Today's Pitch Your Show edition focuses on shows H-L and includes the third and fourth most nominated shows, Leverage and The Librarians. Since Leverage is my favorite crime procedural of all time, I wholeheartedly agree with its pitches. The character growth in it alone should make it heavily sampled. However, if crime procedurals are not your thing, there are plenty of other shows to try from heartfelt Canadian dramas to historical fiction chronicling the rise of personal computers and modern medicine to the funniest zombie romp you'll ever watch and so much more. Here's hoping something catches your imagination. To keep the articles short and readable, all pitches were edited for length (less than 300 words), clarity, and grammar. I have also limited nominations to 3 per show with a few very popular shows having 4. I am truly sorry if your nomination is not in here. Know that I appreciate your time and pitches. Making the choice of what went in was difficult. After all sections are posted, I will include a link to the original spreadsheet so you can read them all in their entirety. Also, don’t forget to add your comments below. What shows do you recommend?

Milo – This show is just too good. If you've missed Mad Men, Halt and Catch Fire is the show for you, taking place in the 1980s and following the early rise in personal computers. Its four lead characters, played by Lee Pace, Mackenzie Davis, Scoot McNairy and Kerry Bische are all absolutely fantastic in their performances. The series itself is one of those that rewards people who stick with it, perfectly bingeable with one great season after another. The character relations are great and it shines a rare spotlight on women in the tech industry, putting its two female leads front and center to great success. The soundtrack too is among the best on television, with carefully curated Spotify playlists available for each of the lead characters. The drama is consistently brilliant and it's unmissable, essential television.

LauraLoo – If gore and horror is not your thing I totally understand if you want to skip out on this show. It’s certainly not for everyone, and even I had to take my time getting through the first season. But if you can look past all of that and appreciate its beauty and aesthetics, then you will adore this show. It takes these characters that you’ve probably seen in one way before and shapes them into new beings. The chemistry between Hannibal Lecter and Will Graham is palpable all throughout the series, and if you know how the show ends it makes perfect sense, even at the beginning of the show. The rest of the characters are all outstanding too. It’s a wonder how none of them ever won any Emmys. Each season is remarkably different, with later seasons scrapping that procedural format and turning full-on serialized. It seems to be widely regarded that the last two seasons were the better ones, but I really enjoyed the first season for what it was. So, if watching shows like Hannibal is your design, then you’ll simply salivate over this offering too.

Milo – Bryan Fuller is currently working on his excellent series American Gods, so what better time to discover (or revisit) the wonderfully twisted Hannibal, that ran for three seasons on NBC before finally being axed but not before delivering some of the most memorable and gory episodes of television that I've ever seen. Boasting plenty of style, the show takes the Hannibal Lecter character to new heights following a brilliant performance by Mads Mikkelsen and Hugh Dancy, with Mikkelsen delivering a near iconic performance as Lecter himself. This is one of those rare shows that's best not saved for binge-watching, rather savoring a few episodes at a time, as it's just so uniquely crafted, brilliantly executed, and wonderfully made. Give it a shot. Despite being cancelled, it does have an effective ending that leaves the series open for a possible fourth season. By the end, you'll be wondering how a show as messed up as this ever ended up on NBC in the first place.

Kewana – The procedural action of the show will draw you in and keep you guessing each episode, but the great characters and relationships keep you watching and in awe. There isn't another friendship out there like the one on this show. It’s funny, loving, and entertaining. Not to mention, there are beautiful scenic shots of Hawaii, a diverse cast, and lots of fun to watch.

Joy Haldar – First and foremost, you DO NOT need to watch the original to enjoy this reboot. This is an independent, strong show on its own rights by all accounts. Now in its 8th season, it's still going strong quality wise & ratings wise (one of the rare broadcast shows whose numbers went up year-to-year). The cast is a pure gem. They feel like family from get to. From the charismatic leader in Steve to his nagging, worrywart, hilarious partner Danny, who is also the best TV dad IMHO, to bada** female characters like Kono, Doris, Catherine, this show has got it all. There's also great diversity, which makes it even more special in my eyes. The thing that instantly clicked with me was the epic bromance between Steve and Danny. I am a sucker for that and this show delivered and how! It's truly on another level. Another thing I appreciate is that there's no unnecessary romance melodrama to slow down the narrative. Sure, there are cases of the week but that's not ALL this show is. The character interactions are the main focus here, not the cases they solve. They work as a team and they would walk through fire for one another if need be. They always have each other's backs. The gorgeous backdrop of Hawaii only adds to the narrative. The way the showrunner and writers incorporate this island's traditions and culture into the show is just awe-inspiring. If there was ever a perfect procedural, this is IT. It's got a lot of heart. In no time you will fall in love with the characters and for those who love action, you won't be let down either. High octane chase sequences and explosions make a deadly combo. It’s perfect Friday night entertainment.

Priscilla Starkey – It's the greatest crime show on tv with great stars like Alex O’Loughlin and Scott Caan.

Amberly – Heartland is a heartwarming family drama about a family that runs a ranch in Alberta, Canada. Based on a book series, the show begins with death of Amy’s mother, which leads to her older sister returning home to help run the ranch with their grandfather. One of the main functions of the ranch is working to heal troubled and/or abused horses. The show is quite feel good, never too dark or angsty, and it follows the family through their work with horses and other animals as well as changes in their personal lives (marriage, children, etc.) There are lots of good characters you connect with as well as lots of beautiful horses. The show is Canadian and has aired 10 seasons so far and was recently renewed for an eleventh. The early seasons also feature recurring roles played by Stephen Amell (Arrow) and Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black).

Chelsea Para – The longest running scripted one hour show in Canada, Heartland is a family friendly drama that has good writing, interesting characters, and beautiful scenery and horses. People of every age can enjoy what the show brings to the table each week. You don't even have to be "horsey" to enjoy the show since plenty of time is spent on the human storylines as well. For those that are going to watch for the horses, this show covers many different disciplines and horsemanship techniques, all of which are fun to watch, and it's easy to get attached to all the character horses.

Folielex – Based on a comic book, this show chronicles the story of Christopher Chance, a former hit man who, plagued by a tragic and blood-soaked past, now works as a for-hire bodyguard. He protects his clients by secretly infiltrating their lives in order to draw out and eliminate threats. Running point on the missions is Winston, a former cop. Also, Guerrero, a former colleague from Chance's old life, more often than not offers his unique set of skills to help out. The second season also saw the addition of Mrs. Isla Pucci, a rich, socialite philanthropist who started out as a client and ended up footing the bill for the company, and Ames, a street smart thief who joins the team. Portrayed by the wonderful Mark Valley, Christopher Chance has all the Jason Bourne moves with all the James Bond charisma and wraps that up with a fun cowboy attitude that just make the show a joy to watch. The supporting cast of Chi McBride and Jackie Earle Haley is stellar, especially when it's just those two playing off each other. Their chemistry and their characters' bickering make for some of the best moments the whole series has to offer. The ladies introduced in season 2 were a welcome addition to the fully male cast and added some interesting layers and dynamics to the show. Overall this was a FUN-tastic piece of popcorn-action TV, with some great character moments peppered in there. I honestly wish there was more than just 25 episodes. On a positive note, there are no major cliffhangers, simply a "the show goes on despite the curtain call" vibe. So, feel free dive into this world and not be left hanging, just simply yearning there was more.

Ellys Cartin - An unexpected delight this TV season, Inbar Lavi plays chameleon Maddie, a con artist who works with a team in the employ of a sinister type called The Doctor. Her act is making people fall in love with and marry her. Then she takes everything they have. Imposters picks up when two of her former husbands team up to track her down. Ezra and Richard couldn't be any different, which produces quite a bit of humor as they start to form a junior con artist team of their own. As for Maddie, Lavi is a revelation, spellbinding as she switches personalities and studies her marks. The first season combines romance, road trip comedy, soapy suspense, and cat/mouse interactions to create a first-rate guilty pleasure.

Ezio Auditore – This is a different take on the zombie genre that is fun and quirky. The series stars Medical Examiner Olivia 'Liv' Moore who is scratched and turns into a brain craving zombie the night of a yacht party. Now working as an ME for Seattle police, Liv discovers that she has the ability to gain the memories, personality and skills of the deceased person whose brain she eats, allowing her to help solve their murders. Working alongside her is her eccentric boss Ravi, and a detective, Clive. All while, Liv tries to keep the secret of zombies from her roommate lawyer Peyton and her ex-fiancée Major. As the series progresses Liv learns there are others like her and that not all of them are as friendly as she is. Also, the accident that turned her into a zombie may not have been an accident after all.

Milo – The CW's main comic adaption that isn't from a superhero source material, it offers the most unique approach on the zombie genre that I've seen and is just so much fun. Liv Moore is a M.D., who becomes a zombie after attending a party and wakes up with a thirst for brains that give her memories - and the personalities - of the deceased whose brains she has consumed. So naturally, she gets a job at the morgue and as a result, there's several new cases, each with different and often hilarious consequences. The cast have among the best chemistry that I've seen in any show, and Rose McIver's acting is excellent as she adopts a brand-new personality each week. Fans of other CW shows will find plenty to love here, and it rarely disappoints. Three seasons in and with a fourth on the way, iZombie is a rarity among zombie shows - it's actually entertaining!

Dahne – Simply put, this is the most pure fun show on The CW. While many of their shows get bogged down in angst and melodrama, iZombie is there to entertain with one of the fastest moving plots on TV. The story twists and turns, going places you never think it will, including a massive twist at the end of the third season which makes the fourth season the most anticipated yet. It’s a sci-fi, police procedural with highly serialized season-long arcs becoming more serialized as the series goes on. Best of all, it never gets boring because Liv, the main character, changes in each episode based on whatever brain she ate last. Rose McIver does an inspired job of adding the changing character elements but still keeping the heart of Liv the same. Plus, it has a great strictly platonic relationship between Liv and Ravi, her boss in the ME’s lab. The banter between the two is a lot of fun without the unnecessary “will they-won’t they” nonsense that hampers and ruins most procedurals. If you are looking for a great romp of a TV show, try this one out. Don’t let the zombie thing stop you, because this is unlike any other zombie show on TV.

Charlotte – I'll be honest, I expected very little from this comedy when I tried it out. It's made by Youtubers and is exclusively available on a minor streaming service. But oh boy, should you not judge this series by its cover. It's genuinely one of the funnier shows I've seen anywhere, bigwig networks included. Its genre of humor leans on the silly side. Think of a show led by Parks and Rec's Andy Dwyer. It's creative, fun, and easy to laugh with. What more could you ask?

Justified: Amazon Prime

Milo – Justified is far more than just your average crime show. Adapted from the work of Elmore Leonard, this six-season long series follows the adventures of US Marshall Raylan Givens, a certified bada** with a badge. The villains are among the best I've ever seen on television, with particularly standout performances by Walton Goggins as Boyd Crowder as well as a spectacular role for Margo Martindale in the show's best season, its second. This show, hands down, has the best dialogue on television. Nothing else even comes close to matching its best lines. With one of the best finales ever, this crime show is a must watch, period. It's essentially a modern day western and always worth catching up on if you haven't seen it already.

Milo – Sadly cancelled after two seasons, Cinemax's The Knick is something that should not be overlooked as it is a pure gem and worth watching despite this. It's a medical show unlike any other medical show on television, taking place during the early years of medicine in early 1800’s New York. It's expertly directed and shot in a continuous way so that each scene perfectly transitions from the next, and its cinematography and direction is nothing short of superb, thanks in no small part to the involvement of the fantastic Steven Soderbergh (Ocean's Eleven) who directed every episode of Season 1. The soundtrack from Drive and Neon Demon composer Cliff Martinez is excellent, and the atmosphere is just brilliant. The cast is nothing short of exceptional too, with award-worthy performances by Clive Owen (Children of Men) and Andre Holland (Moonlight) in particular. It tackles issues such as racism, corruption and drug abuse all around the operating table, and still manages to maintain a large element of dark humor. It doesn't shy away from showing plenty of blood and guts though, so if you're squeamish, this is one to stay clear of!

Ellys Cartin – Before everyone decided to make military dramas again, TNT had already launched its thrilling, suspenseful The Last Ship. I love this show to pieces. It's rare for me to care about every character on a show, but these post-apocalyptic dramas always do it for me. The crew of the USS Nathan James thinks they are just on a normal off-the-grid mission, escorting a couple scientists on the side. But when they resume communications at the end of the mission, they discover the world as they knew it is gone, lost to a terrible plague and there's no time machine to fix it. There's no zombies either, though that's small comfort, especially when most of them have lost their entire families. Now they have a new mission: helping the scientists make a vaccine and then rebuilding the world from the ground up. Of course, whoever controls the vaccine will control the new world, so they face multiple enemies on land and at sea. This produces countless exciting action sequences. You don't want to miss Eric Dane as Captain Tom Chandler and Adam Baldwin as Captain Mike Slattery. I could go on and on about each character, including Special Forces team members Danny, Carlton, and, later on, Wolf. Just when you think the show can't get any better, it has its best season yet in season 3 when Bridget Regan joins the cast!

Ellys Cartin – If you had told me last year that Legends of Tomorrow would ditch all its season 1 baggage, bring in the best villain lineup ever, and become totally awesome for season 2, I would not have believed you but that's what happened. No need to watch season 1. The show brings you up to speed. Sara Lance, former deluxe assassin/recently resurrected bada** takes the captain's chair of the time ship Waverider, leading Firestorm, Atom, Vixen and historian Nate Heywood everywhere from the Jurassic Area to the Moon to Camelot to World War 1. Their mission is to work together to thwart the attempts of the Legion of Doom (so entertaining) to rewrite reality and find out where their former leader Rip Hunter has gotten to. Along the way, the show is just a ton of fun, with neat visual effects and costumes, as well as exciting action pieces. The show could only be more perfect if it had amazing character development and a strong villain....OH, WAIT, it has all that too! This is one so good you'll want to rewatch!!!

Ellys Cartin – Whether you won't watch a comic book show to save your life or your life revolves around comic book shows, Legion is not to be missed. David Haller lives in Clockworks Psychiatric Hospital, because supposedly voices in his head drove him to attempt suicide. His existence of pills and therapy sessions is disrupted by a newcomer, Syd Barrett. The quiet young woman doesn't let anyone touch her, but David is drawn to her and they become friends. Then the day comes for Syd to be released. Things go horribly wrong and those voices in David's head just might be pretty dangerous. Yes, Legion is connected to the X-Men universe. Yes, there are mutants but it doesn't follow the same old formula. Sinister backstory reveals itself to us, as David begins to understand what he's capable of, and the show uses creative, entrancing visuals to illustrate his journey. In addition to fine work from Dan Stevens as David, the supporting cast, especially Aubrey Plaza, present top-notch characters. You have to pay attention while watching Legion, but there's real payoff when you do. The whole story comes together wonderfully!

Milo – You want weird? You've got weird. Weird is pretty much the one word that most sums up Legion, the breakout new series of 2017. It's smart, clever and inventive, with nods to movies like A Clockwork Orange, and is far and away the most unique take on the X-Men universe yet. But then, given the nature of David Haller in the comics, anything less would have been a disappointment. Often confusing but always great, featuring an Emmy-worthy performances by Aubrey Plaza, Dan Stevens, and Rachel Keller, Legion is the must watch show of the year and with a great soundtrack to boot, it's one of this year's most unique shows and should not be ignored under any circumstances.

Darla – I got hooked on the show when it first aired. I have to admit, I checked it out for Christian Kane but stayed because of the whole cast. They found the perfect ensemble for Leverage without giving in to stereotypes. I enjoyed watching those loners turn into a family and how they used their criminal talents for good, helping people that nobody else would or could help. The stories were always realistic and never lost their humor despite being a con show. I still enjoy going back and regularly watching an episode, as for 40 minutes they make you believe that there are actually people out there that can make this unfair world right again for a little while. How ironic that it's a gang of thieves of all people. Yeah, sometimes the bad guys really do make the best good guys.

Emily Dickinson – Entertaining for the whole family! Amazing cast with great chemistry! Never a dull moment!

Mary E. Brewster – Why to watch Leverage? So many reasons. The premise of the show to begin with. There’s the Robinhoodlums, five different and distinctive personalities, that come together to help those who have been wronged and can’t go against the establishment (or person) on their own. They each bring their own sets of talents to the table – mastermind, grifter, hacker, thief, and hitter. Together they help those who can't help themselves because sometimes the best good guys are the bad guys. The scripts are sometimes taken from the headlines and brought to life with creative genius. I love how at the end of the episode it shows how each of the cons were pulled off, a mini re-cap of the episode. The action is in good proportion, not too much and not too little. The actors (Christian Kane, Aldis Hodge, Gina Bellman, Beth Riesgraf, Timothy Hutton) fit so well with their characters and worked so well together that it came across on the screen. The sets and locations were as well chosen as the cast. The whole show came together to create a wonderful hour of fun, exciting entertainment. The chemistry of the cast though is what makes the show magnificent and still well-loved. So Leverage is my recommendation!

Telisha – They are highly trained at doing bad things - hacking, beating people up, stealing, etc. - but they decide to take on the bad guys who use legal loopholes, money and power to continue to hurt people through drug trials that kill, companies that legally steal homes, and more. They go after the people the law can't and they do it as a family. The close-knit inner family really makes the show great.

Kathy Ares – The Librarians is a great family show, full of suspense, action, and magic. Everyone will enjoy it.

Clarike - Family-fun series with a hint of history that grows on you a little more every season!

Honorat – It’s fun for the whole family and doesn't take itself too seriously. There’s lots of variety in episodes and has great characters and actors. Smart and even occasionally educational, it can also have emotional and dramatic moments. Plus, it doesn't believe in cliff hanger season finales. Mixing up the stereotypes, the guardian colonel is a woman. The Asian character is a lovable rogue, the thief with a heart of gold who can't fight and is full of snark. The cowboy bar-fighting character is the art historian and linguist who loves literature. The girl in the cute clothes is the cutthroat scientist, non-neurotypical, and bi. The head librarian is charming and scatterbrained but a genius. John Laroquette--need I say more. It's a great ensemble cast.

Karen Wampler - It's a bit of action, a bit of comedy, and a whole lot of family friendly television!

LauraLoo – If you like any of the following you will enjoy this show: a wide variety of adorable and interesting characters, a stunningly layered and complex villain, a thoroughly relatable protagonist, a crime procedural that is so much more than just that, a serialized story arc surrounding a mythology that is routed in captivating sci-fi elements, a soundtrack and score that always plays the right songs in the right moments, a set of actors, actresses, writers, directors, and other creative cast and crew members who not just perform amazingly but have fun with the material they are creating, a show that gets better each week, a show that encompasses and transcends every genre you can think of? Limitless masked itself behind "your typical CBS police procedural", but proved week after week that it had so much more to offer. NZT-48 is a drug that allows you to access the full potential inside of you, and with that comes a lot of crazy scenarios and situations. If you dropped it after the pilot in fear that it would be unoriginal and boring, it is NOT. This show cared deeply about how it presented its cases of the week. Whether it was quirky animations or Brian's crazy NZT antics, the writers knew about the inherent stigma towards this genre and always strived to create a world beyond this, despite the serialized moments being the best part of every episode. If that's not enough, the two lead characters weren't involved in some forced romance. They remained friends and that friendship was excellent. This show knew how to have fun and serious, heartfelt moments. It was cancelled too soon, but fear not, it did not end on a cliffhanger.

Ellys Cartin - Lucifer was not what I expected. I started watching with the season 2 premiere, and it took my breath away. For one thing, the cast is amazing and the strong storytelling perfectly complements their talent. The cases of the week capture your attention, the screenwriting is peppered with smart humor, and almost no other show as thoughtfully or realistically handles spiritual questions like this one does. Every episode is super entertaining. Characters grow and change, you actually don't see the twists coming, and Tricia Helfer plays Lucifer's loving but scheming Mom! I can't help but watch it live, although all episodes are available on Hulu to binge...again and again.

It’s the time of year for lists. Christmas shopping lists, wishlists for Father Christmas. Oh, and end of year lists ranking entertainment across various fields.

Last week, SpoilerTV published its team’s collective top 20 shows of 2017, as voted for by nearly 50 team members here on the site. Subsequently, voting was opened up to readers to choose their top ten for the year, the results of which will be published on New Year’s Eve.

For this week’s Adams’ Analysis column - the last of 2017 - I thought I’d share my top 15 shows of the year. This was a tough list to make, not only in ranking the contenders (*) but working out quite where the threshold line should be drawn. A top ten felt too constrictive, while a list of 17, which I’d initially pencilled on an iPhone note, seemed too bloated. So here’s a top 15, appearing in chronological order because there’s little need for suspense - to quote Monica Geller, this isn’t a courtroom drama.

(*) Or, at least, the shows not in the top three, which had been set in stone for some time.

1. The Leftovers

There’s a good case to be made that The Leftovers is the best show of this decade to have premiered in this decade. Its third and final season was, like season two before it, a masterful, perfect piece of artistic genius. Weird and wonderful wouldn’t even begin to cover what it did in its final eight hours - a Perfect Strangers-themed hour featuring Mark Linn-Baker, an episode set on an orgy boat with God on-board, an afterlife-set outing with two Justin Therouxs. All the while, it was hauntingly beautiful in every discipline. With a cast of stunning performers, not least Carrie Coon, every moment felt real and not a single emotional beat was skipped. For all that naysayers could criticise its abstract nature and the lack of any concrete answers as to the origins of the Great Departure, the execution was glorious to watch. Plus, The Leftovers produced what was probably both the best shot and best quote of the year.

2. Better Call Saul

The longer Better Call Saul runs, the further from Breaking Bad it gets. Yet season three, its best to date, pulled in a whole bunch of old faces to complement what is now a show that, in its own right, is utterly unmissable television. In the feud between brothers McGill, Jimmy (Bob Odenkirk) and Chuck (Michael McKean), the core of Saul is one worthy of investment, with an emotional resonance perhaps deeper and more relatable than any of Heisenberg’s. In the fifth episode, “Chicanery”, viewers were treated to one of the best hours of the year with McKean’s subsequent snub for a Supporting Actor Emmy baffling. The story of Kim (Rhea Seehorn, whose strong performances often go under the radar outside of critic circles) keeping Jimmy somewhat in the light continues to ground the series, while bringing aboard famed villain Gus Fring (Giancarlo Esposito) gave new focus and intrigue to Mike’s (Jonathan Banks) arc. This is a well-oiled, incredible drama. It may never eclipse Breaking Bad, but it sure is pushing for that.

3. Halt and Catch Fire

There is no hint of irony lost in the symbolism of Halt and Catch Fire, a show based on the tech surge of the 1980s and 1990s, but one which succeeds largely due to its human elements - the connections between people are more important than the ones on a hard drive, if you will. As the show came to an end in its fourth season, it spared no expense in producing some of the most impactful moments across its run. Criticism of pacing issues in the first half of the season felt unnecessary, but by the second half Halt had a very clear vision of exactly how it would come to a close: with a gut-punch and satisfaction. The antepenultimate hour, “Goodwill”, is an exercise in grief and pain, giving the material for some standout performances from everyone involved. With Kerry Bishé and Mackenzie Davis, Halt is able to provide a remarkable dynamic that is easy to become heavily invested in, and pays off four years of development between them in a beautiful series finale. This is one of the true underrated shows, and boy, was it top tier.

4. Legion

FX’s foray into the Marvel universe went swimmingly, with Legion an impressive feat of twisty storytelling that really utilised all of its potential: the budget was clear to see, the sci-fi element given from the comic background made weirdness a staple, Noah Hawley’s tone turned it into something that was both dark and had levity. Legion worked at least in part because its focus was less the superhero elements than it was the mental state of its characters, whose development was terrific throughout. Through the writing and some excellent performances - Dan Stevens, Rachel Keller and Aubrey Plaza were especially outstanding - this show was transformed into something more than just the standard Marvel production line fare.

5. Sweet/Vicious

Sweet/Vicious began as something of a light procedural with a very dark basis that, for the first few episodes, was underutilised. But by the time the show rolled around into its 2017 episodes, things took a turn: the vigilantism of Jules (Eliza Bennett) and Ophelia (Taylor Dearden) remained, but the focus shifted from ‘target-of-the-week’ into exploring the former’s sexual assault, the ramifications of it for her and all those around her, and how the system in place for reporting such crimes fails the victims who need it. There were several occasions in which a stress ball wouldn’t go amiss to assist in viewing it, and where the highest compliment possible is: “That was awful to watch.” Bennett’s magnetic performance anchored the heavy material; Jules’ struggle was that much harder to watch thanks to her superb display. Sweet/Vicious was the kind of powerful, affecting television that Peak TV has made possible and that we, as a society, absolutely need. It is a real shame that there will be no more of it.

6. The Americans

You could probably argue that The Americans’ fifth season was the weakest of the show, but that does little to demean it, for it remains one of the very best things television has to offer. Sure, at times the series’ typically slow pace can be felt, and the plot involving the pest-resistant wheat does take too long to fully materialise - despite it giving Matthew Rhys an opportunity for one of his best scenes of the year - but there was plenty to love, from Paige’s (Holly Taylor) training to Henry’s (Keidrich Sellati) increased presence. Matters outside the Jennings household remained riveting, too, with Stan’s (Noah Emmerich) moral dilemmas and new girlfriend a major part of the season. Though creators Joel Fields and Joe Weisberg said this wasn’t intended as a set-up season for next year’s final outing, it certainly felt that way at times. Not that it was a bad thing.

7. One Day at a Time

Though the first two episodes aren’t especially great, One Day at a Time very quickly transcends into a terrifically wonderful show. The season is aided by the loose story arc that binds all thirteen half-hours - with each episode a step closer to Elena’s (Isabella Gomez) Quinceañera - in that there is a sense of direction, but One Day at a Time succeeds in large part due to its non-comedic moments. From the fifth episode onwards, at least one, often long, scene per half-hour shifts in tone to be emotionally heavy, while the finale is almost entirely devoid of laughs. It is powerful, moving television, and an aspect that enhances this series immensely, particularly when the comedy that does exist is not perfect; Rita Moreno is superb, but only about two-thirds of the jokes land overall, and very few are side-splittingly funny. At times, it does feel like the show leans a little too heavily on quite literally telling its statements on the world rather than showing it, but the material is handled so sensitively that looking past that criticism is pretty easy. This was a real joy to watch.

8. Last Week Tonight

It is perhaps both a blessing and a curse that Last Week Tonight has become such a necessity in 2017. Even aside from the topics of conversation surrounding President Trump’s - “two words that continue to sound revolting together like 'viscous discharge' and 'moist stockings'” - first year in office, John Oliver took in-depth issues facing the general public and turned them into entertaining, compelling news pieces (Oliver maintains the show isn’t journalism, even where all logic from watching it disagrees) that deserved viewing every week. Looking at issues like gerrymandering, net neutrality, vaccine safety, US Border Patrol, forensic evidence, among other things, Last Week Tonight leads the way in talk show programming as Oliver continues to be one of the funniest comics on late-night television.

9. Baskets

Baskets is a television gem that remains highly underrated, even with Louie Anderson having won a Supporting Actor Emmy just over a year ago. This Zach Galiafianakis comedy combines slapstick humour - generally Galiafianakis’ modus operandi here - with wit and occasional self-deprecation, with Anderson’s turn as Chip Baskets’ (Galiafianakis) mother, Christine, generally dry; Christine’s life isn’t treated as the joke, Anderson instead treating her without taking any comedic mileage from the fact that he’s playing a woman. That was a smart move, and as season two begins delving deeper into her life, particularly as Chip faces trouble with the law, his identical twin brother, and the failing of his career as a clown, Anderson shines in getting to Christine’s emotional core. It is a highly impressive show.

10. Brooklyn Nine-Nine

In 2017, Brooklyn was able to take plenty of risks - having Gina (Chelsea Peretti) be hit by a bus, sending two lead characters in Jake (Andy Samberg) and Rosa (Stephanie Beatriz) to prison, exploring sensitive issues like race and sexuality - and was all the better for it. The comedy remains stronger than ever, with Andre Braugher’s continued omission from major award nominations utterly perplexing.

11. Brockmire

If the premise of Brockmire, the IFC show based on a Funny or Die short which follows baseball announcer Jim Brockmire (Hank Azaria) trying to rebuild his career after a vulgar outburst while drunk, was nothing more than a network executive saying, “Get me Chief Wiggum calling baseball and saying the most explicit sentences known to man,” it wouldn’t be surprising. The result is a show truly hysterical. Never would you realise how necessary it is to see Azaria’s range of language until you see it, but below the surface, some superb character work between him and Amanda Peet’s Jules makes for a well-rounded comedy that more people should watch.

12. The Good Place

It was in very early 2017 that The Good Place revealed the comedy twist of the year, with co-creator Michael Schur hinting his latest show is perhaps less Parks and Recreation than it is LOST. In doing so, another layer of genius was added to the series as it was given plenty more scope in terms of future plot. Season two has seen Ted Danson run the show, both within the narrative and from an outside perspective, as Michael’s façade was able to come to an end, allowing Danson to make full use of the immeasurable range he has. He and Kristen Bell - also excellent - are aided by a cast of great performers, perhaps no more so than D’Arcy Carden who, in the second season, has given real emotional weight to Janet while finding a balance with her status as, essentially, a supercomputer in flesh form. Where the other Schur series on this list, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, doesn’t rely much on plot, The Good Place is a very narrative-heavy comedy that manages to weave in unfathomable amounts of jokes, both spoken and - in similar style to The Simpsons - visual.

13. Rick and Morty

Season three kept up the high-quality work that Rick and Morty had produced in the previous two seasons, once again finding a perfect mix between the dark, sincere moments and the outlandishly crazy comedic elements. The show keeps up its almost procedural formula on a weekly basis with connecting threads to be seen everywhere, and each outing provides something new, whether that is Rick becoming a pickle, an episode showing how Rick keeps wiping Morty’s mind, or an episode set in the Citadel of Ricks - the best of the season, and one of the best of the year overall. Its intelligence knows no bounds, the writing is sharp and the voice acting is fantastic.

14. Sneaky Pete

In some way, Sneaky Pete is akin to FX’s Fargo - both series qualify, quite blatantly, as black comedy-dramas, both feature acting showcases across the board, and both have something of a twisty narrative that is always smart. Only Sneaky Pete is perhaps less narratively strong at times, and had a tendency - in the first half of the season, at least - to focus more on the comedy than the drama, mostly as Marius tries to keep his cover intact and steer clear of Winslow (Michael O’Keefe). But there is a real charm to the episodes, which expertly blend those two genres in a way that makes this so entertaining. All of the performers get their due, including a chillingly tremendous threat from Margo Martindale, Peter Gerety’s highly emotional late-season scheme to save the family, and a Breaking Bad “Half Measures”-like speech that Bryan Cranston gets to deliver. That’s not to mention a consistently terrific performance from Giovanni Ribisi. It’s difficult not to wonder how the show can keep up the charades in season two, but what is for sure is that these first ten episodes were great.

15. Game of Thrones

This wasn’t Thrones’ strongest year, despite a terrific pair of episodes in the middle of season seven. Fewer episodes didn’t benefit the show much at all, each hour ultimately feeling overstuffed with plots. The season was elevated, as seems typical now, by moments being better than the sum of their parts. A number of strong performances, especially from Lena Headey once again, helped too, and even when not at its best, Game of Thrones remains a generally very good show.
Interview

At the end of the episode, we learn that Comet’s future isn’t so bright now that Rover has sorted out its algorithm. Where can we expect Comet, which we know will fail when it comes to search, to go from here?

That’s like the gorgeousness of the show! Over and over, we already kind of know the outcomes. The purpose of this show is to explore the characters and the way they think and the reason they make the choices they do. The purpose, obviously, is not to find out “what happens,” because we pretty much know that as a society. “Oh, that’s the algorithm? We know what happens to the algorithm?” It rides its course. Also, I literally don’t know because I left the show after episode 8. I asked them a bunch of times what’s happening in the next episode, and they’re like, “Oh we don’t know…” I actually don’t know what ends up going on with Comet and how it meets its fate. Just even watching the struggle and the striving and Joe’s vision, I love this Comet-Rover dynamic just because it is this story of this same vision taking different roads. That’s fascinating about life. That’s one of those things that we’re always asking about — the road not taken. So we get to explore that.

GAME OF THRONES, "Eastwatch", August 13, 2017, Actors: Kit Harington, Emilia Clarke, Kristofer Hivju, Rory McCann and more, The Scenes: The Ending & Jon touches Drogon
Justyna K: Many happy returns and reunions took place in this episode but it's the moment at the very end that stole the hour for me. Just the fact that all these characters, who never really had a chance to interact with each other before, are heading out together to face their worst enemy gives this scene such a powerful meaning. I'm very much excited to see the dynamics between these men and all the fights ahead of them. It's quite surreal to imagine this company of seven characters from completely different backgrounds and stories join forces for this suicide mission. I do hope most of them will make it but I'm definitely expecting the loss to be a part of this journey beyond the Wall. When Jon, Davos, Gendry and Jorah arrive at the Eastwatch we get a glimpse of what the interactions between the group will be and it's already brilliant. With Tormund, the Hound and the Brotherhood there, things are about to get even better. Can't wait. Absolutely loved that final shot with everyone facing the North. Kudos to cast & crew for yet another great episode.
Milo: The way that the hastily assembled characters were heading out at the end of an episode on a suicide mission echoed The Magnificent Seven and other such movies in how they were assembled from a bunch of misfits who never got on well into a team. The shot of them going North of the wall was epic, ending the episode on a really strong note.
Darth Locke: It's not so much that scene like this wasn't anticipated at some point, but rather there is something so emotionally gratifying at seeing a long-wished belief further realized. The show has always been good at nuance and doesn't always need words to reveal some of its greatest mysteries, but this scene really was done so well and was rightfully placed in the narrative, as Jon is about to leave Daenerys to head out on what could easily be perceived as a suicide mission. Looking back it took this almost tender and mysterious scene and made it all the more bittersweet looking ahead, as the penultimate episode of the season feels like it's going to be another game changer.

HALT AND CATCH FIRE, "So it Goes", August 19, 2017, Actors: Lee Pace, Scoot McNairy and more
The Scene: Opening Scene
Milo: Fast paced with a brilliant score, this opening scene instantly thrust us back into the new season with an excellent starting point as we got to see what Joe and Gordon were up to. I've been really looking forward to and I was sold on this from the get go.

MIDNIGHT TEXAS, "Sexy Beast", August 14, 2017, Actors: François Arnaud, Peter Mensah and more, The Scene: Manfred kills the Succubus
Darth Locke: This episode was just plain fun, being delightfully silly in a lot of respects, but I chose this scene, because of the effort Lemuel makes to give this creature a chance coming right after last week's episode with Lemuel taking a chance with other vamps that he nearly dies for. Manfred deciding to just cut to the chase was in some ways hysterical by being somewhat anticlimactic (and fits right in with the end of the first novel's narrative)--and shows thoughtful story progression, despite having a case of the week feel. But what about those teeth, though?

RAY DONOVAN, "Las Vegas", August 13, 2017, Actors: Lili Simmons, Liev Schreiber, The Scene: Final Scene
Darth Locke: Natalie James shows up on Ray's doorstep after saving her own dog. I really was not expecting the second episode of the season to be so good, but it was so well put together and meticulously layered, while also remaining so heartbreakingly surreal. It's clearer now to see Abby echoed through many of the newer female cast and also Ray's long deceased mother. The final scene with Ray just staring at the opening in the wall, the ones where the raccoons never were, with Natalie taking matters into her own hands after Ray had failed to save the dog himself was such poignant way to end the episode.
Laura: It was kind of hard to pick a scene from this thrill ride, but I think it has to be either this one or the dance party at the end. And while that was fun, this one was just cruel and hilarious to see. I don’t even know if it was really meant for Noob Noob anymore. What was all the baby decor and aesthetics doing there at the beginning of the ride? I thought surely that was Rick trying to have Morty remember his childhood and his innocence. I don’t know. But to see Rick actually cry was worth everything to me. And it’s not the first time, and it won’t be the last. This man does care…it’s just in odd, staggering ways.

SALVATION, "From Russia, With Love", August 16, 2017, Actors: Santiago Cabrera, Jennifer Finnigan
The Scene: Grace and Darius dance and open up to each other
DJRiter: Grace and Darius dancing and opening up to each other, while both of them are high off the Russian drug! Grace is becoming one of my favorite kick-a** heroines and Salvation, with its great writing and cast is fast becoming my favorite summer show!
Justyna K: It was a truly great finale of this much improved second season of the show. There were several moments worth highlighting but it's the scene of Jace's death that hit me the most. Though the death itself ended up being reversed pretty soon it doesn't take away from this powerful moment, made especially memorable by seeing the parabatai bond breaking. After watching the episode I came to the conclusion that this bond, represented on the show by Alec and Jace, is probably my favorite thing about the series and I wish we would get more focus on it. In this particular scene we see the sudden death of Jace and heartbroken Clary staying by his side till his last breath (great performance by Katherine McNamara) but in parallel we also follow Alec and the horrible pain he's feeling with his parabatai dying. The emotional aspect of the scene is especially clear with the flashbacks of the growing bond between Jace and Alec over the years, going back even to their childhood. I didn't expect this one to happen and the editing, along with music and actors' performances, made this scene especially memorable and quite possibly one of the best in the series for me. Kudos to cast & crew for all their work in this moment and the entire episode!
Adams, The Scene: Oliver kills it in court
Laura: It was even harder to pick a scene from this show and this episode this week. Every week is becoming increasingly harder to choose. And despite this being yet another short scene, again, I had no other choice here. Oliver finally being able to kill it in court was everything. And Mike sitting there in the back to watch him was the best! Unfortunately it was short lived because Alex has some weird, shady agenda but it was amazing. I hope we can still continue to see more of Oliver despite this prison case going off the rails.

TEEN WOLF, "After Images", August 13, 2017, Actors: Dylan Sprayberry, Michael Hogan and more
The Scene: The final scene
Marko: The final scene, Gerald's big plan revealed. I really enjoy the back half of TW's final season and the build up towards the revelations was perfectly handled. Tyler did an amazing job directing and somehow Dylan's performance felt reliable.
Justyna K: There's so many things I loved about this miniseries but fortunately the two scenes that I wanted to highlight the most from the first half of the season are both included in the article. Elektra's rebirth and transformation were such a powerful and brilliant sequence, with excellent performances by Élodie Yung and Sigourney Weaver. But the scene I wanted to focus on is the first fight of the Defenders. The show spends the first three episodes leading to this moment, to the part where our four main heroes finally meet and are immediately faced with dozens of fighters working for the Hand, including Elektra (or rather Black Sky). Such a good time to be a fan with all these characters joining forces. They don't all know each other but they recognize they're on the same side and support one another when needed. The fight in the hallway is brilliant on its own, with each of the characters getting their chance to shine but the most memorable part for me is Matt vs. Elektra. These two are both excellent fighters but in addition to their great skills the moment becomes especially significant when Matt is able to recognize his old love standing in front of him. His reaction and his subsequent actions in the next episodes are truly heartbreaking to watch. Kudos to Charlie Cox, who is absolutely fantastic in his performance throughout the series. The entire main fight is so well done. The choreography, the music, the shifts between characters, they all really set the tone for the story. Will surely go back to re-watch this one. Brilliant work by the cast & crew. Kudos!
Milo: First Defenders Group Fight Scene. I really loved the fight scene with Matt, Jessica, Luke and Danny against the Hand at the end of third episode. It was badass seeing them all fight on the same page together, especially with Elektra involved as well and everything paid out really strongly, playing to their abilities effectively.
Laura: I haven’t watched the show yet but this fight scene was pretty awesome and it’s making me want to binge all the seasons I haven’t seen just so I could get the context for this fight!
Marko: The Birth of Black Sky. Such an amazing scene. So beautifully executed with perfect performances from Élodie Yung and Sigourney Weaver.

THE SINNER, "Part III", August 16, 2017, Actors: Jessica Biel, Christopher Abbott and more
The Scene: The end scene with the masked man (picked by DarkUFO)

Like Joe MacMillan (Lee Pace), one of its four central characters, Halt and Catch Fire is always ready to evolve. In the third episode of its upcoming fourth and final season, one character says of Joe that "he just becomes whatever circumstance needs him to be", and it's one of the many meta moments show creators Christopher Cantwell and Christopher C. Rogers sprinkle into the first few episodes of their terrific drama's final season.

Don't let the show's non-existent ratings fool you: Halt and Catch Fire is one of TV's very best shows, and perhaps the only true successor to the dramas of TV's Golden Age. In today's era of Peak TV, Halt and Catch Fire is one of the few shows that has the same DNA as the likes of Mad Men, The Sopranos, and Breaking Bad, yet it also feels like something entirely fresh and new. But while its status as a great drama is no longer in doubt, its road to getting there was a tough one.

Starting out as a well-acted but shallow attempt to ape the success of the shows it now can safely be considered an equal to, to say Halt and Catch Fire went through some growing pains would be an understatement. But it responded to the criticism it received and adjusted course accordingly, reinventing itself as a show about a scrappy tech start-up run by its two female protagonists Cameron (Mackenzie Davis) and Donna (Kerry Bishé). By putting those characters in the forefront and sidelining male protagonists Joe and Gordon (Scoot McNairy), the show struck a creative goldmine. But unwilling to sit still and stagnate, the show shifted focus yet again for its third season, moving away from its dull Texas setting and relocating to Silicon Valley. And the show has not stopped adapting since.

But the show's adaptation doesn't just relate to its subject matter (which is, aside from being tech-related, constantly changing) or its setting. Constantly evolving are also the interpersonal relationships between the show's four lead characters. The dynamic between the four has never been constant for more than a few episodes, and yet the show has always managed to keep the ever-changing drama from feeling soapy. Instead, every place the characters go, both physically and emotionally, feel like natural extensions of their respective arcs.

And it's by grounding everything in strong character development that Halt and Catch Fire's final season works so well. I've seen three episodes of the ten (two of which premiere tonight on AMC), and with each one I've marveled at the ease with which the writers make every character decision make sense, every interaction insightful, all the while maintaining a healthy narrative momentum.

I hesitate to reveal too much about this season's plot. Halt and Catch Fire has always been relatively plot-heavy in comparison with some other "prestige dramas", and each episode is best watched knowing as little as possible going in. I will say that this season is set firmly in the 90s, as the characters find themselves in the ISP market and see the potential in search engines that "index the web". Given the time jump, this season also provides Joanie (Kathryn Newton) and Haley Clark (Susanna Skaggs) with a greater narrative purpose, the teenage daughters of the now divorced Gordon and Donna morphing into well-defined characters in their own right.

To reveal much more would be to ruin some of the magic of watching the show, but just know that the show remains as well written and acted as ever, the performances of the four leads as well as Toby Huss (who, in the role of John Bosworth, has always been a sort of fifth lead) still ranking among the very best on television. The show has also grown more episodically ambitious as it has aged, resulting in a huge chunk of this season's second episode being taken up by a phone call between two characters who not long before absolutely despised each other. It's easily one of the series' dramatic high points.

Like every other season of this show, something is about to go terribly wrong for all these characters, and the first few episodes are full of warning signs. It should be agonizing - and sometimes is - but these characters, no matter what they're doing, are so easy to watch, that the show never stops being an entertaining viewing experience. Given how little time we have left with these people, we should savor that experience while we still can.

AMC announced today that HALT AND CATCH FIRE will begin its fourth and final season with a two-hour premiere on August 19th at 9:00pm ET/PT. The series, created by executive producers and co-showrunners Christopher Cantwell and Christopher C. Rogers, chronicles the tech industry and the birth of the Internet in the 1980s and early 1990s.

The final season of the series will see our cast of characters navigating the early days of the Internet and web browsers, pondering their destinies both personally and professionally, while the competitive nature of the tech world continues to complicate and affect their relationships.

"Six years ago, Chris Cantwell and Chris Rogers shared their vision for 'Halt and Catch Fire' and it has been a privilege to help them bring Halt to life, and to grow alongside them as we all dove into the project," said Charlie Collier, President of AMC, AMC Studios and SundanceTV. "The Chrises, as we affectionately refer to them, are the personification of what so many of us love about our roles at AMC. They are smart, talented, creative people with whom we shared trust, crafting characters and stories that have engaged passionate fans. And, that the stories of Joe, Cameron, Gordon, Donna and Bos also dove deeply into specific creator's journeys only made the experience with Chris and Chris all the more personal and satisfying. I'm thrilled that fans will enjoy a proper conclusion to the HALT AND CATCH FIRE story. Fans will appreciate that, as it turns out, that first pilot script was very much the thing that got us to the thing."

"Six years ago, AMC bet on a passion project and the two untested young guys behind it. As a consequence, we've been allowed to take the creative journey of our lives and tell a story that, over four seasons, became something greater than the sum of its parts," said co-creators and executive producers Christopher Cantwell and Christopher C. Rogers. "At its core, "Halt and Catch Fire" has always been about how people who make things put themselves into the things they create. Alongside our exceptional cast, writing staff, producers and network partners, we couldn't be more excited to share these final ten episodes of this beautiful thing we all made together."

"Halt and Catch Fire" stars Lee Pace as Joe MacMillan, Mackenzie Davis as Cameron Howe, Scoot McNairy as Gordon Clark, Kerry Bishé as Donna Clark and Toby Huss as John Bosworth.

AMC recently announced that actress Anna Chlumsky ("Veep") will be appearing in "Halt and Catch Fire as Dr. Katie Herman, Chief Ontologist--a crucial role in this season's central business ventures.
