Nathalie Kelley TVGuide Interview
Why did Damon and Enzo make people confess to doing bad things before killing them for Sybil? In her own twisted way, does Sybil think what she's doing is a form of justice?

Kelley: I don't think Sybil is too concerned with justice. She doesn't have a moral compass in that way. But you'll find out why they have that talk about harvesting evil souls. It's something that she has to do, and you'll find out why in this episode. But it's not like she's some kind of vigilante because she wants to be. She would love to be doing other things, but you find out that this is like a job for her.

The idea of Hell looms over this season. How will that idea continue to be explored as this season goes on?

Kelley: It's the final season so I think everybody has to look in the mirror and ask really serious questions about punishment and repercussions for one's past actions. The theme of redemption is strong. Are these people redeemable after doing awful things? Can you come back from that? Is redemption possible for these characters? It's a big theme and it's a fitting theme as [creator Julie Plec] is wrapping up this story.

Nathalie Kelley EW Interview

In Friday’s episode, viewers will get a peek into Sybil’s origin story, and Kelley says a “more vulnerable, human side of her” will be on display. “She’s motivated sadly, by these tragic circumstances,” she says.

Apparently, Sybil has abandonment issues after facing a long-term exile. “When people are motivated by that,” Kelley warns, “they are capable of some pretty dark things.”

She also explains why Sybil is so determined to kill Bonnie. Last week, Sybil could not get over the fact that both Damon and Enzo cared for Bonnie so deeply. Kelley says it’s “what triggers her about Damon’s love for Elena and everyone’s love for Bonnie. She can’t fathom that love because she’s never had it.”

Nathalie Kelley Teases Sybil's Backstory

Alloy Entertainment: In the trailer for “An Eternity of Misery,” Sybil reveals that she has a sister.
Obviously you can’t tell us who she is — but just like the Salvatore brothers have their differences, what are some key contrasts between these two women?

Nathalie Kelley: I can’t really say without giving away who it is – it’s such a good plot twist that I don’t want to spoil it for you. But my backstory delves into this tale about two sisters living on an island and they’re different in a lot of ways. You don’t know until the very end who it is, but you kind of…[Laughs] I can’t say too much, but just know it’s about two sisters on an island. I’m trying not to get into hot water here, but yes, once you see who it is and learn about their past, you’ll realize how different they are.

Alloy Entertainment: Sybil has deleted cherished memories, interfered with relationships, and instilled so much fear in people. How much worse does it get?

Nathalie Kelley: Oh, it gets even darker – she does some really messed-up things. This is just the beginning. [Laughs] I’m actually shocked by some of the things, like, ‘Wow, she’s not holding back!’ She’s a true villain.
