New Girl - Episode 5.16 - Review: "Helmet"

In the midst of rekindling her relationship with Sam, Jess has a sex dream about Nick on an all-new back-to-back episode of New Girl due to talking about the helmet Nick had given her. Jess decides to get rid of anything that reminds her of Nick before she meets Sam's parents. I apologize for the tardiness in my reviews. I recently moved and I am trying to squeeze all of the items on my to-do list into the week. Meanwhile, Schmidt and Winston meet with an animal agent and tries to hook Ferguson up with a job as Nick deals with Jess's meltdown.

"Pancakes and syrup, girls! Let's eat!" Nick wants to have the details of the dream before he will throw the helmet away and Schmidt and Winston find out that Ferguson just doesn't have it to be an actor...Just writing that sentence hurt. That was actually the plot of the episode. It's just so far fetched and ridiculous. I mean, I'm used to the side storylines not always being home runs or bringing solid character development, but what is going on? Cece and Schmidt are supposed to be getting married! Why is he in the side arc of the week? I know when it tried to be cute, it worked, but in my opinion, it didn't add anything to the story and was pushed just too far for me. And as for Jess, she really just needs to get over her relationship problems. She is her own worst enemy and there is only so much the adorkable angle will continue to work.

The realization that Nick's dad gave him the helmet finally gave some emotional weight to the episode. New Girl was always best when it was able to juggle the comedy and drama with a flair for more drama. These are supposed to be real people with real problems and this was a great way to show Jess's loyalty and also showing that Sam isn't the right guy by just walking away from her. On the other end of the spectrum, those poor cats. I will admit they set up future arcs perfectly with this episode; Winston realizing that Ally fancies him just as much as he fancies her and Jess giving Nick the piece of the helmet for the bar so that symbolically, his dad would always be able to watch over him. They are going to end up together before the end of this season, at the wedding, I can almost guarantee it. Tune in next week for another back to back header of New Girl .
