved her even more — she did that just after discovering her dad's identity. Heartbreaking scene delivered by Annabeth, Hamish, and Alex Essoe.</span></li><li><span style="font-size: large;">Wade and Dolly are looking for their daughter Leeza. They'll never see her again, and they know they have a part in it. Reality bites, and it's painful. Great work, Michael Trucco and Crystal Balint.</span></li><li><span style="font-size: large;">When the creature is about to realize what Erin is doing, she grabs its head and puts it back on her neck. And then, Riley returns to one final memorable sequence: Erin’s monologue. Impactful, magnificent, unforgettable. I think people will talk about it for years.</span></li><li><span style="font-size: large;">Everyone is about to die. Also, everybody is singing. While <i>Nearer my God to Thee</i> plays and the people prepare for sunrise, Bev is the only one not at peace with herself. This entire sequence brought tears to my eyes and closed this journey in a heavenly way.</span></li></ul></div><div style="text-align: left;"><b><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-a7crMCGc1HM/YVIpOwXOQPI/AAAAAAAADrY/Zr7ZghP2nl44iKfmZB5CH2e4vpj2fe4UgCLcBGAsYHQ/s1920/sun.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="950" data-original-width="1920" height="316" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-a7crMCGc1HM/YVIpOwXOQPI/AAAAAAAADrY/Zr7ZghP2nl44iKfmZB5CH2e4vpj2fe4UgCLcBGAsYHQ/w640-h316/sun.jpg" width="640" /></a></div></b></div><div style="text-align: center;"><b><i>"And that’s what we’re talking about when we say God. The one. The cosmos and its infinite dream. We are the cosmos dreaming of itself. It's simply a dream that I think is my life, every time."</i></b></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">The soundtrack is amazing, from the musical score created by The Newton Brothers, to songs like <i>And the Grass Won't Pay no Mind</i>, by Neil Diamond. I'll be listening to some of these songs on repeat for a while. Also, a thing that I found strange was the ageing makeup on some characters — especially Mildred. We discover the reason why it had to be like that in the end, and Covid restrictions probably influenced the choice to not hire old actors, so it's an understandable (though not always believable) choice.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Finally, something that still resonates with me is that there are many religious people among the good guys. Erin, the Sheriff, Mildred, Annie, Ed, they are all believers of some kind. Still, they fight against the madness. When I started watching this miniseries, it seemed to me that its biggest conflict would be between faithful and unfaithful, believers and nonbelievers. But then, in the end, I don’t think that’s it. What I feel Midnight Mass is saying is, okay, we all believe in something — religion, science, nature, anything, but what is it for? Does faith move you like it moved Erin, or does it turn you into someone like Bev?</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><div style="text-align: center;"><b><i>"There is no time. There is no death. Life is a dream. It's a wish."</i></b></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div></div><div style="text-align: justify;">I loved this whole journey. It was awesome to live on the island for a while, and I will be certainly revisiting it many times in the future. What about you? Did you enjoy <i>Midnight Mass</i>? What are your favorite moments?</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><b><i>You can watch Midnight Mass on Netflix. This non-spoiler preview is here to prepare you for the miraculous journey coming later this week, with little teasers and first impressions based on what I watched. All images used are from promotional material.</i></div><div><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">In the first episode of <i>The Haunting of Hill House</i>, "Steven Sees a Ghost" (which was, by the way, my first contact with the Flanaverse,) Mrs. Dudley, young Steven, and Olivia Crain have a brief conversation about religion, faith, and the things in Heaven and Earth. While watching the first episodes of <i>Midnight Mass</i>, I couldn’t stop thinking of how some topics that have been present in Mike Flanagan’s works have come together in his latest release.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-RmaOl22NM_A/YUgKyJV0a5I/AAAAAAAADnY/wRR5xFQAl4EdjTAXXNewhKW4AlNQuOY5wCLcBGAsYHQ/s1400/priest.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="691" data-original-width="1400" height="317" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-RmaOl22NM_A/YUgKyJV0a5I/AAAAAAAADnY/wRR5xFQAl4EdjTAXXNewhKW4AlNQuOY5wCLcBGAsYHQ/w640-h317/priest.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><i><b>"This is the problem with schools these days. They teach you the secular world, smother you in science. And science isn't an exact science, you know. The world is dark, young man, and the only light is the light of the Lord Jesus Christ. We need his light in the night. In the dark. Do you know the Gospels, young man?" — Mrs. Dudley to Young Steven</b></i></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">That quote says a lot about what you will find in Midnight Mass. It’s all there. Grief. Pain. Loss. Horrors hiding in shadows. Terrors coming from deep down inside. And, of course, religion, faith, and the things in Heaven and Earth.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-dDF2b0Ni8jg/YUgL4cRYhtI/AAAAAAAADng/Kt_nI_6-16U1zg3D2llc3prznlKdDKRTQCLcBGAsYHQ/s1400/kate.jpg" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="933" data-original-width="1400" height="266" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-dDF2b0Ni8jg/YUgL4cRYhtI/AAAAAAAADng/Kt_nI_6-16U1zg3D2llc3prznlKdDKRTQCLcBGAsYHQ/w400-h266/kate.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>The story is, as the official synopsis reveals, about <i>"a small, isolated island community whose existing divisions are amplified by the return of a disgraced young man (Zach Gilford) and the arrival of a charismatic priest (Hamish Linklater).”</i> That’s all you need to know, trust me. While I think this series is a memorable journey anyway — even if I knew most of the revelations in advance, I’d still be astonished at how things unfolded — going in blind will make it so more impactful, tragic, and beautiful that you’ll want to rewatch it over and over again, just to see it in a new light. If you are anything like me, at least. It’s <i>that</i> kind of story. Anyway, try to stay away from spoilers on Friday, it will be worth it.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">That’s all I’m going to say about the plot. Now, I need to share with you some overall thoughts. It surprised me to see that after only seven episodes, I cared so much about the characters. Every one of them has a chance to shine, and it’s surprising how quickly I got attached to them and was invested in their appealing, multidimensional, relatable dramas.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1cFU8DERaVc/YUgMCwYCdeI/AAAAAAAADnk/CBuzz4QAO_w0ph96n2WwTAsi09Gn0dycwCLcBGAsYHQ/s1400/protag.jpg" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="933" data-original-width="1400" height="266" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1cFU8DERaVc/YUgMCwYCdeI/AAAAAAAADnk/CBuzz4QAO_w0ph96n2WwTAsi09Gn0dycwCLcBGAsYHQ/w400-h266/protag.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>The cast plays a huge part in this, of course. The actors get good material to work with, and they deliver powerful performances that will make you feel things, good and bad, uncomfortable and strange, unsettling and beautiful. Honestly, I feel like many of them are already <i>Performers of the Month</i> (in my heart, at least), and it wouldn’t be insane if some of them made it to the Emmys next year.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Finally, some quick comments:</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><ul><li><span style="font-size: medium;">I feel like the gore in <i>Midnight Mass</i> is heavier than in <i>The Haunting</i> series.</span></li><li><span style="font-size: medium;">The show consists of seven long episodes — the shortest is around 55 minutes. Most are 1 hour long. The best part: time really flies when you’re watching them.</span></li><li><span style="font-size: medium;">There’s <i>at least</i> one memorable scene per episode, and it was hard for me to choose my favorite chapter.</span></li><li><span style="font-size: medium;">Many aesthetically impressive scenes await you. Also, the soundtrack is gorgeous!</span></li><li><span style="font-size: medium;">I hope to help <i>Midnight Mass</i> make it to Quote of the Week and Scene of the Month! There are so many deserving, haunting moments.</span></li><li><span style="font-size: medium;">This show is not filled with jumpscares everywhere, but when they happen, oh! <i>You will remember them.</i></span></li><li><span style="font-size: medium;">There are some thought-provoking, touching monologues along the way; one, in particular, left me speechless, and I rewatched it many times.</span></li><li><span style="font-size: medium;">There's one despicable character you probably won't be very fond of, which means the actress <i>rocks</i>.</span></li><li><span style="font-size: medium;">In fact, as I said before, <i>the entire cast rocks!!!</i></span></li><li><span style="font-size: medium;">Religious moments and ceremonials are portrayed in such a believable way.</span></li><li><span style="font-size: medium;">I never pictured myself so anxious and nervous watching parents having a conversation in a classroom, but then I watched this.</span></li></ul><div><span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5VWXUNuFZCM/YUgKdZ9cLzI/AAAAAAAADnQ/0TZhICB0AdMrWlPKuSg2bQeYmqKnqXkOgCLcBGAsYHQ/s1080/everyone.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="678" data-original-width="1080" height="402" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5VWXUNuFZCM/YUgKdZ9cLzI/AAAAAAAADnQ/0TZhICB0AdMrWlPKuSg2bQeYmqKnqXkOgCLcBGAsYHQ/w640-h402/everyone.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">Honestly, I'm really looking forward to Friday! I want to rewatch it, this time with friends and relatives, so I can see their reactions, and we can talk about it. After all, this is a story filled with philosophical questions, poignant twists, and raw emotions, so there is <i>a lot</i> to discuss after finishing it.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Leave a comment with your expectations, and if you have any questions, ask, and you shall receive — <i>of course, within the non-spoiler limits</i>. And don't forget to come back to SpoilerTV once you've watched it to share your thoughts.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><b><br /></b></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><b><i>You're invited to join Crockett Island this Friday, September 24th, when Midnight Mass drops on Netflix.</i></b></div><div><br /></div><script type="text/javascript">var authorcode='LO';</script>Lucas Oliveirahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15467810990404779100noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29964715.post-54672455455689090012021-09-08T20:06:00.000+01:002021-09-08T20:06:43.843+01:00Midnight Mass - First Look Promos, Promotional Photos + Premiere Date *Updated 8th September 2021*<a name='more'></a><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-bncbr7Dp_QQ/YRE1vC4LjXI/AAAAAAAAYy4/_Z0DJb5I1fkhKd4aGu99NFG6qrNoExdbwCLcBGAsYHQ/s0/midnight-mass-first-look-promo-premiere-date.jpg" style="display: block; padding: 1em 0; text-align: center; "><img alt="" border="0" data-original-height="408" data-original-width="726" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-bncbr7Dp_QQ/YRE1vC4LjXI/AAAAAAAAYy4/_Z0DJb5I1fkhKd4aGu99NFG6qrNoExdbwCLcBGAsYHQ/s0/midnight-mass-first-look-promo-premiere-date.jpg"/></a></div>
