Midnight Texas - Pilot and Bad Moon Rising - Review: Welcome to Midnight

Midnight Texas 101 and 102

With shows like the Vampire Diaries ending and The Original’s gearing up for a final season, I thought a network would give us a supernatural show to get our teeth into so to speak.

Yes, one-time Vampires were all the rage from those who sparkled to some who weren’t as friendly.

One such series was Trueblood so it’s no surprise Midnight Texas comes from another series of books by the same Author Charlaine Harris.

What intrigued me about Midnight from the first episode rather than a small town that hates people who are different this town embraces those who don’t quite fit anywhere else. It also seems to draw a bad crowd as well.

When Manfred Bernardo (Francois Arnaud) a psychic and not just a con artist but really can talk to the dead Psychic, needs a place to hide his dead grandma suggests the town of Midnight Texas.

The local citizens are intrigued and when the missing fiancée of one of the townsfolk shows up dead. She turns to Manfred to help solve her murder. Well shows up on his pillow ... Yes, it's a little bit freaky.

Manfred has gotten the attention of the town but used to hiding his secret he realizes he isn’t the only one who is special.

Lemuel (Peter Mensah) is a vampire but rather than drinking blood he can also gain strength from leeching energy but doesn’t mean to say he won’t chomp down on a bad guy or two.

Olivia (Arielle Kebbel) is an assassin, very skilled but so far appears human. I do v=belive her dual gun shooting could give Lara Croft a run for her money.

The Reverend, The Rev (Yul Vasquez) seems very mysterious but his true nature doesn’t appear until episode two with shocking results. Why be a werewolf when you can be an angry whiter tiger?

Fiji (Paris Fitz -Henley) a Witch and a powerful one had that don't be fooled by her calm demeanour. Fiji's cat ( every witch needs a cat) also holds a secret and tends to keep a watchful eye over the town. He may have a snuggly name but certainly not a snuggly nature.

Joe (Jason Lewis) who seems more Angelic than demonic. I feel the town doesn't know his true nature.

Creek (Sarah Ramos) who is human and seems a sweet girl with a very overprotective father. However, she has caught Manfred’s eye, I can see a romance blooming with these two.

Bobo (Dylan Bruce) also human but with some skills, he certainly keeps to himself. More secrets about this character will come to light I am sure. For now, though Manfred with the help of Bobo’s dead former fiancée is trying to clear him of her murder.

Throw in an angry biker gang that no surprise are called the Sons of Lucifer, a town that seems to sit on the veil between heaven and hell and you have the right blend for a great series.

From the pilot, you find yourself drawn to these characters they are likeable, we get enough information to keep us interested but also intrigued as to find out more.

Like for example who is this High Tower Manfred is running from and why?

We also see Manfred is no slouch with his abilities but gets into bother and lets more spirits through causing his new property to be overrun with ghosts.

Bobo seems the all-around decent guy but when his fiancée turns up dead soon the fingers of the local sheriff are pointed to him. Seems she lied and was married to a biker gang leader.

As the town comes to arrest him the Midnighter’s stick together further straining their relationship with the local sheriff’s department.

This leads to some overzealous policing by a deputy and an unfortunate death and release of the Rev during a full moon in episode two.

Manfred enlists the help of Fiji to exorcise his apartment. I love how calm she is doing it like she is cleaning the kitchen, however, a demonic presence, makes itself known and could lead to dangerous consequences in the future.

Joe see’s these consequences and Midnight sets to be a battle between good and evil...

I can’t wait for more, can you?

So what are your thought about the series?

Have you read the books prior to watching, do you like the subtle changes so far?
