The latest installation of the <i>Into the Dark</i> series (finally) travels into werewolf territory, but it lacks the usual (albeit small) horror aspects that typically come with an episode of <i>Into the Dark. </i>Instead we get a sort of origin story that doesn’t quite know how to pace itself. <div><br /></div><div>We start out right off the bat with a dead body in a living room, and a woman escaping with her child. Then it’s something like ten years later, and we get to properly meet Esme (Megalyn Echikunwoke - Almost Family) and her son Luna (Yonas Kibreab - The Big Show Show). She’s looking for a house for them, and all she asks about is a basement, which isn’t weird at all. She enters the local bar, gets herself a job, and is immediately accosted by, guess who, the town sheriff! Real shocker. </div><div><br /></div><div>If all of this sounds incredibly mundane, that’s because it is. A lot of this episode, most of it actually, is just Esme and Luna living their lives save for the one full moon a night. It’s… reality at least? </div><div><br /></div><div>The pacing of this episode, as it has been with the last few installments, is incredibly slow. We only see Luna on one full moon, and then all hell breaks loose -- for ten minutes. Luna wants to go to a birthday party and Esme says no because it’s a full moon. Luna decides to go anyway, which, how did he even get there? It seemed like Esme was driving forever and he’s only probably ten, how on Earth did he get there? </div><div><br /></div><div>Anyway… Luna transforms in the car, and when the car crashes, he escapes. Eventually, it’s light out and Esme finds him, and they’re already packing up to move out of fear that he hurt someone. Maybe killed someone. Only, the next morning, there’s a news story about a farm of cows being slaughtered. </div><div><br /></div><div>Then there’s a time jump, yes, the second in this episode, and Esme has told Luna they’ll talk about school, with a pretty promising look on her face. Things only go downhill from here. One day, while Esme is sleeping (like the dead, apparently), Sam (Joshua Dov - Westworld), the manager at the bar she works at, stops by to ask her on a date. He can smell the rotting meat that’s been planted downstairs for the next full moon, and when he goes to see what it is, Esme finally wakes up, hits him on the head and, oops, kills him! </div><div><br /></div><div>Look, I’m not saying he deserved that after she said no several times and he kept trying, but he did literally enter their house without permission, and then enter a space he had no business being, especially when the only one around is a ten year old child. What goes around comes around. </div><div><br /></div><div>Of course, a few days later, the sheriff shows up wanting to question her because the other bartenders know he was heading over there when he disappeared. The cops, because duh, are extremely aggressive with her, and they manage to force their way into her home. They handcuff her, and then find Luna, in his cage, because it’s a full moon. Dun dun DUN!!! </div><div><br /></div><div>They’re both taken to the police station and, as you do, Luna transforms into a werewolf, killing pretty much everyone. Esme gets out of her cuffs with one of the deputies keys (just break your wrists, babe) and Luna corners her. Only, wait, he doesn’t attack her, he lets her pat him! And he just looks like a regular white wolf. Booooo. Where are the Twilight special effects to make it look gigantic and scary?! I wanted to pet it too! </div><div><br /></div><div>The most exciting thing about this episode is, in fact, the very last ten minutes. An underrated scene I think is when Miguel (Marco Rodríguez - Cobra) gives Esme back the ring she pawned to pay him back. There’s something very emotional about people noticing little things about you and then taking action. There’s probably 60+ minutes of boring plot, which, I get the need to build up characters, and it was nice actually caring about the characters for once, but man, was it worth it? </div><div><br /></div><div>I loved the flashbacks with Joseph! I wish we got to see more of his character, but I suppose I understand why we didn’t. I do feel terribly for Esme now, though, since she now must live with the fact that Joseph very well may not have attacked her when he changed. </div><div><br /></div><div>Another weird thing about this episode was that I literally couldn’t tell what year it was. They didn’t seem to have cell phones, and I couldn’t tell what Luna was playing in the beginning, but I also know that some small towns are still kind of using outdated technology. </div><div><br /></div><div>Overall, it wasn’t the best episode of this season, but it definitely wasn’t the worst. Though, Spring Full Moon? I’m just saying, it would’ve been a lot more fun if they spun Women’s History Month and gave us a messed-up revenge-fantasy. There was also Employee Appreciation Day, and the start of Daylight Savings, which I’m sure they could’ve turned into a multi-universe time-bend situation. I know Into the Dark isn’t out here trying to make super impactful, makes-you-think work, but maybe if they get a season three, we can do some out of the box holidays and/or ideas. </div><div><br /></div><div>What did you think of Blood Moon? Do you think Into the Dark should get a season three? What stories do you think they’ll cover if we get a season three? Let me know in the comments below!<script type='text/javascript'>var authorcode='LG';</script>

Here’s why I didn't love it. <div><br /></div><div>When the episode begins, we’re introduced to Tara (Dana Drori - <i>Straight Up</i>), squatting in open houses and living out of her car. She soon meets Sam (Casey Deidrick -<i> In the Dark</i>) and they begin a whirlwind romance that includes moving in together after knowing each other for, I would guesstimate a few weeks? When things go awry, like Tara becoming more irritable and not telling him who’s on a phone call, Tara confesses that she had a stalker and he must have found her. </div><div><br /></div><div>Sam decides to propose to Tara, and of course, she says yes, because this <i>is </i>the Valentine’s Day episode after all, and things get… worse from here. Soon, Sam’s earaches become unbearable, Tara begins acting shady, and Sam has a chance to meet Tara’s stalker — her ex-husband. </div><div><br /></div><div>Once Tara, you know, kills her ex-husband (Evan Williams - <i>Versailles</i>) after he shows up at her house, Sam helps her hide the body and visits the location where Tara and an old friend used to be seen around a lot. There, he finds a corpse in the wall, making it just your average hideaway shack, Tara shapeshifts into Sam and sleeps with (see: assaults) his best friend/business partner, and Tara makes her big reveal: a giant tentacle lives inside of her stomach! That’s what the scar is! </div><div><br /></div><div>The episode concludes with Tara draining Sam and shapeshifting into him permanently, a fantastic shot of Sam’s ear falling off, and a man who <i>also </i>has a tentacle in his stomach finding Tara and introducing himself. Now that we’re all caught up, let’s get into the pros and cons of this episode. </div><div><br /></div><div><b>Pro:</b> the story itself. While it’s not the most original story, I thought the writers did a good job of setting it out from others by adding in the sexual aspect, and by allowing the female character to shapeshift. It was interesting to see how, in order to completely take over Sam, she worked on even mundane tasks such as a doctor’s appointment to get Sam just perfect for taking over. </div><div><br /></div><div><b>Con:</b> the pacing. We don’t even see a tentacle until the last act, and when we do, it’s lacking. The CGI could be better, and by the time we even get to this scene, you’re just waiting for the episode to end rather than being excited for the reveal. The insane build-up to a very weak reveal was disappointing, to say the least. </div><div><br /></div><div><b>Pro:</b> the ending. While, again, the build-up to this could’ve been better, the ending left the episode open to a possible sequel of sorts — sort of like they did with Pooka! in the sense that it’s a new story branching from something else. </div><div><br /></div><div><b>Con:</b> I had nobody to root for. Almost all of the characters, save for Esther (Kasey Elise - <i>The Dispute</i>), were different forms of dumb horror-movie cliche, annoying, or doomed to die anyway. I know that tropes and cliches are tropes and cliches for a reason, but did we have to include so many ridiculous moments that made me dislike their characters? </div><div><br /></div><div>For example, after Tara tells Sam that she had a stalker and he must have found her when Sam is out one day, Tara hears knocking at her door and opens it. She doesn’t ask who it is, she doesn’t look out a window or call through the door, she straight up opens it. When she has a stalker out there. Obviously, we learn later that this is probably because she can take whoever was at the door using her tentacle, but when you don’t know that, she appears a bit dumb. </div><div><br /></div><div>Then there’s Sam. Not only was he strangely aggressive in “wanting to get to know Tara better” but he also does something just as dumb as Tara did with the door. When Tara is searching for him in Esther’s apartment, he runs somewhere and <i>slams the door shut behind him.</i> Dude. You’re being followed! Why aren’t you trying to be absolutely silent? </div><div><br /></div><div>Overall, I think the premise itself was fun, but the delivery wasn’t great, and I was bored fairly quickly. Both literally and figuratively, Into the Dark’s ‘Tentacles’ is too quiet to make the impact the show so desperately needs.</div><script type="text/javascript">var authorcode='LG';</script>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29964715.post-42114090945448901312021-02-12T10:00:00.002+00:002021-02-12T10:00:03.112+00:00POLL : What are you watching Tonight? - 12th February 2021<a name='more'></a><img class='headerimage' width='726px' src='https://files.spoilertv.com/headers/header-waywt-white-sharp.jpg' /><br>

<br />DarkUFOhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08464721245509617190noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29964715.post-714031153052799782020-08-01T18:30:00.000+01:002020-08-01T18:30:01.054+01:00Into the Dark - The Current Occupant - Review<a name='more'></a><img class="headerimage" src="https://files.spoilertv.com/headers/into-the-dark.jpg" width="726px" />The most recent installation of Into the Dark allows us a glimpse into a man’s harrowing journey throughout his time at a psych hospital, in which he thinks he is the President of the United States being held there against his will. Where the episode lacks in actual scares, it almost makes up for in gore, and it asks the eerie question: is it more likely that the President of the United States would wake up as a patient in a psychiatric hospital, or that a patient in the psychiatric hospital would wake up as the President of the United States?<br />
<br />
One of the best things about the episode is the cast of characters. We have Barry Watson (7th Heaven) as Henry Cameron, our suspected POTUS, Sonita Henry (Krypton) as Dr. Larson, Henry’s doctor, and Lilli Birdsell (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) as Helen, suspected Secretary of State. We also have to talk about Marvin ‘Krondon’ Jones III (Black Lightning) playing Henry’s trusty, terrifying orderly, and Kate Cobb (Shameless), our necessary FLOTUS, Eliza.<br />
<br />
We eventually learn that Eliza is necessary because, shocker, Henry isn’t <i>actually </i>the president! He just had a psychotic break because while attending an event for the actual president, there was an assassination attempt that didn’t even come close to hitting the president, and instead hit Eliza, and she died in Henry’s arms. Tragic? Yes. Predictable? Slightly. I was a little off-put at realizing he wasn’t actually the president, because, come on, how much fun would that have been? Happy Fourth, the country is quite literally in flames in the outside world, let’s throw some TV chaos in there too!
<br />
<br />
But, alas, it was too… good seems like the wrong word here, so perhaps too <i>easy </i>to be true. We get a kind of fun fake-out, where Henry steals a paper clip from his file, and later, unlocks his handcuffs, takes Dr. Larson hostage, and rides up to the elevator to the ethereal White House ground floor. He steps into the Oval Office, his seat is relinquished back to him, and he records a speech about coming together. He discusses his rocky journey, and during it, uh oh, the lights dim, he’s falling in and out of reality, and uh, yeah, that’s not really happening. He’s imagining it. He’s still in the elevator. His orderly has come to retrieve him on the top floor. His masterful Make-Laura-Miss-Timeless paperclip trick didn’t help him much after all. Too bad.<br />
<br />
Another thing I liked about this episode is that, though I feel that I must once again remind Into the Dark that it is a horror anthology, and I came here to be scared, terrified, petrified, and not just spooked and weirded out, I appreciated the gore in this episode. There’s not too much, but when it’s there, it sure makes a statement, like the consistent flashbacks to the shots of Eliza and Henry bleeding out after they’ve been shot by who we find out later is someone not even originally aiming for them, which almost makes it worse. They’re a nobody, a name in the wind, a ghost.<br />
<br />
My <i>very </i>favorite thing about this episode, though, is that it makes me think, almost immediately, of old episodes of The X-Files. The way the beginning of it is edited together, the music, it made me very nostalgic for some good old Mulder and Scully banter. Too bad all we got instead was some hardcore electric shock trials. Also, a weird amount of torture. Too much, if you ask me. Guys, I wanted jump scares and nightmares, I didn’t want to watch Matt Camden from 7th Heaven lick a man’s work boots.<br />
<br />
Overall, the episode itself was okay, but I still fear that Into the Dark itself is coming apart at the seams. The acting was amazing all around, but the story was a tad lackluster, almost something that’s been done before, and the editing on the film made me look at my phone more times than I can count. I understand what they were trying to do, putting us in Henry’s shoes, but, perhaps I wanted to be in Dr. Larson’s shoes for once.<br />
<br />
My favorite scene from this episode of Into the Dark is when Henry is being disciplined after his altercation with another patient in the hospital, and he seems to have knocked some teeth out of the other patient’s mouth. Henry, clearly still riled up, all of a sudden, laughs and swallows the teeth. Thank you! <i>This </i>is the chills down my spine I was asking for. <i>This </i>is the scrunch up my face and stare at the screen in horror I was looking for. Henry swallowing a pill cup full of teeth is <i>exactly </i>what I wanted.<br />
<br />
My favorite quote from the episode is one that’s used multiple times, that I used at the beginning of this review, but I can’t get over how much of an emphasis is put on it in the show, especially given Henry’s response. It’s during one of many of Dr. Larson and Henry’s therapy sessions:<br />
<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
Dr. Larson: “Do you believe it more likely that the President of the United States would wake up as a patient in the psychiatric hospital, or a patient in the psychiatric hospital would wake up as the President of the United States?”<br />
Henry: “In a rational world, neither scenario is likely to occur.” </blockquote>
<br />
What did you guys think of the episode? What were your favorite or least favorite scenes? Do you think it went well with this month’s theme?

Into the Dark: The Current Occupant: New Episode Premiere (Hulu Original)<br />
<br />
Trapped in a mysterious psychiatric ward, a man with no memory comes to believe that he's the President of the United States and the subject of a diabolical political conspiracy. As the asylum's soul-crushing forces bear down on him, he fights to preserve his sanity and escape so that he can return to power.<br />

As this episode will prove, though, nothing quite says “yes, Karen, I’m a 30-something woman with no husband and no kids,” like a murderous demon dog, jumpscares, and gore. I <i>loved </i>it.<br />
<br />
Meet our surprisingly delightful cast: Judy Greer (13 Going on 30) as Maggie, our perpetually single struggling journalist who gets an emotional support dog after Steve Guttenberg’s (Three Men and a Baby) Don, her boss, suggests it. Then we have McKinley Freeman (Hit the Floor) as Nate, Maggie’s new boyfriend, and police officer investigating the hit and run of… Nick, played by Travis Schuldt (The Boy Next Door). He also inevitably ends up looking into the death of Bea, played by Maria Conchita Alonso (The Running Man). Finally, we have the overall irrelevant but necessary best friend character, Annie, played by Ellen Wong (GLOW).<br />
<br />
This episode was so much fun, honestly. It’s no Oscar Nominee, but I don’t think even the writers went into it trying to make it Oscar-worthy, which is what makes it even better. They recognize that it’s meant to be a casual, great, maybe Emmy award-worthy movie if the Emmys would just open a dang horror movie category already.<br />
<br />
One of the funniest things about this episode -- and, yes, there are some actually hilarious things about this episode -- is that when Reuben the dog kills Bea, his first victim besides Nick (which I think Maggie suspected, but didn’t quite want to believe), Maggie, with almost no hesitation, just goes, “well, alright, this is my life now, cleaning bodies and burying them.”<br />
<br />
I mean, sure, she calls the cops, technically, but as soon as she sees the poop, a dead giveaway that guarantees Reuben did this, she hangs up and decides to dispose of the body in the desert herself. There’s no afterthought, she’s just like, alright! My dog killed someone! I guess I’ve gotta clean this up!<br />
<br />
Uh, HUH? I guess when you’re in a situation like this there’s really no one to call, but my goodness, girl, are you good? Are you taking your vitamins? Splashing water on your face? You don’t seem good. I want you to take a nap today. Also, here’s a TV pet peeve of mine that drives me crazy: most 9-1-1 dispatch centers in the USA are required to do callbacks when they receive a hangup phone call.<br />
<br />
If a 9-1-1 dispatcher receives a phone call that becomes a hangup, they are required to call back, and if they believe or can verify that it is a true emergency, or if they have an address associated with the number that’s calling them, the dispatcher will then send the closest police officer to that location to verify that there isn’t a true emergency. This almost never happens on TV. Ever.<br />
<br />
If an officer had just shown up while Maggie was disposing of Bea’s body, or trying to, maybe Annie and Nate would still be alive. Annie, at least, definitely would be. Poor Annie. Watching her die made me the saddest for two reasons: 1) she totally didn’t deserve it at all, even a little bit; and 2) I felt guilty for having fun watching her die because the gore is <i>awesome</i>. It’s a good time.<br />
<br />
That’s another thing I absolutely love about this episode. This <i>felt </i>like an episode of Into the Dark. It didn’t feel like a toss-away movie some of the recent Into the Dark episodes have felt like, episodes Hulu just puts up because they had to -- no, this felt like a real, put together, actual episode of Into the Dark.<br />
<br />
It contained all the elements I needed from a Blumhouse “horror” movie, which was really just a glorified slasher if we’re being completely honest with ourselves, and it was definitely one of the best episodes of the season. I especially loved the way jumpscares were incorporated into the episode. At one point, days after the Bea debacle, Maggie stands, answering her phone, and looks into a mirror. Staring back at her, for a split second, is Bea’s face, contorted and decaying, making Maggie -- and admittedly, myself -- jump.<br />
<br />
Then, days after Reuben kills Maggie’s boss Don and Maggie disposes of his body off of the roof he so affectionately mentioned jumping off in the beginning of the episode, Maggie is sitting at his desk, having taken over his job. She turns to look out the window, holding her coffee, and she’s faced with an image of Don falling past the window, soundlessly, just the image of the horror in front of her eyes, a horror of her own doing.<br />
<br />
This also made me jump, which made me smile, which made me love the episode even more. Real, actual, make-you-jump jumpscares are hard to come by now, as they’ve become so predictable. The dark hallway, the scary music, the tight shot, and then… no music, a larger shot, a character realizing they’re not alone… Nothing. A character jump -- not my own. Something the audience saw coming and can prepare for. This, though? I didn’t see it coming.<br />
<br />
I’m not sure what it was that made me let down my horror movie defenses and forget that underneath Judy Greer’s softness, underneath her matching dinosaur pajamas with her fictional dog, I was still watching a horror movie anthology. Nevertheless, there I was, completely unsuspecting, heart beating a mile a minute after seeing Bea’s face encapsulate the mirror.<br />
<br />
My favorite quote from this episode was at the very beginning of the episode, between Don and Evan (Aaron Eisenberg, also one of the writers of this episode), after finding out that the newspaper they work at is going completely digital:<br />
<br />
Don: “Two words: Flexible and adjust. You’re calm. Everybody’s calm. You’ve got to be flexible. You’ve got to adjust. [...] There’s a third word. Do you know what that word is?”<br />
Evan: “Severance?”<br />
<br />
I also want to mention my least favorite scene from this even though I immensely enjoyed it:<br />
<br />
There’s a scene towards the end where Judy Greer is holding Reuben, cradling him like a baby in a strange fantasy she’s been having all episode, about an actual baby. It made me feel so disturbed and I hated all of it.<br />
<br />
To counter the dislike, I will say something else I saw that I loved: the callbacks to old Into the Dark episodes! At one point, Maggie is wearing Pooka! Pajamas, and later, Reuben is playing with a Pooka! Stuffed dog toy. It was very cute, and a really sweet shoutout for anyone who, like me, has sat through and binged through this whole series in one go. Now I kind of want a Pooka! Stuffed toy for my cat for no good reason.<br />
<br />
What did you guys think of the episode? Where does it rank with the rest of the season? Who was your favorite character? Why’d they introduce Ellen Wong’s character in a crop top rainbow shirt with tinted sunglasses on and then expect us to believe she was completely straight? Ah, Mother’s Day. A time for breakfast in bed, flowers, awkward once-a-year brunches, and apparently murder. While this month’s installment of Into the Dark delivers (ha) a been-there-done-that plot, I still enjoyed watching it immensely because the stars of the episode brought what would’ve been a normal C grade episode to a high A for me. Read on to see my thoughts on all of it!
<br />
<br />
So, yeah, I have to admit right off the bat, a lot of this was pretty predictable. Riley (Micah Joe Parker - The Vampire Diaries) being the real dad? Totally called it. Jenny (Tina Majorino - Veronica Mars) kidnapping her and then pulling a Private Practice by trying to steal her baby? Called that. That poor, sweet cat being brutally murdered? I, unfortunately, called that.<br />
<br />
However, there are things I didn’t see coming, and maybe other people did, but I was excited that some things still shocked me! I didn’t expect Jenny to not be pregnant. Which, thinking about it now, I really should’ve expected that, but, oh well. I also didn’t expect Jenny’s backstory to be so sad. I <i>realllly </i>didn’t expect Riley to be killed so instantly and so brutally. I thought Jenny had left! We all thought she had left! Where did she come from?!<br />
<br />
What I really really didn’t expect was how beautifully Natalie Paul (The Sinner) played this role. She was hard, she was soft, she was smart, she was badass. She played the role of Val to a T and I was rooting for her every step of the way. When she escaped the first time, only to get pulled back in, I was absolutely devastated for her. Then when she actually did escape, I was so overjoyed for her. I felt very connected to this character in a way I’ve never felt to any other Into the Dark character before.<br />
<br />
I also really liked the directing and editing in this episode. Even during fights or high action scenes, which is when the directing usually fumbles for me, the shots were far enough away that I always knew what was happening, but I was still immersed in the fight. My favorite shot in the entire episode was when Val and Jenny were going at each other in their cars and the camera showed them from above. It was a split second scene but I really loved it.<br />
<br />
I have two favorite scenes in this episode. One of them is the scene where Val is giving her unborn child its name. It’s the dead of night and she’s making a plan to possibly sacrifice herself and though Jenny has already chosen a name for Val’s unborn child if the child were to become hers, Val is giving her child her own name because this baby is really hers and she wants her child to know this.
<br />
<br />
My second favorite scene is right after Jenny tries to cut the baby out of Val and decides she isn’t able to do it. Jenny shows up in Val’s room and hands her a cup of tea and when Val asks her what it is she explains that it’s raspberry leaf tea and it’s supposed to help induce labor naturally. Then, Jenny looks right in Val’s eyes and she says “drink it all, or I swear to God, I will cut you open and take my chances.” The way Jenny flips from sweet to threatening, from “I’m being helpful!” to “I will kill you!” is what makes this episode, and Tina and Natalie’s chemistry together so explosive and worth watching.<br />
<br />
I’m gonna give a special shoutout to the scene where the cat is licking itself over soft music while Jenny is giving Val the injection that will incapacitate her so she can tie her to the bed with chains. 10/10, would watch again. RIP to Sollie. You were a good one. We’ll miss you.<br />
<br />
Overall, I did really enjoy this episode. It dragged a little bit a few times, and as I said, the plot was a bit worn out, but Natalie and Tina together were unbelievable and at this point, honestly, I would watch them in anything together. I was surprised to see people really dislike this episode because I really enjoyed it more than some others.<br />
<br />
What did you think of the episode? Whose performance was your favorite? What scene was your favorite? Are you excited about next month’s installment doing Pet Appreciation Week instead of Father’s Day? Let me know in the comments below!<script type='text/javascript'>var authorcode='LG';</script>

Unfortunately, this month’s installment does not deliver that for me. It does, however, deliver Rachel Bloom committing murder so, you win some you lose some.<br />
<br />
With this episode, it feels like they tried to pack in way too much in a small amount of time. Which is ironic, because it’s movie length, so it’s not even the usual 42-minute length that a normal TV episode is. They had their token gay character, a cringy overactive social media star, and they even had a small subplot of marital problems.<br />
<br />
Let’s meet our cast of characters: Derrick (Malcolm Barrett - Timeless) is a writer returning to his hometown after something (something that takes way too long to reveal itself) happens that essentially runs him out of his successful old job. He’s staying with old friends Molly (Felecia Day - The Guild) and Matt (Jonah Ray - Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Return) who can never seem to actually get along and have a daughter that at no point becomes relevant to the plot.<br />
<br />
Then we have Bennie (Gavin Stenhouse - Allegiance) the local silly, dumb cop who has wonderful chemistry with Derrick, and yet nothing comes of it because… Susan exists. Susan (Lyndie Greenwood - Sleepy Hollow) is Derrick’s old flame who he tries to rekindle things with because nothing says “let’s get back together” like a 15-year separation and an attraction of convenience.<br />
<br />
There’s also Ellie (Rachel Bloom - Crazy Ex-Girlfriend) and David (Wil Wheaton - Star Trek: The Next Generation) who are there, and then they’re not. Ellie is the original creator of Pooka, unhappy about the company trying to change Pooka, and David is her husband, unhappy about pictures being released of Ellie being dragged out of her work by security. Naturally, Ellie responds to his anger by lighting both of them on fire.<br />
<br />
The plot of this episode is insane because it actually seems like it came straight from a Reddit board. Like the writers got together, put up 50 pages of random words, and threw darts. First dart: Internet challenge. Second dart: Ash. Third dart: Tulpa. Thus creates: Pooka Lives!<br />
<br />
The major problem with this episode is that while it seems like so much happened, I’m struggling to write this because actually, not much at all happened. Derrick was run out of his town. He got angry and created an internet challenge. The internet challenge blew up. Then, it gets weird, because apparently, they have to save the world? And then they don’t even do that. It literally ends with them not saving the world. Huh?<br />
<br />
I will say, though, they did shock me by using a tulpa storyline. I’ve heard of tulpa’s before, but from what I know, they’re not incredibly popular, so to see it on a show like this made me genuinely surprised. A tulpa is defined as “a concept of a being or an object which is created through spiritual or mental powers.” So they’re saying that the internet spread this challenge so much, they created artwork and wrote stories so realistic that the power of the internet made it into a physical reality.<br />
<br />
Oh, and by the way, relating to the challenge that created the tulpa, anyone who willingly eats ash for an internet challenge probably isn’t surviving the end of the world anyway. Survival of the fittest, y’all.<br />
<br />
I do have to throw it out there, with the script as weak as it was, and the directing definitely not my favorite, the cast is really what made this still enjoyable. They all had pretty good chemistry together as a whole, and they bounced off of each other fairly well, which was nice to see since sometimes with anthology casts they don’t fit as well.<br />
<br />
I will say, one thing I really liked about this episode was the things in the background that pieced it together. More than once we saw instances where there were Pookas in the background, whether a poster, or a doll, or a light, where we watched Pooka’s eyes go from blue to red. It was subtle but still noticeable, and I thought it was a great detail.<br />
<br />
Bringing back Pooka comes with a high set of standards, ones in which Into the Dark failed to meet, but they gave me Malcolm Barrett and Rachel Bloom on my screen again, so how much can I really fault them for it?<br />
<br />
My favorite quote from this episode came from Matt when Molly admonished him for getting a beer as they were discussing how to fix this problem they now had: “If I’m gonna get murdered by some demonic toy, I’m gonna be buzzed when it happens.”<br />
<br />
What did you guys think of the episode? What was your favorite scene? Who were your favorite characters? Did they leave that ending open enough to bring it back for a third and final time? An alien invasion, apparently. This month’s installment of Into the Dark was better than expected, but still lacked the fundamentals of a good horror movie.<br />
<br />
Let me first introduce you to our cast of characters: Shauna (Giorgia Whigham - The Punisher), the drug dealer who’s narrating the story. She’s fun, but she knows when to be serious. Also, yeah, she thinks the moon landing was faked. Misty (Pepi Sonuga - Famous in Love) is our resident sad girl, for good reason. Last year, she was drugged and presumably assaulted by a member of the frat on campus.<br />
<br />
Here, we meet Chloe (Jude Demorest - Star) and Aaron (Cameron Fuller - The Last Ship). Chloe is Misty’s carefree, positivity-will-cure-your-depression best friend, and Aaron is another member of the frat who turns out to be more than just a guy in a frat. There’s also the sharp-tongued Yuejin (Olivia Liang - Legacies) who is Chloe’s new best friend, a replacement of Misty if you will. I won’t. The concept of “mean girl replaces nice old best friend” is so worn out that I’m pretty over it.<br />
<br />
One big problem with Into the Dark is that it has a very hard time creating characters I actually care about. Most of the time I’m just waiting for everyone to die. This episode had more likable characters than usual, but even the good ones got on my nerves a few times. Shauna, I know you’re Not Like Other Girls, but did you have to say it three times in the span of an hour and a half?<br />
<br />
The worst, unsurprisingly, are Chloe and Yuejin. Not only is Chloe just all-around annoying, but she also doesn’t shy away from telling Misty that she straight-up doesn’t believe that she was assaulted. At first, it’s subtle -- judging glances, eye rolls, etc. But then it gets to the point where, close to the end, she literally says “this is not your made-up bullshit” in reference to the alien invasion. Chloe yells at Misty, and runs away, calling her “psycho” when Misty tells her they need to prick her finger to see if her blood is red or green. It makes sense that this isn’t normal, but to flip that switch on your so-called best friend that quick is… Yikes. She sucks.<br />
<br />
The issue with Yuejin is that she’s fine -- she’s just terribly written. She was literally created to be a buffer between Chloe and Misty, when, in my opinion, I think we could’ve done completely without her. She adds almost nothing to the plot except to be a person of doubt, and then later, when she becomes an alien, to add drama to an already dramatic scene.<br />
<br />
There’s also a weird amount of inconsistencies in this episode. At one point, when everyone is pricking their finger to convince each other they’re not aliens, Shauna hesitates. Why? We don’t know. It’s never explained. In the same scene, Alien!Yuejin then stabs Shauna in the shoulder, yet that’s the end of it. She never seems like she’s in pain after that, it never becomes a problem for her.
<br />
<br />
We also never got an explanation as to where everyone in the town suddenly disappeared to. While we can assume they all became aliens, we also don’t see nearly as many aliens at the end of the episode as in the beginning. It was just a bit strange that that wasn’t really touched on.<br />
<br />
The worst part of this episode, by far, is when Shauna decides to bring everyone to her house to get advice from her mom (Virginia Louise Smith - Scandal). It’s not even anything to do with the plot, but there’s a part where they emphasize the number of weapons Ms. Shore has, and to do so they do a jumpy camera motion with dubstep playing in the background. I had to pause it for a second to take it all in.<br />
<br />
There were some good things about the episode, though! The cast all worked phenomenally together -- they had incredible chemistry -- and the directing was fun. Each voiceover featured a paused slow-zoom which I think made it a lot more fun and modern. The acting was also much better than some previous Into the Dark episodes, and for that, I was very thankful.<br />
<br />
My favorite part of the episode was when Misty and Shauna were about to go into the frat house and Misty explained to Shauna why she was hesitant. Shauna acted much more maturely than Chloe apparently did when she found out, saying “yeah, hi, believe women, it’s 2020!” before grabbing Misty’s hand and gently tugging her into the house.<br />
<br />
Overall, I liked the episode a lot more than I thought I would. I’m gonna be honest with you guys, the trailers for these installments are almost never good, so when this one was especially bad, I was afraid it would transfer into the episode, but it didn’t! While I would’ve loved to be more scared, as it is a horror-anthology, I can forgive it with the news that Pooka is back next month. Join me then!
<br />
