Chicago Med - Soul Care - Review

Well if the hundreds (probably) of promos during the summer Olympics didn’t get you excited for the new season of Chicago Med, I don’t know how to help you. Anyway, Chicago Med’s second season kicked off this week and the doctors and nurses wasted no time getting back into action.

“We all have a long way to go in healing our souls.”

Natalie, Will, and Connor are on the case when a father and daughter are rushed to the hospital after a car crash. Though Natalie and Connor initially clash on the daughter’s treatment (as she is pregnant), it’s Sheryl’s father who crashes and requires immediate surgery. After miraculously reviving just long enough to meet his grandchild, he passes away.

After Dr. Downey’s mentorship, Connor is ready to begin his cardio thoracic fellowship. Connor’s new mentor is Dr. Latham, a straightforward, no nonsense, rule-follower type. Basically, Dr. Latham is Spock. This is going to be an interesting pairing, as Connor has established himself as someone who doesn’t mind bending the rules. The two dominant, though different personalities are likely going to clash on a weekly basis. Dr. Downey also began with a tough exterior, but I don’t see this relationship unfolding like that one, at all. Regardless, Connor was the standout character for me last season so I’m excited to see where this new challenge takes him.

Much of the focus for the foreseeable future will be on the blossoming love triangle between Will, Natalie, and Jeff. Jeff Clark is a med student, new to Chicago Med. He’s not new to the franchise, of course, as we first saw him as a firefighter on Chicago Fire a few seasons ago. When he was introduced as a med student near the end of last season, it was revealed he is an old friend of Natalie’s. There was immediate jealousy on Will’s part, and that’s obviously not going away anytime soon. Jeff tries to get involved numerous times this episode, only to have Will take over.

It’s ultimately going to be Will and Natalie, no doubt. But I do enjoy a good love triangle, and I definitely enjoy seeing Jeff Clark on my TV again. But if the writers wanted to pull the rug out from under us, I wouldn’t be opposed to a Natalie/Connor pairing. (I know he’s getting a love interest of his own, this is just me throwing out other options.) But how adorable was that ending with Natalie and Jeff? This is going to be fun.

On a somewhat related note, Natalie’s response to that nurse calling her the Ice Princess was incredible. “Just a princess? Why not the Ice Queen?” I don’t know why they think she’s icy and rigid, but that was an amazing response. You can be the Queen, Natalie.

Elsewhere…

After deciding against pathology at the end of last season, Sarah is now working as a barista. Dr. Charles pays her a visit and offers her a resident position in Psychiatry. They try to help Emmy, a fifteen-year-old girl who attempted suicide. Trying to live up to the impossible standards for teenage girls, Emmy was convinced she had Vitiligo (a condition where your skin loses its pigment), and didn’t see a way out from the ridicule, other than suicide. Sarah is excited when she discovers (with the help of her adorable pathology boyfriend) that Emmy doesn’t have Vitiligo, just a yeast infection. It’s Dr. Charles who reminds her that their work has only just begun; they may have helped her physical condition, but she still tried to kill herself because of beauty standards. They have a long way to go.

Who runs the ED? Not newly-installed Chief Resident Ethan. But at the episode’s start, he doesn’t know that. He’s in that early stage, you know, the one where he has all these “great” ideas that are going to greatly improve how the ED is run. Will, the former Chief Resident, offers Ethan his scheduling sheets, who declines in favor of his new system. That system doesn’t even last the duration of the episode, and Will later tells Ethan, “You know, the thing I learned early on is the nurses, they run everything.”

So who runs the ED? Maggie. Duh. She tells Sharon, “I hate killing their dreams.” But Sharon responds with, “No, you like to let them hang themselves.” Love it. Ethan learned quickly, albeit the hard way. Speaking of Sharon, we didn’t see much of her this week. But sadly, it looks like her husband Burt is gone for good. I’m still not sure how she’ll function long term on this show, as the focus is the ED. But, her leadership is what keeps this team together, so I’m hopeful she’ll get a great storyline.

Even though Will assures April her TB is latent, she’s worried she’ll infect Tate and his son. “I just don’t feel clean.” It’s heartbreaking to watch April shrink back from Tate, simply because she’s scared she’ll infect him. Tate, being the wonderful man he is, couldn’t be more supportive. After seeing an HIV patient with his wife, April realizes her life might not be perfect, but she and Tate can live with her TB diagnosis. I love her relationship with Tate and hope these two last. It’s especially refreshing to see a major character have a relationship outside the workplace.
