04:30 - Succession - Brian Cox, Kieran Culkin, Jeremy Strong, Sarah Snook, Nicholas Braun & Matthew Macfayden Join HBO Family Drama Pilot

HBO has set up its primary family in drama pilot Succession.

Set to star in the project from Adam McKay and Will Ferrell are Brian Cox, Kieran Culkin, Jeremy Strong, Sarah Snook, Nicholas Braun and Matthew Macfayden, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

Succession follows the saga of the Roys, a fictional, American global-media family that is not only rich and powerful but also powerfully dysfunctional. The drama will explore family loyalty, international business and the perils of power in the 21st century.

Cox (Braveheart, The Bourne Supremacy) will topline the project and play Logan Roy, the tough, powerful and aging patriarch of the Roy clan and head of a family-controlled international media conglomerate. The actor is repped by Paradigm.

Strong (Zero Dark Thirty, Masters of Sex) is set to portray Kendall Roy, the eldest son from Logan's second marriage, who currently is a division president at the family firm and the heir apparent. The actor is with WME and Mosaic.

Culkin (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, Igby Goes Down) will play Roman Roy, Logan's outspoken, fun-loving son and Kendall's younger brother. Although still on the board of directors at the firm, he no longer works there. The actor is repped by Paradigm.

Snook (Steve Jobs, Black Mirror) will co-star as Shiv (Sibohan) Roy, Logan's only daughter and younger sister to Kendall and Roman. Like Roman, she sits on the board of directors but does not work at the firm and has been pursuing a career in politics. The actress is with UTA.

Braun (The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Friend Me) joins the drama as Greg, Logan's less-than-competent nephew and a management trainee at one of the firm’s theme parks. The actor is repped by UTA.

Matthew Macfadyen (Anna Karenina, Ripper Street) rounds out the cast as Tom, Shiv’s ambitious partner/fiance and a senior executive at the firm. The actor is with UTA.

Jesse Armstrong will pen the script and executive produce the project. The Big Short's McKay will exec produce and direct the pilot. Ferrell, Kevin Messick, Frank Rich and Ilene S. Landress also will exec produce. Armstrong co-created and co-wrote nine seasons of BAFTA-winning U.K. comedy Peep Show. His credits also include Veep, Four Lions and episodes of Black Mirror. McKay is fresh off a best adapted screenplay Oscar win with co-writer Charles Randolph for The Big Short. Rich, meanwhile, is a creative consultant at HBO and exec produces Emmy darling Veep. Armstrong will serve as showrunner on Succession should the drama be picked up to series.

21:20 - Scorpion - Season 3 - Lea Thompson Cast as Paige's Mother

Scorpion has tapped Lea Thompson to play Paige’s mother, EW has learned exclusively.

The Back to the Future alum will portray Veronica Dineen, an accomplished con artist who comes back into Paige’s (Katharine McPhee) life after years behind bars during the upcoming Thanksgiving-themed episode.

After getting mixed up in a real estate deal gone wrong, some dangerous colleagues are on Veronica’s tail in the wake of her uncovering a secret and a forgotten nuclear reactor. Eager to reconnect with her disapproving daughter and the genius grandson she’s never met, Veronica brings the team a surprising case, but still has a few secrets of her own she’d like to hide. The team is skeptical at first, but soon discover that the nuclear material in the facility is rapidly heating and threatening to explode.

Will Paige be willing to forgive her mother, or let her into the life she’s worked so hard to establish for herself and her son? Either way, viewers will certainly get more insight into Paige with her mother’s arrival. “You don’t really know that much about Paige’s past,” McPhee tells EW. “This season, you’re going to really learn a lot about what her background is and where she came from. It’s good meaty stuff for Paige. You’re going to see a little more aggressive, frustrated, annoyed Paige [continuing] from the first episode — that’s the most angry you’ve seen her in all the seasons. I think you’ll see a continuation of that.”

Thompson, who most recently starred on Switched at Birth, will appear in at least two episodes starting in late November, with the possibility to recur.

Adam Shankman, the helmer behind the musical Hairspray, is in negotiations to direct Disenchanted, the sequel to Disney’s 2007 musically-inclined fantasy that starred Amy Adams.
Adams is expected to return for the sequel, which Disney is hoping to get before cameras in summer 2017, several sources tell The Hollywood Reporter.

Kevin Lima directed the original movie, which tackled the idea of a prototypical Disney princess thrust into the real-world, with songs and true love following.

The movie featured songs by Alan Menken and grossed over $340 million worldwide ($127 million domestically). Disney has been developing a sequel since 2010 and Anne Fletcher was previously attached to direct.

Sources say Disenchanted is set ten years after the first movie, with Giselle finding herself questioning her happily ever after, and accidentally triggering events that make everyone's lives turn upside down in both the real world and in the animated kingdom of Andalasia.

Production began this week in Vancouver on Freeform's latest drama pilot THE DEEP(working title). The series is a one-hour drama that takes us inside Bristol Cove, a coastal town known for its legend of once being home to mermaids. When the arrival of a mysterious girl proves this folklore all too true, the battle between man and sea takes a very VICIOUS turn, as these predatory beings return to reclaim their right to the ocean.

"The Deep" (working title) stars Alex Roe ("The 5th Wave") as Ben, a bright marine biologist who finds himself drawn to a mysterious NEW GIRL in town, Ryn, played by Eline Powell ("Game of Thrones"), who is a strange young woman with a deep dark secret. Fola Evans-Akingbola ("An American Exorcism") stars as Maddie, also a marine biologist who works with Ben and is highly suspicious of Ryn. Ian Verdun ("Life's a Drag") stars as Xander, a deep sea fisherman on a quest to uncover the truth; and Rena Owen ("Star Wars" Episodes II and III) as Helen, the town eccentric who seems to know more about the mermaids than she lets on.

Based on a story by Eric Wald and Dean White, Wald wrote the pilot teleplay and both he and White serve as executive producers. Scott Stewart ("Dominion") is directing. Emily Whitesell ("Finding Carter") is on board as showrunner and executive producer. Brad Luff, Nate Hopper and RD Robb are also attached as executive producers.

03:40 - MOVIES: Gears Of War - Film Based On Video Game Series in Development at Universal

During a livestream for the release of the latest installment in the long-running sci-fi shooter video game franchise, Microsoft today confirmed that a film based on the Gears Of War is in development with the rights optioned by Universal. Scott Stuber (Ted series, Central Intelligence) and Dylan Clark (Planet of the Apes series, Oblivion) are set to produce through their Universal-based Bluegrass Films. No director or screenwriter is attached to the project, nor were any details about the project provided. However, Rod Fergusson, head of Microsoft subsidiary The Coalition that develops new Gears of War content and franchise co-creator, said today that the film would not be based on any particular game but would instead be a new story set in the universe.

Set on the fictional planet of Sera, the series follows a squad of beefed up commandos living in a bombed out post-apocalyptic society who battle swarms of alien creatures called Locusts. The first game, released in 2006, has spawned three proper sequels including the just-released Gears Of War 4, as well as a side-story, Gears of War: Judgment. Developed by Epic games, Microsoft acquired the franchise in 2014. The series has grossed $1 billion in grosses since 2007.

It’s the second time a Gears of War film has been in development. The first, announced in 2007, was to come from New Line with director Len Wiseman signing aboard in 2008. Production on that film fell apart in 2010.

In Monsters of God, written and to be directed by Lurie, savagery and violence are the cornerstones of Colonel “Terrible” Bill Lancaster’s (Dillahunt) holy war against the Comanche in post-Civil War Texas. Despite the peaceful co-existence between the Comanche and local townspeople, Lancaster sets out on a quest to kill off every single member of the tribe, bringing wild chaos to the town of Slater. Meanwhile, his wife, Cynthia Lancaster, will let no one get in the way of her obsessive quest to institute her wildly feminist ideals, even if she has to challenge the United States Army and make her own allegiance with the Comanche women. Whether by force or free will, change is coming to Texas, and the escalating insanity will reveal humanity at its most monstrous.

Healy will play Sergeant Major Wit Reynolds, a barbarous and power hungry U.S. Army NCO who works directly with Colonel Lancaster and is one of the few at Fort Thayer to agree with his desire to exterminate the Comanche tribe. Ruthless in his own way, Reynolds makes his power known, even standing up to the Colonel when Lancaster steps out of bounds. He has a taste for alcohol and women, and no time for underlings. He has spent his entire career working for Lancaster.
Irish actor Killian Scott (Ripper Street) has signed on to star in the drama pilot in the role formerly belonging to Rectify star Aden Young, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

Described as "an epic saga of the secret history of the 1930s American heartland," Damnation centers on the struggle between big money and the downtrodden, God and greed, charlatans and prophets during the Depression. The pilot centers on Seth Davenport, a man pretending to be a small-town Iowa preacher in the hopes of starting a full-blown insurrection against the status quo. Focused on his mission, he is unaware that an industrialist tycoon has hired a professional strikebreaker named Creeley Turner to stop the uprising by whatever means necessary. Unbeknownst to those around them, these two men already share a secret bloody past.

Scott will portray Davenport, a man with a violent past and a secret ambition to lead a revolution against American industrialists. He replaces Young who abruptly exited the pilot days before production was set to begin on Oct. 3. Scott began work on the show Tuesday.

20:05 - Brooklyn Nine-Nine - TBS Secures Syndication Rights

Thanks to everyone who sent this in.

EXCLUSIVE: TBS has closed a deal with NBCUniversal for the cable syndication rights to the first five seasons of Brooklyn Nine-Nine. The pact, which starts in 2017, includes exclusive linear rights as well as associated on-demand tights, including rolling episodes on TV Everywhere. Brooklyn Nine-Nine just kicked off its fourth season on Fox, so the Season 5 component of the deal is contingent on the show being renewed for next season.

No one would comment on the price, though industry sources estimate it to be around or under $500,000 an episode. The exclusive SVOD rights to previous seasons of Brooklyn Nine-Nine were sold to Hulu in 2014 as part of a multi-series deal between NBCU and the streaming service. The TBS deal gives the cable network exclusive rights against all linear exhibition of out-of-season episodes of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, including against broadcast syndication.

TBS always had been considered the likely cable home for Brooklyn Nine-Nine. In his previous job running Fox, TNT and TBS president Kevin Reilly developed and greenlighted Brooklyn Nine-Nine, which had been a passion project for him. The cop comedy starring Andy Samberg also fits into TBS’ new direction with original programming for distinctive single-camera comedies that are digital and socially driven.
