“Sacrifice is the hardest of all human actions. But anyone who puts on a uniform to help others also knows it’s the most important. We pay a price for our service. And sometimes, that price is beyond our limits.”

After the loss of Danny, Boden tasks the house to write letters to a loved one. No one struggles more than Dawson, as she’s unsure of what to write and who to address it to. More on the letter in just a bit…

Even though Dawson now has a chance at getting Louie, she first has to secure an apartment for DCFS to then inspect. Casey offers to have Dawson move back in with him, but she shuts that down immediately. When the gorgeous apartment Dawson secured falls through, she takes Herrmann up on his offer to take the apartment above his garage.

We see it all the time on this show, but for some reason, seeing this house come together like the family they are for one of their own still gets to me. Herrmann’s garage apartment isn’t exactly livable, so Truck 81 plus Cindy (always great to see her) go to work to turn the apartment into a home. It’s not perfect for the inspector, but Gabby is. “I know it needs a lot of work. But believe me when I say that my firehouse family made a miracle happen today. And it’s just a taste of the love Louie’s gonna get when he comes home here.”

Meanwhile, Susan is back this week and whisks Casey off to Springfield for some event that should help advance his political career. Politically, Casey is a natural. He and Susan celebrate their weekend victory at dinner, and it’s clear she’s attracted to him. I can’t really blame her for that, but Susan, back off! It’s one thing to be attracted to him, I get that she can’t exactly control that. But to kiss him and invite him back to your room (she left her room number) knowing he is in a relationship is unacceptable. Do better, Susan.

I am so tired of all this Casey and Dawson drama. You two love each other! You fought for each other! We have been put through the emotional ringer with these two for four years, and I want some peace and commitment, dang it.

After nearly dying on a call, Dawson returns to the house and receives the best surprise…Louie! We all knew it was coming, but it was still heartwarming. We also hear the letter Dawson wrote, to Louie. And in the end, thankfully, Casey goes back to Dawson. And though there aren’t words, their reunion has a finality to it. These two are finally in this for good.

Elsewhere…

This doesn’t pertain much to the plot itself, but for the first time ever on the show, we see the house called into action during the night. We haven’t seen them sleeping there before, right? I’m fairly certain I would remember seeing Cruz and his giant teddy bear. Mouch slept fully geared-up and based on his earlier comment (an older fireman also did that), I’m worried that the bit, though humorous, might be the beginning of the end for Mouch as a firefighter.

Jimmy returns to work a bit sooner than expected. He’s only just beginning to deal with Danny’s death, so everyone is a bit on edge. Jimmy is not ready to be back at work and proves it on his first call with Sylvie. It’s nothing too serious, but he does give a victim compressions a little to forcefully.
Watching Jimmy clear out his brother’s locker was strange; I don’t know what it is about a locker being cleared out that makes it feel so final. Danny’s firehouse is supportive of Jimmy, and one fireman expresses his anger toward Boden for that extra minute. Don’t take the bait, Jimmy!

In this situation, I’m sure it’s natural for Jimmy to look for someone to blame. It’s just not the same placing the blame on an intangible or inanimate thing. So while I understand Jimmy placing the blame on Boden to some degree, another part of me just doesn’t get it. Boden obviously had no control over the fire, so he couldn’t know for sure when the building would come crashing down. He also risked his own life to save Jimmy when it did crumble. And even more than that, Danny would likely have kept searching for the victim, even if Boden hadn’t allowed him the extra minute.

I’d like to think Jimmy’s conversation with his sister-in-law means that he’s done blaming Boden, but something tells me it won’t be wrapped up so easily. I don’t think Jimmy will let this go, and I fully expect this storyline to continue in the early episodes of season five.

Not only is Grant using again, but he still won’t let up on Stella. Which of course, complicates things with Severide. Aside from Grant, things with Severide and Stella are going swimmingly (though Capp managed to hilariously ruin a romantic moment with a giant saw). Grant later waits for Stella at Molly’s, and is not exactly pleased to see her walk in with Severide, understanding there’s something going on between the two.

Later, Stella gets a strange message from Grant that gives her a bad feeling. Stella tracks him using his phone, and the house goes to investigate. They find Grant, down from an overdose, and get him to Chicago Med just in time. Dr. Charles is on the case and looks after Grant while Stella gets back to work, but Grant later goes missing. Cut to Stella and Severide returning from Danny’s service. Things start to heat up between the two, but that’s not where the focus is. No, it’s on the knife holder, missing a knife. Yikes. Then it’s on Grant, sitting undetected in a chair, with the missing knife.

And that’s the season! Honestly, it’s a serious contender for the best season of Fire yet. What did you think? Are Casey and Dawson in it for good? How badly will Severide hurt Grant (because let’s be real, there’s no way Grant comes out the winner)? How will Jimmy resolve his anger toward Boden? Share your thoughts below!
