I’ll admit it: season 6 was far from "Community"'s glory days, taking comparatively few risks and doing practically nothing remarkable, even with a bigger budget and the weight of an entire company essentially weighing on its shoulders. A premature cancellation by NBC and the resulting transition to Yahoo’s short-lived streaming service zapped some of the energy from the show, and the departures of nearly half of the show’s original cast certainly didn’t help either.

Despite that, Emotional Consequences of Broadcast Television, the 13th episode of the season and the cult classic’s series finale, is near-perfect; providing reasonable closure, returning to the jaunty tone and vibrancy of the show’s peak seasons, and leaving the door cracked open just enough to possibly one day fulfill their long-running “6 seasons and a movie” prophecy.

The episode begins at the triumphant end of the school year, our 6th at Greendale, as Frankie (hey guys, remember Frankie?) adjourns the Save Greendale Committee’s final meeting. After a visit from the Dean (marking his own accomplishment of going an entire school year without wearing a single over-the-top costume), the group (sans Elroy, who got a job at LinkedIn) go to Britta’s bar to celebrate.

It’s here where the writers manage to fit in one more concept episode, as the group ponders over six years together, or, as Abed might say, six seasons. When everyone begins talking about a potential 7th “season,” Abed admits he doesn’t think it will happen:

“I mean, what show ever peaks after season 6?”
“'The Simpsons,' 'Seinfeld,' 'South Park,' 'Friends?'”
“Those shows weren’t hemorrhaging characters every year.”

From here, the group begins to suggest ways in which a potential season 7 could turn out. These sequences are displayed in a series of “episode” clips set around the Study Room F table, with each preluded by the show’s title card (as if it were the beginning of its own episode).

The first sequence, as described by Abed, is a hilariously apt depiction of the show’s “formula”; with Jeff and Britta describing their characteristic banter (“Abusively cynical one-liner dismissing everything you just said;” “Absurd reaction!”), Annie trying to get the conversation on track (“You guys, can we put a pin in the B story and focus on the A story?"), and Shirley (in a brief cameo by Yvette Nicole Brown) inserting her obligatory sass (“I don’t trust A stories, never have, never will. I had a setup about a story that was so placeholder the punchline came 5 words early!”)

The rest of the group then pitches their own prospective "season 7’s," including The Dean’s filler-word-heavy, “politically correct” season (which, unsurprisingly, is not actually politically correct), Britta’s season in which Greendale becomes an independent nation at the heart of a rebellion against political injustice, Frankie’s pleasant yet robotic take, and Chang’s addition of a brand-new cast member: a magical alien ice-cube-headed man named Ice Cube Head (played by Rick and Morty’s Justin Roiland) whose main personality traits are that he shoots lightning from his fingers and eats cellphones. Shockingly, none of the others at the table are particularly interested in their friends’ versions of the upcoming year.

While Jeff is at first unwilling to participate in this pseudo-writers room, he changes his tune when Annie arrives, announcing that she has gotten an internship with the FBI and that she’ll be leaving Greendale for the summer - and possibly forever. With that, Jeff begins envisioning what his own season 7 would look like with all the members of the original study group gone. This season suddenly consists of him having to cobble together a new “Sustain Greendale” committee made up of Vicki, Garrett, Leonard, Todd, Dave, and a Jean-Ralphio Saperstein-esque tech billionaire who buys the school. Horrified not only at the thought of so much change, but also of yet another family coming together just to eventually leave him, Jeff becomes determined to pitch a season 7 in which the group can stay together.

We then see Jeff’s first pitch, where Annie, who has been commuting between FBI headquarters in Washington, D.C. for work and Greendale to see her friends, decides to leave the FBI to keep studying criminology at her Alma Mater. However, even "Season 7" Annie questions the plausibility of leaving her dream job for the sake of the show: “Being with you guys is great, but why is this a good choice for me? Why doesn’t the audience feel sorry for me?”

Jeff’s pitch solves this problem by revealing that in this season, Britta’s parents have just been murdered (in what the cops are calling a “double suicide”) and Annie decides to stay to solve the case. For obvious reasons, none of the rest of the group take very kindly toward this idea.

With the group now stuck on how a 7th year at Greendale could possibly make sense, we, the audience, can sense a deeper message beneath the surface. For so long, “Community” was a show that had to be fought for tooth and nail, and both its devoted production crew and its equally devoted fans were willing to do just that; praying through cancellation seasons, championing catchphrases, even subscribing to Yahoo! Screen, all demanding that “the show must go on.”

But "Community," ever self-aware, takes time to recognize that, at some point, the show must actually not go on. The story has been told, and if it were to continue, it wouldn’t be for the sake of the art, or the characters, or the fans. It would be only for the sake of the show's commercial value. Even the theme song ("At Least It Was Here" by The 88) that plays over and over again before each of the characters’ “pitch” vignettes, repeats the same sentiment: “I can’t count the reasons I should stay / one by one they all just fade away.” This episode is a gentle letting down of the show’s die-hard fans just as much as it is a thank-you to them.

Abed says it best, with a line that not only serves as a farewell from the characters to each other and to the audience, but that also captures the buzzing inner monologue of a TV fan with an ease and a clarity of thought that paints the writer in me envy-green.

“TV defeats its own purpose when it’s pushing an agenda, or trying to defeat other TV, or being proud or ashamed of itself for existing. It’s TV. It’s comfort. It’s a friend you’ve known so well, and for so long, you just let it be with you. And it needs it to be OK to have a bad day. Or phone in a day. And it needs to be OK for it to get on a boat with LeVar Burton and never come back. Because eventually, it all will.”

Bouncing off of Abed’s speech, Jeff makes his second pitch, in which the group all get jobs at the school, he becomes the Dean, many of the lingering plot threads are nicely explained away, and Annie goes back to wearing sweaters and dresses (“Look, guys! I’m the original Annie!”). A scene where the group is “...happy, and we’re all together, and it makes sense.”

Everyone agrees that they would love for that to happen, but when Jeff asks how they can “make it real,” Abed abruptly announces that he, too, is actually moving away; to California to work as a P.A. in Hollywood. This is when it becomes clear exactly what the writers are trying to say: it could be possible for a 7th season that checks all the right boxes, makes perfect sense and is even good. But at some point, it has to end.

Heartbroken, Jeff returns to the study room, where he imagines a hyper-romanticized life for himself where he and Annie get married, have a son named Sebastian, and have the kind of blissful relationship that you only see on TV. But again, the Annie in his imagination brings into question the reality of that scenario, asking him “Is this really what you want?” When he responds that he wants whatever she wants, she replies “Do you have any idea what I want?”

After this, we get an unconventional but adorable conclusion to Jeff and Annie’s long-running unconventional but adorable will-they/won’t they. Annie (real Annie, not “season 7” Annie) comes to the study room to find him, and he confesses to her that he wishes that he were young and fearless again and allowed to have an opinion on all the (his words, not mine) “boring-ass Marvel movies.” To his surprise, she responds by saying she herself wishes she were older; more respected; with a more stable future ahead; and had the ability to criticize the (again, shoot the messenger!) “flavorless, unremarkable Marvel movies.”

Herein lies the genius of the Jeff/Annie relationship, and demonstrates both the biggest reason why they work together so well as a concept, and yet why they couldn’t have ended the series as a couple. No - not their shared disinterest in the Avengers - but the fact that Jeff is forever a 12-year-old at heart, hurtling towards old age and a forced state of adulthood at a rate that terrifies him, while Annie is a focused, youthful go-getter, forever half a step away from the level of prestige and accomplishment she’s chasing. In many ways, they complete each other. Just...not here, not yet.

Annie advises Jeff to let himself grow up a little and accept his future, and he responds by lamenting that they never got together. Again, we’re provided with a quiet moment of somber, punchline-less reflection (all-too rare), as we recognize that it’s quite possible that Annie is the only girl Jeff really loved, and the only one he never actually pursued. The couple kiss, leaving their future relationship status purposefully ambiguous.

Then, the rest of the committee shows up and all together, they say goodbye to the study room, quietly imagining their own dreams for “season 7.” A few days later, Jeff takes Abed and Annie to the airport, and we close on the remaining members of the group at the bar, getting ready for whatever season 7 may bring.

Unlike most of "Community"’s themed, tribute or concept episodes, Emotional Consequences is not sensational or excessive. It works so well because it is a self-reflective take on its own characters, from Abed’s analytical mind to Jeff’s emotionally stunted inability to allow himself (or anyone around him) to grow up. Every character gets a moment in the spotlight (as each of their “pitches” is not only tailored to their personalities but also their styles of speech, something that allows the cast to do subtle yet spot-on impressions of one another). It’s apt for a show that is so character-driven to have a majority of its finale be a loving roast of its characters; a much-appreciated touch.

“Community” has found itself back in the spotlight as-of-late, mostly because of its long-awaited arrival on Netflix, followed quickly by the cast reunion and table read (including Donald Glover!) that took place last month. While I had known about the show for a while, I had never had the opportunity to watch it until recently. What I discovered that many of you likely already knew is that the entire show is a special kind of roller coaster ride, and in more ways than one. At its peak, “Community” was, in no uncertain terms, one of the best sitcoms of all time, and even at its worst, it was often bolder and more clever than any other comedy - network or not - dared to be.

Whatever your feelings on the season that preceded it, the “Community” finale is a reminder of the simple genius of making a TV show that exposed the mechanics of making a TV show. There was (and likely can never be) anything quite like this show on air (or online) again. It’s easy to understand that one would want to live in a timeline in which the show never ended, and it’s a comfort to see a finale that is many ways similarly inclined.

In a TV landscape in which the series finale is the hardest concept to master, “Community” did what it does best: not only nailing it, but nailing it in a way that no one would have ever anticipated. And regardless of your thoughts on the show’s later seasons, I think that it’s fair to reiterate that Emotional Consequences of Broadcast Television was a near-perfect goodbye to a unique treasure.

I say near-perfect, of course, because if I’m doing my math correctly, I think we’re still missing something...What was it again? ...Rhymes with "smoothie?"

Episodes: 1.01 - 1.08
Type: New to me
Rating: 2+, but only because the last 3 episodes were so good

Summary: An alcoholic reporter is sent back to her small hometown to investigate the murder of two young girls.
Best Reason to Watch: The ending...by far. In fact, skip the first 5 episodes and just watch the last three. It’s a doozy of an ending that left me glued to the screen and completely engrossed. Second best reason to watch - the acting.
Best Character: Frank, by default, because the only 2 characters I didn’t want to slap were Frank and Eileen and Frank was on screen longer than Eileen.

Best Episode: Milk (1.08) is the best when it comes to pacing and overall answers. Quality-wise, it wins. However, my favorite episode is Falling (1.07) because it is here that everything falls in place for Camille. She finally gets it and that is an amazing thing to watch.

Worst Episode: Episodes 1.01 - 1.04 may be the most boring TV episodes I have ever seen. My notes for these 4 episodes basically funnel down to “unbearably slow.” If I had to choose just one though, it would be Fix (1.03), which felt like the show was moving in reverse and added an unnecessary subplot.

Awards:
Best Relationship - Frank and Camille
Best Scene - Camille sacrifices herself for Amma by giving in to her mother
Most Cruel - Adora tells Camile that she never loved her
Best Twist - dollhouse creepiness
Most Sympathetic - John, who gets harassed while he’s grieving
Most Entertaining - Jackie, as Adora’s boozy best friend/minion and Camille’s staunch defender
Most Likely to Sell Her Soul to a Kardashian - Ashley
Most Likely to Sue for Defamation - small towns everywhere
Most Important - stay for the ending credits of the last episode. Seriously. The credits may be as long as a full-length action movie, but don’t fast forward them in the finale. You can, however, save 20 minutes of your life by fastforwarding through the other ones.

Best Quotes:
1. Jackie: “I mean it. You tackled those demons.” Camille: “My demons are not remotely tackled. They’re just mildly concussed.” Jackie: “Well, I’d say that’s better than the rest of us, isn’t it?”
2. Bob: “It was a man. I’d put money on it. The women around here, they don’t kill with their hands. They talk and you’re dead.”
3. Sheriff: “Well, I’m off to protect and serve.” Jackie, holding up her booze: “I’m off to mix and serve.”
4. Willis: “So let me guess. You were like a preacher’s daughter? Looks, money, and brains?” Camille: “Well, looks and money get you pretty far in this town.” Willis: “And brains?” Camille: “Well, that’ll get you out of this town.”
5. Adora: “We all have bad childhoods. At some point, you have to forget it, move on. Anything else is just selfish.”
6. Amma: “I know a girl like you. Not like you but…she says it doesn’t hurt because the cut’s already there under the skin. The knife just lets it out.” Camille: “Your friend sounds like an Afterschool Special.”
7. Willis: “Well, if you listen to all the talk around here, everyone’s some kind of crazy or evil.” Sheriff: “Only half of it’s true.” Willis: “That’s what I’m worried about. We’re looking at the wrong half.”

Overview:
This show was made for the Emmy’s. It was not made to entertain. The visuals are less than subtle, obsessively contrasting the innocent with the sordid and all the square symmetrical framing. If you remove the drawn-out, no dialogue, cinematic panning and the endless, 3-second flashbacks, this show would be about 120 minutes long instead of the 421 minutes it actually is. It’s a bloated piece of awards fare that would have been better as a 3-episode mini-series...but man, is that ending awesome! I rarely fear for a main character the way I did for Camille and that alone bumps the show up.

By the middle of episode 6, there’s actual movement on the mystery case and not just a portrait of how screwed up everyone in a small town can be. Then, in episode 7, Camille learns the truth. At that point, I couldn’t look away. It’s still very much an award-bait show, but it laser-focuses on the only part of the storyline I cared about and ratchets up the stakes and tension admirably. The middle of episode 7 to the middle of episode 8 was a wild ride and, while I did guess the main twists earlier, I had no idea if time would run out or not. The intensity of not knowing made it one of the better ends to a TV series for me and certainly one that will stick with me for a while.

Final Verdict: If plot and action matter to you, skip this show. Or better yet, skip the first 4-5 episodes. All you really need to know from them is that every single one of the characters has a dysfunctional life, they all make terrible choices, and they all have secrets.
Episodes: 1.01-1.05
Type: Under the radar
Rating: 4

Summary: Four people get sucked through a wormhole and end up on parallel worlds, each different from the next.
Best Reason to Watch: The alternate worlds make for a fun story with plenty of room to be creative. Some worlds work better than others but I enjoy the backstory to them all and how even a small change in history could turn a world upside down.
Best Character: In the 90’s, my favorite season 1 character was Quinn. Now it’s a toss up between Quinn and Arturo, depending on the episode. They balance each other out well.

Best Episode: Easy - of this batch of episodes, it is the Pilot, Part 2. The first part of the pilot does a good job of setting up the story but that means a lot of exposition that slows down the pace. It’s in the 2nd part of the 2-hour pilot that the action and the tension ratchet up. It also shows how much they can play with the concept. Details like the People’s Court were very clever and showing how the homeless guy was a Senator in a parallel world added depth to the world, even in small moments. The secondary characters were intriguing and I love that it is Wade who is the commander on the alternate Earth. I also think that of the first 5, this is the most tightly written with the least filler. Overall, this was my favorite world-building of the bunch.

Worst Episode: Summer of Love was a letdown to me, especially after the Russian and Asteroid worlds. It was much too scattered and the stakes felt a lot lower. Also, it’s the second time in a row that they split the characters up. In season 1, it tended to work better to have them all together. Plus, the 60’s just don’t do it for me.

Awards:
Best Scene - Arturo and Wade see the wormhole for the first time
Best Character Interaction - Arturo and Quinn
Best Recurring Character - Pavel
Worst Recurring Character - Bennish
Best World - Oil Boom World
Best Save - Mold...to make penicillin
Best Twist - Dead Dad walking through the door at the end of the pilot
Overall Dumbest Choices - Quinn, in most episodes he does something under the guise of heroism that’s actually just dumb and makes everything worse
Famous Last Words - Arturo: “Anywhere is better than here.”
Best Allusion Only if You Lived in the 80’s - People’s Court with Judge Wapner
The “Say What?” Award - Why is a Communist court swearing by God? That makes no sense at all.
The “I Owe You One” Award - I first got addicted to Sliders, but it also came on before another little sci-fi show called The X-Files. If it weren’t for Sliders and one of my middle school students, I may never have found my first sci-fi obsession. Thank you, Sliders, for introducing me to Mulder and Scully.

Best Quotes:
1. Wade to Quinn: “Hey, look at me. I have no regrets. Understand? Yeah, yeah, I miss my family and of course, I don’t want to die but I have done more and seen more since we started sliding than I ever imagined possible. I don’t know. Maybe I’m crazy but I really feel connected to all those other Wades out there. They’re all me. If I die here, at least I know they’re gonna go on.”
2. Arturo: “Mr. Bennish, if we survive, I promise you this. I will dedicate my life to isolating the gene that makes you so obnoxious and I will destroy it.”
3. Arturo: “Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. I think I’ve just seen God and I could have sworn he was driving a Cadillac.”
4. Rembrandt: “Lord, Lord. You can take a man’s body and beat it. You can take his soul and try it, but to do this to a hamburger is just downright unkind.”
5. Doc: “You do know that if we fail tonight, the entire West Coast uprising will be extinguished. Everything, finished.” Wade, as the rebels look at her for inspiration: “Then, we won’t fail.”
6. Rembrandt: “You’re gonna have to explain this to the insurance boys, Q-Ball. You’re gonna have to tell them that my beautiful red sled is on another planet where it’s stuck in a freakin’ iceberg. They’re never gonna buy that when I put in my claim.”

Overview:
The first two seasons of Sliders remain one of my all-time favorite sci-fi TV shows. Sliders has a clever premise that allowed the writers to explore many different facets of history and life, yet didn’t have to adhere to all of the constructs that tend to sink time travel shows for me. In these 5 episodes, the show was still feeling its way with some earths working better than others. However it gave a glimpse of just how clever this show could be before it got stuck in “movie rip-off of the week” mode and then the morass that was the Kro-Maggs. When it was at its best, it reminded me of the sci-fi classic, The Twilight Zone, in that it could entertain as well as make you think. The ever-changing worlds let the characters face a wider range of issues, which led to making them more well-rounded and easier to relate to. It also tapped into the “what if’s” of history that I find fascinating. While my favorite episodes come later in the series, these were a pleasant walk down memory lane.

Final Verdict: If you don’t mind 90’s CGI and a few bumps in the road, I highly recommend the first 2.5 seasons of this show. I guarantee there will be some worlds that stick with you and made even a few you wish you found yourself. This show was also made for fan fiction if that’s your thing.
Episodes: 1.01 - 1.05
Type: rewatch
Rating: 4+

Summary: A group of misfits at Greendale Community College wind up in the same study group and meta hilarity ensues.
Best Reason to Watch: This is one of the few comedies that can have me doubled over, gasping for breath in laughter.
Best Character: Abed is one of my favorite comedy characters of all time. His Asperger’s Syndrome makes him the odd guy out, often not understanding the basics of human interaction. To connect, he speaks through film and TV, skewering the other characters and, more importantly, the tropes of comedy. He says what the audience is thinking and makes us laugh in the process.

Best Episode: Introduction to Film (1.03) - Since Abed is my favorite character, it’s no surprise that the first episode that focuses on him is my favorite in this set. However, it is also the first episode that really tugged at my heartstrings too. What starts off as just another disagreement between Britta and Jeff slowly turns into a silent plea from Abed for his father to understand him. Things between them have gotten worse since his mother left and Abed thinks his father blames him for that. After seeing his film, both father and son connect. It’s both funny and tender, and that is a winning combination for me.

Worst Episode: Pilot (1.01) - While I do like the pilot, it had some rough patches. First off, it focuses on 2 of my 3 least favorite characters in season 1 - Jeff and Britta. Also, both of them are at their most obnoxious. The whole thing boils down to Jeff trying to be too cool for Greendale and Britta trying to be morally superior to everyone.

Awards:
Best Scene - Abed shows his dad his movie in an attempt to communicate with him
Best Character Interaction - Abed and Troy
Best Silent Conversation - the group deciding whether to let Jeff back in the group or not
Best Reactions - Spanish class to Pierce and Jeff’s bizarro presentation
Most Annoying - Vaughn
Most Surprising Pair - Jeff and Shirley’s friendship
Best Speech - Jeff in defense of Britta / Annie motivating Pierce
Most Over the Top - Abed trying to make Troy believe he’s an alien
Most Terrifying - the mascot for the Human Beings, which looks like a mime serial killer
Best Running Gag - the ending scenes with Troy and Abed

Best Quotes:
1. Jeff: “Gentlemen, I’m sure you suspected that Miss Perry was pretty odd before the recess but if you could have heard all the stuff she just told me in the shower, you would realize she is all the way out of her entire damn mind. She doesn’t want to succeed because she doesn’t think she can, so she goes out of her way to fail. That’s crazy, but do we really want to make it a crime to be crazy at Greendale? I mean look at us. I mean you two are arguing about status at a college that correspondence schools make fun of. Dean, you want so bad for this place to be Ivy League that you are putting us at risk of electrocution because everyone on this campus is nuts.”
2. Annie: “You sat in a room for 26 straight hours. Didn’t that bother you?” Abed: “Yeah, I was livid.” Annie: “Then why didn’t you leave?” Abed: “Because you asked me to stay and you said we were friends.”
3. Jeff, to a crying Annie: “This won’t work. The last time you did this, I saved a vial of your tears and I’ve been slowly building up an immunity.”
4. Britta: “You didn’t hurt my feelings, Shirley. I don’t need to go to the bathroom with other people. I was just trying to throw you a bone because I like you.” Shirley: “Oh, you can keep that bone. Listening to a story about a stranger p** me off and taking the stranger’s side? And then you can’t talk about your own business, but you insinuate my mama’s a robot because she and I want makeovers. That is the ladies’ room, Britta, a place where ladies go to share, listen, support each other, and discretely eliminate waste. And I like you too. I even like it you’re a little hard, but if you can’t learn to be soft in there, you need to pee alone.”
5. Jeff to Duncan: “You know, you have the savoir-faire of a hyena. How is it that you and James Bond come from the same island?”
6. Shirley: “They call me Tattle-ina. It’s a bumble bee nickname. It’s cute but it stings.”

Overview:
Like another one of my favorite comedies, Galavant, the magic of Community lies in its ability to poke fun of itself and not take itself too seriously. Whether it is in the form of Abed’s meta one-liners or something as absurd as a rickety desk fort, Community really makes me laugh. I literally spit water out on my keyboard in one scene of this rewatch. Yet, in almost every episode, there are moments that also tug at your heartstrings. These first few episodes do a good job of highlighting each of the main characters, giving you a solid idea of who they are and what motivates them. They are unique enough to stand out but they also harbor their own insecurities, making them relatable instead of stereotypes. I really like how season 1 mixes them up so that they all play off one another instead of only focusing on Jeff and Britta’s relationship.

Episodes: 5.04 - 5.08
Type: continuation
Rating: 3

Summary: Things in New Seattle get more intense as extremists on both sides - human and zombie - plan for genocide, while the US government debates on whether or not to just nuke the whole place.
Best Reason to Watch: Because it is the final season of a 5-season show and who doesn’t want to know how it ends?
Best Character: Major - giving Major a plot that does not revolve around Liv and gives him the chance to be both the voice of reason and a leader that takes action is doing wonders for his character. I haven’t liked him this much since the beginning.

Best Episode: Death Moves Pretty Fast (1.05) wins for one reason: Blaine finally gets his. I’ve been waiting for this for 4 seasons now. It’s about time someone calls Blaine out for being the murderous, vain, douche that he is. Not that Al is much fun, but she gets the job done. This is also the first time that I saw the Dead Enders as a credible threat. Generally, they are more eye rolling and obnoxious than dangerous, but messing with the brain tubes was clever.

Worst Episode: The Scratchmaker (1.06) - Personally, I found both 1.06 and 1.07 dull, but The Scratchmaker also brings back one of my least favorite characters, Stacey Boss. Ugh! Do we really need him again? I also was not a fan of the Blaine voice-overs or hearing about Blaine’s perspective at all. He’s a murderer. Case closed. Plus, the brain of the week didn’t come into play until halfway through the episode, robbing us of most of the comedy.

Awards:
Best Scene - Major takes down Justin mid-rant
Best Character Interaction - Liv and Ravi, always
Most Fun Fight Sequence - Blaine kicks the Dead Enders’ butt to samba music
Most Fun Character - doped up Clive
Most Fun Interrogation - Liv and Ravi while Clive is out of commission
Best, if Evil, Plan - giving all the zombies Alzheimer dementia brain
Biggest Suck - Dolly Durkins is terrible to her zombie son, Murphy. No Mother-of-the-Year awards for her.
Best Bluff - Major makes Stacey Boss think he doesn’t need brains to get him to supply them at a cheaper rate
Biggest/Least Necessary Surprise - Liv’s mom is back to tell Liv who her father is

Best Quotes:
1. Jake: “It’s hard to prepare gourmet meals when your taste buds are shot.” Liv: “Beethoven was deaf. Suck it up.”
2. Liv: “Horses disrupted feet. Trains disrupted the horse. Smart drugs will disrupt the mind itself. Imagine, Ravi, the new normal. Synthetically enhanced brains processing a massively expanded sensorium wired into a worldwide data net with cybernetically empowered superbodies.” Ravi: “Got it. The future will be obnoxious.”
3. Liv: “We might lose faith sometimes, but we can’t give up on family. It might be the most important thing we’ve got.”
4. Mom: “You don’t talk to me like that, like you’re the aggrieved party here. You left your brother to die without any kind of explanation.” Liv: “Well surely by now you’ve figured out why I did what I did. I would have turned him into a zombie and that may seem almost normal now, but at the time, I wasn’t sure that that was the best option.”
5. Michelle, after putting Clive down as the father of her baby: “Look at you. You’re here. You brought me snacks and flowers and crosswords.” Clive: “Sudokus, but I’m happy to go back.” Michelle: “Of course you are and that’s why I wrote your name in on that form. You’re the man women want as the father of their child because in the worst case, there’s no doubt that Clive Babinaeux is going to show up and be a rock…”
6. Justin: “Look, Major. I love you. I do. I tried to support you but you took it too far. You were willing to sacrifice zombies for humans. How could you be so naive? You, Liv, there is no middle ground, Major. It’s us or them. It’s time to pick sides. You’re a zombie. I recommend you get on board the team.” Major: “I picked a side - good humans, good zombies, side by side.” Justin: “That’s not a side. That’s blowing out a candle, making a wish.”
7. Liv: “It’s all data, Ravi. I mean you could design a system. You’d have a mechanism to gather crime data, physical evidence, testimony, relationships, motive. A smart algorithm analyzes and voila.” Ravi: “Congratulations, you just invented the police.”

Overview:
You know when a show wants to get bigger and better for its final season and suddenly throws in a bunch of random subplots. That’s what these episodes feel like. Instead of sticking with its winning formula of great brain characters, these iZombie episodes went long on epic and short on fun. It makes the season feel cluttered and overcrowded, both introducing a bunch of new characters and bringing back old ones that should have stayed gone. We already have a nuclear threat, a human genocide plan, and a zombie extinction plan. Did we have to throw in Liv meeting her insane absentee father as well? He would have been just as superfluous as the Zombie Big Bad without Liv hemming and hawing over backstory, too. Major gets some good stuff to work with here, but Liv seems to be shunted off or stuck in an addict dad storyline that may work in the end but, for now, is tiresome.

Final Verdict: I look forward to finishing the series, but mostly in spite of these episodes.
Show: Flack
Episode: 1.01 - 2.02
Best Reason to Watch: Seeing Anna Paquin as London's Olivia Pope is more than enough for me
Best Character: Eve
Best Episode: Brand Barron (2.02), there's not much I could say without spoiling it, but Robyn is trying to stop hating herself and be better but she continues to struggle.
Worst Episode: Anthony (1.01), not bad by any means but with this first episode I just thought it would be a fun show to pass the time, and it's much more than that.
Overview: I love Anna Paquin and the idea of seeing her as a fixer had me sold immediately. I found it by chance (no idea why I didn't know about it sooner) and it turns out to be, not only addictively entertaining, but also a great character study on the messy trials of being a "functional" addict.
Show: Leverage
Episodes: 77
Best Reason to Watch: If you like a modern take on the Robin Hood tale, this is for you.
Best Character: Parker, her growth throughout the series is one to watch, perfectly encapsulated in the Series Finale.
Best Episode: The Grave Danger Job (4.07), this episode to this day gives me chills! This episode is the reason I will forever wish everyone sees this show.
Worst Episode: The Scheherazade Job (3.04), this episode left a little bit of a bad taste in my mouth because of the last scene.
Overview: Found family, these are the first words that come to mind when I think of this show. The relationship between a crew who'd never work together becoming family is one to marvel at and I can't recommend this show enough. There hasn't been one like it before. Sometimes bad guys make the best good guys.”
Show: Psych
Episodes: 120 plus the movie.
Best Reason to Watch: The characters, without them the show wouldn't work.
Best Character: Shawn Spencer, his arc throughout the show is great. He never loses who he is but he definitely becomes more grounded.
Best Episode: Mr. Yin Presents... (4.16) This show, without question, is insanely funny, but this episode was one of the most serious ones. It was still the show we fell in love with, but the tone was very dire. It still gives me chills when I think about it.
Worst Episode: Right Turn or Left For Dead (7.08). One thing I could always count on with this show is feeling happy, and this episode was not that. This episode was very somber and depressing and for that, I never will love it.
Overview: This is one of the best shows, period. The bromance, the hijinks, the romance - it has everything. Shawn and Gus' bromance is the best bromance I have ever seen, barely any other has beaten it. Even the theme song is meta and no one can hate this, so it is well worth it to watch this gem of a show.
Show: Work In Progress
Episodes: 1.01 - 1.08
Best Reason to Watch: The characters, especially Chris. Oh my lord. He is EVERYTHING.
Best Character: Hands down it has to be Chris. He is just the sweetest, most precious human being. Unfortunately for me, Abby is also up there as she was immensely relatable despite all of her intense flaws. I also really like Campbell and King.
Best Episode - 3, 2, 1 (1.08). Despite the finale wrecking me in every way, it was masterfully done and it made me clamour for another season, so it did its job well.
Overview: The acting is absolutely flawless, the dialogue intense and intriguing, the representation palpable and mesmerizing. An extremely captivating thrill ride from beginning to end, I felt the entire range of emotions while watching. It's a simple premise but it works so incredibly well due to the unique presentation of its cast of characters and experiences they share. If you like dramedies like BoJack Horseman, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Looking, Please Like Me, One Day at a Time, or others like it, you will LOVE this one.

Life, for better or for worse, always moves in one direction. It moves forward regardless of any one person's desires or regrets, enshrining mistakes and making memories as it goes. In a way, this is terrifying. The idea of every one of us being subjects to a process we cannot hope to reverse is, especially in a climate like today's, one of the most unsettling aspects of the human condition. It means, as tiny decisions cascade into sea changes, we abandon the lives we could have lived and take a path that's constantly branching out.

And, eventually, we have to accept our submissiveness - life wouldn't happen if we didn't. Ultimately, we have to go with the tide and move forward. But it's always tempting to disregard that just for a moment, and look back instead. What if we had done something different? What if we'd met someone different? Would we be the same people we are today? How much of life is just random chance, and how much is written in stone?

Or to put it in a more sci-fi way, what about those alternate timelines?

There are so many episodes of Community, a sitcom that has now spent two years in the big TV graveyard in the sky, that warrant a deep dive - Advanced Dungeons and Dragons, Paradigms of Human Memory, Intermediate Documentary Filmmaking, Modern Warfare are just a few of the genuinely outstanding episodes this show produced in six seasons.

But Remedial Chaos Theory is the one I keep coming back to. It feels like the quintessential Community episode - an incredibly simple sitcom premise (the group argues over who gets pizza) executed in a brilliantly clever and slightly nerdy way (alternate timelines!) that's both utterly hilarious and nakedly emotional. It's intricate and tricksy yet very sentimental. It stops to laugh at every character, but ultimately decides to laugh with them. The show had never found, and would never find, a better way to express itself.

As with every good concept of Community, the atypical premise is secondary. The idea of alternate realities and viewing the same events from new perspectives is clever, but derives pretty clearly from a long tradition of 'Rashomon' episodes such as The X-Files' Bad Blood or Jose Chung's From Outer Space, so the episode doesn't draw attention to it - it introduces the sci-fi idea with a quick line and then gets on with what it's really here for, which is character and comedy.

Remedial Chaos Theory threads a difficult needle that Community managed throughout season two but struggled to after this episode, which is expressing deeply human, mundane ideas through the language of science-fiction. If you lay out what actually happens in the episode, it's the group going to a dinner party and eating pizza while laying out a few personal conflicts. But through the seven timelines explored across Remedial Chaos Theory, that mundanity develops into something richly insightful and intricate - an opportunity to see the characters we've grown to appreciate over the last fifty or so episodes in a way that linear and conventional storytelling could never allow.

It's that opportunity to see that forms the backbone of the character material in Remedial Chaos Theory. Interestingly, for such a significant episode, there's not actually that much character development. There are a few realisations and small changes to the ongoing status quo such as Annie starting to think of moving in that stick, but for the most part, everyone is the same going into Troy and Abed's house as they are at the end of the credits. It's no surprise that, after seeing their dynamic torn up and moved around six times, the actual timeline reinstates and reinforces the central relationships of the group as we've always known them.

Instead of questioning and challenging the characters on a fundamental level, as Dan Harmon's other show, Rick and Morty, loves to do, Remedial Chaos Theory celebrates them by showing the study group in their most archetypal form. Each character's strengths and weaknesses are meticulously teased out and shown in relation to each other - Britta's honesty helps Troy in one timeline but destroys Shirley's confidence in another, while Pierce's competing desires to build up and knock down Troy form one of the episode's central points of tension, reflecting the strength and depth of the development they've undergone in the past couple of seasons and returning to Community's original selling point as the chance to see a collection of walking trainwrecks slowly learn to be better.

For all of the individual character arcs we get here, Remedial Chaos Theory is primarily interested in how each member slots into the group and forms an indispensable part of a uniquely messy whole. What's fascinating about this is that the episode never outright states how each member's absence affects the group - it forces the viewer to fill in the gap, to question whether the conflicts presented are an innate thing that are bigger than any one person, or a direct cause of the absence of whoever chooses to get pizza.

Sometimes, the episode is particularly subtle about this. Annie's timeline is basically a trial run that lays out the whole scenario for the rest of the timelines to show altered, but the changes brought on by her absence are minute (there's a sense that, maybe, she brings warmth to the group?) and it's clear that nothing has changed all that much in the group by the end.

On the other end of the scale, the absences of Troy and Abed, arguably the two most distinctive personalities in the group, cause the entire situation to melt down, either figuratively (Abed's role in drawing the sting from the group's emotional drama is made abundantly clear when the group's conflicts boil over as he leaves) or literally (Troy's timeline is still one of the flat-out funniest sequences this show ever did).

And then there's the ones in the middle - Pierce's timeline sees some group members get a bit closer even at the expense of others - that force us to wonder whether each member of the group is indispensable after all. It's this nuance and openness to interpretation that makes Remedial Chaos Theory such a rewarding character study, as it refuses to make didactic statements on these characters, instead trusting the audience to apply their own knowledge and biases to the characters they've grown to love or hate. There's something here for every type of Community viewer, regardless of their outlook on the show.

But for all these insights into the characters, Remedial Chaos Theory is defined most clearly by being absolutely hilarious. That's the second benefit of the alternate timelines - it allows for elaborate and unusually structured jokes that only Community could tell. Troy's timeline is a perfect example of this, as it allows virtually every loose end or object of vague importance to play into the chaotic domino effect that unfolds, from boulder to gun to cigarette to troll doll, but there's dozens of exceptional jokes here that play out in a huge variety of ways.

One thing that's a constant across the episode, whether it's character development or comedy, an underlying element of sincerity that's easy to miss until it becomes the dominating mood right at the end. Objects of humour such as the troll doll or the Indiana Jones boulder, or running gags like Pierce's Eartha Kitt obsession (he never gets to tell it in the prime timeline, suggesting his pathological need for attention has been sated here), have a darker undercurrent that eventually unfurl as the episode plays out every conceivable scenario.

Characters who are usually easy to laugh at all reveal their own inner conflicts or value as people, such as Troy's struggle to compete as an adult or Abed's choice that saves the group from the chaos of alternate timelines at the end.

And, in the episode's defining moment, the throwaway joke of Britta singing and getting shut off plays out fully and becomes the thing that papers over all of the cracks shown across the different timelines. It's an unabashedly feel-good ending, a far cry from the nihilistic uncertainties of Rick and Morty, and it's easy to label it as cheesy and rote, a way to reduce the complications of the characters to a stock resolution. But the optimism of the ending is precisely what makes it special. Community's humour often plays out under several layers of irony, and rarely takes its characters seriously, but it's ultimately a show that wears its heart on its sleeve.

Like Jeff, or Abed, the two characters who form the show's voice, Community cares about people deeply, even if it's sometimes afraid to show it. It examines and criticises the co-dependency that can cause unstable and emotionally fraught friendships, but also celebrates what it can bring to a bunch of lonely and messy people who don't work so well on their own.

It's about not caring whether something is cool or not, and just taking part in what feels right, and good with others by your side, even if it makes you look as drunk and confused as the people in the image to my left. Does that show have room, then, for someone like Jeff, a character predicated on ironic detachment and reticence to actually commit to people? Remedial Chaos Theory isn't sure. Its final, and most complicated statement is that the character that appears most crucial to the show might be the one who exists outside of it. We can celebrate the cleverness of the episode's sci-fi concepts and admire its humour, but its ability to constantly reevaluate and challenge what we know about deeply familiar characters we like is what made Community so involving in the long run, even through its rough spots, and the show never did it better than it did here.

Reviving “Community” has been a costly adventure for Yahoo — and might spell the end of its foray into big-budget original series.

CFO Ken Goldman revealed during Yahoo’s third-quarter earnings call Tuesday that the company took a $42 million charge on “Community” and two other original series as it couldn’t effectively monetize the programming.

Yahoo recorded a $42 million impairment charge in Q3 on the value of its video assets, and Goldman specifically singled out “Community,” as well as original shows “Sin City Saints” and “Other Space,” when asked what went wrong. Writing off the cost of the shows — $41.699 million to be precise, according to Yahoo’s financial statements — removes them from the balance sheet so they won’t be amortized over time.

“We thought long and hard about it, and what we concluded is (for) certain of our original video (series), we couldn’t see a way to make money over time,” he said.
Here is a response from Yahoo.

Community isn’t dead yet. At least that’s what Yahoo is saying after being compelled to respond to quotes from series star Joel McHale in a just-out magazine interview that the series was finished for good after its sixth season wrapped last month on the streaming service. “We’ve seen tremendous value in our partnership with Sony and are continuing to discuss future opportunities for Community,” Yahoo said in its statement today.

Joel McHale reported the show's demise in an interview with Metro Weekly.

MW: Is it getting another season on Yahoo?

McHALE: No. They wanted to. But all of our contracts were up after six years. All the actors on the show, almost without exception — their stock has risen significantly and it’s out of the pay rate that is affordable to make the show. So you’re not going to be able to get Alison Brie or Gillian Jacobs at a normal television salary anymore. There is just not enough money to be able to pay for the show.
Pablozky21: Community had its (series?) finale and it was all I could have asked for. The sweetest and most heartwarming moment came when everyone gathered around the old study room and Jeff told them that he is grateful for the time he had with them, that they saved him, saved his life and that he loves them all. It was tender and bittersweet as we know Annie and Abed are leaving town, but they are evolving, and we know that those who stayed behind will be fine, because they still have each other. Life may be pulling them apart, but even then the effects of spending so many years together stick, and in that regard they'll always be with each other. That's what that powerful scene portrays, and that's the best way to put Community to bed... until the movie comes out. Also picked by A Dahne
Justyna K: For a week I was excited to see Tyrion and Dany's interactions and they were absolutely brilliant. I was so sure their conversation will end up being my scene of the week until the final 15 minutes of the episode. That was a truly spectacular sequence! Kudos to every single person responsible for creating it! It was completely unexpected, powerful, intense and so very memorable. My favorite part had to be Jon's fight with the White Walker. Now, that's a great sword! Loved the moment when they both realized that the Valyrian Steel couldn't be broken. Sadly, despite this one great win, there was no chance to win this battle. In fact, the better word for this attack would be a massacre. Watching this horrifying defeat really makes you see everything else happening on the show in a different perspective. The biggest threat is now so close it feels like the winter has finally come. It's the scenes like this one that make the show impossible not to watch. It's hard to imagine anything more significant than the events in Hardhome happening in the final episodes of the season but I can't wait to see what's next.
Sandi: Episode eight is the new episode nine it seems! All hell broke loose north of The Wall when the Night King sent his Wight army to attack the village of Hardhome just as Jon and Tormund attempt to talk the last of the Wildlings into joining them. It looks stupendous for a TV budget and I am truly amazed at what can be achieved in 25 days with only 300 extras. Each and every person involved in the making of that sequence deserves full credit for pulling it off. Highlights from it obviously include Jon's fight with the White Walker, Wun Wun the giant and poor Karsi being taken down by the Wight children. Also picked by Darth Locke
Nirat Anop: I loved the look on Jon & the White Walkers face as the White Walker realised his Valyrian Steel sword couldn't be broken, priceless.
Pablozky21: Tyrion and Daenerys' conversation - I've been waiting for this to happen all season long; two of my favorite characters meeting up and proving that together they could be a fearsome force to mess with. I like how it went down, it felt really natural, it seemed like Tyrion and Daenerys had an instant rapport and it shows, as Daenerys decides to have Tyrion advicing her. It's a sweet moment in which we are reminded that things are going to move forward, Daenerys is not going to stay in Mereen forever, the show will keep going on, and we have an awesome duo joining forces. What could be better than that?
Tonya Papanikolas: Anthony Dimmond comes to dinner at Hannibal and Bedelia's house. There was so much tension throughout this scene, I loved it! Bedelia was very afraid of what was going to happen, making it obvious how much of a hold Hannibal has on her. And Hannibal seemed to be amused by the whole situation. Like Bedelia, we don't know what Hannibal is going to do. On top of that we had Bedelia learning (if she didn't already know) that Hannibal is making her tasty because he plans to eat her. And then we had the funny lines where Anthony takes the "taste" comments a very different way, and they have to let him know it's not that kind of party. That was amusing. There were so many great things about this scene!
Darth Locke: In the process of killing Anthony Dimmond, Hannibal confronts Bedelia on her role, asking if she will be an observer or an active participant.
Sandi: Keeping secrets from her friends hasn't worked out well for Liv at all these last couple of episodes, but it has set the show up for one hell of a finale next week, which is what matters I guess. The fight here was terrific, I originally thought that Peyton was conveniently knocked out so that she would miss Liv's full on zombie mode. So having her witness the end of struggle, and Liv attempting to come clean about her (un)life was a pleasant surprise. I wonder if they will be reconciled this season, or if it will be carried over for next year. Also picked by A Dahne
Sandi: It seems so long ago that these two were being held by Henrik and the Prolethean's, even though it's technically only been a couple of months at most. They have a complicated past, but appear to have a close bond and understanding that Gracie will probably never share with any of the other clones. On the surface this reunion was very touching and sweet, and I would like to believe that it was genuine as it seemed. I can't shake this nagging concern that Helena's trusting nature towards her new friend could mean her guard is down when it comes to keeping her secret babies safe however. I hope that I am proved wrong here, but I still don't count Gracie as part of the Clone Club just yet.
Tonya Papanikolas: This was a funny scene. Tatiana Maslany was great as Helena. Just the way she looked at Donnie made me laugh, and the way she said her lines, hitting on Donnie, was hilarious. He didn't quite know what to think. It was great. He was flattered and liked it and returned the humor yet thought she was weird, too. And the way she laughed as he walked out of the room was pure Helena!
Nirat Anop: I couldn't stop laughing at how Donnie responded "so maybe we need two baby ox." and Helena's laugh, and how she kept laughing after he left the room was wonderful.
Darth Locke: Helena exults on Donnie's attractiveness, while he is trying to teach her to how make soap.

Owen Bush: Riley and the bloodbath that encounters at the end of an early episode, this direction was so intense, moving, and disturbingly truthful. The emotion was there and the Wachowskis are flexing their hands a little, getting a grip around the audience ready to begin to answer some of the dangling questions this show holds. Sense8 is very unique, and is refreshing to see. Although it has flaws, these scenes, like this one, are staggeringly emotional and raw - and I can't wait to see more.

THE MESSENGERS, "A House Divided", June 5, 2015, Actors: Lauren Bowles and more
The Scene: The horsemen try to cut Satan out of the Apocalypse
A Dahne: I've had some bad bosses, but none of them were literally Satan. To band to together for a hostile takeover from Lucifer takes a lot of nerve. Yikes! Lucifer's reaction was quite spectacular too.

THE WHISPERS, "X Marks the Spot", June 1, 2015, Actor: Kyle Harrison Breitkopf, The Scene: Claire Bennigan's deaf son talks to Drill
Tonya Papanikolas: Claire Bennigan's deaf son is suddenly speaking - to Drill! I thought this was a great scene in the first episode. It caught me off guard. And it also let you know how much power this "thing" has, whatever it is. It can grant a deaf child back his speech, asking something dangerous in return. And the "thing" has now infiltrated the house of the FBI agent who is investigating it. It really set up the danger and intrigue for the following episode. Great surprise!

WAYWARD PINES, "One of Our Senior Realtors Has Chosen to Retire", June 4, 2015, Actors: Matt Dillon and more, The Scene: The ending
Nirat Anop: Ethan reveals that he thinks Nurse Pam is better suited for the role of sheriff and gets ready to leave Wayward Pines. One of the best lines Nurse Pam delivers is, "You might have fooled everyone else but I’m a registered Nurse". Melissa Leo steals every scene she's in and this is one of the many. I do worry a bit what might happen in Ethan's leave under the rule of Nurse Pam: Mayor. Following this Ethan climbs the mountainside to leave Wayward Pines for help and we are teased with the face of an unusual creature (something slightly reminiscent of a Sleepy Hollow creature), I have no idea what it wants or what it is but I cannot wait for next weeks episode.

YOUNGER, "Hot Mitzvah", June 2, 2015, Actors: Sutton Foster, Nico Tortorella
The Scene: Liza tells Josh the truth about her age and he bails
A Dahne: I didn't expect Younger to go there this season so it was a real shock that they did. It was also a good thing for the story. For someone who preached honesty to Kelsey, Liza has been anything but honest. Here's hoping the fall out isn't too traumatic though.
