MacGyver - Wire Cutter - Review

I think Mac has been watching too many of cleaning hack videos on YouTube as the episode starts out with him making a baking soda and vinegar explosion.

Bozer is once again, useless in this episode. I really hope his character comes to light in the upcoming ones. The gang plus Bozer and Mac’s ex-girlfriend want to give Mac an intervention as Bozer found that he is tracking Nikki. Riley asks why they cannot tell him that “Nikki’s still alive and turned out to be a dangerous psychopath”. I would like to hope that is this a little bit of foreshadowing and they will eventually tell Bozer. I’m unsure as to why they brought his ex into this as she didn’t bring anything to the episode. Thornton interrupts the intervention when her phone is going off as ‘they have a department meeting in 15 minutes.’
Agent Bannister is in Russia and has found the Sevchenko is wanting to overthrow the Russian government as well as storing weapons. Mac helps her make a wrench with a bullet to open something holding a bomb. Sevchenko storms in, kills Bannister and ends up taking the bomb away. Thornton has gotten a lot more screen time this week and we are seeing her character develop and how the death of Bannister has affected her.

I’m really liking the weekly paperclip craft lesson with Mac. Riley translates a name on the bomb to find out the programmer of the bomb. They find that he is in a nursing home and he is literally an old MacGyver. He tells them that they need the passwords to stop the bomb, however, is friend knows them. The team, along with alexander and his friend are off to Serbia. If they want to stop the bomb they need an old Russian computer and Alexanders friend knows just where to find one. Mac turns it into a portal device.

Alexander has been kidnapped by Sevchenko’s soldiers. He wants alexander to build more bombs but he refuses. On the outside of the warehouse, Mac is trying to find a way in. Sevchenko sets the bomb for 15 minutes and Mac drives into the warehouse, guns firing. I love the reference to Donkey Kong with Riley pushes a barrel down the stairs. Sevchenko escapes through a window and Thornton and Jack head after him while Mac, Riley and the two Russians have ccame to a halt as their keyboard is toast. While Mac hooks up Alexander to the computer to make a circuit, his friend gets shot. There is not enough time for Alexander to type everything in so mac ends up changing the time and buys themselves 100 years. Thornton is after Sevchenko to get justice for Bannister. Like I mentioned above, I really like how her character is being used more and we get to see some emotion from her.

There is a nice scene between Alexander and his friends where his friend tell's him that he would have went with him if Alexander told him his plans. This is very much the problem that Mac and Jack has right now, where MacGyver is hiding things from Jack. Mac then explains why he was looking for Nikki and that he didn’t want Jack to worry about him. After being honest about Mac fashion sense and Jacks singing, they promise each other that there will be no more secrets from now on. Riley takes Alexander back to his care home and they also have a nice moment where Riley sits alongside him and watches The Price is Right. I have a feeling that Riley never had a lot of contact with her dad and Alexander has reminded her of him. I would like to see a bit more of a back story of Riley. Thornton and Jack are together as she has to go and tell Bannisters family that she has died and the episode ends there.

I quite liked this episode as a lot of characters blossomed however, it could have done with a little more action.
