<br /><i>Our Son</i> is a heartbreaking divorce drama through the lense of a queer couple who realise that their marriage is falling apart. It’s tense, emotional and powerfully acted, a real stage-actor’s dream, with Billy Porter and Luke Evans playing central characters – the husband/husband team who find themselves torn apart when differences reach their point, and Porter’s well-liked Gabriel realises he’s fallen for someone else. Evans’ Nicky, in desperation puts their remaining relationship in jeopardy by lashing out in protection for their 8 year old son, Owen – as both learn what it means to be a father.
<br />
<br />
It's a complicated drama; we’ve had tons of these films over the years with Baumbach’s <i>Marriage Story</i> being a comparison point. <i>Our Son</i> doesn’t do anything new for a divorce drama other than make its two leads a queer couple but at the same time, Bill Oliver’s dynamic is such a welcome change it makes it easy to overlook any sense of familiarity. The film explores the elder generation of queers who came out when they were younger and a lot of the arc that Nicky is undergoing explores him wishing he had more freedom when he was younger; and lived in a more tolerating society. There’s a lot of heartbreaking emotional cues that make <i>Our Son</i> stand out; and the film scores bonus points by simply just letting gay men be parents – it’s sadly a rarity and that alone makes <i>Our Son</i> worth seeking out – those expecting the normal clubbing excess won’t find it here.
<br />
<br />
Porter’s delivery of their own arc is incredible and the performances by both them and Evans are really actor’s performances of the best possible kind, uniquely human and emotionally charged. For all the familiarty in the storyline of parents fighting for their children’s divorce <i>Our Son</i> manages to use what you know to tell it in a new way – breathing new life into the genre. It’s heartbreaking. You will cry – especially if you relate to anything at play here. The way the film defines Nicky and Gabriel from the off sets you up for emotional heartbreak: they’ve been together thirteen years, Gabriel has sacrificed eight years of his acting career to raise a son, Nicky has pooled all his money into the house for them that he’s likely now going to have to sell to fund a divorce. Their friends are shared between them and it will create a wedge; and what’s worse is that their son Owen (Christopher Woodley) is going to have to choose between them: Gabriel having the instant edge as the stay at home, likeable parent. Nicky has a long way to go.
<br />
<br />
Heated emotions flare over the custody of Owen which fuels the narrative of <i>Our Son</i> and the almost family-friendly drama feels like it tackles plenty of important things to say that a lot of people tend to overlook in the wider media when it comes to representation of queer people on screen. What kind of gay men do Nicky and Gabriel want to be now that they’re divorced? <i>Our Son</i> almost gives them the second chance to come out again – defying gendered expectations in a way that makes this film commendable for its understanding of the community. Their chemistry may be on thin ice but then that is baked into the plot – these characters don’t have instant chemistry anymore, they aren’t on the same wavelength – they aren’t in love with each other. No matter how they try.
<br />
<br />
But the spark has not gone from <i>Our Son</i>. The screenplay may be blunt in getting its point across – but its triumph comes from Luke Evans and Billy Porter being talented enough to sell even the least subtle of lines.<br />
<br />

Commissioned by Stephanie, the daughter of convicted murderer Clay Porter, Colter is tasked with an almost impossible mission: to find a key witness that could overturn Clay’s guilty verdict. This episode skillfully intertwined elements of suspense, ethical dilemmas and the raw determination that Colter has to fight for what he believes is right.<div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgyDBHufDUqveyiKuaSCbnceYjkx5S3238dLr8K0MKX7PFDHnwcxo8VFTxfDlnC4B3sa8wmL1lKrwJW_HPVLBJUGk1N_tVT4SW01NP8OHKEegdsj22lk5aD2hpVDA8of6JphsjvF6MSd2wjH6UDihW9vKQ4c3CKuaK-ylsxgQz821dQdmr6Etfp/s3000/2630809_0864b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2000" data-original-width="3000" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgyDBHufDUqveyiKuaSCbnceYjkx5S3238dLr8K0MKX7PFDHnwcxo8VFTxfDlnC4B3sa8wmL1lKrwJW_HPVLBJUGk1N_tVT4SW01NP8OHKEegdsj22lk5aD2hpVDA8of6JphsjvF6MSd2wjH6UDihW9vKQ4c3CKuaK-ylsxgQz821dQdmr6Etfp/w400-h266/2630809_0864b.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span id="docs-internal-guid-f23d040f-7fff-1a05-f64b-1936ca6fc8e6"><span style="background-color: white; font-size: 11pt; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space-collapse: preserve;"><span style="font-family: times;">"St. Louis” – TRACKER, Pictured: Fiona Rene as Reenie Greene and Justin Hartley as Colter Shaw. The duo’s seemingly mundane Asbestos removal business was also serving as an illicit gambling operation from which Avery was profiting. This discovery led to a fierce confrontation between Clay and Avery. When Avery was found dead shortly after the altercation, Clay was swiftly arrested and convicted of the murder, despite his adamant pleas that he was not guilty of the crime. This episode once again threw Reenie into the mix, serving as somewhat of an assistant to Colter as he worked to prove Clay’s innocence. Despite Reenie’s skepticism, Colter’s unwavering commitment to Stephanie that he would find the witness that could ultimately free her father from prison, took him through a high stakes race against time to save an innocent man's life. </div><div><br /></div><div>Colter encountered several challenges on his journey, including getting arrested for the second time this season, but ultimately his determination led him to the elusive witness capable of clearing Clay’s name. The narrative took a serious turn when Colter realized that his quest wasn’t just about saving Clay’s life, but now the witnesses as well since speaking up could cost her her life. Luckily, Colter has a way of making people feel at ease in his presence and knowing that he would protect her, helped the witness agree to come forward. </div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwRaRkvH8yCAZXKdDTD0GcLySEc2WNC4piDRe8oFvpxgdWLZeKeQXRtn_-cUcjqW6eXsx44HtV6ONGVPocpiMmzxjl2ldBXtiUPOYRoAZjLrBAsAXv_iJgScGhRhRTxuWKli0NcSgneRT_OEnL8J7gG_dk_uW8L-_ybstEhE3iN0LPwFfHhSFr/s3000/2630809_1107b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2000" data-original-width="3000" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwRaRkvH8yCAZXKdDTD0GcLySEc2WNC4piDRe8oFvpxgdWLZeKeQXRtn_-cUcjqW6eXsx44HtV6ONGVPocpiMmzxjl2ldBXtiUPOYRoAZjLrBAsAXv_iJgScGhRhRTxuWKli0NcSgneRT_OEnL8J7gG_dk_uW8L-_ybstEhE3iN0LPwFfHhSFr/w400-h266/2630809_1107b.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span id="docs-internal-guid-5c3a4d79-7fff-d8ae-2b91-41c108b82a86"><span style="background-color: white; font-size: 11pt; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space-collapse: preserve;"><span style="font-family: times;">"St. Louis” – TRACKER, Pictured: Steve Eddy James, Ali Tarhouni and Justin Hartley as Colter Shaw. Photo: Michael Courtney/CBS ©2024 CBS Broadcasting, Inc. All Rights Reserved</span></span></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div>A poignant moment of the episode was when it seemed all was lost after Clay was attacked in prison. This scene served as a stark reminder of the episode’s underlying urgency and the real human cost of getting justice. It is during this moment that we see Colter’s resolve solidify, refusing to let danger deter him from his mission. </div><div><br /></div><div>The case took a surprising turn when it was discovered that Clay’s lawyer had intentionally ruined Clay’s defense to aid the real murderer, who was also his client. This twist intensified the action, especially when the lawyer kidnapped Reenie and tried to make a deal with Colter, offering to exchange Reenie for the key witness. Viewers were taken through a tense moment as Colter relied on his cleverness and instincts, putting both Reenie and the witness’s lives on the line in order to outsmart the lawyer and rescue everyone, ultimately ensuring Clay’s freedom. </div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjczG2l6_3UFHYme5F8qPQ3RbDmKq6P4qgdIxPdgYtI1lB7Szb7LC3aV5DBmaX6pypX2lQ1w6pHLRo1HSiZ9R4UKFGj5T3HmtuQ0ZzCL_pOc_3l1VsRiaStYny-5laKp16UHNi6Ha-wUEVSl373PPOXXGMltn1oj-0YWSXJj0aGsIR6GtTL7Tyg/s3000/2630809_0018b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3000" data-original-width="2000" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjczG2l6_3UFHYme5F8qPQ3RbDmKq6P4qgdIxPdgYtI1lB7Szb7LC3aV5DBmaX6pypX2lQ1w6pHLRo1HSiZ9R4UKFGj5T3HmtuQ0ZzCL_pOc_3l1VsRiaStYny-5laKp16UHNi6Ha-wUEVSl373PPOXXGMltn1oj-0YWSXJj0aGsIR6GtTL7Tyg/w266-h400/2630809_0018b.jpg" width="266" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span id="docs-internal-guid-ca8cdb4a-7fff-87cd-ba00-c32e29e97eeb"><span style="background-color: white; font-size: 11pt; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space-collapse: preserve;"><span style="font-family: times;">"St. Louis” – TRACKER, Pictured: Fiona Rene as Reenie Greene. The slow pace of character development and backstory revelation for key characters such as Teddi, Velma and especially Colter himself, left viewers yearning for more. Five episodes in, and the audience is still left in the dark about Colter’s elusive brother and the reason he was trying desperately to contact Colter in the first episode of the season. This lack of storytelling diminishes the potential for viewers to form a deeper emotional investment in the character’s journeys. Especially when they are left hanging for episodes at a time without answers to key plot points. </div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3beqVJm6NxoJafRQkiHsQ7zRd1G40cKqY98_29xpkHlUtbTazMGQGuDKwoLLCl97ZMUhal_qN9oUsJddcJoCIPMVOYuFNKxf_VNtuEUEStqsXVdnL5N-nFI2kjtt8EFqdq6LQpnQjvDLAybe6wBq8t0MTDhrxOk9ABi1IuaDMQrHi6etqS3cX/s800/2630809_0753b-498f81be63640bed.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="533" data-original-width="800" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3beqVJm6NxoJafRQkiHsQ7zRd1G40cKqY98_29xpkHlUtbTazMGQGuDKwoLLCl97ZMUhal_qN9oUsJddcJoCIPMVOYuFNKxf_VNtuEUEStqsXVdnL5N-nFI2kjtt8EFqdq6LQpnQjvDLAybe6wBq8t0MTDhrxOk9ABi1IuaDMQrHi6etqS3cX/w400-h266/2630809_0753b-498f81be63640bed.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><span style="font-family: times;"><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="background-color: white; font-size: 11pt; white-space-collapse: preserve;">"St. Louis” – TRACKER, Pictured: Fiona Rene as Reenie Greene and Justin Hartley as Colter Shaw. Colter’s relationship with Reenie brings something special to the series, highlighting that doing this work is tough and even a lone wolf like Colter needs someone by his side that he can count on and trust. <p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 107%;">If you obsessed over the Danai Gurira and Andy Lincoln
interviews leading up to the premier of The Ones Who Live, you know this is an
epic tale about Rick and Michonne's love. Danai penned this episode, so there
were great hopes for raw emotion and healing after Michonne pulled Rick from a
moving helicopter during a thunderstorm at the end of the previous episode.
Danai did not disappoint. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 107%;">At the beginning of the hour, Rick and Michonne
miraculously escape the helicopter and make their way to Greenwood, a fallen
community. They enter a building with an Alexa-like voice saying, "Welcome
home." The rooms are spotless, thanks to a still-functioning rumba. The
future-focused building featured computers, voice-activated thermostats, and
large picture windows. Outside, a purifying rain fell. The music playing is
Tony Orlando and Dawn's "Tie a Yellow Ribbon" (1973), whose significance
dates back to the Civil War when families attached yellow ribbons to trees in
honor of soldiers. Suicide prevention is also associated with yellow ribbons.
Both references inform The Ones Who Live since Rick is now a CRM soldier and
has considered killing himself. Rick and Michonne also discover in this episode
that a community founder, Patel, committed suicide. These atmospheric elements
propel the story forward.</span></p><p class="MsoNormal"></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVcH0agX9KI6EuBLtFYmNG7UrYhyphenhyphenSJOvZlpqB7FlGJNNWwSK-PDzGh87vzNh_GcExwqTlYxrAqeOMirqHJbaKuwMd9gOEDlBP1U9VcKEY2VVJliGvYSCMh7ga8PdEQX9JsuqI67MbSAuVu0FMXFL0SieFdnw82ZMDSQXfomnqAmCqlTvMnl3-G/s4500/TOWL_104_SG_0047-RT.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3000" data-original-width="4500" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVcH0agX9KI6EuBLtFYmNG7UrYhyphenhyphenSJOvZlpqB7FlGJNNWwSK-PDzGh87vzNh_GcExwqTlYxrAqeOMirqHJbaKuwMd9gOEDlBP1U9VcKEY2VVJliGvYSCMh7ga8PdEQX9JsuqI67MbSAuVu0FMXFL0SieFdnw82ZMDSQXfomnqAmCqlTvMnl3-G/w400-h266/TOWL_104_SG_0047-RT.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><span id="docs-internal-guid-d24bb780-7fff-3f8a-5c78-df453be4a947"><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="background-color: white; font-size: 11pt; white-space-collapse: preserve;"><span style="font-family: times;">"What We” – THE WALKING DEAD: THE ONES WHO LIVE, Pictured: Andrew Lincoln as Rick Grimes. All Rights Reserved</span></span></div></span><p></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;">Rick and Michonne begin to bicker in a brutal back and
forth. Michonne wants to go home to Alexandria, and Rick insists they return to
the CRM. The AI voice announces that they've reached the preferred temperature,
which indicates that they've reached a critical point. Michonne immediately
changes into dry clothing while Rick watches. He sees she has an X burned into
her flesh, but he doesn't ask why it happened. Michonne tries to sway Rick by
revealing that he has a son called Rick Jr., RJ, or the Little Brave Man.
Michonne expects Rick's love for his family to inspire him to join her on the
journey home. It does not. Rick expected that Michonne's love for him would
lead her to return home alone so he could remain at the CRM and change it from
the inside, as Okafor had envisioned. It did not. Both are deeply disappointed
because their expectations of each other remain unfulfilled. These unmet
expectations drive the two to battle with their hurt, anger, fear, conflict,
and, finally, reconciliation.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 107%;">After learning about RJ, Rick still asks for the radio
to signal the CRM. Michonne is deeply hurt by this and how Rick has tried to
reject her. She cries that she doesn't know him anymore. Rick keeps insisting
that he is protecting their family. Again, he asks, "Are you going to give me it (the radio)?" Rick convinces Michonne to give him the radio by
acknowledging many things. He admits that he never stopped loving her. He
acknowledges that he wants her to live. He concedes that Jadis feels threatened
by them because together, "they can do anything." He concedes that
Michonne saved their lives because the helicopter crashed into another tower of
the building. The Walking Dead (TWD) OGs may see a parallel between this scene
and S7:E4, "Service," when Rick asks Michonne for her gun to protect
her and the community from Negan. Michonne responds, "So what, we just let
them win?" Rick weakens and says, "Look at me. They won a long time
ago." While he remains resolute, this conversation inches him off his
position of protecting her and their family toward how he may be the last man
standing to save the whole damned world. <o:p></o:p></span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5b3cWU06eoDgTYrHqMG_YeLQXlq7NfaGiJX1_3BvwfRH7xjCEHhvcwfKglmfAKoJBQxUeq5OILp2vVqzPCDkjsHwwT9K6DllNLDcamEVa14HAbmj-z60f0lbk-Afri-xvW1_KtJ2qwlu7_c6z96YO_fJtTOuttlYqUInNqErxIywQ-wIimwBC/s4500/TOWL_104_SG_0036-RT.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3000" data-original-width="4500" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5b3cWU06eoDgTYrHqMG_YeLQXlq7NfaGiJX1_3BvwfRH7xjCEHhvcwfKglmfAKoJBQxUeq5OILp2vVqzPCDkjsHwwT9K6DllNLDcamEVa14HAbmj-z60f0lbk-Afri-xvW1_KtJ2qwlu7_c6z96YO_fJtTOuttlYqUInNqErxIywQ-wIimwBC/w400-h266/TOWL_104_SG_0036-RT.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span id="docs-internal-guid-3e2b31c2-7fff-b203-2174-9b2c3107caa9"><span style="background-color: white; font-size: 11pt; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space-collapse: preserve;"><span style="font-family: times;">"What We” – THE WALKING DEAD: THE ONES WHO LIVE, Pictured: Danai Gurira as Michonne. <p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 107%;">However, Michonne does not believe the CRM are Rick's
people or his fight. She only sees the perfect opportunity to go home. Rick, a
prisoner of the 'what ifs,' fears what if, upon returning to the CRM, he can't
protect his family. Michonne sees that Rick is in a Schroedinger's Cat
situation, where he is found, yet not found, and where he's alive, yet dead.
Michonne couldn't push him past his fear, which made her angry. Angry, she
relies on Nat's guidance: "You have to know when to go." So, she
goes. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 107%;">The CRM Ethos prioritizes security and secrecy, so
they reduced the building to rubble to hide the helicopter crash. Rick, who
predictably chased Michonne, helped her fight off walkers. They take a break
from fighting long enough to argue about saving the world versus reuniting the
family. Michonne confronts Rick about "signing up for lifelong duty with
the enemy." Rick counters: "This is about ending the enemy."
Michonne offers one of the most romantic lines:" The only time I feel safe
is when I'm with you." Rick falls silent. But they are still not on the
same page, as evidenced by their unsynchronized fighting. As a result, Michonne
finds herself trapped under a chandelier. She tells Rick to go, but predictably, Rick says, "That's never going to happen." He is inching
ever closer to the recognition that together, they can do anything. <o:p></o:p></span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgevwTBWpWZNA3GFCjaCqJLkMUobPR-Wm83d6hMB7ePj4hCj1QCIXVphvTWmgYul7dUw_P-aEvoO3z1BjjJP7ndWXPFnbcLLqMfC9Ilq9wWeoeTnafL731vVPcDs0tNY42m2ZXyGqDaZAnvALLmWBWMyVr3GRfNfhOm2sAy_qUBAUwDrnRwRoVE/s4500/TOWL_104_SG_0016-RT.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3000" data-original-width="4500" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgevwTBWpWZNA3GFCjaCqJLkMUobPR-Wm83d6hMB7ePj4hCj1QCIXVphvTWmgYul7dUw_P-aEvoO3z1BjjJP7ndWXPFnbcLLqMfC9Ilq9wWeoeTnafL731vVPcDs0tNY42m2ZXyGqDaZAnvALLmWBWMyVr3GRfNfhOm2sAy_qUBAUwDrnRwRoVE/w400-h266/TOWL_104_SG_0016-RT.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><span id="docs-internal-guid-13aa3969-7fff-6fb7-4f94-304627a12482"><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="background-color: white; font-size: 11pt; white-space-collapse: preserve;"><span style="font-family: times;">"What We” – THE WALKING DEAD: THE ONES WHO LIVE, Pictured: Andrew Lincoln as Rick Grimes. All Rights Reserved</span></span></div></span><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;">Rick and Michonne eventually escape to the side of the
building and to the side of their relationship that hasn't yet buckled. They
enter another unit, and the AI voice again says, "Welcome Home." Rick
immediately reaches out to touch and kiss Michonne. Near-death experiences
heighten our lover's passions. During that poignant moment, Rick suffers a
panic attack. In storytelling, the heart is the most potent symbol of love.
Michonne places Rick's palm over her heart to push him past his fear and
reestablish their commitment and connection as the buildings fall around them.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 107%;">Despite the urgent need to move, Michonne demands they
stop for reconciliation. Reconciliation in conflict is about healing the
relationship. Throughout the episode, Michonne accuses Rick of lying because
she is also lying. She discloses that she doesn't know if the kids are okay.
She talked about how the CRM nearly killed her and cost her a year with her
kids. Rick confesses that the CRM took Carl and Michonne away from his dreams. Rick
offers his most romantic lament: "I can't live without you. Without you, I
will die. You can't simply make me feel alive again until I know I won't lose
you." TWD OGs may again notice that this scene echoes those in S2:E12,
"Better Angels," and S7:E12, "Say Yes," when Rick initiated
conversations with Carl and Michonne, respectively, about surviving the death
of loved ones. A traumatized Rick is no longer ready or able to lose his family
again. So, Michonne brings Carl back to Rick with the artist's rendering. In
the last episode, the artist said he could never get the face right because
Rick could no longer see Carl's face. Michonne could. Michonne did! This was
the much-anticipated, Bridgerton-esque moment when they talked openly from the
heart to restore the trust that had always existed in their relationship.
Michonne further reassures Rick, saying, "We love on each other as hard as
we can, while we can." Her words and actions brought Rick back to her. <o:p></o:p></span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPHOBF3s6WOKCAYEPZK2_meXcV3g5ydeg_cJGLt3nwkexB0pJiK8kZb-cLmZoU6FpJ56QrkfuoENp3IcKb1NwMePpzGKJZWCu3na79T6eGnhvlGBubOEfiw0abLUnGHZonWlem-pB_zw5rQGumgigwX5aveRQ3D8sDW3yCRiAL3Dl8Rnz7M18d/s4500/TOWL_104_SG_0020-RT.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3000" data-original-width="4500" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPHOBF3s6WOKCAYEPZK2_meXcV3g5ydeg_cJGLt3nwkexB0pJiK8kZb-cLmZoU6FpJ56QrkfuoENp3IcKb1NwMePpzGKJZWCu3na79T6eGnhvlGBubOEfiw0abLUnGHZonWlem-pB_zw5rQGumgigwX5aveRQ3D8sDW3yCRiAL3Dl8Rnz7M18d/w400-h266/TOWL_104_SG_0020-RT.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span id="docs-internal-guid-d3859c0c-7fff-463a-a118-376d3b5a6090"><span style="background-color: white; font-size: 11pt; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space-collapse: preserve;"><span style="font-family: times;">"What We” – THE WALKING DEAD: THE ONES WHO LIVE, Pictured: Danai Gurira as Michonne. <p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 107%;">"What We" strikes a remarkable balance
between walker killings and romance. The Richonne faithful will find this
episode nourishing and satisfying, much like a great meal. At the end of the hour,
our heroes are battling the dead, in sync this time, on their way to a car
loaded with ethanol. Hopefully, the car is sound and has enough fuel to get
them home. Michonne and Rick are proving once again that they "can make
the whole damned world theirs if they want to." The episode gives us hope,

<br /><i>Masters of the Air</i> is the third wartime drama in the Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks helmed universe <i>Band of Brothers</i> and <i>The Pacific</i>, switching focus to aerial combat during World War Two for a nine episode, big budget spectacular starring A-List actors with the likes of Barry Keoghan, Austin Butler and Ncuti Gatwa. It’s certainly big, bold, lavish and very ambitious – but does it stick the landing? It certainly does – because although the messiness of the war is somewhat reflected in the script’s narrative – especially given the circumstances of following a group of bomber pilots on their various missions which literally ends more towards repetition in the narrative than not – you see them prepping for their mission, they go up, they fight, some die, they go back home again – but once the show opens up a bit in its third act you see what <i>Masters of the Air</i> should’ve been all along, a towering prison escape drama; justice for the Tuskegee Airman, and one of the most frantic portrayals of the entire war in nine episodes.
<br />
<br />
The sheer amount of detail leaves history nerds right at home: arriving quieter and more without fuss than a sequel to Band of Brothers ever could on linear television or even the HBO of old, but there is no HBO of old – AppleTV+ is the new HBO, and few other networks would be able to afford the lofty price put into making <i>Masters of the Air</i>. The American men of the 100th bomb group are our focus – with an incredible cast list of central characters. Butler and Callum Turner play the series’ beating heart, Maj. Gale “Buck” Cleven and John “Bucky" Egan, but with over 300 speaking roles <i>Masters of the Air</i> is so stuffed with its cast that the Tuskegee Airmen don’t even make it until the backend of the series; leaving you wondering why Gatwa was a big part of the marketing push.
<br />
<br />
But his role is – like everybody else’s in <i>Masters of the Air</i>, a vital one – the camadire between Buck and Bucky is full of chaotic energy and life; and Butler’s performance in <i>Masters of the Air</i>, especially when he disappears off screen only to wind up a captive POV in the same camp that played host to *that* Great Escape; is a movie-star reveal better than anything, that smile – “John Egan, your two o’clock,” is one of the most satisfying moments of the year - this year's "one way out" - and succeeds in bringing closer to an abrupt off-screen death, which in any other show I wouldn’t have believed even for a second, but to its credit, <i>Masters of the Air</i> succeeds in the fakeouts due to the high casualty of war: anyone can die, and that can mean it can get hard to attached to the characters, and maybe an episode in basic training could’ve been used for us to get to know them a bit better, but then, that’s the point – the ones that die, including Barry Keoghan’s Lt. Curtis Biddick, early on and ruthlessly, are victims of a cruel war with no innocents. It’s a credit to <i>Masters of the Air</i> that it does make us care about Buck and Bucky so much and so instantly; two characters in a large cast perhaps – but the dynamic is there, and most shows that run for longer struggle to capture the chemistry of Butler and Turner.
<br />
<br />
AppleTV+ are the kings of prestige dad television, as a recent article in GQ pointed out, and with that comes an air of expectation to <i>Masters of the Air</i>. The brilliant cinematic opening credits pull you right in, unskippable and rewarding, and they give you a clue from the off, like all tv credits should – of what you’re getting into. It can lead to something of an abrupt mission objective in parts, with the much-promised D-Day for example, barely featured – but then that is the point of <i>Masters of the Air</i>, we’re not involved in the on ground battles. Those who aren’t aware of the history of World War Two will may struggle to wonder the significance of key events – but for those clued up on the very basic stories; it’s a marvel – resisting the need to be flashy and “prestige” in the same way most shows would’ve. It’s old school, pre-streaming almost – a rare antiquity that has something to say. One thing that elevates the show is its massive list of directors – Cary Joji Fukunaga, <i>No Time to Die</i> director, is followed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck; masters of the indie drama <i>Mississippi Grind</i> and <i>Sugar</i>; before helming <i>Captain Marvel</i>. Dee Rees, director of <i>Mudbound</i>, helms an episode. That’s a healthy list of talent that really knows how to make this show look good. And look good it does – <i>Masters of the Air</i> is an early year triumph in the best way possible.<br />
