After investing so much time week after week watching their favourite characters' relationships blossom and develop, seeing the culmination of that love in the form of a marriage proposal makes viewers feel like they’ve crossed the proverbial finish line, experiencing a joy like no other. Regardless if the proposal is a grand gesture, or a simple act of love, it always manages to hit viewers right in the feels, often leaving them with a feeling of euphoria, or in a puddle of happy tears. As we patiently await the next TV wedding proposal, here is a run-down of some of the best character wedding proposals in TV history.

Monica and Chandler, Friends

In the two-part episode, “The One with the Proposal,” Chandler decides to tell Monica that he never wants to get married, as a way to deter her away from the fact that he is actually about to propose. When her old flame Richard re-appears and lets Monica know that he is prepared to give her everything she wants, including children, Monica is confused and upset because she really does love Chandler, she just wishes he would get it together. Just when Chandler thought that he’d lost Monica forever, he opens the door to her apartment and finds the room covered in candles, with Monica waiting to propose to him. As Monica got down on one knee, she was too caught up in the moment to continue, saying through tears, “there’s a reason why girls don’t do this!” Chandler drops to his knees, takes her hands in his and tells her that she has made him happier than he ever thought he could be, and vows to make her feel the same if she says yes. The scene also had the best laughter through tears moment ever, when Joey, who was waiting on the other side of the door with Phoebe and Rachel yells, “can we come in yet, we’re dying out here!”

David and Patrick, Schitt’s Creek

Who knew that such polar opposites could actually end up being the perfect match? At first, Patrick’s idea to take David on a hike seemed crazy, considering David is far from being the hiking type. However, the entire scene was a perfect testament to their relationship, Patrick pushing David out of his comfort zone and David going along with it (albeit complaining all the way), to make Patrick happy. During the hike, Patrick gets injured and David needs to let go of his hatred for the outdoors and his selfishness, in order to take care of the man he loves. These two balanced each other out, and it was sweet to see David take on Patrick’s role of being the care-giver in order to tend to his ailing boyfriend. Just when we thought the proposal was dead in the water, David romantically carried Patrick in his arms to the picnic spot and insisted they continue with the picnic. David’s genuine, heartfelt reaction when Patrick got down on one knee made the moment perfect and of course he said yes, how could he not?

Jim and Pam, the Office

Jim and Pam had one of the sweetest relationships on television, even if it took her a little longer to admit how she felt about him. When she moved to New York to pursue her dreams, Jim knew that he could not be apart from her for long. He had an engagement ring burning a hole in his pocket for months and he was finally ready to take the leap. He asked Pam to meet him at a gas station halfway between Scranton and New York. Even though there is a huge rain storm, nothing could stop Jim from making the moment happen, and so he proposed to Pam, in the rain, outside a gas station and she happily accepted. When you love someone so much, it doesn’t matter where the moment it happens, it only matters that it does.

Luke and Lorelai, Gilmore Girls

Some of the best proposal scenes in heterosexual relationships have been when the woman proposes to the man, as was the case for Luke and Lorelai. Lorelai was upset because Rory had dropped out of college. Luke immediately steps in, offering suggestions to help and as he is listing off option after ridiculous option, Lorelai realizes how much he loves her and how much she loves him. She interrupts and softly asks him to marry her to which he immediately accepts. She tries to tell him to take a minute to respond but he refuses, he doesn’t need a minute. He knows how he feels. There is no ring, no flashy spectacle, but the amount of love that is apparent between the two in this scene makes their proposal one of the best to date.

Derek and Meredith, Grey’s Anatomy

This could easily be one of the most unique proposals on television, and in real life. Derek decorated an elevator at Seattle Grace Hospital with medical scans and reminders of the important moments during their journey together. If that wasn’t romantic enough, Derek’s heartfelt speech about how wonderful Meredith is, including “you say you’re all dark and twisty, but it’s not a flaw. It’s a strength. It makes you who you are,” was swoon worthy. The other aspect that makes this proposal unique, is that Derek didn’t get down on one knee and he didn’t actually say “will you marry me.” To him, those words weren’t needed. He told her he loved her and wanted to spend the rest of his life with her and he knew she felt the same. Unfortunately, these two were never able to have their happy ending, but their proposal was definitely one for the books.

Brennan and Booth, Bones

As I said, some of the best marriage proposals on television have been when the woman pops the question and for Brennan and Booth, it was important that she was the one that asked. After eight long seasons of Temperance being adamant that marriage was not for her, this moment was everything that viewers, and Booth, had wished for but never thought possible. Temperance admits that she had been stubborn and she knows that marriage would make Booth so happy, which is all she really wants. Her proclamation, “I love you, I want you to be my husband, I want to spend the rest of my life with you,” was so heartfelt and sincere. Watching Temperance break down her walls for the man she loves was what made this proposal so absolutely perfect.

Nick and Jess, The New Girl

This proposal almost didn’t happen, after a hilarious set of misses that nearly had Nick give up and go home. Nick had planned what he thought was the perfect proposal, but soon learned that even the best laid plans can go awry and in this moment, that was totally okay. After chasing their dog into a drive-in movie theatre, Jess catches on to what Nick has been trying to do and just as he’s about to give up, telling her he wanted everything to be perfect, she tells him that this moment is perfect because it’s so them. As he gets down on one knee, their friends who were such a huge part of their lives, were there to witness it and that made the proposal even sweeter. It wasn’t the proposal Nick imagined, but it was definitely one to remember.

Sheldon and Amy, The Big Bang Theory

No one ever expected Sheldon to find love, let alone propose to someone, until he met Amy. Amy’s love for Sheldon is so clear. She is the only one that can tolerate his idiosyncrasies and manage his quirks with patience and in fact, it makes her love him more. Their proposal isn’t anything over the top, he shows up at her door and as she opens it, he is on one knee holding the ring. He pops the question before she can even say anything. Amy is absolutely shocked by the gesture. She had begun to accept that the moment may never happen, so of course she emphatically said yes. Their love is unique and special and the proposal was so absolutely fitting for them. Simple yet incredibly romantic.

Kate and Toby, This Is Us

It is not surprising that a proposal on This Is Us would leave viewers in tears, but how could it not with Toby and Kate? They had the most perfectly hilarious relationship and the proposal was just the same. The hilarity being Toby buying $200 worth of mall kiosk sweatshirts to spell out, “will you marry me?” The romantic part was Toby telling super self-conscious Kate that she deserved everything she ever dreamed of, including a big wedding. The icing on the cake for this proposal was that he asked for her father’s permission, even though he was deceased. Toby knew how much Jack meant to Kate, and he knew that this final step would be important in sealing the deal and it certainly was.

Rafael and Jane, Jane the Virgin

Jane and Rafael both wore their hearts on their sleeves, especially when it came to each other. They are the couple that hopeless romantics yearn for, and even though it took a long time for them to find their way to their happy ending, it was absolutely worth every heartache and struggle that came before. Rafael worked hard to change and become the man and father that Jane needed him to be, and he was all in and ready for forever. Knowing how important Jane’s family was to her, his proposal tying into a typical night of playing Loteria with her family, was simple yet perfect. The last card in the game was the ring, and when Jane turns to see Raphael on one knee with a ring in his hands, she bursts into tears and emphatically accepts. The thoughtfulness of the proposal, having every card be a moment in their relationship, was so absolutely perfect. Jane and Raph are one of the most romantic couples in TV history and this scene helped them earn that badge.

Ben and Leslie, Parks and Recreation

This proposal was perhaps the most fitting to who the characters are. Leslie always had to micromanage situations and be in control, almost to the point that she was preventing Ben from proposing to her. Thankfully, Ben was patient with Leslie and finally made the moment happen by planning a surprise trip home to see her on Halloween, getting down on one knee and popping the question. In true Leslie fashion, she interrupted the moment by telling Ben she needed a few minutes to remember every detail of the moment. Of course, Ben patiently waited and when she was ready, he continued and before he could even finish asking, she happily accepted. These two balanced each other out in every way and it was so nice to see them finally get to this moment.

Lucas and Peyton, One Tree Hill

Lucas and Peyton came from two different worlds, but that didn’t stop them from falling head over heels for each other from the moment they met. Despite a rocky road leading them in different directions throughout the course of the show, they always found their way back to one another and their love never faded. Lucas actually proposed to Peyton four times in total. The first time was shortly after graduation, when she told him she wasn’t ready because she escaped to LA because of the bad memories she experienced in Tree Hill. The second was over the phone when he asked her to elope in Vegas. The third proposal took place in the same hotel room that Lucas proposed in the first time, with the intention of re-creating the moment to have a positive ending. Finally in season 6, Lucas takes Peyton to the spot where they spoke to each other for the first time in Tree Hill. Even though they were already engaged, Lucas got down on one knee and presented Peyton with a beautiful ring and her response, “I am so glad you always knew me,” was absolutely perfect. This couple had one of the most epic television love stories of all time, the fact that it took four proposals to get to their happy ending, is a testament to how much they had to overcome to be together.

Helen and Max, New Amsterdam

Despite the disastrous turn that the show took in season 5, Helen and Max will always be one of the most perfect couples in television history. Despite Max being married in season 1, it is clear that he had an immediate connection with Helen, and she was definitely falling hard for the man that was not only her boss, but also her patient. These two were each other’s confidantes and best friends through three seasons. Helen saved Max from Cancer, helped him get through the death of his wife and she saved his life again, after he was exposed during a chemical spill at the hospital. When these two finally professed their love for one another, it was evident that marriage was inevitable. Max had planned a perfect engagement dinner and moonlight walk through New York. The scene of him practicing his proposal in his bathroom mirror was absolutely adorable, and showed just how much he loved Helen and wanted the moment to be perfect. But in another best laid plans go awry moment, Helen is drugged at a karaoke club and is admitted to the hospital. As Max sits by her side at her hospital bed, the two discuss their future and wanting children together. Max is so overwhelmed by his love for her that he decides to propose right there in the ICU, even declaring, “would you make me the happiest man in this whole ICU and marry me?” Helen’s emphatic, repeated “yeses” are the perfect response and it was such a huge “finally” moment for fans of the couple. It is too bad the show runners ruined their happy ending, but that’s a story for another day.

Barney and Robin, How I Met Your Mother

The most amazing thing about this proposal is that self-professed ladies man, Barney, went to great lengths to create the perfect moment for Robin, decking out a beautiful rooftop in rose petals and lights. True to his character, Barney fooled everyone by making them believe that he was proposing to someone else, so when he got down on one knee and proposed to Robin, she was genuinely shocked. He made it clear to her that this was the last play he would ever run, even naming it “the Robin.” At first, she didn’t realize the play was referring to her, chewing him out for putting her through this. When he got down on one knee, she immediately softened and was touched by the lengths he had gone through. They didn’t end up having a happy ending, but the proposal was romantic, fitting and memorable.
Cristina Almeidahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15611742100252361159noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29964715.post-15873691079044852182022-08-20T12:00:00.008+01:002022-08-20T12:00:02.285+01:00USD POLL : Which of these TV shows do you miss the most?

During the summer, with so few new scripted shows, we've decided that we'll maintain a single thread for the whole summer with a single spreadsheet covering all the shows that we cover. ie Scripted Drama and Comedy.

We will still be posting the full Final Adjusted Broadcast and Cable Ratings as usual each day where we have sufficient shows airing, and you can always see ALL the ratings, for ALL shows and ALL episodes in the Ratings Database.

Remember: No Spoilers in the Comments and please stay on Topic. If you want to chat about anything at all please use the Open Discussion Threads.

Jane the Virgin finally reached its 100th episode – the ending for all telenovelas. I’m not going to review “Chapter Ninety-Nine” because it was a retrospective and thus not part of the show proper. It was nice to see all the actors as themselves – and hear about how the show has impacted them, however. While this season hasn’t been my favorite, with many storylines seeming a bit too strained or repetitive – and thus demonstrating why good telenovelas bow out at episode 100 – the show did come to a satisfying ending with “Chapter One Hundred,” and this is definitely one show that I will miss. I’ll miss the comedy, the drama, the acting, the diversity, the writing, and the characters. And the three women at the heart of this story. This show broke so many barriers…How about you? What will you miss the most?

Let’s dive in – and weren’t you thrilled by the twist that the Narrator (Anthony Mendez – who didn’t really look the way I expected!) is a grown up Mateo (Elias Janssen)! “Chapter One Hundred” was written, as expected, by show creator and executive producer Jennie Snyder Urman and was directed by executive producer Brad Silberling.

The episode begins with a series recap – and focuses on the heart of the show – Jane (Gina Rodriguez), Xo (Andrea Navedo), and Alba (Ivonne Coll). In a flashback, Xo and Alba break it to a young Jane (Juliana Gamiz) that all telenovelas end – but it’s a happy ending! It gives Alba a chance to reassure those of us new to the telenovela genre too.
In the present, Jane is having trouble spending any of her massive book advance. Xo and Rogelio (Jaime Camil) show up and finally tell Jane that they are moving to New York to film Rogelio’s new show. Rogelio explains that he didn’t want to miss out on Baby’s childhood – or Jane’s adulthood, but New York is just a short flight away. Jane and Xo naturally dissolve into tears after Xo reveals that they are moving 3 days after Jane and Rafael’s (Justin Baldoni) wedding. It’s not at all hard to see these “I’ll miss yous” on the level of both Xo and Jane – and Gina and Andrea. Jane tries to pull herself together and be supportive, saying it’s good and it’s exciting…. The tag for the episode is Jane the <strike>Virgin</strike> Goodbye.
They still have a month, so Xo tells Jane that they just have to live their lives. Jane concentrates on editing her book, Rafael takes the lead on wedding planning, and Xo and Rogelio have to pack. Jane finishes and tries to accept that she’ll never be 100% satisfied with the ending – ah, another shout out to us! Endings are hard, my friends! With less than a week to go, Jane is ready to devote herself to all things wedding, and Rafael has a checklist.

Rafael has finished his wedding vows, but Jane hasn’t – because she’s been busy with her book. Did anyone think that Jane – the writer! – would have trouble with this writing assignment? I loved this part of the storyline.

Petra (Yael Grobglas) holds the rehearsal dinner – she’s Rafael’s best woman after all! Rafael asks Petra if she’s bringing a plus one, but she tells him that that’s not what she’s about – she’s happily married to the Marbella. #PetraMarbella #HospitalityEverAfter! Petra goes over the schedule for the evening and tells Rafael that she’s going to be making a speech – and it’s really funny. Rafael calls Jane, who quickly points out that Petra is NOT funny. Rafael tells her to just laugh when Petra pauses. Jane shares that the dress fitting was great – Lina (Diane Guerrero) crushed it – and the dress really is beautiful… though, like everyone else, we have to wait to see it!

Luisa (Yara Martinez) tells Jane that she’s found Rafael’s birthparents – and the Narrator points out that our last secret is about to be revealed… It turns out that both his parents are dead. But I loved that Jane asked telenovela questions – they weren’t crimelords? Rose wasn’t his mother?! But Luisa assures her that they were just regular people. Luisa gives all the information to Jane to tell Rafael.

Jane goes to Xo’s to pick up Mateo, who is working on a big surprise for Xo – which turns out to be unpacking most of her clothes. He doesn’t want her to move and doesn’t understand why she has to go with Rogelio. Jane tries to placate him with the fact that they can facetime every night, but Mateo is upset and points out that it’s not the same. It’s also clear that Xo is also really upset.

I loved the scene when Jane finally gets home with Mateo and Rafael is in bed reading to the twins. All the kids want to sleep in the bed with Jane and Rafael, and when Jane agrees, Rafael declares a family sleepover!

Rogelio tells Xo that they are going to drop the This is Mars pilot online to generate some buzz before the pilot airs in the fall. Rogelio is thrilled to finally see his dream reach American audiences. Rogelio is thrilled when #Thisismars starts trending almost immediately… but it turns out that it’s about a NASA mission. Rogelio is so distracted that he doesn’t notice that Xo isn’t as excited about all the big changes as he is.

Once the kids are asleep, Jane tells Rafael that his parents died in a car crash, lived in Italy, and ran a bakery. Jane says it’s a terrible time to find out – right before the wedding, but Rafael sees it as the perfect time because all he can think about right at that moment is how much he has – and that he’s literally surrounded by family. And then Mateo toots in his sleep…. Love how this show is so in tune with the audience’s emotions – we can’t get too teary eyed yet!

The rehearsal turns into chaos – on the third run through! It was wonderful to see Rita Moreno back as Rogelio’s mother – and hilarious when she goes straight for Mateo and not Rogelio to hug! She has a new protégé… Lina reveals that she is pregnant – after barfing in the flowers! Another happy ending!

Lina and Xo deliver heartfelt tributes to Jane at the rehearsal dinner. Rogelio says that becoming Jane’s father – late in life – was the greatest joy of his life – and his thrilled to be gaining a son and tells Rafael that he can call him Dad… which Rafael isn’t ready for, which is hilarious. Petra tries to bring some levity to the moment – and really, her joke about Jane marrying the ketchups was pretty funny! But Petra then breaks down – and it ends in her wishing them happiness in a group hug between the three of them.

Just as it seems the speeches are wrapping up, Luisa insists that she wants to make a speech too. She reminds them all that she was the one to accidentally inseminate Jane – and “you’re welcome!” Which does get the entire table laughing!

Jane suddenly has to leave the table to go write, and Rafael takes a moment to check in with Petra, who is still very emotional. She excuses it by saying that all Villanueva events are constructed to make people cry! She denies being choked up about love. When Rafael checks in with Jane, he thinks she’s finally writing those vows…. But she tells him that she’s finally got the ending to her book that will get her close to 100%! She’s emailed her editor to get the changes into the galleys going out to reviewers. Rafael is clearly disappointed and hurt that Jane still hasn’t written her vows.

After the dinner, Xo tells Rogelio that she doesn’t think that she can move to New York. She confesses that she just can’t leave her whole family. Rogelio tells her that he has to go because he signed a contract. Xo suggests that they commute for the first year, meeting up on weekends because she’s not going to see him during the week while he’s shooting anyway. Rogelio tells her that he wants her to be happy, and if commuting will make her happy, that’s what they’ll do – but Rogelio doesn’t look very happy about it.

Jane apologizes to Rafael for disappointing him and making him think she was putting the book before him. She tells him that she wasn’t worried about writing her vows because she knew exactly what she was going to say. She’s most excited about their future. It’s not like the telenovelas she grew up watching – their story isn’t ending with the wedding, it’s just beginning – and here the Narrator steps in to voice what we’re all thinking – Stop rubbing it in! (it is the end for us!!!) Justin Baldoni and Gina Rodriguez are fantastic in this scene – but even better is to come.

Jane gets a text – and heads to Alba’s for grilled cheese sandwiches and support. We get a fantastic scene with the three Villanueva women. Alba tells Xo it’s ok to be afraid, but it’s not ok to let the fear get in the way of living their lives. Xo makes Rogelio very happy when she calls to tell him that she is moving to New York with him.

Meanwhile, Rogelio drops in on Rafael to deliver a Mexican wedding lasso that is placed around the bride and groom as a symbol of unity. Rogelio’s father gave it to him, and now he’s passing it on to Rafael. Rogelio also apologizes for putting Rafael on the spot with the “dad” thing. Rafael still can’t say it – and apologizes that it just doesn’t roll off of his tongue, but he does tell Rogelio that he loves him. They are interrupted by Rogelio getting a whole lot of love from his followers – as his Twitter blows up and he goes from 9.5M followers to over 21M! He’s finally making it in America!

As it turns out, Jane doesn’t spend the night before the wedding with Rafael as planned, but in bed at Alba’s with Alba and Xo. When someone forgets to turn out the living room light, Alba gets up to turn it off, and we get a re-cap of all that has happened in that room – from Alba first arriving with Mateo Sr to that very night – summarized by Alba’s speech on getting her citizenship: She’s overwhelmed by the love and support in that room – as are we….

We get a final scene with the three Villaneuva women on the swing, watching the sun come up on their new lives. The moment is broken as Jane gets a text from her editor, which she deems not important – because a call comes in from Rafael – and it’s their wedding day! Rafael checks in to make sure that hair and makeup are arriving – according to his schedule! – and the doorbell rings as they arrive. He asks if Jane’s editor got the new ending in time, and Jane tells him that she didn’t but it doesn’t matter. The only way to get it into the review copies would be to deliver it to the printer on a thumb drive, and Jane assures Rafael that she’s not running off on a crazy adventure on their wedding day…. So of course, Rafael does!

Rafael gets the thumb drive delivered and convinces the only person in the publishing offices to deliver it, but then he can’t get out of the parking lot without running through the parking gate! He calls Jane, who tells him she’s right on schedule, to tell her that he’s been arrested and needs to be bailed out! And it wouldn’t be a real telenovela if there wasn’t some drama getting to the wedding, right?

Jane is actually thrilled by the romantic gesture and won’t let anyone else go and get Rafael – and of course Alba has the car to pick up Jorge (Alfonso DiLuca), so Jane has to get a car – which can’t get to her because of the marathon! Jane runs through the marathon – with many compliments on her hair – only to have her driver take off anyway. But then…. There is the bus – complete with an ad for This is Mars – and Rogelio’s picture which winks at her and tells her to get on! Because we couldn’t have the finale without just a bit of magic realism – and a bus!

Jane finally has something to splurge on. She can’t get the bus driver to just go to the police station, so she pays him $5000 to rent the bus and then has to give the passengers all $200 each! With 13 minutes to go, Xo calls and Jane says she’ll pick the rest of them up on the way to the church. As Xo, Rogelio, Alba, Jorge, and Mateo run across the marathon, Rogelio is knocked to the ground. Marathoners help him to his feet – and immediately recognize him from the show! And then we get a little taste of what’s to come – all the magazine covers he’s about to appear on! I loved the final headline on Vanity Fair being “Crossover” – and then we hear Xo yelling at Rogelio to “crossover” the marathon!

The women help Jane into her dress in the back of the bus, while the passengers all help to keep Rafael from seeing the dress! At the front of the bus, Rogelio helps Rafael by fixing his tie and reassuring him. He tells him that he was once a nervous groom (three times!), but Rafael will get there, and he and Jane will be so happy. Not always, of course, at times things will be difficult, but they will get through the hard times because there will be so much joy. And then Rogelio tells him, “Inhala, exhale” – which is some of the best advice anyone can give you! But of course, this also has a so many ripples back through this terrific show.

As they wait for the bride and groom, Petra tries to entertain the crowd – but no one wants to hear her jokes… and then, suddenly, JR (Rosario Dawson) is at the head of the aisle. Petra runs into her arms, and JR tells her that Rafael called her and made a big speech about how life is too short, and JR confesses that she’s been thinking about Petra and she never stopped loving her – and the two kiss.

Petra says she’s sorry about JR’s mother, and JR says she’s sorry about Petra’s – and Petra tells her that Magda (Priscilla Barnes) is gone… and the Narrator helpfully shows us where. Magda is somewhere in Siberia…. She knocks on a door, which is opened by the triplet! Who is Yael Grobglas made up like a guy! Hilarious! And don’t you wish we got to see how this is going to play out????

But, it’s also time for the wedding as the bus finally arrives. And of course, the wedding is taking place under Jane and Rafael’s tree. The Narrator reminds us that every telenovela ends with a wedding. Rafael walks up the aisle to join Petra, Alba – who is conducting the ceremony remember! And wearing awful shoes – and Lina. Petra thanks him as JR puts her hand over her heart. Rogelio and Xo follow down the aisle. The girls (Mia Allan and Ella Allan) follow throwing flower petals with ringbearer Mateo, and we get a nice shot of Esteban (Keller Wortham), Darci (Justina Machado), and baby in the crowd.

And then, it’s the big moment as we finally see Jane’s dress! I loved how we also got to see all the young actresses who have played Jane (Cali Dicapo and Jenna Ortega) as Xo and Alba remember her growing up as she comes down the aisle.

The ceremony begins with a reading by all three kids. Mateo surprises everyone by belting out his portion, and he tells Jane that he’s been working with Grandma – who says he’ll be great at voiceover work – and the Narrator assures us that he is! So has this been his story all along? I love this little twist.

Alba conducts the ceremony in Spanish and its quintessential Alba. I loved that she also quotes from Jane’s favorite author Isabella Allende. Rogelio and Xo do the Mexican tradition of the lasso. As Rogelio says that the everlasting bond between Jane and Rafael is sealed, Rafael looks up and calls Rogelio Dad. Justin Baldoni is so wonderful in this scene. But when he turns to Xo and says Mom, she says “no thank you!” – which is hilarious and keeps the moment from getting too heavy – because there’s SO much more crying to come!
It’s time for their vows. When Rafael can’t get past, “Jane” – he tells Jane to go first. She gets “the first time we met, you told me to be brave” out before she can’t go on either. Jane finally turns to the crowd – and we get nice shots of Marlene (Melanie Mayron) and Luisa in the crowd – and tells them that they are just going to read them for themselves. They exchange their notes. The read, cry a little more, and then jump into each others’ arms and kiss – but it isn’t time for that yet!!!
They exchange rings and more kisses – with Alba trying to maintain some decorum! She finally pronounces them husband and wife and lets them kiss – and we get the same shot of Rafael picking Jane up and kissing her as we got way, way back in the first season!

Wedding pictures follow – and Esteban proposes to Darci.

The show ends with Rafael and Jane taking a moment together under their tree. Rafael finally asks how the book ends now, and Jane tells him that they make it into a telenovela! Of course! Rafael teases her by wondering who would watch that! As the picture of Jane and Rafael is enclosed by a heart, Jane winks at us – and the show ends as meta as it’s always been! How I will miss this clever, clever show! And then, instead of “to be continued…” we finally see “The End.”

Endings are hard, but Jane the Virgin nailed the landing. I will miss these characters, the wonderful acting, the poignant and socially relevant storylines, and the amazing and creative writing. It’s rare to find all of these things in one small package, yet Jane the Virgin did it. I’m also really disappointed that projected spinoff is not going forward at the CW. After Jane the Virgin gave them so much award show love, it seems doubly hard that the CW would be so short-sighted. With luck a bigger and better network will snap the project up – Netflix anyone?? What are your thoughts on the finale? The series? Let’s get some grilled cheese sandwiches and discuss!

Jane the Virgin “Chapter Ninety-Eight” was written by Carolina Rivera and was directed by Gina Lamar. I can’t believe this fabulous show only has two more episodes left! But that’s the telenovela life, isn’t it? This episode begins to wrap things up, and we see an end to both Michael’s (Brett Dier) and Rose’s (Bridget Regan) stories. Michael’s was disappointing but Rose’s was a fabulous call back to the first season! And kudos once again to the fabulous Gina Rodriguez (Jane) who reminds us that she can do comedy and drama with equal aplomb…

As the episode opens, Jane is traumatized by Rose being once again on the loose. Luisa (Yara Martinez), who apparently volunteered to help the police to protect Rafael (Justin Baldoni) and his family, has gone into protective custody. Eventually, Jane seeks professional help, which leads to her learning EFT – Emotional Freedom Technique – and some hilarious tapping moments throughout the episode.

Jane is also dealing with some good news when Lily (Emmy Raver-Lampman) tells her that publishers love her book and want to have lunches with her. Before she can get to even one, however, it’s cancelled because Michael hasn’t signed off on giving them his life rights to his part of the story – and if you are wondering, that is a real thing.

Naturally, this leads to Michael coming back into Jane’s life. I loved that Rafael is absolutely fine with Jane seeing Michael even though he thinks that this is a ploy by Michael to try to win Jane back. In fact, it turns out that this was really a test by Michael’s pregnant fiancé Charlie (Haley Lu Richardson). I was hating Charlie just as much as the first time – and was glad that it appeared Michael _had_ to marry her (shotgun wedding), but Richardson shows that she really can act when Charlie reveals that she didn’t want Michael to sign because she was insecure about his former relationship with Jane. It’s only when she overhears him tell Jane that he’s going to support Charlie because she’s his life partner that she gives in – and Jane can go back to selling her novel.

And, of course, then Rose shows up in Jane and Rafael’s home! She takes Jane hostage – and this is really a terrific scene between Regan and Rodriguez. I loved that Faith the cat found Regan’s performance so genuine that she started to react to it! Rose forces a terrified Jane to call Luisa and force Luisa to come to the premiere of This is Mars. In the middle of waiting for Luisa to call back – because, of course, Jane got voicemail, Lily calls again with an offer from Little Brown to buy the book for $25,000! Rose grabs the phone and turns the offer down – as Jane’s lawyer – they’ll take the risk that someone will offer more, and of course, Rose isn’t risk averse! In the end, of course, this works to Jane’s advantage, so Rose actually did Jane a favor in the end.

Things are going really well at the Mirabella for Petra (Yael Grobglas) and Rafael. She has a lead on the first new hotel in the chain – in Britain! She suggests that Rafael quit his real estate job and commit completely to working with her again. It’s the life he always wanted – in season one. She even offers to let him move back into his penthouse – then his entire family would be under one roof and he’d get to see them all more. We get a terrific scene with Rafael in the empty penthouse calling Jane to tell her. It’s both a nice throwback to season one – and a terrific metaphor that that life is now empty to him.
Petra learns that JR’s mother has died – and we get the super creepy detail that Krishna (Shelly Bhalla) likes reading obituaries! Petra is tempted to go to the funeral, but Rafael convinces her that that’s no place to rekindle a romance. In the end, Petra settles for sending flowers and a note.

Rogelio (Jaime Camil) and Xo (Andrea Navedo) continue to make plans to move to New York for the show. Xo finds a nursing school to transfer to, but Rogelio is having trouble convincing Darci (Justina Machado) to move back to New York – she’s from there after all! Rogelio refuses to miss any of Baby’s childhood – it’s why he agreed to be a second banana after all! Darci won’t move because Esteban (Keller Wortham) won’t move. He pretends that he’s now more interested in being a wellness counselor than acting!
Rogelio thinks he has to convince Esteban that he still wants to act - and is, of course, inspired by himself! In the end, of course, the whole thing is simply a plot to get Esteban a juicy role on This is Mars – and he gets to be the villain – how appropriate! I love how meta this show is! I’m really, really going to miss how clever the show is. I did love the scene at the end where Darci and Esteban celebrate by jumping up and down as soon as Rogelio is out of the room too.
Naturally, the climax of the episode comes at the premiere party. Once again, Jane is in a silly costume – this time as an alien not a mermaid! – serving drinks. It’s painful as she hopes all her friends and family will recognize her. It’s also pretty funny to notice the height difference between the two aliens! While we go from one group to another, we stop briefly with Rafael and Petra who are wondering where Jane is. Petra confides to Rafael that maybe she’s just going to be alone – married to the hotel. I’d rather Petra ended up with someone – but I really, really hope that someone isn’t Luisa… who is also gay and who tells us at the end that she knows all kinds of great vacation spots….

Rose takes Jane up to the roof where Luisa is supposed to meet them. Jane finally snaps and confronts Rose. And then, of course, Rafael realized it was Jane – and he tackles Rose from out of nowhere! Then Rose turns the gun on them, but is distracted by Luisa’s appearance. Luisa pretends to swallow cyanide, and Rose kisses her so that they can die together, but it’s just a tictac! Luisa uses the distraction to push Rose off the roof and she lands on Rogelio’s tail! I love the way this makes that tail so important! But even more, it’s a perfect mirror to the murder that started the Rose story to begin with in the first season. And just to make sure that Rose is really, really dead, she gets set on fire too – and everyone thinks it’s just part of the show!

Rafael later thanks Luisa, and then both Rafael and Jane invite her to the wedding and back into their lives. Lily calls to tell Jane that she is going to put the book up for auction. Rafael tells Jane that he quit the Mirabella and that his dream has changed. All he wants now is that little house with the white picket fence and his family. Jane worries that he won’t be happy with a “smaller” life, but Rafael has finally realized – like even Rogelio has – that it’s not a smaller life.

I loved the scene as Jane and Rafael nervously wait for the bids to come in. Baldoni and Rodriguez are both terrific in this scene. And of course, in the end, Jane gets $500,000! They’re rich! Xo and Rogelio are thrilled – but Xo suddenly realizes that she will miss so much of what comes next for Jane – she doesn’t know how she can say goodbye – and I don’t know how I can say goodbye to this clever writing and these wonderful actors! SOB!!!!!

What did you think of the episode? Did you like how they wrapped up Michael’s and Rose’s stories? Should Petra find love before the end? Justyna: Throughout the episode we follow Daisy's struggle with her own feelings about Coulson's death and Sarge's strange presence. Despite everyone asking her to take a closer look and consider whether a part of Coulson still lives (as Sarge) she refuses to accept this as a possibility. Daisy has always had a hard time confronting the loss and sudden change in her life, so it's not surprising to see that she never allowed herself to read Coulson's goodbye letter. When she finally does the reality hits her even harder and she's determined to figure out the mystery of Sarge and end him once and for all. She takes a great risk, she asks him to let the rage in, antagonizes him against her, until finally the only choice left is to confront him and kill him using the weapon he prepared for Izel. It's a difficult task, to face someone who looks exactly like the person you love, but it becomes impossible when Daisy finally sees Coulson in Sarge's behavior. As strange as it is there is clearly a part of him that remembers her and the entire team. He even calls her by her old name (Skye), and it's clear how much this means to her. Daisy's reaction is deeply emotional and beautifully acted by Chloe Bennet. The look on her face, when she understands that Sarge was about to sacrifice himself, something that Coulson would have done, says it all. It's not only a confirmation for Daisy, but also for the viewers. A part of Coulson still lives on and is strong enough to keep Pachakutiq contained, at least for now. This felt like a reunion between Daisy and Coulson and as someone who used to love the relationship between these two, I couldn't help but highlight this scene. This part stole the hour for me and it was another great one. Kudos to cast & crew for all their wonderful work. Special shout-out to Clark Gregg and Chloe Bennet who are incredible together.
Jamie: While I would've liked this to have happened a bit sooner and a with a bit more actual talking (and a kiss), this is still a huge thing for a Disney show. It's a shame that this was the series finale. I'm really going to miss this show.
Klutzy girl: As much as I would have liked for Cyrus and TJ to admit they liked each other and kissing, the fact that they even held hands is a big step for Disney. I'm hoping this opens the door for other LGBT characters and couples on the channel.
Justyna: Celeste has certainly not been the most stable character on the show. She's been through so much physical and emotional pain that it feels impossible for her to just carry on with her life. That is why her testimony in last week's episode wasn't the greatest way to reassure the judge that she's perfectly capable of taking care of her children. That's also what makes this moment even more impactful to me. Celeste does incredible job in this questioning, she's a lawyer, she points out the facts, asks the right questions and stays calm throughout the scene. Mary Louise has been verbally taking down all the people around her this season but this time she does not get to do that to Celeste. Instead her daughter-in-law turns the tables on her and starts asking about an event from young Perry's life - a car accident that caused his brother's death. It's Mary Louise's behavior that is put under the microscope, the way she wasn't able to keep her children safe, how she influenced Perry and certainly is one of the reasons he became the man that he was. When Mary Louise calls Celeste a liar she stays strong and asks about Jane before playing a horrifying video which proves that Perry abused his wife and their children witnessed that. The fact that they're the ones who filmed the attack was probably the most painful part. A hit that I didn't see coming. Everyone's reactions to the video said so much, if there were any doubts about Celeste's story that wasn't the case anymore once the video started playing. Even Mary Louise isn't able to say a word anymore. It's traumatic but the scene is a win for Celeste, a story of survival, a mother fighting for her children. It's also a masterclass in acting. Nicole Kidman and Meryl Streep are especially wonderful in this moment, but the rest of the cast also taking part in the scene is a great support. Kudos to the entire crew of the show for all their memorable work.
Laura B: Celeste takes on Mary Louise in court.
Claire: Mary Louise gets her comeuppance from Celeste during the courtroom showdown. Celeste takes Mary Louise down from the high horse that she has been riding all season and it felt satisfying to see ML being called out for her role in this mess. Her son, Perry, didn’t become a wife beater without a little help from mom.
Jamie: Davia and Dennis sing together. Aside from the fact that these two are super talented and that this was a beautiful cover of that song, there was so much emotion in this scene. I can feel the show building to something for these two and I can't wait.
Luana: Malika and her friends perform. This scene was so powerful and intense, I can't really find better words to describe it. This is not the first time it has been said, but this is definitely something in need of constant repetition. It just highlights the importance of art in the redefinition of beauty and the box it has been put in by some. I love how this show continues to litigate these issues, among so many others, and it's what makes Good Trouble truly special.
Luana: Jane the Virgin is coming to an end pretty soon, I just can't believe there's just the double finale left, but I'm glad I was able to leave my prejudice at the door here and enjoy this wonderful ride. I also think this was the perfect time to wrap up Rose's story and her sick love for Luisa. Speaking of which, Luisa's journey has for sure been a rocky one, but I'm so glad she was finally able to redeem herself and be officially invited back into Raff and Jane's life.
Sandi: The show has a habit of leaving the audience in the dark as to what is going on between characters after leaving them in an intriguing scenario, none more so than when Rosalie turned on her kidnapper-cum-rescuer a couple of weeks ago. Rosalie’s break was scary to witness through this extended scene as we finally came to understand her character through the ever-widening eyes of the hogtied Bennie as he endured the descent through her unhinged mind. He was warned that this obsession he had would become a problem, and I’m not entirely sure that danger is over now he has managed to free himself from the physical restraints she put him in. He is the one man Charlie depends on to be the fastest on his feet if any trouble comes his way, but if Rosalie is holding Bennie’s attention instead then will he still be able to defend his boss when called upon.
LEGION, "Chapter 24", July 22, 2019, Actors: Rachel Keller, Dan Stevens
Justyna: I'm so glad to see Octavia's path towards redemption. It's not going to be easy, it will take time, but she appears to be aware of that since she's started to take small steps towards rebuilding her broken relationships, first in the one that matters to her the most - with her brother. During the hour these two finally have an opportunity to talk and Octavia makes the most of it when she attempts to apologize, fully aware that the words "I'm sorry" are simply not enough. She recognizes that he was right to leave her behind, she knows that she'll have to prove herself and earn her brother's trust, but she believes that the anomaly allowed her to come back for him and she has no intention to give up on their bond. Octavia even admits how lost she felt without him, without her rock she got trapped in the darkness and couldn't see a way out. It's the most emotional moment of the episode. It's both heartwarming to see Octavia reaching out to Bellamy and heartbreaking to see his response. It's clear how painful it is for him to keep his distance but after everything that's happened he knows that actions speak louder than words and from his perspective he hasn't seen any real change in his sister yet. Even though the two didn't embrace or shared "I love you" like they used to, this moment was still a great progress in their relationship. Just talking to each other and Bellamy seeing Octavia as his sister again, that's a ground to build on. I remain hopeful that these two can still be a family despite all the horrors in their past. Marie Avgeropoulos and Bob Morley gave beautiful performances in this scene and kudos to Bob Morley for directing this great episode. I can't wait to see more of Octavia and Bellamy in the next one.
Milo: I've really enjoyed Octavia's arc this season and her character hasn't been given an easy route to redemption. Seeing that scene between both Octavia and Bellamy play out fit perfectly with the themes of the season about the characters trying to learn from their past mistakes and do better. It might not have been the most action packed moment of the episode, but it was one of the more heartfelt and emotional scenes. Give me more of that dynamic between The Blakes and Clarke, too.
Luana: Clarke plays Josephine. Eliza has been killing it and this is all we needed to see before this specific arc ended, to see Clarke play Josephine to perfection but with still enough of her own personality in there and her concern for Madi to show she's still Clarke. I know this particular story is coming to an end but I have found it one of the best arcs of this show in a while and just in time to begin the wrap up of the show to perhaps give us the satisfying conclusion we're all hoping for.
Sandi: The bad side of superheroes has never been done so deliciously evil before, and Tony Starr makes for a superb villain at the head of corporate crime fighting superhero squad, The Seven. The total disregard for life he shows after being the cause of the plane's eventual crashing out of the sky is callously apathetic, but it is Dominique McElligott’s reaction to this incredulous behaviour which really sells the cruelty of the situation further.
Claire: June and the Lawrences’ are in the master bedroom, being forced to perform the sexual ceremony and June looks at them both and says: “how long did you think it was going to take before this world that you helped to create came for you, too?” It was beautiful retribution. And I think that June is finally getting through to Commander Lawrence and will end up with a true ally. Glad to finally see some forward momentum in this season! Elisabeth Moss, Bradley Whitford and Julie Dretzin who is a fabulous addition to this season. I love seeing her story, dealing with mental illness in a place that forbids psychiatric medications, play out. Also how aware she is of everything; telling June that her husband is a war criminal and rightly so. So many of these wives seem to have their heads buried in the sand so Mrs. Lawrence is a refreshing change up.
Laura B: June helps the Lawrences through the whole ordeal they thought they could avoid.
Sandi: June tells Fred "At least it wasn't you." I was going to go with the previous scene of having the Lawrences being forced into the ceremony right up until this line from June. The fact that the last time June was raped was by Fred and Serena in order to induce childbirth is not something that anyone had forgotten I'm sure. Sometimes it's the small victories that count, and with these five simple words she managed to wound his manhood, pride and dignity in no short order. Armed with the secret knowledge that this enforced act from the Waterfords also brings together the last part of the plan of getting the Gilead children freed, it's no wonder June found renewed strength to stand up to him and say these words.
Justyna: Another excellent hour of AoS. I absolutely loved finally learning the truth about Sarge but in the end I decided to highlight this sequence instead. It's the most tense scene of the episode and ends with the most tragic of consequences. The team is able to figure out that Izel has been using different people to shoot Sarge and search for something in the HQ. They're unaware of her current location and suspect that any of them could be possessed. I liked their logical approach to the situation, sharing a secret to prove they're still themselves, Mack's realization about Daisy and Yo-Yo and finally the way he was able to identify Fitz as the one under Izel's control. The moment was building up to this reveal and it worked really well, especially as the viewers were only aware of Izel's last attack on Deke. But it's hardly where this scene ends. Izel proves just how dangerous she is when she keeps on switching the bodies depending on the team's response. She almost gets Mack to strangle Deke, she forces Piper to shoot her own hand and finally she causes Davis to fall to his death. Such a heartbreaking part. Davis' character has really grown on me and he was both a competent agent, as well as a great source of comic relief whenever things seemed too dark on the show. His death certainly hits hard, it feels like an end to the happier time for the team. As brief as it was. And the fall itself, the fact that there was nothing anyone could have done, the knowledge that Davis was barely awake from his possession while falling, it all makes this even harder. The entire sequence is wonderfully acted, written and directed. Kudos to the entire cast & crew for all their memorable work. Goodbye Davis, truly one of the good ones.
Prpleight: The mystery of the body snatcher. From the moment that Mack wisely locked down the base the tension of the episode ratcheted up. Mack proved his appointment to director wasn't a mistake. The moment the body jumping is mentioned he locks down the base. Then, when he clears YoYo and Daisy, he locks them away where Izel can't get to them. Then Izel proceeds to play musical bodies in an effort of proving that they really can't do anything to stop her. Unfortunately she solidifies her point in the way she kills Davis. It was one of the more intense games of cat and mouse I've seen in a while.
Laura B: Celeste fights back. It's hard to believe that there is only one episode left, as every episode continued to spiral further and further down. Celeste has been similar to her season one counterpart in that she has found a way to numb herself from the truth of her experience, but it has nearly cost her her children, as Mary Louise takes Celeste to court over custody. Through the first part of the trial Celeste was portrayed poorly, as she couldn't really find a way to turn things around, but then at the last minute Celeste seems to have been able to pick herself up and find that much fiercer voice we saw last season when she helped Madeline out with the play as she now calls into question Mary Louise's own fitness! It was just great to see Nicole Kidman transform like that again!
Claire: Ed walks in on a tipsy Madeline cleaning out her closet in her wedding dress, which hilariously won’t zip up anymore. She’s dancing around and singing a little Patti Smith from their wedding. I’m rooting for these two to save their marriage and it was nice to see this little crack in the armor that Ed has had to put up to avoid being hurt again. The wonderfully underrated Adam Scott and Reese Witherspoon. Runner up: Bonnie reading the letter, admitting her guilt as Perry’s murderer to her comatose mother. I felt a great sense of relief in this truth telling.
Saloni: Bonnie's speech to her mom, who is comatose.
Luana: Celeste takes the stand. This was definitely hard to watch, but it felt so real, like exactly the way in which a lawyer would proceed to discredit a mother, and though some of her choices are pretty questionable, Mary Louise could've helped without making things worse for everyone. Still, as enraging and depressing as this was, Kidman did an amazing job.

GRAND HOTEL, "You've Got Blackmail", July 15, 2019, Actor: Justina Adorno
The Scene: The reveal about Yoli and Sky
Jessica C: Yoli goes through a keepsake box that includes a photograph revealing she and Sky were romantically involved. If this twist was clear to everyone else, I was none the wiser! This came as a complete surprise. I always assumed Sky was involved with someone at the hotel and I knew it was far too easy for that person to be Javi, or even Mateo. But I never imagined it could be Yoli.
Luana: The thought of Mateo being swapped at birth snuck into Jane's head and it wouldn't let go, and I think we've all been there, that moment when this one terrible thought creeps into our conscience and it's impossible to ignore. I love how they managed the whole thing and it only showed how strong they are as a couple and as parents as well. I'm not exactly looking forward to this new Rose comeback but I like the way the show is heading towards the end.
Sandi: Gentry White has been outstanding as Charles Jr, but this scene took the psychopathic nature of his character to such dark depths that it was more than uncomfortable to watch this torture sequence unfold. He plays the cruel and disturbing side of the role with such cavalier nonchalance you never quite know what he will do next, aside from looking after number one of course. Josie never really stood a chance, though Jodie Turner-Smith kept me right on the edge of my seat thinking that she might actually be able to pull off an escape during the cat and mouse chase, until that very last second when Jr appeared as if from nowhere.
Prpleight: The world is upside down. Johnny and Dutch are married, D'av is a solo Killjoy hunting for Jaq, and Pree represents the RAC. With a little outside help Dutch remembers the truth and, after a little sleuthing, gathers the objects she needs to jar Johnny, D'av and Pree back into their right minds. I thought it was gonna work. It had to, didn't it? We were at the end of the hour. All Dutch had to do was stop them from returning to the decontamination unit that was being used to maintain the alternate realities.....and then we discover that The Lady had a back up plan! The rain that the guys just stepped into is a secondary way of reprogramming the people of Westerley. ARGH! They got me! I love it when I make the wrong guess about the direction one of my stories is going to go.
Laura B: I would love to include every single scene from this episode into my scene of the week choice! Everything was impressively shot and I just loved the concept playing with all of the temporal anomalies with the time-eating demons the episode explores. I chose this scene though, because it shows us David's growth as a character. It's true he's been hugging a very gray line between being an underdog hero or becoming the worst villain imaginable. But when he finds Lenny after she went through an emotional temporal experiences that involved seeing her potential daughter Violet grow up before her very eyes, David asks her if she wants him to take her pain away and she says "no". David respects this and walks away. It's important because it ties back into another scene where Syd was talking to younger version of herself and reminding us of why she feels she can't love David anymore, as he wiped some of her memory last season. David just gave someone else a choice, and that could be a step in a redeemable direction.
POSE, "What Would Candy Do?", July 16, 2019, Actors: MJ Rodriguez, Dominique Jackson and more
Prpleight: Abby arrives planning to check the results of the sample she risked her life to retrieve and finds that she's been locked out of the lab. Her new boss (played by Adrienne Barbeau, yay!) informs her the sample was placed on full lockdown and escorts her to a conference room for an explanation. Instead she's greeted by Sutherland's money man, who initiates a full court press to get Abby to use Alec's trust in her to bring him in for experiments. The strong implication is that taking Alec's side will cost her her career. She chooses Alec and storms out of the office. It was an unexpected moment that moved the story in a different direction.
Justyna: It's no wonder this scene was highlighted by multiple members of our team. It must be one of the most emotional and powerful moments the show has ever done. It's focused on the "heart and the head" of the series - Bellamy and Clarke. I've been really enjoying all of their interactions during the season but this one is unlike anything else we've seen in the past. It's the culmination of their journey so far. I was always under the impression that this show is at its best whenever these two are at its front and center. Whether it's planning a defense against the Grounders' attack, rescuing their people from Mount Weather, ending A.L.I.E. or looking for a way to survive the radiation and the death wave - these two working together were always one of the show's greatest strengths. That's probably why this is quickly becoming my favorite season since the second one. The storyline of Clarke's body being stolen by Josephine could have gone in so many directions, but the one chosen by the writers turned out better than I hoped. Not only we got to see Clarke actively fighting to stay alive while confronting her past, it also gave the show a chance to reunite these two against a common enemy and find a way to rebuild their broken relationship. It truly feels like they're stronger than ever and I can't wait to see them take a stand against Sanctum and the Primes. About the scene itself, a big shout-out to the cast, especially Bob Morley who perfectly portrayed the most vulnerable side of his character yet. Bellamy refuses to let Clarke die and admits just how much he needs her. He recalls their conversation about "the head and the heart" and is determined to keep her heart beating. It's a beautiful act of love and exactly what Clarke needs at the moment. She almost gets destroyed by Josephine but Bellamy's desperate plea for her to "get up and fight" seems to give her enough strength and motivation to win the confrontation. Bellamy's efforts end with Clarke's true return and the amount of relief and joy on everyone's faces means the world. I'm also very glad to see Octavia and the part she plays in the scene. She tries to be there for her brother and gets to witness the emotional reunion. There's so much that can be said about this moment, I haven't even mentioned Gabriel letting Josephine go, but truly, this one has to be seen and felt through the actors' performances. Kudos to the wonderful cast & crew for this memorable scene. Can't wait to see what's next.
Sierra: Bellamy brings Clarke back to life. This was quite possibly one of the most powerful scenes that the show has ever had. It played upon the frequent head and the heart theme between the two characters. Bellamy refused to let Clarke die and wouldn’t stop at anything to keep her heart beating. This was the first time we’ve ever heard Bellamy explicitly state that he needed Clarke. It was an incredible moment for fans of the show.
Luana: This scene was pretty great, even though we knew she wasn't going to die, it was a great moment for the characters and for the actors to show off their chops, Eliza has been killing it with this arc and Bob Morley was especially great on this scene but Marie Avgeropoulos and her reactions to Bellamy's pain were also a big part of driving the point home, she doesn't know what would happen to her brother if he lost Clarke again and I can only hope he's realizing that as well.
Beth: The way Bob Morley played this scene was one of the most heartbreaking moments I have ever seen him do as Bellamy Blake. As Bellamy begged Clarke to live and breathed life back into her, Clarke heard his plea and finally regained her body in the triumphant moment most fans have been longing for since Josephine took over. The scene played on all the emotional beats to perfection and the added element of Octavia looking on as her brother fought to save someone he cares about just brought all the feels.
Jennifer: Bellamy Saves Clarke. "The head and the heart" has been a recurring description of Bellamy and Clarke's dynamic since season four. In this scene, Bellamy begs Clarke to live, physically keeping her heart beating and breathing air into her lungs until she's able to win the battle in her head. Both Bellamy and Clarke have given up and left each other for dead in the past, and Clarke decided to let Josephine keep her body when she thought Bellamy had given up on her. Here, they finally fight for each other and accept that they are vital to one another. Bob Morley and Eliza Taylor display their characters' raw emotions beautifully, while Marie Avgeropoulos gets the opportunity to show off Octavia's reinstated squishier feelings as she witnesses her brother's desperation and then joy.
Laura B: Woah, did Noah Hawley direct this week's episode or what? This week's episode almost felt like an episode of Legion, being filmed in abstract and surreal way, as we watch June break down towards brain atrophy. I loved it, but where it found its emotional ground was when the doctor came in to stitch June's hand after the incident with attacking Serena with a scalpel! The conversation they have was cordial, as the doctor learns that he knew June's mother and that he still treats her kindly despite having different ethical views. It was a trippy episode that blurred the lines on what acceptable is, while potentially setting up some scary loose ends that may come back to bite June later.
Claire: I am disappointed in the direction that has been taken with season 3, but this scene where we see a deeply distraught and possibly suicidal June being treated with care and kindness was a nice respite. Also to have a connection through this doctor to her mother, who is assumed dead, was beautiful.
Jane the Virgin “Chapter Nintey-Seven” was written by the team of Deidre Shaw and Chantelle M Wells and was directed by Melanie Mayron. Jane’s (Gina Rodriguez) new Agent, Lily Lofton (Emmy Raver-Lampman) has some notes on Jane’s novel that send Jane into a bit of a tailspin. This episode, however, firmly belongs to Ivonne Coll – and Alba! It also looks like Rogelio’s (Jaime Camil) good deed is not going to go unpunished – as the saying goes…

The episode begins with our usual flashback that emphasizes that the one thing Jane never loved about telenovelas was the scary stuff. Cut to now and Lily Lofton tells Jane that her novel lacks a tension in the climax and needs an explosive ending. Lily offers to brainstorm with Jane and plants the idea that Rose (Bridget Regan) might have swapped Mateo (Elias Janssen) for another baby when she kidnapped him, sending Jane into a spiral of doubt. Eventually, even Rafael (Justin Baldoni) is sucked in because Rose is capable of anything – although Rafael does manage to pull back enough to realize that Rose never does anything for no reason. All is well by the end of the episode, when the two actually do a DNA test and we learn that they are Mateo’s parents!

Jane continues to agonize over how to create more tension in her novel, but she eventually saved again by what’s happening around her… But first, while Xo (Andrea Navedo) is trying to teach Jane and Rafael their wedding dance, Rafael brings up Pablo, and Alba is suddenly made aware that her entire life, including what happened in Venezuela and losing her virginity before marriage, is in Jane’s novel! She forbids Jane from using any of it – and tells her to take it all out of the novel!

Jane is then forced to essentially re-write the entire novel, but Xo keeps assuring her that she’ll get Alba to really read the novel and change her mind. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work. In a truly telenovela shocking twist, however, it’s Jorge (Alfonso DiLuca) who finally gets Alba to change her mind! I loved this scene between Jorge and Jane. Jorge is in his lazyboy, watching his football, and Jane comes in to thank him, but in true Villanueva fashion, she is dying of curiosity to know how he did it.

He clearly wants to keep watching the game, but he sweetly answers Jane – and the answer is wonderful. Once again, the show is able to illustrate a real world issue that is so devastating for so many. The show is able to put a human face on an issue that has so many people vilified right now. He tells Jane that living as an undocumented makes you view the world differently. You get used to living in fear and hiding your true self to protect yourself. Jorge knows better than anyone else in Alba’s life what this is like. He tells Jane that he told Alba that he understands, but they need to trust now. I adored that he told Jane that he and Alba were working to bring down their WALLS together.

Petra (Yael Grobglas) is excited about a meeting with Clarissa James (Olivia d’Abo) who she wants to create a franchise of the Mirabella with. I loved her telling Rafael that he couldn’t wear any cologne to the meeting! LOL! Good call Petra! I hate that too!

When Clarissa turns up, she has her guru in tow without whom she never makes any decision – and “Maggie” turns out to be none other than Magda (Priscilla Barnes)! Naturally, Magda tries again to shake down Petra for half of the Mirabella – or an outrageous amount of money. Petra does her best to side track Magda and keep her out of the negotiations with Clarissa, but locking her in a closet and putting a security guard (Freddy John James) on her! Petra is saved from a totally unexpected source too!

When Alba sees Magda, she is furious to see her back at the Mirabella. Her new resolution not to hide behind a wall has created a whole new Alba – and it was great watching Ivonne Coll really let Alba grow in this episode! She confronts Magda and manages to get a confession taped on her phone – and watching Alba struggle with her new smart phone for the whole episode was hilarious and created some unexpected tension as she then almost deleted the tape! I loved her telling Magda, “I’m an American now, bitch!” Taking away Magda’s only leverage. Alba tells Magda to leave town and never come back or she’ll go to the police – and Petra gets off with giving her mother $500 a month. In the end, we also see that Petra manages not to let Magda get in her head, so she has also really grown – and she got the deal for the franchise!

Jane is still working on how to find a way for her crime to climax, when Alba brings her an iced coffee. She tells Alba that she’s even prayed to find an answer. Alba tells her that she’s been praying for years to forgive Magda, but in the end, confronting her is what did the trick – and suddenly, this also answers Jane’s prayer! She realizes that she doesn’t need to build up the crime, she needs to build up the heroine! I love how it becomes the story of Alba.

Meanwhile, however, this has also planted the seed in Jane that she wants to confront Rose once and for all. No one thinks it’s a great idea, but Rafael goes with her for support. Before they get there, however, Rose has put her escape plan into motion. She stabs herself in the leg to get sent to the hospital and has the ambulance hit by a van full of her crew wearing Rose masks. In the confusion, she gets away.

Dennis (Christopher Allen) shows up at the prison to tell Jane and Rafael what’s happened – and he also tells them that Luisa (Yara Martinez) has been helping them all along. Unfortunately, when the police show up with Luisa to grab Rose, she uses Bobby (Tommy Dorfman) as a human shield, getting him killed, but getting away. Rose is on the loose again! Will she be able to forgive Luisa for this or will she finally be over her obsession with her and ready to kill her too!!???

Finally, Rogelio’s dream is once again in danger because River (Brooke Shields) wants to pull out of the project even though This is Mars has finally been picked up to series. She tells Rogelio it’s all because he convinced her that family was more important. PJ (Eden Sher) continues to hate River for missing her entire childhood. I loved that if you were paying attention, the dreadful situation on the border in America comes back really subtly in this storyline too. River tells Rogelio that it’s because of him that she’s let her walls down and tried to bring her family back together. Rogelio first suggests that the build her wall back up – it’s an emotional wall here, but it’s a wonderful metaphor for the wall that could separate so many families – and the families that have been brutally separated already.

On a lighter note, however, Xo tells Rogelio to be the daughter-whisperer that he is, so he tries to get through to PJ. He does learn that her deep-seated resentment really stems from a particular moment when she was young and had her girlfriends over to watch her mother win an Emmy. In a particularly hard to watch, self-centered acceptance speech – complete with two fake outs – River never once thanks or acknowledges PJ! How devastating for a child – and how embarrassing in front of your peers!

In classic Rogelio style, he recreates the entire moment, building an Emmy set and PJ’s childhood bedroom (from that exact moment!) on set. He even has her three friends flown in from New York! PJ is utterly skeptical at first, but once River sincerely thanks PJ in her new acceptance speech, she is finally won over! The two finally make up. It’s crazy – according to PJ – but it’s also sweet.

As the episode ends, Xo has discovered that she was nervous about nursing school for no reason and loves it. And it’s then that River calls Rogelio to thank him – and then break the news that she’s moving the show to New York to film. She has control over the show – and it’s stated in her contract that she can move it anywhere to film (fyi? Highly unlikely that she’d have that kind of power – a much too expensive concession for a network or studio! But, hey, it’s a telenovela, right?). She tells Rogelio that she’d hate to have to re-cast him, so the choice is clear. Rogelio has to move or give up his dream!!!!

In true telenovela style, we have all kinds of new twists to worry about as we move into the final (SOB!) episodes! It looks like Alba's story is almost completely wrapped up - did you love it? Will Rogelio have to abandon both his daughters or commute to New York? Will Xo have to give up nursing school? What will Rose do? Is Jane in danger? What did you think of the episode? Let me know your thoughts and predictions in the comments below!

Wow! What a start to the contest! About halfway through round 1A, it looked to be a bloodbath with only 2 of the higher ranked characters in the lead. While 4 ended up winning, it came at the cost of many people's brackets. (Congrats to Tale, who leads the prediction contest with 9 correct choices. The leader board can be found underneath the polls.) For the first time ever, the last seeded character (Lorelai Gilmore) beat the first seeded character (Eleven). Previously, the lowest a first seeded character has gotten was 5th place. We also saw the fall of 2 iconic superheroes - Buffy and Supergirl. It is the first time Buffy has ever left the Cup in the first round. Previously, she has ranked no lower than 9th in the overall contest. With no clear lead out character in the nomination stage, it looks like this year will be anyone's game. Let the surprises continue!

To ensure that everybody has a good time, please read the rules below. It is important that everyone be kind and fair to make this the most fun for everyone. There are also links below to the list of character ranking and official bracket. Once round 1 is over, these will contain stats about the contest as well. The daily TV Talk Topic will be found above the polls each time. We have a new TV Talk Topic every day and all are encouraged to participate. It's my favorite part of the contest.

For those of you with underdog characters, get the word out now because the round 1 is where the biggest change can happen. Generally there are fewer votes in round 1, so it is far easier for an upset. Good luck to all and happy voting!

2019 Character Cup Rules:

1. Don't take it too seriously! Have fun. Discuss. Play nice. Don't cheat (only one vote per person per poll please).

2. Focus on characters, not people. Talking about what you like and dislike about a character is encouraged. Going after actors or fans is not.

3. The aliens have not landed. There's no conspiracy here. I will do my very best to keep the contest running smoothly, but I do make mistakes. I apologize in advance for any technical difficulties, spelling errors, and general absentmindedness. Let me know and I'll fix it.

4. Comments are life. As you anxiously await the return of your shows, why not distract yourself with a little TV Talk? Each day is a new topic so even if your favorites are out, you can still discuss. While this contest is just a silly piece of internet fluff, the conversation here dives deep, so jump on in.

5. Nuts and Bolts - All polls are active for about 24 hours. The winners advance to the next round. In the case of a tie, both characters go to the next round. New polls should go up every day and polls may sometimes overlap each other. Any questions? Ask away in the comments.

TV Talk Topic:

TV Talk Topic: When Movie Stars Move In

Years ago, TV was seen as the ugly stepsister of the acting world. Broadway and movies were the only place to get respect. Now, with the inclusion of streaming networks, TV is suddenly for cool kids and even commercials have their big time celebrity endorsements. How do you think the inclusion of so many "movie" actors has affected TV shows? Are high budget actors a good thing for TV as a whole or just a passing fad to get streaming networks more subscribers? Which shows that star these kind of movie actors would you recommend most? Are there any movie stars that you would like to see on TV? What shows would benefit from them? (Thanks to Lisa Breton for the topic idea.)

Jane the Virgin “Chapter Ninety-Six” was written by Ben O’Hara and was directed by Viet Nguyen, whose other credits include iZombie, Lucifer, and Dynasty. This is O’Hara’s first writing credit, but he’s been a writer’s assistant on the show for 58 episodes. Once again, this episode feels like we are moving toward a place where things may wrap up – but does that happen with a telenovela? Things are also heating up as we move toward the end of the season – and – SOB! – series. Rose’s (Bridget Regan) plan is put in motion just as it seems that Jane’s (Gina Rodriguez) life is finally on track. And a shout out to Jaime Camil (Rogelio), who is always a joy to watch and really puts the meta in meta!

The episode opens with the Narrator (Anthony Mendez) doing one of the things the show loves to do – tease us by telling us that at 30 years and six months, Jane’s life would change forever – and then jumping back in time! Happily, we quickly learn that Petra (Yael Grobglas) and Magda (Priscilla Barnes) survived the crash – but Magda is hurt worse and eventually has to lose her leg. Petra confides in Jane that her first thought after the accident was for the twins (Mia and Ella Allan), but she realized they’d be fine because they’d have Jane as a Stepmom – and that was one of the major threads in the episode.

Jane is rearranging the house to make everything equal for the twins – much to Rafael’s (Justin Baldoni) delight when Jane is suddenly overwhelmingly inspired to finish her novel – to the exclusion of everything else for the next three weeks – including the episode title! Finally, it’s Jane the <strike>Virgin</strike> Stepmother Who Just Finished Her Novel!

Rafael loves it and so does Marlene (Melanie Mayron), but Marlene’s lover, the Agent, passes on it. Jane then sends it out to every Agent she can, but she’s soon convinced that the manuscript isn’t even getting past the assistants – and she would know because she used to be one!

Meanwhile, Petra asks Jane to help with the twins. She has a long list of rules for them that the therapist has suggested to give them boundaries and help them to feel safe. Petra is determined to make them stop lying. Jane – who loves a list – is on it. Unfortunately, it doesn’t go quite as smoothly as she’d like and the twins lie to her to get time on their iPads. Jane reaches out to Petra for guidance but tells her not to tell them – which Petra does.

The next time Jane comes to get the twins, they call her “lame Jane” among other names and then run away, make faces at her, and knock over a woman’s (Julia Parker) luggage. The woman assumes Jane is the nanny and tells her to take control of her kids. Jane if rightly furious and tells the woman not to assume she’s the nanny because she’s Latino! The girls back her up – after a fashion – they say she’s not the nanny – she’s the Evil Stepmother!

Meanwhile, Rogelio and River (Brooke Shields) nervously observe testing being done on their Pilot. The executives (Dale Waddington and Rueben Grundy) are happy with the results and just need a few tweaks before sending the pilot to the networks. Rogelio, however, thinks that it’s a disaster! The scores were great for the young leads and he’s sure that he and River will be turned into side characters! The two decide to reedit the screener before it goes to the networks.

They are going to have to pull an all nighter, so Rogelio calls Darci (Justina Machado) to cover his turn with Baby. She agrees but tells him that he’s going to owe her. Rogelio and River are finally satisfied but when they go to send the cut, they discover that River’s assistant PJ (Eden Sher) has already sent off the first one! The two come up with an elaborate plot – which is hilarious – to get the right tape to the secret retreat.

Xo (Andrea Navedo) tries to get Rogelio to give Jane a pep talk when she’s ready to give up on her dream. At first, he’s consumed that his own career is over, but quickly pulls himself together for Jane. He tells her an elaborate story about how he got the scar on his arm. I loved this sequence as Camil is fabulous in it. It turns out that he got his big break because he was stalking a famous director – who then banned him for life – but it got him enough notoriety to get his first job – on The Passions of Santos. But I loved Jane continuing to break in at points and say “and that’s when you got the scar” – and Rogelio’s “no!”

The two then devise a plot for Jane to break into an Agent’s office and get her manuscript on the pile of weekend reading for the Agent. She’ll go in as a delivery person. And again, Rogelio has charts and diagrams! At the last minute, Rafael calls, and Jane has to take the twins – and bail on the plan.

Similarly, when Rogelio is about to head out on his hilarious plot, Darci shows up at his door with Baby to collect on his debt. She makes him take Baby – and reminds him that these are the moments that you don’t get back – when the baby is young. It’s exactly why he wanted to have a baby in the first place because he missed those moments with Jane.

In the end, the twins want to help Jane carry out her plan. When the security guard (Josh Latzer) questions who they are, the twins say they are the daughter of one of the executive, and Jane claims to be their nanny! She explains to them that in this context it’s ok because she is using the guard’s bias against him so that it’s subversive. In the end the plan works, and the three are excited – so cute! But Jane then explains that lying is always bad and wrong – and she punishes herself.

Jane decides that this is her last chance. If the Agent doesn’t pick up the book, she has to be realistic and just find another career. Writing will just be a hobby. The Agent calls the next morning and passes. Jane is devastated but determined to move on. And then, Mateo (Elias Janssen) suddenly pipes up and says that he loves Jane’s book – and starts reading from it!

When River calls to tell Rogelio how the mission went, he ignores her call because he’s watching Baby take her first steps! He’s discovered, finally, that family is more important than his career. Eventually, River does tell him that PJ went in to deliver the cut but never made it. Rogelio tells her that he’s ok with it. He’s decided that he wants to spend more time with his family, so maybe being a supporting character is exactly what he needs at this point in his life. He tells her that he’s happy to be the spice, not the dish. And I loved how meta this is. Camil is truly the spice in Jane the Virgin.

River is not happy! She doesn’t have the same relationship with her daughter that he has with his. Rogelio is shocked to learn that River has a daughter and even more shocked to find out her daughter is PJ – Pond Juniper Fields!!!!! River tells him that PJ hates him – for that name if nothing else! Rogelio promises to help River reconnect with her daughter – it’s his new mission.

Petra is unhappy with Jane that she didn’t tell her about what happened with the twins. Jane finally blows up and says that she isn’t the nanny and she needs to have her own relationship with the twins if they are to feel safe and loved. Really, I thought that Petra also had a point. This is parenting, not high school. A parent does have the right to know what happened – and needs to know in case there are repercussions. The two are interrupted when the hospital calls to tell Petra that Magda has taken a turn for the worse. The doctor tells Petra he needs her wishes to unplug Magda in writing – an emoji of a plug and thumb in a text aren’t enough!

Petra heads to the hospital with Jane. Petra does look sad when she finally takes Magda’s hand, but she tells Jane that she’s sad that she doesn’t feel anything. Her mother was a horrible selfish person who made her life miserable. Jane tells her that it’s ok to cry for herself because Petra deserved better. Petra explains that it’s why she’s so strict with the twins. They lie – like Magda. Jane tells her that they’ll be fine because they have all of them as their family.

They are interrupted when Jane gets a call from a huge Agent who wants to represent her!

Naturally, just as they are about to unplug Magda, she comes out of it! She’s ALIIIIIIIIVVVEEE!!!!!

Meanwhile, Luisa (Yara Martinez) at Bobby (Tommy Dorfman) and Rose’s urging has gone to Rafael to ask him for their father’s tie tac – as a momento of happier times. Rafael tells her no way, and if she wants it, it’s likely for Rose, so he’s taking it straight to the police. Unfortunately, what they really wanted was for Bobby to get the combination to Rafael’s safe so that they could then steal their father’s watch, which also contained his fingerprint! The fingerprint opened the door to a vault full of cash! As the episode ends, we see that the other part of Rose’s plan involved all those other women she’d enlisted – and they are all wearing her face now?!?! What IS she up to!

Great performances this week from Rodriguez and Camil – as well as Mia and Ella Allan who are just terrific as the twins. Jane finally has her novel finished and a big Agent – is her career finally taking off? What will Magda do now – can Petra ever be free of her? And what exactly is Rose up to now? What did you think of the episode? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!
