The Middle - Thanksgiving VIII - Review

Happy Thanksgiving! After watching this episode I have to say I have mixed feelings about what happened. This episode was dramatic for the Hecks, but I shouldn't expect any less from my favorite sit-com family. But what there usually is a happy ending, and we didn't get that this time. I will get to that in a minute, but let me start with discussing some happier moments from this week.

Brick decides that he needs a job since Cindy wants a fitbit for Christmas. Cindy isn't happy if she doesn't get what she wants so Brick starts working at Spudsy's with Sue. This does not start off well. Sue criticizes Brick for everything he does especially calling out orders over the microphone. I laughed at how ridiculous Sue was. Does it really matter how you announce that a potato covered in cheese is ready? Apparently it matters to Sue. Brick is very irritated that Sue micro-manages him, and the fighting doesn't get any better until they both get jalapeno peppers in their eyes. I know they were in pain, but I thought this was funny. They get yelled at by their manager, but they don't get fired.

"If I wasn't planning to fake a slip and fall behind the counter and take the holidays off I'd fire you both."

Sue and Brick end up having a nice heart-to-heart and Sue tells him she's always felt like she has to take care of him and has to watch out for him. I thought this was sweet. Brick and Sue haven't always gotten along, and they obviously still have their issues, but Sue does care about her brother very much. But maybe she could lay off just a little? I think even Brick can handle announcing orders.

As Brick and Sue fight and make up, Nancy brings over some casseroles because her oven is on the fritz. Frankie teaches Mike and the kids how to eat the food without making it look like any food was missing. These were some of the best scenes from the episode! I loved how they took straws to the food, and they enjoyed every last bite!

"Does this taste better because it's wrong?" - Frankie
"It tastes better because we didn't make it." - Mike

My absolute favorite part of the episode was the end. All the Donahues were eating their Thanksgiving dinner, and all of their food collapsed. The turkey was all bones! The Hecks ate everything! This was too funny. I like Nancy, and I hope that she sticks around. The scenes between her and Mike and Frankie are always entertaining.

Now on to the not so fun parts of the episode. Axl is adamant that April appear in the Christmas photo this year, but Frankie doesn't want her there. She makes every excuse in the book to kick her out of the photo including shoving April out of the frame. She even put a picture of the dog on April's face. Frankie's week gets even worse once she finds out that Axl will be spending Thanksgiving with April's family. Frankie decides that their Thanksgiving will begin at 8 A.M. so that the whole family can attend.

This doesn't sit well with Sue and Brick. They don't want to eat that early in the morning, and Sue is livid that she has to change her Thanksgiving just because of April. Brick doesn't like April either because Cindy can't have a conversation with her. Apparently Cindy can talk to anyone. Mike doesn't seem too upset until he realizes that Axl won't be home to watch the Colts game with him. This makes him livid! Later, as the family vents about Axl and April, Frankie doesn't realize that Axl is standing right behind her. At first she seems unsure what to do, but then she goes off about April. She is sure that April is not the one for him. Obviously hurt, he walks out.

Now I understand why Frankie and the rest of the family dislike April, and I understand that they were irritated about having their Thanksgiving turned upside down, but I think Frankie could have waited before completely unloading on Axl. Why did she have to ruin Thanksgiving? She also could have done it in a nicer way. I was so sad when the Hecks gathered around the table at 8:00, and Axl didn't come. It really broke my heart that the Hecks didn't have a happy Thanksgiving.

What did you think about this episode? Do you agree with what Frankie did? Do you think Axl will forgive Frankie?

I hope that you all have a very nice holiday, and hopefully it will be happier than Frankie's. Don't forget to tune in next week for another new episode of The Middle!
