I have a request for the TV-watching public in 2023: let shows end. Please, let them end.

By-and-large, there are two ways a show ends. Cancelled by the network earlier than the creators planned, offering the potential dissatisfaction of an open ending: no resolution, perhaps even a cliffhanger. It has always happened over the years, but within the last decade we’ve seen a marked increase in fan campaigns to revive those abruptly-cancelled shows. Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Timeless are among those which have succeeded – although I’ve always remained sceptical about how significant a contribution such campaigns are versus the desire of the production studio.

To be clear, I am not criticising the desire to continue shows in situations such as this. Hell, I wrote columns asking for the renewal of One Day at a Time (which happened) and begrudging the cancellation of Brooklyn Nine-Nine (only for NBC to revive the show barely 36 hours later) – and that’s in spite of the fifth season being so clearly written towards a satisfying conclusion should the worst happen.

No, my grudge here is with those who call for the return in some form of a show ended on the creator’s terms, in a way which appeased fans (or at least some of them) and which complete the narrative journey.

No more of that. Please.

Unless a show kills every single character, there’s always room to bring something back. Questions over how Character X will go on living their life after the events of Finale Y. How will they cope? What will they do now? Will there be more entertaining hijinks for them to experience?

Of course, there are answers for these questions, and they could be provided. But for how long can it be sustained? How many shows outlive their worth with fans reflecting that it should have ended years before?

I have two recent examples, one of which inspired this column. The first, and the inspiration, is The Americans – FX’s Russian spy thriller which deserves its place in the pantheon of the greatest shows ever made. The second is Better Call Saul, Breaking Bad’s masterpiece spin-off which arguably surpassed the quality of the original series.

(Note that there will be some spoilers about both series finales, so skip the next two paragraphs – falling between the two images – if you don’t want to read those.)

With Saul, its mere existence was a huge risk to the legacy of Breaking Bad, which had struck gold for AMC and was rightly touted in the same greatest of all time circles as The Sopranos and The Wire. Saul is at the very least on par with its mothership, but there was a big element of luck: first that James McGill was too fascinating a character to shift to Saul Goodman after one season, as was originally the plan, and then that Rhea Seehorn proved to be the generational star she is as a beautifully compelling Kim Wexler. Cut to six seasons later and a stunning finale, where you could easily wonder what Kim will do after the potential civil suit looming against her; or we could delve back to the earlier years and watch more of Gus and Mike’s cartel antics. But why?

The Americans’ finale was perfection, start to finish. Yet over the weekend I read a comment wanting to know what happened after the finale: what came next for Philip and Elizabeth in Mother Russia? Did he get to see Martha again? What did Henry and Paige do as effective orphans? Was Stan’s girlfriend Renee a KGB agent?

In particular, around that The Americans comment, was a suggestion that they should consider continuing “this magnificent franchise.” This, in particular, is a source of frustration.

We seem to live now in a world where everything is a franchise, whether it is or not. Marvel’s endless stream of content is a franchise. Star Wars is a franchise. Shows and movies that exist on their own are not franchises, and we as a media-consuming public should not ever consider them such. Doing so devalues each independent production as something which can or should only exist as part of some wider media; that failing to do so makes it lesser in some way. Creatives should be allowed to design something that stands alone from anything else on the market, without pressure or expectation to expand it further.

The desire to see shows return in some capacity after fulfilling endings, whether with more seasons of the show as known, or as a spin-off featuring key players – or in some cases a mix of the two – is damaging to the industry. Friends is one of the most successful shows of all time; spin-off Joey was panned by critics and pulled from the air midway through its second and ultimately final season. Trying to catch lightning in a bottle is extremely difficult – the Friends/Breaking Bad contrast show us that.

Then there is something like CSI: Vegas. I grew up watching plenty of the three original entries in the CSI franchise (Crime Scene Investigation, Miami, New York), which later introduced the pitiful Cyber. Though the spin-off/follow-up/partial revival of the Las Vegas-based original series, which started it all in 2000, features characters reprising their roles, at what point does it lose the value of its attachment to the franchise? A conglomerate like Marvel flexing its several thousand characters could, in theory, roll on forever. Original TV shows do not have this luxury and should not consider that they do.

Let us also consider the viewing impact of endless intertwining. Do too much beyond the original run of a show and you risk potential new fans – those who can, like you, revere shows for many years beyond the need to worry about viewer ratings – deciding that they can’t commit to the whole thing. Anyone with a job, education and/or social life would need at least a year to watch from scratch every product in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

It is said that if you love something, then let it go. In the case of scripted media, it’s fitting. Shows that end on the right terms and in ways you love should be let go. No pushing for needless revivals or reunions or spin-offs. Let them live on through the passion of the fans who champion them years after their conclusion, who tirelessly tell their friends and anyone else who will listen that they must watch them. There will always be something new to fall in love with – but only one misstep can tarnish the legacy of something you already adore.

Walker reached the third round on debut last year and returns today to face The X-Files, which is back in the competition after a two-year absence.

Only six episodes of The Winchesters have aired but the franchise has heritage in this competition, so it’s no surprise to see the Supernatural prequel feature. Its opponent, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, was a bronze medalist on its debut appearance in 2017 and has reached the quarter-finals four out of five times.

Motherland: Fort Salem didn’t back up its 2020 quarter-final, with a first-round exit last year. Abbott Elementary is its opponent today, on debut at the first attempt.

Charmed is included today and, for the purposes of clarity, this is the series which ran from 2018 to 2022. The original, 1998 series, had featured just once in the past five years. Today, The CW’s series faces Chicago Fire, which reached the second round in 2021 - the first time in its third attempt.

Another of the Chicago shows is up next - PD was 17th on debut last year. Curiously, it finished just one place above Fire. It faces Prison Break today, the FOX show making its third appearance since the 2017 revival.

And we end with two more fresh faces: The Sex Lives of College Girls and Outer Range. Neither show existed when we ran last year’s competition.
UPDATE: 27 June, 15:15 ET - Thanks to Allan Veríssimo for pointing out in the comments that I made a mistake, and Prodigal Son's episode aired outside of the eligibility window. The poll featuring New Amsterdam's "No Ifs, Ands or Buts" will be replayed with an eligible episode tomorrow. Apologies for the inconvenience.

So, on we go!

The nomination period is complete and we have our top 32. Plenty of popular shows received so many entries, but remember, only the top two per show get in. New Amsterdam and Magnum P.I. occupy the top four nomination spots between them.

To the draw, then. The draw was done so that the top four seeds (in bold) cannot face each other until the semi-finals. The rule introduced in 2016 remains which means a show is permitted to face itself at any stage of the competition - and indeed we get that with an all-Stranger Things affair in round one.

25 shows are represented this year, which is impressive given only 32 episodes make the competition proper. As mentioned, New Amsterdam and Magnum P.I. take up the top four spots and there were plenty more nominations for other episodes. The competition's wide open though - what will happen in the voting stages?

The rules are as follows:
1. Four episodes go head to head for 24 hours, going live and closing at 12pm ET each day. The episode that emerges as the winner of each poll will go through to the next round.
2. Vote for your favourite episode, and tell us what you voted for.
A monthly feature in which we're trying to find the most compelling, best acted, written, directed and just generally great, memorable scenes that we've seen in the past month on TV.

AMERICAN HORROR STORY: DOUBLE FEATURE, "Gaslight", September 15, 2021, Actors: Sarah Paulson, Macaulay Culkin, The Scene: TB Karen kills Mickey
Lucas: TB Karen kills Mickey, paints her magnum opus, and walks into the ocean. Though this episode was a rollercoaster filled with phenomenal performances, Sarah and Macaulay deliver a very special scene. His devoted, twisted love, her sacrifice, their pain and tragedy, all of that was very intense to watch. Also, despite of her lack of screentime, Karen became so meaningful to me. And that's wonderful. One of the best AHS scenes in years, in my opinion.
Justyna: There's a few great moments to highlight from the final episodes of the show. Since the vow renewal ceremony is already included, let me also mention the last exchange between Jake and Holt. The ending itself felt bittersweet in some aspects, but I wanted to give a shout-out to one of my favorite duos from the series and one last callback to the show's beginning. Holt acknowledges how much they've both changed since their first meeting and the fact that Jake finally figured out how to grow up. He's proud of the person that Jake's become and his words clearly mean the world to Peralta who's been looking up to Holt for years and considers him a father figure. They're both emotional, but display strength in their vulnerability and the actors play that balance beautifully. Holt even gets the final joke and that warm and genuinely happy smile at the end is perfect. I will definitely miss this show. Very glad that I've followed this journey from the beginning till the end. Kudos to cast & crew for all their work on the series.
Alejandra: Vows renewal ceremony - Kevin and Holt are the purest dads ever.
Folie-lex: Kevin and Raymond get the perfect redo for their wedding... Doesn't matter that they're in a rush to deadline or that they're each wearing silly costumes. They surround themselves by family (i.e. the squad) and the words they share are heartfelt and beautiful.

CHICAGO FIRE, "Head Count", September 29, 2021, Actors: Jesse Spencer, Kara Killmer
The Scene: Casey tells Brett she's amazing
Beth: After so much hesitation last season, it is just beautiful to see Casey and Brett as a full blown couple. The two characters just seem happier now that they are together and it is a wonderful thing.

Joanna: Opening parking lot scene where they are looking at Dr. Choi's parking space. This scene really shows how Dr. Archer has no insight into his actions and his immense bias towards mental health patients and Dr. Charles. He tries to lay blame on Dr. Charles for Choi being shot because he didn't put the patient on a psych hold when it was him completing surgery on the patient that was the cause of his outburst. I also love how they have Dr. Charles push back in his strong and restrained way by having him mention that the gun was pointed at Archer, not him, when Ethan was hurt. Great way to show their growing tension and nice way for the writers to continue to develop and vilify Archer in the eyes of the viewer.

Jessica C: If you've heard random squeals of excitement over the last few weeks, I'll take responsibility because Upstead is engaged!! Every time we're gifted with Upstead milestones, it feels like my love for them grows tenfold. And witnessing Jay getting down on bended knee in front of Hailey is certainly no different! Hailey explained that he gives her life a sense of normalcy and stability and that she wants to be married to him while Jay shared that he's known he wants all of the same things with her for years! They protect their relationship and are very intentional when expressing how they feel and what they want which speaks not only to how deeply they love one another, but how important the relationship is to both of them. No matter what obstacles may be ahead, that kind of love is too strong to shatter. Jay & Hailey are in this thing forever!

DOOM PATROL, "Vacay Patrol", September 23, 2021, Actors: Diane Guerrero, April Bowlby, Skye Roberts and more, The Scene: "Forever Young" dance
Elvis: As "Forever Young" by Alphaville starts playing in the background suddenly Kay (in the Underground) starts to move to the rhythm of the song with Jane following on the surface and in mere seconds she is joined by Rita, Cliff and Victor. (Larry's absence was felt). This dance scene was so extraordinary and it came at the right moment after the team faced some very bleak and depressing events. Even though this beautiful scene was cut short by a tragic ending, it felt so good to see the team so happy and connected. "Forever Young" is that one song that absolutely melts my heart so to hear it on one of my favorite TV series is an absolute wining combo. This scene is definitely joining my "best scenes of Doom Patrol" list.

LEGENDS OF TOMORROW, "The Fungus Amongus", September 5, 2021, Actors: Caity Lotz, Jes Macallan and more, The Scene: Avalance's wedding
Alejandra: Sara and Ava's love saves the day as it should.

LUCIFER, "My Best Fiend's Wedding" & "Goodbye, Lucifer", September 10, 2021, Actors: Tom Ellis, Lesley-Ann Brandt, Inbar Lavi and more, The Scenes: Lucifer says goodbye to Maze & Maze and Eve's wedding
Justyna: It's incredibly hard to choose just one final scene to highlight from the series' last season. So much has happened in these ten episodes that would be worth mentioning. In the end, I decided to go with Lucifer's goodbye with Maze. It's a surprising choice when I realize that these two didn't share too many memorable scenes since the show's early days. Despite their centuries-long friendship, it feels like they actually took a step away from each other a while ago and their relationship was never really the same after that. But in this moment, their history together felt more present than ever. Of all the goodbyes this felt like the most permanent and emotional one and both actors delivered wonderful performances during this last exchange. Both Lucifer and Maze are starting a new life that leads them in the opposite directions. And even though he can't exactly admit this is a goodbye, it's clear that she knows. Maze realizes the importance of this moment and it hits her much harder than she's willing to admit. The two aren't known for hugging people which is why the embrace between them means so much more. "I don't want you to worry about me anymore." "I wouldn't have any of it if it weren't for you." "You are my best friend, Maze. I just wish I'd always treated you that way before." These lines got me the most. Especially with the two trying to hide their emotions and tears behind a smile and a joke. Until they finally part ways... Also, a special shout-out to Ella confronting everyone at the wedding reception and Dan finding a way to talk to Trixie. Another two beautiful and heartbreaking moments. Kudos to cast & crew for all their wonderful work on the show.
Alejandra: Mazeve Wedding - Maze finally being with someone who chooses her made my heart very happy.

MIDNIGHT MASS, "Book III: Proverbs", September 24, 2021, Actors: Kristin Lehman, Hamish Linklater, Annarah Cymone and more, The Scene: The miracles sequence
Lucas: The Holly Holy sequence - miracles start to happen all over town. It’s the calm before the storm. Every character is happy, everyone is healing, things are changing for the better, love is in the air, and there’s a cheerful song by Neil Diamond playing. Midnight Mass might be a dark show, but I think this scene is really beautiful, and I love every second of it.

MONEY HEIST / LA CASA DE PAPEL, "Vivir muchas vidas" (Live Many Lives)", September 3, 2021, Actors: Úrsula Corberó and more, The Scene: Tokyo's death
Alejandra: I am never going to emotionally recover from this.

ONLY MURDERS IN THE BUILDING, "The Sting", September 7, 2021, Actors: Steve Martin, Amy Ryan, The Scene: Charles and Jan flirt with music across the courtyard
Folie-lex: As Charles and Jan each play their instruments across the courtyard, they prove that old people flirting is so cute.

RICK AND MORTY, "Rickmurai Jack", September 5, 2021, Voiced by: Justin Roiland, The Scene: Evil Morty's plan succeeds
Justyna: This final story of the season certainly took me by surprise. I was glad we finally learned Rick's backstory but it's the President Morty's plan and actions that stole the show for me. President Morty, or rather Evil Morty (as named by the fans) reveals that all he's ever wanted is to get away from the portion of the multiverse where Rick is the smartest man alive and finally be free of his restrictions. Years ago, following the death of his family and his unsuccessful search for the killer, Rick helped build the Citadel and walled off his own multiverse, creating the Central Finite Curve. A place where Mortys are supplied and many Jerrys and Beths across the multiverse are pushed to fall in love. This Morty feels trapped in the endless nightmare created by our Rick. "He's attached to us infinitely through his weakness and our forgiveness." President Morty chooses to leave, tired and sick of Rick, by any means necessary, thus making him Evil Morty. He is certainly causing a lot of pain and death around him and is far from a good guy, but I really enjoyed the fact that his plan was never about destruction or conquest, or even beating Rick, but rather setting himself and the multiverse free. The sequence where Morty's plan succeeds and he finally escapes as the "For the Damaged Coda" plays in the background, is perfectly done. Kudos!
Justyna: In the last week of September I decided to check out Netflix's latest hit - Squid Game. I've never seen a Korean TV show before this one, but knowing the general premise and being a fan of thrillers / action dramas, I figured it's about time to expand my horizons. To be honest, I'm definitely going to need a rewatch to process everything that's happened on the show. Such a wild and memorable experience. When it comes to highlighting just one scene from the first half of the season, I couldn't help but choose the first game when the true nature of the competition is revealed. There's definitely things prior to this moment that make you worried about what's about to happen but it's not until the first player is eliminated when the stakes and tension hit an insane level. We also watch our main characters as they struggle to survive the brutal massacre and learn some key information about them on their way to the finish line. Also, Ali saves Gi-hun in the most impressive way and it's hard not to get attached to at least some of these characters and root for their survival. Kudos to cast & crew for all the great work on the show!

TED LASSO, "Man City", September 10, 2021, Actors: Phil Dunster, Brett Goldstein, The Scene: Roy and Jamie hug
Chlöe: I'd never watched a single scene of Ted Lasso till this scene because it made such a massive splash on social media. Even though I had limited knowledge of the characters' arcs, this scene still made a huge impact with some great body language from Jamie Tartt as his father verbally abuses him in front of the team. Having now watched the entire series, the fact that it's Roy who goes to comfort him is perfectly framed considering his comments on Phoebe's father earlier in the episode and I will never forget the way Jamie flinched as Roy came over to him.
Folie-lex: Roy hates bullies more than anything in the world. It's why when Jamie's dad shows up and is a complete ass to his own son, suddenly Jamie being a twat is irrelevant. Roy does what he knows best and is comforting and kind. And for Jamie comfort from his childhood idol was maybe the best medicine... Phil Dunster's shock-shift-into-breakdown is brilliant, while Brett Goldstein as usual conveys everything in his body language and facial expressions.
Beth: After enduring the abuse his father has put him through his entire life, Jamie fought back and it was a VERY loaded moment. The entire team witnessed what Jamie has had to deal with and he stood alone and vulnerable after laying out his abuser, and then something amazing happened, he was shown comfort by the very last person you'd expect.... Roy. It doesn't mean they are besties, hell they probably still hate each other, but it doesn't matter because in that moment, it was just one human showing another kindness and understanding and it was beautiful.
Alejandra: Emotional chaos, best scene I have seen this year. Period.

THE MORNING SHOW, "It’s Like The Flu", September 24, 2021, Actors: Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, The Scene: The hallway fight
Giulia: The two anchors come to terms with what happened in the season 1 finale. The fight is raw and real; Bradley is very upset with Alex, because she just abandoned her and Alex realizes that she has to face the consequences of her actions, which are not all positive.

THE ROOKIE, "Life and Death", September 26, 2021, Actors: Alyssa Diaz, Melissa O'Neil, Eric Winter, The Scenes: Tim and Lucy share a "moment" & Angela talks to Jackson's grave
Folie-lex: Tim and Lucy have a "moment" - Under the most tragic of circumstances Tim and Lucy break that invisible physical barrier they have between them, as Tim offers Lucy the comforting hug she asks for... and the chemistry that fans have sensed since day one between them seems to be undeniable even to their characters anymore.
Beth: Angela talks to Jackson's grave. In an episode filled with devastation and heart pounding moments, this scene just felt comforting in a weird way. Yes, Angela was talking to Jackson's grave and it was heartbreaking, but she did it holding her newborn son, a baby that got to be home with both parents in part because of Angela's rookie Jackson. It was a great way to show that even though Jackson is no longer there, his life and spirit will live on in the people that loved him and in his namesake, Angela's son.

THE WALKING DEAD, "Out of the Ashes", September 19, 2021, Actors: Ross Marquand, Paola Lázaro, Michael James Shaw, The Scenes: Aaron's nightmare & Princess tells Mercer that he has beautiful eyelashes
Chlöe: This episode finally delivered on giving Ross Marquand screentime as Aaron is a severely underrated character on the show and gets so few moments to shine. I could have picked any one of his scenes for this, but the nightmare right at the beginning sets up the rest of the episode so well, it just pipped out the other scenes. It was a haunting sequence as he's confronted with all the demons and enemies he's encountered with the enemies overwhelming him after Gracie vanishes and is a great way to showcase his fear and the hopelessness that drives him to desperate measures to protect her and everyone else he cares about. It's heartbreaking to see him with such fear and guilt and anger at the world considering when we first met him, he was basically preaching the power of friendship.
Lisa: Princess tells Mercer that he has beautiful eyelashes.

TURNER AND HOOCH, "Witness Pup-tection", September 15, 2021, Actors: Josh Peck, Vanessa Lengies, The Scene: Erica and Scott act like dogs
Folie-lex: Erica drags Scott to the ground and makes him act like a dog just to get him to connect with his autistic witness. And we finally see Scott loosen up, and be fun and goofy and comfortable. It's an adorable scene that can't help but put a smile on your face.

WHAT IF...?, "What If... Doctor Strange Lost His Heart Instead of His Hands?", September 1, 2021, Voiced by: Jeffrey Wright, Benedict Cumberbatch, Rachel McAdams, The Scene: Dr. Strange begs for the Watcher's help
Lucas: Strange begs for the Watcher's help as the universe is destroyed and Christine dies in his arms - A powerful, tearful scene to end a dark episode. It’s the first time we see The Watcher talking to a character, in some interesting, well-written dialogue. Then, the world ends and Christine dies one last time, leaving Strange completely alone and broken. Truly memorable.

Y: THE LAST MAN, "Would the World Be Kind", September 13, 2021, Actors: Diane Lane, Ashley Romans, Ben Schnetzer, The Scene: Yorick and Jennifer are reunited
Giulia: Of course no one thought that Yorick would be alive, even his mother, so to see Jennifer be completely and utterly surprised, destroyed, emotional and happy to see that her son is alive was incredible. Diane Lane knocks it out of the park in that scene, showing us how amazing she is.
Marko: Once again Andre Braugher captures the screen with his stellar performance. As he gave life to the script he also was giving deeper context to his character and bringing me to tears as he unravels all the pain he was going through since the start of the pandemic.
Folie-lex: For all his great qualities Jake is often a selfish manchild. And taking Rosa quitting as a personal slight instead of bothering to look into the deeper implications of what it was about especially amidst the BLM movement, was unfortunately very on brand. Thankfully Rosa doesn't let him off the hook and schools him appropriately with a well deserved dress down.
Laura: The Monks, David and Ben find Kristen and Fenna a little drunk on the barley wheel. Ok, this is undoubtedly one of the best episodes of the show yet. It's building its mythology without yet explaining it, it was disturbing and hilarious without a lot of words, and it played on undefined romances with Kristen both towards David and Fenna. I would say Kristen's relationship with Fenna was one the most unexpected pleasures of the episode and these kinds of scenes where Ben and David (and sexist monks) are kind of catching her in schoolgirl antics just brought so much more bemusement to an episode that was mostly silent. Please tell us we will see Fenna and Kristen reunite at some point!!
Folie-lex: In the second outing of the reboot/sequel show, the always lovely François Chau plays a guest that Roselyn Sanchez's Elena has trouble connecting with. In this scene we also learn more about Elena's backstory, sure, but it's Mr. Lee who is still very much in love and mourning his fiance that keeps us interested. Roselyn Sanchez seems to know this as she gives François Chau the appropriate room to deliver a great perfomance as she encapsulates all the audience should be feeling in the moment.
Chlöe: The whole episode was leading to a charged explosive moment, especially with Ace spiralling as a result of the fight at the end of previous episode. The bar fight felt like a much needed catharsis, bringing the brothers together for a brief moment of unity. There is a great emphasis on family in the show and Jack and Ace having each others' backs for a moment and fighting together is a little bit of relief from all that pain and tension between them. I look forward to the show continuing to peel back the layers with the brothers. Alexander Ludwig and Stephen Amell have great chemistry and I can't wait to see their relationship develop!
Jessica C: This was a really thrilling and nuanced cliffhanger to close out the first season! When the sitcom lens was ripped away in this scene, we witnessed the dark side of Neil’s antics. The side of him that the comedy lens hides in all of the same ways that it hides Allison’s turmoil. If Patty hadn’t interfered, Neil could have easily killed Allison. Which makes me question all of Kevin’s and Pete’s actions and how sinister they would be in the drama lens. Neil is arguably the tamest of the three, I’m terrified to think what Kevin would be capable of. And also, Patty smashing a bottle over Neil’s head and telling him he won’t be saying a word to Kevin was incredibly satisfying.
Justyna: I've stumbled upon this show by chance. Haven't heard much about it and didn't plan to watch. And yet I ended up watching most of it in a couple of days. Each story was different, not all of them worked as well as the others, but I wanted to give a shout-out to one of my favorites - the story of love and grief from the second season's premiere. Stephanie Curran loses her beloved husband Michael, the father of her grown-up daughter and years later remarries another man named Niall, but still continues to hold onto the memory of her lost love through the car he left behind. She struggles with the idea of selling the car (per her new husband's request) throughout the episode and we watch a beautiful and heartbreaking montage of a love story between Stephanie and Michael, a lifetime they spent together around and in the car. Only after she sells it, she admits to Niall how much she misses her late husband and just how important this vintage car truly was to her. She used it to keep a connection to her past alive, choosing to remember what she had and lost, to keep a part of Michael alive. It was such an honest and powerful admission, a true portrayal of grief I rarely see on the screen. No stages of grief or moving on talk. What made the scene even more memorable is Niall's response. He understands her grief, shares his own way of keeping lost loved one close and even admits that the fact she has such a huge heart, with room for two great loves is one of the reasons he loves her. "It's love and grief, baby." Beautifully written and acted scene. And of course he goes to buy back the car for her in the very next one. Kudos to cast & crew for all their work on bringing this story to life in the show.
Laura: I'm enjoying Nine Perfect Strangers so far, and it's no surprise, really, that Michael Shannon is one of the biggest standouts. This episode let his character shine when we are led to believe that Tony would have been the one to snag the goat, given how angry Tony has come off and how apparently fractured Napoleon has been exposed to be. It's a shocking reveal, but even Nicole Kidman deserves some kudos here for trying to balance a character that is at first saddened, but then decidedly glad believing the "regimen" is working!
Prpleight: Sanders helps Michael with a little fatherly guidance and advice. Michael was fairly frustrated throughout much of the episode. Maria is in a coma, which he can do nothing about. He throws his energy into finding Kyle, but hits a roadblock. Alex is of no help. Michael is stuck. and his sense of failure over protecting Kyle and Maria isn't helping him think more clearly. Enter Sanders. Everyone seems to consider Michael's snippiness as 'that's just Michael' and usually responds to him as though he'd made a calm and polite statement. Sanders just snaps back. Watching this scene it occurred to me that they're like a pair of grumpy old men; like family. Knowing Sanders' history and his long held desire to take care of Michael, it just fit. It also made this scene special. Michael's investigation was stalled. Sanders talked him down then provided the different point of view that gave Michael the answers he needed. We're used to seeing Michael push away people who try to help him. It was really nice to see him accept help for a change, even if he was a little crotchety while doing it.
Alison D: On its own, it was a simple and beautiful moment for viewers - Alex talks Michael down from his spiral with fiery logic and an unmistakable, albeit coded, present tense declaration of love. Simple as the scene was, it was also filled with nuance, callbacks, and progress, delivering something genuinely great for all the Malex fans. And kudos to costume and lighting.
Luana: Michael was going on about how he's worthless because of his father and Alex reminds him where he stood on him being judged by the actions of his own father and stops him in his tracks. A wonderful moment of perspective and growth for these two.
DJRiter: In its first episode back and the first of its final 13 episodes Supergirl returned and leaned heavily on the aspect of the show that made it great to begin with, The Danvers Sisters and their emotional couch scenes. Their final couch scene, where the sisters opened up to one another (like never before showing how both characters have grown) about how Kara being in the Phantom Zone affected each other. It was a beautifully performed scene by stars Chyler Leigh and Melissa Benoist and solidified that the Danvers Sisters are the heart, soul and foundation of the show and should remain the focus of this final season.
Justyna: The season one of "Superman & Lois" has officially concluded so I can honestly say it's my favorite first season of any show in a while. The writing, the characters, the actors, the music, the visuals - all worked beautifully together to make this excellent story work. There are so many great scenes that I could have highlighted from last month, but in the end I decided to go with one of the most tense moments on the show so far. While I wouldn't allow myself to believe our Lois could die just like the other Lois from Irons' universe it didn't make it any easier to watch Leslie Larr targeting her on live TV. The reactions from Jonathan and Jordan alone, as they freeze for a second and realize the danger their mom is in, add to the intensity and importance of the scene. Of course Lois Lane would be there, reporting the news, even though she's putting herself at risk. And there's nothing she could do in the moment to defend herself. Luckily, John Henry Irons uses his hammer to stop Larr from a distance and saves Lois in the process. It would make sense to have Superman come to the rescue, but I loved that it was Steel who got to do that. He couldn't save his wife but at least his presence in this universe made a difference for our Lois. All the difference in the world. Wonderfully done, short but impactful moment. Kudos to cast & crew of the show for all their work on this fantastic series.
Folie-lex: Roy Kent may be in love with Keeley Jones but Lady Football (as Ted would say in a pinch) is his real soulmate. Therefore it's only appropriate that the ultimate climax of this rom-com homage episode ends with Roy, running back to his love, finding a little bit of himself again in the process. It's (as usual with this show) both beautiful and funny, and I dare anyone to listen to the "He's every-fucking-where" chant without tears in their eyes and a full blown smile in their face.
Laura: Marissa and Hal use a table and their bodies to barricade a door in the back room to protect themselves, as the alt right gang descends violently in Wackner's court! I have come a long way this season with a lot of mixed feelings, as the season is almost like a hard reset of the show, given how there was almost no known secondary characters from earlier seasons (or from The Good Wife) making appearances, but instead lots of new characters mostly centered around this Kangaroo Court(s). At times, it felt like a different animal. However, one of the brilliant great pleasures of the season was finally giving Marissa a deeper character arc and Steele's dynamics with Patinkin's new Judge Wackner was one not to be missed. I particularly enjoyed the exchange between them in this episode, while a microcosm of January 6th is happening all around them. For Marissa, whose character first appeared on The Good Wife, Wackner came off as a father figure in a way, as we already know that Eli was a bad father, or at least as this scene further plays off, he was in the emotional sense. But Marissa spouting off Eli's beliefs to Wackner kind of proves that, despite whatever emotional deficiency Eli may have had towards his family, he was not necessarily wrong in understanding the world he lives in and in teaching it to Marissa. And so, it was quite amusing seeing Marissa [once again] spouting the cynical wisdom of Eli and teaching Wackner a lesson in an almost dire situation, despite Marissa encouraging Hal to rule the right way. I don't know if Mandy Patinkin will return, but if not, I can't say that there wasn't perfect closure here with Marissa growing up and seeing the dynamic get role reversed.
Luana: I loved seeing Mandy Patinkin in this role and I loved how his court was steered to its only possible conclusion, if a bit extreme. It was the perfect way to show the possibilities, and the cherry on top was him putting his apron back on and just picking up the broom.

T'Challa Became a Star-Lord?", August 18, 2021, Voiced by: Chadwick Boseman, Josh Brolin and more, The Scene: The introduction of T'Challa's Ravagers family
Justyna: Easily my favorite of the episodes so far. I realize that there's been a lot of praise for the darker "What if" scenarios presented in the show (which is perfectly fine of course) but personally I loved watching this more hopeful universe (at least till that last scene) and the difference T'Challa made in the world. From the promotional materials shared prior to the series premiere I knew we will be introduced to this Ravager version of T'Challa, but I never imagined just how much of an impact his presence and influence would cause in the galaxy. The revelation that Ravagers have been reformed and are now inspired by Robin Hood stories was a brilliant twist on its own, but Thanos being one of them was something I never expected to see, not even in this "What if" multiverse. This scene in particular, where the ripple effects of Yondu's choice are truly introduced, left me both surprised and really excited for the rest of the story. Considering Thanos' motives back in the "Avengers: Infinity War" I have actually wondered a while ago whether there was anything that could have changed his mind. By his own description his ultimate goal was to save the universe, even despite all the damage and pain he's caused. So if someone found a better way to do that than eliminating half of all life in the universe, would he have listened? Turns out the answer is yes. For better or worse, we find out that in at least one of the universes T'Challa's heroism, intellect and kindness, his influence alone managed to change Mad Titan's mind. He still makes references to his plan throughout the episode, but he left his army behind and chose to do better, even developed a better relationship with his daughter, Nebula. Such an impactful change for the story of MCU overall. The Ravagers family of T'Challa being introduced was a brilliant twist, a funny and exciting moment that immediately captured my attention and made me enjoy this story so much more than I expected. The tragic thing about the episode though, it made me miss T'Challa's character (and his wonderful portrayer) even more. Thank you Chadwick, for everything. And kudos to cast & crew of this great series for all their work.

Charles: "A great true crime mystery unpeels itself like an onion." Oliver: "First the crime, then the characters, and then their secrets." Mabel: "The secrets are the fun part. Who's telling the truth? Who is lying? What are they hiding?" Charles: "Because, lets be honest. Sometimes it's easier to figure out someone else's secret, than it is to deal with your own."

4. Oliver: "I don't lock my door. Never have." Charles: "That's insane." Oliver: "It's neighbourly" Mabel: "I mean a murderer probably lives in the building, but I guess old white guys are only afraid of colon cancer and societal change. Sad."

5. Mabel : "I don't think being unlikable means he deserved to die." Oliver: "Well, no, no. I think w-w-what Charles is saying is for the podcast we're still looking for a way to care." Mabel: "He was alone. Isn't that enough to make us care?"

7. Charles: "Lets see if Mabel's free. I'll call her... Or should I text?" Oliver: "... Calls bother them for some reason." Charles: "Yeah... I think it's a text."

8. Teddy: "It would be nice if I had posters of the shows you talked me out of investing in. Les Mis?" Oliver: "Yeah, I know." Teddy: " 'It's such a downer, Teddy, and all over a loaf of bread' ?" Oliver "Well, it was." Teddy: "Mamma Mia. 'I didn't like ABBA when they were ABBA'." Oliver: "Yeah." Teddy: "Hamilton." Oliver: "They picked the one Founding Father with no pizazz. That was... wrong..."

9. Charles: "I'm sure it had some good moments." Oliver: "Well, at the end of the first act there was this amazing number where 12 mermen dove from a high pier into a pool built into the stage floor. But, the first night of previews, they'd been having problems with the hydraulics that lowered the floor. But I said... "Go for it'." Charles: "Uh, huh." Oliver: "And as each merman sang 'Make a splash...' they all dove down from the high pier, one by one. And I can still hear the sound of them all hitting the floor. Thwop! Thwop! Thwop! Thwop!" Charles: "All twelve?" Oliver: "All twelve. Chorus boys tend to stick together." Charles: "Well, you made a mistake. We all make mistakes...- No one died, right?" Boimler and Rutherford: "THAT'S A COMPROMISE!" Mariner: "Oh, boy. I'd say you guys should take up a less embarrasing hobby, but it might be too late."

2. Boimler: "You shouldn't have started that rumour. I mean 'kill anything in her way'? Why would you want people to think that?" Mariner: "Because it keeps jerks away from me. Boimler: "It just wasn't fun." Mariner: "Not enough famous admirals?" Boimler: "There were, but you weren't there to make fun of them with me... I'm sorry I left for the Titan the way I did. I guess I was worried you would talk me out of it. I didn't mean to hurt your feelings. I didn't even know you had feelings." Mariner: "Of course I do. I just don't show them to everyone. So I'm going to let my insecurities keep me from possibly finding my one true love"."

2. Dr.Fieldstone: "I was quite offended, by what you said about my profession... That just 'cause a therapist is being paid, they don't actually care. Let me ask you something. Would you coach for free?" Ted: "Yeah, I would." Dr.Fieldstone: "But do you?" Ted: "No, ma'am." Dr.Fieldstone: "And yet you care about your players, right?" Ted: "Yes, ma'am." Dr.Fieldstone: "Then why would you assume it's not the same for me? I don't assume that all coaches are macho dickheads." Ted: "That's a good point. Consider me dunked on."

3. Roy: "Hey Siri. Play the 'Roy is sorry for not understanding Keeley' playlist... I stole those roses from your neighbour's garden. Ripped them to shreds. And that, that's Phoebe's light so I'm gonna have to give that back or I'm gonna get it in the neck. And that, that's a foot scrubber or something. The woman said it's good if you've got gross feet." Keeley: "What? You think I've got gross feet?" Roy: "Babe, I think you're the cat's pyjamas, but your feet are a fucking state. But who am I to judge? I found so much of my hair down the drain, it looked like a rat got trapped and fucking drowned... Now, you are not gonna see or hear me for at least three hours." Keeley: "Thank you."

4. Bridget: "So he refuses to be vulnerable, right? Sounds like someone I know." Dr.Fieldstone: "Oh, stop it. Me and Coach Lasso are nothing alike." Bridget: "Sharon, you do the same thing. He uses humour to deflect, you use your intelligence." Dr.Fieldstone: "Please. I do not harness my savantish nature to alienate people and isolate myself... Okay, I hear that."

5. Roy: "You can't swear Phoebe." Phoebe: "But you swear all the time." Roy: "Yeah. And it didn't hold me back 'cause I'm a footballer. No one cares if we swear. It's part of the job. It's encouraged. But you can't be a doctor, or a teacher, or a...-" Phoebe: "Veterinarian for wild animals." Roy: "Or a veterinarian for wild animales. I still don't get how that works. What? You treat them in the woods and no one pays you? You know what? Doesn't matter, the point is you can't do that if you swear all the time... Look, you and I spend a lot of time together and I love every second. But I weren't trained in how to be around a kid. And sometimes... I get concerned... that I've been infecting you with the worst parts of me." Phoebe: "That's not true. Uncle Roy, you teach me great things. I called that boy a name because he's a bully. And because of you, I stand up to bullies... and referees. And I can do that without swearing." Roy: "Yeah. Because you are better than me." Phoebe: "I'm as good as the best you. Maybe we can stop swearing together." Roy: "Fuck you... I can't. But you can. Pretty please." Phoebe: "Okay Uncle Roy."

6. Ted: "Hey fellas, hold on a sec. I need to tell y'all something. Um. When I left the match against Tottenham, it--it wasn't 'cause, you know, my stomach was bothering me. It was 'cause I had a panic attack. I've been having them from time to time as of late, and I'm working on it. But, I just want y'all to know the truth. We good?" Higgins: "Oh, yeah." Roy: "Yeah." Nate: "Of course." Ted: "Okay, alright. Alright lets go get 'em. Richmond on three--" Higgins: "Wait! I need to confess something too. I messed up the time zones on our transfer deadline, which is why we didn't sign up that amazing fullback from Brazil." Nate: "Oh, my God." Ted: "It's okay." Beard: "Okay." Nate: "Okay." Ted: "Yeah, all good. That's alright, yeah. Okay here we go." Roy: "I don't read the scouting reports you guys write. I've lied every time they've come up. They're boring and I won't do it." Ted: "I appreciate that." Nate: "I pretend to get ideas in the moment, but they're just good ideas I've had for months. I just time them to look spontaneous." Higgins: "It's a good move." Ted: "Yeah. Illusion of the first time." Beard: "There was one game this season where I was accidentally on mushrooms." Nate: "Accidentally?" Beard: "I'd been at Jane's house and I drank tea from the wrong pot." Roy: "The Port Vale match?" Beard: "Yeah." Roy: "Yeah." Beard: "It won't happen again." Ted: "Thanks guys." Beard: "Thank you." Ted: "Alright lets go kick their butts." Beard: "Butts on three." Ted: "Works for me. One, two, three." ALL: "BUTTS!" Ted: "So you all fancy now, drinking tea, huh?" I just know."

Turner and Hooch - (Folie-lex)

1. Erica: "Why are you warning me?" Jess: "Maybe 'cause the last time [Scott] came over you agreed to dog-sit for him while he went out with another woman, girl." Erica: "No. No, 'cause what happened was that was an accident. I accidentally... I just I kind of offered without thinking...-" Jess: "Which is exactly why I'm calling to tell you to think about not doing that this time." Erica: "Do you think I should just tell him how I feel?" Jess: "What?! No. No, no, no, no. I've hear you talk about how you feel and you can't even make sentences." Erica: "Full sentences, maybe, but half sentences, I am rocking."

2. Xavier: "You know sometimes when I was standing post at night, I thought about you." Olivia: "Come on. You didn't even know me." Xavier: "Well I imagined perfection... so then I'd know you when I met you."

3. Scott: "Honestly, I just need him to howl. I don't care about his feelings."
Erica: "You don't... care about his feelings? You can't... Feelings are important. You can't just ignore them. You have to let him have his feelings. He can't bottle them up. Doesn't work. He needs to get them out. He should, no matter what anybody else says." Scott: "Erica, you're not really talking about Hooch anymore, are you?" Erica: "Maybe not. Maybe I'm talking about...-" Scott: "About me. That's it right? About my feelings. About Brooke's dad getting me this job. About being deputy in charge. And about feeling like this case is just wrong. I mean I can't ignore those feelings! Oh, you're amazing. Thank you. I gotta go. Okay."
Erica: "Okay... I was talking about me..."

4. Laura: "He doesn't look cool. He looks like a mean coach in a karate movie."

5. Scott: "I'd maybe ask Erica, but she's been so busy." Jess: "Oh, right. Uh, yeah. So, about... that... um... I maybe, kinda told Erica to make herself less available." Scott: "You told her not to talk to me?" Jess: "You were--you were taking her for granted. Calling her at all hours, skipping sessions 'cause of "work" or you and Miss Thing have opera tickets. So I just-I just told her to pull back a little, and she did. So I'm sorry. But also, like, not." Scott: "Not?" Jess: "Not, no. Yeah, not, 'cause, like dude. Come on. You-- you can't do that." Scott: "You're right. That was not good."

6. Erica: "I am calling about Hooch. Curtis had mentioned there might be a problem, and he heard you talking to Guy about some...-" Scott: "Yes, Erica. I-- I'm so sorry. I... I took you for granted. You're not my dog butler. You... I value your help, and your friendship and just you in general. And I have been selfish and a jerk. And I really apologise." Erica: "Oh, um. Thank you."

You can join via either the YouTube or Twitch links below. We look forward to all of you finding out who won in real-time. If you can't join live, the videos will be available immediately following the broadcast.

As per usual, the Staff side of voting was quite close with the ultimate winner not taking the lead until the very end. The Reader side, on the other hand, was a bit more interesting since the Top 5 all blasted out together separating themselves from the rest of the group of nominees very early on by substantial amounts. In the end, one nominee did break away from that group and surge to the lead where that spot was held until voting concluded. There was a lot of overlap this month between the Staff side and the Reader side. When that happens these performers are usually at the very top of their game and delivered very strong POTM worthy performances, this month was no exception. Who do you think won on both sides? Take some time to post your thoughts in the comments while you wait for the live announcement to start.

Thank you to everyone who turned out to vote and participate this
month. As usual, thank you to everyone who submitted comments. With each passing month, the submissions for comments keep getting better and better making it harder each round to pick just a single submission to honor each nominee.

Now, for the fun part, either join us live or check out the video below after the live broadcast has completed to see which of the
Top 5 from each group won in their competition. After you watch the video, drop down to the comments and let us know your thoughts regarding the winners and their amazing fellow nominees.

All of the performer comment slides and winner slides are available on Twitter and Instagram.
