The Originals - Haunter of Ruins - Review

This week on The Originals Hope finally meets her family and she bonds with Klaus. Freya is still holding Keelin captive to extract her venom and recaptures her against Elijah’s wishes after Hayley sets her free. Vincent teams up with Marcel to take down the mysterious power that seems to be taking children and explains how it first came to New Orleans. In flashbacks, we see how he and his wife Eva used dark magic to try and take on Marcel but it consumed Eva and their unborn child instead. That same being started to drain the children it had taken and Hope. While Hayley, Klaus, and Elijah prepare to go to New Orleans, Marcel agrees to help them for the sake of Hope. Meanwhile, Rebekah and Kol decide to leave town together, while Hayley and Elijah pick up where they left off 5 years earlier.

Most intriguing character: I wasn’t really a fan of Vincent when we first met him but he’s really grown on me since then. I really liked learning more about his past. Usually, when a new storyline involves an old one, there are plot holes. However, I found that the flashbacks were really in line with the Eva we got to see in season 2. We got to find out what drove her to do what she did. Vincent has been carrying around this guilt for a while now. In trying to protect them, he lost both his wife and his unborn child. And now he feels responsible for it happening again. I really liked how he confronted Marcel with his past. He didn’t hold him responsible for what’s happening now but he reminded Marcel that while trying to protect Davina from the witches, he hurt and killed a lot of innocent people. I hope that when the time comes, Vincent will be the one to take down this being.

Favorite scene(s): I absolutely loved Hope’s interactions with Klaus. Her shyness when she first came outside was entirely natural. She’s only really known her mom and Mary and now she was suddenly faced with an entire family. Klaus has spent 5 years thinking about this moment but so has Hope. She’s only heard about her father through stories and must have had her own vision of what their first meeting would be like. I really like how similar they were in their approach. Neither one really took charge of the conversation. But their common love for painting finally broke the ice. You could see the shock on his face when he saw Hope do magic. I don’t think he expected her magic to be this advanced already. The shock didn’t last very long, though. Right after his face showed nothing but pride. I can’t wait for more of their interactions as well as for Hope’s interactions with her other family members. I expect her interactions with Freya will be the most interesting due to their witch heritage.

Favorite pairing: I realized this week that there aren’t nearly enough scenes with Kol and Rebekah. They’ve both been through a lot lately and deserve a break from all of the craziness. I sure wish we could see what they get up to in Saint-Tropez. Spin-off anyone?

I’m conflicted: While I do love it when a character becomes a bit darker, there is a line that I don’t like having crossed. Freya is kind dancing right on top of it right now. While her holding Keelin captive isn’t that surprising since she showed us last season that she’ll give up a lot for her family, her ease with it did surprise me. At least last season she struggled with what she did to Davina, but now it doesn’t even seem to bother her that much. I also didn’t really like how she lashed out at Hayley who only just recently saved her life and that of her family. She even lied right to Elijah’s face when she agreed to let Keelin go. She seems so very sure of what’s right for her family and I worry that her convictions are going to get the better of her. However, her interactions with Keelin do intrigue me. I’m really curious to see what it will be like for them to team up.

Question: This might just be my imagination running wild but I found it odd how Vincent said that he didn’t really know what happened to his unborn child. Is there any chance that the child somehow survived? That the dark force latched onto it somehow? Just a random thought.
Best quotes: Kol: “After 5 years of being trapped in a house together, here we are… trapped in a house together.”
Elijah: “Let me guess. You want the world to disappear.” Hayley: “Not the whole world. You can stay, Hope too. Klaus can visit on the weekends, I guess.”
Klaus: “You were the only one who never treated me like a misfit. And for centuries my only place was by your side. And now I belong beside my daughter. And I suppose you deserve to find your place in the world as well.” Rebekah: “Thank you.”

That’s it for this week. Check in again next week for an all-new review and let me know in the comments what you thought of this week’s episode.
