In the Dirty John finale, Betty must face the consequences of her actions, the killing of her ex-husband and his new wife. Except, for Betty, in this, she will also be forced to face truths she’s never allowed herself to see in the years prior: her divorce, the way she’s hurt her kids, and her willful ignorance of the latter. In the end, though, does she actually face the truths, or does she just discuss them on the stand?

After last week’s episode aired, I decided to go ahead and buy the book “Until the Twelfth of Never” by Bella Stumbo, and after receiving it and skimming through it, I have a newfound love for Dirty John. I know what you’re thinking: here we go again, she’s going to talk about how good Dirty John and Amanda Peet are for three straight paragraphs.

And you’re right. Because we hadn’t gotten there yet, I hadn’t read much about the trial, but now that we’re here, reading about it in the book has me realizing how much the writers really put into the show. Direct quotes from both trials (and the divorce trial, I’m realizing looking back) are used on the show, and not just from Betty. Things the jurors said, things Kerry Wells (Melinda Page Hamilton - Devious Maids) said, were direct quotes.

I know these seem like things any normal TV writer writing a true story should write -- but this is a story that the writers could’ve easily taken their liberties with and they didn’t. They could’ve written Betty as a woman scorned, as they noted (which, you guessed it, really happened), but they didn’t. They could’ve taken this stay-at-home would-be La Jolla socialite and turned her into a terribly heartbroken ex-wife who’d decided she’d had enough with no way out, and they didn’t.

They let us see the bad sides of Betty. They showed us all of the bad, scary, hurtful, awful sides of Dan and they said: that’s not all. The writers took this story, that could honestly be expanded to a 40-hour series if we’re being honest, and they wrote it as best as they possibly could in the eight hour (not even) time span they were given, and I, personally, think they did a phenomenal job.

Betty Broderick, in jail, as she stands trial for two counts of first-degree murder, receiving a cross-stitch that says “Free Betty Broderick so she can kill another lawyer,” is the scene that really sums up this series as a whole. Betty was always going to have people behind her, and she absolutely eats it up. At one point, we see her shake out her hand as it cramps from her responding to all of her adoring fans.

Of course, as we know, the first trial ends in a hung jury, and I’m not at all surprised about that. I looked it up and on average, it takes about 8-16 hours to select a jury. For the second Betty Broderick case, it took three weeks. To be honest, I can’t believe it didn’t take longer.

I absolutely loved the shots of the jurors discussing the case afterward to the press in between the shots of them speaking to the judge in the courtroom, especially since most of what they’d said to the press was accurate to what was said in real life. This review is a bit different because normally, I’d include things like this in my Dirty or Clean segment, but that would just be the entire review if I wrote it that way, so we’ll tweak it just a bit. “What took her so long?” Ah, Walter Polk. Infamous Juror who held onto manslaughter from the very beginning. He wouldn’t consider first-degree for even a minute, from what he and the other jurors said.

Seeing all of her friends on the stand turn against her sent me into a rage. Especially Karen (Missi Pyle - Impulse), who sat with Betty on Dan and Linda’s wedding day, who comforted her, and told her she was there for her and supported her and would continue to do so. The only person who was honest was Janet (Lena Georgas - Westworld). Thank goodness for her. Not that any of them really saved her, let’s be honest.

I did love when Betty’s lawyer stood up and pretty much said “Why were you her friend if she was this horrible person you’re describing to the jury?” Of course, the women didn’t have an answer for this. I also loved the camerawork in this scene. The close-ups on the women’s faces, from their pristine, clearly expensive earrings and necklaces, to their perfectly touched up lipstick and eyeliner, and their carefully worded phrases as they discussed money-hungry, no good Betty Broderick is what really makes you realize that these women wouldn’t know loyalty if it slapped them in the face.

The moment Betty’s eldest daughter, Tracy, is shown on the stand, we see the edges start to blur just a bit around the image of Kerry Wells. It really only starts to shift when we begin to get into what happened in Dan and Linda’s bedroom when Betty shot them. Kerry telling the story, and the intercut scenes playing it out for us? Impeccable. I absolutely love it when shows do this.

Amanda Peet’s performance as Betty in the last 15 minutes of this show (I mean, in this entire season, but I’ve talked about that enough as a whole) are indescribable. How she can keep a straight face while tears are pouring down her cheeks is something I will truly never be able to understand. She speaks nearly unwaveringly as her eyes are full and her lip trembles and you can see she’s about to break. Peet takes Betty Broderick and she embodies her. In watching videos from court you’ll see -- Peet physically reacts the way Betty does, in hand motions, in misplaced gasps, in awkward smiles.

The what-if scenes at the end of the episode made me genuinely upset because this really could’ve ended so much better for Betty had she and Dan both just gotten divorced and left each other alone when they weren’t co-parenting. If they had only interacted to discuss the children, and they actually interacted, instead of hurling insults and backhanded compliments, it would’ve gone over so much better, but we can’t go back and change the past.

In the end, I think we all knew it would be Betty’s treatment of her kids that really broke her. If everything about her divorce, and maybe even the murders (eh, because I still have to use the word murder) without bringing her children into it, people might’ve honestly claimed some sort of self-defense. She was mentally abused. She was gaslit beyond belief. Dan toyed with her for years, and when he was tired of using her as his plaything, tossed her aside and got a new one. But instead of only taking out her aggression on him, she brought everyone into it, in ways even worse than the show had time for, which is what made it 10x worse, and what made the jury finally sit down and decide to formally agree to two counts of second-degree murder.

Overall, Dirty John season two, for me, was much more interesting than season one. Season one was still amazing, and I think about it all the time, but season two has a special place in my heart; maybe it’s because I’m reviewing it, maybe it’s because I’ve done so much research and delved so deep now, but it’s so amazing, guys. Everyone involved deserves so much credit for this impeccably put together show, I truly hope it doesn’t go unnoticed or is forgotten about.

Here we are, our final Dirty or Clean? of the season! We’re going to go through and talk about what aspects from the trial actually happened (that I can piece together, at least, it was a lot of info, y’all.)

Clean: Betty received lots of fanmail in jail. They also started making bumper stickers that said things like “Do You Know Where Your Ex-Wife Is Tonight?” “Burn, Betty, Burn,” and, of course, “Free Betty Broderick So She Can Kill Another Lawyer.”
Dirty: The boys flew to California to go see Betty, but they never actually made it to visit her. Betty claims it was because they were still brainwashed by their father even posthumously, but I think we can all agree it was probably a bit more layered than that.
Clean: Both of her daughters took the stand against Betty. It was a lot nastier than what we saw, which is why I said this really and truly could’ve been a 40-hour show if we gave them no limits, but I think they showed us what was most important: Tracy and Jenny knew their father loved them and they knew Betty was in the wrong no matter how this trial was shaped.
Clean: On April Fools Day, Betty really called her friends, told them she’d escaped jail and asked them to come and pick her up. Yikes.
Clean: Most of the juror’s comments were very accurate and true, but the most notable, of course, comes from Walter Polk in the first trial, who said plainly “What took her so long?”
Clean: That Jeffrey Dahmer quote? “I should’ve eaten them. Then maybe they would’ve given me bail, too.” Betty Broderick really said that. Yikes x2.

Before we get to my favorite quote, I’d like to talk quickly about a few things I wish we could’ve gotten to, but I completely understand why we couldn’t given that this series was, again, technically less than eight hours long.

1) At one point, Betty’s lawyer, Jack Earley, recreates the bedroom set up in Dan and Linda’s bedroom -- including the actual sheets from their bed from the night they were killed. I don’t know how, legally, he was able to do this, but seeing how they fit an entire bed into a courtroom, and then watching this lawyer, who already kind of (off show) didn’t hugely favor Betty, would’ve been something to see.
2) There are a few things in the second trial that the judge barred the lawyers from discussing at all, so, of course, being lawyers, Wells and Earley tried to fit them in at any chance they got. In Bella Stumbo’s book, she describes a scene where there are days in court in which Wells or Earley had to literally shout their objections as to try and make sure the jury didn’t hear whatever comment was made, so it didn’t skew their judgment.
3) Betty Broderick’s first trial took place in October 1990, so apparently, there were lots of Halloween decorations around the courtroom during the trial. That would’ve been a fun little thing to see.

My favorite quote from this episode comes from Betty, from when she’s on the stand and she’s describing her thoughts before she drives over to shoot Dan and Linda.

“The whole world was inside my head.”

A simple quote, but something Betty has pretty much been describing from the beginning. The whole world has been inside her head since the moment she was born, since her mother put it in her head that she must be a good student, she must be a good wife, she must be a good mother. Then Dan says, well, you can’t be a student: you must be a better wife, you must be a better mother, you must be a better lover. Then Linda comes along and Dan leaves her and Betty’s kids have grown up and Betty thinks she has nothing and she says now what? Where do I go? How do I grow? The whole world is inside her head because she has the whole world to explore and no idea how to do it.

What did you guys think of season two? What was your favorite episode, or scene? Did you think they did a good job fitting it into eight episodes? Are you hoping for a specific case if it’s renewed for season three? Let me know in the comments below!
In the official last days leading to November 4th, 1989. Here we get to see everyone on the show at different ends than where we started with them, from Betty all the way down to her children. Let’s get into the build-up to Linda and Dan’s last days.

We saw Betty purchasing a gun in the last episode, and they don’t take much time to show us how quickly that could fall into the wrong hands. When Betty’s sons are over for a visit, they almost grab her nightgown, which has her gun in the front pocket. I suppose Betty telling them about the gun was better than letting it just sit around and having them curious enough to go search for it on their own, but it seems that after that she didn’t make any attempt to hide it again, which, uh, alright.

I don’t have kids, and I’m going to try to be unbiased when speaking about this, but I just feel like the best way to avoid the kids finding it in the first place would’ve just been to lock up the gun from the beginning. But, alas. Anyway. Linda and Dan’s wedding has Betty coming completely undone, which, not to side with Betty, but, I’m siding with Betty. Not with her taking their guest list and calling everyone on it, that was completely irrational, but feeling replaced and defeated because what she’s been trying to prevent is finally happening? I understand it.

It’s not that it’s not still irrational -- because some of it is -- but when you’re married to someone for 20 years and then you go through one of the most infamous divorces in California history only to be forced to sit at home with your best friend and try to not think about the fact that even though you have so much it feels like you have nothing, while your ex gets to have yet another day he claims as the happiest of his life? I truly can’t imagine how that feels.

Is that grounds for two counts of first-degree murder? Debatable. The day they get married seems to flip a switch in Betty, almost turning her off. You can see a depression settle in her that wasn’t there before and the fight leaves her, because, to her, it’s over now. They’re married, and she can’t do anything to change that. What really shakes her, what really wakes her up again and causes her to finally use that gun she’s been saving, is when her son tells her that one of his visitation weekends will prevent him from going to Disney with his friends.

Betty sees herself as a burden, saying she doesn’t want to be the reason her son misses things, and when she starts to cry her son says, “Don’t cry again, mom.” This only makes her cry harder and, eventually, he just leaves the room. It’s not his fault; kids don’t know how depression works, and honestly, Betty probably didn’t either in the late ‘80s.

This comes almost immediately after she didn’t get to spend Halloween with them, either, and as she discussed with her friend earlier, this was most likely going to be the last Halloween that they would spend dressing up and fully enjoying it as kids. Which, as a reminder, comes after Easter was ripped from her. This clearly happens often.

For Betty, though, this is it. She lost her husband, she lost her house, and now, she lost her kids. She doesn’t know how to deal with it in any other way other than how she’s always done: take it out on Dan. Betty kisses the boys, grabs the gun, takes Tracy’s keys, and makes her way to Dan and Linda’s house.

From there, it’s chaos. It’s a flurry of phone calls as we bounce from friend to friend to friend until we finally get to Jenny (Anna Jacoby-Heron - Contagion) and Tracy, the latter unable to get home quickly and the former at her mother’s side in an instant. There’s a scene where Jenny and Betty are just staring at each other having a silent conversation in Jenny’s apartment, Jenny, clearly hoping that it’s not true - Did you really kill dad? Did you really do this? Why? - and Betty - It wasn’t my intention, but there was no other way, why can’t you see that? - consistently trying to explain herself in the most incorrect way.

It’s time for Dirty John: Dirty or Clean? Where we talk about whether what happened in the episode was factual or was stretched for the dramatization!

The weirdest Clean of all: Betty really did tell a random woman at a local country club about her husband divorcing her and leaving her for another woman.
Clean: Betty Broderick stole Dan Broderick and Linda Kolkena’s wedding guest list from their home.
Clean: A maid testified at Betty’s trial that she saw Linda in Betty’s house twice in the same day stealing, and then later returning, documents, and/or journals.
Clean: I debated putting this in my favorite quotes, but it’ll go here instead: Dan quite literally told his friends on multiple occasions that Betty wasn’t going to kill the “golden goose” -- her supply of money. Yikes.
Unclear: I’m pretty sure I heard on a podcast that Betty did indeed spend the wedding day with a friend, but since I’m unable to confirm that at the moment, I’m going to have to stick that in unclear for now. We at least definitely know Dan hired security and Linda did ask him to wear a bulletproof vest, to which he declined.
Clean: This one’s a bit obvious, but she did use her daughter’s stolen keys to get inside of Dan and Linda’s house in order to kill them that night.
Clean: Betty went to her youngest daughter’s apartment after she killed Dan and Linda.

I might’ve already said this, but if I did, I was clearly wrong. My favorite quote this week is by far my favorite quote from the entire season. The way this line is delivered, the raw emotion, the pain, and anger, and tiredness really wraps it all up in a bow and says here: this is it. This is the final piece of Betty you’re going to get. Appreciate it. Appreciate her.

The quote is a voiceover from Betty as she is getting her things together and making her way over to, you know, kill her ex-husband and his new wife.

“There’s a scene in this ‘Superman’ movie where he flies around the Earth real fast and he screams this blood-curdling scream. That’s what I felt like. Standing up and doing a primal scream so loud the whole world would wake up and go ‘what’s that?’ It’s Betty Broderick going over the edge. But you know, nice girls don’t do that. So I just did the scream inside.”

What did you guys think of the episode? Are you excited for the finale? What do you think will happen in the courtroom? How do you think the rest of the kids will react to what Betty has done? Are you gonna miss slightly charming slightly creepy Christian Slater, or do you think they’ll somehow get him into the finale? While this episode features zero physical violence from either party, Betty and Dan are still entirely too unsettling for me, and this week, even Linda decides to throw her hat into the ring.

While this episode may appear slower, a relaxing stream compared to the tumultuous rapids this season has been, I’d think of it rather as a calm before the storm. Betty is mostly composed in the courtroom -- channeling all of her anger inwards instead of out, never really having an outburst at Dan, which, to me, was kind of shocking.

Betty has never hidden the fact that she’s got a temper. Here, though, she’s highly reserved. She’s put together and pinned up, asking the judge for advice when she needs it since she’s representing herself, and sharing self-deprecating smiles with her husband’s lawyer when she makes a mistake she didn’t realize she was making.

Even when she’s taking Linda’s pictures at her daughter’s graduation (which, man, they really just didn’t have limits on graduation tickets in the ‘80s huh?) Betty is somewhat calm. It’s not a serene calm, no, but a methodical calm. She’s definitely not stable, but she’s also not about to burst or anything.

Here’s my take: we have no idea what actually happened in that courtroom. Since Dan convinced the judge to have it closed to the press and public, we don’t actually know anything that was said in the room apart from the figures we can take that Betty was granted by the judge. I think the writers and Amanda Peet saw an opportunity to take Betty and make her their own, and I think they did a fantastic job.

The directing in this episode definitely wasn’t my favorite. It was sometimes jumpy, and the shots felt disconnected from the series as a whole, which I guess may have been purposeful given that this episode was a huge turning point for both Betty and Dan, but I wanted to mention it regardless.

At the beginning of the episode, we see Betty receive a letter containing a newspaper clipping announcing Dan and Linda’s engagement, and on it, in large red marker, is “eat your heart out, b*tch!” At first, Betty is furious and confused, because she assumes it’s from Linda, except, as her friends point out, Linda doesn’t act like this. She’s not aggressive. She’s not petty and impulsive and she doesn’t send things in the mail like this to Betty to antagonize her.

At the end of the episode, when it’s revealed that Betty only received the clipping, and she herself, with her own red marker, wrote the phrase on top of the clipping and pinned it to her fridge? Guys! What an incredible reveal. I loved that you could see that Betty was upset with herself, confused as to why she would even do that. To me, it’s a good callback to a few episodes ago, when the court psychiatrist talked about how everything about your life comes into question when you are so deep into a relationship that sometimes relies solely on gaslighting and manipulation. Betty is losing herself, and now -- even if she chooses to do nothing with it -- she’s been made aware of it.

Linda isn’t shy of the pettiness, though. She’s an incredibly flat character, all things considered, but this is called the Betty Broderick Story. While, yes, Linda married Dan, Betty purposefully centered Linda’s entire existence in her own life around making sure she never cared about her enough to even name her. She called her Linda for the first time this episode! And she still put ‘wh*re’ in the middle of it!

Betty decides to contact Linda and Dan and ask for her wedding china back. She describes it over the answering machine and says she wants it back and she even has friends talk to Linda about it and Linda, dare I say, queen Linda, is pretty much like, “uh, this woman is trying to ruin my life, she breaks into my house every other week, threatens my fiancé and future stepchildren, threatens me on the daily, and you want me to extend an olive branch to her? You want me to be the one to do that? HA! I think maybe I’ll smash them instead.” We never see her smashing the china, but she says she might do that and it honestly made me respect Linda more, finally.

Then, of course, Betty’s talking to a friend about how she’s getting a new job and she’s going to be happy, she’s going to get her kids back, she’s going to get a fantastic settlement and whatnot, and her friend decides to let her know there are rumors going around about her being a child molester. Sorry, WHAT? I’m sorry, Dan started what rumors?! This was such a weirdly specific detail to add into the show since I can’t find any evidence of it actually happening, but, uh, HUH? Dan apparently spreads the rumor so Betty can’t work at the preschool she just got hired at, but that seems drastic. Yikes. I can't stand Dan.

In the end, Betty has to pay Dan $787,063.00 in Epstein Credits, she gets a settlement of $28, 606.02, and Betty gets every other holiday and alternating weekends with her minor kids. To be clear, now, in 2020, the Epstein Credits would be around $1.6M, and her settlement would be about $60,000.00.
However, in the end, Betty still doesn’t think this is enough since this episode closes out with Betty in a gunshop, buying a gun, the scene intensely blurred around her.

Amanda Peet was absolutely spectacular in this episode. We’ve seen that she can do unsettled, off the rails Betty well, but calm, collected, devastated Betty? Wow.
The entire scene near the end of the episode in the courtroom -- from the time where Betty stands up to read her closing statement to the end of the scene where the lights turn off and Betty sits down in the seat and just silently cries -- was the best scene of the entire series for me. Watching Betty crumple in on herself, watching Peet completely embody Betty, and letting her face twitch a certain way to indicate that she’s holding back tears, or shaking her hands out to try and hold them off? God, it was beautiful. Absolutely beautiful. Dirty John is truly being looked over this season as a whole and it’s tragic.

Welcome toooo Dirty John: Dirty or Clean? Where I take events that happened in the episode and I tell you whether they really happened or whether they were added into the fictionalization!

Wishy-Washy: Betty says she received many things in the mail from Linda Kolkena that were aggressively rude and hateful, but nothing was ever fully confirmed. Nothing was also confirmed to be from Betty herself, either, though I’d love that little twist.
Clean: Betty did ask for her wedding china back and Linda refused to give it to her.
Clean: The courts were closed for the sake of the children, and Betty represented herself.
Wishy-Washy: As stated above, since the doors were closed, we have no idea what was actually said in there, so anything really could’ve been said and all of this is just speculation.
Dirty: I couldn’t find any evidence that Dan or Linda spread rumors that Betty was a child molester, to prevent her from receiving a job or otherwise, so that’s extremely unclear.
Wishy-Washy But I’ll Let It Slide: Betty actually bought the gun after a divorce hearing had been called with “no proper warning” as she claims.

I have two favorite quotes from this episode because they both made me actually, truly gasp out loud, and I haven’t stopped thinking about them since I watched this episode.

This first one comes from a scene where Dan’s lawyer, Walter Mills (George Newbern - Scandal), is questioning Dan on the stand:

Mills: How would you describe the support that Mrs. Broderick provided you when you began your legal career?
Dan: Nonexistent.

Uh, I beg your pardon? Was Betty not the one typing all of your legal briefs? Did Betty not stay home and feed the baby and go through a miscarriage nearly alone so you could go hang out with your lawyer buddies to up your legal career? Was Betty not taking odd jobs up until the day she gave birth to help support you at the beginning of your legal career? Just making sure we’re talking about the same Mrs. Broderick here.

My second favorite quote comes from Dan also on the stand, except here, Betty is questioning him. These quotes are honestly just here so I can talk about how much I despise the Christian Slater version of Dan Broderick. (Not that the real Dan Broderick was very stellar.)

Betty: When was the moment this divorce really started?
Dan: April 12th, 1969.

As Dan reveals to the court, this is the date Betty and Dan got married. I’m not sure if he said this because he really meant it, or because he really hates Betty this much, and he really thinks their entire time together was that terrible, but man, what a horrible thing to say. Part of me wants to say that he only said it to trip her up, to make her stumble even more because she’s not an actual lawyer, and he knows that and he’s trying to throw her off her game, but goodness, can you imagine your husband looking you in the eye and telling you your marriage was over the day it began? Dan Broderick was a cruel, mean, despicable man.

What did you guys think of the episode? What were your favorite scenes? Are you excited to see this all finally blow up soon? How many people can I get with me for a virtual protest if this show gets zero nominations at the Emmys this year? (Just kidding. Maybe.) Let me know what you guys thought in the comments!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29964715.post-14031190324031321102020-07-02T05:25:00.000+01:002020-07-03T17:39:04.858+01:00Dirty John - Episode 2.07 - The Shillelagh - Promotional Photos + Press Release
They’re showing Betty full-on losing her mind. As I’ve stated before, I was very worried that they weren’t going to include this, so I might’ve been too excited to see Betty Broderick attempting to ruin Christmas for Dan, Linda, and, oh yeah, her children.

Ah, Betty and her children. This episode did a great job focusing on Betty essentially turning on her children. She goes from fighting to get them back for herself, for them, to only wanting to get them back as a prize to be won from Dan. Sigh. Children are not a prize to be won in a game called divorce. They are humans who need to be taken care of in the formative years of their lives. Betty doesn’t recognize this, though. We’ll discuss this more, later.

I want to point out something very small that I’m not going to even try to put in Dirty or Clean, but when Dan walks into his office and hands his answering machine tape to his secretary -- she’s not the same woman we saw last week. She’s not the woman who came to him with her thoughts that Linda should keep their relationship under wraps. So Dan, presumably, fired his last secretary when she presented concerns about him and Linda and hired someone new who didn’t care. He is… a piece of work.

This week, we got to see Betty actually doing all of the actions I discussed in last week’s Dirty or Clean: smashing the windows of Dan’s house, spray painting walls black, and leaving shattered glass and broken items strewn across the house. This is my formal apology to the writers of Dirty John for thinking they weren’t going to showcase this. My bad, guys. I just wasn’t patient enough. (I know, I know, a TV watcher, impatient?! Shocker!)

We have to discuss the scene where Betty is served the papers that say she’s officially divorced. I say this every week and I’m going to say it again: Amanda Peet is phenomenal. Her facial expressions, her body tensing, the disconnect that you can see from her eyes to the rest of the world around her, my God, she is fantastic. It’s going to be a crime when she doesn’t get awards for this because I can already feel that this show will be grossly robbed this year.

Aaaanyway, at one point, Betty storms over to Dan’s house, and one of my favorite scenes takes place: Betty’s screaming at Dan, he slams the door in her face, and it transitions from a zoom-in of Betty’s hands banging on Dan’s door to Betty’s hands resting on her lap in handcuffs.

Let me explain why I loved this scene so much. This whole show has been talking about how much Dan stifles Betty, how much he has a hold on her, and how he holds her back, except, this time, Betty could’ve very well prevented the situation she’s in. If she had just stayed home, minded her own business, and shut her mouth, she could’ve avoided sitting in the local jail alone and she never would’ve ended up in handcuffs in the first place. I think this is the first time we, as viewers, must really acknowledge that Betty has her hands tied, she’s being stifled, being held back, because of her own doing.

Then, she talks to her friends who are incredibly rational the entire time. Hi rational friends! I see you! I support you! I wish she would have listened to you and I’m sorry she didn’t! Finally, one of the friends sets her up with Hilary Clark (Mary B. McCann - Little Children) a no-nonsense lawyer who, frankly, I would like to be best friends with. Another problem I have with Betty is that the whole time I’m just sitting there like girl, get a job. She does say later that she tried to get a job in education, a profession she’s worked in before, but at that point? Trying to get your kids back, trying to make a life for them and for you? Work at a Bed Bath and Beyond if you have to. (Yes, those existed then, they were founded in 1971.)

Then, of course, Betty can’t pay her lawyer, and she won’t agree to Dan paying her lawyer, and so her lawyer decides to leave. Betty, you’re a beautiful, formerly rich, uppity housewife. Go work at a dang Bed Bath and Beyond! Work at Sears! Work at a grocery store if you have to, but if you’re putting some sort of effort into making it seem like you care about your kids, the courts may have a bit more empathy towards you.

Man, Easter was heartbreaking. Seeing Betty put on those bunny ears, seeing her hide the eggs and talk to the boys, so excited to see them, only to have Dan rip it from her… predictable, but actually heartbreaking. This is the moment Betty stops seeing her children as her children and she starts seeing them as bargaining tools. This is not the moment it all ends for her, that comes later in this episode, but this is the moment she realizes that if she doesn’t have her kids on her side, she has nothing.

So you know what she does? She takes it out on her son. She rants and she rants and she rants on this phone call with a child, her son, who is no older than 12, about his father, and his “wh*re”, and how Dan screwed both of them over. She uses less tasteful language, but I’ll let you watch the episode if you’d like to really know. Betty is a mess and she’s taking it out on her children and it’s truly awful. Her son is begging her to stop, to be normal, to be quiet, stop calling his dad and cursing him out and giving him ammo, but she’s just going on and on about how this call is being recorded. Which, yes, it is being recorded. But, Betty, did you really think it wouldn’t be, or are you mad that you got caught?

They hang up, Dan gets to be the good parent and let the boy watch television, tell him about why Betty is a petulant child who kicks and screams when she’s wrong and upset, gets to be the knight in shining armor when his mom is the crazy, unhinged one, and, my God, I cannot stand him. How can Linda look at this man and be in love with him? How can she see what he’s doing to this woman, the mother of his children, and think it’s chill? Yes, Betty is clearly unhinged on another level, but Linda, why are you taking part too? It makes me wonder what Dan really tells Linda about Betty, and what Linda thinks she knows about their marriage.

I was going to mention this in my Dirty or Clean section, but I wanted to talk about my thoughts on it, so I thought it would be better to do it here. The deductions from Betty’s monthly support check each time she violated an order were unfortunately very real. How Dan described it was real, too. $100 for every obscene word she used, $250 for every time she was on his property, $500 for every entry into his house, and $1,000 for every time she took a child without his permission.

In retrospect, this is horrifying. We’re talking about a man telling a woman when and how she can act and what she can and cannot do, but in all reality, if the tables were turned, and she did this to him, how different would it be? Would this not be just as valid? If Betty came and got a child and just didn’t tell him about it and then he reported it to court instead of docking that thousand dollars -- that’d be kidnapping, not her new Burberry jacket for winter that she doesn’t need because they live in California.

I dislike Dan Broderick very much. He was controlling and manipulative and selfish and all-around weird. But this, to me, while maybe petty, is not the worst way he could’ve gone about this situation. Betty was clearly not backing down. He called the police on her. He got her arrested. He had her put in a straight jacket, for God’s sake, and she still wasn’t giving up on this revenge that she wanted to take against him and Linda, so honestly? This is tame when you think about what he, a rich, white, lawyer, could’ve done to a single, now childless mother in the ‘80s and gotten away with. Is it petty? Yes, 100%, and he gets called out for that as he should, by the judge. But it is not the worst thing he could’ve done.

And, my goodness, if Betty had just stopped, and listened, and thought about her children, she wouldn’t have even gone over her payment! Which is also true, by the way. She did go over his limit, at one point, and a month later, a judge increased her monthly allowance to $12,500, which was then later increased to $16,100. (Which is approximately $37,600 now, by the way. A month.) But, I’ve never been in this situation, so I can’t say how it feels to be Betty or Dan, so honestly, it’s a moot point for me to tell either of them to control their emotions.

Then, we reach the moment it all ends. Betty is speaking to the court-appointed therapist, Dr. Hayes (Patty McCormack - The Master), for a second time, which even she points out is unusual. Betty is talking about Linda, who she repeatedly refers to as the wh*re -- which, did anyone else know USA Network could get away with using that word that many times in one episode? I’m sure they had the clearance as soon as they got approval for the case, but I swear, it had to be no less than 15 times.

Dr. Hayes asks why Betty won’t refer to Linda as, well, Linda, and Betty loses it. She says Linda’s name, and then when Dr. Hayes asks why Betty is so upset that she had to say that, and about Linda as a whole, Betty becomes furious. The edges blur, you can see Betty falling apart at the seams, and before Betty exits the office she spits out, “if I’m not angry, I’m not gonna make it.”

Back in the courtroom, Betty is denied custody of her children, thanks to the therapist’s notes, uh, yeah, duh, and Betty is sentenced to a 25-day jail sentence. Well, hold that thought. Alright, Betty gets a lightened six-day sentence and she must apologize to the court. At first, I don’t think she’s going to do it. Even she hesitates. Then, though, she stands, she promises she’s going to do better, and you almost believe her.

Betty Broderick, alone, unable to get her affairs in order at home, is led out of the courtroom, and out of this episode, in handcuffs. The scene to lead us out of this episode as a whole is Dan Broderick, III, proposing to Linda Kolkena, in a bar full to the brim of their friends. This man is a monster.

Alright, y’all. It’s time for Dirty John: Dirty or Clean? My section where I take events from the episode(s) and let you guys know whether they actually happened or whether they’re part of the fictionalization!

Clean: As stated before, Betty Broderick indeed smashed windows, spray-painted Dan’s walls, and broke into the house several times, violating restraining orders and court orders time after time.
Clean: I’ve already said this, but Betty had upwards of five lawyers going into this (five year) divorce.
Clean: Dan Broderick started recording the messages Betty was leaving on his answering machine, and the conversation Betty has with her son is real. (The podcast Murder Dictionary plays part of the audio on their podcast episodes about Betty Broderick.)

I have two favorite quotes for this episode because I honestly couldn’t pick between the two. You’ll understand why.

The first is from the scene where Betty shows up outside of Dan’s door and when he opens the door she screams, “you’re like a slug with a fancy tie on!”
I screamed! Give Amanda Peet the Emmy just for this line, honestly.

My second favorite is when Betty is talking to her court-appointed therapist. I’m gonna type that again for you before you read this quote. Her court-appointed therapist.

Betty: I’m not gonna be a single parent of four kids. He’ll die first.
Dr. Hayes: Are you threatening him?
Betty: I threaten him all the time.

GIRL. BETTY. This is the woman who decides whether or not you can have your children back!

What did you guys think of the episode? Are Betty and Dan both being way too petty? Will these upcoming nuptials finally break Betty? What will Amanda Peet’s holiday look be next week? I personally loved the bunny ears.
PS: Christian Slater is still scary as heck. Today, behind Door Number One, we have an episode completely devoted to watching Dan cheat on Betty! Behind Door Number Two, we have Betty abandoning her kids outside of Dan’s house for hours on end, and finally, behind Door Number Three, we have Betty smearing Boston Creme Pie over Dan’s entire bedroom. Oh, sorry, did you think one of these was going to be a good option? Nope, these two episodes of Dirty John made it very clear that when we’re discussing the Broderick’s, there are absolutely no good options.

First, we need to talk about the opening scene of Marriage Encounter. My. Goodness. The camera work was incredible, with subtle pans to Betty and Dan whenever a small line was said that was referenced later on, or when something, unbeknownst to everyone else at the table, directly related back to Betty and Dan themselves. The way you could see Dan mentally taking notes drove me insane, but it made me love the scene all the more.

I especially loved when one of Dan’s friends said, “get them into therapy,” regarding the kids, right before a divorce, and Dan’s eyebrow lifted. You could think back to the first episode when we found out that Dan put the kids into therapy without even telling Betty. Of course, we realize most likely why it is that she didn’t know in episode four. More on that later, though.

I also want to talk about something that’s been bugging me since I watched episode three -- Marriage Encounter. In this episode, there’s a scene where Betty is helping Dan type up his legal briefs, and while I don’t expect her to retain any knowledge of what she’s typing, there’s still something in the back of my brain that says, “how did she not know about the court date?!”

As you’ll remember, back in episode one, Dan tells Betty verbally that the hearing for their legal divorce is postponed, and without a letter — or a formal seal from a lawyer or anything — she takes his word for it. As a result, she doesn’t show up to the court date, and she loses custody of all four of her children in one fell swoop.

Now, here’s my dilemma: did she really not know you needed a formal letter, an actual letter from an actual lawyer or judge that stated their court date has been postponed and rescheduled or was she just so deep in denial that this was actually happening that she convinced herself whatever Dan said was correct? Or, countering both of these points, had she just been gaslit by Dan for so long that she was just willing to believe anything he told her, including something that could so drastically impact her life? I’m still undecided. What do you guys think?

We discover my very favorite thing about Linda Kolkena in episode three: she can’t type. This is expanded upon more in episode four when she eventually learns to type. She stays late at the office specifically to learn, which blossoms her relationship with Dan, and she’s hired as a paralegal assistant without any prior typing experience. She was a flight attendant turned receptionist turned… paralegal assistant. Betty is rightfully upset and confused when Dan tells her he’s hired Linda to be his assistant -- especially when Betty tells him to fire Linda within a month and he doesn’t. Not in the month deadline she gives him, nor in the period of time between her hiring and Dan and Linda’s marriage.

Episode four is where you-know-what really starts to hit the fan. Remember when I talked about how I was hoping to make it through without screaming at my TV every week? I didn’t even make it through five minutes this week. When Linda complimented the design of the office and Dan just smiled and thanked her, I felt insane. It would’ve been so easy for him to have said, “Thank you so much, Linda, my wife Betty designed it. I’ll let her know you loved it.” But, you know, he’s a man. More than that, he’s Dan Broderick III, MDA, so that was clearly asking for way too much.

Then, we get the scene I’ve been waiting for. After they didn’t add the bit where Betty had an ax in the seat next to her when she rammed into Dan’s house (if you missed that -- check out my review from last week) I was a bit worried they’d skip past this, but thankfully, they didn’t. After Betty finds out that Linda took Dan out for his birthday, when Betty had wanted to surprise him, she goes home and takes all of his clothes out of the closet, brings them to the backyard, and promptly lights them on fire. Of course, when he gets home he talks his way out of it, gaslights her into oblivion, and it’s a tragic scene all over again that makes me hate Dan even more than I already did, but for a second you’re happy that Betty seems to get some gratification.

Except then I’m reminded that, oh, right, Betty pretty much sucks too. After the court psychologist (Jeff Perry - Scandal) spends all episode pretty much framing Betty’s actions around his words, he finally says this:

“The longer that the marriage goes on, the more stake in it in terms of children, stability, its essential fabric, everything is called into question. The victim’s self-esteem, their ability to trust themselves, as far as whether they even were a good parent; a good person, or, whether they can be.”

There’s a scene where Betty and Dan discuss having more children but, ultimately, after coming home one day, Betty and the kids find their home infested with rats. When Dan won’t leave work to help them, Betty leaves all four of the kids outside of the house Dan has been living in and flies back East for a family party. She doesn’t call Dan beforehand, doesn’t make sure he’s home, nothing. She just drops them off and leaves.

I haven’t mentioned the actual Marriage Encounter retreat because it honestly feels like a moot point. It was strange to me that they gave it so much time in the first place. We knew whatever Betty said in her letter was going to be sickeningly sweet and whatever Dan said would end up being not true. We know how this ends, so to make us watch them make these promises to each other that are so out of reach wasn’t even funny - eh. It felt like a waste of our time and a waste of their time, but I understand why it had to happen. They wanted us to see that they tried to salvage the marriage, as dead as it already was when they did decide to go to the Encounter.

The final blow comes in the form of a court order that says that Betty can’t be on Dan’s property without Dan present. Yeah, that montage of Betty breaking into his house several times will do it. Betty demands to know if she was right and if Dan really was sleeping with Linda, and he tells her he was. She wasn’t imagining it. He’s in love with Linda, and, “You were right the whole time.” Betty laughs, which quickly turns from a laugh of triumphant disbelief - I did it! I just got my husband to admit I was right! - to outright horror - My god, I did it, I just got my husband to admit that he’s been cheating on me for two whole years.

This show is truly amazing. I cannot get enough. Every time I think it can’t get better, it does, and every time I think I know everything about this case, I’m spending even more time researching, digging deeper into archived articles and podcasts from years ago. Betty is insanely good, and I cannot recommend the show enough. If you’re on the fence, watch it. If you’re tuning in for just one person, or event, or minuscule reason, watch it. It’s worth it, I promise you.

It’s time for Dirty John: Dirty or Clean? My section where I take events from the episode(s) and let you guys know whether they actually happened or whether they’re part of the functionalization!

Clean: In 1976, Betty and Dan Broderick attended a Catholic Marriage Encounter weekend in the hopes that it would strengthen their marriage.
Clean: Betty told Dan to get rid of Linda by October 1st, or get out. I’m going to mark Dan’s comment as clean here as well -- Betty says Dan said if anyone was going to move out, it would be her.
Clean: Dan Broderick and Linda Kolkena began sleeping together in 1983.
Clean: Dan bought a sports car after consistently belittling Betty for how much money she spent.
Clean: Betty did go to his office for his birthday, and she did learn that Linda took him out, and she did indeed go home and set all of his clothes on fire in the backyard. Whew.
Clean: In 1984, Betty Broderick tried to have her tubes untied.
Wishy-Washy: A secretary at Dan Broderick’s office told defense investigators that Dan and Linda’s affair was widely known about in the office by late 1983. It’s unclear if anyone ever actually confronted Dan.
Wishy-Washy: While Betty did drop all of the kids off at Dan’s house at one point, it wasn’t all at once, but one at a time. It makes sense that they showed them all at once to shorten time, though.
Clean(ish): Betty let herself into the house when she wasn’t supposed to one day and smeared Boston Creme Pie all over Dan’s closet and bedroom. She claims that her youngest daughter confirmed that Linda made it the night before.
Dirty: I’m not letting this one fly. I said in the beginning of reviewing this that I didn’t want Betty to be made out to be incredibly compliant, but it seems that’s what they’re doing, so I want to make it somewhat clear: while Betty Broderick was a victim of a lot of things, she wasn’t completely innocent. Betty broke into Dan’s Coral Reef home multiple times. First, before the Boston Creme Pie incident, she smashed his windows and spray-painted his walls, curtains, and fireplace black. Then came the pie incident. There were two more violations after that, which both resulted in shattered glass windows and eventually ended in criminal contempt charges.

I don’t have a favorite quote from Marriage Encounter, but it’s okay, because I have two from More to It Than Fun, so that can fill the void.

My first favorite quote from More to It Than Fun is when Betty is at dinner with Dan… Well, when Betty is supposed to be at dinner with Dan, but Dan is on the phone with Linda, so Betty does her own thing until Dan finds her back at the restaurant, and then he questions the garment sitting on his chair:
Dan: What’s that?
Betty: Oh, a dress… that I look amazing in.
Dan: I can’t wait to find out how much that means it costs.
Betty: I can’t wait for you to find out either… It was eight grand.
Then Dan scoffs because of course he does. Because how dare Betty buy a dress for eight grand that makes her feel good when her husband was just on the phone with a woman she knows he’s sleeping with. How dare Betty make an exuberant purchase when Dan just bought a red sports car -- the very typical “I’m a man having a mid-life crisis!” car. How dare she.

My second favorite quote is when Dan walks into the backyard as Betty is burning his clothes and she says “You want out? I moved you out.” I love this quote so much. She’s saying so many things in this quote. She doesn’t say, “you want to move out? I moved you out.” She says, “you want out?” And she means “you want out of this marriage? You want out of being a father, of being my husband, of holding loyalty to me, of sharing my bed, and our vows? You got it. You’re out. You move out of this house, you take all of that with you.” And he knows that. Which is why he doesn’t leave right that second. He stays, he hears her out, and he lets her explain herself because he knows if he walks out that door right now, he isn’t coming back.

There is still so much left to happen, and only four episodes to go. I’m excited to see what else they have in store for us, and what else Amanda Peet and Christian Slater have for us, because man, Christian Slater is scary when he really turns it on.

What did you guys think of the episodes? What were your favorite and least favorite parts? We’re obviously seeing more of the trial lately, are you excited to start getting more into that? And didn’t Amanda Peet as Betty look so cute in her little Christmas getup in episode four? Let me know in the comments below!

Throughout the first episode alone, we end up in a psych ward, a night club in the 80s, and a family court. That’s not even mentioning episode two, when we get three timelines, one of them being post-Dan Broderick’s death. Fun! Let’s jump in.

I have to admit, coming into writing this is a lot more difficult for me because I’ve never written documentary reviews. While this is obviously a dramatization, Betty and Dan Broderick are not fictional characters with fictional families who will never see or hear things people on the internet are saying about them, so saying “I absolutely despise Daniel Broderick” holds more a bit more weight than saying something like “I absolutely despise Dean Boland.”

There’s also a balance between how I want to review the show, personally. Do I want to review it objectively, based on the directing, writing, editing, cinematography, etc, or do I want to review it based on comparisons to what actually happened in the Betty Broderick case? Based on the research I’ve personally done separately to watching this show? The hours of podcasts I’ve listened to and the articles I’ve read? I hope you’ll bear with me and join me as we figure this out together.

First of all, guys, the acting? Insane! Amanda Peet (2012) and Christian Slater (Mr. Robot) play off of each other so wonderfully and they’ve both mastered making me love their acting but seriously question how I’m going to get through eight episodes of this show without screaming at my TV the entire time. Spoiler alert: I haven’t even made it through two.

As is the case with most dramatizations, there are elements of the story that are true and those that are not. With that being said, I’m going to try to make it clear when something really happened. I don’t particularly like either of these parties. I hate when Dan calls Betty ‘Bets’ and I think it’s terrible when Betty loses control in front of her children and it’s wildly immature for either of them to find joy in the other suffering when, again, there are children in the picture.

When Betty slammed into Dan’s front door (with her license plate that says LOADUMUP, which is true, by the way) I was losing my whole mind. It was interesting to me that they didn’t keep the part in the show where Betty had a butcher knife in the passenger seat -- and she reached for it when Dan tried to take her out of the car. You’d think a dramatization would want to make it more dramatic, right? But, we’ll get to my theory on that later.

Dan also toys with Betty like there’s no tomorrow. He pays for a last-minute trip to Colorado for her and the kids but refuses to cover the costs for the lawyer he previously agreed, in court, to hire. He does things like calling her ‘Bets’ -- a term that you’d think should be used endearingly, but from his tone, is clearly meant to be more placating than anything else.

Then there’s the phone call after Betty goes to the club with Janet (Lena Georgas - Westworld) where Betty calls Dan and they talk and laugh about a friend they used to make fun of there. It’s sweet and nice and the music is melancholic and you’re reminded of a time in their marriage where they were happy -- so the next morning when Dan is dropping off the kids and he doesn’t even get out of his car to greet Betty, it’s shocking to her.

At the end of the episode, as the scenes are shifting between Betty having lunch with another divorced friend, and Dan in the courtroom, we’re able to slowly piece together Dan’s plan this entire episode. Dan didn’t pay for her lawyer because he didn’t want her to know what he was really doing; with her none the wiser, he could make sure she was empty-handed and take everything from her. He knew Betty would believe that she had things handled, which, yeah, she thought she did. In turn, the divorce was finalized, and she lost custody of all four of her kids because she didn’t show up to the hearing she believed was postponed.

Except, hold on, that’s not the end of the episode. The end of the episode is actually Betty, clearly flustered, in tears, speaking with a cop, saying “I’m amazed it only took one bullet to kill Dan Broderick.” How romantic, amirite?

The reason I split up episodes one and two, whereas usually I’d just put them into one big review, is because episode two is sort of its own entity. It’s almost completely a flashback episode, compiled of three (!) timelines: when Dan and Betty first met and throughout their first few years of marriage, after Dan was killed, and somewhere in the middle of these two events, in their honeymoon years when Betty was PTA-mom-of-the-year and Dan was slowly but surely rising to the top.

Dirty John seems to imply that as a woman in the 80s you must choose one -- either be a feminist or be a doting motherly housewife. This isn’t to say that being a stay-at-home housewife doesn’t mean you can’t also be a feminist, but that’s what I felt like the show says. Throughout this episode, Betty seems to make her choice clear, or at least Dan makes that choice for her. The most interesting part of this episode was, instead of showing Betty transitioning from a college student literally reading a newspaper called “The Feminist” to becoming a stay-at-home housewife, they showed the opposite. While, yes, she does pretty much go against feminism when speaking about Gloria Steinem, they place the scenes of her being with the kids, redecorating the house, and being the dutiful wife before the scenes of her lifting up Dan, encouraging him to be brave, to do what he wants and needs and to fight for it no matter what.

Betty backs the idea of getting an abortion later in the episode, which Dan is very against. Betty obviously doesn’t want an abortion but, as she points out, they can’t afford another kid right now, not with Dan still in school, and the two of them living in an already very tiny apartment. Plus, as the doctor informed her, it's a high-risk pregnancy for her. This is incredibly telling to me because they have two kids together, they haven’t been married very long, and she’s already telling him that he’s not there for her and she has no one? Dan. Bud. Yikes.

They end up going forward with the pregnancy only to lose the baby boy shortly after he was born. I don’t think this was mentioned on the show, but Betty Broderick ended up having two other miscarriages as well, so those four kids were genuine blessings.

There’s something that I’ve noticed in the last two episodes that I wanted to bring up because I literally can’t tell if this is the choice of the writers or the directors, but since the writers and directors vary, this could just be how the show is. You guys will have to let me know what you think, too.

There are some scenes I’ve noticed where certain aspects of the scene are in focus and some aren’t. In particular, this happens with scenes involving Betty and, more specifically, involving moments where Betty is reaching a breaking point. For example, this happened when she rammed her car into Dan’s house. As Dan was pulling her out of the car, Dan was very clear, but everything around him was fuzzy and blurry. I’m not sure if this is because that’s indicative of Betty’s state of mind, or if I’m looking too hard into it and it’s just a stylistic choice for the show.

It happens again in the courtroom in episode two when they’re discussing Betty shooting Dan, and later when Betty is setting up an appointment with a doctor and the doctor recognizes Dan’s name. He repeats the name and you can see his demeanor change -- he stiffens and you almost see his walls come up -- and that’s when the picture blurs. Betty’s face falls and immediately comes back up as she puts on a facade of her own, smiling as happy as ever for the husband she has to smile for.

If you didn’t already know the details of this case - which, at this point, I didn’t - the end of the episode brings yet another reveal. We find out that Betty didn’t just kill Dan, she also killed Linda, his very new wife, who we haven’t been introduced to yet.

I’m very interested to see what they do for the rest of the season and honestly, after reading up on this case, I’m a bit shocked that a show like Dirty John would choose this case to do. Betty Broderick is absolute, 100%, no doubt about it, a victim, but she’s also not innocent. I did my research on this case because I was curious and I wanted to do these reviews justice. Not everyone is going to do that, though, so I hope the show includes everything written about the way she herself admits she acted, too.

Here’s where we’re starting my new section I’m introducing just for Dirty John: Dirty or Clean? Here, I’ll take events that happened in the episode and let you guys know whether they actually happened or if they were part of the fictionalization.

Clean: Dan Broderick did sell their house under a loophole clause that Betty didn’t know about. Clean: Betty Broderick did indeed drive her car into Dan Broderick’s house while he and the kids were inside cooking dinner.
Clean: Dan Broderick did have Betty Broderick committed to a psych ward.
Dirty: Betty Broderick claimed that she couldn’t find a lawyer who would oppose a lawyer like Dan -- not that Dan wouldn’t pay for one.
Wishy-Washy: There’s no outward confirmation that Dan lied to Betty about the custody hearing being postponed -- just Betty stating that Dan made a deal with a judge behind her back, which also cannot be confirmed.
Clean: Dan got full custody of all four kids.
Clean: Dan literally introduced himself by calling himself an MDA, a “medical doctor... Almost.” (Ugh.)
Clean: According to Betty, Dan called the maids away during their honeymoon since Betty was there to clean what needed to be cleaned. (Ugh x2)
Clean: Betty Broderick did, in fact, kill Dan Broderick and his wife Linda Broderick in November of 1989.

My favorite quote from No Fault is when Betty is in the psych ward and she’s on the phone with Dan and she says: “Since all the money I have is controlled by you, withheld, or denied by you, I could always, obviously, use more. I could also just use a little bit of the respect and fairness you’d show a stranger on the street.” Yes, Betty! Slam that phone down in the psych ward! Realize your mistake and try to call back! Get told you’re on a 72-hour hold and you can’t make any outgoing calls!

Bonus Betty quote, because this one is too good to not include: “I’m a woman being divorced in America, I have no rights.”

My favorite quote from The Turtle and the Alligator is when Dan says to Betty: “What’s better, Bets? Rich, or richer?” Yes, as we all know, that’s always the best reason to become a lawyer!

What did you guys think of the episode? Are you enjoying this case better than last season? Am I looking too far into the blurred edges? How much bigger can they make Christian Slater’s glasses before they completely take up his face? Let me know in the comments below! Amanda Peet (“Brockmire,” “The Romanoffs”) and Christian Slater (“Dr. Death,” MR. ROBOT) portray the scorned lovers, Betty and Dan Broderick, as their marriage turned into what Oprah deemed one of “America’s messiest divorces” even before it ended in double homicide.

Ahead of its June 2 premiere, USA also announced a full DIRTY JOHN marathon, including all episodes of the critically-acclaimed first season and Oxygen special “Dirty John, The Dirty Truth,” is set to air tomorrow, Tuesday April 14 starting at 6am ET.

ABOUT ‘DIRTY JOHN: THE BETTY BRODERICK STORY’:

DIRTY JOHN: THE BETTY BRODERICK STORY, the second installment of the DIRTY JOHN anthology series, is based on another epic true tale of love gone wrong -- a story that spans the 1960s to the '80s, through the breakdown of a marriage that Oprah deemed one of “America’s messiest divorces” even before it ended in double homicide.

Betty Broderick, played by Amanda Peet, was the perfect Southern California blonde wife and mother. Married to her handsome college boyfriend Dan, played by Christian Slater, Betty charms everyone she meets. After years of sacrifice and suffering while supporting Dan through both medical and law school until he exploded into the San Diego legal community as a superstar, Betty is finally enjoying the fruits of their labors. That is, until Dan hires Linda, a bright, beautiful young woman without baggage with whom he can happily forget the struggles of his past. Betty's attempts to fight back and enraged refusals to accept reality only serve to isolate and destabilize her until she loses her very identity. And Dan's cold confidence blinds him to the bear he has created, and won't stop poking … until it's too late.

Produced by UCP, a division of NBCUniversal Content Studios, DIRTY JOHN moves from Bravo to USA, cable’s #1 entertainment network, for its second season. Season 2 is written by Alexandra Cunningham, who also executive produces along with Jessica Rhoades (“Sharp Objects,” “Utopia”), season one star Connie Britton, Atlas Entertainment and Los Angeles Times Studios. Netflix co-produces and has first-run rights to the series outside of the U.S.

AMANDA PEET AND CHRISTIAN SLATER TO HEADLINE SEASON 2 OF USA NETWORK’S ANTHOLOGY SERIES ‘DIRTY JOHN’
Produced by UCP, New Season to be Titled ‘DIRTY JOHN: THE BETTY BRODERICK STORY’

UNIVERSAL CITY, CA – September 9, 2019 – USA Network announced today that Amanda Peet (“The Romanoffs”) and Christian Slater (MR. ROBOT) will star in the second season of anthology series DIRTY JOHN, titled DIRTY JOHN: THE BETTY BRODERICK STORY. This second installment will be based on another epic true tale of love gone wrong -- a story that spans the 1960s to the '80s, through the breakdown of a marriage that Oprah deemed one of “America’s messiest divorces” even before it ended in double homicide.

Peet will play Betty Broderick, the perfect Southern California blonde wife and mother. Married to her handsome college boyfriend Dan, played by Slater, Betty charms everyone she meets.

“The first season of DIRTY JOHN was a story of twisted love and coercive control - and both these insidious elements are also present in and integral to the story of Betty Broderick, whom I have wanted to write about since I became a writer,” said series creator Alexandra Cunningham. “I can’t wait to see Amanda and Christian bring it to life.”

Produced by UCP, DIRTY JOHN moves from Bravo to USA, cable’s #1 entertainment network, for its second season. Season 2 is written by Cunningham, who also executive produces along with Jessica Rhoades (“The Affair,” “Sharp Objects”), season one star Connie Britton, Atlas Entertainment and Los Angeles Times Studios. The directors of season 2 will be led by Maggie Kiley (“Riverdale”) who will serve as co-executive producer/director on the season and direct four episodes, including the premiere and finale episodes. Additional directors include Kat Candler (“Queen Sugar”), Meera Menon (“The Terror”), Shannon Kohli (THE MAGICIANS) and showrunner Cunningham, who will make her directorial debut. Netflix co-produces and has first-run rights to the series outside of the U.S. The series is currently in production in Los Angeles on the Universal Studios lot.

DIRTY JOHN’s first season, based on the Los Angeles Times articles and breakout true crime podcast of the same name, premiered on NBCUniversal’s Bravo in 2018. It had the largest ratings growth from premiere to finale among new ad-supported cable scripted series in all key demos, and was one of only two series to grow every week but one in total viewers. Season 1 also garnered Bravo its first Golden Globe® nomination (Best Performance by an Actress in a Limited Series or a Motion Picture Made for Television for Connie Britton).

Amanda Peet was most recently seen in “The Romanoffs” and “Brockmire.” Before that, she starred in “Togetherness,” created by the Duplass Brothers, and Aaron Sorkin’s “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip.” She appeared in the films “Something’s Gotta Give,” “The Whole Nine Yards,” “Syriana,” “Please Give” and “Igby Goes Down,” among others. Her play “The Commons of Pensacola,” which was produced by Manhattan Theatre Club, starred Blythe Danner and Sarah Jessica Parker. Her most recent play, “Our Very Own Carlin McCullough,” debuted last year at The Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles.

Christian Slater will next reprise his role as the title character in USA’s award-winning, acclaimed series MR. ROBOT, which returns for a final season on October 6. His performance has earned him a Golden Globe® and Critics Choice Award. Most recently, Slater starred alongside Glenn Close in Bjorn Runge’s “The Wife.” Slater’s additional credits include “Archer” and “Nymphomaniac.” It was recently announced that Slater has joined UCP's adaptation of the hit Wondery podcast DR. DEATH alongside Jamie Dornan and Alec Baldwin.

Peet is represented by Gersh, Management 360 and HJTH. Slater is represented by UTA.
