Chicago Fire - Where The Collapse Started - Review

“I can’t leave anyone behind, Chief.”

Jimmy’s brother Danny is back this week and up to no good. He wants Jimmy to go to Casey to secure a liquor license, as he’s been selling illegally at some club of his. I was a bit surprised that Jimmy first went to Severide for advice, as the two haven’t shared many scenes before. Severide recommends Jimmy doesn’t ask Casey, and I was pleasantly surprised to see Jimmy tell his brother he wouldn’t do it.

On the second call of the night, 51 joins Danny’s house on scene. The building is about to collapse, so the search and rescue time is cut short by Boden. But Danny, thinking he hears a victim, asks for more time. Boden at first protests, but agrees to one more minute for Danny. Sadly, that one more minute was a minute too long. The building begins to collapse, and Danny is stuck.

Jimmy, being the sweet soul he is, runs in after his brother. He can’t move the debris off Danny, and the building doesn’t have long. Severide pleads with Boden to go in after Jimmy, but it’s Boden himself who goes in and pulls Jimmy out just as the building falls. It’s been a while since this show lost someone on the job, and though we didn’t know Danny well, it serves as a reminder that these characters are vulnerable every week.
“The nature of this job is that sometimes, we are the ones who don’t make it home.”

51 is family. Severide and Casey really stepped up for Jimmy and showed how incredible they are not just as leaders, but as men. And as involved as they say they will be, I worry it won’t be enough. We’ve known Jimmy for about a season now, and he hasn’t faced many challenges. He’s going to be in a dark place and if his anger at Boden is any indication, he’s not coming out of that dark place for a while.

At the end of the hour, Jimmy shows up at Severide’s, says he holds Boden responsible, and then storms out. He is up to no good and I’m sure he’ll cause all sorts of problems in the finale and possibly into next season.

Elsewhere…

Gabby is still trying to foster Louie. Last episode, I was a bit skeptical of this endeavor. It’s tearing Gabby and Casey apart and I don’t like it! But shoot, that is one adorable kid. And, that rift might not be as big as we thought. At the top of the hour, Gabby approaches Boden for a letter of recommendation. I don’t know if it had to come from a superior or just someone in her life, but being the father figure he is, Boden was the perfect choice.

Antonio visits are my favorite! He, however, was not in the greatest mood while at 51. Gabby asks him to expedite the background check process and when she also tells him she’s doing it alone, it leads to an intense conversation between Casey and Antonio.
“Why the hell is she doing this on her own? ...You’ve been stringing her along for three years! You’re supposed to marry her! You either go get her and make this right for good, or you leave her the hell alone!”
At this point, I feel I’ve been strung along in this relationship for three years! I understand Casey’s side of things, but Antonio is right. He just needs to stop talking and marry her already.

Thanks to a nudge from Boden, Casey puts a call in to DCFS to get Gabby the appointment with the director she needs. Sadly, it’s too late. Louie was placed with a family not long before Gabby’s meeting. But at the end of the hour, Gabby gets a call that Louie was returned to DCFS because of behavior issues. He was asking for Gabby, and her reunion with him is the sweetest thing. It’s looking like Louie might go with Gabby after all!

Bow chicka bow wow…things seem to be going well with Stella and Severide. The more I see them together, the more I realize what a great fit they are. Might this be the end of Severide’s hooking up routine? Well, not so fast. Stella’s got a stalker in the form of her ex-husband.

Grant shows up, totally high and/or wasted, and begs Stella to show up at his band’s gig. He’s desperate for her and calls her his muse. This is obviously build-up to some sort of Severide/Grant showdown, but really, can we call it a showdown? That battle won’t even be close.

Otis just can’t stay away! He visits the house and meets his temporary replacement, Ferguson. I just about fell out of my chair laughing when I first saw him! Ferguson could not be the more ideal fireman if he tried. He’s tall, strong, and ridiculously good looking. I had my suspicions right away that Herrmann was up to his usual shenanigans and that Ferguson might not be Otis’ actual replacement. But, let the fantastic prank continue.

The rest of truck totally plays into it, talking about how great Ferguson is, being all bro-y, the usual. Otis is visibly terrified he’s going to lose his spot and goes to great lengths—taking Connie to a show—to secure his spot at 51. While the rest of Truck laughs it off at Molly’s, Otis realizes the whole thing is a prank (when Connie assures him his spot is secure) just as the show begins.

What did you think of the episode? What will Jimmy’s rage lead him to do? Will Louie end up with Dawson? Share your thoughts below!
