04:20 - Scalped - Lily Gladstone to Star in WGN America’s DC Comics Pilot

Casting has officially begun on the project that was ordered to pilot nearly a year ago — Lily Gladstone has landed the first series regular role, Variety has learned exclusively.

Based on the western crime comics that were published by DC’s Vertigo imprint in 2007, “Scalped” is described as a modern-day crime story set in the world of a Native American reservation. The project explores power, loyalty, and spirituality in a community led by the ambitious Chief Lincoln Red Crow as he reckons with Dashiell Bad Horse, who has returned home after years away from the reservation.

Gladstone will play Carol Red Crow, the estranged daughter of Chief Red Crow. The former “Rez Princess,” tragic circumstances set her against her father and down a self-destructive spiral meant to punish him as much as herself. Fiercely independent and intelligent, Carol gradually comes to discover the influence she can play on the Rez’s future.

Insiders say that WGN America is looking to find a cast predominately made up of Native American actors for the pilot. Gladstone is Native American, and her great, great grandfather was Red Crow. She grew up in the reservations for the early part of her childhood.
03:20 - Disjointed - Chris Redd Joins Netflix’s Pot-Themed Comedy Series
Thanks to Jovan for the heads up.

Chris Redd (Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping) has been cast as a series regular opposite Kathy Bates in Disjointed, Netflix’s pot-themed multi-camera workplace comedy from Chuck Lorre, former Daily Show head writer David Javerbaum and Warner Bros TV.

Written and executive produced by Lorre and Javerbaum, Disjointed stars Bates as Ruth, a lifelong advocate for legalization who’s finally living her dream as the owner of an L.A.-area cannabis dispensary. Joining her are three budtenders, her twentysomething son and a deeply troubled security guard. All of them are more or less constantly high. Redd will play Dank, a stoner who is a regular customer at the dispensary.
22:40 - The Machine - Bridger Zadina, Malachi Kirby and Olly Rix Join Syfy's AI Pilot

Syfy's The Machine reboot is adding to its ensemble. Bridger Zadina (Better Things), Roots grad Malachi Kirby and Olly Rix (Of Kings and Prophets) have signed on for series regular roles, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

Based on the 2013 film, The Machine is set in a world that is being transformed by the emergence of artificial intelligence and explores the epic conflict between man and technology through the lives and motivations of six interwoven characters — each of whom holds the key to humanity’s victory or its destruction.

Zadina will play Santiago, an agoraphobic young hacker who — after uncovering the dangerous truth behind those he believed to be his allies — is cast out into the world he desperately fears. Through his harrowing fight for survival, Santiago begins to emerge as one of humanity's last great hopes in the coming war against rising artificial intelligence.

Kirby is set to play Aaron, a lonely and out-of-place young man who created an A.I. as his best friend — benevolent, brilliant, supportive, and in many ways, his equal. Then recruited by the CIA for his creation, Aaron was placed in their cyber-warfare division. When the government used his work to spearhead a devastating cyberattack, Aaron was forced to destroy his creation and flee. Now in need of resources and money to rebuild, Aaron seeks a trustworthy partner that can fund the re-creation of his A.I. and save humanity, not destroy it.

Rix will portray James, the principal test subject of a secret Ministry of Defense Artificial Intelligence program. A soldier, his badly injured mind and body have been rebuilt using cutting-edge prosthetics and implanted artificial intelligence, elevating him far beyond the limits of normal human capabilities. As James becomes a pivotal player in the looming rise of artificial intelligence, how much humanity remains within him is still unclear. If James is a savior or destroyer is unclear, but the fate of our world may rest in his hands.
06:30 - Power Rangers - Dark Reboot in Development for TV

The showrunner on Netflix’s new Castlevania series, Adi Shankar, is working on an R-rated reboot of Power Rangers series from the ‘90s.

During an interview with Polygon, Shankar said his next big project was a Power Rangers meets Dragon Ball Z type series that would reimagine the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers series that ran between 1993 and 1999. The show would be an animated series and Shankar said it would be the most violent version of the show to date.

“It’s a complete retelling of the first three seasons,” Shankar said. “And it’s going to be really fucking dark. Darker than any other Power Rangers series.”

Shankar is already working on the script for the first season and wants to launch the series within the next 18 months, but has yet to sell the series to a network. When asked if there were any potential suitors, Shankar said there were a couple of networks interested but he wanted to bring the show to Netflix. Shankar is currently working with the internet network on the recently announced Castlevania.
Former lovebirds Penny and Kady will run into Matlin’s character in their search for an important library book, which, as the exclusive image above shows, neither of them expected to happen. 19:50 - Trollhunters - Renewed for a 2nd Season by Netflix

Trollhunters comes from Guillermo del Toro and marks both a first for the filmmaker — a bingeable creation for Netflix — and a return to form by way of a long-standing history with DreamWorks Animation, where Del Toro cut his teeth in the medium. EW can exclusively reveal that, following the successful run of the first 26 episodes, a second season of 13 episodes will arrive later this year, with production already long underway for season 2.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: It seems like you have some news to share.

GUILLERMO DEL TORO: Well, we got very good news about how many people were watching the series, but we got confirmation that the next [13] episodes are a go. We’ve been working on a second season for a while now because we knew that if everything went right, we could proceed. We’re going to go ahead and now continue, rather than start, because we’ve been doing it for more than a year. The reality and the beauty of this is that we can continue not only the storyline and the characters, but we have a huge swath of work from Anton that allows us to continue Anton through more than half the season.

How did you approach the show following the loss of Anton?

From the get-go, even in the first season, we knew we wanted to preserve as much of the performance of Anton as possible, both from an artistic and a human point of view, and also simply because I think it’s a tribute to what we think he brings to the role of Jim. From the beginning when we planned the writers’ room, we set out a map of 52 episodes, and created arcs that break every 13, and those were planned four years ago. So we have been recording Kelsey Grammer, Anton, Ron Perlman, Clancy Brown, everybody involved in the series for years and years. And there was a break in the arc in the right episode that allows us to preserve all the work that Anton did that was phenomenal. At the end of recording sessions, Anton did one of the most complex episodes and then he looked at the pilot, complete, and there was a great moment in which he was able to see the work and do a really complicated episode in which he did multiple voices and we were all so proud and so close when we lost him. And now I can tell you, we’re not only going to second season, but we’re going to be able to preserve a really large part of it with Anton’s voice.
04:10 - Castlevania - Given 2 Season Order at Netflix

Part 1 of the Castlevania TV show’s first season will be arriving this year, indicating that similar to other Netflix series like The Crown, Castlevania has been automatically greenlit for at least two seasons (or a first season to be released in two separate chunks). The Belmont family will definitely be making their streaming debut later this year – although likely not in October, when Stranger Things season 2 arrives – and aiming to dominate in all of their vampire-slaying glory.

As noted by io9, the Castlevania TV series is most likely being developed by Adventure Time‘s Frederator Network (who teased his involvement near the end of 2016) and produced by Adi Shankar – known for his Power Rangers fan film that garnered a lot of attention in 2015. Shankar had previously written about his involvement on Castlevania along with Fred Seibert on Facebook with the timestamp “about a year ago”:

“Breaking News: I’m producing a super violent Castlevania mini-series with my homies Fred Seibert and Kevin Klonde. It’s going to be dark, satirical, and after a decade of propaganda it will flip the vampire sub-genre on its head.”

It will be interesting to see if this show focuses on characters featured in Castlevania video games past or a new generation of vampire hunters unique to the series.
Boone will play Jerrika, Brandon’s (Mitchell) outspoken partner in life. Although she struggles with his mother for acceptance as his girlfriend, she also is wise and helpful in navigating Brandon’s path. A restaurant manager herself, in tough times she works hard to keep Brandon away from street justice and on his own road to being a chef.

Hibbert portrays Kevin, who is street-smart and confident and focuses on the things important to a 13-year-old. He’s infatuated with a girl in his class, has a close group of neighborhood friends and dreams of getting out of the South Side. Unfortunately, being at the wrong place at the wrong time puts him at the scene of a murder, and now Kevin has a new kind of fear — for his life.
05:00 - MOVIES: Friday the 13th - Reboot Axed by Paramount

Paramount has decided to back off on its reboot of the iconic “Friday the 13th” horror franchise, which had been in development for several years at the studio.

Paramount announced Monday that it had pulled “Friday the 13th” from its Oct. 13 release date and filled the slot with the Jennifer Lawrence movie “mother!,” but gave no further explanation. Several sources told Variety that Paramount has put the project on ice for several reasons — its $21 million budget; the disappointing $13 million opening weekend for its “Rings” horror reboot; and the looming reversion of the rights to New Line.
During the Chicago Justice portion of the crossover, Whitford will portray Albert Forest, a high-powered defense attorney who literally wrote the book on cross-examination.
We’ve been jazzed about the Season 1 debut of Mary Kills People since we visited the set a few months ago. Now, not only has Global revealed the drama series debuts Wednesday, Jan. 25, at 9 p.m. ET/PT, but they’ve released a handful of images too.

Executive-produced by Tassie Cameron, Amy Cameron, Tecca Crosby and Holly Dale and co-executive producer Tara Armstrong, Global describes the series thusly:

Set in the morally grey world of assisted suicide, Mary Kills People is an intense, controversial, and thought-provoking drama. The series follows Dr. Mary Harris (Caroline Dhavernas), a single mother and emergency doctor by day, who also moonlights as an underground angel of death — helping terminally ill patients who want to die and slip away on their own terms. So far Mary has managed to stay under the radar; but business is booming, and her double life is getting complicated. When her world starts to unravel, Mary realizes she’s going to have to fight dirty if she’s going to stay in the killing game.

Additional cast includes Jay Ryan as Joel, one of Mary’s terminally ill clients; Richard Short as Des, Mary’s trusted partner in crime; Lyriq Bent as Frank, Joel’s friend; Greg Bryk as Grady, Mary’s drug supplier; Abigail Winters as Mary’s teen daughter; and Charlotte Sullivan as Nicole, Mary’s concerned sister.

23:10 - Good Girls Revolt - ABC, Freeform, USA Network, Bravo and Hulu in the Running to Pick Up The Cancelled Amazon Series

Thanks to Millie for the heads up.

Days after Amazon unceremoniously canceled period drama Good Girls Revolt, producers Sony Pictures Television appear to be honing in on finding a new home for the series.

Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that ABC, Freeform, USA Network, Bravo and Hulu are in the running to pick up the Dana Calvo created drama for a second season, with Netflix and Lifetime both considered longshots. Sony Pictures Television declined comment.

Streaming platform and retail outlet Amazon canceled the feminist-themed period drama on Friday in what was seen as a surprising move that came a month after its Oct. 28 premiere. It marked a rare one-and-done drama on a streaming platform, where ratings are not part of the equation.

Sony Pictures Television, whose TriStar Television banner was behind the 10-episode series, has until Dec. 31 — when the cast options expire — to find a new home for Good Girls Revolt. Although given the upcoming holiday break, an extension on the cast options is not considered unlikely. Good Girls Revolt will maintain its spot in the California Film Commission's tax incentive program should it find a new home.

Sources said Amazon Studios head Roy Price was not a fan of the series and didn't deem it to be an awards season player in opting to pass on ordering a second season after hearing Sony's season two pitch last week.

"Based on data provided to us from Sony, Symphony Advanced Media reported our show was a hit, and we have loyal viewers," Calvo told BuzzFeed hours after the news of Good Girls Revolt's cancellation broke, though Amazon — like Netflix — discounts the streaming monitor's findings. "Eighty percent of people who watched the first few minutes of the pilot stayed until the last minutes of the finale. We had twice Transparent's audience. We were stunned by Amazon's decision, but heartened and encouraged by Sony's devotion to the project."

20:15 - MOVIES: Barbie - Amy Schumer to Star as Barbie in Sony's Life Action Adaptation

EXCLUSIVE: Amy Schumer will play the title role in Barbie, the live action Sony Pictures film based on the venerable Mattel toyline. The PG movie will begin production in the spring for a global summer 2018 tent pole bow, after Schumer puts her imprint on the script by Hillary Winston. Given her edgy stand up comedy and her movie breakthrough writing and starring in the R-rated Trainwreck, what makes Schumer the right actress to play the embodiment of a beloved toyline that for years featured a doll with impossibly perfect physical proportions? Aside from the fact that she has Barbie hair, Schumer’s growing stature as a role model for female empowerment fits perfectly with how the film will exploit Barbie’s evolution into dolls of different sizes and shapes.

Schumer will play a character who lives in Barbieland, among all of the various Barbie characters beloved by collectors. In a fish out of water story reminiscent of films like Splash and Big, she gets kicked out, basically because she’s not perfect enough and is a bit eccentric. She then goes on an adventure in the real world and by the time she returns to Barbieland to save it, she has gained the realization that perfection comes on the inside, not the outside, and that the key to happiness is belief in one self, free of trying to adhere to some unattainable standard of perfection. Mattel, with a lot at stake since the toyline has generated $3 billion in sales, signed off on the take.

While Sony, and the film’s producers — Walter Parkes & Lori MacDonald (who won the rights from the toymaker in 2014), and Amy Pascal (who bought the project as Sony Pictures chairman before joining as producer) worked on numerous drafts by top female writers for several years, this one came together like a bolt from the blue after Winston and the producers cracked the code with a funny empowerment take that sparked the interest of Schumer and made her want to fit into her crowded movie schedule. Sony chief Tom Rothman brought the script to Schumer personally, and pitched the take to her. After she read Winston’s script, Schumer emailed that she was in. A deal is now being finalized.

The studio will now lock in a director, and the intention is that the filmmaker be a woman. Word around Hollywood is there is a short list of directors including Me Before You helmer Thea Sharrock (who is apparently unavailable for the slot), but its a big job and the studio expects to fill it shortly

The cancellation of Good Girls Revolt is somewhat surprising as it launched to solid reviews and ranked as one of Amazon’s biggest series ever among female viewers. For streaming services, which depend on attracting subscribers, over-indexing in key demographics, like women, is important. (About 67% of Good Girls Revolt‘s viewers are said to be female.)

I hear in Women 18-49, Good Girls Revolt delivered the second biggest debut season for an Amazon original series only behind flagship drama Man In the High Castle and its completion rate in the female demo was 80%.
19:00 - Full(er) House Creator Jeff Franklin buys the original Tanner House in San Francisco

The Tanner House is back in the Full House fold.

Veteran TV producer Jeff Franklin — creator of the beloved long-running Full House — has purchased the iconic San Francisco property where the Tanner family "lived," located in the city's Lower Pacific Heights neighborhood at 1709 Broderick St. The house went on the market in May with a price tag of $4.15 million and Franklin snapped it up in a deal that closed this fall, paying right around $4 million.

Built in 1883, the Charles Lewis Hinkel home is noted for its Italianate, Victorian architecture and was handpicked by Franklin nearly 30 years ago to serve as the Tanner household in stock shots featuring the outside of the home. Inside, the nearly 2500 sq. ft. includes four bedrooms and four bathrooms. Despite a recent redesign that some realtors described as "sophisticated," Franklin is planning to redo the interiors to match its sitcom heritage, making it appear as if the Tanner family really lives there.

"The house came on the market and really, I just thought, I have to buy this house," Franklin told The Hollywood Reporter during a telephone interview from San Francisco on Wednesday afternoon. "I'm so sentimental about the house. It's great to have the house in our Full House family and be able to preserve it for the fans. … Seriously, I love owning this house."

Another thing he loves: The property now has a red door once again. The previous owners painted it a seafoam green color, but Franklin made the change one of his first orders of new homeowner business, a detail that will surely please fans — many of which still flock there on a daily basis for photo ops. "There are probably 250 fans per day that show up and take a picture in front of it," Franklin noted. "It will be a lot more fun for the fans because now the house will look like the Tanners really live there. It's a gift to the fans but it's also fun for me to own it."

But they better hurry because the red door will take a temporary hiatus. "I need to do some construction work on the inside, and do a seismic retrofit so the building is safe. It still has the original, brick foundation from 1883, and the whole house needs to be brought up to code," Franklin explained. "That will probably be six months of construction and during that time, the red door will not be there because I don't want it to get ruined."

Thanks to Mkone for the heads up.

There hasn’t been a single ruling in MGM’s copyright lawsuit for a Buckaroo Banzai TV series, but there’s already two clear casualties: Kevin Smith and the show itself, at least for now. After the studio filed legal paperwork November 23 against the 1984 movie’s director W.D. Richter and writer Earl Mac Rauch, the Clerks creator went online today to declare “I’m no longer involved” with the proposed Amazon TV series version.

“This is not what I signed up for,” Smith said of the legal issues while praising MGM in other respects (watch the video below). “I was caught off-guard [by the lawsuit]. I literally had no idea. It blows, man, because that’s the closest I’ve [come] to having my own show so far.”

Additionally, Deadline has learned that with this pronouncement by Smith and MGM’s moves in the courts, the project is in limbo at Amazon until the legal matters are resolved. When contacted by Deadline, Amazon had no comment on the series or the lawsuit.

After a search that began in the spring and extended into the summer, Pitch Perfect 3 has landed a director: Trish Sie.
The search was necessitated when Elizabeth Banks, one of the producers of the music-themed franchise, backed out of directing the third installment after making a hit directorial debut with Pitch Perfect 2.

Universal and Gold Circle, the companies behind the movies, and the producers then launched an immediate hunt for a replacement. Jason Moore, who directed the first movie, was approached but unavailable, clearing the way for a wide open search.

Sie has only directed one film but it was key to getting the job: Step Up All In, the fifth installment of dance-themed franchise. Sie is also a choreographer and helped conceive and direct hit videos for Ok Go, including the recent viral hit "Upside Down & Inside Out", which was shot in zero gravity as well as the band's breakout video, known as the treadmill video, for the song "Here it Goes Again." (Fun fact: Sie is the brother of Ok Go frontman Damian Kulash.)

Pitch 3 has been taking a bit longer to develop than the filmmakers were planning and the movie was recently moved from a July 21, 2017, release to Dec. 22, 2017. Mike White penned a new draft this part summer.

USA Network has found the stars of its next drama pilot.

Masters of Sex alum Colin Woodell, Glee grad Erinn Westbrook, Ginny Gardner (Project Almanac) and David Corenswet (Public Affairs) will headline the cabler's period drama The Tap, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

The Tap is set at Yale University circa 1969, during the height of America's cultural and political revolution – a time when the campus is being upended by antiwar protests, race riots and the arrival of the first female students. In the midst of this, three students struggle to find their true identities.

Woodell will play Jay Butler, an ambitious and highly intelligent student looking to secure his future by joining Skull and Bones. Although he doesn’t have the pedigree of his classmates, he will do whatever it takes to escape his past. Woodell will next be seen in ABC's Kiefer Sutherland drama Designated Survivor and the upcoming indie Last Days of Summer. He is repped by Innovative Artists.

Westbrook will portray Gloria Murphy, one of Yale's first female students and one of the few black students in her class. She was raised in the impoverished city of New Haven and, if she had it her way, she’d skip undergrad and go straight to law school so she could fight to change the system from within. Westbrook, whose other credits include Awkward and Jane the Virgin, is repped by APA, Treadwell Entertainment Group and Myman Greenspan.

Gardner is set as Michelle Cuttriss who is also apart of Yale's inaugural female class. Disgusted and unnerved by the distressing reception she receives on campus; she decides to let everyone know just how unprepared Yale is for her. Her roles include the indies Project Almanac and Goat. She is repped by UTA, 3 Arts Entertainment and Sloan Offer.

Corenswet rounds out the cast as Kirk Lewis, a blue-blooded Skull and Bones legacy whose transformation from WASP prince to hippie warrior will raise more than a few eyebrows back home. The actor, who currently stars in Public Affairs, is repped by ICM Partners, Untitled Entertainment and Jackoway Tyerman.

Additionally, Simon Cellan Jones (Boardwalk Empire, Treme) has come onboard to direct the pilot after having recently directed an episode of the NBCUniversal cabler's twice-delayed Shooter remake. Rob Reiner was originally attached to helm when The Tap was first put into development at USA in April 2015.

EXCLUSIVE: Karen Gillan has landed a major role in Sony’s remake of Jumanji, the Jake Kasdan-directed pic that toplines Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black and Nick Jonas. It’s the final piece of the casting puzzle for the pic, which now is set to kick off principal photography next month in Honolulu.

The Scotland-born Gillan will play Martha, ending what was a months-long search for the coveted role that involved some serious A-list talent. She meshed best with the cast and won out. It’s the latest big get for Gillan, the onetime Doctor Who regular and Selfie star who has scored film roles in the likes of Guardians of the Galaxy and the upcoming The Circle.

Sony has set a July 28 release date for Jumanji, which Matt Tolmach is producing with William Teitler. Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner wrote the most recent version of the script, based on draft by original writers Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers. It’s all based on the book by Chris Van Allsburg that became a 1995 movie starring Robin Williams that grossed $260 million globally.

Thanks to Bazooka for the heads up.

Friday's fire caused damages of $4 million-plus, according to Czech media. Production on History's U.S.-Czech television series Knightfall will continue at another location in Prague after a fire on Friday heavily damaged a set built at local studio Barrandov.

Producers of the series have yet to decide whether to rebuild the set, while shooting is scheduled to resume at another location in the city, Czech TV network Nova reported.

The area damaged by the fire remains cordoned off while investigators work there, according to the report. Only a small part of the set, representing a medieval city, was saved. The fire, which broke out at around 7 p.m. local time on Friday, was completely extinguished by 7 a.m. the next morning. Damages are roughly estimated at 100 million Czech crowns ($4.1 million), Nova reported.

The fire will have an impact on the production schedule of Knightfall, but the shoot will not be moved to another city and will focus on street locations for the time being, local film news web site Kinobox.cz reported, quoting Barrandov studio's management.

A spokesman for A+E, History's parent company, told The Hollywood Reporter that the Knightfall production remains in Prague and resumed on Monday.

"There is no discussion about relocation," he added.

David Minkowski, a senior producer at Stillking Films, a local partner on Knightfall, also confirmed to THR that filming had resumed.

"In conjunction with our insurers and Barrandov construction, we are planning to rebuild the destroyed backlot set as soon as possible and complete filming in Czech Republic," he added.

The 10-episode drama, which counts Jeremy Renner as an executive producer and a guest star, was ordered to series in January. It is part of the cable network's continued scripted push, following the success of Vikings.

Enough about a possible Jack Bauer cameo. What we really want to know is if 24: Legacy will carve out a few minutes for Chloe?
“We have plans,” executive producer Evan Katz told TVLine in the below video when asked point-blank about Mary Lynn Rajskub‘s beloved tech goddess possibly making an appearance in the forthcoming Fox reboot. “Right now, our clear priority is [establishing] these new characters, and have the audience build a relationship with them. But we have some surprises planned.”

24: Legacy centers on a former Army Ranger (played by The Walking Dead‘s Corey Hawkins) who, upon returning to the U.S., turns to the CTU for help in saving his life. “The premise of the season is based on a real story about the guys who took out Osama bin Laden,” explains fellow EP Manny Coto. “It struck us as a fascinating [introduction] for a character who participated in a huge mission to take out a terrorist leader and then had to go back to his normal life. Asked at the Television Critics Association’s press tour about the future of Scandal, Dungey was quick to defend the Shonda Rhimes political fixer drama. “It was the fifth season this year,” Dungey said. “Long-running shows, there’s always a little bit of ebb and flow.
18:55 - ABC Drops #TGIT Tagline for Fall

Thanks to Andrew for the heads up.
This was previously already posted in the TCA Liveblog.

#TGIT will be MIA on ABC this fall.

Making her first appearance at the Television Critics Association press tour as president of ABC Entertainment, Channing Dungey confirmed — just as TVLine surmised in May — that the network is dropping the three-year-old tagline used to market its Thursday lineup, now that one of of dramas isn’t a Shonda Rhimes production.

Dungey told TVLine that because the #TGIT marketing strategy is associated “in particular” with Scandal — which won’t uncork Season 6 until midseason — “it did feel like it would make more sense to wait to bring #TGIT back” when Olivia Pope & Co. return to our screens in January 2017.

Rhimes had strongly suggested in May that a lineup with a non-Shondaland show in the mix does not qualify as #TGIT, by tweeting after the Grey’s and Catch finales, “This is the final night for #TGIT until 2017! See you for #GreysAnatomy and #HTGAWM in the fall!” The prolific producer reiterated her point with a second tweet: “#TGIT returns with #GreysAnatomy #Scandal and #TheCatch next year! #Shondaland.”

Responding to Rhimes’ aforementioned stance at TCA on Thursday, Dungey acknowledged the producer “does have a pretty clear sense of what it takes to schedule a network.”

NEW YORK — July 29, 2016 — Vice President Joe Biden will guest star on the second episode of the new season of NBC’s “Law & Order: SVU,” set to air Wednesday, Sept. 28 (9-10 p.m. ET/PT).

The Vice President will appear as himself in a press conference scene where he commends the SVU, led by Lt. Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay), for their work in addressing the national rape kit backlog, specifically in the city of Detroit.

The issue reflects the real-life efforts of Biden and series star Hargitay, who both recently spoke at the United State of Women Summit at the White House in June to address the national backlog of untested rape kits, and the pervasive culture of violence and sexual assault against women. The Vice President was also honored by Hargitay’s Joyful Heart Foundation last May for his commitment to ending domestic violence and sexual assault.

New statistics released today by the Wayne County Prosecutor's office reflect the success of County Prosecutor Kym Worthy, Manhattan District Attorney Cy Vance, Biden and Hargitay's advocacy efforts. Of the 11,341 rape kits found in Detroit, nearly 10,000 have now been tested, resulting in 2,616 hits in the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS), 762 suspected serial rapists identified impacting 40 states and 50 convictions.

The 18th season of “Law & Order: SVU” premieres Wednesday, Sep. 21 on NBC.

Sony has recruited Joe Carnahan to write the latest draft of the script for its adaptation of the popular video game “Uncharted.”

Carnahan, who is also an accomplished director and producer, told Variety that he’s unable to also helm, unless production is pushed back, due to schedule constraints. “Bad Boys 3” will be his next directing gig. Production on the sequel gears up early next year — after Will Smith wraps David Ayer’s “Bright.”

“In a perfect world I would love to do both, but right now, I’m only on board to write the script,” he said.

“Uncharted” is an action-adventure film based on the critically-acclaimed and top-selling PlayStation video game series, which follows the adventures of treasure hunter Nathan Drake.

Carnahan said entering the world of Nathan Drake is a dream come true.

“Archaeology today is in itself an antiquity, but that world has always fascinated me. Especially when you go to a museum today and wonder how a piece got there to begin with,” he said. “Plus, the property itself is so popular that it was hard to turn down an opportunity to work on it.”

00:25 - MOVIES: Jekyll - Chris Evans Circling Lead Role in Lionsgate's Movie Adaptation

EXCLUSIVE: Chris Evans might be diversifying from his Captain America good guy persona. Evans has come attached to play the lead role of Tom Jackman in Jekyll, the feature that Lionsgate is developing from the 2007 BBC One series. Ellen DeGeneres and Jeff Kleeman are producing through their A Very Good Production banner and scribe team Anthony Bagarozzi & Charles Mondry have written a script based on the Steven Moffatt-scripted six episode miniseries. Bagarozzi & Mondry teamed on the Shane Black-directed The Nice Guys and Doc Savage, as well as the remake of Death Note. No director, yet.

This creates a potential collision course between projects sourced from the Robert Louis Stevenson public domain novel about the doctor with the split personality. Universal’s classic monsters franchises set Russell Crowe to play the dual personality doc, first in The Mummy opposite Tom Cruise, and presumably as a standalone in a later film. The BBC miniseries wasn’t a straight adaptation of the Stevenson novella; rather, the lit classic was a jumping off point for a sequel. In the miniseries, James Nesbitt played Jackman, a modern day descent of Jekyll who is beginning to exhibit the trademark split personality. The father and husband abandons his family, without explaining why, and lives in a fortified basement with a psychiatric nurse his ally. When they strap the doctor to a metal chair, she watches him transform into an alter ego who rages, shows heightened strength and speed, and can be a charming flirtatious scoundrel as well. The two personalities try to coexist, even though one doesn’t remember what the other does while in control of the body. They use a micro cassette to leave messages for each other. Unable to stay away from the family he left behind for their own safety, he visits his wife, Hyde assumes control and learns about them, and things grow very complicated.

It’s been another very late start to the broadcast network buying season. In one of the higher-profile comedy deals so far, ABC has given a script with penalty commitment to Losing It, a single-camera family comedy from Growing Up Fisher and Truth Be Told creator DJ Nash.

Nash is executive producing the project with Aaron Kaplan from Kapital Entertainment. The comedy is set at ABC sibling ABC Studios. Nash moves to ABC Studios after a five-year stint at Universal TV where he had two back-to-back overall deals and created and executive produced two comedy projects based on personal experiences that went to series, Growing Up Fisher and Truth Be Told.

Written by Nash, Losing It is about three misfit adult siblings and their parents who — between divorce, new parenthood, early-onset dementia and let’s just say life — are all losing it in different ways. And family is the only way they’re going to find it.

21:00 - MOVIES: The Rocketeer - Reboot in Development at Disney

The Rocketeer is ready to blast off once again.

Walt Disney Studios is developing a reboot of the 1991 action adventure movie, hiring Max Winkler and Matt Spicer to pen the script, which is being titled The Rocketeers.

The project, in the early development stages, is considered a sequel-reboot and, in a modern-day twist, will be headlined by a black female character.

Brigham Taylor, who produced The Jungle Book with Jon Favreau, is producing along with Blake Griffin of the L.A. Clippers and Ryan Kalil of the Carolina Panthers. Griffin and Kalil are partners in a new venture called Mortal Media and approached Taylor with the idea for the reboot.

Rocketeer was based on the popular 1980s indie comic by Dave Stevens and, like Star Wars and Raiders of the Lost Ark, was a loving homage to the serials of the 1930s and 1940s.

The story followed Cliff Secord, a stunt pilot who discovers a rocket pack and suit to die for and become embroiled with mobsters and Nazis, as well as Howard Hughes and the FBI.

The Joe Johnston-directed movie starred Billy Campbell as Secord, Jennifer Connelly as his aspiring actress (a Betty Page homage) girlfriend, Timothy Dalton as an Errol Flynn-type actor who is a Nazi spy and Alan Arkin as Secord's mechanic.

When the movie was released, it grossed only $46.6 million and came in fourth in its opening weekend (it was pummeled by Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, City Slickers and Dying Young). Its performance was considered a disappointment by the studio and its creative team.

But a rare thing happened: The movie took on a life of its own, engendering a massive following who loved its un-ironic, bright and straightforwardly heroic take on characters, all abetted by a score by James Horner.

When Disney hosted a 20th anniversary screening of the movie in Hollywood's El Capitan Theatre in 2011, fans — many in Rocketeer costumes — lined up for blocks.

It was around that time that the studio began mulling a reboot of the movie, but sources said it sought a way to differentiate it from another rocket-propelled flying hero: Iron Man.

The new take keeps the story in a period setting and offers a fresh view on the characters. Set six years after the original Rocketeer and after Secord has vanished while fighting the Nazis, an unlikely new hero emerges: a young African–American female pilot, who takes up the mantle of Rocketeer in an attempt to stop an ambitious and corrupt rocket scientist from stealing jet-pack technology in what could prove to be a turning point in the Cold War.

Tendo Nagenda and Chaz Salembier are overseeing the project for Disney.

Winkler, the son of Fonzie actor Henry Winkler, wrote and directed the 2010 indie comedy The Ceremony, which starred Michael Angarano and Uma Thurman. He has also directed episodes of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and New Girl.
EW has confirmed that Jonas is in talks to join Sony’s upcoming Jumanji reboot, alongside Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, and Kevin Hart. Character details have yet to be revealed, but Jonas would join the cast in the role of “Alex.”

The project is billed as a new take on Chris Van Allsburg’s beloved children’s book, which, of course, was previously adapted in 1995 with Robin Williams in the lead role. Johnson has called his Jumanji “a new re-imagining of this amazing story,” and he has said that the new script honors Williams and his character, Alan Parrish.

After being shopped to broadcast networks and streaming services, Netflix has landed Disjointed with a 20-episode order and tapped Kathy Bates to star, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

Co-written by Lorre and David Javerbaum (The Daily Show), the spec script went out into the marketplace in mid-January. The workplace comedy stars three-time Oscar nominee and two-time Emmy winner Bates as a lifelong advocate for marijuana legalization who’s finally living her dream as the owner of an L.A.-area cannabis dispensary. Joining her are three "budtenders," her twenty-something son and a deeply troubled security guard. All of them are more or less constantly high.

Pot comedies have been in high demand across broadcast, cable, premium and streaming outlets of late. Amazon recently tapped Margaret Cho to star in Highland, HBO picked up six episodes of High Maintenance and NBC is teaming with Adam and Naomi Scott to develop Buds.

The multicamera comedy hails from Warner Bros. Television, where the prolific producer behind CBS' The Big Bang Theory and Mom is under a rich overall deal. The news comes as Lorre's CBS' comedy Mike & Molly wrapped its its sixth and final season and with Lorre's Big Bang Theory and Mom both set to return next season. Mom, coincidentally, was also taken out late in the season as a pitch and scored a hefty pilot production commitment.
