NOTE: Full spoilers for "24" season six follow.

The defining moment of 24’s sixth season comes not in the fourth episode, with the explosion of a nuclear bomb in Valencia that kills upwards of 12,000 people. It’s the shooting of Milo Pressman (Eric Balfour) in the 21st episode, during the Chinese-ordered assault on C.T.U. to abduct Josh Bauer (Evan Ellingson).

“24”, over the course of its original eight-season run, came under fire at times most notably for its gratuitous violence, the brutal torture that portrayed the heroes in a fairly negative light and suggested that the end justifies the means when it comes to inflicting pain during interrogations. Season seven looked to address this, disbanding C.T.U. and centring one of its sub-plots around an investigation into such methods and the morality involved.

But season six had been entirely the opposite, and it’s the shooting of Milo which lays that bare most starkly. In eight seasons, 15 characters who — at some point in the run, although not necessarily at the time — had been designated part of the main cast were killed (this includes Tony’s season five ‘death’ and Wayne Palmer’s, which was confirmed as part of “Redemption”). Looking down the list, only two deaths do not signify a natural end to that character’s story, or fit into the narrative as a necessary death based on the story being told.

One of those is Milo. The other is Curtis Manning (Roger Cross). Both occur in season six.

Curtis’s death has been the topic of much chagrin from fans over the years, an unnecessary kill in a fairly ridiculous manner. And while there is credibility to that argument, there’s also the element of forcing Jack to kill a colleague — and, to an extent, a friend — because Jack, ever the patriot, understands that his partner’s vendetta is irrelevant compared to the nuclear threat facing his country. The story’s execution is clunky at best, but its ideas are in the right place.

The same cannot be said of Milo’s death, which feels very much like an excuse to murder a main character for no other purpose than shock. In the context of the scene, Zhou (Ian Anthony Dale) and his men have infiltrated C.T.U., and have control over the main floor (*). Milo does not try to be a hero; he simply poses as acting director to prevent anything happening to Nadia (Marisol Nichols). There is no reason to shoot him. It’s the “24” shock factor at its most obvious and its most infuriating.

(*) There are other parts of the building, although we only ever see that briefly in season five when Lynn McGill (Sean Astin) asks for Audrey Raines’ (Kim Raver) phone records.

That shock factor is something the show has always relied on, but is ramped up to 11 in this season. It’s partly a consequence of the much lauded, Emmy-winning fifth season, which demonstrated a relentless intensity and regular twists. But it was always engaging, handled with a sense that each moment had significance in and of itself, and relevant in the context of the season’s overall plot.

Season six instead treats so much of its plot as filler. In the eighth episode, Morris (Carlo Rota) reconfigures a trigger so that Abu Fayed (Adoni Maropis) can arm his nuclear bombs. When C.T.U. arrive, Fayed leaves a bomb at his safe house to buy time, forcing Jack (Kiefer Sutherland) to disarm it. There’s no tension to the scene — there is no alternative to him disarming the bomb; he can’t run from it and it cannot explode and kill the leading man — but the telling thing comes at the start of the following episode. The scene is not even mentioned in the “Previously on 24”. This is the disarming of a nuclear bomb, and it only exists within the episode it happens.

Season five does a similar thing with the nerve gas attack on the Tyler Memorial Hospital, but there’s a crucial difference (aside from the chasm in potential casualties). That attack was outlined from the outset as merely a distractive measure, allowing Vladimir Bierko’s (Julian Sands) henchman to infiltrate C.T.U.

But virtually every major plot moment in season six exists solely for the scene it exists within; “24” takes a breakneck pace approach like never before, opting to make each scene more shocking and dramatic than the last with seemingly very little regard for how everything fits together. Or, indeed, how interesting any of the scenes are. Even the nuke that does go off — the single most devastating attack on the country during the show — is largely ignored after about two episodes.

One of the big problems with this season is that it so often feels dull, in a way “24” had not before. Dialogue is regularly too exposition-heavy, scenes are repetitive and forced (see: Morris’s misery after arming the bomb; it should be one of the better ‘quiet’ plots but just frustrates) and so many of the plot points are recycled from seasons gone by. There’s even meta-commentary by Charles Logan (Gregory Itzin), pointing out to Jack that breaking into the Russian consulate is exactly why he just spent 20 months in a Chinese prison. Said meta-commentary does not excuse the plot (*). And the less said about things possibly intended as callbacks — looking at you, Chloe’s (Mary Lynn Rajskub) “That’s usually how it works” line after telling Morris of her pregnancy — the better.

(*) That plot sees Jack spend the 13th hour sneaking around the consulate, looking for a way to call C.T.U. and tell them the location of the nuclear bombs. That’s his entire story for the hour, yet the episode ends with him being rescued and providing C.T.U. the information that way.

When the plot isn’t dull, it’s ridiculous. That’s no more apparent than at the White House. The attempted assassination of President Wayne Palmer (D.B. Woodside) starts things off, with Tom Lennox (Peter MacNicol) feigning interest purely to stop the action — again, built entirely for the twist — then hidden away as Reed Pollock (Chad Lowe) offers the least convincing lies for his whereabouts. President Palmer has his life risked by being removed from his coma early, a story that feels sickening just watching in the inevitability of his collapse. Noah Daniels (Powers Boothe) being “a dirty old man” all the while blundering his way through the crisis with an arrogance in ways not even Logan showed. MacNicol and Boothe are superb and drag the White House arc from the bottomless pit, but there is no amount of charisma or gravitas they can bring to truly balance out the cringe-worthy dialogue and nonsensical plotting.

The White House discussion feels a good time to bring up the discrimination angle. Season six spends a lot of time racially profiling, largely in the form of Tom’s detention facilities plan. It’s an ongoing debate in the Oval Office, sees Nadia’s access restricted, and generally feels wrong. The season’s first two scenes lay bare how things will play: we open on a Middle Eastern man receiving hostile glances in the street amid news broadcasts about the wave of terrorist attacks that have taken place. The man is then prevented from boarding a bus by a driver clearly motivated by racial profiling, only for a young Asian man to bomb the bus. Cut to: Palmer, Lennox and Karen Hayes (Jayne Atkinson) arguing over the aforementioned detention facilities, offering a blanket suggestion that detaining the American Muslim population will stop the attacks.

It’s difficult not to feel unclean watching those five minutes. Yes, there is certainly a need to convey the fear of the American people amid these devastating attacks and, yes, as the political climate of the last 20 years proves, there is a real-life element at play with racially aggravated fear. But it’s so clumsy here. “24” has often been very good at grappling with morality questions — everything involving the Stephen Saunders (Paul Blackthorne) and the Cordilla Virus in season three is a good example — but when it comes to this delicate political subject, the show is out of its depth.

The same can be said for its handling of the Hauser brothers, with Mark (Devon Gummersall) an associate of Dimitri Gredenko (Rade Šerbedžija) and forcing his autistic brother Brady (Scott Michael Campbell) to help. It’s fairly exploitative and somewhat horrifying as Jack is forced to put Brady in immense danger, having him meet Gredenko with no guarantee of keeping him alive. It’s the season six version of Teri’s amnesia or Kim and the cougar; none of them work.

One thing that’s especially noticeable throughout this season is how the real time element falls apart whenever it suits the episode. In episode 13, exactly 24 seconds of running time pass between the final shot of Martha (Jean Smart) on the phone to Anya Suvarov (Kathleen Gati) — she has not fully explained the situation at this point — and the first shot of Consul Markov (John Noble) on the phone to President Yuri Suvarov (Nick Jameson). Yet we are presumably meant to believe that Anya has explained the scenario and C.T.U.’s impending response to her husband, who then calls Markov and begins a conversation. In the space of 24 seconds. Absolutely not.

Furthermore, in several episodes, an end of act break (or a cutaway) is treated like a pause button; no substantial progress happens in those four in-show minutes that pass. One example: when Zhou’s men attack C.T.U., 11 minutes pass on the clock for them to travel 153 metres. The real time element has never been perfectly followed down to the exact second, but it has been roughly right for 98% of the time. That is not the case this season.

Structurally, season six is bizarre, especially compared to its two predecessors. Season four has 4 acts; season five has 3. But season six has just two, and the existence of Philip Bauer (James Cromwell) prevents them from being separate to one another. The divide comes after 17 episodes with Fayed’s death — making it the longest single-story act in the show’s history, ahead of season two’s 15-episode first act. Cromwell’s Philip is a walking, talking cliché, a charisma vacuum favoured for the main villain role over Graem Bauer (a slimy but entertaining Paul McCrane) — quickly killing the man behind Charles Logan felt more major a mistake than making him Jack’s brother to begin with. Philip is of exactly no direct threat: his entire story revolves around his quest to hide his involvement with the nukes and, later, his helping the Chinese. The familial angle gives it some life but Philip becomes the forgotten man for ten episodes in the middle of the season, and there’s no reason to care when he returns.

The family element does not work at all, especially when it comes to Jack’s sister-in-law and former flame Marilyn (Rena Sofer). There’s an endless, painful romantic tension between them from the moment they first appear on screen together. Sofer has more than 700 credited appearances on “The Bold and the Beautiful”; everything between the Bauer in-laws would be more suited to the CBS soap opera. And — no slight on Ellingson — Josh doesn’t have ten episodes of screentime, he has the same 40 seconds of screentime each time he appears for ten episodes.

Over the past few weeks, I returned to watch season six for the first time in at least seven years. The point was to try and establish whether it was truly as bad as I remembered, and as people often suggest it is. It’s not. It’s worse. It’s a source of constant frustration; when it isn’t frustrating, it’s joyless and uninspired. The lightning pace would be exhausting if it weren’t so unengaging. Rarely is there excitement, rarely is there intrigue, rarely is there a story that feels like it has been planned more than five minutes ahead.

Those who know me will know how much I value “24”; it’s always been part of my TV-watching life. I love the show as a whole. I wanted to love season six. But, damn it, the show makes it very hard to do that.

Fox is developing a potential new incarnation of its Emmy-winning drama series that would have a female lead and take the real-time format of the terrorism-themed original and apply is to a different arena, criminal justice.

The project, which has received a script commitment, hails from 24 franchise executive producers Howard Gordon and Imagine’s Brian Grazer, as well as former The Killing writer-producer Jeremy Doner and the franchise’s production companies, 20th Century Fox TV and Imagine TV. Doner will write the script with Gordon, who ran the original series.

Details about the premise are sketchy, but I hear that the potential new 24 series centers on a female prosecutor who uncovers a legal conspiracy and has to work against the clock to save a death row inmate facing imminent execution whom she had helped prosecute but may be innocent. I hear this is part of an anthological take on 24 that would tackle a new world with new characters each season

Hey all,

We're halfway through the first round, and today we move to the right-hand side of the draw. Those familiar with my television palette will know that today's opening battle makes me very sad because 24 - my all-time favourite show - has one of the toughest opponents in the competition: The 100. FOX's real-time drama would appear to be facing an uphill battle here, its fandom seemingly far less widespread and vocal than The 100's. And it didn't even qualify for last year's competition. Its only glimmer of hope may be that in light of one particular plot point during the CW's post-apocalyptic drama's third season, many fans have begun to root against it, but it is still difficult to see anything but a domination here.

Stranger Things had a pretty disappointing debut appearance last year, crashing out in the second round. It did, admittedly, face Buffy in that defeat but given the series was just over a month old and the talk of the internet, I expected better. Perhaps this year, it will improve. To do so, the series must take down Pretty Little Liars today, which appears as an ended show for the first time having concluded in June. Its last of two appearances came in 2015, where it finished second-last in the final rankings. I suspect it may not fare much better today.

A reminder of the rules:

1) Two shows will go into battle in a poll, where after exactly 24 hours, the leading show will win the battle and will progress into the next round. Each poll will open at 12pm ET on a given day.
2) Vote for your favourite and spread the word with your friends & fans.
3) One vote per person per poll.
4) Comment on what you voted for on in the comments below.
5) Have fun. This is a friendly & competitive competition. Please do not start attacking other fans or fangroups in the comments, because this really isn't what this competition is about.

That finale was weird.

For all intents and purposes, it played out just like a standard 24 finale would: big plot cliffhanger from the penultimate hour is wrapped up within the first two-thirds, before an epilogue of sorts concludes any loose ends - or, at least, that was the idea. So Eric traded Naseri’s daughter for Rebecca, who was shot and killed before John decided not to withdraw from the race and Eric and Nicole patched up their relationship.

But like so much of this season, that is all there was to it. There was very little in the way of fluidity, no real sense that all of these events were happening within the 24 world and instead were just being ticked off a checklist of things that needed to happen. And it did not help that director Stephen Hopkins, who has helmed two prior episodes this season and 12 in the show’s first season, was uncharacteristically bland in his choices throughout.

That was no more apparent than Rebecca’s death, which was both entirely predictable and mundane, and also slightly illogical - Bin-Khalid did initially appear to be in a position quite well hidden with no sight line to Eric. It seemed unlikely that Legacy would conclude its season without a major death to announce itself, but the route ultimately taken did not come off as well as it might have done. It was inconsistent: one minute, Rebecca was almost fully lucid; the next, she was dead. Given that she was hit in the abdomen, it was perhaps a contrivance too far to enable her to have some final words. Her sacrifice to save Eric is noble, certainly, and it may even tie in slightly to that “something” inside both of them - their self-preservation instincts are lessened when it comes to saving someone else - but the way it ended up was just lazy.

Still, the trade itself was different, which was nice, and although there was likely very little option but for it to appear as rigidly edited as it did because of the complexities surrounding Naseri’s terms, it is at least worth commending the show for not taking everything word-for-word from the old playbook. That is not to say certain aspects of the finale were not carbon copies of earlier seasons - Rebecca’s execution, the manner of her death, Simms committing suicide instead of being prosecuted - and, in fact, it is what made the newer approach to the trade more appreciated.

Part of the problem with the season has been, aside from its recycling of plots, the plotholes and conveniences, frequent lack of material actively engaging enough to overlook those plotholes and conveniences, and a desire to make the minor characters feel wanted rather than simply necessary. By the time the finale is through, all of those issues have arisen to lessen all the impact of the hour.

The use of minor characters was a particularly notable one here, with Simms and Tony being treated in very different ways, both to a lack of success. Simms had barely been named before last week, and he was in a total of half the season. So the idea that we should care when he commits suicide is outlandish, with the only saving grace being that John is not being accused of murder as it seemed as though he would - but that is clutching at straws, slightly. His demise is not sad or tragic because the show, in exploring the story of him kidnapping a ten-year-old girl, denied him sympathy; it might have been a more appropriate reaction to cheer than to be sad for him.

Tony’s departure from the show, meanwhile, was unceremonious and bizarre. For a character who is so widely loved and was so heavily hyped, he has become something of an afterthought for long stretches of the back half of this season, virtually excluded from two episodes and exiting before the first act break in the finale. And he absconded, free from any legal repercussions - again, he should technically be a fugitive, even if there was no effort made to explain that - with a broken arm and was not seen again. It is one thing to bring back an old character and just use them for one episode. It is another entirely to bring back an old character for half of the season and waste them completely. Even his fight with Eric was uninspiring with far too many quick cuts that it did a potentially very strong bout a disservice.

Spare a thought too for Thomas Locke, who appeared in the background of the shots with Mullins on the helicopter and said nothing, having missed the previous two episodes completely. Aside from being Andy’s love interest, he has added no value to the run, and that is far from ideal.

Oh, and how about Daniel Pang, who was incapacitated by Mullins last week but disregarded altogether in the finale, even after the time jump. Did he ever wake up? Did Mullins just leave him in his office to come around and cause problems? The idea of wrapping up loose threads was very much an idea rather than something actually well executed. Certainly, leaving some things open-ended for a potential second season is fine, but there was a real selective amnesia taken at times here.

The long scene at the morgue after Rebecca’s death was a similarly frustrating one, with the show trying desperately to have its cake and eat it too, an implausibility that bordered on hilarious. Henry’s intermittently appearing spine (*) is far from clever, and having him only realise the damage he did after seeing his daughter-in-law’s dead body reinforces how poor that whole arc was. “I told myself I was protecting you,” he says, a lie that has been apparent since the moment it was first uttered, and having him only realise it now is a turn of events garnering sympathy from nobody, because his stupidity and short-sightedness was too pathetic.

(*) To harken back to the lack of closure, where is Luis? We saw him run away from Henry’s house in the antepenultimate hour and did not hear from or about him after that. So much for his involvement.

John’s decision to remain in the race is another odd one. It is one that could have been seen coming a number of episodes ago when he suggested pulling out of it, but the motivation behind his choice does somewhat undermine him as a character. Doing it to honour Rebecca’s life? Sure. Doing it to honour Rebecca’s life after being told to do so by your father, who essentially got her killed? Nope. A second season where a John Donovan presidency may be haunted by the sins of both his father and himself sounds intriguing, but that impact is lessened when this is how it comes to fruition.

The only thing that was wrapped up well was the final scene between Eric and Nicole. Given circumstances, it might have been very easy for her to decide she could not be a part of Eric’s life if this is his life, or for him to push her away for fear of her getting hurt again. And while that may have worked, there is a far greater chance that it would not have rung true with anything the series has shown in prior episodes. So for them to reunite and make up and reiterate their commitment to one another is a strong way to end things, and with Eric presumably going to work for CTU in the aftermath of this day, it sets a solid platform for any future seasons.

But do we really need anything more from 24? And, more importantly, did we really need this?

Because amidst all of the reused plotlines and questionable writing, there was very little added to the series by Legacy. Despite several major problems, it was not monstrously bad and did not, as is often feared when something like this comes along, taint the original run, but it also failed to enhance it. It may have intrigued non-24 fans to contemplate sampling the original run. But if that is the extent of its influence, then it is a little difficult to see why this was worth making.

So while more of Eric Carter’s story would not be a bad thing - assuming there was a greater sense of cohesion and more consistently intelligent writing and filmmaking - it is not something worth clamouring to see. Characters could be further fleshed out and utilised, and if a second season is greenlit, fine. But 24: Legacy’s first season proved that more stories in this universe simply are not needed to be shown.

How does this finale rate in the collection of season-enders? Pretty low. It technically did the job of concluding the run, but was far from thorough in doing so and was both unimaginative and, at times, dull - and that could be the tagline for the season as a whole.

And that says it all.

From the CTU Archives (connections to 24’s original run not outlined above):

• The staging of Rebecca’s execution is almost exactly how Secretary Heller was set to be punished for his crimes in season four.

• Simms killing himself was very similar to Charles Logan’s near-suicide in season five. (Only, with Logan, I was actually invested in the character and so it meant something. Not so with Simms.)

• When Henry tried to convince John not to pull out of the race, the music was a slight variation on the theme used in Live Another Day as Heller is about to walk onto the pitch at Wembley, and then in the finale when seeing Audrey’s casket to the plane.

Notes:

• My ears still hurt from the high pitched beep that accompanied the silent clock.

• Ara remembered her father’s phone number after all that time? That seems highly unrealistic, both for her memory capabilities and the idea that Naseri kept the same phone for over a year.

• It did not help the fight between Eric and Tony that the whole opening act was so chaotic.

• Yes, he was badly scarred by the Rangers’ attack, and he did kill Naseri and Rebecca, but Bin-Khalid was truly pathetic. His desperate plea of “Asim, the woman must be punished” having been handcuffed was laughable. I see now where his son got his inadequacies.

• I really disliked the way the technicalities of the time jump were handled. Not only did it look quite ridiculous to have the clock fast forward as it did, we did not even see what time it jumped to.

Part of the moral dilemmas 24 has posed over the years surrounds the lengths to which Jack Bauer and co. would go in order to thwart a particular terrorist attack. What is okay and what is not?

In “10:00pm - 11:00pm”, Legacy revitalised the potential for that debate - albeit with less of a grey area - upon revealing that National Intelligence Director Donald Simms had kidnapped Naseri’s daughter, Ara, and held her hostage for an entire year, leading the terrorist to believe she was dead. It is a grim depiction of how far he and the black ops side of the government went to bring down Ibraham Bin-Khalid, and a decision that would seem to call into question how good the supposed good guys really are.

Back in season two, Jack tricked Syed Ali into thinking that his son had been killed by CTU to gain information on the nuclear bomb; not only was that a façade but Ali was told as much mere hours later. For Simms to actually kidnap a 10-year-old girl for an entire year… that is tough to take and provides strong reasoning for why Naseri is doing all of this. It does not excuse it, certainly, but seeking revenge on the people who took and killed his daughter gives the show much more to work with. And although he was a part of Jadalla’s plan to activate the sleeper cells, his endgame was much more subtle than simply bombing major metropolitan areas.

Eric and John’s disgust at what Simms did is the same reaction the majority of viewers probably had - because, as bad as the things Naseri has done are, there are some lines that should never be crossed, and this was one of them. In some respects, it might have been better had Legacy revealed him to be a mole rather than having this as a dirty secret; in others, turning a character whose appearance in the previously saw him named for the first time (*) into the traitor would be lazy and contrived even by 24’s lowest standards. It was a refreshing change of pace, at least, to not go with the seemingly obvious twist.

(*) I don’t remember learning his name in prior episodes, at least.

And by including the suggestion that the whole thing was Rebecca’s idea, it furthers the ongoing marital problems had by both the Donovans and the Carters. Both Rebecca and Eric are different people working at CTU than they are with their spouses, and although both John and Nicole - absent this week - know that, their discovery of the truths kept from them is horrifying. That he makes the same observation about Rebecca as Nicole did Eric is perhaps a little too on the nose for comfort, but an accurate and, more or less, competent one; they have come into their own since being thrust back into this business, and thrive in the pressure cooker.

Quite where this leaves us heading into the finale, however, is impossible to tell. Earlier in the season, it seemed as though both Eric and Rebecca would end this day by rejoining CTU. Despite that still being a genuine possibility - although the fact that the finale is supposedly without a time jump, given the FOX-issued title, it seems unlikely - with their spouses now questioning the person they know and love, will it be so simple as to just up and work for CTU? Probably not.

Tony, meanwhile, was caught on the other side of affairs, hired by Simms to kill both agents guarding Ara and take the girl to a blacksite in Jalapa. The sheer dismantling of his character in season seven meant that Legacy had a decision to make: either revert him back to the Tony of old or continue down the darkened path and keep some form of continuity. Picking the first option would have been more problematic than the second, which they clearly eventually opted for, but neither are without their faults.

Turning him into a mercenary is a move that would be more interesting if he had not been used so sparingly in recent weeks and the show had several more hours left to accommodate such a sluggish development pace. But even then there are unanswered questions, namely: why is no one trying to put him in prison? 24: Solitary, the Live Another Day story extension found on the Blu-Ray, saw him given digital plans to escape his incarceration. And yet Legacy has blatantly ignored this, refusing to address whether he broke out and is technically a fugitive or if some other miraculous release occurred. In any event, it reflects poorly on the show for essentially deciding that an explanation is unnecessary and instead believing Carlos Bernard’s presence is enough to dissuade doubts.

That is an entirely flawed line of thought. Because although on a personal level this version of Tony is the exact opposite of what made him great in the first place, it is fundamentally poor character writing to give as little context to his existence as Legacy has done, and is enough to be frustrating to any fan regardless of their stance on this Tony.

Still, after five episodes of interacting with Rebecca and not doing a whole lot besides standing around and making Sidra jealous and unhappy, he finally encountered Eric Carter in this episode’s climax. Their standoff will likely be short-lived; with only an hour to go and the larger issue of saving Rebecca still at stake, it will be quickly resolved - and given her captivity, it is probable that the pair will team up to rescue their friend. But two talismans of the eras of 24 going head-to-head was and is, for a few brief moments, an exciting prospect.

Yet Rebecca’s inevitable rescue operation was nearly set to be a worthless effort after she attempted to slit her own wrists to avoid being publically executed for her ‘crimes’. Neither plot is unfamiliar, season four having done essentially the exact same thing, just with a little more finesse. Her failure leaves her in a worse position than death - quite a feat - and it is difficult to not wonder if the end of this 12-episode run sees her killed, the same as season one making a bold statement in killing Teri.

But that is the difficulty 24: Legacy faces. All of its imaginable twists have been done by the show before, in one form or another, and so relying on or even using them at all is a risky business. The real twist, looking ahead to Monday’s finale, would be if there were no twist at all.

From the CTU Archives (connections to 24’s original run not mentioned above):

• Eric puts his gun to Simms’ kneecap, indicating he went to Christopher Henderson’s school of how to question someone by threatening them with a gun.

• Everything at CTU this week was reminiscent of Chloe, and occasionally Edgar, going under the radar to help Jack.

Notes:

• To continue that train of thought, was Legacy intending to make it seem as though Andy might get caught? Because it certainly did not feel like he was ever in any danger. And although Mullins incapacitating Pang is mildly amusing, it is neither particularly interesting (thanks to its overuse) nor logical - Mullins took him down in full view of everybody working.

• Legacy has a real need, it seems, to overexplain everything. Latest example: “Remember you had me do the debrief of Jennifer Marshall, the woman you saved from the bomb vest?” The explanation for Marshall’s identity is, presumably, well-known to all viewers and Eric.

• Nearly ten minutes passed between Rebecca cutting herself and Naseri noticing. I won’t critique the medical side of that knowing very little on the topic, but he is clearly a very bad hostage-taker if his prisoners can slit their wrists. Seriously, on this evidence, Naseri should have been killed by now.

• Apologies for the extreme lateness of this review. FOX sent the finale to critics so I’m hopeful of having an immediate review up Monday night. Failing that, early morning Tuesday should be the latest I get it posted.
It's as easy as that. Either upload your image in the comments below or post a link to where the image is online and DISQUS will show your image for everyone to see. Or just post the picture and tell people to guess the show you are talking about, let's have fun with it.

It's that simple. It's time for you to PICTURE THAT!

“9:00pm - 10:00pm” was not short of tense moments and big twists, revealing even before the first act break that Ibrahim Bin-Khalid was still alive and featuring Henry telling Rebecca of Luis’s involvement with the terrorists. But there was a sense of structural incoherence that plagued the hour, as if it was more focused on the existence of its plot twists than it was conveying them. The end result was an episode representative of throwing anything and everything at the wall and seeing what sticks.

The best example of this is the final moments, in which Rebecca appears to be engulfed in flames, only to come back on the communications and say that Bin-Khalid is alive. It was so chaotic and structureless, and didn’t really make sense from one shot to the next to the next: Rebecca looked to be doomed, then she sounded somewhat safe on the comms, then she discovered Bin-Khalid - and all of it happened off screen. There was no consistency to any of it, and it made the ending of the hour seem far more abrupt than it actually was.

That Bin-Khalid is alive is not a surprise; Jadalla’s incompetence as a villain meant he could not possibly be the big bad, and once Naseri’s backstory was filled in there was little else the show would feasibly do. It harkens back to the first season - and therein lies the problem. After so many years and so many plot twists, the capacity for the series to execute these surprises in that way, or to do them so they do not simply seem recycled, is low. And so it becomes predictable that the man thought dead is not. Yes, there are some differences between Bin-Khalid and Victor Drazen - Drazen was never in the building when it blew, Bin-Khalid was; Andre and Alexis knew their father was alive, Jadalla did not - but the similarities are such that it is difficult to look at this as anything other than a carbon copy.

The goal, too, was the essentially same: enact revenge on the woman who thought she had killed Bin-Khalid by using her husband as a hostage. However, quite where the terrorists go from here is unclear. Presumably, Rebecca is in the clutches of the terrorists, but if their aim was to kill her for what she’s done, how is that prolonged over two more episodes (or even one more)? There is an underlying feeling that this is being extended longer than it perhaps should be, and that is never ideal.

Her decision to embark upon a suicide mission to kill Jadalla and Naseri was both noble and understandable. She and Eric discussed, earlier in the hour, how civilians cannot possibly understand what it is they have to do, and this was representative of that. Her sacrifice is not a great situation - John either dies or his wife dies; he loses either way - but the chance to not only save her husband but kill two major terrorists is too great an opportunity to ignore, and so she uses herself as bait knowing full well the likely outcome. “Carter, if this goes wrong, don’t let them take me alive,” she even has Eric promise. She is aware of her value and the larger ramifications if she is, as she now has been, taken alive, and so her death was the best worst option.

As far as the Bin-Khalid family reunion went, it is intriguing to see the justification for Ibrahim remaining in the dark until now. Naseri’s suggestion that he needed to see which path his son would take (*) makes sense - if he renounced his father’s ways completely, it is not too much of a step to be resentful of his survival - and although Jadalla has been far from a great villain, he has at least tried. And, almost fittingly, within an hour of their reunion, Jadalla was finally killed leaving his father anguished. It was a slightly underplayed kill for Eric, given the bigger picture - namely, Rebecca having to run from fire - but strangely in keeping with the handling of his character.

(*) If Jadalla had not come to the United States with the intention of fulfilling his father’s legacy, would Ibrahim have ever revealed himself to be alive?

The methods used to try and save John, and then try and save Rebecca, could not have contrasted more. Henry, quick to throw Luis under the bus in order to save his son, ended up with a nasty blow to the head upon confronting his brother-in-law. It is tough to gauge whether this was the correct play on the show’s part; yes, Henry could have died and got nowhere, but the alternative would be pretending all was normal, which would look stupid. He did the right thing, even if it got him nowhere. Tony, however, was much more open to helping find Rebecca, willingly shrugging off a job to stay behind and help CTU. Little has been done to establish the relationship between him and Sidra, and so the ease with which he brushes her off is more humorous than it is anything else.

Meanwhile, Nicole and Isaac come to CTU so she can question Eric on the letter she found. His response is entirely unconvincing, and it is no surprise that a little bit of pushback led to him being unable to answer. Even later on when Rebecca asks him if he needs it, he simply glares at her. What Legacy has shown in these ten episodes is that Eric is far more comfortable running around stopping terrorists than he is at home. Granted, we saw all of five minutes of his home life in the premiere, but while his relationship with Nicole has, prior to this, been mostly strong, it is easy to see that he needs to live in this world while she cannot.

Isaac’s offer to Nicole of starting anew with him means another consecutive episode with some sort of potential romantic sparks between the pair, a concept that was tiring pretty quickly and is now just baffling. His speech was like the personified version of a puppy using a whine to try and convince its owner to do something. Less is definitely more in this case, and if Legacy could get the memo that would be great.

“9:00pm - 10:00pm” had some good moments and the potential to be much better than it was, but some continually odd choices and a poorly constructed script led to another problematic episode.

From the CTU Archives (connections to 24’s original run not mentioned above):

• Rebecca tells Eric that she hasn’t run her plan past Mullins because: “I can’t take the chance he’ll say no.” A Jack Bauer favourite.

Notes:

• Timeline issue: 24: Solitary was said to take place two and a half years after Live Another Day; Legacy is said to take place three years after Live Another Day. And yet Tony tells Mullins that he and Rebecca worked an operation in Yemen a year ago.

• Admittedly, John did not have much time to escape, but could he have cut off the zip ties on his hands too? Also, I didn’t realise “free and safe” meant throwing him out of a moving vehicle into traffic.

• Eric was back to CTU very quickly, having still been in Jennifer Marshall’s basement at the end of the last episode. And yet the bomb disposal team were 20 minutes away last week?

• I may not be a doctor, but putting Andy’s bandage on the outside of his trousers seems pointless.

• Andy also learnt that “East July”, the thing that Marshall overheard Naseri’s men saying, is connected somehow to the Director of National Intelligence. He has appeared in four episodes so far, but in what can only be described as cameo appearances. If he turns out to be involved somehow, then that is some bad plotting.

• Apologies for the belatedness of this review - Tuesday was a busy day. It is also likely that next week’s piece will be later than usual.
