As we approach the final days of 2019, end of year TV lists become all the rage, particularly the list of best shows from the past 12 months.

Here at SpoilerTV, we have just over 80 team members, so rather than asking just one or two people to submit opinions, we compile a collective list from whomever among the team wishes to air their thoughts.

63 of our team submitted their top ten shows of the year, and below is the combined top 20.

From a combined 344 shows, 186 unique shows were chosen somewhere in a top ten list by at least one team member, giving a real diversity to our list.

Without further ado, here's our top 20. Let us know in the comments what you think of the list? What shows are you surprised made the Top 20, what ones got omitted?
In season two, Celeste has to deal with the fallout of her abusive husband Perry's death. The biggest hurdles to regaining control of her own life are her suspicious mother-in-law Mary Louise (Meryl Streep) and her own doubts about her role in Perry's death. Celeste repeatedly revisits her happy memories of her husband, and she's weakened by her internal struggle, opening the door for her mother-in-law to challenge her for custody of her sons. Kidman imbues this battle with elegant dignity. Her performance is so wonderfully multi-faceted that even the smallest ways that Celeste gains ground resonate as meaningful victories. Her mesmerizing work in I Want to Know was voted by the SpoilerTV Staff as July's Outstanding Performer of the Month.

The morning she will face Mary-Louise in court for the last time before the judge's decision finds Celeste in a raw place. She numbly showers, while replaying tender moments with Perry in her mind. Kidman projects this emptiness out of her eyes that tells us Celeste is letting herself slide down the rabbit hole again. Her normal rituals of preparing herself for the day ring hollow, because her mind is so clearly elsewhere. She starts watching family videos on an iPad, lingering on the ones with Perry smiling and playing with their sons. We see her soften almost to tears, and Kidman lets the guilt and grief sit in place in her expression. Celeste switches to another video, one we don't see, but we see her quizzical look as this footage seems unfamiliar. We see her recoil from what she watches next as if something ugly and awful just crawled out of the screen at her. The placid daze is gone from her eyes, and she seems to have awoken from a pleasant dream into something much harsher. Kidman does something important with this transition, as she doesn't let Celeste shrink in the face of this discovery. She doesn't look away from it, and that action signals that Celeste is accepting what she's seeing and reconciling herself to it.

Seeing Kidman and Streep face-off was one of the most anticipated scenes of the second season, but the show subverts expectations in this episode by letting Celeste figuratively overpower her foe. She layers her careful cross-examination of Mary-Louise with a kindness that speaks to Celeste's professional side. She is always impeccably composed but also bristling with electricity as she waits for Mary-Louise's responses. We never doubt for a second that we are watching Celeste hunt, and her mother-in-law is the prey. There's no more thrilling scene in the second season than this quiet, tense exchange. Celeste hovers about the witness stand, carefully firing off her questions then punctuating them with strategic empathetic follow-ups to lure Mary-Louise into saying exactly what Celeste needs her to. The tidiness of Kidman's delivery doesn't mean she holds off completely from dramatic flair. Her voice gets quieter, but her tone gets more triumphant. When she asks Mary-Louise if she blamed Perry for his brother's death, there's a whoosh in the nearly whispered delivery of the question. You hear the satisfaction in Kidman's voice as Celeste lands a killing blow. Just when Mary-Louise thinks she has escaped the first trap, she walks neatly into the real trap Celeste laid. Mary-Louise says her son wasn't an abuser and lays the blame on Celeste. With one quick motion, Kidman snatches up a remote off her desk and hits play on a video of Perry brutalizing Celeste. We've already seen Celeste react to the footage. As the courtroom recoils just as she did earlier, Celeste sets the remote down with a hard snap. She walks up to face Mary-Louise, and her near-whisper is angry. She tells Mary-Louise this was her son, and there's compassion in her tone, despite everything.
Madeleine is always an enthralling foil for Celeste, as she is forever moving and talking while Celeste always radiates a tranquility that is too thoughtful to be coldness. This contrast is present throughout Celeste and Madeleine's exchange. Kidman stoically looks straight ahead, while Witherspoon's words are vibrantly shaky and emotional, feeling so heartbroken that she didn't know what Kidman's character was going through. Kidman's whole demeanor subtly shifts, as she tilts her head and body towards Witherspoon and softly engages in the conversation, before shifting back again. This scene is one of many that highlights Kidman's capacity to play a character that at times seems so otherworldly, confused, and fragile, yet has these sheer moments of moral clarity without ever seeming overbearing. In a kind of quiet stillness where her body hardly moves, Kidman's character verbally takes responsibility for what she has let happened to children, willing to ask herself honestly if she's unfit to be a mother.
Celeste sees her approaching and rushes to head her off. She catches the door just as it's opening, pushing back to make it impossible for Mary-Louise to enter. The older woman shrinks away from this new intimidating, furious Celeste. Seconds before we saw Celeste basking in the glow of her courtroom victory, cheerfully and proudly telling her boys she was like Wonder Woman and the Incredible Hulk combined. That same sense of righteous justice is present in Kidman's performance when Celeste stops Mary-Louise from coming in. She is very quiet so that the boys aren't disturbed, but she doesn't restrain her tongue as she did in the courtroom. When Mary-Louise says that Celeste wouldn't be standing if she'd had to bury her children, Celeste stands perfectly straight and looks the other woman dead in the eyes. She says Mary-Louise lost her sons, but she won't get hers too. She pushes the door closed and sets the locks into place. She is unmoved by the other woman's muffled pleas and watches Mary-Louise scurry out of sight.

In her next scene, Celeste is sharing a quiet moment with Madeleine. Kidman is so subtle and restrictive in her performance. It's Madeleine who has the dialogue and the fears that need to be heard out. Celeste herself is facing a trial that could shatter her life, but here she's comforting her best friend. She goes from resting her own head on her friend's shoulder to carefully, gently reprimanding her. Kidman is an extreme tour-de-force in scenes like these when she must hold herself back in terms of volume, but she still delivers her lines with power. This same quality works in the scene when she’s talking to her boys about the trial. At first, she avoids eye contact and focuses on every detail of their ties. She is honest with them but not pushy. She keeps her voice perfectly indifferent when they discuss that the judge might ask them if they want to stay with her or go with Mary-Louise. She tells them to be honest about what they want. When they ask her if she's scared, a second passes before she admits to being a little scared. A quick affectionate smoothing of their hair, a loving squeeze of their hands, and a small smile are the only gestures of reassurance she can offer. These scenes, though they are calm, carry an emotional impact they wouldn't have if Kidman didn't portray Celeste with such poise and expressiveness.

Although Celeste has done what it takes to protect her children, she is still willing to extend forgiveness to Mary-Louise for trying to take them away. The last courtroom scene is a powder keg of emotions just waiting for a match. Kidman deftly inserts the most heartbreaking moment when Celeste reacts to Mary-Louise's speech. Her mother-in-law is offering an apology and saying that she loves Celeste and the boys. Celeste is sitting in her chair, leaning slightly forward with her hands clasped and pressed into her lap. When she hears Mary-Louise's words, she tips her head slightly and her eyes well with hope and the possibility of reconciliation. Mary-Louise then says Celeste is disturbed. She says Celeste was complicit in the abuse, and Kidman switches off that softer part of Celeste. She turns her head away from Mary-Louise and, if not for the slightest angry downturn of her chin, she doesn't seem to be listening. The second Mary-Louise sits down, Celeste stands up. Kidman isn't playing Celeste the attorney here, but her plea as Celeste the mother packs the punch of a closing argument. She denounces Mary-Louise's fitness as a guardian, in light of how she did nothing to help Perry with his childhood trauma and promises the judge she will see that her boys receive the care they need to avoid the same fate. She looks towards her sons in the audience and smiles at them, making the promise to them as much as anyone else in the room. When the judge grants her custody minutes later, Celeste doesn't break her composure except for a gasp of happy relief. Later, when the boys are home, Celeste rewatches a video of Perry. Kidman's expression isn't wistful though. There is a bittersweet smile on Celeste's face. She kisses the screen and deletes the video, and we see that she's found closure.
Kidman played these episodes as if Celeste was still trapped, which of course she was. This final episode requires Kidman to almost completely turn around her character's outlook and mental fortitude. We see Celeste rediscover her strength, find the confidence to not only convince a judge she's worthy but more importantly convincing herself. In every exchange, Kidman is incredible. The courtroom scenes where she single-handedly pulls the strings to create the stakes are just as layered as the quiet moments where Celeste sits alone, and we feel the weight of every heavy thought troubling her. The true resolution and catharsis of the season finale come when Kidman lets the burdens slip away from Celeste, allowing the audience and her character to breathe freely again. This level of skill elevates viewers from watching the episode to experiencing it, and SpoilerTV's Staff recognizes Kidman's art by voting her Outstanding Performer of the Month for July.
This was an interesting month of voting. In the case of the Readers’ winner, this person shot out to the lead from the very start and was never again within striking range of anyone else nominated. The Staff Choice was a lot more interesting with the top spot shifting hands a few times before the ultimate winner settled into the spot and held the spot to the end.
Fear The Walking Dead has continued to reinvent itself in season five, but one of its primary strengths has been there from the very beginning of the show. Viewers continue to be transfixed by Alicia Clark’s evolution. In the seventh episode this season, Alicia is Still Standing but places her life on the line to help a group of survivors. Alycia Debnam-Carey can always be counted on to elevate the suspense and emotional weight of any episode, and few artists so fully inhabit their characters the way she does. This episode also stands out because of the connections she has built with her castmates, which make the life-or-death stakes here feel too close for comfort. Her performance is equal parts hush and fury, and, for it, our readers voted her July’s Outstanding Performer of the Month.
Celeste Wright is called many things by different people in the season finale of Big Little Lies. In I Want To Know, she finally gets to define herself for others and for her own peace of mind. Nicole Kidman has depicted Celeste’s uphill battle to regain control of her own life with empathetic dignity. Her performance is so wonderfully multi-faceted that even the smallest ways that Celeste gains ground resonate as meaningful victories. Her mesmerizing work in this episode was voted by the SpoilerTV Staff as July’s Outstanding Performer of the Month.
Justyna: Throughout the episode we follow Daisy's struggle with her own feelings about Coulson's death and Sarge's strange presence. Despite everyone asking her to take a closer look and consider whether a part of Coulson still lives (as Sarge) she refuses to accept this as a possibility. Daisy has always had a hard time confronting the loss and sudden change in her life, so it's not surprising to see that she never allowed herself to read Coulson's goodbye letter. When she finally does the reality hits her even harder and she's determined to figure out the mystery of Sarge and end him once and for all. She takes a great risk, she asks him to let the rage in, antagonizes him against her, until finally the only choice left is to confront him and kill him using the weapon he prepared for Izel. It's a difficult task, to face someone who looks exactly like the person you love, but it becomes impossible when Daisy finally sees Coulson in Sarge's behavior. As strange as it is there is clearly a part of him that remembers her and the entire team. He even calls her by her old name (Skye), and it's clear how much this means to her. Daisy's reaction is deeply emotional and beautifully acted by Chloe Bennet. The look on her face, when she understands that Sarge was about to sacrifice himself, something that Coulson would have done, says it all. It's not only a confirmation for Daisy, but also for the viewers. A part of Coulson still lives on and is strong enough to keep Pachakutiq contained, at least for now. This felt like a reunion between Daisy and Coulson and as someone who used to love the relationship between these two, I couldn't help but highlight this scene. This part stole the hour for me and it was another great one. Kudos to cast & crew for all their wonderful work. Special shout-out to Clark Gregg and Chloe Bennet who are incredible together.
Jamie: While I would've liked this to have happened a bit sooner and a with a bit more actual talking (and a kiss), this is still a huge thing for a Disney show. It's a shame that this was the series finale. I'm really going to miss this show.
Klutzy girl: As much as I would have liked for Cyrus and TJ to admit they liked each other and kissing, the fact that they even held hands is a big step for Disney. I'm hoping this opens the door for other LGBT characters and couples on the channel.
Justyna: Celeste has certainly not been the most stable character on the show. She's been through so much physical and emotional pain that it feels impossible for her to just carry on with her life. That is why her testimony in last week's episode wasn't the greatest way to reassure the judge that she's perfectly capable of taking care of her children. That's also what makes this moment even more impactful to me. Celeste does incredible job in this questioning, she's a lawyer, she points out the facts, asks the right questions and stays calm throughout the scene. Mary Louise has been verbally taking down all the people around her this season but this time she does not get to do that to Celeste. Instead her daughter-in-law turns the tables on her and starts asking about an event from young Perry's life - a car accident that caused his brother's death. It's Mary Louise's behavior that is put under the microscope, the way she wasn't able to keep her children safe, how she influenced Perry and certainly is one of the reasons he became the man that he was. When Mary Louise calls Celeste a liar she stays strong and asks about Jane before playing a horrifying video which proves that Perry abused his wife and their children witnessed that. The fact that they're the ones who filmed the attack was probably the most painful part. A hit that I didn't see coming. Everyone's reactions to the video said so much, if there were any doubts about Celeste's story that wasn't the case anymore once the video started playing. Even Mary Louise isn't able to say a word anymore. It's traumatic but the scene is a win for Celeste, a story of survival, a mother fighting for her children. It's also a masterclass in acting. Nicole Kidman and Meryl Streep are especially wonderful in this moment, but the rest of the cast also taking part in the scene is a great support. Kudos to the entire crew of the show for all their memorable work.
Laura B: Celeste takes on Mary Louise in court.
Claire: Mary Louise gets her comeuppance from Celeste during the courtroom showdown. Celeste takes Mary Louise down from the high horse that she has been riding all season and it felt satisfying to see ML being called out for her role in this mess. Her son, Perry, didn’t become a wife beater without a little help from mom.
Jamie: Davia and Dennis sing together. Aside from the fact that these two are super talented and that this was a beautiful cover of that song, there was so much emotion in this scene. I can feel the show building to something for these two and I can't wait.
Luana: Malika and her friends perform. This scene was so powerful and intense, I can't really find better words to describe it. This is not the first time it has been said, but this is definitely something in need of constant repetition. It just highlights the importance of art in the redefinition of beauty and the box it has been put in by some. I love how this show continues to litigate these issues, among so many others, and it's what makes Good Trouble truly special.
Luana: Jane the Virgin is coming to an end pretty soon, I just can't believe there's just the double finale left, but I'm glad I was able to leave my prejudice at the door here and enjoy this wonderful ride. I also think this was the perfect time to wrap up Rose's story and her sick love for Luisa. Speaking of which, Luisa's journey has for sure been a rocky one, but I'm so glad she was finally able to redeem herself and be officially invited back into Raff and Jane's life.
Sandi: The show has a habit of leaving the audience in the dark as to what is going on between characters after leaving them in an intriguing scenario, none more so than when Rosalie turned on her kidnapper-cum-rescuer a couple of weeks ago. Rosalie’s break was scary to witness through this extended scene as we finally came to understand her character through the ever-widening eyes of the hogtied Bennie as he endured the descent through her unhinged mind. He was warned that this obsession he had would become a problem, and I’m not entirely sure that danger is over now he has managed to free himself from the physical restraints she put him in. He is the one man Charlie depends on to be the fastest on his feet if any trouble comes his way, but if Rosalie is holding Bennie’s attention instead then will he still be able to defend his boss when called upon.
Justyna: I'm so glad to see Octavia's path towards redemption. It's not going to be easy, it will take time, but she appears to be aware of that since she's started to take small steps towards rebuilding her broken relationships, first in the one that matters to her the most - with her brother. During the hour these two finally have an opportunity to talk and Octavia makes the most of it when she attempts to apologize, fully aware that the words "I'm sorry" are simply not enough. She recognizes that he was right to leave her behind, she knows that she'll have to prove herself and earn her brother's trust, but she believes that the anomaly allowed her to come back for him and she has no intention to give up on their bond. Octavia even admits how lost she felt without him, without her rock she got trapped in the darkness and couldn't see a way out. It's the most emotional moment of the episode. It's both heartwarming to see Octavia reaching out to Bellamy and heartbreaking to see his response. It's clear how painful it is for him to keep his distance but after everything that's happened he knows that actions speak louder than words and from his perspective he hasn't seen any real change in his sister yet. Even though the two didn't embrace or shared "I love you" like they used to, this moment was still a great progress in their relationship. Just talking to each other and Bellamy seeing Octavia as his sister again, that's a ground to build on. I remain hopeful that these two can still be a family despite all the horrors in their past. Marie Avgeropoulos and Bob Morley gave beautiful performances in this scene and kudos to Bob Morley for directing this great episode. I can't wait to see more of Octavia and Bellamy in the next one.
Milo: I've really enjoyed Octavia's arc this season and her character hasn't been given an easy route to redemption. Seeing that scene between both Octavia and Bellamy play out fit perfectly with the themes of the season about the characters trying to learn from their past mistakes and do better. It might not have been the most action packed moment of the episode, but it was one of the more heartfelt and emotional scenes. Give me more of that dynamic between The Blakes and Clarke, too.
Luana: Clarke plays Josephine. Eliza has been killing it and this is all we needed to see before this specific arc ended, to see Clarke play Josephine to perfection but with still enough of her own personality in there and her concern for Madi to show she's still Clarke. I know this particular story is coming to an end but I have found it one of the best arcs of this show in a while and just in time to begin the wrap up of the show to perhaps give us the satisfying conclusion we're all hoping for.

Sandi: The bad side of superheroes has never been done so deliciously evil before, and Tony Starr makes for a superb villain at the head of corporate crime fighting superhero squad, The Seven. The total disregard for life he shows after being the cause of the plane's eventual crashing out of the sky is callously apathetic, but it is Dominique McElligott’s reaction to this incredulous behaviour which really sells the cruelty of the situation further.
Claire: June and the Lawrences’ are in the master bedroom, being forced to perform the sexual ceremony and June looks at them both and says: “how long did you think it was going to take before this world that you helped to create came for you, too?” It was beautiful retribution. And I think that June is finally getting through to Commander Lawrence and will end up with a true ally. Glad to finally see some forward momentum in this season! Elisabeth Moss, Bradley Whitford and Julie Dretzin who is a fabulous addition to this season. I love seeing her story, dealing with mental illness in a place that forbids psychiatric medications, play out. Also how aware she is of everything; telling June that her husband is a war criminal and rightly so. So many of these wives seem to have their heads buried in the sand so Mrs. Lawrence is a refreshing change up.
Laura B: June helps the Lawrences through the whole ordeal they thought they could avoid.
Sandi: June tells Fred "At least it wasn't you." I was going to go with the previous scene of having the Lawrences being forced into the ceremony right up until this line from June. The fact that the last time June was raped was by Fred and Serena in order to induce childbirth is not something that anyone had forgotten I'm sure. Sometimes it's the small victories that count, and with these five simple words she managed to wound his manhood, pride and dignity in no short order. Armed with the secret knowledge that this enforced act from the Waterfords also brings together the last part of the plan of getting the Gilead children freed, it's no wonder June found renewed strength to stand up to him and say these words.

Another year and another SDCC done and dusted! What was your favourite piece of news / announcement to come out of SDCC this year?

Klutzy_Girl: All the Marvel news! I told myself after Endgame that I was still going to watch their upcoming movies but I wasn't as excited. As it turns out, I lied - Saturday's announcement has me impatiently waiting for Phase 4. All the casting news and movies/TV shows sound so interesting, and I hate that we have to wait so long for them. Most excited for The Eternals, Thor, and Shang Chi. The Supernatural panel was also one of my favorites considering it was its last, and it was emotional.

Kollin: The most jaw-dropping news had to be Blade getting his own MCU movie with Mahershali Ali in the titular role. That mic drop just came out of left field and was the perfect way to end the anticipated Hall H, Marvel panel.

Giulia: I'm gonna have to say Natalie Portman as Thor (I don't like saying female Thor) and Tessa Thompson announcing that she will need a queen by her side, making her the first openly queer character in the MCU. I had tears in my eyes! It was such a special moment! I am also really excited for "Eternals". That cast is insane!!

Jamie: My favorite(s) had to be the Marvel lineup news. Scarlet Witch being in Docter Strange 2, Natalie Portman returning as Thor, Tessa Tompson confirming Valkery is LGBT and all the release dates (even if they're still far away).

Cecile: Since most of the news are Marvel related and Marvel content doesn't interest me, I'll admit I tuned out pretty quickly in that regard.

AC: Brandon Routh playing Superman again for the Arrowverse crossover. It was probably inevitable ever since he was cast as Ray Palmer all those years ago for Arrow, but still cool.

Milo: It's impossible not to leave out the sheer importance of the MCU announcing their next slate that will no doubt define the first half of blockbuster cinema of the decade (and this isn't an exaggeration now that Endgame is the king of the box office) but one thing that surprised me the most was the announcement of Top Gun: Maverick, in talks for a while and although I only saw the original after learning of the sequel's existence, it gave me an excuse to watch one of the most enjoyable - if heavily flawed - films of the 1980s, and now, having watched the film and the Top Gun: Maverick trailer LOTS of times, I'm fully on board for this long overdue sequel. And I'm also absolutely here for Brandon Routh reprising the role as Superman for the upcoming Arrowverse crossover.

WK: So VERY excited to hear about the Blade reboot. It was a shame to see the franchise overlooked on so many different occasions considering the impact it had for Marvel as well as its significance within black culture. I’m crossing my fingers for an R-Rated take so the film can maintain the essence of its predecessor.

VG: Sorry, I couldn't care less about SDCC so I will abstain.

A number of trailers debuted at SDCC as hype and anticipation for a number of shows continues to build. Which trailer impressed you the most and what show are you most looking forward to?

Klutzy_Girl: I loved the His Dark Materials trailer, along with Watchmen! Both shows look great, and I absolutely can't wait for Dark Crystal.

Kollin: Gosh, there were so many trailers that impressed, it's hard to pick out one. His Dark Materials, Watchmen, Dark Crystal, The Witcher, Picard...Carnival Row is one under the radar show that looks breathtaking. The Expanse making its Amazon debut looks amazing in the tease. There's never been a year where I have anticipated this many shows over a 6 month period and the trailers for all of them did not disappoint. All the networks are just really ramping it up.

Giulia: "Westworld", for sure!! I am a huge fan of the show and season 3 seems to be very different from the first two seasons. Plus, Aaron Paul and Lena Waithe have joined the cast... count me in!
"His Dark Materials" had a very interesting trailer. I didn't know what it was, I don't know the story, but the cast is absolutely incredible and it all looks thrilling!

Jamie: I'm torn between the Westworld trailer and the Impulse trailer. The first is highly anticipated by many, especially now that things seem to be headed in quite a different direction. And Impulse is such a great but underrated show. The promo got me really excited about the second season.

Cecile: Ahh, so many awesome trailers, it's hard to pick just one! I can't wait for His Dark Materials, which looks great. I'm going to need a more precise release date than "This Fall" but hey, at least it will air this year and not 2020. Otherwise, the last IT: Chapter 2 trailer, Westworld's, and Dark Crystal's all look fantastic and I'm really excited to see the final products.

AC: The news that got me more excited than I ever thought I'd be about a cartoon was the Ducktales trailer and poster for the back half of season 2. Ducktales is a fantastic show with writing that is more clever and funnier than it has any right to be. And now they're bringing in characters from the other 1990s Disney afternoon shows to expand their universe! It's like I've returned to my childhood but better, since I don't have homework or my mom yelling at me to clean my room.

Milo: So many trailers! It's been non-stop. I did like the short teasers that we got for the new seasons of The Man in the High Castle and Preacher but one thing that really stood out to me was the phenomenal His Dark Materials trailer, which captured the spirit of the books in a way that the movie never did.

VG: His Dark Materials. It's almost made up for the New Line executives cancelling the final two films in the trilogy (in spite of The Golden Compass being a huge international hit) a decade ago...almost.

Big Little Lies aired its second season finale on Sunday. What did you make of it? Do you think this season lived up to the heights of season 1 or was the show returning one giant mistake?

Klutzy_Girl: This season as a whole has felt off because of the behind the scenes drama but Laura Dern, Zoe Kravitz, and Meryl Streep knocked it out of the park, especially in the finale. And we don't need a season three at all - would totally be fine with the show ending the way it did - but after that cliffhanger, I'm a little interested in one.

Giulia: I was one of the people who thought that BLL did not need a season 2. I thought that season 1 was so excellently done that it could easily end with a cliffhanger. But then the news of Meryl Streep joining the cast was revealed and I was like "gimme season 2 NOW!". I liked season 2, there's a very different take. The writing isn't as strong as season 1, but the actresses really stepped up their game and gave incredible, breathtaking performances. I am mad that Andrea Arnold allegedly did not have as much creative control as she wanted. I hope HBO will release the material that was cut, because that's basically diminishing a director's hard work and passion. Overall, I thought it was a great season 2. I don't even have to talk about Meryl Streep and how amazing she was, because that just goes without saying.

Jamie: I don't think it was possible to live up to season 1. Mainly, because season 2 was additional to the story. And I wouldn't be surprised if they announced that there will not be a third season, because aside from the cliffhanger, everyone's stories were pretty much wrapped up. But it was a great season. Meryl Streep was a great addition.

Cecile: Considering who's in the cast I didn't think I'd ever feel let down by the show but... the last few episodes weren't great, unfortunately. These seasons are only 7 episodes long and yet some still felt like filler, which is a shame what with the talent involved. Meryl was fantastic though, and the season was entertaining but it could've been so much better. It kind of felt like Fantastic Beasts compared to Harry Potter. The world is there, but the heart & soul aren't.

Milo: I'm behind on Big Little Lies Season 2 but so far so good, even if all the behind the scenes drama seems to be causing chaos this season. It was never needed and could have done with letting Andrea Arnold get free reign on the series completely - but the cast are strong enough to carry it and so far the drama is strong despite its flaws.

Claire: I was glad that BLL received a season 2 order, but after the disjointed mess that I’ve watched for the last 7 weeks I’m not so sure. Don’t get me wrong, the performances (especially Dern, Streep and Kidman) were phenomenal and the visuals were gorgeous, but it was all over the place. I just did not get the point of Bonnie’s mom and her offensive voo doo storyline and how Bonnie’s story was so incomplete and nonsensical at times. I mean why have Bonnie spend half of the season in a hospital room with her comatose mother? This was also a waste of a neat dynamic that had been playing out between the mother and daughter. Maybe if they have another season, they can get rid of a few of the editors and stick with ONE director’s vision! It was a travesty how they mucked up director Andrea Arnold’s beautiful work. I think that this may have been a fatal mistake to season 2 and why it definitely did not live up to season 1. But even at its worst, BLL was still better than most...
High points: Renata Klein’s batting practice on her cheating husband’s man cave toys and Mary Louise and Celeste’s courtroom showdown...
WK: BLL S2 was completely unnecessary. There were barely any gains from the new installment as the plots for the most part were either choppy or poorly conceived. Celeste’s storyline was the saving grace of what culminated into a convoluted mess. When an ensemble cast places its weight on one performer to truly carry the series, there’s a clear problem.

Renata morphed into a caricature as her storyline was not only riddled in cliches, but lacked depth. Madeline’s arc was frivolous compared to the more pressing matters that the other women faced (not to mention, she was just plain annoying and too self involved). Jane was relatively quiet despite experiencing a major emotional blow from last year. Lastly, Bonnie’s characterization was just offensive and lazy. The way they purposefully marginalized her character compared to the others, while poorly depicting the dysfunctional relationship Bonnie had with her mother made it apparent that the producers hadn’t consulted with black inclusive writers.

When you decide to include a black character in an otherwise white series, there’s a responsibility to attend towards such unique experiences as a means of maintaining authenticity. BLL incorporated hastily flashbacks to showcase the trauma Bonnie endured, while only acknowledging her blackness once. Such dynamics deserved to be fully capture to understand its full impact on Bonnie. Also, the mystical elements that were incorporated were racist by reinforcing the tired magical negro trope. Not impressed.
VG: No. The whole season was a dramatic letdown. Then again, season 1 was extremely overrated in the first place. It's already been said by the previous commentators, but the way the characters were written was cartoonish at best (they even had Nicole Kidman's Celeste compare herself to superheroes in the finale) and just obnoxious at worst (too many examples to site). When they hired Andrea Arnold as director of season 2, I had high hopes, but not even Meryl Streep could make the writing bearable. I realize David E Kelly played to his strengths and nothing he writes can be changed since he is so powerful, but he should have stuck with network TV and leave HBO prestige TV alone IMHO. The reports of the behind the scenes power grab against Andrea Arnold are not a surprise and the final televised edit kind of insulted the audience's intelligence. The acting and directing were fine enough, but when the scripts don't work, the work suffers as a whole. The whole point of the season felt unrealistic since Perry's death in the season 1 finale could be considered both self-defense and accidental in the first place, so why these women are so worried about potential jail time for it is a little beyond me aside from giving themselves (and the audience) closure...and AT&T/HBO decent summer ratings.

Ahead of the first season dropping this week, Amazon have already announced that The Boys has been renewed for a second season. With the show getting a slightly mixed reception from critics, do you think Amazon are jumping the gun with this?

Klutzy_Girl: No. I think Amazon knows what they're doing and they obviously liked the show. Looking forward to it!

Kollin: Slightly mixed reception? Most of the reviews are overwhelmingly positive, save for a few reviewers who are known to be trolls like those dudes from Slash and Forbes. I don't think Amazon is jumping the gun, they must know they have a hit on their hands, especially amidst the positive things that many of the credible reviewers are saying. It's also a good way to market The Boys, makes it seem like a big deal now that it got an early renewal.

AC: With DC Universe cancelling Swamp Thing fast and the Netflix Marvel shows gone, it was probably good PR for Amazon to do a quick renewal of a superhero show.

Milo: If Preacher was anything to go by then we're in for some more insanity and weirdness of The Boys and especially given so many shows cancelling midway through their first seasons or leaving audiences on a hook without telling them the fate of their shows (like Cloak and Dagger is still waiting for a season three confirmation), getting a headstart encourages audiences to check it out knowing that they won't be let down if the show doesn't make it past season two. That said, it doesn't make it immune from cancellation - I'm still bitter at HBO for pulling the plug on Vinyl after an early renewal.

VG: No. I feel it could be a big hit, at least for the 1st season. Amazon doesn't need the money and should take more chances like this since they have been on a cancel-spree of late. The comics are entertaining, it has a built-in audience thanks to Preacher, Eric Kripke always does interesting work, and the cast is fantastic. Then again, after what happened when Cinemax renewed Outcast before it premiered a few year ago, anything is possible. And Amazon did just cancel The Tick after a hit 1st season and a diminishing 2nd season....so...

"You lost your boys, you don't get to take mine!"

Here it is, the finale, we knew there were going to be fireworks and we were not disappointed it's one thing to be Annalise Keating (HTGAWM) and simply kick ass in court, but playing these complex characters, at times even meek, and still finding a way to hurt one another in a spectacular way, it's a fine line to walk on, and they delivered exactly what they promised. Still, there are some debates going around this whole show past its first season. It is my understanding that, at first, they were denying the possibility of a new season, but that happened last time as well, and given this finale, I just don't see them leaving this project halfway through, I would be shocked if this wasn't renewed for at least one final season.

And speaking of debates, some of this episode even seemed like an essay on perfection, or it's own nonexistence, it might be some sneaky way to defend making this season (maybe even a third one), and though I find it a little bit cheap, if cheeky, I can't really disagree. The truth is, if you are completely against this show being extended, you could always watch season one as a perfect standalone mini-series, but if you got here, and you liked it, I don't see any reason why you shouldn't be on board with a third one. Now, I do think the third one should be the last, but as things are right now, this story needs to be seen through to the end.

A debate I haven't seen much of, probably just by chance, is the sudden introduction of Afrocentric Mysticism (please correct me if I'm mistaken about this), with Patricia getting better and then dying, which is known to happen, it seems Bonnie has taken on the mantle, she's shown putting crystals close to a photograph of her own daughter and then it's even suggested her mother's visions are passed onto her, and I do have to wonder what their plan is for that in the future. This is when Bonnie decides to stop lying, later she'll go on to confess, but first, she tells Nathan she's not in love with him, and she maybe never was, which was a little too hurtful, in my opinion, but a part of me was definitely thinking of karma for Madeline, am I alone in this?

There's also a scene which seems important to the show's narrative but felt a little out of place where Madeline tells Celeste she feels bad about starting the lie but Celeste says the lie is the friendship, it's what really bonds them together, which doesn't exactly speak well for their idea of friendships in general, but it is something interesting to be debated. I do think they'll probably come back to this in a future season after the truth is finally out.

Ed seems angry still, but he's taking the workout to think, and when Madeline confronts him, he says when they got married they didn't really know what they were getting into, so perhaps they should renew their bows and really commit to them this time. She was thinking divorce papers were coming so she's definitely relieved, she says for better or worse, but he says her worst is off the table, which was kinda hilarious. Now her guilt does seem to be switching the power dynamics in the relationship, which might not be a bad thing, in this case, this is perhaps one of the more realistic couples on this show, but I just can't get over how much I don't care, there's just something about Ed I'll never like, I might be team Nathan on that specific point.

After Ziggy has some words for Jane and makes her remember how Corey made her feel they just get back together, which was a little fast, but everything about their relationship is mostly her getting out there again after such trauma, so I guess it's okay for now. Renata and Mary Louise have a confrontation because, of course, Mary Louise makes a comment about nannies and Renata is ready to kill her right there at the coffee shop, then, when she comes home after the trial, she sees Gordon playing with his train as if he hadn't lost every single thing she owned and she completely loses it, she takes a bat to all his toys and even hits Gordon when he tries to protect them.

Now to the real highlight of the episode, the trial. Celeste is in full swing, reshaping he things that have been stated about her ability as a mother, and using her knowledge from things Perry probably told her to say Mary Louise was an even worse mother, she asks about the car accident where Perry's brother died and whether it happened because she lost her temperament. And to go even further she asks if then she blamed little Perry for it instead of taking responsibility and comforting him. At first, Mary Louise tries to dramatically leave the stand but she's ordered to sit back down and Celeste continues going hard at her, asking about her own abuse towards Perry, she says abusers are usually victims of abuse themselves, which brings Mary Louise to defend her son just in time for Clekeste to play the newfound evidence, a video of Perry getting violent. And it's hard to watch, for everyone, but it does paint a picture of the monster Perry was.

After that, Madeline and Celeste talk in the car, Madeline is taken aback by the video because, even though she knows now of Perry's violence, to see it is a whole different thing, and she feels even more guilty for not seeing it, but Celeste tells her it's all on her, and she's worried because it still doesn't paint her as a good mother, for not trying to take them out of the house sooner, she even starts to doubt her own fitness but Madeline tries to make her see how far she's come, and that this is not the time to falter.

That night, Celeste tells the boys the day went well and they ask if she beat her up and Celeste's face immediately turns, it was a good way to show that even if the boys stay with their mom there's still a long way to go before she can help them unlearn the violence their home held for so long, and at the same time unlearn it herself. Then, Mary Louise shows up, bringing us one of the most intense whispered fights ever, Mary Louise is still trying to deny what she saw Perry do, which is annoying but not out of character, and Celeste says she never lied, and just because Mary Louise lost her boys she doesn't get to take Max and Josh form her. Ouch.

At the sentencing, Mary Louise takes one more stab at Celeste after mulling it over, and I'm not sure a judge would allow for so many interruptions but okay, she finally seems to believe her son was a monster but she still blames Celeste for being complicit. Still, the judge recognizes the boys have had it hard enough without being taken away from their home, but she does imply Celeste will have some things to comply with. Celeste is ecstatic and hugs the kids but then she asks them to hug thei9r grandma, those are some loyal little boys, which is good, it only takes a good person to lead them without taking advantage of that, and Celeste has certainly shown she's up for it.

The episode ends with "Have You Ever Seen the Rain?" where Willie Nelson sings about the calm before the storm, while we get a beautiful montage of Ed and Madeline renewing their vows, Jane being able to go further in her relationship with Corey, Mary Louise leaving for San Francisco, defeated, and Celeste deleting Perry's video. And it does seem like a calm before the storm, their lives seem to be settling back down for a second. But then they all join Bonnie at the police station to support her while their lives are turned upside down once again.

To me, three seasons does seem like the perfect fit for this show. I do want to see Jane be happy for once, but it would also be interesting, if perhaps not pleasant, to see what this would do for Celeste and the boys after having gone through so much, same for Jane, and what it will mean for Bonnie's life and character altogether. Also, I can't wait to see a liberated Renata, honestly that is going to be pure gold. And though many of us were not sure if we wanted a season two, we now know watching these characters go through life is still worth our time.

"Nothing's perfect."

What did you think about this episode? Interested in season three? I look forward to your comments.
Justyna: Another excellent hour of AoS. I absolutely loved finally learning the truth about Sarge but in the end I decided to highlight this sequence instead. It's the most tense scene of the episode and ends with the most tragic of consequences. The team is able to figure out that Izel has been using different people to shoot Sarge and search for something in the HQ. They're unaware of her current location and suspect that any of them could be possessed. I liked their logical approach to the situation, sharing a secret to prove they're still themselves, Mack's realization about Daisy and Yo-Yo and finally the way he was able to identify Fitz as the one under Izel's control. The moment was building up to this reveal and it worked really well, especially as the viewers were only aware of Izel's last attack on Deke. But it's hardly where this scene ends. Izel proves just how dangerous she is when she keeps on switching the bodies depending on the team's response. She almost gets Mack to strangle Deke, she forces Piper to shoot her own hand and finally she causes Davis to fall to his death. Such a heartbreaking part. Davis' character has really grown on me and he was both a competent agent, as well as a great source of comic relief whenever things seemed too dark on the show. His death certainly hits hard, it feels like an end to the happier time for the team. As brief as it was. And the fall itself, the fact that there was nothing anyone could have done, the knowledge that Davis was barely awake from his possession while falling, it all makes this even harder. The entire sequence is wonderfully acted, written and directed. Kudos to the entire cast & crew for all their memorable work. Goodbye Davis, truly one of the good ones.
Prpleight: The mystery of the body snatcher. From the moment that Mack wisely locked down the base the tension of the episode ratcheted up. Mack proved his appointment to director wasn't a mistake. The moment the body jumping is mentioned he locks down the base. Then, when he clears YoYo and Daisy, he locks them away where Izel can't get to them. Then Izel proceeds to play musical bodies in an effort of proving that they really can't do anything to stop her. Unfortunately she solidifies her point in the way she kills Davis. It was one of the more intense games of cat and mouse I've seen in a while.
Laura B: Celeste fights back. It's hard to believe that there is only one episode left, as every episode continued to spiral further and further down. Celeste has been similar to her season one counterpart in that she has found a way to numb herself from the truth of her experience, but it has nearly cost her her children, as Mary Louise takes Celeste to court over custody. Through the first part of the trial Celeste was portrayed poorly, as she couldn't really find a way to turn things around, but then at the last minute Celeste seems to have been able to pick herself up and find that much fiercer voice we saw last season when she helped Madeline out with the play as she now calls into question Mary Louise's own fitness! It was just great to see Nicole Kidman transform like that again!
Claire: Ed walks in on a tipsy Madeline cleaning out her closet in her wedding dress, which hilariously won’t zip up anymore. She’s dancing around and singing a little Patti Smith from their wedding. I’m rooting for these two to save their marriage and it was nice to see this little crack in the armor that Ed has had to put up to avoid being hurt again. The wonderfully underrated Adam Scott and Reese Witherspoon. Runner up: Bonnie reading the letter, admitting her guilt as Perry’s murderer to her comatose mother. I felt a great sense of relief in this truth telling.
Saloni: Bonnie's speech to her mom, who is comatose.
Luana: Celeste takes the stand. This was definitely hard to watch, but it felt so real, like exactly the way in which a lawyer would proceed to discredit a mother, and though some of her choices are pretty questionable, Mary Louise could've helped without making things worse for everyone. Still, as enraging and depressing as this was, Kidman did an amazing job.

GRAND HOTEL, "You've Got Blackmail", July 15, 2019, Actor: Justina Adorno
The Scene: The reveal about Yoli and Sky
Jessica C: Yoli goes through a keepsake box that includes a photograph revealing she and Sky were romantically involved. If this twist was clear to everyone else, I was none the wiser! This came as a complete surprise. I always assumed Sky was involved with someone at the hotel and I knew it was far too easy for that person to be Javi, or even Mateo. But I never imagined it could be Yoli.
Luana: The thought of Mateo being swapped at birth snuck into Jane's head and it wouldn't let go, and I think we've all been there, that moment when this one terrible thought creeps into our conscience and it's impossible to ignore. I love how they managed the whole thing and it only showed how strong they are as a couple and as parents as well. I'm not exactly looking forward to this new Rose comeback but I like the way the show is heading towards the end.
Sandi: Gentry White has been outstanding as Charles Jr, but this scene took the psychopathic nature of his character to such dark depths that it was more than uncomfortable to watch this torture sequence unfold. He plays the cruel and disturbing side of the role with such cavalier nonchalance you never quite know what he will do next, aside from looking after number one of course. Josie never really stood a chance, though Jodie Turner-Smith kept me right on the edge of my seat thinking that she might actually be able to pull off an escape during the cat and mouse chase, until that very last second when Jr appeared as if from nowhere.
Prpleight: The world is upside down. Johnny and Dutch are married, D'av is a solo Killjoy hunting for Jaq, and Pree represents the RAC. With a little outside help Dutch remembers the truth and, after a little sleuthing, gathers the objects she needs to jar Johnny, D'av and Pree back into their right minds. I thought it was gonna work. It had to, didn't it? We were at the end of the hour. All Dutch had to do was stop them from returning to the decontamination unit that was being used to maintain the alternate realities.....and then we discover that The Lady had a back up plan! The rain that the guys just stepped into is a secondary way of reprogramming the people of Westerley. ARGH! They got me! I love it when I make the wrong guess about the direction one of my stories is going to go.
Laura B: I would love to include every single scene from this episode into my scene of the week choice! Everything was impressively shot and I just loved the concept playing with all of the temporal anomalies with the time-eating demons the episode explores. I chose this scene though, because it shows us David's growth as a character. It's true he's been hugging a very gray line between being an underdog hero or becoming the worst villain imaginable. But when he finds Lenny after she went through an emotional temporal experiences that involved seeing her potential daughter Violet grow up before her very eyes, David asks her if she wants him to take her pain away and she says "no". David respects this and walks away. It's important because it ties back into another scene where Syd was talking to younger version of herself and reminding us of why she feels she can't love David anymore, as he wiped some of her memory last season. David just gave someone else a choice, and that could be a step in a redeemable direction.
Her new boss (played by Adrienne Barbeau, yay!) informs her the sample was placed on full lockdown and escorts her to a conference room for an explanation. Instead she's greeted by Sutherland's money man, who initiates a full court press to get Abby to use Alec's trust in her to bring him in for experiments. The strong implication is that taking Alec's side will cost her her career. She chooses Alec and storms out of the office. It was an unexpected moment that moved the story in a different direction.
Justyna: It's no wonder this scene was highlighted by multiple members of our team. It must be one of the most emotional and powerful moments the show has ever done. It's focused on the "heart and the head" of the series - Bellamy and Clarke. I've been really enjoying all of their interactions during the season but this one is unlike anything else we've seen in the past. It's the culmination of their journey so far. I was always under the impression that this show is at its best whenever these two are at its front and center. Whether it's planning a defense against the Grounders' attack, rescuing their people from Mount Weather, ending A.L.I.E. or looking for a way to survive the radiation and the death wave - these two working together were always one of the show's greatest strengths. That's probably why this is quickly becoming my favorite season since the second one. The storyline of Clarke's body being stolen by Josephine could have gone in so many directions, but the one chosen by the writers turned out better than I hoped. Not only we got to see Clarke actively fighting to stay alive while confronting her past, it also gave the show a chance to reunite these two against a common enemy and find a way to rebuild their broken relationship. It truly feels like they're stronger than ever and I can't wait to see them take a stand against Sanctum and the Primes. About the scene itself, a big shout-out to the cast, especially Bob Morley who perfectly portrayed the most vulnerable side of his character yet. Bellamy refuses to let Clarke die and admits just how much he needs her. He recalls their conversation about "the head and the heart" and is determined to keep her heart beating. It's a beautiful act of love and exactly what Clarke needs at the moment. She almost gets destroyed by Josephine but Bellamy's desperate plea for her to "get up and fight" seems to give her enough strength and motivation to win the confrontation. Bellamy's efforts end with Clarke's true return and the amount of relief and joy on everyone's faces means the world. I'm also very glad to see Octavia and the part she plays in the scene. She tries to be there for her brother and gets to witness the emotional reunion. There's so much that can be said about this moment, I haven't even mentioned Gabriel letting Josephine go, but truly, this one has to be seen and felt through the actors' performances. Kudos to the wonderful cast & crew for this memorable scene. Can't wait to see what's next.
Sierra: Bellamy brings Clarke back to life. This was quite possibly one of the most powerful scenes that the show has ever had. It played upon the frequent head and the heart theme between the two characters. Bellamy refused to let Clarke die and wouldn’t stop at anything to keep her heart beating. This was the first time we’ve ever heard Bellamy explicitly state that he needed Clarke. It was an incredible moment for fans of the show.
Luana: This scene was pretty great, even though we knew she wasn't going to die, it was a great moment for the characters and for the actors to show off their chops, Eliza has been killing it with this arc and Bob Morley was especially great on this scene but Marie Avgeropoulos and her reactions to Bellamy's pain were also a big part of driving the point home, she doesn't know what would happen to her brother if he lost Clarke again and I can only hope he's realizing that as well.
Beth: The way Bob Morley played this scene was one of the most heartbreaking moments I have ever seen him do as Bellamy Blake. As Bellamy begged Clarke to live and breathed life back into her, Clarke heard his plea and finally regained her body in the triumphant moment most fans have been longing for since Josephine took over. The scene played on all the emotional beats to perfection and the added element of Octavia looking on as her brother fought to save someone he cares about just brought all the feels.
Jennifer: Bellamy Saves Clarke. "The head and the heart" has been a recurring description of Bellamy and Clarke's dynamic since season four. In this scene, Bellamy begs Clarke to live, physically keeping her heart beating and breathing air into her lungs until she's able to win the battle in her head. Both Bellamy and Clarke have given up and left each other for dead in the past, and Clarke decided to let Josephine keep her body when she thought Bellamy had given up on her. Here, they finally fight for each other and accept that they are vital to one another. Bob Morley and Eliza Taylor display their characters' raw emotions beautifully, while Marie Avgeropoulos gets the opportunity to show off Octavia's reinstated squishier feelings as she witnesses her brother's desperation and then joy.

Laura B: Woah, did Noah Hawley direct this week's episode or what? This week's episode almost felt like an episode of Legion, being filmed in abstract and surreal way, as we watch June break down towards brain atrophy. I loved it, but where it found its emotional ground was when the doctor came in to stitch June's hand after the incident with attacking Serena with a scalpel! The conversation they have was cordial, as the doctor learns that he knew June's mother and that he still treats her kindly despite having different ethical views. It was a trippy episode that blurred the lines on what acceptable is, while potentially setting up some scary loose ends that may come back to bite June later.
Claire: I am disappointed in the direction that has been taken with season 3, but this scene where we see a deeply distraught and possibly suicidal June being treated with care and kindness was a nice respite. Also to have a connection through this doctor to her mother, who is assumed dead, was beautiful.
Madeline is struggling not to tell Ed because he can tell something’s up and she’s not being honest, which doesn’t really help their marriage, she does try to get back in his good graces by going down memory lane and trying to show him how much she loves him, which seems to have worked to soften him up a little. Maybe that's enough for him not to take Tori's offer to get back at their partners by sleeping together.
Bonnie knows her mom is in pain and is struggling with what to do about it but she ends up taking the opportunity to confess to her while she's unconscious, though it seems she can hear her because a tear falls down her face. Bonnie tells Elizabeth why she resents her, for her childhood trauma, for the ways in which she coped, for her own insecurities and where they led her, including settling for Nathan, which is something that will probably get addressed soon and I'm eager to see it.

Things get even worse for Renata when Juliette shows up at bankruptcy court to claim money she's owed for "stress-relief". Of course, Gordon was screwing the nanny, but I did not see the payment part of it coming. And the fact that it’s made so public only makes it worse. Though I have to say it really doesn’t make much sense, why would you want to make your own prostitution a matter of public record? It doesn’t really sound all that plausible.

Jane confronts Corey and he says he's not a cop, but he was called in by Quinland, he says she knows all about Perry, and Jane, and Ziggy, and she’s convinced he didn’t fall, she also believes one of the five will eventually crack under pressure. After that, she stops returning his calls which kinda makes sense, she says it’ll take her some time to let someone in again but he says he’s not walking away.

Celeste still refuses to settle and takes the stand but she gets destroyed and slut-shamed by Mary Louise’s lawyer and, of course, the Ambien stories don’t help at all, since, apparently, Mary Louise was having her followed by a PI, which can't be all that surprising. He starts talking about her own violent outbursts and that is when he brings up Perry’s death and suggests she pushed him, which she denies, but in doing so she does commit perjury when she's asked to describe his death again and she says he slipped.

Jane goes to Mary Louise's to get her to stop the whole thing but instead she gets Mary Louised herself and loses it, that woman has the ability to go straight to people's worst fears. Before the judge decides what to do with the kids Celeste decides to put Mary Louise on the stand to question her and prove she's not the better choice for the kids. To be honest, seeing her right now you wouldn’t really think she was a good lawyer, but I do hope she kicks Mary Louise’s ass, this promises to be a duel to be remembered, not only between two complicated women but between two powerhouse actresses, fireworks are expected for sure.

"This whole planet is inhabited by nutfucks."

Celeste continues her mind-numbing escapades and though by now we know they came back to bite her, it was a pretty obvious progression. Of course, the fact that in the middle of her grief she has to be immersed in a legal battle for her kids doesn't really help, someone with true compassion would find a way to help without making things worse. Which is why Mary Louise's good intentions don't seem all that compassioned, besides, we already know what happens to kids when they're raised by her so perhaps giving her another shot is a lot more dangerous. And I have a feeling this will be where Celeste might have to go to defend her claim to the boys.

Ziggy is getting bullied at school and Max and Josh come to defend him but then the three of them end up sending the bully to the hospital. Jane and Celeste are horrified of course but they do take a chance to get the kids together, and it just shows how everyone can be so many things at once, just because these kids have such sweet moments with their mothers, it doesn't mean they can't be violent, and it sure doesn't guarantee they won't become monsters when they're older. I do love how this show puts that in perspective so often, the overall question is always, how well do you really know people and what they're capable of.

Renata is excluded from the women in power spread, which does make sense, and the full weight of her situations starts dawning on her, one by one, things she took for granted are being taken away, and I do wonder where they're going with this, it feels like something that's a little bit relegated this season, and it needs to come full circle at some point. After all, the characters' evolution and examination are the highlights of this show, and it feels like some opportunities are being wasted with Laura Dern.

Ed and Madeline go to the couple’s workshop and they both hate it but it does bring up an interesting conversation, Ed says he knows he was the practical choice, that after Nathan she just wanted someone stable, but then she went and became unstable, and she says perhaps she was trying to be the destroyer and not the destroyee, for once, but she says she'll never make that mistake again and that she loves him more than she has ever loved anyone. I have to say, I’m sorry but I just don’t see it, there’s nothing about these two together that’s inspiring in any way.

Jane is also struggling with letting Corey in, she tries to go further with him but she realizes she’s not ready yet and you can tell it frustrates her. This scene had pretty much zero dialogue and it was so intense, Shailene Woodley seems to be underrated often and it's a shame because every time she gets one of this scene you can just see and feel everything she's feeling. I do hope Jane gets help at some point because this pain doesn't seem sustainable and she truly does deserve to be happy.

We're also learning more about Bonnie, which is interesting, and it paints a bigger picture of why she reacted the way she did, something that's made even clearer in the next episode. Here we learn she blames her father for not protecting her from her mom’s abuse but he says he did what he thought was best, which was just trying to keep the peace as much as he could. Then, Elizabeth asks Bonnie to kill her and I have to say I didn’t see it coming.

After that, we get a pretty intense montage where Tori is seducing Ed and Bonnie goes over to the Police Station, probably thinking about confessing, only to find out Corey leaving, and she thinks he might be an undercover cop. And though later we learn that's not the case, it's no surprise this shakes her confidence in him. After everything she went through, she finds a decent guy willing to be there for her, and at the first sign of doubt, she thinks it's because it's his job. I'm glad it was just a supposition, though, cause that would've been truly devastating for her.

"People file for bankruptcy all the time. Some even go on to become President."

In this episode we continue on the path of learning just how far Mary Louise is willing to go to turn everyone else's life upside down, I'm not sure it's 100 % intentional, I think we all know a Mary Louise from somewhere and they usually seem to have good intentions in theory, whether that is something worth having in your life... well, that's a different matter all together. Mary Louise goes to a family lawyer to explore taking the kids from Celeste and when the kids' mother brings home a one night stand and doesn’t even remember he’s there when the kids show up doesn’t really help, her whole thing with Ambien seems like something that should be revisited.

The whole pumpkin carving party was awesome, firstly, it’s nice when we get to see glimpses of the new normal, and it was the first time we actually got to see how Renata fits in with the group, it’s funny how different they are and they still manage to be there for each other. But Renata is also hilarious, I mean there were some great things on season one, but the humorous side we’re getting from her this season is just pure gold.

And then Mary Louise walks in, she continues to intrude in their lives in every way, including moving into Jane's building, something people might be used to form a mother but gets a little bit weird when it’s your rapist’s mother. Celeste takes her aside to explain perhaps it’s not the best idea to invade Perry’s victim’s life, but when Mary Louise implies Perry might have cheated with more than one woman. Celeste slaps her, which was a long time coming, but then it was kinda hilarious, if perverse, when she asked if that’s what they called foreplay.

Renata continues to grapple with her new situation and though in this episode that storyline didn't really advance much they did manage to show her rethinking her whole life, and also it allowed for one pretty sweet Trump burn. Bankruptcy court just brings the point in for Renata and she explains why she married Gordon and how she sees now it was a huge mistake, she seemed keen on staying before, but perhaps this changes things.

Ed and Madeline continue to struggle with their marriage and he asks her why she didn’t try to fix the issues in the relationship instead of cheating, but she says the issues were with her, not them. Tensions remain high and, at Ammabella’s disco party, Ed and Nathan almost go to blows. You have to wonder what's truly going on there, I imagine Bonnie is pretty relaxed about that stuff but I would worry that there's another reason Ed gets so under Nathan's skin, and so easily. Madeline is not having a good time either and the fact that everyone seems to be blaming her for having the idea to lie about Perry’s death isn’t really helping.

Also, at the party, Jane dances with Cory and for a moment she seems to be able to breathe and feel comfortable in a man’s arms but then he moves his hand and it all comes rushing back, luckily she tells him about what happened to her and he seems to handle it well. But then it all comes crashing down when Bonnie's mom has a vision of her daughter drowning and has a stroke.
